Memorial service for slain cop NCEBA DLADLA

A

memorial service will be held at Lilian Ngoyi Sports Centre, Kwaza-khele next week Thursday for slain Constable Nomathamsanqa Ivy Tsitsi (36).

Senior police officials are expected to attend the memorial service.

At time of going to print no arrests had yet been made in the murder of Tsitsi, who was off duty at the time of the incident last week Thursday.

Tsitsi, who was stationed at the Zwide police station, was shot after arriving at her home in Mcelu Street, NU8 Motherwell, after work at about 6am.

An unidentified man approached and fired several shots at her vehicle, a black Citroén.

“She suffered injuries to her upper body and died at the scene,” police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge said.

The reasons for her killing were not known, but the police had ruled out the possibility of robbery as nothing had been taken from the car, he said.

Tsitsi joined the SAPS in January 2005. A mother of three, two of her own and one adopted by her in Mount Frere, was in the process of a divorce. Her estranged husband had been called in for questioning as a standard procedure, Beetge said.

Passing her deepest condolences to family, friends and colleagues, provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Celiwe Binta said, “We condemn the killing in the strongest possible way and will zealously bring to book those who never think twice when shooting and murdering police officials.”

New equipment for Metro police

O NLY a day after the Nelson Mandela Bay

metro police were left without a chief, the “hardware” was introduced for the new force.

Altogether 21 vehicles were added to the metro police force’s existing arsenal by mayor Danny Jordaan last week - and this is just the first step.

Last month Jordaan requested a plan by the metro’s councillors on how finally to establish a metro police force - nearly two

years after Pinkie Mathabathe was appointed as metro police chief.

Mathabathe last week moved to the position of acting director for safety and security, but this would not stop the process, Jordaan said.

“We have already received the plans to launch the metro police,” he confirmed.

“Now we have launched the hardware. The next step is to meet this week so that we can determine the priorities and align them with the budget.”

A budget of about R500-million was available for the police, while 40 trained offi-

cers were ready to start their work, he added.

“We want to make the Bay one of the safest metros in the country. There is no place for crime. In Helenvale people are speaking about murder as if it’s just another occurrence, and this cannot be part of our normal conversations.”

The news of the metro police’s progress has been welcomed with open arms.

“This is a great initiative, but we must play our part to ensure its success,” said pastor Godfrey Caesar, a community leader in Helenvale - where gang violence still pre-

vails.

“The mayor is the father of the metro, but as the children we must unite to help in the fight against crime.”

The community must also act to prevent further crime, said Tim Hendricks of the SAPS Mount Road cluster board.

“The gang members are not aliens,” Hendricks said.

“They are our children, our family. Crime knows no colour or culture; it affects all of us. It is time that we stop accusing each other and instead take back ownership of the metro.”

Students share struggle to success stories AT first glance, Hilton Sansom is your stereotypical “privileged student”. The well-spoken 22-year-old attended Grey High, matriculated in 2011 with a 93% aggregate, and received one of NMMU’s most prestige bursaries – the ViceChancellor’s Scholarship, currently worth R80 000-plus annually – for each year of his BCom (Chartered Accountancy) degree.

But what most people don’t realise is just how hard Sansom had to work to get there. Growing up as the only child of a single, unemployed mother, he has – since the age of nine – relied on bursaries for his education.

Academic excellence became his ticket to success – and he grew up defining himself in terms of the marks he achieved, so much so that when his results dipped in a very challenging third year and again during this, his Honours year, he sank into depression.

Sansom’s slump, however, was the start of his finding direction in life. “I needed to find out what my strengths were as a human being and not as a student.”

Having realised after three years that auditing was “not really [his] thing”, he was able to identify his passion for the fashion industry – and is now planning to apply his business knowledge to build a career in this field.

“I learned a lot about myself and found the direction I need to take in life. For me, that’s

success already.”

Sansom was one of three panellists sharing their “struggle to success” stories at the end-ofyear function for NMMU School of Accounting’s PinnAcle Leadership Programme, a ground-breaking programme designed to fasttrack the development of the School’s top 80 Chartered Accountancy students into responsible leaders.

The other two panellists were Lunga Tshikila (24), an orphan who dropped out of university in 2012 but has gone on to become one of South Africa’s top young CEOs, and Gugu Nxiweni (35), a Chartered Accountant, NMMU alumnus and social entrepreneur who recently co-founded his own company.

In his talk, Nxiweni, the Executive Chairman and Co-Founder of Improvate Group of Companies, said, “Success in itself is not a goal. Success is a barometer against which we measure the achievement of stated and unstated objectives . . . But success is meaningless without impact. As you do things and set goals for yourself, make sure you focus on the things that can change the world.”

Metro chief moves to safety in the metro ODETTE KEMP THE Nelson Mandela Bay metro police force has now lost its only official employee.

This employee is Pinkie Mathabathe, who was appointed as metro police chief in February last year, at a salary of approximately R1 million per year, although there was no workforce to manage.

“She could not really thrive as police chief, because she was like a queen without a kingdom in this position,” said mayor Danny Jordaan.

Mathabathe will now step in as the acting executive director of safety and security in the metro, announced Jordaan.

This comes after Shane Brown, the former director, after a month’s sick leave requested to return to his previous post as head of disaster management.

“It makes sense to put her in this position,” Jordaan explained.

“She already receives a salary while the metro police has not yet been established.

It is more cost-effective in this way, because we will not have to pay a new salary.”

The move to appoint Mathabathe as director, is, however, not a popular choice.

“She did not come with a good history from her previous positions elsewhere, and here she has not done anything. The plan to move her, is just proof for us that the metro has abandoned its plan to create a metro police force,” Retief Odendaal, DA leader in the metro, said. Jordaan defended Mathabathe, however.

“I’ve seen her in action and believe she will be able to face the challenges in her new office.”

Drug dealers feel sting of Operation Fiela NCEBA DLADLA DRUG dealers felt the sting of Operation Fiela as the crime-busting operation continued to make inroads in Nelson Mandela Bay at the weekend.

The operation had lasted from 4pm on Saturday until early on Sunday, provincial police spokesperson Colonel Sibongile Soci said.

Five suspects, aged between 25 and 50, had been arrested and charged for dealing in and possession of drugs as well as possession of suspected stolen property in the Port Elizabeth area, he said.

They had confiscated drugs in the form of mandrax, dagga, tik and cocaine rocks to the value of R50 000 and an undisclosed amount of cash.

A total of 155 people and 44 vehicles had been stopped and searched and 40 premises searched.

In Uitenhage, the operation nabbed five suspects, aged between 28 and 37, for driving under the influence of liquor.

A 29-year-old man was arrested for possession of suspected stolen goods and a 36-year-old suspect was arrested for possession of dagga.

All the suspects were expected to appear in the Uitenhage Magistrates Court

Traffic fines amounting to R4 000 were also issued for driving without a valid licence.

A total of 70 vehicles and 20 people had been stopped and searched and three liquor premises visited, Soci said, adding that no fines had been issued as the liquor outlets had been in compliance.

In Kamesh, three suspects, aged 25 to 28, were arrested for possession of dagga.

One suspect (41) was arrested for the contravention of a court order.

Traffic fines amounting to R9 400 were issued for driving without a valid licence.

A total of 248 people and 36 vehicles were stopped and searched and 12 premises, including taverns, were searched.

The law enforcement officers have decided to celebrate this day at NU 9 stadium in Motherwell on 2 December, said CPF Chairperson Nomawethu Jama.

The Motherwell police precinct has been identified as a problem area in terms of the crimes committed against women and children, according to Jama.

“We expect National and Provincial Delegations of the SAPS and CPF to attend the event,” said Jama.

According to Jama, their partners in the campaign include Nelson Mandela Metro Municipality as well as government departments like Correctional Services, Justice, Health, Safety Liaison and Education. The Human Rights Commission, Thuthuzela Centre, Rape Crisis and the religious sector would also be represented at the event.

Jama said they would also be emphasising the need to stop discriminating against people on the basis of handicaps, sex, religion and language.

“Hundreds of guests from around the country are expeced to attend the launch event,” said Jama, adding that their patrol groups were already hard at work to ensure that they combed the area to combat any lawlessness.

An SAPS drill and march patrol will start at Ngqokqweni Street and follow a route past Melisizwe Primary School to the stadium.

NCEBA DLADLA PARENTS and caregivers neglecting or abandoning a child are breaking the law and are committing a criminal offence.

This is the warning from Department of Social Development spokesperson Sibabalwe Nkebe.

Nkebe said the prevalence of child concealment and abandonment was fortunately not high in local communities.

“We usually view such behaviour as deliberate neglect,” she said.

Neglect of a child meant the failure in the exercise of parental responsibilities to provide for the child’s basic physical, intellectual, emotional or social needs.

Abandonment of a child on the other hand, she said, meant a child had either been obviously deserted by the parent, guardian or caregiver, or had, for no apparent reason, no contact with the parent, guardian or caregiver for at least three months, according to the Children’s Act 38 of 2005 (as amended).

such behaviour were poverty and single parenting, where families were under pressure with the demands of child care.

Poor parenting skills were also a problem, as well as children conceived from rape.

Nkebe said pregnant women who felt isolated and not connected to support and resources could conceal and desert their babies.

Campaign to identify capable councillors NCEBA DLADLA COMPLAINTS of poor service delivery and incompetent and unaccountable councillors are being addressed by a Capable Councillor Campaign of the South African Non-Governmental Organisations Coalition, (Sangoco) and the Port Elizabeth Ministers Fraternal and Traditional Leaders.

After months of deliberations the structures held a bosberaad facilitated by the Centre for Accountable Governance (CAG) in Port Elizabeth on Thursday.

They looked at ways to strengthen the participatory oversight role in local government so as to ensure there was stability in the country after next year’s local government elections and beyond.

Nelson Mandela Bay structures as well as the Inxuba Civil Society Forum and the Makana Civil Society Coalition shared notes and concluded that their municipalities had similar experiences, with corruption and political leniency being the major problems that compromised service delivery to the taxpayers, the deserving and needy communities.

Zimbabweans feel at home in their new country NCEBA DLADLA A GROUP of Zimbabweans living in Nelson Mandela Bay are fitting in well and enjoying everyday experiences as they would in their native country.

This became evident when parents Teddie (28) and Martha Mwariwangu (26) of Ngwevana Street in NU9 Motherwell celebrated their eldest daughter Wilma’s second birthday.

A group of Zimbabweans from Motherwell, Sidwell and Zwide celebrated with them and mingled comfortably with their Xhosa neighbours and friends.

It was interesting to see how Xhosa conversations were heard even among the supposedly Shona speakers.

“We decided to celebrate our daughter’s birthday because we did not celebrate her first birthday owing to (financial) difficulties

He invited their pastor, Emmanuel Manyikwa of the Fountain of Life Ministries, family, friends and fellow Zimbabwean artists Willionair and Seadogg, as well as Zwide’s MSG to play their CDs. “We are enjoying hip hop, some overseas music, Zimbabwe’s Sungura as well as our own music,” said Teddie, who sings house music and Sungura.

“A child is a gift from God. What this couple has done clearly shows their love for each other and their appreciation of God’s gift, their child,” Manyikwa said.

Joy as Nomtha Educare Centre kids graduate THE future of young children must be prepared for through education, as education is the key to success.

This was said by Thotyelwa Kana, the principal of Nomtha Educare Centre in Kwazakhele.

This was after Kana and her two teachers Bongiwe Somfula (Preparatory) and Nwabisa Fundakubi (Class teacher) had finished their part in making the little children ready for formal education.

About 22 toddlers of this Early Childhood Development Centre (ECD) graduated last Friday.

The ceremony was held at Lilian Ngoyi Sports Centre.

Dressed in graduation gowns and marching with dignity and honour from their institution of learning in Nobatana Street to the Lilian Ngoyi Sports Centre, the toddlers were greeted by songs and ululations along the way. They led

the procession and were followed by drum majorettes, teachers, parents and invited guests.

“Guest speaker Zameka Mdingi emphasised the importance of educating children and making sure that they were ready to face life’s challenges training and development. She explained why the graduation ceremony was important,” said Kana.

Mrs Thina, who works for a centre dealing with orphaned and vulnerable children, spoke about good parenting.

Kana was happy that their children, who graduated to nearby primary schools like Stephen Mazungula, eBongweni and BJ Mnyanda, were ready to start the next phase in their education.

“I want to the thank the parents with whom we worked so well,” Kana said.

Physical excercise for school kids promoted THE human body is designed to move - arms stretched, legs elevated and to dance when the music is right.

Pupils of primary schools in the Bay’s northern areas converged at the Gelvandale athletics track last week and showed just how one should go about stretching and dancing.

The groups from GJ Louw Primary School in Schauderville, Alpha Primary School in Gelvandale, Sapphire Road Primary School in Booysen Park and Kleinskool Primary School were part of a pilot programme, “Designed to Move”, which promotes physical exercise in Tamika Williams from Alpha Primary School in Gelvandale showed her jumping skills at the event.

“The idea is to promote health and exercise among pupils. Exercise does wonders for the promotion of learning and discipline in the classroom,” said Neil Campher of Ukuvula Foundation, one of the stakeholders of the programme.

The event was the culmination of a year-long programme at the schools where teachers and volunteers are trained to sharpen physical exercise as part of the curriculum.

Motivational talks by sportspeople, first aid training for teachers and donated equipment to use on the sports field are some of the things which benefited the schools in this programme.

According to Campher the next step is to involve more stakeholders and implement the pro-

gramme at other schools.

“We have also taught the children indigenous games that are no longer being played,” said Reynold Solomons of CS Innovations. “It’s good that children learn to play. The programme was also a way to help learners to focus on something other than the violence in their communities,” he said.

Together with CS Innovations and Ukuvula Foundation, the programme was also supported by the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ), which is the link between schools and the department of basic education.

“The idea is not to take over physical exercise in schools, but merely to offer advice to teachers on how to deal with this part of the curriculum as pleasantly as possible,” Campher and Solomons said. – ALVENÉ APPOLLIS

THE launch of William Magwiroto’s debut album “The Footprint” which was scheduled to take place at KwaMagxaki community hall this Friday, has been postponed.

Magwiroto, aka Willionair, said the postponement was due to unforseen circumstances. He apologised to music fans who were keen to taste his new sound - a combination of Hip Hop, RnB, gospel and House.

“I want to apologise to Express Indaba readers and the fans who wanted to support the show. This

was as a result of something beyond our control.”

Nevertheless, he said, “We realise that school examinations will be finished on Wednesday next week and would still make the show for the first week of December.”

To make up for the disappointment his Zimbabwean colleague Teddie Mwariwangu will also be using the event to launch his own 9-Track House Album, “The Mission” all for the price of one admission ticket at R30.

Supporting acts like Azz Veritazz, EM Lloyd, Platinum Gee, King Meezi and MSG will still be there to warm up the stage.

KwaDwesi’s Richard Mazungula records DVD of ‘Umusa’ album NCEBA DLADLA LOCAL Gospel star Richard Mazungula will be shooting a DVD of his latest album “Umusa” in Port Elizabeth from Saturday November 28.

“I’ll be shooting a live DVD of my fourth album Umusa. People love the album and have been calling for the DVD,” said Kwa-Dwesi’s Richard who is a male nurse.

He has also recorded DVDs for all three of his previous albums.

“This album has surpassed all my work with 11 000 copies sold so far,” said Richard, who is a proud Ndzondelelo High School alumnus.

Lottery donation for Mdengentonga Primary SELBY MADIKANE EA SPORTS and the National Lottery Distribution Trust Funds (NLTDF) donated much-needed sports kit, sports equipment and a jungle gym to Motherwell NU 7’s Mdengentonga Primary School on Friday.

According to EA Sports Chief Executive Officer Dalan Phillip his non-profit organization (NPO) helps schools to complete the NLTDF donation forms.

He said that Mdengentonga Primary School’s Headmaster Mveleli Mbewu, the School Governing Body and the entire staff cooperated immensely with the organisation.

EA Sports helps mainly sports clubs and other community groups who wish to apply for donations from NLTDF. EA Sports, which is based in East London, was established in 2010.

According to Phillip they work in conjunction with schools throughout the Eastern Cape.

Phillip commended Mdengentonga Primary for their never-say-die spirit because ultimately their dream had now become a reality.

“At EA Sports we hope the school will take good care of the equipment. Your school worked tirelessly and today you get what you sweat for. You did not disappoint EA Sports.”

According to Phillip, the sports equipment cost R50 000 and the jungle gym cost R250 000.

Mdengentonga Primary Headmaster Mbewu stated that his school was thankful because EA Sports and NLTDF had made a very positive impact towards the school’s resources.

Mbewu who was visibly excited said, “Mr Phillip has been incredibly helpful to the school since the start of the campaign 15 months ago. I am extremely happy that our school is the first school in Motherwell to be a NLTDF beneficiary.

“On behalf of the school I want to say thank you to NLTDF and EA Sports. This donation that we publicly acknowledge, is going to make a huge difference to our learners.

Mdengentonga Primary SGB Deputy Chairperson Ntombomzi Manjezi stated that their school would never forget what EA Sports and NLTDF has done for them.

“Our hearts are bursting with joy because EA Sports and NLTDF have added value to our school. Motherwell coaches join forces to improve standard of football SELBY MADIKANE NEWLY-ESTABLISHED Motherwell Football Coaches Association (MOFCA) have set their sights high to improve the standard of football in their community.

According to MOFCA President Lukhanyo Wasa their primary aim is to develop coaches initially in Motherwell so that they can improve the standard of football.

Wasa said their project is designed to form a coaches’ forum where they would be able to empower one another.

Wasa explained, “We aim high in MOFCA. We want to do develop our coaches and empower them. It is good to help each other.

Some of our coaches lack some of the necessary skills but if we can share our expertise

with them, things would be much better.

“We would also like to help our schools because this is where talent starts off. So far, our biggest challenge is that we do not have funds. We would like business people to come on board. We are trying our best to raise funds so that we can be able to buy equipment.”

MOFCA General Secretary Thobela Dekeda said that MOFCA is independent and they would forge relationship with MOFA so that they would become MOFA’s associate member.

“Since MOFA is our only local football association in Motherwell, we look forward to becoming their associate member. We have also approached some coaches in NEBFA and ZAFA with the aim of extending our project,” said Dekeda.

Sira’s Car Wash Festival to be held at Motherwell NU 7 Bus Terminus SELBY MADIKANE HUNDREDS of community members are expected at Sira’s Car Wash Street-Soccer 5-a-Side Tournament and live music performance on Saturday, November 28 from 8am until late.

According to the festival coordinator, Simphiwe Sira Peter, the aim of the event is to keep the youth off the street and treat them to exciting street soccer and live music.

Sira said that Motherwell NU 7 was characterized by high levels of crime and drug abuse and the event would change the mindset of the youth.

“Fans will be entertained throughout the

day. The line-up of artists includes Vandals Group, Em Lloyd, Black Kings, Izzy-J, Tash Tosh, Vigie Da Poet, Itso and Ndzo, Liveliness Fam, Ice On The Mic, Sethu, Motherwell Boot Camp and DJ Smallz.

“We appeal to local people to arrive on time to avoid disappointment. Our veteran Master of Ceremonies Landile Kenqu will do what he is good at,” Peter said.

Event co-coordinator Zanele Zan Peter said teams will pay the participation fee of R140 and the tournament, that carries a prize money of R1 000, is played in the winner-takes-all format.

Zanele explained, “The tournament is played on a straight knockout system. So clubs are requested to register seven players. The last day of registration is Novem-

ber 27. We urge people to bring their camp chairs and the youth will not regret joining us. We also bring our music and there will be plenty of entertainment.

“After the event, a ‘happy-hour’ session will be held at 48 Hours Tavern. Persons under the age of 18 will not be allowed during the ‘happy-hour’ session”.

City managed to beat the second placed team EC Bees 1-0 during the midweek clash. On Sunday City had a comfortable 4-2 win when they took on the log leaders FC Elliot United.

City’s experienced winger Akhulile Dlilanga was a big threat to United defenders. Dlilanga delivered a perfect pass to Andile Njokweni who scored an opening goal in the second minute of the game while the visitors were still not ready for the game.

City doubled their lead when Bon-

gani Sam came up with a second goal in the 17 th minute. United could not use the wind advantage and City maintained their lead until the halftime.

In the second half City contunued where they left off. United decreased their deficit to 2-1 when Yolando Damoyi scored a fortuitous goal in the 69th minute. City made some tactical changes that paid dividends after they introduced Lutho Totwana for Akhona Manxola and Thulani Shumpa for Akhulile Dlilanga.

Gardens, Kwaru win NMB Mayoral Cup finals SELBY MADIKANE UITENHAGE outfit Gardens RFC and Zwide lasses Kwaru RFC won the Nelson Mandela Bay Mayoral Cup finals at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium a fortnight ago.

Gardens faced Uitenhage’s gallant youthful side Star of Hope in the finals and had to dig deep to win the finals 21-18.

It was Star of Hope that broke the ice but Gardens soon therafter stole the lead to make the score 7-5.

Stars gave a good account of themselves but Gardens, which is a side with many experienced players, emerged as winners.

Stars beat Progress in the semifinals to reach the finals. Although Gardens lost to Spring Rose in the semi-finals, they went through to the finals because Rose fielded ineligible players.
