Memorial service for elderly home blaze victims NCEBA DLADLA

HE Memorial service for the three elderly citizens John Tukani (73), Phillip Mqingwana (63) and Stanford Ngesi (71) who died in a blaze at Ekuphumleni Old-age Home in Zwide Township on Saturday evening will be held at St Peter’s Anglican Church at the corner of Spondo and Javu Streets in Zwide tomorrow (Thursday) 26 November. It starts at 5:30pm.

This was announced by the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro Municipality Council Speaker Cllr Maria Hermans.

She added that the demise of the three elderly citizens at the institution has left the metro municipality shattered.

The MEC for Social Development Nancy Sihlwayi also visited the bereaved families and promised to give them support.

Ekuphumleni’s director Mongameli Peter told Express Indaba on Monday that the cause of the fire was not yet known.

Sizakele Milton Nopote (70), who saw the fire and was lucky to escape unscathed, said he was sleeping when he heard a cry from Philip who was in a wheelchair.

“I know his voice. I rushed to his room, but I could not see because of the smoke. Knowing the place I surged forward and knocked at the door. But the door was closed,” a still visibly shaken Nopote said.

He said, Ngesi and Tukani died owing to smoke inhalation. Police and other members of safety and security personnel found the charred body of Mqingwana.

“Some of the residents were rushed to Dora Nginza hospital for treatment and were later released,” said Peter.

Reverend Bulelwa Mbulawa-Hans of St Mathews Presbyterian Church led the Ministers Fraternal in offering counselling to the affected families.

Police spokesperson Constable Mncedi Mbombo, said that police had opened three inquest dockets and that the cause of the blaze was still being investigated.

Mayor unveils festive season safety plan INDABA REPORTER WITH the theme, “Fighting Crime It Starts With Me”, the Bay safety and security apparatus has combined resources with the police for the festive season.

“How do we get them to be kids again?”

This lingering question by mayor Danny Jordaan came after he compared the life experiences of children from different suburbs in Nelson Mandela Bay and the effect crime had on them.

Speaking at the launch of the Eastern Cape provincial festive season safety operational plan, he pondered how a child from Summerstrand and one from Helenvale might recite Humpty Dumpty on their way to school.

“Perhaps the child from Helenvale would say that Humpty Dumpty was shot, causing his fall, and the child from Summerstrand might say he fell because he sat on the wall.

“Their environment is distorted.

How do we get them to be kids again? That is why we need to take back Nelson Mandela Bay,” Jordaan said.

The municipality, with the police and the community policing fo-

rums, in a combined show of force, launched the provincial strategy at the Port Elizabeth City Hall, sending a clear message that crime will not be tolerated.

Provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Celiwe Binta reaffirmed the commitment of the police to fight crime and said 30% of all serious crimes in the province were committed in Nelson Mandela Bay. “Crime increases especially during the festive season when criminals try to get a foot in the door. We will check businesses for compliance, the implementation of operation Fiela will continue in full force, and the theft of livestock and contact crimes as a result of alcohol abuse are also on our radar.

“Thank you, executive mayor for making safety and security a priority. I do so on behalf of our SAPS management for your initiative and combining our resources,” she said.

Jordaan challenged the police to decrease drastically the occurrence of serious crime in the area.

The Nelson Mandela Bay plan includes the deployment of traffic law enforcement officials, fire and emergency services members, lifeguards on our beaches and security personnel in collaboration with the police.

Jordaan calls for end to corruption THE municipality, in conjunction with the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA), has officially handed over the newly constructed Basela Qaqawuli Community Hall in Hlawula Street to the residents of Ward 17 in New Brighton.

Mayor Danny Jordaan emphasised that the official opening of the hall, named after late struggle heroes David Basela and Qaqawuli Godolozi, who came from the same area, was a service delivery initiative.

Basela became sick and died on Robben Island in the early 1960s, while Godolozi died in mysterious circumstances with Champion Galela and Sipho Hashe during the turbulent 1980s.

They became famously known as the Pepco Three.

“We are giving you this hall as a place where you can celebrate wed-

ding functions and funerals. A place where you will hold meetings and your children will celebrate success,” said Jordaan.

He said he was expecting the youth to use the hall to follow in the footsteps of big names from New Brighton like actors John Kani and Winston Ntshona, rugby players Lucky Mange and Themba Ludwaba and rugby and cricket players Khaya and Gerald Majola who used their different talents to uplift the name of their township.

Even though there were other service delivery needs like housing rectification, water, sanitation and electricity in the area, this attempt by the municipality should be applauded, Jordaan said.

“We are going to deal with those needs. You do not elect people to steal the money. You want service delivery. We must stop theft and cor-

ruption in the metro.

“Corruption is a huge problem that we must deal with decisively.

We must clean this city of corruption so that every penny goes to where it is supposed to,” the mayor said to a loud applause.

MBDA CEO Pierre Voges said the agency tasked with beautification of the Bay townships was excited about its job.

“We want every township citizen to be proud of his or her suburb, wherever she or he is,” he said, adding that they had asked for more funding from the treasury to do more work.

The family of Basela was represented by his widow Nobelungu (94) and two sons Thembekile (63) and Jongumzi (52), who accepted the honour and thanked the municipality for not forgetting his name.

This is after the residents she allegedly scammed out of their money managed to do a citizen’s arrest.

The accused allegedly sold them “jobs” at Transnet in Uitenhage for sums ranging from R500 to R1 700.

The victims had to give her their CVs, bank details and tax numbers.

A group of more than 30 unemployed young people, who have allegedly deposited money into the woman’s account, decided to take matters into their own hands when months elapsed without the fulfilment of the promise of employment.

They followed her to a house in Motherwell and demanded that she take them to their jobs, they told Express Indaba.

The woman then handed herself to the police at Mkoko Police Station in KwaNobuhle.

When the group got to the police station, they were surprised to find more of her alleged victims who went to the station to report her.

One of the victims claims that he had borrowed money from loan sharks to pay the woman.

“She said she was working for Transnet with some individuals in the Human Resources Department

and was able to organise a job for me if I paid R1 500. And, looking for employment I did not hesitate to organise it,” said Nikelwa Sidumo (31) who left her job in Cape Town because of this lucrative deal. She said she was promised R9 000 in pay while in two months of training.

“This could go up to R15 000 per month depending on how they ‘pushed’ themselves as employees,” she said.

Mkhululi Marwanqana (21) who

has training in computer software and first aid, said he was also promised a better job.

He paid R2 700 into her account but got worried and concerned when she was not answering her telephone calls after receiving the money.

Sergeant Majola Nkohli confirmed the arrest. She said the woman appeared in court and was remanded in custody for the bail application on 1 December.

Caught at Mkoko Police station were distressed and despondent youth and parents who lost their money after paying a woman who said she could get them jobs at Transnet.

Motherwell pastor investigated for rape of girl (16) NCEBA DLADLA A RAPE charge is being investigated against a Motherwell church pastor (43) who has been accused of raping a girl (16).

The pastor, whose name is known to Express Indaba, allegedly raped the minor on the morning of November 8 after a cross night service held in his church in NU10 Motherwell.

The pastor allegedly forced himself on the girl, who was sleeping at his house that morning.

According to the mother of the

Grade 11 victim, who may not be named, the child asked whether she could attend services at this fairly new church in the area.

“We have our own church, but she told me the other girls in the area do attend, so I had no problem. But when she asked to attend a latenight service I had a problem with it.

“I said no, until someone – a youth who said she was a worship leader in the church – came and asked that I let her go and said that they would be transported back home,” the mother said.

“The pastor delivered others home, but left two of us to go and sleep at his house,” the girl said.

“He said he feared that it was late and our parents were asleep. We agreed because we thought his wife was there. She was not.”

She said the pastor had slept in another room, but had come to their bed naked and slept with them. She said they had run away to pray and the pastor had told them not to make a noise because it would disturb the neighbours.

He said he would take them home, but he allegedly dropped the other

girl (17) at her home in Motherwell and told the 16-year-old he was driving back to the house to fetch something.

That is when he allegedly raped her and told her to wash while he was watching.

“He told me to wash and to tell no one. And when he took me home he gave me R50,” the girl said. She told her cousin, who later told the girl’s mother.

The 17-year-old girl confirmed the events to social workers and Express Indaba’s reporter. She said she would never put foot in the pastor’s

church again.

Her mother said she had told her what had happened.

The case has also been reported to the social workers at Dora Nginza Hospital, where the victim was said to be receiving medical attention and counselling.

A fuming principal social worker Pamela Rubushe said she was perturbed by the incident and hoped the law took its course.

Police spokesperson Capt. Alwin Labans confirmed that the police are investigating a case of rape against a man (43) who is said to be a pastor.

Policewoman’s memorial service postponed NCEBA DLADLA THE memorial service for police constable Nomathamsanqa Ivy Tsitsi will not take place this week as initially planned.

The Mtwesi family and the Tsitsis, her inlaws, are believed to be contesting the right to bury her.

Tsitsi, who was stationed at Zwide police station as a shift worker, was married to Mlungisi Tsitsi, another police officer. It is believed the two were on the verge of divorce.

Her memorial service was to be held at the Lilian Ngoyi Sports Centre, Kwazakhele, tomorrow.

Police had intended to use the event, which was to be preceded by a march and the distribution of pamphlets in nearby streets, to reiterate the call for communities to assist the police in the fight against police killing.

Three police officials have been killed here since the beginning of the year.

Tsitsi (36) was gunned down down at her home in Mcelu Street,

NU8 Motherwell, by an unknown man on Thursday, November 10 after returning home from night duty.

She was shot while still in her vehicle.

Port Elizabeth police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge confirmed that the memorial service has been postponed.

Pressed for comment, Beetge said: “The families from the two sides of the policewoman, her family and the inlaws did not agree on certain issues, so it became clear that we could not finalise the memorial ser-

vice. That’s all I can say.”

Mlungisi’s brother, Lulamile Tsitsi, agreed that there were problems that both families could not iron out.

“Yes, the memorial service has been postponed until further notice,” he said.

Tsitsi’s sister, Nobubele Mtwesi, said,“I do not know about the memorial service. We heard it was being organised by the police. We are still sorting things out as a huge family which is based mainly in Mount Frere.”

Man caught with 144 stolen sheep NCEBA DLADLA

MEMBERS of the Uitenhage police and traffic department conducted a successful routine roadblock and confiscated 144 sheep to the value of R187 200 that were being transported from Somerset East to Despatch on the R334 between Motherwell and Uitenhage last Thursday.

The law enforcement officers issued a total of 26 traffic fines to the value of R8 850 in the routine raid that started from 10-00 until 1pm, according to police spokesperson Warrant Officer

“A 40-year-old male driver was arrested on charges ranging from, possession of stock not marked in accordance with the stock theft act (Act 57 of 1959) and secondly, section 8 documents that were incomplete (Stock theft act, Act 57 of 1959) said W/O Swart, adding that the suspect was expected to appear in the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court soon.

Education department Helicopters and wedding bells for satisfied with matric exams M’well educare centre’s graduation INDABA REPORTER

THE National Senior Certificate examinations which started on October 26 will end tomorrow.

A total of 91 810 full-time and 19 102 part-time (110 912 in total) candidates were registered to write the examinations in 925 full-time and 118 part-time (a total of 1 043) registered examination centres.

The Eastern Cape province says it has remained up to date with the examination management plan for printing, packaging and distribution of question papers.

Question papers have been successfully delivered to all 23 districts on a weekly basis as per the directives from the Department of Basic Education.

The collection of question papers from district offices/nodal points by schools and centres has been done without incident daily since the beginning of exams and will continue until tomorrow.

Written scripts are being delivered to the district offices by schools and centres daily, and the control of scripts at district level is done daily to make them available for collection by the contracted transport company.

The Department of Education said in a statement that examinations had. progressed very well without any major challenges that far.

The conduct of the NSC examinations in all centres in the province are closely monitored and there are comprehensive plans to target perceived high-risk centres, including all those that were suspected or affected in irregularities last year.

Provincial examination monitoring teams consisting of 30 officials are deployed to all 23 districts and cover not less than 160 examination centres, the department says.

The district monitoring teams cover the rest of the exam centres in their districts. The moni-

toring team provides daily reports to the “nerve centre” at the provincial head office.

There are 18 selected marking centres spread throughout the province, and they will be fully functional from November 28 to December 15.

Eighteen contracts, including accommodation, meals for marking centre personnel, markers and marking venues, have been concluded and include social responsibility provisions, wherein the contracted marking centre is obliged to improve the conditions of an underprivileged educational institution in its vicinity.

Eighteen irregularity investigators were appointed to handle irregularities in their entirety.

They will be stationed at the marking centres to investigate and adjudicate on all irregularity cases identified. Marking centre personnel will be responsible for the effective management of all subject entries and the process will be completed by December 15, the department says.

Capturing of marks will be done in capturing venues, which will be in the following district offices: Mthatha, Uitenhage, Queenstown, Graaff-Reinet, Grahamstown, Sterkspruit, Cradock, and the East London Education Leadership Institute.

Some 55 capturers were identified to deploy to these capturing centres (additional capturers will be appointed because of the increase in the numbers).

The capturing of marks will be completed by December 18.

The province says it is fully prepared to capture the marks as per the examination management plan.

The Eastern Cape Department of Education says it is working very hard to ensure that it delivers a credible high quality examination and continues to implement astute monitoring and oversight capacity in all examination centres in the province.

During the ceremony the pupils of the school will showcase what they have learnt thought the year.

PE star wows as Whitney REPORTER THE newly refurbished PE Opera House will this weekend play host to The Greatest Love of All – The Whitney Houston Show - an international show which features PE-born songstress Belinda Davids.

Davids, who began performing professionally at the age of 14, has never had vocal training and boasts a 4-octave vocal range which enables her to sing any genre.

As a young girl one of the very first LPs Davids ever owned was a song called Hold Me by Teddy Pendergrass and Whitney Houston.

“The quality and style Whitney portrayed in this song struck a chord and my fascination with the icon grew. I sang Whitney’s music at every chance: at family gatherings, talent competitions and to friends whilst Belinda Davids stars in The Greatest Love of All – The Whitney Houston Show.

Whitney’s influence was so strong it inspired everything from her dress sense to her hairstyles.

As a young woman Belinda took on the club circuit and her performances left many people amazed at how similar she sounded to Houston. In the mid 90s Davids caught the eye of record executives at Tusk Records, and the solo album Belinda Davids followed.

Davids later opened shows for many international acts including Michael Jackson’s History Tour, The Manhattans, The Temptations and Peaches and Herb. Years after her debut album Davids decided to travel abroad to expand her musical career, which took her to Dubai, London and Hong Kong to perform in major hotels and clubs, with renowned success.

After many years on the road she fin-ally settled in Los Angeles where she started to focus on getting her solo career back on track and eventually caught the attention of many R&B artists who asked her to perform and tour with them, such as Keyshia Cole, Monica, Johnny Gill, Kelly Price and Keri Hilson.

In 2013 Davids snagged a last minute audition for the brand new Showtime Australia production The Greatest Love of All – The Whitney Houston Show and beat over 15 000 other applicants to take on the challenging lead role. Taking more than 80 000 tickets to date, the show has been an instant success with Davids as the marquee star. She continues to tour with the show internationally, keeping alive the music and spirit of her own musical idol.

The show will be staged at 8pm from Friday to Sunday this weekend in the PE Opera House. Tickets can be booked through Computicket.

The Express Indaba is once again looking for a baby to grace the front page of the last edition of the year – the Christmas edition on Wednesday, December 16.

The annual PE Express Christmas Baby Competition is aimed at making the day even more special for babies who are celebrating their first Christmas.

Apart from the honour of gracing our last front page of the year, the winning baby will also receive a photo shoot and images on a disk to the value of R1 200 from Pro Design Photographers.

This year, parents must enter their babies via our social media platforms. There are three platforms to choose from: Facebook – PE Express Newspaper At the top of our Facebook page, click on the Christmas Baby tab, which will take you to the entry form where you can upload your baby’s photo and enter all the details. You need to enter from a computer or laptop, because cell phone entries do not work.

The top 10 finalists will be announced on our Facebook page and in the Express Indaba newspaper on Wednesday, December 2.

The winner of the competition will be re-photographed by ProDesign Photographers and must be available between December 5 and 10 for the photo session.

“Local church bishops and heads of missions support this non-denominational mission. Apostle Neville Goldman is chairing the local campaign where the people of God - the church - speak with one voice, for the total healing of humanity,” said local pastor Albert Mzizi.

Dr Dag Heward-Mills is a well-known conference speaker and author of books, with 40 best-sellers, including The Art of Leadership, Loyalty and Disloyalty, and The Mega Church.

He has visited a number of countries, including some in Africa.

“As part of his contribution to society he is involved in community projects such as the establishment of a hospital, which is a non-profit organisation, located in Accra, Ghana,” said Mills-Thompson.

He said the hospital was a 40-bed facility, with general medical and surgical care and specialist services including obstetrics, gynaecology, ophthalmology and general surgery.

Last year, the Healing Jesus Campaign had some stops in the provinces of Limpopo, Free State, Gauteng and Mpumalanga.

KwaNobuhle’s Highland Spurs bag silverware NCEBA DLADLA HISTORY was made when KwaNobuhle’s Highland Spurs FC bagged the U-13, U-15 and U-17 Nobuhle and Despatch Football Association (NODEFA) 2014/2015 Season Trophies after beating all opposition in their respective age groups.

Club Manager Sandile Konono was all smiles at Jabavu Stadium recently relating how relieved he was that their players’ hard work had paid off.

“I want to thank coach Siyabulela “Zulu” Stuurman for the hard work. This wasn’t easy,” said

Konono.

The accolades for the U-11 Nodefa Championship went to Black Aces FC of KwaNobuhle.

They were crowned the Nodefa League Champions after a good run that included a revenge defeat of their nemesis Young Culture FC, also of Kwanobuhle.

A jubilant Bongolethu Ntshintshi relayed how his charges were crying bitterly after losing 2-1 to Young Culture in a tournament played during Easter Weekend, and said they were ecstatic that they had won the league after 30 games played.

“Players need encouragement and to know that you - the coach - believe in them. I told them

not to be despondent when they lost against Culture. I told them to let bygones be bygones and concentrate on the league. Thanks to their dedication (to training) and discipline – which goes a long way – we are the league champions today,” said Ntshintshi proudly.

According to Ntshintshi, his team is preparing for the Awards to be held in December in order to thank individual players for their sterling performances and hard work during the season.

“We’ll reward leading goal scorers, player of the year, players, most improved and most disciplined player of the year among others,” said Ntshintshi.

ZWIFA holds Mayoral Cup and ARS awards function SELBY MADIKANE ZWIFA held a combined function for the Mayoral Cup and Accurate Reworks Systems awards at Zwide Stadium on Sunday.

SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay President Monde Mhletywa delivered the keynote address.

Mhletywa said that ZWIFA clubs should rally behind their executive committee and stressed that time management was the recipe for sound management.

“I want to thank ARS for sponsoring ZWIFA because they have improved the standard. ZWIFA deserves an accolade for running the tournament successfully without any hassles. I would like to thank you ZWIFA for investing more of your time in organizing this event. Your planning has been effective,” said Mhletywa.

ZWIFA President Chippa Quntu said that the clubs should uphold the good standard of ZWIFA. He appealed to all the clubs to have junior teams and ladies’ teams in the

2016 season. He said any side without juniors would not be registered with ZWIFA in 2016.

ARS Director Mcebisi Mdwayi stated that they would increase the prizes of the tournament in 2016. ZWIFA former Deputy President Patrick Bra Pat Kinzela thanked ARS for rescuing ZWIFA during a crucial time.

In the u/13 girls’ category, Mdengentonga Primary was dominant.

They earned a hard-fought 14-12 win over Khulile Primary.

In the last game, Mdengentonga defeated Mpumalanga Primary 16-8.

Boxing promotors unite to stage big boxing tournament NCEBA DLADLA BOXING promoters in Nelson Mandela Bay have joined forces to stage a major boxing tournament in the metro in December.

Working under the theme: Unity is Power and bankrolled by the municipality’s Department of Sports, Recreation and Culture, the Metro Promoters Association is bringing a major boxing tournament – headlined by four national title fights – to the Uitenhage Indoor Sports Centre on Sunday, December 13.

In the main bout, Walmer Township’s Siphosethu Ncisana challenges East London’s Daluxolo Mangcotywa’s South African Miniflyweight title over 12 rounds.

In another 12 round main supporting bout, KwaNobuhle’s Siyabonga Blaauw fights against East London’s Thembelani Nxoshe for the vacant SA Flyweight title.

Nelson Mandela Bay’s lone SA female Junior Lightweight champion Nomampondomise Xotyeni, from KwaNobuhle, defends against Cape Town’s Bongiwe Silo while Walmer’s Nozipho Bell will challenge Gauteng Province’s Ndobay-

ini Kolose’s SA Lightweight strap. The two female bouts will be over 10 rounds.

In a 10-round international bout, former Eastern Cape heavyweight champion Unathi Jacobs will square off against Cape Town’s Mfundo Wondo.
