10 destitute families, the sick and the elderly. A sixth unit was also prepared as a multi-purpose facility for community meetings, classroom for the children and a skills development centre.

The containers were installed in December, and gave the new residents a formal dwelling in the so-called ‘Blue Village’.

This represented a life-changing upgrade from the dilapidated make-shift shacks they previously called home.

Apart from the housing units, the team from the Struandale Engine Plant also installed two

HE Ford Struandale Engine Plant has transformed the lives of 10 families from the Vastrap informal settlement in Booysen Park, Port Elizabeth, with the installation of shipping containers converted into safe and secure housing units.

Five containers were completely renovated, converted and subdivided to provide houses for

mobile toilets, providing essential ablutions in an area that has to make do without basic services such as sanitation. A handful of communal taps service the thousands of people living in the informal settlement.

The new containers joined the five existing units that were installed in 2014 as part of Ford’s annual Global Week of Caring. This gave the first 10 families a safe, comfortable and weatherproof environment that guaranteed dramatically improved living conditions - particularly in the cold and wet winter months.

“We have had an incredible response and support from around the world for the Vastrap container housing project that we started in 2014, and are delighted to launch this second phase that makes it possible to accommodate and improve the living conditions of 20 families in total,” said Hyron Muniz, Production Manager at the Ford Struandale Engine Plant and the project leader.

Port Elizabeth-based non-profit organisation, KICK, handled the extensive transformation of the containers, and co-ordinated the administrative side of the

“The Office of Human Settlements at the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality was integral to the project from the outset, providing the land for this housing project, and co-ordinating the selection process of the recipients in conjunction with local councillors,” Muniz said.

Man arrested for rape and house burglary NCEBA DLADLA KWANOBUHLE police arrested a 35-yearold man after he allegedly raped a 43-yearold woman and stole valuables from her house on Monday morning.

Police spokesman Sergeant Majola Nkohli said the family had been asleep at their home at Gawulayo Street, KwaNobuhle, in the early hours of Monday morning when their front door was kicked open.

“Knowing that there was a woman and

her daughter (22) in the house, the man ordered them not to make a sound or he would shoot and kill them,” Nkohli said.

“When the intruder made attempts to rape the daughter, the woman pleaded with him not to, and to rape her instead, explaining that her child had just had an operation,” Nkohli said.

After raping her, the man allegedly stole a plasma TV and a cellphone before fleeing.

Police had arrested the man on the same day of the incident.

“On behalf of the community and the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, I would like to thank Ford and all its partners for everything they are doing to assist those in need,” said Erika Potberg, a social worker in the Office of Human Settlements, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality.

“These housing units are a wonderful and much-needed solution, particularly for the disabled, elderly and vulnerable members of our community.”

Four arrested for possession of khat NCEBA DLADLA UITENHAGE police arrested four suspects aged between 28 and 32 in connection with illegal possession of khat last Friday morning.

“At about 10.30am, alert Uitenhage police, including dog unit members, on patrol noticed suspicious activities taking place in Graaff-Reinet Road,” police spokesman Gerda Swart said.

“As the members drove past the truck and an Opel Corsa, they noticed that four people were offloading boxes next to the road.”

Upon investigation, police discovered that the boxes contained khat.

“The police confiscated 13 boxes and the

Opel Corsa and detained the four suspects on a charge of illegal possession of khat,” Swart said.

They would appear in the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court soon, she said.

Uitenhage station commander Brigadier Leonie Bentley applauded the members for a job well done.

“We need to close all avenues for drug dealers and we appeal to the community to work with us in reducing crime by providing valuable information that will lead to the arrest of suspects who sell drugs to our communities,” said Brig. Bentley, adding that these drugs were doing harm to the community.

“I urge my members to keep up the good work and continue to crack down on these unlawful substances,” she said.

Foundation calls for harsher sentences for initiation deaths REPORTER THE Community Development Foundation of South Africa (CODEFSA) has called on the South African government to enact legislation setting a minimum sentence of at least 20 years for those found guilty of “crimes committed in the name of traditional initiation”.

In a statement, CODEFSA, a non-profit organisation working to curb the deaths of initiates in the Eastern Cape, welcomed the conviction and sentencing of six men last week in connection with the death of Lungile Nqwaba, a young man who died at an initiation school in Ntsizwa, Mount Ayliff in 2014.

“While CODEFSA welcomes the court judgment which will go a long way to serve as a deterrent for future perpetrators of killing of initiates, we believe that the sentence was too light for all those who were implicated in the

killing of Mr Nqwaba,” it said.

“AS CODEFSA we believe that a minimum sentence of 20 years would have been a suitable sentence for these criminals who killed an initiate.”

Five of the men, including the principal and owner of the initiation school at which Nqwaba died, were sentenced to five years imprisonment last week Monday. A sixth man will spend six years behind bars.

CODEFSA said it was seeking legal advice on whether it could appeal and have the sentence overturned.

“We call upon the national government to fast-track the passing of the legislation that will impose a minimum sentence of 20 years for all people who are the perpetrators of botched traditional circumcision including assaults and deaths of initiates.”

Every year, dozens of boys die from botched circumcisions and beatings, mostly at unregistered initiation schools in South Africa.

Bay employs 214 water leaks ambassadors NCEBA DLADLA A TOTAL of 214 previously unemployed Nelson Mandela Bay people are expected to start working in the water leaks reporting programme.

In an effort to bolster service delivery, about R16-million has been set aside by the municipality to purchase trucks for about R13.5-million and to employ 214

people in 22 wards as ambassadors.

“The ambassadors are employed to be the eyes and ears of the municipality in different wards specifically to report water leaks and other municipal problems,” municipal spokesman Kupido Baron said.

He said the 16 maintenance trucks, three pail trucks and one Super Sucker were to replenish the ageing fleet as part of improving

service delivery.

“The occurrence of water leaks in our city is high. Our target is to get the percentage to 10% or below,” he said.

The expansion of the Nooitgedacht scheme, the improvement of the Fishwater Flats freshwater treatment works and the desalination plant for industrial water must also be speeded up.

Millions of rands lost owing to

water leaks would be saved with the employment of ambassadors, Baron said.

The department would also address the problem of potholes, the eradication of the bucket toilet system and the problem of illegal power connections.

Ambassadors will make door-todoor home visits, spending at least 10 minutes per household explaining the importance of water con-

servation, sanitation and hygiene.

They will also hand out pamphlets and service booklets.

Baron said ambassadors would identify themselves before taking water meter readings.

Baron said financial constraints were the reason this projects was starting with just 22 wards.

The other wards would be accommodated when more money was made available.

Despatch police bid farewell to ‘Mama Nee’ Needham NCEBA DLADLA RETIRED Warrant Officer Elize Needham has been described as a dedicated official who spent many years in the police service with dignity.

It was a joyful occasion as police bade farewell to Needham (60) in Despatch on Wednesday last week. Colleagues dressed in traditional outfits for the farewell function for the beloved Needham, who was dedicated to her job for four decades.

the longest-serving member in the police in Despatch,” station commander Lieutenant-Colonel Nolucebo Zaza said at the function.

Zaza was full of praise for the retiring member who was known to her colleagues as “Mama Nee”.

“You served the organisation without fail, and your colleagues could learn a thing or two from you as you are leaving us with a good reputation and excellent service,” Zaza said.

“You inspired and became a role model to your colleagues especially in Despatch, where you spent 27 years and excelled”.

Mama Nee’s colleagues described her as a friendly and warm-hearted person who would be sorely missed.

A teary Needham thanked everyone and said they had made her cry, laugh and smile during her time at the station.

She also thanked her children for their support during trying times in her life, especially after she lost her husband, who was also a police official.

Needham also recalled moments after she joined the railway police in 1975 and joked about how her body had changed from that of a young woman to that of a mature one - but she stressed that she was not old.

NCEBA DLADLA SOME would regard a qualification in mechanical engineering from an esteemed institution like the former Port Elizabeth Technikon as their ticket to a successful career.

This sought-after qualification was, however, not what the doctor ordered for Mfundo McDonald Piti (37) of Kwazakhele.

Piti owns a thriving restaurant known as Nyamayipheli at the

corner of Mavuso and Njoli streets, near KwaNdokwenza.

Piti, who employs five people full-time as well as many part time workers during big events, was identified as an entrepreneur of note by the DA after winning the party’s entrepreneur competition recently Growing up in Kwazakhele, as the son of a taxi business owner, Piti saw abject poverty firsthand. He decided at an early age to take education seriously.

“I always believed in the adage

that education is the key to success,” said Piti, adding that he had, however, admired his dad and other local business people who made a difference in the community through business.

“I had this qualification, was ready to work, but not happy. I always wanted to do business and as a result after my qualification at PE Technikon, I left for Cape Town and later Johannesburg to pursue what I had always had a passion for - marketing, branding and corporate events.”

Then Piti researched and discovered that Port Elizabeth townships had a lot to offer in tourism - its people, historical background, music, arts and craft. “There was this special attire, dance, music and food that is distinctly African and township-based,” Piti said.

He formed Nyamayipheli and started inviting fellow township folk and reminding them of the African cuisine that they were missing.

Tourists are now starting to make use of Nyamayipheli tours, which include learning about township transport (taxis), visits to squatter camps, shacks and hostels.

The DA’s entrepreneur competition is aimed at reducing the high unemployment rate in Nelson Mandela Bay. In working with the private sector, the DA plans to empower entrepreneurs and create opportunities.

DA mayoral candidate Athol Trollip said Piti had won R10 000 seed capital in the competition and a chance to be mentored by businessman Andrew Jensen to expand his ideas and grow his business.

“I am very happy about winning the competition. This will open more doors for my business,” said Piti who provided the meals for DA leader Mmusi Maimane and his entourage during their visit to the city recently.

Johannesburg on January 11, moved to Durban on January 26, and then Cape Town on February 8. The overall winner will be determined by public vote and announced at the Design Indaba Festival in Cape Town on February 19.

The 10 finalists were nominated by a select panel of influential commentators on South African culture, including museum curators, radio and TV commentators, designers and editors.

Makhetha-Kwinana (28) said her use of Basotho blankets was a reminder of her heritage.

“It’s an interpretation of my culture in modern days. These traditional blankets are daily attire in Lesotho. When people move away to big cities, they leave their traditional culture behind. My work is a way of having the traditional keep up with the times.”

Her “Starburst Coat” consists of panels that come together at the back, resulting in the

perceived “starburst”. It was one of several items she sent to Elle Magazine last year for a fashion shoot – and it was Elle editor Emilie Gambade who nominated the piece.

“It is uniquely African; combines heritage, craft and beautiful proportions; it is timeless, colourful and says a lot about who we are and where we are from but at the same time it is exceptionally modern and very contemporary,” said Gambade.

Makhetha-Kwinana, who graduated with a national diploma in fashion design from NMMU in 2008, is a living advertisement for her boutique store in Port Elizabeth, which houses her “Thabo Makhetha” range. “My shop is a giant wardrobe.”

Johannesburg-based Ngxokolo (29), a knitwear designer who completed his BTech in textile design in 2010, has won numerous awards here and abroad for his Maxhosa by Laduma fashion label.

His shawl was nominated for MBOISA 2016 by designer and curator Tracy Lee Lynch, who said, “When I started looking for the Most Beautiful Object in South Africa … for a piece that I found really spoke to me, I found this particular piece – the shawl.”

“I always design with an intention to make my products relative and relevant to the South African market as much as possible,” said Ngxokolo, who is completing his masters in Material Futures at London’s Central Saint Martins.

The pattern in the middle section of the 3m by 1m shawl was inspired by the textures of ripe “umnqusho”, a traditional Xhosa dish.

REPORTER ALTHOUGH Thabo Makhetha-Kwinana has spent most of her life in South Africa, she has never forgotten her roots in Lesotho, her place of birth.

The Nelson Mandela Bay clothing designer crafts contemporary fashion using traditional Basotho blankets – and one of her designs, titled “Starburst Coat”, is one of the 10 contenders in Design Indaba’s prestige Most Beautiful Object in South Africa (MBOISA) 2016 exhibition.

She and another MBOISA finalist – knitwear designer Laduma Ngxokolo, whose works are inspired by traditional Xhosa culture – are both alumni of Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) in Port Elizabeth.

Gogos and mkhulus get wings to fly with sewing machines NCEBA DLADLA THE sponsorship of sewing machines, materials and uniform by Remax ABM has given the Kwaakhele Elderly Hub wings to fly.

The hub is led by the energetic Landezwa Luvuno (51), a professional teacher from Kwazakhele, who spends her afternoons on week days helping the elderly and youth spend time together doing work and exercise.

Luvuno believes that exercise is good for healthy living. “Exercise is protection against stiff joints and arthritis,” Luvuno said, adding that about 150 gogos and 10 mkhulus belonging

to elderly clubs which have youth development were part of the groups under her wing.

“The hub is made up of Amazing, Sunshine, Ilinge Labadala and Siyazama Elderly Clubs from Kwazakhele township wards,” said Luvuno. They now also have another elderly club, Sineenjongo from Veeplaas.

According to Luvuno, Sineenjongo saw the good in what they were doing and subsequently joined them.

“We organise the elderly in our streets to work together and not to die of loneliness in their homes. They do arts and craft and play sports,” Luvuno told Express Indaba.

games for fun and some also do stick-fighting for protection against thugs who want to attack them for their pension payout.

“The elderly people are always victimised at homes and in their communities. Teaching them the art of stick-fighting is not only good for the sake of taking part in traditional games.

It helps them against thugs who attack them,” said Luvuno.

She said they had elderly in their midst, mkhulus, who specialise in the art of stickfighting.

“Furthermore, we always wanted to start sewing but without material and machines this was difficult,” Luvuno said.

Their prayers were answered recently, thanks to New Brighton’s Remax ABM which sponsored them with sewing machines, materials and uniforms.

“We realise the good that Landezwa (Luvuno) is doing in the community and that being a community business we could plough back,” said Remax ABM Operations Manager Patience Ben-Mazwi.

Ben-Mazwi added that they owed their success to the township elderly who as clients helped them succeed when they started their property business many years ago.

“We want them to start their sewing business and succeed,” said Ben-Mazwi.

New Dean of Science appointed at NMMU REPORTER WHILE growing up as a young herdboy looking after goats and cattle with the only beautiful things being the surrounding nature and sky, Professor Azwinndini Muronga fell in love with nature and started asking questions that were considered taboo.

This curiosity led him to become a physicist interested in not only asking fundamental questions about nature and origins, but also how the powers of science and technology could be harnessed to change the world for the better, especially for those at the margins of society.

As the newly appointed Dean of Science at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan

University, Prof Muronga will be in the best place to achieve these goals.

His appointment comes into effect from April 1 this year.

Prof Muronga is a theoretical physicist, who started his tertiary education at the University of Venda with BSc degree in Mathematics and Physics, then enrolled for a BSc (Honours) and Master of Science (MSc) degrees in Physics at the University of Cape Town. Subsequently, he completed a PhD in Physics at the University of Minnesota in the United States.

He did his postdoctoral training at the University of Frankfurt and at GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research in Germany.

He joined UCT in 2005 as a senior lecturer until September 2010. Since

October 2010, he has been an associate professor at the University of Johannesburg and, until 2015, served as Director of the UJ Soweto Science Centre.

Prof Muronga’s own research field lies in the intersection of nuclear physics, particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology, studying the nature and properties of hot and dense matter in heavy ion collisions and astrophysics, as well as the properties of a new state of matter, Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP), which existed just for a microsecond at the beginning of the universe after the Big Bang and might also exist in the deep interior of neutron stars.

He has collaborated with scientists working on large experimental facili-

ties such as the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider facility in Brookhaven National Laboratory, New York and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at the European Organization for Nuclear Research known as CERN (Switzerland).

Apart from his own research interests, Prof Muronga is also an outstanding and recognised science educator, with a strong passion for, and interest in, taking science to society, particularly to rural and disadvantaged communities.

He has also been awarded for his outstanding contributions to science education and leadership.

In 2015, he was also elected President of the South African Institute of Physics (SAIP).

On his appointment Prof Muronga said, “I am excited and honoured to be joining NMMU at a time of such great opportunity. I am impressed and inspired by the quality and commitment of the University’s community and look forward to serving the Faculty of Science and working with the entire Faculty community in playing a centrally important role to the achievement of NMMU Vision 2020 goals. I would like to thank the entire NMMU community for giving me this opportunity.”

Bay television manager puts community in spotlight A YOUNG local television channel manager is taking great strides in ensuring Bay TV is community orientated.

His passion for people, community development and upliftment are what drove Bay TV CEO and Channel Manager, Lungile Nduvane (30), to become part of the flourishing community television channel.

and this year he is pursuing an MBA. Before moving to Bay TV, he worked at different production houses.

Having joined the channel in 2012, Nduvane has the mammoth task of ensuring that it is running smoothly and is reaching its targets and goals.

“I love everything about it, I love the pressure, I love the decision making, I love the impact my job has and I love the challenges.”

The Port Elizabeth-born young leader’s job entails sustaining the station, developing and managing its projects, and ensuring that it runs smoothly, “I want the channel to sustain itself for eternity. That’s why we are putting proper measures in place to en-

sure that the channel is sustainable for generations to come.”

“As a channel manager, I am able to influence the minds of young people so they can be proudly South African in all aspects,” he said.

His job also propels him to deal with well-established businesses at a decision-making level.

While Nduvane believes that Bay TV is doing well, he also believes the channel can do more than what it has already achieved in the past five years, since its inception. Bay TV is the kitchen of the broadcast industry and has produced the likes of Loot Love-SABC1 Live AMP, News presenter-Lisakhanya Pepe, to name a

few.

The impact that the station has had on the community since its establishment is one of Nduvane’s most important accomplishments.

One of the major tangible changes he has been able to implement in his four years with the station is the installation of the final control centre.

His ultimate goal is to see the channel becoming a “serious role player in the entire African continent”.

This year the channel, which is celebrating five years of broadcast, will, according to Nduvane, be implementing “major changes that will put the channel on the world map”.

REPORTER SUN International has teamed up with the makers of the acclaimed Great Moscow Circus and Great Euro Circus to bring Aussie: The Australian Circus Spectacular to South Africa in early 2016.

The talented, daring and slightly insane performers will travel the length and breadth of the country to dazzle and amaze audiences from 12 February to 22 May. They will be performing in Port Elizabeth at The Boardwalk’s Festival Lawns from February 25 to March 6.

Access Management coaches hold soccer clinics SELBY MADIKANE ACCESS Management coaches received a heroes’ welcome when they conducted soccer coaching clinics at Imbasa Primary School in Motherwell NU 12 on Monday.

The coaches were Morodi Ngquwe, former head coach of the Motherwell side Real Aces, and Mich D’Avray, former head coach of

Chippa United and England U/23 player.

Access Management is the company that manages the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium The target group was U/10 and U/13 boys.

The two coaches focussed on instilling basic football skills. Coach D’Avray stated that if football players were introduced to the basic skills at a very young age the players would really realise their full potential.

Coach Ngquwe also stated that the coaching session was immensely exciting. “The level of discipline was satisfactory. I have spotted many talented players at this school. I would

like to thank Imbasa Primary School for affording us this opportunity to equip these stars of tomorrow with basic football skills.”

PEFA win SAFA Build It Inter-Regional U/13 Boys Tournament SELBY MADIKANE PEFA made the Nelson Mandela Bay proud when they beat NODEFA 2-1 in the finals of the SAFA Build It Inter-Regional U/13 Boys Tournament that took place at Zwide Stadium on Saturday.

The LFAs that took part in the tournament which were divided into four groups were Eden, Bushmans, Cacadu, NODEFA, Graaff Reinet, Kirkwood, Kuyga, MOFA, NAFA, NEBFA, PEFA and Port Alfred.

The tournament started in a round robin format and ended in a knockout system where the group leaders played against each other in the semi-finals.

In the semi-finals PEFA defeated GraaffReinet 3-2 on penalties after a goalless draw while NODEFA beat Cacadu 1-0.

In the finals PEFA showed that they came prepared to the tournament when they handed a 2-1 defeat to a gutsy NODEFA. All the semi-finalists received playing kits and all participating players received certificates of participation.

PEFA went home with a trophy and gold medals while NODEFA got silver medals.

PEFA goalkeeper Sifiso Mokoena was voted the player of the tournament.

Dyonashe believes Baleni, better known by his moniker Toy Toyi, is in a league of his own. He is ranked second mini-flyweight in the country with a record of 10 fights, resulting in eight wins, a single loss and a stalemate.

“Toy Toyi carries too much arsenal, which
