VASTRAP RESIDENTS DEMAND SERVICE DELIVERY

Fiery protest!

An 8 ton milk delivery truck was set ablaze during a violent service delivery protest by residents of the Vastrap informal settlement near Booysen Park yesterday. The approximately 400 residents started their protest early, blocking roads which prevented motorists from entering Booysen Park via Stanford Road and other areas. Police were on the scene to restore order. Colonel Priscilla Naidu, police spokesperson, confirmed that the truck was set alight. “There were no injuries and no arrests were made,” Naidu said. Pandemonium over booze from hijacked truck NCEBA DLADLA THERE was pandemonium in Veeplaas, Port Elizabeth last Wednesday when members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) from Kwazakhele tried to collect hundreds of bottles of liquor from residents after the hijacking of a truck carrying the liquor. Refusing to budge, residents threw stones and assaulted a police officer who was trying to stop them from running away with cases of stolen liquor. “They threw stones and called police names saying they did not steal the liquor, it was given to them by amagintsa (the thugs) as a gift,” said police spokesperson Constable Nomdumiso Pohleli-Ntombana who was present during the event. According to Pohleli-Ntombana, this started around 11am when the Big Daddy’s Liquor Distribution company truck was hijacked in Uitenhage Road allegedly by three gunmen. “According to the driver (whose

Help police find murderer NCEBA DLADLA PORT Elizabeth members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) are investigating a murder case following the killing of man in the Northern Areas last Saturday. According to police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu, it is alleged that a 34 year old man was watching television in his lounge when he was gunned down by an unknown person on Saturday, 13 February at about 9:45am. “The suspect fired several shots through the security gate fatally injuring Shane Potberg,” said Col Naidu, adding that the deceased was alone in the room at the time of the shooting. Police have opened a murder docket for investigation, said Naidu. No arrest had been made at the time of going to press. The police are appealing to members of the community in the Northern Areas to come forward and assist them in

tracing the suspect/s. For information, which would be treated with confidentiality and could be offered anonymously, people could phone: 08600 10111. . In another incident, last Tuesday around 9:30am, an unknown gunman fired shots at occupants of a Nissan bakkie travelling in the middle lane on the M4. The suspects approached in the fast lane of the freeway and opened fire. “The man and woman, aged 19 and 25, who were seated in the back of the bakkie were injured,” Naidu said. The woman was shot in the left leg and the man in the left arm and foot and they were taken to hospital for treatment.” People with information could anonymously contact Crime Stop line: at 08600 10111. She emphasised that all information reported to police will be treated as strictly confidential. Naidu urged community members to be the eyes and ears of the police to make their communities safer.

name is known to Express Indaba), the thugs jumped on to the vehicle and ordered the driver at gun-point to drive to Veeplaas near Crown Supermarket,” said Pohleli-Ntombana. While one attacker was in the truck, others followed behind with the van. “They stopped the truck near Mabaso tavern, across Crown Supermarket in Veeplaas and forced the driver and his two assistants to offload three of the pallets on to their van. “They then called members of the community to help themselves to the four pallets of liquor still on the truck, before they fled. “In the meantime, two police officers, Constable Winston Pringle and Sgt Marcel Esbach, saw members of the community running away with cases of liquor. They became suspicious and followed the direction where they came from. They saw people in numbers sweeping the truck clean,” said Pohleli-Ntombana. The two officers called for backup. But, it was too late as the truck was

cleaned out and people had quickly disappeared. “Police entered the houses in search of liquor because, at this stage, the truck driver and his assistants had already reported the case of hijacking at Algoa Park Police Station. Kulapho basithuke basifanisa nayo yonke into le iphantsi kwelanga (It is then that they called us names comparing us to everything under the sun),” the police spokesperson told Express Indaba. Constable Bhungweni was injured during the attack, according to Pohleli-Ntombana. She added that one resident was arrested for assaulting a police officer. Even though police managed to get some of the cases of liquor back from the houses, no one was arrested for it. According to the police, no one took responsibility for the liquor being in their homes, and in some houses there was nobody present – only cases and cases of liquor. The manager of Big Daddy's outlet in Struandale, Steven Kotze confirmed that the hijacked truck came from his business.

Police filled the vans with booze taken from residents of Veeplaas.

Rapist’s 15-year sentence applauded NCEBA DLADLA PORT Elizabeth man Songezo Dwayi (25) has been sentenced to 15 years in jail for raping a minor. Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg said the mother had realised that her 15year-old daughter was pregnant. When she inquired about the father of the baby, her daughter told her she had been raped in July 2013

when she was looking for her sister in the Booysen Park area of Bethelsdorp. The victim was approached by Dwayi, who said he would help her look for her sister. However, he took the girl to his house and raped her. “A case of rape was only opened after the mother learnt about the pregnancy of her daughter,” Janse Van Rensburg said. Dwayi failed to appear in court in October last year and a warrant of

arrest was issued. He was rearrested and held in custody. He was sentenced on Monday last week. “Crimes against women and children are seen in a serious light and criminals are being convicted as we make Port Elizabeth a safer place,” family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit commander Major Sanet Winter said. She congratulated members for securing a sentence of 15 years.

Long term jail sentence meted out in PE regional court NCEBA DLADLA AN 18-year-old rapist was sentenced to 15 years in jail by the Port Elizabeth Regional Court last week. The 30-year-old victim was on her way to work in the vicinity of 10th and 11th Avenues in Walmer on

March 17, 2014 when she was assaulted with a spade and dragged into the bushes. She was then raped and robbed of her belongings. “Almost two weeks later, the victim noticed the suspect in the same vicinity and alerted the police,” police spokesperson Captain Janse van Rensburg said.

The suspect, Asanda Mayo, was arrested immediately. He remained in custody for the duration of the trial. In November last year he was found guilty of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, rape, robbery with aggravating circumstances and possession of a dangerous weapon.

Police, business and community partnership leads to major arrests NCEBA DLADLA THE Uitenhage police arrested more than 165 suspects during crime prevention operations at the weekend. Police spokesperson Lieutenant

Gerda Swart said the operations had run from Friday to early on Monday morning. Working with members of the community and the business sector to prove that fighting crime was a shared responsibility, the police were effective in their crime-bust-

ing endeavours in the Uitenhage precinct, Swart said. About 59 traffic fines totalling almost R30 000 were issued during the period and the police made various arrests for crimes including assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, robbery and common as-

sault. They had made four arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol, Swart said, and 54 fines had been issued for other liquor-related crimes. She said 27 suspects had been arrested for the illegal possession of

drugs. The police appealed to members of the community to work with them in reducing crime by providing valuable information that would lead to the arrest of suspects and the recovery of stolen property, she said.

R50 million boost to curb flooding in Missionvale REPORTER THE perennial problem of flooding in Missionvale, which has damaged houses, led to poor sanitation and roads, and stormwater challenges will soon be a thing of the past. This is thanks to the R50 million that the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has pumped into the area for the implementation and improvement of bulk stormwater, sanitation and civil services. About 2500 Missionvale homes will be connected to sanitation and water services by the end of April 2016. Work concerning sanitation and water services is in the final stages of completion. The work undertaken by the Municipality

is divided into five phases: sanitation, water services, stormwater infrastructure, construction of a pump station and road construction. About 25 SMME contractors have benefited so far, while 98 people have been employed in different capacities. The area has a relatively flat terrain and is surrounded by salt pans and a high ground water table. During heavy rains, the community of Missionvale experienced challenges around flooding and poor access for cars and public transport. The area used to be a shack area, and the residents had to rely on themselves for services. Electricity has been laid on for them, with water services provided through stand pipes located approximately 200 metres from each

Big plans to turn Bay into aerotropolis IT could take years to develop, but the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) wants to turn Nelson Mandela Bay into a huge aerotropolis. This was the message the company brought to business leaders when they shared their future plans for the Port Elizabeth airport at a business breakfast, co-hosted by the Nelson Mandela Bay business chamber. “We want to develop the cities around each of our airports,” said Zinhle Ntanzi, assistant property manager for ACSA. “The idea is to establish the airport as the centre of the development, while creating nodes and business opportunities for the rest of the city.” In the Bay this plan won’t be a “five-year concept”, Ntanzi added. “It is a long term plan that can take up to 20 years, but we already own land that will allow for development around the airport.” These planned developments include a space of 1,5 hectares on Allister Miller Drive, which could be used for an office block, vehicle showrooms and other retailers. Another piece of land

has been set aside for light industrial development, as well as distribution and self-storage facilities. A third area of 6 hectares can be used for manufacturing and construction companies. In the meantime, retailers and business owners will have the opportunity to join the airport, when the leases for 11 shop spaces, including a coffee shop, expire soon. “Most of the contracts are for open-concept retailers,” explained Lelo Kunene, commercial manager. Kunene said tender applications would soon be open for these contracts. These developments were set in motion as part of a plan to create a better balance between the income earned from airline tickets and the businesses at the airport. “We want to shift the focus,” said Greg Small, acting airport manager. “The passenger totals have been declining each year for the last few years, and we can’t be critically dependent on passenger numbers for our main income anymore.” – ODETTE KEMP

household. As part of the Political Leadership’s commitment to oversight and following the money, Infrastructure and Engineering Portfolio Chairperson, councillor Andile Mfunda, led a team of Infrastructure and Engineering Councillors and officials on a site inspection. During the site inspection, they inspected the progress made, interacted with affected communities, and checked on expenditure to date, employment opportunities created and SMME support. “I had to come here, we are pumping a lot of money into this area to improve services. It is therefore important that we as politicians who carry the mandate of the people follow the money and see if government work is being done,” Mfunda said.

DR DIBA

“Issues of sanitation are serious issues that affect people’s dignity. “As a political principal mandated by the ANC government, it is my duty to make sure that the dignity of our people here is restored. I am also pleased that the community of Missionvale are working with the Municipality to fast track service delivery”. He promised residents that before the end of April he would return to officially open some of the finished projects, together with the broader political leadership, led by Executive Mayor Danny Jordaan. Community member Thozama Qayiso said, “For leadership to come here and make commitments while we already see that there is work happening on the ground is encouraging.”

Gogo Rosy hits 90 (not out) on Valentine’s Day NCEBA DLADLA GOGO Rosy Ntlali of Port Elizabeth celebrated her 90th birthday in style on Valentine’s Day, Sunday, February 14. A party to celebrate this milestone was held for gogo Rosy at New Zion Apostolic Church in NU10 Motherwell. Organiser of the event, Chris Ludinga, said, “She deserves love as a member of the church and a senior citizen who was born on this day that’s associated with love.” Ludinga is the gogo’s Mkhokeli in church. The gogo was happy to celebrate her day with church members who showered her with many gifts and most of all, love.

According to Ludinga, gogo Ntlali, who struggles with her sight, was reportedly lost for the whole day sometime last year. According to her son, Vukile Ntlali (45) who now stays with her, the gogo needed to be looked after because she sometimes forgets things. “Of course, not her church hymns and the Bible,” he quipped. The widowed gogo had nine children. She is now survived by seven; two males and five females, 26 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. “The church surprised us especially Mr Ludinga. We want to thank their leadership and members from the bottom of our hearts. They have done a great thing for our mother,” Vukile told Express Indaba.

Thousands attend Navy weekend in the Bay SASHIKA PILLAY ARMED Forces Week has been off to a successful start as thousands of people visited the Port Elizabeth harbour during the weekend to view the Navy’s warships and submarine. Navy Spokesman Commander Greyling van den Berg said he was overwhelmed by the positive response they received during the weekend. “We had about 25 000 people at the harbour this weekend. We were truly overwhelmed with the positive reaction from

the people of PE and we were also grateful that they decided to spend their Valentine’s Day weekend with us. “We have not received any complaints. There were people who waited for hours to view the ships but they mentioned that it was worth the wait,” van den Berg said. There will be fan parks held at the Kings Beach area today until this coming weekend, with a large military exhibition from 8am until 5pm daily, except on February, 21, when the exhibition closes at 3pm. During the exhibition, the public can experience a range of military hardware, various weapon systems, radar systems, ar-

moured vehicles and artillery guns. The public will also be allowed to engage with South African National Defence Force (SANDF) members at these displays and climb on to and into the various display vehicles. The night shooting event which takes place tomorrow night, February 18, is expected to be one of the highlights of Armed Forces Week. “The night shooting will be an absolute highlight. There will be thousands of people attending and watching,” van den Berg said. The night shooting demonstration at Kings Beach starts at 7:30pm and will last

for about 40 minutes. The demonstration will end with a ball of fire detonating on Kings Beach. “People should bring their picnic baskets and chairs and come down to the Kings Beach area or they can watch the night shooting from nearby restaurants; it will be a lovely night out and something very different for Port Elizabeth,” van den Berg said. The main event, Armed Forces Day, which takes place on February 21, in Beach Road, will include a large military parade followed by a military capability demonstration.

Merged Primary Schools celebrate Valentine’s Day in style NCEBA DLADLA HENRY Nginza and KK Ncwana Combined Primary Schools in Kwazakhele, Port Elizabeth held a Valentine’s Day celebration last Friday 12 February. According to school principal Simo Vambe, it was decided to celebrate this day on Friday, since Valentine’s Day this year fell on the week-

end. “We held this celebration to give our pupils an opportunity to show love to one another. To do this, we decided to give them a chance to showcase their talents through modelling,” said Vambe. The celebration also served as a fundraiser for the school.Vambe said they were able to make a success of the event owing to the support of their teachers, pupils and a few parents.

He said the teachers had explained to their pupils what Valentine’s Day was, and why it was celebrated and the children were encouraged to dress in the colours associated with love - red and white. According to Vambe the school with its 1 200 pupils, is a merger of KK Ncwana Lower Primary School and Henry Nginza Higher Primary schools, making it one of the biggest primary schools (in numbers) in the townships.

Vambe said the two schools merged because they were odd in the new dispensation. Explaining, he said, we no longer have Grade R to Grade 4 Primary Schools and Grade 5 to Grade 7 Higher Primary Schools. “Primary Schools start from Grade R to Grade 7 and this merger has given us just that. We also got the benefit of bigger numbers and hence we might be one of the bigger primary schools in the townships,” Vambe said.

Girls turned into queens for a day SASHIKA PILLAY

But it was the smiles on their faces that lit the room as girls from the Reach for a Dream foundation became queens for a day. The Queen for a Day initiative is a national project where a number of girls who are facing life-threatening illnesses, are treated to a day out of their hospital and medical environment. Seven girls aged 13 to 18, arrived at Protea Hotel Marine on Friday and were treated to a mini-makeover where each of the girls enjoyed uninterrupted pampering which included a make-up session, inspirational beauty talk, manicure and pedicure. The girls also had a chance to walk the red carpet where Mrs Port Elizabeth 2015, Angelique Adcock, taught them how to walk with confidence like true queens. With excitement on each of the girls’ faces, they each made their way down the red carpet and were ready for their crowning ceremony where they were presented with a rose, sash and crown. The ceremony was followed by a high tea to celebrate these brave girls and commemorate the day. The girls also received a goodie bag to remember their special day. Each girl was made to feel special and this initiative allowed them a day out to socialise with other brave girls and realise that they are not alone. Reach for a Dream coordinator, Heather Mazomba, said the project is about building confidence and self-esteem of young girls. The aim of this event was to make the girls feel beautiful and special. “Queen for a Day is to make the girls feel pretty. This is to let them know that although they are fighting an illness, they can still feel very beautiful. It also allows them to have a day away from the hospital environment.” “There are three stages of Queen for a Day. This includes the pampering, crowning and walking the red carpet. This event is to encourage them and give hope,” Mazomba said. The Reach for a Dream Branch Manager, Michelle van Huyssteen, said she was thankful for Protea Hotel Marine’s continued support. “The Protea Hotel Marine is such an awesome supporter of our foundation. They supply us, through the Hotel Property Fund, free office space and host all our dreamers country wide that visit PE as their dream. Our Queen for a Day events, volunteer meetings, etc. are also sponsored by them, so they are angels to our Foundation,” van Huyssteen said. Volente (15) who was one of Reach for a Dream’s queens for a day said she enjoyed everything about her day because it made her feel special. Jade (13) who was also part of the queens for a day group, described her day as a ‘happy day’. “My day was nice; it was a happy day. I loved the make-up the most,” she said. Yolanda (17) said she had a fun day and enjoyed the make-up and beauty session with the other girls.

NCEBA DLADLA CONSISTENCY will be the key word when Chippa United hosts Free State Stars at Nelson Mandela Bay stadium in an Absa Premiership encounter this Saturday. This according to Team Manager Luthando “Trompies” Zibeko. Kick off is at 3:30pm. Chippa, who are coming from an important 1-0 away win against Bloemfontein Celtic at the weekend – thanks to a late goal by substitute Rhulani Manzini – still have a long way to go before they can start celebrating. That win was preceded by a 2-1 win against Jomo Cosmos at Buffalo City stadium in East London last week. “It is the match against Ea lla Koto (Free State Stars) this Saturday that was very important for Head coach Daniel “Dance” Malesela’s squad,” said Zibeko. They are at number six on the

log standings after 19 games, with 9 wins, a stalemate and nine losses while their opponents were lying at No. 12 in 18 games with six wins, four draws and 10 losses. “We want to win every match for our loyal supporters. Our focus is against Free State Stars,” Zibeko said, adding that they were happy to be playing at Nelson Mandela Bay stadium again. Zibeko said that being an Eastern Cape team, the games they played in East London were important for building a support base in the whole province. “We want to urge Nelson Mandela Bay supporters and the football fans in general to come in droves to support the match. We need their support behind the boys on the match day,” said Zibeko. He added, “The mood in the camp is high. The coach and the players know that they must win the match. It’s important for us to be consistent. We cannot win today and lose tomorrow. Consistency is the key.”

IT was all joy and smiles on the faces of members of the Zwide community club, Everton Football Club, when the National Lottery Distribution Trust Funds (NLDTF) presented them with big boxes filled with kits and sports equipment on February 11 in Zwide. Everton FC, which is affectionately known as AmaNgesi, is one of Zwide Football Association (ZWIFA)’s oldest sides. According to Everton FC President Zolile Majola the sponsorship could not have come at a better time for the club which consisted mainly of unemployed members and learners. Majola said that they applied to NLDTF because their club was in dire need of kit and sport equipment and they noticed that NLDTF had come to the rescue of other clubs and other community organisations. Majola said, “NLTDF did not hesitate and replied positively to Everton FC. The donation was R200 000. The money was spent on buying full sets of kit for the U/13, U/15, U/17 and senior teams, soccer boots, tracksuits, a club’s banner, match

balls, practice balls, shin guards, field markers, bibs, whistles, T-shirts and training equipment for our officials.” Majola revealed that their main objective of keeping the youth off the streets had been achieved. “I am overwhelmed by this generous donation from the NLTDF. The youth in our community will be kept busy in sport rather than doing criminal activities. “The morale of our players has been boosted. We are really excited because our club has been rescued by NLDTF. I would like to inform people who feel that playing lottery is a mere ripping off of their money, that playing lottery is (also) to help people and community organisations who are needy. “So I encourage our people to play lottery games just for the good cause. I would like to thank NLTDF for this generous donation that they have made possible to us. It is quite clear that NLTDF are investing in disadvantaged communities. I fully understand that the lives of our players have been changed.” Majola stated that their club would take good care of the equipment and kits, so that the next generation would be able to benefit from it as well.

Everton FC Head Coach Mzwabantu Disco Quntu, Head of Development Mkhuseli Ngalo, Club Official Solomzi Quntu, President Zolile Majola, Secretary Noluthando Diniso with their junior teams show the sets of kit and equipment that NLTDF has sponsored them with.

Fans treated to thrilling ABC Motsepe league games SELBY MADIKANE LION City who are known among fans as No Surrender, No Retreat or Nomeva, and who are making headlines for winning streaks went down 1-0 to their arch-rivals Young Ideas in their ABC Motsepe League game at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium on Saturday. The atmosphere was electric and energetic with the supporters wearing red and black. Before the game large crowds of passionate supporters sang and danced in front of the pavilion. The game reminded fans of yesteryear’s township soccer. City wanted to win the game to consolidate their grip on top of the ABC Motsepe League log table standing while Ideas were out for revenge as they lost 3-0 to City in their first round clash last year. Ideas also wanted to cement their position in the top eight of the log table standing. City are still on top of the log thanks to Kokstad Liverpool who held FC Elliot United to a goalless draw at Elliot High School grounds. As things stand City are still lea ding the pack

with just two points above FC Elliot. The game had all the Kasie football lovers wanted to entertain them. The players showed their own traditional style of playing; they dribbled. The “show me your number”, “shibobo” or “tsamaya” were the order of the day. City dribbling wizard Akhona Serero showed his football displaying skills for a short while because Ideas wing back, Aphiwe Skhoko Mambuku, marked him tightly. As a result Serero had a quiet game. Freedom FF Funani and Andile Zane Gxekwa displayed their class and the stadium was abuzz. City’s new signees Amandla Amigo Mrwebi and Zithulele Ala Mhlontlo did not add value to the game and Ideas skipper Zukisani Benni Ngalo, who was expected to pull strings, could not find his rhythm. The hero of the day was Mnoneleli Mayeye Zitho who scored a thunderous shot that sent Ideas supporters into raptures. Strikers from both sides lacked the technique and composure and they made poor decisions in front of the goals. All in all, the game had all positives and the game of football was a winner. Showvillage United redeem themselves SELBY MADIKANE MOTHERWELL side Showvillage United redeemed themselves when they overcame Walmer side Young Cosmos 1-0 in their SAFA NMB SAB Regional League clash at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium on Saturday. Kuhle Sifanele’s goal was good enough for the Stallions to depart Motherwell NU 2 Stadium with all three points, but it was a game in which both sides would kick themselves for missing good, clear-cut chances. The game was evenly balanced with both sides pursuing goals, but their strikers took wrong decisions and applied wrong techniques. Cosmos could have equalized when Show-

village’s goalkeeper misjudged the tame shot that hit the wide post. Sifanele tapped the ball into the empty net to give his side a long-awaited victory following a series of losses. In a highly contested Motherwell derby Ikamva Movers shared a 1-1 draw with Royal Bucs. Movers dangerman Mbongeni Keita Yako scored his side’s goal while Bucs wing Sithembele Marks Rhuda pulled their equalising goal. Movers and Bucs are lying at the tail end of the log table. Another Motherwell side, Motherwell Academy, drubbed Despatch Pioneers 3-1 at Khayamnandi Ground in Despatch. Following their three wins in a row, Camper United went down 1-0 to Highland

Spurs at Jabavu Stadium in KwaNobuhle. Hotspurs, who are not an easy side at their slaughter house – Moerdyke, walloped Imbabala Young Stars 3-0. NMMU Madibaz humiliated Island City 4-0 at NMMU Second Avenue Campus Ground in Summerstrand. Callies dropped three valuable points in their goalless draw with the gutsy Fairview Rovers at Zwide Stadium.

Community football club is growing by leaps and bounds SELBY MADIKANE MOTHERWELL NU 9 newly formed community club Volcano FC, which was established for girls in January last year, is growing by leaps and bounds. When the club was established it had only two girls’ teams which were U/11 and U/12.

According to Volcano FC founder Mzuvukile Reggie Khesi, they now have six teams. Khesi said, “I am very proud that we have three boys’ teams and three girls’ teams this year. Many parents requested that we should allow boys to join our club. We decided to respond to the call of the parents positively, because our aim is to curb crime in our community using sport as a tool to unite our children

against this enemy. We believe that if the youth is kept actively busy in sport, some of them will not become criminals.” One of the club’s founder members, Khululekile Khesi, bought kit for their club last year. Reggie also bought a new set of kit. Reggie said, “We dig deep into our pockets so that our club can move forward. I decided to buy a brand new set of kit. Our teams are

so enthusiastic and we do not want to disappoint them. I also used my creativity to make training equipment for the team.” Sindi Yako, who is also a founder member of the club, stated that they requested parents to buy soccer boots and balls for their children. Yako said that the response was tremendous. “We appreciate the role that some parents are playing for their children. This helps our club to grow. The children are motivated and their confidence is very high because their parents are supportive. “I would like to appeal to those parents who do not take sport seriously to come on board. I would like to thank the supportive parents because they make things much easier.” Reggie stated that their major challenge was transport for players and he appealed to members of the community to lend a helping hand in this regard. Since they are not affiliated to any local football association, the club participates in friendly matches and community tournaments. According to Reggie they will apply to MOFA for affiliation in 2017. Botile in a must win title fight against Weliya NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay could add a South African Super Middleweight title to its name if boxing trainer Caiphus Ntante’s wishes should come to pass. KwaNobuhle’s Nomampondomise “Lily” Xotyeni, is the only SA Female Junior Lightweight champion based in the Bay. She was joined recently by Walmer Township’s Siphosethu “The Gift” Ncisane who won the WBF International Strawweight scrap. Caiph Camp head Ntante believes his charge, Masixole Botile of Kwazakhele will make it three. “Botile will be crowned the new SA champion when he faces current champion Balimo Weliya at Orient

Theatre in East London on 27 February,” said Ntante. The 12-round title fight is brought courtesy of Sinyabi Rise with the People’s Boxing Promotions. “We’ve already signed a contract to fight against (Balimo) Weliya for the SA title. We’re certain we’ll beat him this time around,” said Ntante, beaming with confidence. Ntante said they knew the East London-based SA champion very well as he used to train in his stable and sparred with Botile during his short stint here. Ntante said they (his camp) thought that they had done enough to sway the decision in a very close encounter between the two gladiators in their first duel which Weliya won on a split points decision over 12

rounds at Mdantsane Indoor Sports Centre in East London in March 2013. This was, incidentally, the last day the Democratic Republic of Congoborn and naturalised South African Weliya laced gloves. Boxing SA Ratings Committee called him, and a host of other national champions who have not been defending their titles in a long time, to defend their titles in the space of three months, or risk forfeiting them. According to Ntante, Botile, who is lying at number three in the division, is the only credible opponent that BSA approved to fight Weliya because they had a close first fight. He believes the result will still be close, but that his charge, Botile, will be declared the winner this time.

SANABO passes Mandela Cup Pretest with flying colours in the Bay - Andile Mofu NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay hosted a very successful Nelson Mandela Cup Pretesting tournament at the Lilian Ngoyi Sports Centre in Kwazakhele at the weekend.

All the provinces in the country were involved in the tournament which was supported by the Nelson Mandela Bay Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture. It was held under the auspices of the national open boxing federation South African National Amateur Boxing Organisation (SANABO). According to SANABO president Andile Mofu, the provinces released the crème de la crème of their elite male and female boxers - because of the nature of the tournament. They are also preparing for the national

championships. Mofu said each province was represented by five weight classes of male fighters as well the three Olympics standard female weight divisions, namely 51kg, 60kg and 75kg. “This is the pretest tournament which is a measure of our readiness to host the Mandela Cup in July this year,” said Mofu. The Mandela Cup is an international boxing tournament by African countries to honour the legacy of former state president Nelson Mandela, the icon of freedom, peace and democracy who was, himself, a former boxer. According to Mofu, they were testing the standard of their boxers, officials, the fight venues, accommodation and transportation. Given a thumbs-up by the international open boxing governing bodies

AIBA (International Boxing Association) and (AFBC) African Boxing Confederation, the Mandela Cup would be regarded as a preparatory test for the 2016 Rio Olympics as well. Indeed, provinces brought their best boxers in the pretest fights from the quarter-finals to the finals in all the divisions. They delivered quality boxing matches on Friday before the superb finals on Saturday. Ring officials, referees and judges were not only immaculately dressed in their black and white uniform, they did a wonderful job picking up the right winners in the ring. “We are very happy. SANABO and Nelson Mandela Bay are ready to host the Mandela Cup. The standard was high in all respects. I am pleased.” said Mofu.

Aces play against Amakhosi in ZWIFA JZ Top 8 tournament finals GOLDEN Aces will play against Major Chiefs in ZWIFA JZ Top 8 inaugural tournament finals at Zwide Stadium on Saturday, February 27. Aces put on an impressive performance when they defeated the cup specialists Shining Stars 2 – 1 in the first semi-finals at Zwide Stadium on Sunday. Aces goals came courtesy of Mxolisi Loli and Sinethemba Kilibe while Andile Ace Singapi banged in Shining Stars’ consolation goal. The game produced some fireworks with the 12th

man being kept on their feet. Major Chiefs proved that they were the unrivalled side in ZWIFA when they gave the gutsy Zwide Pirates a 4-2 hiding. Amakhosi were untouchable and unstoppable throughout the game. Amabhakabhaka put up a good fight but Amakhosi demonstrated their prowess and experience. Simamkele Pefile scored a brace with Lwando Mfino and Nkosinathi Ziwa registering a goal apiece for the black and gold side. The Ghosts’ goals were

scored by Siyabulela Mlilo and Wandisile Sikelwa. Amakhosi should avoid complacency when they play against Aces in the finals and stay focused for the entire regulations time. Although Chiefs are the hot favourities, Aces will not be easy opponents during the finals. – SELBY MADIKANE Zwide Pirates gave a good account of themselves against Major Chiefs. Sparks edge out Ama-Units MOTHERWELL masters’ side Sparks accumulated three valuable points when they edged out Ama-Units 2-0 in the SAFA NMB Masters Association League game in Uitenhage on Sunday. Ama-Units played an exciting football game, but could not find the back of the net.

Sparks did not squander their opportunities and their strikers Melumzi Nongwe and Monde Nangu scored a goal apiece. The KwaZakhele side has shown in the past that they have it in them to bounce back, but this time around things did not go their way. Addo Masters kept their hopes

of winning the league trophy when they defeated Eleven Attackers 2-1. Ayanda Zinganto and Vuyani Mabudla scored a goal each for the Addo side while Lutho Ngesi came up with Attackers’ goal. PE All Stars devastated Raymond Mhlaba with a 2-0 victory. Monde Tyaliti and Monde Dikana

scored a goal each. Volkswagen Masters shared a 2-2 draw with Veeplaas Masters. VW striker Patrick Reid and Veeplaas goal poacher Luyanda Ntengento scored a brace each for their sides respectively. Abahlobo played to a 1-1 draw against Zwide Masters. Mongame-

li Ntsila and Makwedinana Enosi scored a goal for Abahlobo and Zwide Masters respectively. Valencia lost 3-1 to Soweto Masters. The goals of Soweto Masters came courtesy of Lizo Klaassen (a brace) and Andile Ketelo. – SELBY MADIKANE

Plaatjies and Mapu guide AmaKenya to a comfortable victory YOUNG Callies star players Khayalethu Eric Plaatjies and Kamvalethu Mapu guided their side to a comfortable 2-0 victory over City Friends during their NODEFA Cup Quarterfinals clash at Jabavu Stadium in KwaNobuhle on Sunday afternoon. Friends were not friendly at all, but Callies, on the other hand, were not careless. Friends came to the game with the intention to stop Callies who are hot favourities for taking the honours. The game was breathtaking with sides

searching for an opening goal. The fans who were rallying behind their sides saw Callies pulling one goal courtesy of Plaatjies. Friends came up strongly, taking the game to AmaKenya who looked ready for a big showdown. Friends failed to score their golden opportunities. As a result Callies made the final score 2-0 after a well taken goal by Mapu at the halfway mark of the second half. Callies managed to keep their counterparts out of their territory for the rest of the game.

Kabah United Brothers suffered a major setback when they were defeated 1-0 by Chelsea in an enthralling game. Jamaican Stars beat Really Rangers 2-0. In a tough game, fans saw Despatch Pioneers succumbing 4-3 to Golden Chiefs after a 1-1 fulltime draw. The semi-finals are set to pull large crowds to Jabavu Stadium on Friday evening.
