“We hear that the ANC is giving us Nombiba as a Ward Councillor in the 2016 Local Government Elections. We say, hell no. Not that one. He is being investigated by the Hawks,” said Ntombizodidi Ntshona (64), the Chairperson of Thulamangwane Community Project.

The elderly woman claims to have been fired by Nombiba from the project but was reinstated when the case of corruption and the embezzlement of funds within the project was taken to the CCMA. “I am not being investigated. He is the one being investigated by the Hawks,” said gogo Ntshona.

“We don’t want a councillor who is under investigation. Nombiba promotes factionalism and does not bring projects to develop local residents but instead, claims the projects belong to the ANC so he has a right to decide who is to benefit from it,” Zwelandile Booi, a resident said.

They claim their councillor was not helpful to the community.

“Destitute and vulnerable families who couldn’t bury their departed contacted him for help and he couldn’t. We ourselves contacted the municipality and were shocked to learn that our councillor had only to write a letter to ask the municipality to assist through the Assistance to the Poor Programme,” said one resident.

WAZAKHELE, Port Elizabeth residents in eMagaleni area sang and toy toyed on Monday afternoon showing their displeasure with what they believed was the re-election of Ward 20 ANC Councillor Bongo Nombiba.

They accused Nombiba of ineptitude, corruption and putting the name of the ANC in disrepute.

They claim to have called on his office for assistance with housing, water and electricity service delivery, without any luck.

About 100 residents, including little children, took part in a protest accusing Nombiba of failing to serve the community of Kwazakhele and not being fit for election as their representative.

Forum aims to bring back good-quality learning, teaching AN attempt to bring back good-quality learning and teaching to Port Elizabeth schools has been started through the creation of the District Education Forum (DEF).

According to chairperson Mazotsho Dukwe, the DEF is a statutory body which is gazetted and it is made up of all education stakeholders including teachers unions, department officials, representatives from school governing bodies, school management teams, representatives from business and social partners.

While this initiative was started in PE, schools from Despatch and Uitenhage have also been part of the structure aimed at improving education results in the whole of Nelson Mandela Bay. “We held an education indaba in Port Elizabeth’s district office on

February 12 with the aim of addressing problems that bedevil our education,” DEF deputy chairperson the Reverend Dr Xolani Tengo said.

He said five factors had been identified as needing special attention – school functionality, quality learning and teaching, closing of schools, nutrition and embezzlement of school funds.

“We cannot afford to see people, for instance, just closing schools owing to problems facing education. Stakeholders must engage in dialogue while teaching and learning continue,” explained Tengo, when asked what they meant by closing schools.

Schools in the Northern Areas were closed for weeks from the start of the school term, owing to parents’ complaints on a number of issues.

“To deal with the challenges head-

on, we thought it was important for the Department of Education to train and capacitate school governing bodies as the functionality of schools is its core business,” Tengo said.

He said they were aware that General Motors South Africa was doing this to some extent, but felt much more was needed.

Dukwe said the DEF believed schools should establish committees for the procurement of school nutrition.

“Principals should not micromanage the governing bodies. They are the accounting officers to the department as managers of schools, but the governance of schools should be the prerogative of the governing bodies.

“That way, we could minimise fights and allegations of corruption in schools,” Dukwe said.

Premier gives turnaround plan for education at Sopa EDUCATION was among the key areas singled out by Eastern Cape Premier Phumulo Masualle in his state of the province address (Sopa) at the provincial legislature in Bhisho last Friday.

He admitted that the province was facing some serious challenges as far as education was concerned.

“Our analysis of the state of education in the province has revealed a number of challenges that require urgent intervention,” he said.

“These include the existence of a large number of schools that are dysfunctional, resulting in high drop out and failure rates; the province has a number of small and unviable schools, resulting in less than opti-

mal use of resources; district offices are also poorly capacitated to support the schools; there is a dire shortage of appropriately qualified and skilled educators in critical subjects and in certain phases; as well as low levels in numeracy and literacy at primary education levels that are limiting the ability of learners to progress smoothly up the system,” the premier said.

In the light of these, he said, the executive council had since adopted a transformation plan to improve the system over the next three years.

The plan will, among other things, focus on increasing the number of functional schools by appointing capable principals to lead the schools

and ensuring that no school is without a principal by March this year.

Die Burger reported last week that in the Eastern Cape there were about 700 vacant principal posts and at least 5 000 teaching posts that have not yet been filled.

Masualle said another focus would be the timeous appointment of qualified teachers in schools to ensure that there was always a teacher in front of the pupil.

In this regard, a team from the Office of the Premier and Treasury has been deployed for a year in the Department of Education to resolve that department’s human resource management challenges.

be rationalised and realigned into functional and productive schools and, through the new service delivery model, district offices will be reduced and capacitated to provide quality support to schools.”

There will also be a focus on improving the quality of primary education through a number of interventions, including training of teachers and use of ICT. “We are now placing a premium on teacher placement turnaround times and professional development,” the premier said.

The ANC Youth League welcomed Masualle’s plans for education.

Bay’s improved cash flow given thumbs-up NCEBA DLADLA THE NELSON Mandela Bay council tabled the adjustments budget of R160-million for consideration on Monday.

This would, among other developments, lead to the lifting of a moratorium on the filling of critical vacancies imposed by a council decision in June last year, said speaker Maria Hermans.

The adjustments budget for 2015/2016 noted that the cash position of the municipality had improved by R163.9-million from R1.19billion in the original 2015/16 budget to R1.36-billion in the consolidated adjustments budget which includes the municipal entity the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA).

This healthy state of affairs indicated that the metro was turning the corner, deputy mayor Bicks Ndoni said.

“The municipality’s healthy financial position received a major thumbs-up from all corners, including opposition parties, amid frank discussions on how to improve the overall performance of the institution at a joint sitting of the budget and treasury and mayoral committees today,” said Ndoni last Wednesday, adding that this called for maintenance and improved efforts to enforce strict cash-flow management and continuous monitoring.

Three M’well schools bag prizes REPORTER THREE Motherwell schools each won big cash prizes for the upgrade of their school in the Omo Spar Schools Challenge - a national competition.

Mdengentonga Primary, Empumalanga Primary and Fumisukoma Primary secured first, second and third places respectively for collecting the highest number of till slips in the Eastern Cape region. The top 150 schools with the highest number of entries each received mini portable science laboratories.

The OMO Spar Schools Challenge is an ongoing initiative by FMCG giant Unilever and 197 Spar stores countrywide to help promote child development and proficiency in maths and science. Additional cash prizes to the value of R1.3-million were also given away in the Schools Challenge.

The first, second and third schools in each region in South Africa with the most till slip collections over the period of the campaign each received cash prizes of R30 000, R20 000 and R10 000 respectively for use towards the upgrade of their school.

At a prize-giving event recently, Mdengentonga Primary School principal Mveleli Mbewu said, “The prize money will go towards the purchasing of new computers for the school. The adoption of technology is important and I want our learners to be computer-literate from the beginning.”

Participants in the challenge, who included parents, were encouraged to purchase an OMO product at any of the participating Spar outlets nationally during June, July and August last year, nominate a community primary school and put their till slips into an entry box provided at the participating Spar store.

Empumalanga Primary is one of three schools in the Eastern Cape which received cash prizes for taking part in the OMO Spar Schools Challenge. Shoes donated to Zanoxolo Primary children

NCEBA DLADLA WARD 56 councillor Unathi Menemene brought brand new shoes for seven needy children from Zanoxolo Primary School in Ndlovu Street, NU1 Motherwell, last Friday.

It was a moment of song and jubilation from the teachers and pupils, whose dignity as human beings and scholars was returned.

It had been proven that without school shoes, children’s self esteem went down, Deputy Principal Ntsikelelo Qwazi said.

Menemene said, “I visited the school during the few days of opening and noticed that some of the children had no school shoes. As the community leader, I made a vow to come back.

“I know I have not done enough as there are many children in need at the school. I wish others would follow suit.”

Menemene said unemployment and poverty were still the biggest problems facing Motherwell, and especially the NU1 community.

“We want to thank councillor Menemene for thinking about us,” Qwazi said.

“She left her office and decided to make a difference in the lives of these poor children.

“Hunger and starvation become so evident, especially in schoolchildren whose performance becomes adversely affected.”

He said that despite the feeding scheme provided by the Department of Education for its more than 1 000 children, his school was in dire need of extra assistance from good Samaritans like Menemene.

“I feel very good with school shoes. I’d like to say thank you to mama (Cllr Menemene),” said one of the recipients, Grade 5 pupil Anganathi Roro (10).

Sinabo Boyiya (9) who wants to become a teacher one day, said her parents were unemployed. “I am happy with new school shoes,” she said.

“We urge people to emulate what councillor Mememene has done,” Qwazi said. “We’d like to make our school a centre of excellence for the benefit of these pupils. We’d like to have computers on the top of our wish list.”

THIS year’s Motherwell Freedom Run, the sixth consecutive instalment of a 5km and 10km distance which takes place on 2 April, promises to be bigger and better.

This assurance was given by the event organiser Michael Mbambani during the launch held at NU2 stadium in Motherwell last week.

More than 1000 elite individuals were expected to take part in this year’s Freedom Run which stands out as one of the most fascinating and exciting events of the EPA calendar – for many reasons, Mbambani said, adding that the current 10km Champion Elroy Gallant has promised to come.

“The best in the business are coming down to PE for the event. We have also made the stakes high with R130 000 prize money which makes this one of the richest in the Eastern Cape,” said Mbambani.

The race carries participation league status, and is also part of the Legacy Project which is an integral part of the City of Champions.

For Nelson Mandela Bay, this race also boasts the support of the Motherwell Urban Renewal initiative.

However, according to City of Champions Mazizi Msutu, the most poignant facet of this event is the enormous pull of community spirit demonstrated by the local population.

A total of R130 000 makes this the richest 10km in the Eastern Cape, and the open category has up to 10th place.

Records will be broken and Mbambani said they would pay R10 000 more for record-breaking times.

The attendance lucky draw prizes are also in a league of their own.

There are two R5 000 and two R1 000 cash amounts up for grabs.

Addo Masters are SAFA NMB Masters Association League leaders SELBY MADIKANE ADDO Masters improved their chances of winning SAFA NMB Masters Association League title when they defeated New Brighton Masters 2-0 on Sunday.

Addo’s win made matters worse for Ama-Units who were leading last week.

Ayanda Zinganto and Simphiwe Bakajana registered some superb goals for the Addo side.

Ama-Units went down 2-0 to PE All Stars with Monde Tyaliti and Unathi Ndzandze scoring a goal each.

As it stands, Ama-Units have lost two games in succession and they dropped down to second spot of the log table.

Abahlobo shared a goalless draw with Valencia while Zwide Masters embarrassed Volkswagen Masters 4-1. Lungile Davashe, who was a hero, scored all Zwide Masters’ four goals and Siyabonga Makangela was VW Masters’ goal-scorer. To date Zwide Masters are fourth on the log standings.

Ntengento said that the parents of his club were lacking in their support and he was alone in this youth development.

“I am doing this development to create a crime free community. This club belongs to this community but I am worried because parents do not come on board. The field that we use for practices is filled with litter.

“Community members dump a lot of rubbish on to this field. I do not need money from the community but rather their involvement, which would be incredible for the club,” said Ntengento.

Ntengento thanked Nkululeko and the Canadians for making a change to his club, and he said his club would never forget what they did.

“This is history in the making for this community and the club. I look forward to working very hard with my boys. I want to thank Nkululeko and his Canadian friends for this all-important donation. The donation has lifted the spirit of the club,” said Ntengento.

YOUNG Rising Stars received a donation of kit from Canadians who visited the Nelson Mandela Bay recently.

Stars, which is a Zwide 4 Community Club, was founded by Luyanda Ntengento in 2013.

According to Ntengento, his friend Nkululeko Mayinje met the Canadians who were visiting Nelson Mandela Bay last month and they requested Mayinje to hand the kit over to the community builder who had a passion for football development.

Ntengento said, “My friend Nkululeko contacted me and told me that the tourists from Canada had kit that they wanted to donate for use by a less fortunate community club. Nkululeko informed the Canadians about me.

“The donation consists of three sets of kit, eight balls, 15 pairs of soccer boots, soccer boots for coaches, bibs and field markers. I am very overwhelmed by this gesture. It is going to take

PE’s Sithembele August challenges SA heavyweight champion Anton Nel NCEBA DLADLA FORMER Eastern Cape Heavyweight Champion Sithembele August (38) of Port Elizabeth will challenge South African Champion Anton Nel (47) for the title at Presley Restaurant in Boksburg, Johannesburg on Thursday evening.

This 12-round encounter, which has been on and off since March last year, will headline an interesting eight bout bill courtesy of Ring

of Steel Boxing Promotions headed by former pugilist Andre Thysse.

Thysse is reported in the media as saying he has big plans for Nel, who is believed to be the oldest registered Boxing South Africa (BSA) boxer ahead of his retirement to focus on training the youth.

Thysse said he had lined up a fight immediately after the one against August, because he did not think the Eastern Cape lad would pose any danger.

Nel has a professional record of 34 fights,

19 wins, 15 by way of Knock Out, 12 losses and three stalemates. In his last fight in August last year, he stopped East London’s Donovan Luff in eight rounds.

“We are excited that the fight is finally on after two contracts we signed since March last year. On two occasions we saw the fight cancelled in the eleventh hour.

“We are ready for Nel and promise to wrest the title away from him. His time is up,” said August’s mentor, Mzwandile Sidina, adding that Thysse was in for a big surprise against

Callies were dominating from the first whistle and the Walmer lads played entertaining football. Callies skipper Farouk Panky Abrahams’ name featured first on the scoresheet.

Callies came up strongly, and as a result they were rewarded with a goal thanks to Sheniel Ben 10 Benn.

The score was 3-0 after a spectacular goal scored by Gregory Damons. Callies increased the score to 4-0 when Benn came with his second goal in the last minute of the first half.

Things fell apart for Stars when Benn supplied a perfect pass to Abrahams who pulled a trigger that beat the visiting side’s goal stopper, with the scoreboard reflecting 5-0.

Abrahams scored his third goal after good play by Damons and Benn.

In the dying minutes of the game, Abrahams pulled his last goal that sank Stars in a 7-0 loss.

To the dismay of beautiful game supporters, the Ghetto Stars vs Callies and Royal Bucs vs Showvillage games did not take place because the match officials did not pitch up to do their duties.

The reason for the referees’ non-attendance was not known at time of going to print.

SAFA NMB Referees Appointments Officer Lindikhaya Bolo expressed his dissatisfaction about the match officials who failed to honour their duties. Bolo said, “Indeed it was a bad weekend for us. Referees did not pitch up for their appointments. I really do not think that the referees are bigger than the game”.

United piled the pressure on goalkeeper Daouda Diakite who was the busiest of the two goalkeepers from the start of the proceedings.

Dan “Dance” Malesela’s men were continually asking questions while Chippa’s Daniel Akpeyi was watching the game.

Chairman Sivuyile “Chippa” Mpengesi’s men scored the first goal through Mlambo in the first stanza and never looked back.

In the second half, they started from where they left off, keeping the fans on the edge of their seats until leading goal-scorer Nkosinathi Mthiyane scored the second of the match.

The final score was 2-0 but it could have been a higher score.

It was a good display from tactician Malesela, who is currently enjoying full-time em-

ployment as a Head Coach of Chippa United following the final settlement deal made with the previous coach Roger Sikhakhane early last week.

“Pity the crowds are not coming to the stadium the way we do in East London,” said one fan after the match.

Meanwhile, the Chilli Boys entertain Pretoria University this Saturday 27 February and Ajax Cape Town on Tuesday March 1, both matches away.
