Residents speak out at mayoral outreach NCEBA DLADLA RESIDENTS had a direct line to the metro’s executive mayor, Danny Jordaan, for their questions over service delivery issues during the mayoral outreach at the Nangoza Jebe Community Hall in New Brighton last Thursday. It followed a consultation with communities which Jordaan, his mayoral committee and directors had held at the Uitenhage Town Hall the day before. In New Brighton, residents heard the municipal senior officials explaining the road travelled and what still needed to be done in terms of service delivery programmes. Speaker Maria Hermans, who was the programme director, reminded the audience that they were reporting on the work of the municipality in the eight months that Jordaan had been at the helm.
Wards 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22 and 24, referred to as the Govan Mbeki cluster, heard executive directors reporting on ongoing expenditure in their wards, efforts to curb water leaks and fix potholes and specific economic development opportunities that existed and the review of high rates for public facilities. Chief financial officer Trevor Harper said the metro was in a good financial position despite the down-rating currently taking place in the country. Despite housing backlogs and rectification taking place in some of the wards, the metro said they still needed to improve the housing of elderly citizens and to continue improving infrastructure like the tarring of roads and fixing of potholes. Illegal dumping especially in New Brighton areas was highlighted, with residents urged to join the campaign “Yithande indawo yakho” launched by the mayor in Uitenhage and to
Treatment Aids Council to fight against poor health in KwaNobuhle NCEBA DLADLA THE problem of HIV/Aids and Tuberculosis (TB) infections that continued to affect poor residents of KwaNobuhle Township who are without proper care and medication, has led to the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) joining forces with local organisations to address this. TAC and other non-governmental organisations like Amadoda Okwenene, Section 27, Love Life and Phaphani Rape Crises had a meeting at Jeff Masemola Community hall last Thursday to sensitize one another about the challenges facing public health and what they could do to assist needy communities. According to this coalition, the challenges facing public health to stem mainly from poor management of resources and government’s budgetary constraints. “We have the problem of our clinics being without medication for sick patients including those who are HIV infected. There are no ARVs. There are no condoms available in our clinics while government preaches ABC to communities,” said Thembisile Nogampula of TAC. Nogampula said it was time for government to monitor the dispensing of medication if the shortage was as a result of the clinics’ poor handling of medication. “At Mabandla clinic, for instance, you’d still see long queues way after 2pm because of the shortage of staff. We want government to increase staff as their headcount is wrong,” he said. According to Section 27’s Fikile Boyce, their interaction as NGOs was aimed at creating
ways for their intervention to stop health problems from escalating into a crisis. “We’d also like this forum to collect information on emergency medical services in the light of the expected report on 2 April from the Department of Health in the Province.” Boyce said his coalition was not going to organise their own International TB Day programme on 24 March, but would rather be forming part of the campaigns organised by other organisations including Nelson Mandela Metro Municipality. “This is a very important gathering. It’s touching on the important issue of the accessibility of medication at this time of celebrating Human Rights,” said Sr Dineo Mokonenyane of the Metro Aids Council, adding that they were working together as government with the structures in the coalition, including TAC and Section 27. “Going forward we need an integrated approach so that we don’t work past each other,” she said, adding that declarations of the summit to be held must provide a corrective approach in the manner in which health problems were addressed. “Each organisation has a major role to play. We also have social problems to address,” said Mokonenyane. She added that there was a need for the coalition to speak about Orphaned and Vulnerable Children and how they accessed HIV treatment, child-headed homes and their need for social security, the elderly who have to look after their grandchildren after their children as well as other grandchildren died of HIV/Aids.
TAC members who attended the meeting at Jeff Masemola hall were, seated front from left, Tembisile Nogampula, Ntombi Ncwadi, Xoliswa Dyani, Nomakhosazana Letswalo, Emma Baleka, Pamela Baleka and Fikile Boyce. PHOTO:NCEBA DLADLA
show love to their place by keeping it clean. Residents were given a chance to make comments as well as ask questions. Ward 14 resident Xhanti Lamani asked whether it was not the time to bring back amabutho (regiments) of the 1980s to wage war against criminals who kept communities under siege. Phindiwe September of Ward 20 complained about street lights not working near KwaNdokwenza. “The second instalment of the mayoral outreach was full to capacity at Nangoza Jebe Hall in New Brighton. We are very happy – especially with the interactions,” municipal spokesman Kupido Baron said. Speaker Cllr Maria Hermans directing the programme at Nangoza Jebe Community Hall in New Brighton. TAC distributes condoms in fight against HIV NCEBA DLADLA IN an attempt to reduce the rate of HIV infection in KwaNobuhle, the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) in the area distributed 11 000 condoms to residents last Thursday. “We started at 9.30am and by 11am we had already given out 11 000 condoms.” TAC leader Thembisile Nogampula said, adding that they had given them out to young and old residents. Nogampula said they had to explain to residents that HIV/Aids was a threat to their health and life as a whole and until they took charge of their daily actions they were about to lose the fight against the virus. “Even the gogos took condoms for their grandchildren, saying they did not want to bury them because of their failure to do what is right, that is, follow the ABC,” Nogampula said. He said that some people, although they were not involved in sexual relationships,
had however taken the condoms “for just in case something unplanned happens”. “It is sad to say that even elderly women fear being attacked and raped by unknown assailants in their homes – so offering the rapist a condom in a hopeless situation could save a gogo from HIV infection.” The campaigns to create HIV awareness would continue unabated, Nogampula said. It was the TAC’s mandate to ensure that they assisted communities in the fight against the disease. Unemployment and alcohol abuse were still huge problems facing township communities, something which Nogampula said he believed put paid to attempts to decrease HIV infection. “We are also having a problem with the Department of Correctional Services, which releases inmates who are taking ARVs and TB treatment for instance, not communicating the person’s viral load and whether she or he has XDR, MDR or just pulmonary TB, which is normally treated in six months,” Nogampula said.
Police seek help from public after robbery NCEBA DLADLA THE police in KwaNobuhle arrested four suspects and seized an R5 rifle and a revolver, a white Isuzu bakkie and R145 000 worth of cigarettes an hour after the robbery of a truck on the N2 on March 3. Police spokesperson Sergeant Majola
Nkohli said PE police had received information and alerted surrounding police stations about the bakkie. Crime prevention unit members had then spotted the bakkie in Jabavu Road, KwaNo-buhle, with the four occupants, Nkohli said. “On seeing the police, the suspects start-
ed shooting and the police returned fire. Then the suspects, realising that they were cornered, ran away, leaving the bakkie in Mgolodela Street. The cigarettes were later recovered in a back-yard shack at a house in Mankayi Street, where one suspect, (30) was arrested for possession of stolen property.
The police have also opened a case of armed robbery and are looking for information that could assist in the arrest and conviction of the four suspects who escaped. “We urge members of the community to provide info that could lead to the arrest of the four suspects. Information will be treated with strict confidentiality,” Nkohli said.

Major boost for Ekuphumleni Old Age Home
Const. Mthini goes beyond the call of duty
INDABA REPORTER
NCEBA DLADLA
ENGEN Petroleum has donated R50 000 towards the renovation of the Ekuphumleni Old Age Home in Zwide. This initiative formed part of the company’s CSI “Festive Giving” campaign, which aimed to support and uplift the spirit of local communities. The company has supported the old age home for the past five years. The official opening ceremony of the renovated building on Saturday, February 20 was a bittersweet affair as the community reflected on a tragic fire last November which claimed the lives of three elderly residents. The fire destroyed a large part of the building.

Subsequently, the home has received a major facelift thanks to the South African Navy. Forty-eight Navy artisans, including plumbers, electricians and builders, assisted with the extensive revamp of the home. The Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Nosiviwe Maphisa-Nqakula and the Social Development MEC Nancy Sihlwayi handed over the newly revamped home. Special guests and dignitaries included premier Phumulo Masualle, mayor Danny Jordaan, the Secretary for Defence and military generals and the Military Council. Engen’s corporate social investment manager, Mntu Nduvane, said, “We were devastated when we heard about the fire and we hope our contribution demonstrates in some small way our commitment to uplifting the local community. “It is essential to restore and revive Ekuphumleni Old Age Home as it is the only facility catering for the aged community in the Nelson Mandela Metro township area.” Funds were raised as part of Engen’s employee community partnership programme, which encourages Engen employees to play a meaningful role in their communities. Tasneem Sulaiman-Bray, Engen corporate affairs general manager, said, “We wish the residents of Ekuphumleni Old Age Home all the very best in their new home. We sincerely hope it will impart a sense of dignity and renewed pride in the folk who reside there.”
CONSTABLE Sinethemba Mthini of the Crime Prevention Unit in New Brighton Port Elizabeth has made one resident very proud of the SA Police Service (SAPS) by literally giving her crutches to lean on. An off-duty Mthini was driving down Mavuso Street towards Kwazakhele Clinic when he saw a gogo who was struggling to walk and leaning on the shoulders of her daughter. “I am diabetic, suffering from high blood pressure and arthritis. I struggle to walk and (Constable) Mthini was so merciful. He stopped his car and offered to take us home,” said gogo Nozukile Mtyingiza. “I was amazed. First, I thought she was just tired and relaxing on the shoulders of her daughter but I realised that she couldn’t walk,” said Mthini. He offered to take them home to Kulati Street, and on their way there enquired what had happened. “The gogo told me she was coming from day hospital and that she couldn’t get crutches there. She was told she could only get them at Livingstone, but she had no way of getting there to collect them,” Mthini said. He then took it upon himself to organise crutches from people he knew once had them and in no time the gogo was able to Const Sinethemba Mthini and a delighted gogo Nozukile Mtyingiza (68) who can use the walk with crutches. KwaNobuhle woman doing well in medicine studies in Cuba NCEBA DLADLA SANDISWA Stuurman, one of the South African students learning medicine in Cuba, is about to finish her studies and come back to South Africa as a doctor. Currently in her sixth year of study, the daughter of Nozukile and Thobile Stuurman of KwaNobuhle has told her parents that she was doing well with her studies and that the next year would be her final one. “We are very happy to say our daughter is doing well in Cuba. She is a hard worker and that is showing in the way she passes her exams and does well in her practical work,” a proud Nozukile said of her fifth child, who passed matric in 2010 at VM Kwinana High School in KwaNobuhle. Sandiswa, who loves working with people, was introduced to medicine at high school and fell for it.
An opportunity arose to study in Cuba, thanks to the programme initiated by past presidents Nelson Mandela and Fidel Castro in 1996. Sandiswa jumped at the opportunity that would to save her pensioner parents from having to pay for her studies. Following reports earlier in the year that some of South African students in Cuba had turned away from their initial reason to be there and entered into a life of drugs and alcohol abuse, while some had started as pastors and abathandazeli (those who pray for others), Nozukile said she was sure that her child would not mess up the opportunity of a lifetime by engaging in something different from what she had set out to do in Cuba. “Sandiswa is focused and dedicated. Even her VM Kwinana teachers came to us when those reports started to come in, saying they knew Sandiswa wouldn’t be involved in anything untoward,” a proud Nozukile said.

Eric mentioned that he could not afford to repair his house because he was a pensioner. The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Rapid Response Task Team, coordinated by Zonile Ndoni, visited the elderly couple yesterday. “The Mayoral Outreach involves the mayor going out to different communities and engaging with ward clusters, giving the community a chance for questions,” Ndoni explained. He added that Edith raised concerns about structural defects and the mayor requested him to arrange urgently to visit the couple to see how they could resolve the couple’s plight. “We are going to compile a report and submit it to the Department of Human Settlements and they will take the necessary steps forward. I cannot give you a time frame but
things must be done immediately,” Ndoni said. “We also testify that this house has serious cracks on the wall. The building inspectors are on their way and they will assess and make the recommendations. They will let us know whether the house should be rebuilt or rectified.” Ndoni added, “This has nothing to do with voting, it’s a yearly thing. Every year, there is a mayoral outreach to engage with communities.” The building inspectors from the Department of Human Settlements inspected the elderly couple’s house yesterday and are still in the process of making a decision about how to proceed with fixing the couple’s house. Councillor Nondhiko Ellen Gana, who was present at yesterday’s meeting at the elderly couple’s house, said some of the main challenges in the area were housing rectification, roof leaks, geyser leaks, roads, and unemployment rates.

Walmer Township karate club needs support NCEBA DLADLA A LOVE of karate and children led Walmer Township’s Joshua Mzingelwa to start a club in the township.

Being without indoor sports facilities and resources, Mzingelwa, of the Airport Valley informal settlement, trains about 47 schoolchildren – aged seven to 16 – in the streets and parks, and has been able to produce national stars with trophies and medals to show for it. “I am passionate about karate, the sport I took part in while I was still at school,” said Mzingelwa, who decided to use his skills after watching many children loitering in the streets without anything to do after school. “The manner in which young children smoke and drink and, worse still, how they do drugs and crime, forced me to do something,” said Mzingelwa, a member of the street committee whose interests are community safety and security. have 47 excited participants, 12 of whom are now national champions,” said Mzingelwa, whose only child lives in the Transkei, where he comes from. To ensure that his players were recognised
and assisted with the latest sporting trends, rules and techniques, he had joined Sensei Zolile Maxhama’s Kyokushin Karate Club, which is affiliated to the national body. Mzingelwa, who now manages the Walmer club, said children from the townships are attracted to mainstream sports like football, rugby and netball, but not everybody is tailormade for those. He said karate had a special ingredient for self-defence and instilling discipline. “There are no yellow or red cards in karate,” he said, referring to soccer. Participants are taught discipline and that spills over into how they conduct themselves in their daily lives. Mzingelwa must take his participants to the national championships in East London from March 21 to 23. Winners will take part in an international tournament in the Free State, from which the road will lead to India for the world championships. He needs R3 000 for their transport and their participation fees. To assist Mzingelwa he can be contacted at 073 090 6299.

DR DIBA 073 4621 222
I got my first born at 14 years and got married twice with no kids, so I had to give up both marriages. I spent 21 years looking for another child, desperate to fall pregnant again, but all was in vain. I visited many doctors both medical and traditional but there was no sign - a lot of money was wasted & I nearly lost hope till I met Healer Diba in newspaper... He promised to make ends meet for me, he actually killed 3 birds with one stone. I am 40 years now, married again with twins. Thanks dr Diba for the help I received plus boosting our private business. NB: Healer Diba also solves court cases, relationship problems, divorce issues, lucky spells etc.
