Tech support for needy students REPORTER

“M

ANY of our students cannot afford their own devices or not always easily access computer facilities when off campus. With a growing emphasis on blended learning, we’re constantly seeking solutions in this regard.” This is according to Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s (NMMU) Chief Information Officer Dr Sam Bosire on the announcement that NMMU is opening a 24-hour computer laboratory on its Bird Street Campus. This will assist an increasing number of its students living in the metro’s Central area. NMMU also handed over 250 tablets to students this week, in line with the University’s commitment towards widening access in an ever-growing technological era. With 3 300 students living in accredited offcampus accommodation in Central and many others living in private facilities in the area, NMMU has introduced a dedicated lab with 43 computers in the Felsted Building on its Bird Street Campus. The 24-hour facility, which also makes provision for students with disabilities, will be manned by the University’s ICT Services.

The latter has made major strides in providing infrastructure to enable staff and students to keep up with the demands of a 21st century university by providing intercampus connectively, WiFi across all campuses with about 800 wireless access points, and in providing 3 700 PCs in computer labs. Once home to the University’s Business School, the historic Bird Street Campus is now a thriving arts and culture hub for postgraduate students and for music pupils. It is also home to the University’s own art gallery and an innovation hub for art students wishing to take their creations to market. The introduction of the computer lab will further enhance the vibrancy of the campus. According to Dr Bosire, all of NMMU’s campuses have their own laboratories. Given the increasing number of students living in the city’s historic heart, it was imperative to offer them a laboratory too – and save them the inconvenience of travelling to either North or South campuses. Similarly, and in line with the Bring Your Own Devices (BYOD) model, NMMU is to distribute 250 tablets to students according previously agreed-upon criteria. On average, over 11 000 devices at NMMU access the WiFi network during peak hours. Continued on page 2

Umhlali Project to curb lawlessness in Walmer/Gqeberha NCEBA DLADLA IN an attempt to curb lawlessness in Walmer/Gqeberha, Port Elizabeth, a community driven Umhlali Project was launched recently. Umhlali is an early crime and violence prevention strategy – an initiative by the Centre for Justice and Crime Prevention (CJCP), University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Gender, Health and Justice Research Unit (GHJRU), and Masifunde Learner Development (MLD) based at Walmer High School. .

According to Umhlali Project Coordinator, Tarryn Ramoo, the project was born out of research by the Cape Town based company which found gaps in certain services in the area. The official launch of the Umhlali project was held on 22 January at the Walmer High School library. It was attended by a number of stakeholders from the SA Police, Department of Social Development, members of the school governing body, the school management team and learners, Child Protection Organisations as well as some non-governmental organisa-

ernment came together to talk about how to take better care of our planet. These mitigation methods are being addressed by South Africa’s leading permaculture initiative, the EduPlant Programme. Severe weather, like that in late summer this year, can destroy crops and lead to hunger and famine. Schools that apply permaculture principles are better able to withstand such events and maintain food security, and help to prevent debilitating nutritional deficiencies such as kwashiorkor. The Woolworths Trust supports the EduPlant programme The winners of this year’s competition will also be able to send one teacher on a two-week course that will provide vital skills to build on their schools’ successes and enable them to cascade their skills to the surrounding community. Sixty finalist schools stand to win a total of R275 000 in cash prizes as well as tools and educational resources.

EDUPLANT has started the year with five one-day workshops in each province – 45 workshops that will reach thousands of people.

MEMBERS of the Port Elizabeth flying squad arrested a 47-year-old KwaZakhele man with a large quantity of Mandrax tablets with a street value of about R2-million last week. “On Monday evening, March 7, at about 9.30pm, constables Severiano Blundin and Siphulele Msindwana followed a green Ford Figo in Zwide,” police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said. The constables eventually stopped the vehicle and upon searching it they found 40 packets containing a total of 41 000 Mandrax tablets. The suspect was also in possession of a substantial amount of cash. “Members alleged that the suspect offered them a bribe of R100 000. He was detained on charges of bribery, dealing in and possession of drugs and is expected to appear in court soon.” The police had confiscated the vehicle, which had been rented, Naidu said. “Drugs and substance abuse contributes enormously to the commission of various

The Umhlali initiative is expected to run over a period of 5 years and is funded by the Human Dignity Foundation and Comic Relief. crimes, including serious and violent crimes. We urge residents to provide tip-offs to the police when they suspect the existence of drug hubs within their communities,” she said.

These fun edu-workshops aim to provide teachers and community members with tangible ways to support the estimated 40% of pupils who are undernourished and therefore unable to learn properly. For the pupils, teachers and community members who attend these workshops, poverty and unemployment are mitigated as they gain valuable skills that use local and available resources to transform dust bowls into food forests. All schools should enter the competition as they can win funding, training, planting resources and a chance to present the story of their food garden at the EduPlant Finals in Gauteng in October. This event is one week of edu-entertainment, with accommodation and travel all paid for. Entries close on May 31. THE Police in Uitenhage have warned residents to be on the alert against criminal elements who are out to victimise them. They have called on residents to join them in the fight against crime. “The SAPS needs your assistance to bring crime perpetrators to book,” police spokesperson Lieutenant Gerda Swart said. To ensure that residents are on the lookout, the following guidelines on observation techniques were provided. *Observe – but don’t make it obvious that you are observing the perpetrator/s.

*Focus on one person at a time and gain an overall impression of his or her height, build, weapon or firearm used, clothing, special features (birthmarks, a limp, etc.). *Look at detail: facial features (round/ sharp, eyes close-set/wide apart, etc.). * If a vehicle was used – look at the model, colour, make, registration number, etc. * Listen – remember names used by the suspects. *Remember what they touch, where they walk, body fluids deposited, any cigarette butts discarded. Remember never to risk your life or those of the persons around you to obtain information. Contact the local police station with any information pertaining to crime.

Roadworks continue in Port Elizabeth ROADWORKS will be taking place throughout this week within the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality area in the Eastern Cape. The South African National Roads Agency Ltd (SANRAL) would like to advise motorists of the following disruptions: • The construction of concrete lined drains will continue past the Bluewater Bay interchange in an easterly direction. There will be lane closures with a double lane being merged into a single traffic lane. Work is to

continue throughout the week. • The asphalt overlay works are to continue between Settlers and the Commercial interchange in both directions. There will be lane closures with the double lanes merged into a single traffic lane. “The University recognises the challenges faced by many students and is doing what it can to provide alternative mechanisms to bridge the digital divide,” said Dr Bosire. The new lab makes provision for students using their own mobile devices offering ample seating space, electrical points for charging purposes and free WiFi. A separate buzz room is available for students to do group work or enter into discussions so as not to disrupt the quiet laboratory space. According to a media statement issued by NMMU, the introduction of the new laboratory and distribution of tablets is part of a

bigger commitment to ensure that no academically deserving student is denied the opportunity of studying further. “This is also why NMMU introduced debtrelief and down-payment relief, and is one of the few universities to offer prospective students who fail to meet the criteria to study a particular programme, a second chance through its testing system. If students fall outside of the required Admission Point Score but fall within the testing band criteria, then they are invited to write a test to see if they have the potential to succeed in their chosen diploma or degree. Almost 40% of all graduates entered NMMU using this ‘second chance’ method,” the statement read.

Volunteer teacher sought for Dora Nginza REPORTER THE Dora Nginza Hospital is looking for a volunteer teacher to read stories for the inpatients. The person should be able to keep children entertained while they are receiving treatment at the hospital. Pamela Rubushe, Principal Medical social worker, said the children range from 3 to 12 years old. “These children come from various backgrounds and racial groups. A volunteer

who understands and speaks all three official languages would be an added advantage, but will be accepted even if she/he speaks only English and Afrikaans,” Rubushe said. “The most important thing is that the children have access to physical activity, playing, and some form of education, no matter how minimal.” The volunteer may start from April 1, 2016. Those who are interested may contact Matron Mancapha on 041 406 4319 or Pamela Rubushe on 041 406 4328.

National Water Week launched: ‘Water for people, Water by People’ THE Minister of Water and Sanitation, Nomvula Mokonyane, officially launched National Water Week on Sunday, March 13, at the Dan Qeqe Stadium in Zwide. National Water Week, held from March 14 to 22, under the theme ‘Water for People, Water by People’, serves as a campaign mechanism of the Department of Water and Sanitation.

As part of the launch of National Water Week, a national prayer for rain was held on Sunday, where various religious faiths were invited along with communities to dedicate a moment in prayer for rain, rehabilitation of our natural water sources and protection of water streams and rivers. Water Week is aimed at re-emphasizing

the importance of water, the scarcity of this resource and the need to manage this resource in a sustainable way that appreciates its role in eradicating poverty and under-development. ‘Water Week 2016’ is held as the country faces the most severe drought which has affected parts of our country, leaving many households without access to water

and causing devastation for crop producers and livestock farmers, in particular. As a result of the drought, many South Africans have come forth with various drought mitigation proposals and have begun to engage government on the need to partner in programmes aimed at conserving water and managing this scarce resource efficiently. – REPORTER

Local hairstylists in national talent search on SABC REPORTER THE nationwide Sofn’free search that started in 2015 is continuing to find the 2016 HairXperts Masters Challenge winner. Two of the fourteen stylists are finalists from the Eastern Cape. Abigail Mandula is

from Port Elizabeth, and Tshepo Lengane is from King William’s Town. Set to discover extraordinary talent in the South African black hair industry, the Sofn’free HairXperts Masters Challenge is open to stylists from all walks of life. This is the third year that the competition has been run, and this year, nearly 3 000 styl-

ists entered the preliminary stages around the country. A national panel of judges, headed by Disce Mamabolo, has combed through the finest hairstylists across the country, identifying just fourteen contestants to endure seven weeks of intense challenges in the Style-Off phase The fourteen stylists are representative of seven provinces, with contestants from as far afield as Bethlehem. Each stylist will be put through challenges to test his or her creativity and competence in creating edgy styles which involve analyzing, treating and styling the full spectrum of black hair, from natural to relaxed hair. Based on the results of each challenge, one

contestant will have to leave, as the final fourteen are whittled down to just seven. Mimmi Biggar, Technical Training Manager of Sofn’free Hair and Beauty Academy, said, “This competition will see the cream of the countries’ stylists battling it out for the Sofn’free HairXpert Masters 2016 title. We will be testing the stylists’ skillset and ability to cope under pressure. “The challenges set are no different from the type of situations they will encounter with their clients in their own salons. We are looking forward to the creative techniques they use to show just how talented they really are.” The show will air every Tuesday for seven weeks, with the first show which started March, 8 on SABC1 between 9pm and 10pm.

New jungle gym for Unathi Pre-school THE Unathi Pre-school, which has 57 young learners, mainly between the ages of two and five, recently received a brand new jungle gym through the generosity of the Rotary Club Uitenhage South and local good samaritans. The school is situated in the Gunguluzaville area of KwaNobuhle, and has two staff members and the principal, Cynthia Douw. The Rotary Club of Uitenhage South, who have had a long standing association with the pre-school, decided to assist in making school more enjoyable for the children and, after discussing the matter with the principal, it was decided to build a jungle gym.

The gym was donated to the club by Irene Asherton of Beachview. The donation was brokered by Mark Krebser of Windsor Forest Products. Marilyn Klassen, current President of the Rotary Club of Uitenhage South, was pleased the club had managed to improve the circumstances at the school. She said, “Children learn by using their senses and therefore children learn an enormous amount during play. The jungle gym will allow them to have fun and learn at the same time.” The Principal of Unathi, Cynthia Douw, in thanking everyone said, “We deeply appreciate what you are doing for our children and the community at large. You have done us proud and put back those smiles

on our kids’ faces. This has put our centre on a higher level. Thank you and may God bless you and shower you with more blessings.” The jungle gym was officially opened much to the delight of the preschoolers, when Irene, Marilyn and Cynthia together cut the ribbon so that the fun could begin.

March is World TB Awareness Month REPORTER

K_KNORROX_2054_PE EXPRESS INDABA_02_16

REPORTER

MARCH is marked as World Tuberculosis (TB) Awareness Month. With half a million new infections every year, TB is one of the leading causes of death in South Africa. High rates of HIV co-infection and increasingly drug-resistant strains mean the disease is showing no sign of abating. During a recent TB documentary launch held in Port Elizabeth, the Eastern Cape Department of Health’s tuberculosis hospitals said the Eastern Cape had one of the highest numbers of cases of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) in South Africa. The provincial manager for the Eastern Cape’s South African Red Cross Society, Ruth Mufalali-Van Rooyen, said Nelson Mandela Bay was one of the districts in the Eastern Cape that had a high number of TB cases. The other districts with high numbers of TB cases were OR Tambo District and Buffalo City. “The community as a whole needs to support patients with TB. “People without TB need to be educated on what TB is and how somebody can get infected with it, and also on infection control and prevention measures.” Mufalali-Van Rooyen added that TB patients also needed to understand TB infection control and prevention. “The South African Red Cross Society believes that TB is not an individual problem but that of the community and that is why our activities are driven to enhance community involvement,” she said. The Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) and partner organisations recently wrote to Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi, urging the rapid introduction of a new tuberculosis test in South African hospitals. TB is particularly difficult to diagnose in people living with HIV who have low immunity or who are seriously ill. The Lipoarabinomannan, or LAM test, works by detecting TB antigens associated with TB in a patient’s urine. The test is easy to implement and results are available in 25 minutes. At about R40 a test, it is also affordable. The letter follows the publication of findings in the medical journal the Lancet from a study that showed that use of the LAM test can reduce mortality in hospitalised people living with HIV who have low CD4 counts or who are seriously ill. More than 2000 study participants were randomly assigned to receive either normal TB testing or the normal tests plus the LAM test. After eight weeks 21% of the people in the LAM group had died compared with 25% of the people in the control group. This amounts to a relative risk reduction of 17%. Making the test available in South African hospitals will require healthcare workers to be trained on the LAM test and the development of guidelines for its use.

PE Opera House launches exciting programmes NCEBA DLADLA THE Port Elizabeth Opera House and the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality have launched a jobs incubator programme which seeks to give space to local artists to sharpen their skills in practising their craft at the Opera House. “Nelson Mandela Bay will never be the same again,” said PE Opera House general manager Monde Ngonyama. He said the creative genius of theatric icons

and pioneers of social cohesion like John Kani, Winston Ntshona and Athol Fugard, would be rekindled through a number of programmes that target school-going children as well as professional actors, singers and dancers. The Creative Economy Programme Investment Strategy, sponsored by the municipality and National Lotto, was accepted and endorsed by the Mandela Bay Arts Council especially for providing artists with year-round programmes and enabling resources. There will be a township dance development programme known as Dance Seasons for

schoolchildren. This R1-million programme, which starts next month, will culminate in the ensemble that will form the production Umlilo from which the Schools Festival Udumo Hi Dance Competition will be presented. Sundays will provide local music lovers with entertainment through the introduction of Jazz Sunday, which will include comedy for families. Mayor Danny Jordaan welcomed the programme and called on artists to attend the mayoral imbizos on the Integrated Development Plan so that they could speak about their

need for art centres in local communities. “We are happy we’ve finally agreed with the Nelson Mandela Bay Arts Council on the programme of action,” arts and culture executive director Noxolo Nqwazi said. She said artists had in the past come up with proposals without her office responding because they had been talking as individuals. “We are happy also as the municipality that we are able to respond to the artists’ needs by delivering a programme that supports the Opera House, because we cannot allow such an institution to collapse,” Nqwazi said.

I got my first born at 14 years and got married twice with no kids, so I had to give up both marriages. I spent 21 years looking for another child, desperate to fall pregnant again, but all was in vain. I visited many doctors both medical and traditional but there was no sign - a lot of money was wasted & I nearly lost hope till I met Healer Diba in newspaper... He promised to make ends meet for me, he actually killed 3 birds with one stone. I am 40 years now, married again with twins. Thanks dr Diba for the help I received plus boosting our private business. NB: Healer Diba also solves court cases, relationship problems, divorce issues, lucky spells etc.

Fighting Prince boxers represent province in national champs SELBY MADIKANE TWO boxers from Joe Slovo community club, Fighting Prince Boxing Club, will represent the Province of the Eastern Cape in the national championships that will be held in Cape Town from March 23 to 26. According to Fighting Prince Manager and trainer, Mphuthumi Makeleni, his two boxers Siphosethu ‘Small’ Matyholweni (48 kg) and Liyabona ‘Silence Killer’ Ngcivana (60kg) hail from the most disadvantaged backgrounds. Makeleni said, “These boxers have no means for the trip to Cape Town and our club has no financial muscle. Matyholweni is the neediest boxer because his grandmother who supported him passed on some time ago. “I have to dig deep into my pocket to support the boxers of the entire club that has more than 20 members. I am the breadwinner for my family and I do not have adequate means to run the club. “The two boxers are supposed to leave for East

London tomorrow (March 17) for the training camp in preparation for the national championships.” Makeleni said that Matyholweni, who is a KwaMagxaki High School learner, is the Eastern Cape champion and Ngcivana, of Ndzondelelo Senior Secondary School, is also a provincial champion. Makeleni said that his boxers were physically and mentally fit for the big event. “We have worked very hard and my boys are prepared to make history. These boys are the future professional champions because they take sport seriously.” Despite the lack of equipment and facilities in his club, Makeleni is committed to making a change in the Joe Slovo informal settlement. Makeleni stated that Fighting Prince BC have two old punch bags. They gym in a small zinc structure as they have no access to Joe Slovo Community Hall. Makeleni, who holds an International Amateur Boxing Association (IABA) Star One Coaching Certificate, can be contacted at 063 211 4359.

Okolo gives Mangcotywa a run for his money NCEBA DLADLA PORT Elizabeth’s Thembani “Pretty Master” Okolo fought the fight of his life against East London’s South African Miniflyweight champion Daluxolo Mangcotywa at the Orient Theatre in East London last Friday. Despite this, Mangcotywa was declared the victor by an unanimous points decision over 12 rounds, leaving boxing fans crying foul. “They claimed the young lad from Motherwell was given a raw deal,” said Okolo’s mentor Thando Twenani who believes his young cousin showed much more maturity than his mere 5-0 professional fight record ahead of the title fight suggested. Twenani told Express Indaba a boxing fan, whom they have not met before, asked for Oko-

lo’s bank account number after the fight and deposited R5 000 into the account, saying the boy should not be discouraged. “I’ve seen Bongani Siyo fight and I was impressed. That boy is something else. He has only 5 fights but has special talent. I can see talent. That boy is good!” said East London boxing fan Lonki Witbooi on his Facebook Page. Twenani said they worked very hard in the fight. “We even dropped the champion for a count in the third round. By the sixth, the fight was pretty clear which direction it was going. We were robbed,” said Twenani. According to Twenani, Okolo’s ring craft and prowess reigned supreme as he out-thought and outclassed his opponent who came into the ring with 16 fights, 12 wins (8K0s), 2 losses and 2 draws. Other fans wrote about the spectacular way in which a stylish Okolo goes to the ring

In only four fights, Okolo beat Lonwabo Roboshi who was coming from a loss against the same Mangcotywa in a fight for the then vacant SA title. Mangcotywa stopped Roboshi in 8-rounds. “We don’t know this Okolo except that he beat Roboshi. So they have one opponent in common,” said Mangcotywa’s mentor Dowie Mzini before the fight. “We asked for a return fight and they told us point blank that they were not interested,” said Twenani, adding that Okolo was going back to training and was hoping to get a fight on April 29 should Mangcotywa run away successfully. Twenani thanked Mzwandile Sidina and Ndumiso Fina who have been manning Okolo’s corner since his professional debut.
