Police were late yesterday afternoon still searching for the attackers who gunned down a suspect in a case of attempted murder while he was on his way to the Port Elizabeth Magistrates Court. Cheslyn Jaggers (40) was with three other people in a blue VW Golf in Govan Mbeki Avenue in the Port Elizabeth city centre yesterday morning when four people in a Mazda Etude fired shots at the Golf. The Golf came to a halt against a sidewalk at the corner of Darlington Road and Govan Mbeki Avenue. Jaggers died at the scene.

Bay Metro Police mocked A CARALEE DORFLING AND MORNÉ DU RANDT
LTHOUGH the Nelson Mandela Bay metro police was launched after great anticipation last Friday, the municipal workers union Samwu reckons it was all just an illusion. “The Nelson Mandela Bay metro police
are still just a name, and really just an idea that costs a lot of money and equipment, but is without a workforce,” said Mqondisi Nodongwe, regional secretary of Samwu, after the opening ceremony. On the sidelines, a woman in a traffic uniform was shouting, “The metro police are our future, but they (the metro management) must settle with us, and stand before us and say what the Metro Police entails!”

Nodongwe supported the woman’s outburst and said it was because so far there has been no communication between workers and management. “Our members (that include traffic officers and officers of the safety and security directorate) do not know what their new work entails. They were simply called last week and handed letters of transfer (to the metro police unit).”
He said that although to most the new jobs mean a higher rank and much better salary, all the posts are marked as acting positions. “Why would our members want to swap a permanent job for an acting job?

Bay Metro Police mocked Continued from page 1 “And it is no secret that there is no money or budget for operating costs of the metro police. How will our members’ salaries be paid? Will they all be fired from their new acting jobs when the money runs out?” asked Nodongwe. Another reason why some Samwu members are digging in their heels against the metro police, is that disputes over payments from their current positions have not yet been finalised. “No worker can be transferred to another structure while an investigation into payments and compensation is still pending,” said Nodongwe. He said the managers were given a deadline of June 13 to sort out disputes, before any negotiations for the
Metro Police could proceed. Danny Jordaan, executive mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay, gave the assurance at the launch ceremony that the Metro Police does not threaten current officials’ job security. “On the contrary, it will create opportunities for further education, employment and career development.” After the ceremony the metro said at a news conference that a workshop of two days and more than 12 consultation sessions with employees and their union representatives preceded the day. “We have an approved structure and graded posts. The implementation is done in stages and 78 officials have already accepted positions,” said Vuyo Zitumane, acting executive director of corporate services. Offices for the Metro Police are be-

ing set up in KwaNobuhle and Helenvale. Meanwhile, DA leader Mmusi Maimane also had much to say about the Metro Police during his brief visit to Port Elizabeth the past weekend. “Those officers do not seem even a little dangerous. They may want to start by paying a visit to the gym. “They seem just to have been asked over WhatsApp on the morning of the launch to pose as metro police officers,” said Maimane to about 50 people in the gang-ridden Helenvale. “No gangster or criminal will be afraid of any of the newly appointed NMB metro police officers,” said Maimane. He visited Davidene and Ricardo Ruiters, whose two-year-old daughter, Caydene, was shot dead in front of them in December. A stray bullet
from one of 11 shots that were fired in the street by suspected gang members, hit Caydene in the heart while she played in front of her home. Maimane wrapped his arms around the Ruiters couple and said that the Port Elizabeth Metro Police were supposed to be up and running in 2012. “But today, in 2016, blood is flowing daily, and the new Metro Police cannot stop the gangs from killing the Caydenes of the city.” He said as a parent he understood very well that something needed to be done in the northern suburbs of Port Elizabeth to combat gang crime. “It is time that the region produces more than gangsters. It is time for the potential of everyone who lives here to be developed and used to promote the area.”
Mmusi Maimane (right), DA leader, visited Ricardo and Davidene Ruiters, parents of Caydene Ruiters (2) who died after being hit by a stray bullet during alleged gang violence in Helenvale. Behind the couple is Caydene’s sister Tamlynn (15).
Suspect gunned down on way to court Continued from page 1 Two other people in the car suffered gunshot wounds. Police have not released their names. “The four people in the Etude sped off. The gang task force is currently investigating,” Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, a police spokesperson, said. According to a police officer at the scene it would appear that Jaggers was the target of the shooting. He was hit eight times while another passenger was not hit once. At least 12 bullet holes were visible in the Golf’s windows, but Janse van Rensburg did not disclose the specific number of shots fired. “I can at this stage confirm that Jaggers was en route to the magistrate’s court, where he would have appeared on a charge of attempted murder,” Janse van Rensburg said.

Minister of Social Development visits KwaNobuhle today NCEBA DLADLA THE Minister of Social Development, Bathabile Dlamini will be at Jabavu stadium, Kwa-Nobuhle, Uitenhage today, Wednesday 18 May. The Minister’s visit in conjunction with South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) officials follows shortly after a visit in Motherwell, Port Elizabeth, on Saturday, May 14. It is aimed at identifying opportu-
nities for the establishment of community based cooperatives. The Minister said Cooperatives were a viable alternative to fight unemployment and poverty. Nelson Mandela Bay Ward 60 Nondikho Gana of Wells Estate said, starting from Tuesday last week, the minister and her entourage started profiling households and engaging with the women in business as well as those in cooperatives to encourage them to continue with the cooperatives as they
helped to provide food for families. Dlamini, who is also ANC Women’s League president, said Cooperatives must be strengthened for poverty alleviation. Tabling her Department’s budget vote to the National Council Of Provinces (NCOP) last week, Minister Dlamini said: “The department has created a network of 166 Community Nutrition and Development Centres in targeted poor communities affected by high levels of food insecurity and malnutrition. In re-
turn, these centres have created over 600 jobs. We will increase these centres to at least 200 in this financial year.” In line with government’s pronouncement on preferential procurement, the Department has introduced programmes to plug the outflow of resources including social assistance out of poor communities. The Minister will also use the community engagement to raise awareness of and discourage the
prevalence of gender based violence, which is said to be high in KwaNobu-hle. In the fight against gender based violence, the department established a 24-hour Gender Based Violence Command Centre dedicated to providing support and counselling to victims of gender based violence, the Minister said. As she did in Motherwell, the minister will give the elderly women (from 1914) blankets as gifts in order to use against winter cold.
Flying Squad catches suspects after attempted car hijacking NCEBA DLADLA TWO suspects, aged 26 and 28, were arrested in Gelvandale at the weekend by members of the Flying Squad after an attempted hi-jacking. Police spokesperson Priscilla Naidu said that at about 7.10am on Sun-
day, information had been received of an attempted hijacking in the Gelvandale area. The description of the vehicle had been circulated and within minutes Flying Squad members had spotted it speeding in Standford Road, she said. “A chase ensued as the blue VW
Polo attempted to evade the police, but the police succeeded in bringing the vehicle to a halt.” Upon searching the vehicle, the police found a Pietro Beretta 9mm pistol hidden under the driver’s seat. The suspects were arrested on a charge of the illegal possession of a firearm.
They are expected to appear in court soon, Naidu said. She added that the police were concerned abut the use of firearms in many serious and violent crimes in the Northern Areas. “Gang-related violence, drug trafficking, aggravated robbery, domestic violence and rapes are mostly car-

Nene, the darling of diehard boxing fans who used to carry him aloft to the ring as they sang (amagwatyu) war songs to spur their hero on, will appreciate the fact that their hero will be in the ring as well – against one of his past opponents from Dimbaza near King Williams’ Town, Wele Maqolo. But it will only be for entertainment, this time around.

Critically ill children given wings to fly NCEBA DLADLA LULUTHO Kwanini (10) of KwaNobuhle in Uitenhage was born with a damaged liver and needed a transplant at a Cape Town hospital to stay alive. Thanks to Wings and Wishes, a non-profit-making organisation (NPO) in Port Elizabeth, Lulutho is alive, going to school and like many children, dreams of becoming a doctor one day. Lulutho’s unemployed mother, Buyelwa (42), shared with Express how she had struggled seeing her baby girl grow with the disease without hope of ever getting her healed, until Wings and Wishes came to the fore. “Lulutho was a sickly baby from birth. The doctors, however, did not find the reason for her sickness until around May in 2012, when it was found she had a cyst on her liver,” Buyelwa said. “Seven days after her birth I took her to the doctor because of a “yellowness” and I was told to expose
her to the sun in order for the yellow to vanish. It did not,” Buyelwa said. The child later developed a rash and blisters which continued until she was about to start school. “Her Grade 2 teachers advised that I take her to the doctor,” she said. She took the child to the Dora Nginza and Livingstone hospitals but the child’s health did not improve. “She was admitted for something like four months at Dora Nginza Hospital, where the diagnosis of a problem with her liver was made and the first operation done,” said Buyelwa. The doctors then booked a bed at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town and the child had to wait until a donor was found. “Our biggest worry was how to get transport to and accommodation in Cape Town,” said Buyelwa, who thanked Wings and Wishes for coming to her rescue and fulfilling her wishes. Lulutho underwent the transplant in July last year.
Wings and Wishes is an organisation dedicated to transporting critically ill children from poverty stricken families to receive life-saving medical treatment. The NPO has been of assistance to a number of children from birth to 18 years of age for almost 10 years now. “Every day, children are diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses,” said Wings and Wishes Manager Inge Human. “Help is often available at specialised government hospitals, but for many children the treatment they so desperately need is out of reach because transport is either not affordable or not readily available.” In June Lulutho will be taken back to Cape Town for observation.

Westering High School again delivers splendid Voce Volante Choir Festival NCEBA DLADLA WESTERING High School held a successful Voce Volante Choir Festival at the Feather Market Centre in Port Elizabeth on Saturday, May 7. The annual festival, regarded as one of the biggest events on the Bay’s choral music calendar, is a golden opportunity for young choristers to showcase their talents to very supportive audiences. The Voce Volante Festival is not a competitive event. It gives newly formed and existing choirs an opportunity to perform before an audience. According to Westering High School’s Choir conductor, Amanda Engelbrecht, the first concert concentrated on primary schools and featured the Eastern Cape Junior Children’s Choir, the EC Children’s Choir, the Northern Areas School
Choir Organisation (Nasco), Summerwood Primary’s junior and senior choirs, the Westering Primary School choir and the hosts, Westering High School’s choir. She said this year’s brand new inclusions on the programme had been the choirs from the Astra and Arcadia Primary Schools which were being developed by Nasco. High schools included the Westering High Choir, Westering High Treble Tonez and the Eastern Cape Youth Choir. New on the programme were choirs from Victoria Park and Muir College. The Muir College and Westering High choirs were finalists in the ATKV Applous Competition 2015. A firm favourite on the programme was the NMMU Choir, which once again received a well-deserved standing ovation. Engelbrecht said, “Owing to the high demand for a platform
to perform, the festival also featured some smaller choirs and ensembles made up of scholars, as well as mixed ensembles ranging from scholars, students and teachers to a male quartet.” The new performers at Voce Volante 2016 included The Creed, Largo, Hemiola and Bluewater Bay Christian School’s God’s Instruments. Engelbrecht said this year’s festival had once again been a resounding success and that participating choirs were extremely keen to return to the Voce stage in 2017. The audiences were very generous with their positive comments and praise for the concerts. “A well organised and most enjoyable event,” was the catchphrase of the day. Both concerts culminated in mass choir performances, displaying a multitude of talents together on one stage.
Now led by multiple award-winning hip-hop artist Makhi Fibi, alias Yakeem Ben Israel of Motherwell, as Urban Exchange, the movement is still highly regarded in grooming and exposing local artists to national stardom. Urban Connection came about 12 years ago, during a time regarded as the golden era of Rhythm and Poetry (RAP) and Hip-Hop in Nelson Mandela Bay. “Urban Connection lived up to its name as it broke the barriers and connected youth from previously disadvantaged areas, rural youth and those from the urban areas,” said Fibi, who is the creative director. He said the likes of Freshlyground songstress Zolani Mahola, MXO, Dangatye, Abantu, Peebles, the late DJ Miles, J Bux , Lelethu “Poetic Soul” Mahambehlala, and radio disk jockeys Slyso Saliso of Umhlobo Wenene FM, Mio and Queen Kondleka as well as the late Mr Bozak (all from Algoa FM) had set the tone and given hip-hop an identity that still endured a decade later. According to Fibi, the young firebrands of music innovation were to give birth to an offshoot of mixed emotions and experiences from different scenarios in a cocktail of expressions. “Seeing that we could never recreate the spirit of Urban Connection because of its organic energy, we decided to form Urban Exchange as an exchange of ideas of different genres on different platforms,” he said. Now based at Studio 33 in Chapel Street, Central, they invited Golden Shovel, a hip-hop artist from Johannesburg, with Gino, Azi, Nqontsonqa, DJs Subs, Adon, and Cush Solomon as well as Qimrolo, who won the right to perform in the competition run by Urban Exchange.
“What set this platform apart was the sincerity of the artists, the hunger, passion and unmatched drive to create art that spoke and displayed a variety of paradigmshifting concepts,” a proud Fibi said. He said that the movement was still an inspiration and a talking point for many creatives in the Eastern Cape. “We saw a sturdy growth at last weekend’s performances, with artists showing a great respect for diversity and towards one another.

REPORTER A GROUP of 13 pupils from Walmer Township attended the “Enke Trailblazers” celebration ceremony in Cape Town, where they received certificates in recognition of their community development projects. The event took place at the Ikamva Youth Organization Offices recently. The “Enke Trailblazers” programme focuses on the self-development of children and youth from disadvantaged communities in South Africa and encourages them to be active citizens of society. The chosen participants of the programme meet in Cape Town, Bloemfontein or Johannesburg where they share their different project ideas and suggestions on how to uplift their communities. In June 2015, the 13 pupils from Walmer, who are all involved in the programme of the local NGO Masifunde Learner Devel-
opment, were selected to take part in the programme. Within the following nine months, they developed and implemented their own projects within their communities, e.g. a chess club, a sports day and a toy collecting project for pre-school kids. During their four-day stay in Cape Town the pupils received the opportunity to attend a lot of free-time activities such as a tour to Robben Island. They also got the chance to visit the parliament of South Africa, a trip which was organized by Andrew Whitfield from Port Elizabeth. “I’m very proud to be part of the Enke Trailblazers programme. It is a great opportunity to connect and make new friends because in the end, we all do have the same goal: to be future leaders of our communities. The trip to Cape Town was a great chance and an unforgettable experience for us,” said Sakhile Lose, Masifunde programme participant and Grade 12 pupil at Walmer High School.

Successful tourney against under-age drinking NCEBA DLADLA THE Eastern Cape Liquor Board in conjunction with the Department of Education and Shoprite/Checkers hosted a very successful sports tournament themed: “Booze is not for learners” at the Coselelani High School grounds in Motherwell. “We have identified that liquor is the root
cause of many problems schoolgoing children find themselves facing,” Coselelani High School principal Langa Tshangana said. “This results in poor school attendance, late-coming and failure to maximise their potential”. During the tournament boys’ and girls’ football was played, as well as netball. Teams from 15 Motherwell, Zwide and Kwa-

Nevertheless, we will do an impact assessment to see if it really made a difference among pupils.” Correctional Services Department reinte-

Masiphathisane win their two games SELBY MADIKANE MASIPHATHISANE High School won their two games during the Motherwell High Schools MURP Rugby League tournament at Motherwell NU 1 Rugby Stadium last week Wednesday. Masiphathisane High supporters became ecstatic when their school team earned a hard-fought 19-15 victory after their gallant opponents Douglas Mbopa High School took the game to them in their second tough clash. Following their loss to Masiphathisane High School, Douglas gave a good account of themselves in their 7-0 defeat to James JR Jolobe High School. The game between Coseleni High School and Vulumzi High School that ended in a 3-3 draw, produced some fireworks. Despite their 10-0 loss; Motherwell High gave James JR Jolobe a run for their money. The fans thought that Vulumzi High was going to blow the competition away against Mfesane High, but the final score was 15-5 in Vulumzi High’s favour.

VW’s 5km Fun Run aims to build spirit of camaraderie NCEBA DLADLA THE VW Annual 5km Fun Run will be taking place this Saturday, 21 May starting at 7am. Although the event is aimed at building camaraderie among employees and management at the motor manufacturer, the public is also invited to participate in the event. According to Volkswagen (VW) AutoPavilion and PeoplePavilion officials, the event, which is hosted by the Volkswagen PeoplePavillion, is a unique race that takes place through the manufacturing factory. It is hailed for developing trust among employees and management as it promotes the spirit of camaraderie in the workplace. The official said it is, however, also open to the public, both young and old, for exercise. Registration can still be done at the Peoples-
Pavilion, VW in Uitenhage until Saturday at 6:45am. “The fun run is unique, because it is the only one in the country with a route that runs through a manufacturing factory and this makes it more exciting and fun,” said the official. He added that whilst this race helped to strengthen relations between management and employees, it also opened doors to members of the community who were interested in participating for healthy and positive living. “Through this race, a very strong team culture is built,” the official said, adding that it also showed the trust and respect that VWSA had for its employees and the community by allowing them to run through its factory. Last year’s winner in the men’s category was Zolani Ngqaqa, while Lusapho April came second and Andre Ketchem, third.

Big boxing bonanza at Nangoza Jebe on May 29 NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay Boxing Promoters are doing it again. After a successful boxing tournament brought together by Metro boxing promoters which saw a Miniflyweight World Boxing Federation (WBF) International title won by Siphosethu “The Gift” Ncisane in December, two of the Bay’s boxers will be squaring off against outside opposition for the same WBF titles at Nangoza Jebe Hall on 29 May. In the main bout, highly rated South African Welterweight contender Anelisa “Sugar
Ray” Gungqisa of Walmer, Port Elizabeth will meet Eastern Cape Welterweight kingpin Mziwoxolo Ndwayana of Grahamstown over 12 rounds for the vacant WBF International Welterweight title. Gungqisa and Ndwayana are currently the two hottest properties in the Eastern Cape in the Welterweight division. The bout is expected to provide fireworks. A win for Gungqisa would open an opportunity for a rematch with current SA champion Shaun Ness of Gauteng while Ndwayana will jump at the opportunity to challenge Ness for the title in the ring. Both camps are hoping for a knockout win.
The main supporting bout, also over 12 rounds, is a bout for the vacant WBF Africa Flyweight title fight between KwaNobuhle’s Siyabonga Blaauw and East London’s former SA Flyweight champion Xola Sifama. The two bouts were sanctioned and will be supervised by the WBF president Howard Goldberg. The rest were sanctioned and will be supervised by Boxing South Africa (BSA) Nelson Mandela Bay service provider, Mthunzi Mapitiza. The main preliminary bout over 10 rounds, is a grudge return fight, this time for the South African Female Junior Lightweight title between the defending champi-
on Nomampondomise Xotyeni of KwaNobuhle and challenger Nozipho Bell of Walmer Township. Other fights, all over six rounds, will be: Asanda Jacobs of KwaNobuhle versus Masixole Mabhuntsana (eZinyoka) in the Junior Lightweight division; Simo Mbande versus Xolisa Kana (both KwaNobuhle) in the Junior Featherweight division; Thembani Okolo (Motherwell) versus Ayanda Dlulani (Peddie) in the Miniflyweight division and Bulelani Jacobs (KwaLanga) versus Mziyanda Links (KwaNobuhle). The first bout starts at 2pm and admission is R100.
Amakhosi draw 1-1 with Amabhakabhaka SELBY MADIKANE MAJOR Chiefs held Zwide Pirates to a 1-1 draw in their tough Zwide Football Association (ZWIFA) Ntando Tours and Transport Premier Leaguegame at Gal City Grounds on Sunday. Pirates came strongly to the reigning league champions. Within 10 minutes Amabhakabhaka registered their opening goal on the scoreboard after Mpumelelo Nkwara Manqashela was rewarded with a brilliant goal. After that it was, however, error after error as both sides failed to make their opportunities count. Amakhosi were desperate for an equaliser. The men in gold and black kept on pursuing the goal but it became a daunting task.
The long awaited goal that was scored by Sivuyile Goba gave life to the Amakhosi side that had been working hard. Then the game turned dramatic as a Chiefs’ player and two Pirates’ players were shown red cards for rough play. Gal City caused a major upset when they beat Real Crusaders 2-1. Camper United proved that the game is won on the field of play as they embarrassed the most feared side Shining Stars 4-1. Golden Aces secured a convincing 10-0 victory over Morning Stars. Young Killers played to a 2-2 draw against Sophakama. Express, who came to the game in the right frame of mind, did not change their Head Coach Mondli Nyosi’s game plan following Stars’ goal. Kuhle Dyobi replied with the equalising goal for the KwaZakhele side. Callies bagged the SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay SAB Regional League title a week ago. Head Coach Monier Saferdien said that the road thus far had been a long and winding one. Saferdien said, “We are the champions but it was not easy to accomplish our goal. Our side played as a unit. It was not easy because Hotspurs were hot on our heels. Fairview Rovers and NMMU Madibaz were also tough opponents. Callies skipper Farouk Abrahams was the most influential player who played a crucial role in his side’s success. Abrahams together with Sheniel Benn, Bulumko Ceki, Fahid Dolley, goalkeeper Xolani Myataza and Quade Heywood played the
most tremendous role during the 2015/2016 SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay SAB Regional League Season. On the other hand Hotspurs fought until the last game because they depended on Showvillage United to beat Callies but it was in vain. Fairview Rovers and NMMU Madibaz gave a good account of themselves as they finished in the top four teams. Two teams that were promoted together, namely Ghetto Stars from WAFA and Ikamva Movers from MOFA, had a torrid time in the 2015/2016 SAFA NMB SAB Regional League Season; as such they join Island City (LAROFA) and Imbabala Young Stars who will campaign in their Local Football Associations in the next season. Callies striker Sheniel Benn played a tremen dous role in his side’s successful 2015/2016 SAFA NMB SAB Regional League Season.
