HALLENGES around access for emergency services, SAPS vehicles and wheelchair-bound people in the former IBhayi area (New Brighton, KwaZa-khele, Zwide, Veeplaas and Soweto-onSea) will soon be a thing of the past, after the R100 million investment by the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality in the tarring of roads, paving of sidewalks and improvements to the stormwater drainage system in these areas. Nomfundo Ngcingane (56), who lives in Tsewu Street in New Brighton, could not hide her excitement about the improvements being effected in her street, which is one of the streets under reconstruction. “This reconstruction of our street will
change the picture of this area. It will not only improve access, but it will also add to the value of our properties. “Raining or not, we will be able to walk freely in a paved street. We used to experience a lot of flooding when heavy rains came. We have been told that stormwater drainage will also form part of the work that will be done. Thank you to the Municipality,” said Ngcingane. Another resident of New Brighton, Lindile Kinzela, who also benefited from the project through employment, confirmed that the project was a boost for him and his family. “Our street will not only be reconstructed but for the duration of the project I will be able to provide for my family,” said Lindile Kinzela. Kinzela added that the improved roads would aid many aspects of service delivery. “When we have good roads,we talk about
easy access for physically challenged and wheelchair-bound residents; we talk about easy and quick access for emergency vehicles like ambulances and fire trucks to our area; and we also talk about easy and quick access for police when they attend to criminal incidents that might endanger people’s lives,” said Kinzela. The project is currently in progress in different areas and in different phases, not only benefiting the residents of these areas, but also empowering emerging businesses (SMMEs), which are an integral part of the delivery of this project. An SMME owner, Lumnka Speelman (41), who co-owns Speelman Mtika Construction Company, is one of those who have benefited as a sub-contractor from one of the road construction projects in Kwazakhele Seyisi, in an
area called Maqanda. “It was the first project I ever received from the municipality. This opportunity has given me a lot of experience, more especially as a female construction company owner. We used to be ignored in the construction industry, but things have now improved. This project will not only benefit my company financially, but the experience I will obtain will position my company better to bid for more projects, bigger than this one,” said Speelman. More than 50 kilometers of road construction will be done in the area. The work that will be done, will include informal settlement areas like Qaqawuli and MK Silvertown. Work to be done in informal areas like these will be in preparation for the formal housing construction that will be undertaken later this year.

Deputy Minister in Mandela Bay for handover of sports facility NCEBA DLADLA
Lebohang Ntengento (left) (11) and Mhlangovuyo Ralo (10) enjoy exercise at the outside gym.
SPORTS and Recreation Deputy Minister Gert Oosthuizen was in Nelson Mandela Bay last Thursday to hand over sport facilities and equipment. “I am here to hand over a gymnasium facility to the people of KwaNobuhle in line with the Department of Sport and Recreation's vision of rolling out sports facilities throughout the country in order to unearth talent,” said Oosthuizen during the official handover of the outside gym built in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage for the benefit of the local community. Oosthuizen said the aim of his Department was to identify immense sporting talent among the children of South Africa. “We are executing the mandate given to us as the Department to unearth and develop our children’s talent in order to produce great rugby, cricket and football stars,” he said, adding that he was excited by the enthusiasm he saw in KwaNobuhle and hoped that the community would look after the facility. According to Oosthuizen, his department delivered a gymnasium in each province once a year. Some provinces get two, he said. Nelson Mandela Bay was, however, lucky as apart from the gymnasium in KwaNobuhle, the people of Zwide and Walmer townships were also the beneficiaries of similar facilities. An elated Ward 44 Councillor Nomsa Booi thanked national government for the facility that will benefit more wards than just her own. “All nearby Wards will benefit from this outside facility which we’ll use early in the morning everyday for good health. Our responsibility now, as local government, is to ensure that we fence it,” said Cllr Booi, who also urged members of the community to jealously look
after the facility. Love-Life Centre Project Manager Themba “TK” Maseti said the handover came at the right time as they were celebrating 40 years of the 1976 Youth Uprising in Ward 44. “On Monday we had a debate, on Tuesday it was a Career Day led by institutions like NMMU, Midlands College, MSC and EMC, yesterday was a move for health where we had a walk targeting both young and old and today (Thursday) we are here for the launch of this facility which will surely benefit young and old people.

PAC reveals Khosi Maqetuka as Mayoral Candidate PAN Africanist Congress (PAC) of Azania will be fielding Nomakhosazana Maqetuka, of Zwide, as the Nelson Mandela Bay Mayoral Candidate in the upcoming local government elections scheduled to take place on August 3. The PAC made this announcement during the party’s Manifesto Launch held at Cecil Kapi aka eHoza in New Brighton last Friday. PAC president Luthando Mbinda, the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) including secretary Khwezi Dalisile were among those present. Speaking to the media, Maqetuka said the PAC would be contesting Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality Mayoral position and at least 43 Wards. She joined other parties in the metro municipality on Sunday to sign an Election Code of Conduct with the Independent Electoral Commission. According to Maqetuka, who is popularly known as Sis Khosi, the trust of the PAC was in the dejected electorate who have been left in the lurch by the ruling ANC and needed change in administration from a party which, like the ANC, was in the trenches. “This is over and above our card-carrying members, supporters and sympathisers,” she said. About the manifesto she said, “When leading in council, we’ll do a skills audit of the municipal officials to check whether they all are qualified for the jobs they do. This we call cleaning the administration. Maqetuka said the PAC would unashamedly prioritise the needs of the disadvantaged communities. “Because joblessness is a huge problem facing this municipality. We’ll have a database of the unemployed with their skills-base from each and every Voting District and Ward.” Maqetuka said the PAC in government would look at the 2016/2017 IDP budget to see if the allocation of projects was really intended to address genuine community needs and not aimed at benefiting a few individuals with business connections. While creating employment opportunities was paramount on the PAC agenda, Maqetuka said they opted for self realisation, which meant that people should be encouraged and assisted to start their own businesses. “Government, and in this case, the municipality, must create an enabling environment for people with entrepreneurial spirit to thrive,” she said. A mother of three, who buried her first born child last year, Maqetuka is no political midget. She grew up in the party since the days of the1976 Uprising when she was an activist as a student at St Mathews Teachers’ College. – NCEBA DLADLA

ADVERTORIAL: EDUPLANET
Private school EduPlanet opening soon in PE REPORTER
REPORTER ABOUT 250 grade 11 and 12 learners from Nelson Mandela Bay and surrounding areas will be exposed to the various fields of science at this year’s Science Discovery Week at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) from June 27 to July 1.
EDUPLANET is launching a unique, independent school in July. The school will be registered with the Eastern Cape Department of Education and will occupy the Eveready offices at 1 Eveready Road, Struandale (next to Continental Tyres). Charl Meyer, the director of the school, had a proven track record in private schools since 1991, when he launched Meridian College in Pretoria (currently owned by Curro) and subsequently other schools throughout the northern provinces. After an extensive search throughout the urban areas of PE, this building was selected because of its layout, location and 24/7 manned security and access control. According to Meyer, the school will aspire to instil strong moral values based on Christian principles, combined with clear, healthy discipline. “The dire situation in some of the local schools created the need for normalised, high-quality education, which we provide,” said Meyer. “At EduPlanet we employ dedicated, well-trained and experienced staff to help learners get to an acceptable level and then maximise their potential. The classes will be limited in size, ensuring individual attention,” said Meyer. According to Meyer, a very high premium is placed on English in spoken and written form. “We want our learners to be confident and competitive and able to excel in life beyond EduPlanet. Parents are encouraged to get involved in their child’s progress by regular and constant communication with the teachers,” he said.
NMMU hosts Science Discovery Week for Bay learners
Faculty of Science Public Relations intern Nolusindiso Hleko said the purpose of Science Discovery Week is to introduce learners to the fascinating fields of science in a fun and informal setting. The event is run annually by NMMU. “One of the major benefits for learners is getting exposed to the different science fields before they apply for tertiary education. “It is an opportunity for them to get more information to make a more informed decision when choosing a science course to study – because they will at least have a clear idea of what the course entails.” Daily activities for the learners will include visits to the various science faculty depart-
ments where they will participate in subjectspecific experiments. Activities will take place in the following Science Departments: Biochemistry & Microbiology, Chemistry, Mathematics & Applied Mathematics, Physics, Computing Sciences, Statistics, Botany, Zoology, and Geosciences. “Discovery Week also provides an opportunity for learners to be actively involved in performing experiments while gaining more knowledge on science. “This opportunity will be beneficial particularly to those learners who go to schools that don’t have science labs in which to perform experiments, therefore having to base their science knowledge solely on theory.” Science Discovery Week proves highly informative for learners considering a degree or diploma in science. Additional information on bursaries and how to apply to NMMU will also be shared. • The Science Discovery Week will take place at the Life Sciences Building (Building 127) on NMMU’s South Campus.
Charl Meyer, director of EduPlanet. A high academic standard can only be achieved and maintained by constant evaluation and progress. Bushes pose safety threat in Fairview NCEBA DLADLA SOME Nelson Mandela Bay Ward 6 residents from Fairview in Port Elizabeth rue the day they bought plots in this area. They complain that the area is full of bushes that have become a danger to their safety. They claim to have reported the matter to the Port Elizabeth Land Restitution and Housing Association (PELRHA), Ward 6 Councillor Retief Odendaal and Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality officials, to no avail. “The bushes around our houses are becoming bigger by the day and that is putting our lives in danger,” said Mzwandile Ndimba, a resident. According to Ndimba, as a result of this they are faced with break-ins almost every day. He fears that their lives, including those of their wives and children, are not safe, he said. According to Ndimba, PELRHA used to cut the grass and the bushes for them but refused to do so lately claiming that it was the responsibility of the municipality to cut the bushes. “Nobody is taking responsibility while we lose valuable property here in the meantime. Thieves find it easy to break-in and steal while using the very dense bushes as a hide out,” added another resident Lesley Ndlaleni. Ndlaleni showed Express Indaba a house that was broken into the previous weekend whilst the owner and neighbours were all at work. They said they did not know who the owners of the overgrown plots were but were taking the brunt in the meantime. “The people we spoke to, however, claimed the area was private property and therefore not the responsibility of the municipality,”

PE police need help to solve murder case NCEBA DLADLA
said Ndlaleni. Local Residents Association Chairperson Robin Ownhouse said, “These overgrown bushes have become too much of a problem. We have noticed that thieves steal and use the area for their loot and also as a place to plan their next break-in.” In the meantime, the concerned residents from Thursday last week have started to collect R50 from each household and are employing people to cut the bushes. Ward councillor Retief Odendaal said the residents’ complaint was justified. He said their safety was very important and that it was his office that organised for PELRHA to cut the bushes. But he also understood when PELRHA two years later, argued that it was not their responsibility. “We are looking at possibilities of addressing their plight, by cleaning the area, by expediting installing of street lights, talking to SAPS for more visible policing, as well as encouraging residents to play a more active role in community safety, among other things,” he said. Nelson Mandela Bay municipal spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki said he understood the plight of the concerned residents. He said, “They must bring the problem to the attention of the municipality. Yes, it is the responsibility of the owners of the plots to cut the bushes, but we can trace the owners for them to do what is right.” Mniki added, however, that the metro municipality could help the residents by cutting the bushes and later claim the costs from the property owners. “We could search for them (property owners), add the costs to their accounts and threaten to take legal action against them if they refused to pay,” he said.
PORT Elizabeth police have appealed for help from the public in their investigation of the murder of a 46-year-old man last Saturday. “The man, who was identified by members of his family as Vusumzi Geleba, was found in Mtshiselwa Street, Kwazakhele, in front of his neighbours’ house,” police spokesperson Constable Mncedi Mbombo said.
Geleba was stabbed several times in the upper body. “The motive of the killing is unknown to the police but the murder is under investigation,” Mbombo said. In another incident, a 23-year-old New Brighton man died of head injuries after being hit by a car in Norhongo Street in New Brighton. “It is alleged that a 36-year-old man from Algoa Park was driving a blue BMW that hit the man,” Mbombo said.

Surprise 70th birthday party for beloved local priest NCEBA DLADLA THE children of Mlamli “Sukwini” Hashe (70) of Ezinyoka in Port Elizabeth surprised their father with a birthday party on Saturday, to thank him for being the good and exemplary father that he was, as well as to thank God for his health.

Hashe is a retired priest of the African Catholic Church who served as a Canon in both Port Elizabeth and Queenstown Parishes of the Eastern Cape Diocese. He was born on the 8th March 1946 at Ngcabasa Village in the Middledrift area as the eldest son of Mphathi and Nonise Hashe, who have both since passed on. His birthday celebrations were delayed owing to a severe illness which resulted in him having to be hospitalised, said his son Simphiwe Hashe who together with siblings Siyabulela (and wife Sinoyolo), Mboneneli (and wife Solakha), Vumile (and wife Soyama) Nikiwe, Nobuhle and Nomalawu organised the party. “He almost succumbed to this illness. His health became the family’s priority. When his health improved, the family took the decision to reignite the preparations once more culminating in the Saturday festivities,” Simphiwe told Express Indaba.
According to Simphiwe they were celebrating a life well lived – a life that epitomised what it meant to be a selfless human being. Every speaker described the reverend as a helpful and selfless person who deserved the best in life. “It is his modest yet magnanimous life that thrust him into being the glue that binds the family together for many years, many times to his (own) detriment. He will be the first to tell you how unsatisfied he is with the life he has lived for he could not achieve all of his desires in life,” said Simphiwe. His wife, mama Nofumanekile also thanked Rev Hashe for being a loving and carrying husband and father. “I love you Sukwini,” she said to a loud applause. The children bought him a large TV set so that he would not fight with his 19 grandchildren when he wanted to watch news, every hour, in all different languages. “His health problems have taken their toll on him. He does not miss the opportunity to express his gratitude to God for the energy that he garnered to enable him to achieve what he has. We, as his family, have no words to express our gratitude to him for the wonderful person that he is to us,” said Siyabulela who is a layminister. Rev. Hashe thanked his children and all who visited him in hospital during his illness.
Assistance for gogo after deadly fire NCEBA DLADLA A HUGE blaze in which a man died and which destroyed the house, the shacks behind it and all the furniture of the Kati family, has united the community in grief and in support of the family. Port Elizabeth police are investigating the fire that broke out in the house in Livingstone Drive, New Look, Zwide, on Saturday, June 11, that killed 47-year-old Sipho “Mbonzo” Kati. Out of the family of 12 young and old who resided on the premises (the youngest of whom is a three-year-old), Mbonzo was the only one who could not escape the raging fire. “The day was windy, but we do not know what caused the fire. All we know is that it ate everything that we had. Some of the furniture was still pretty new. But it is the killing of my nephew Mbonzo that destroyed us,” said gogo Regina Kati (70) about the man whose charred body was discovered by firefighters an hour after the blaze started. The gogo, who suffers from diabetes and high blood pressure, was taken to the doctor for help as her sugar level was very high. “Our cousin received a decent funeral, thanks to neighbours, family and friends,” said Thabo Moahi, the gogo’s son. “Everything went very well. We must also mention, however, that we are extremely disappointed with political parties that
promised to assist the family with the burial and never showed up.” “We had to make other arrangements at the eleventh hour, and we were nearly disgraced,” a dejected Moahi said. “We want to thank community members and the involvement of the Eastern Cape Community Chest,” said New Look Community Development Programme chairperson Wandile Junundu. The family was visited by representatives from various political parties. Junundu said they had told political parties from the outset that they would not allow them to use the plight of the family for electioneering purposes. “Except for the temporary structure from the emergency services in which we are currently hiding our heads, it is however, the Community Chest that carried the family through. We want to thank them,” said Moahi. “We do a winter woolly project which helps us get blankets, unparishable stuff and unwanted clothing from members of the community. We always have something in store especially for the winter when fires and floods are common,” said Community Chest spokesperson Colette Theron. Theron said when Junundu informed them of the Kati family’s plight, they had been happy to come and assist. Port Elizabeth police spokesperson Constable Mncedi Mbombo confirmed that an inquest docket had been opened.

Quest autism school celebrates 21years REPORTER THIS year Quest School – the first Eastern Cape school founded for children with autism – celebrates 21 years of existence, having grown from a tiny school with only six pupils to a large school with a hostel and computer lab accommodating nearly 100 pupils today. Quest was originally housed in an old church building when it first opened its doors in 1995, but today occupies much bigger premises in South End, Port Elizabeth. The school’s journey began thanks to the support of the Jeeva Foundation. The Foundation bought the school’s first building in Uitenhage. When the school outgrew the building, the Foundation bought the house next door, and converted it into a hostel for some of the learners. Quest School is now the only government subsidised school in the Eastern Cape catering for children with autism between the ages of 5 and 18. School principal Lottie de Vries said, “The school’s doors are open today because of the many volunteers and communities who have over the years endlessly supported our school.” In 2001 the school relocated to South End in Port Elizabeth, to an old school building owned by the Department of Education. Today the school caters for 89 children, and has 13 teachers and teaching assistants, 12 housemothers, a principal and administrative staff. The therapy department employs an occupational and speech therapist. Principal De Vries says the school continues to receive support from the Jeeva Foundation. “They have been with us from the very beginning. When we relocated to the new

Munir Jeeva, a trust member of the foundation, visited the school this month and said staff were doing “incredible work with the children.” “These children must be seen and heard,
Local business leaders urged to brave cold and sleep out for charity REPORTER THE Boardwalk’s executives, employees and representatives from about 50 local organisations will be spending the night under the stars on July 28 to raise awareness and collect necessities for local children’s charities. The Boardwalk challenges other local businesses to join its team of volunteers in braving the cold for one night at the 2016 CEO Sympathy SleepOut to help spread warmth and hope amongst vulnerable children at Healing Minds Community Centre and Khayalethu Boys. Sympathy SleepOut volunteers will spend the night under the stars in the Wimpy Forecourt at The Boardwalk. There will be various activities throughout the night to keep everyone in good spirits as they give up their home comforts to support this worthy cause. In addition, soup will be prepared on site for distribution to needy communities the following day by The Boardwalk staff members. The Boardwalk’s CEO Sympathy SleepOut is aligned with the Sun International CEO SleepOut to be hosted in Johannesburg on the same night. The CEO SleepOut, founded in Australia in 2006, challenges local business leaders to join the global movement to raise funds, awareness and empathy for homelessness and the challenges faced by vulnerable children every day. The inaugural South African CEO SleepOut in 2015 raised more than R26 million through its inau-
gural event. Many of the country’s top business leaders have already registered to participate in this year’s event. The Boardwalk’s general manager, Brett Hoppé, said, “We encourage caring businesses to be part of our first CEO Sympathy SleepOut. We will be spending a night under the stars in a show of solidarity with Sun International’s CEO, Graeme Stephens, and representatives from some of the country’s top companies. “By sacrificing home comforts for just one night and donating to this worthy cause, local companies can help alleviate the burden on two of Port Elizabeth’s children’s charities by providing warmth, nourishment and other necessities. These organizations rely heavily on the support they receive from caring corporate citizens to continue operating.” Companies can be part of the initiative for a donation of R5 000 or items to that value. On the wish list from Healing Minds Community Centre are a computer, washing machines, an electric stove, toilets, a deep freezer, an urn, kitchen cabinets and appliances, bed linen, curtains and a taxi for transporting the children. On the wish list for Khayalethu Boys is warm winter clothing, personal hygiene products and toiletries, sports equipment, cleaning materials, and boys’ shoes, in particular “takkies”. and have the right to an education. “The school offers an individual education plan for each learner, and also prides itself in teaching in three official languages - Xhosa, English and Afrikaans - which is remarkable,” said Jeeva. He encouraged other businesses to support the school. “The school has a computer lab which was donated by MTN Foundation, through the vis-
it of the Deputy Minister of Social Development, Henrietta Bogupani Zulu. This is the type of support businesses can offer,” said Jeeva. The programmes offered to the learners at the school help them with job-readiness skills including a recycling project, in-service training and job placement at different companies, an echo-brick project where plastic bottles are filled with plastic bags and then used by organisations to build houses, as well as admin support for Ironman and office skills. The school follows the same terms as mainstream schools. They follow the CAPS curriculum, but often have to adjust in places. Through the computer lab the learners are taught how to send emails, open and work in Word documents and compile Power Point presentations. While the hostel has the capacity to accommodate 40 learners, it currently hosts 19 boarders. Autism is diagnosed four times more often in boys than in girls. Children diagnosed with an Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) suffer with a group of developmental disabilities that can cause significant social, communication and behavioural challenges. Jeeva added that although the school currently received a subsidy from the Department of Education, it was still heavily reliant on charitable donations from the community and volunteers. “Quest report their progress and their needs to the Jeeva Foundation every year, and we then include their needs in our yearly budget,” he said. Meanwhile the old building in Uitenhage has been taken over by the Sunshine Special School which caters for children with special needs. That school is also supported by the Jeeva Foundation.

New Brighton woman triumphs over adversity
‘Stop complaining and never give up’
REPORTER
REPORTER Lindiwe Cezula.
VOLKSWAGEN Group South Africa’s (VWSA) CSI initiatives continue to make a positive and tangible impact on the youth of Nelson Mandela Bay. United Through Sport (UTS), which is supported by Volkswagen, uses sport as a medium to promote child and youth development in disadvantaged communities. UTS impacts on the lives of over 30 000 children from disadvantaged townships in the Metro annually. VWSA Chairman and Managing Director, Thomas Schaefer, said, “The education and development of young people in our communities is a strong focus for Volkswagen and Lindiwe Cezula’s encouraging story motivates us as a company. That is why this year alone VWSA will invest close to R15-million on CSI initiatives.” Hailing from New Brighton, 19year-old Lindiwe Cezula grew up under tough conditions with an illiterate mother who never had formal employment and her father having died when she was only two. UTS came across Lindiwe at Inqkubela Primary School in KwaZakhele through the Mass Participation Programme in 2009, where she immediately stood out as a talented netball player. “I didn’t even know there were netball trials on that day and I think this was a matter of being at the right place at the right time,” said Cezula. Owing to her impressive sport skills and academics, she was offered a full bursary which would see her attending Pearson High School in Summerstrand. When Cezula first joined Pearson High School in Grade 9 in 2011 through the UTS Bursary programme, she scored only 11% in English and 13% in Maths in her first exams.
MEET Andrew Botha, a meek young man filled with ambition and a willingness to learn. From a young age he knew that he was not like his peers in terms of physical abilities.

“Pearson High School was a completely different world for me. I have to admit initially I was incredibly overwhelmed – I went from being the top student in my previous school to being at the bottom of the class,” she said Cezula was determined to succeed. “Every Friday I would take a book from the school library and read it over the weekend returning it on Monday and every night I would study for four hours to try to catch-up on my work - gradually term by term my marks started to
improve,” she said. Cezula finished her four years at Pearson High School having represented the school at netball, debating and Eistedfodd. She also received the prize for the top isiXhosa student and the ‘Donovan Rabbie’ Award for Perseverance. She achieved a bachelors pass matriculation and is now studying towards a BA Administration and Politics degree at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University – she is the first person in her family to go to university.
In September 2005, he was diagnosed with a neuromuscular disorder and in 2009, while in secondary school, underwent an operation to correct his scoliosis, resulting in his missing the first term of his grade 11 year. Despite his physical challenges, he never became dispirited and never lost hope. Growing up in Schauderville, which is rather infamous for gangsterism, Botha and his sisters were diligent at school, determined to rise above circumstance and make a success of their lives. After completing school, Botha immediately began seeking work but his disability and lack of qualifications were hindering him. The turning point came when he was offered the chance to undergo a Business Administration learnership through The Boardwalk which was introduced to provide skills development opportunities for young people with disabilities. Botha’s enthusiasm and commitment were immediately noticed, and he was offered a temporary position as a training coordinator at The Boardwalk while he completed his learnership. After a year of diligence, The Boardwalk offered him a permanent position as switchboard operator. He loves his job working at the busy Boardwalk, and says he is keen to keep climbing the ladder there. “The Business Administration learnership changed my life and has indeed served as a foundation for me to further
my studies as well as my working career. Had it not been for this opportunity, I believe it would have been very difficult for me to find employment,” says Botha, adding that he believes there are lots of opportunities for him at Sun International, despite his disability. “I am living with a rare condition called Minicore Myopathy which slows down the progression of muscle growth within the human body. Owing to my physical disabilities, I am limited in the types of jobs and fields I can pursue. However, I am mobile and I am no different from anyone else who has ambition and career aspirations.” His pet hate is complaining and people who complain. “Complaining gets you nowhere,” he says. His advice to other youths who face challenges in furthering their studies or gaining employment: “Refrain from allowing your mind to control you by believing you can’t get something done because of disadvantages within your life, whether it’s family or personal problems. “You can achieve a lot if you just stay focused. I always imagine having only myself and not having anyone to assist me with getting through life. This leaves no choice but to make something of yourself, by yourself. My motto is ‘a true winner never gives up’. I have always lived by this.” The Boardwalk’s General Manager Brett Hoppé says, “Andrew’s story is inspiring for young people who might feel hopeless about their future. He is proof that if you have a willingness to learn and a positive outlook, you can rise above your circumstances to achieve. Grab every opportunity to develop that comes your way. You have the power to change your reality.”

PE resident chosen as Mrs Africa finalist
Cowan High celebrates 70-year milestone
REPORTER PORT Elizabeth born, Noni Mbete (26), has recently been selected as one of the top 40 Mrs Africa 2016 Continental finalists.
NCEBA DLADLA
Mbete, a business manager in finance and insurance at Bidvest McCarthy, is the only finalist in the pageant from the Eastern Cape. “I am so grateful for this amazing opportunity to represent my country, and to be the only finalist from the EC.” Mbete, who currently resides in Walmer with her husband, Zukile Mbete, and two children, described charity work as “very close to my heart.” “My Mrs Africa journey involves a lot of humanitarian work. I am passionate about charity and taking the opportunity to give back. I still get so warm inside when I think of how I spent my birthday last month. I decided to feed 26 children from Walmer location in PE. “Through the amazing platform of the Mrs Africa Foundation, which is the official charity organization of the Mrs Africa pageant, we have two focus points that involve giving dignity back to women and young girls across the African continent through Dignity Dreams. Our other focal point is to financially support the Nzuri Project in Eastern DRC to treat women who suffer from Endemic Goitre and Fistula conditions. “In aid of this initiative, I am currently planning a fund-raising gala dinner in August. It will be at a very elegant venue in Summerstrand with our very own incredible PE talents who will grace us with amazing performances. There will also be well-known speakers giving wisdom on life topics. The official invitation with full details will be out soon,” Mbete said. The Mrs Africa pageant opened its entries in February this year and has had a huge response from married women across the Afri-

in the 21st century with its own challenges where it was of utmost importance to prepare pupils to become more responsible, accountable and become “beyonders”. It had, however, concerned the members of staff, the management team, the governing body, parents and learners to note the deterioration of the school buildings, said Esterline Fortuin, a member of staff, adding that the school was in desperate need of a hall and the fixing of broken doors, windows and the roof, among other improvements. “The school needs painting. Some classrooms can’t even be described as derelict. In some cases, some classes do not even have a cupboard for teachers to store their work,” said Fortuin, adding that they had organised a series of fund-raising events that were set to continue until October 9. A music concert was organised at Nangoza Jebe Hall on June 18 as part of the 70th anniversary celebrations. On Saturday, July 30, the school will hold a derby day, on September 23 it will embark on traditional celebrations, on October 7 there will be a golf day at the PE Golf Club, on October 8 there will be a gala dinner at the Boardwalk Convention Centre and a jazz afternoon will be held at the school on Sunday, October 9.
The school in New Brighton, established in 1946 by Port Elizabeth leader the Reverend Joseph Cowan as a primary school, was upgraded to a high school in 1974. Cowan High School continues to breed leaders of note like former Nelson Mandela Bay mayor Nceba Faku, businessman and former apartheid activist Khusta Jack, former Cosas and ANC Youth League president Lulu Johnson and former Kwaru, SABC EC region and Springbok manager Zola Yeye. “ Our 70th celebration is a momentous occasion in the history of our school and the community it has served since 1946,” said principal Trevor Dolley, who thanked his predecessors for laying a solid foundation for future generations to build on. Throughout the years, Cowan had flourished in all spheres of academics, sports and discipline, said Dolley about the school, whose motto is “Responsibility, Accountability and Beyonders”. Taking the post of principal of the school in 2009 had humbled him, given the struggles that had to be fought for a just and equal society free from discrimination, Dolley said. It was equally humbling for him and his dedicated staff to take charge of education

can continent. The participating countries in this year’s Mrs Africa pageant consist of Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Namibia, Kenya, Swaziland, Mauritius and South Africa. The finalists will have the opportunity to compete for one of five Mrs Africa 2016 international titles, and as part of their prize package they will be flown to international destinations to represent their African continent. The Mrs Africa 2016 grand finale, which is hosted in South Africa this year, will take place in November.

ZWIFA Premier League front runners face strong opponents SELBY MADIKANE GOLDEN Aces will have to pull out all the stops when they face the gallant Real Crusaders in their Zwide Football Association (ZWIFA) Ntando Tours and Transport Premier League clash at Zwide Stadium on Sunday at 15h00. Aces are very desperate for three points in order to cement their position on top of the ZWIFA Ntando Tours and Transport Premier League log table. As things stand, Crusaders are lying in the fourth position of the log. Crusaders are the only side that have always managed to disappoint Aces. The Soweto-On Sea side, Aces, will not be easy opponents because they are a most formidable side that has quality players. Crusaders would not want to see their dominance over Aces coming
to an end on Sunday. So this game promises to be a thrillling one for the supporters. Zwide Pirates, who would like to see Crusaders defeating Aces, have not yet thrown in the towel in their bid to win the league title. Pirates play against the unpredictable and tricky Swartkops United but Pirates Head Coach Cedric Smith has something in store for his charges. Major Chiefs are hot favourites to defeat the hapless Manchester City. Kuyasa United who are lying in the third position of the league table, will have nothing to stop them thumping the lacklustre Morning Stars. Camper United faces Strikers United while Gal City will take on Shining Stars. Zwide Celtics play against Sophakama, with Young Killers taking on Shooting Stars.
Real Crusaders are set to give Golden Aces a tough battle.

International and former SA champs in warm-up fight NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay’s only male boxer with a championship belt Siphosethu “The Gift” Ncisane, who holds the World Boxing Federation (WBF) International Mini-flyweight title, will fight against former South African Junior Flyweight champion Thabiso Moorosi of the Free State at the Lilian Ngoyi Sports Centre in Kwazakhele on Sunday, July 24. The eight-round non-title scrap is brought about courtesy of Sibongile Nkebe’s Silindokuhle Boxing Promotions. It is a warm-up fight to keep Ncisane, who won the B-Grade title in December last year, somewhat busy as demanded by the prescripts of the WBF as a sanctioning body. When he was here in the Bay, WBF president Howard Goldberg instructed Caiph Camp and Silindokuhle Boxing Promotions, that look after the business interests of the young lad Ncisane, to keep him active so that
he could improve on his WBF ratings with the aim of fighting for the real world title. “Nobody is interested in fighting Ncisane in the Eastern Cape. We decided to go out and found Moorosi who is the former SA champion. This is not going to be an easy fight,” admitted Ncisane’s mentor Caiphus Ntante. With a record of 18 fights, 11 wins (9KOs), 5 losses and two stalemates, the Ficksburg, Free State-born Moorosi is no pushover. Walmer Township’s Ncisane, with 9 wins (5KOs) and a single loss in 11 starts, must bring his A-game to the fight on the date in question. And, Ntante believes they took the fight knowing it was a stiff test which The Gift would ultimately pass. In the main supporting bout over eight rounds in the lightweight division, Port Elizabeth’s KZN recruit Sanele “Tornado” Msimang will square off against Tanzanian national based in Cape Town Zaid Zungu in what promises to be a humdinger. In the main preliminary bout, Eastern
Cape Super-middleweight champion Lesley Hope will square off in a non-title fight over six rounds against Lindithuba Wole, a prospect. In four round bouts, debutante JP Pretorius will fight against Unathi Ndlebe in the heavyweight division; Mzukisi Ben will challenge Lubabalo Bokuva (Junior Light) and Thando Mahlahla will take on Bonwabile Myungula (bantamweight). In the only female bout, Portia Base will fight against Bongiwe Colani in the mini-flyweight division. The WBF International champion Siphosethu “The Gift” Ncisane of Walmer will trade leather with Thabiso Moorosi at Lilian Ngoyi Sports Centre. Ncisane is flanked by trainer Caiphus Ntante (left) amd stablemate Lungisa Jikani. At the back is promoter Sibongile Nkebe of Silindokuhle Boxing Promotions. PHOTO: NCEBA DLADLA

NEW Brighton side City Lads will pull out all the stops to ensure that they do not lose to Birmingham City in front of their home supporters in their Sasol Ladies Coastal Stream clash that will take place at Chevrolet Stadium in New Brighton on Saturday. Lads, who are the only Nelson Mandela Bay side that has been campaigning in the provincial ladies league for more seasons, are set to defeat City. Gunners stars Lumka Nowhi Mjana, Noluthando Seti, Pinkmeisie Sonjica, Andiswa Ndesi and Phakama Duru will show their home supporters that they are seasoned
players. On the other hand the Buffalo City side, will not allow the home side to break their unbeaten run. City Lads will, however, fight tooth and nail on their home turf. Golden Stars will have to redeem themselves when they play against Manchester Babes at Gelvan Fields at 1pm. Stars will have to prove that they are made of sterner stuff than Babes.
