Boost for Bayworld ANIKA DE BEER
W
HILE the embattled Bayworld complex has received the long-awaited news that parts of it will finally be run by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, after years of battling through red tape to achieve this, Friends of Bayworld are also rallying their efforts to keep it afloat. The group, which is dedicated to supporting the facility, is hard at work planning another of their successful Night at the Museum events which will be held on July 23. According to Friends of Bayworld representative, Anelle Bailey, they started the
the complex. MEC of the department, Pemmy Majodina, said the provincial legislature has approved that the recreation and oceanarium part of Bayworld be run by the municipality for project management and redevelopment purposes. This means that the project to redevelop Bayworld will be handled by the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA). Pierre Voges, CEO of the MBDA, said the upgrade would cost about R300 million. “We do not have the money yet, but we will find it,” Voges said. According to Voges, Dorelle Sapere, who is the Planning and Development Manager at MBDA, will convene a group of experts to in-
Night at the Museum campaign, of which the third edition will be held this year, with a Facebook event page. “We expected maybe 200 to 500 people to show up (for the first one). By 7pm, we had to close the doors as the buildings were filled to capacity. About 1 500 people attended,” she said. The first event was restricted to the Museum and Snake Park only and last year, they expanded it to include the entire Bayworld complex. More good news for the complex is the announcement on Friday that the Eastern Cape Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation and the municipality have signed a service level agreement for the upgrading of

Sizwe Kondile’s spirit brought home NCEBA DLADLA CALLS for unity and a spirit of comradeship among members of the ANC were made during the spiritual repatriation of Gcinisizwe Kondile, who was abducted and brutally murdered in Vlakplaas by the apartheid apparatus in 1981. Kondile’s body was never found, but details of his murder were revealed by Dirk Coetzee in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) in the 1990s. Working with the Department of Justice, the Kondile family of New Brighton went to the Komartipoort where the murder took place as well as to Freedom Park in Johannesburg to pick up the spirit of “the hero” who died studying for a B Juris degree at Fort Hare at 24 years of age. But it was at Topiya Ascension Church in New Brighton that the family, according to Kondile’s friend and comrade in arms, advocate Vusi Pikoli, had finally closed a chapter of his life with his memorial service and symbolic burial. Each speaker described Kondile as a man who had loved humanity and dedicated his life to the struggle for freedom and democracy. “He left his studies at Fort Hare and was
never deterred by death threats but ultimately paid the price. The ANC should, in his honour, continue to embark on this radical economic transformation path,” ANC provincial executive committee member and regional task team head Vuyani Limba said. In Kondile’s name, Limba said, “The ANC should prevent the disharmony between Florence Matomela House and the City Hall. As a RTT member, people accuse me of siding with Danny Jordaan. Do you know why? They want to continue with corruption. “Why shouldn’t I side with Jordaan? Jordaan is the incumbent mayor of this metro municipality standing for the ANC.” Another of Kondile’s comrades, Phaki Ximiya, said people should learn from people like Kondile who did not do things for personal glory. “For Kondile, it was never about him. Our leaders are letting us down. They are dividing the organisation,” Ximiya said. The ANC needed Cosatu and must do everything humanly possible to stop the more than 300 000 Numsa members from leaving Cosatu, he said. Pat Kondile said the event had helped the family to be able to heal a very deep wound of almost 31 years since the disappearance and murder of Sizwe.

EFF receives electioneering mobility NCEBA DLADLA ECONOMIC Freedom Fighters secretarygeneral Godrich Gardee took delivery of three brand-new vehicles sponsored by the Reverend Dr Xolani Tengo of the Tengo Dialogue and Foundation 4 Community Development Network Trust last Wednesday.
Rev. Dr Xolani Tengo delivers keys to EEF General Secretary Commissar Godrich Gardee while other Fighters look on. PHOTO:NCEBA DLADLA
The handover took place at Tengo’s house in Goniwe Street, KwaNdokwenza. The vehicles, leased at R68 000 a month, according to Tengo, are branded and aimed at helping the EFF to campaign and compete well in order to win the highly contested Nelson Mandela Bay local elections. Tengo promised to lease three more to help the EFF mobilise and drum up support. “We’re doing this to support our organisation,” Tengo said. “The EFF is new but it is not poor. We also want to do away with the idea that the EFF is only in Gauteng. The EFF is where the people are. Like poverty. Poverty is not only in Gauteng, it is here.” He said they in the metro were fully behind
the national leadership of the EFF. “This is history in the making,” Gardee said. “It has never happened that an individual sponsors the EFF in such a significant way. Nobody wants to come closer to us. We are like people with leprosy.” He said EFF leader Julius Malema had also expressed his gratitude for the gesture. People dissatisfied with abject poverty, living in squatter camps and without dignity 22 years after democracy, wanted change and the EFF would give them that change, he said. Gardee warned the fighters to use the vehicles only for electioneering. “The EFF wants to win the metro outright. We want to state, however, that we’ll go into a coalition with other opposition parties and not with Zuma’s party (the ANC),” he said. The marches and the rallies his party had held in Nelson Mandela Bay since March last year had shown a steady growth in numbers, which mean the EFF would take a significant chunk of the electorate in this their first municipal election, he said.
Boost for Bayworld Conitnued from page 1 The main feature of the event will be the Treasure Hunt in the Museum. This activity will encourage participants to read the displays to answer questions. Local company Magnetic Storm will provide special effects during the hunt with the
use of sound, lighting and audio-visual equipment. The funds generated at the event will be used to purchase a fireproof cabinet for the Museum’s Otolith Collection, which comprises more than 19 000 ear bones collected from marine life. Any additional funds will go towards the
maintenance of the Snake Park and the Museum. Night at the Museum will take place on Saturday, July 23, from 5pm to 10pm. Entry is R25. Children under the age of three may enter free. Tickets are available at Bayworld and at the Kids Emporium in the Baywest Mall.
. Friends of Bayworld is an annual membership at Bayworld which grants card holders free access to the Port Elizabeth Museum, the Oceanarium, Snake Park and the No 7 Castle Hill Museum. Last year they sponsored the refurbishment of the Penguin Enclosure. For more info, visit the Night at the Museum Facebook page.

Craft ups the ante for taste adventurers THE Boardwalk’s gourmet burger and ribs restaurant, Craft, has upped the ante for taste adventurers with some exciting new twists to its just-refreshed menu. “As if the bold and extensive choice of hunger-busting, taste-bud-titillating gourmet burgers, salads and desserts couldn’t get any better, our culinary team has pulled a few more surprises out of the hat,” said Boardwalk’s Marketing Manager, Nqobile Majozi. On the burger front, there are two new musttries; the Black and White-blackened Fish (panga) burger decked with corn and red pepper relish and guacamole and served with crispy sweet potato, and the Dirty Pig, a mouth-watering pulled pork, slaw and rib sauce stack. New to the cast of outrageous salads there is the Kitchen Sink, burgeoning with mixed

These include amongst others the King of Rock and Roll, a sugar-dusted doughnut, with peanut butter and banana ice cream, and jack Daniels glazed pecan nuts and the Chuck Berry, a sugar-dusted doughnut, with blue berry and vanilla ice cream, topped with old fashioned frosting and smarties. Craft’s beef burgers are handmade on site

Eastern Cape first in electronic waste recycling REPORTER AN electronic waste recycling start-up, based in the Propella Business Incubator, aims to be one of the first companies on the continent to fully recycle electronic waste. Propella is a partnership between the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, the Industrial Development Corporation and the private sector and is focused on generating renewable energy. “Should we receive our required funding we will be the first electronic waste plant in Africa to have an end-to-end zero-to-landfill facility,” says Enrico Vermaak of eWaste Technologies Africa. “Electronic waste” is defined as “anything with a plug” being thrown away, such as discarded computers, office electronic equipment, entertainment device electronics, mobile phones, television sets and refrigerators. According to the minister of environmental
affairs, Edna Molewa, electronic waste makes up five to eight percent of municipal solid waste in South Africa and is growing at a rate three times faster than any other form of waste. eWaste Technologies Africa moved into the Propella advanced manufacturing hub in April 2016. “Being housed in Propella has given us the opportunity to have our warehouse, research and development facilities and office space all located in one building, which is a massive benefit to us,” he says. Seeing the gap in the market for what the minister identified as a lack of recycling infrastructure, eWaste Technologies Africa was set up to dispose of electronic waste. “We have secured Research and Development funding that has allowed us to procure entry-level electronic waste recycling equipment, and (we) are working with world leaders in the field of electronic waste recycling, as well as chemical engineering and process consultants, to establish a one-of-a-kind facility in
Port Elizabeth,” he says. Vermaak, who has been involved in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry for more than 15 years, says the company specialises in the disposal of ICT equipment “in a green and compliant manner”. Value-added services include on-site data destruction, data sanitation and asset management. The company currently has four fulltime employees, and sees potential for more job creation as it grows. . The company operates from Propella Business Incubator in the Humerail Business Park in Oakworth Drive. For info contact Enrico at 083 644 6962. Young men sell cupcakes to give hope to matrics HEILIE COMBRINCK IT is said an apple a day keeps the doctor away, but in KwaNobuhle it is rather, a cupcake a day brings hope all the way. “Yes, we want to change mindsets. We wish to bring hope. And we strive to promote entrepreneurship and community development, challenging the youth not to be dismayed by unemployment,” said Athenkosi Msutwana, the co-founder of Cupcakes with Hope. An average of 40 cupcakes a day are sold and since establishing Cupcakes with Hope during March 2016, thousands of cupcakes have been enjoyed, particularly by learners
at local schools. The initiative is run by six young men who strive to bring about change in their community through the selling of a variety of flavoured cupcakes. The men are Likhaya Nkohli, Siyabulela Mbalane, Lunathi Yoli, Sinethemba Magxaki, Athenkosi Mgutwana and Mbongeni Mdashe. “We bake from home in Jibiliza Street and deliver and sell these cupcakes at local schools. There are hurdles along the way, but we are determined to utilize that in assisting us to grow our initiative into a successful business. “We currently are running a cupcake sale campaign until August with the aim to raise funds, to assist the five best Grade 12 learners
of local high schools, in paying application fees to further their education,” said Athenkosi. This campaign includes 8 high schools in KwaNobuhle, meaning they wish to assist 40 top learners from the area to be able to further their studies. In achieving the goal of Cupcakes with Hope, they wish the public to support them by also placing cupcake orders. “No help is considered too small. We appreciate any help as we are trying our best to help others. We feel that our initiative is to encourage unity and to bring hope for a better future,” said Athenkosi. For more info regarding Cupcakes with Hope or to place orders, contact Siyabulela on 074 528 1638 or Athenkosi on 074 604 0135.

Children most vulnerable victims in the story of HIV/Aids NCEBA DLADLA PORT Elizabeth-born and Tshwanebased Nomakula Shweni has written a book as part of her contribution to the fight against the HIV/Aids pandemic. A nursing sister by profession, Shweni, popularly known as Noma, was in PE recently to talk about her book of short stories, entitled Sidelined, which tells touching stories about the most vulnerable people in the scourge of HIV, the children. Armed with a master of philosophy HIV management degree from the University of Stellenbosch and currently studying towards a PhD in health at Unisa, Shweni has been a champion of HIV/Aids awareness campaigns and education, having amassed 20 years’ experience as a professional nurse in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, before moving to Pretoria. Her stories are about children who
have been infected or affected by the disease, but were not told and prepared for that. They had to discover it for themselves and sometimes in situations way beyond their control, she said. One story is about a letter written by an HIV-positive mother who died when her child was 10 years old. “Children aren’t told by their parents that they were born with HIV,” Shweni said. “This is the reason why when they discover this themselves they become rebellious. The confidentiality clause plays a role here, but when they discover it, children don’t tell anyone.” Shweni said she believed that to fight a winning battle South Africa must look at the behaviour modification of adolescents and children and not depend on the traditional Abstain, Be careful and Condomise, also known as ABC. “This is not enough. Some children find out that they were HIV in-
fected without engaging in sex. Someone else brought this to them without them knowing and they discover it sometimes having infected others themselves.” Shweni said that while testing was encouraged, discovering the virus in their bodies even though they have never engaged in those things shattered the children. The leader of the NPO Siyanqoba, Shweni works only to keep the wolf away from the door. Otherwise, she wants to concentrate on visiting schools to call on pupils to debate these things and learn from them. The mother of two boys and a girl, Shweni, who calls herself a Baaienaar and mentions in her book the likes of veteran teacher Oom Geld Tyaliti as her inspiration in life, has fond memories of her schooldays at Simon Nongogo. During her visit here, she had talks with schools who promised to pilot a debating programme on these important health matters.

Prayer service for peaceful local elections NCEBA DLADLA
SACC Mandela Bay scribe, Rev Siya Tshatshu. PHOTO:SUPPLIED
THE South African Council of Churches (SACC) in Nelson Mandela Bay has organised a service at St Stephen’s Anglican Parish, Grattan Street, New Brighton, on Sunday to pray for peaceful August 3 local government elections. It starts at 3pm. “We invite every member of the
Christian faith who believes in the power of prayer to come and join us on the day and ask God to take control,” SACC Nelson Mandela Bay secretary the Reverend Siyabulela Tshatshu said. “We have the pleasure of having the chief executive officer of the Provincial Council of Churches, the Reverend Canon Lulama Ntshingwa, coming to preach for free and fair elections on the day,”
he said. While the invitation was extended to everyone, mayor Danny Jordaan and other mayoral candidates had been invited to attend this very important prayer service, Tshatshu said. “This is an opportunity for believers to take part in the work of the Word that became Man according to the biblical pericope found in John:1:14,” Tshatshu said. Elections were part of a necessa-
ry process of humanity and did not require enmity and hatred among men, he said. “Let us come together and pray for most successful and peaceful local government elections in South Africa on August 3,” Tshatshu said. For inquiries, Tshatshu can be contacted at 078 688 1580, or emailed at siyatshatshu@gmail.com.

Bush Bucks pluck out Winter Rose SELBY MADIKANE NEW Brighton Football Association (NEBFA) Sedgars Sport Premier League reigning champions Bush Bucks demolished the oncefeared Winter Rose 6-0 at Chevrolet Stadium on Saturday. Bucks were untouchable right from the start of the game, with Rose being kept on their back foot. Rose were one of the NEBFA Sedgars Sport Premier League tough sides but their supporters whimper every time their side plays. Bucks remain the only side in NEBFA Sedgars Premier League that has not yet suffered defeat. Other league title contenders PE Sundowns suffered their first defeat when they went down 2-1 to Real White City. Local taverns promote soccer development NCEBA DLADLA TWO Port Elizabeth Taverns proved to be very serious about their football at the weekend. Their football teams, Swallows and Lindikhaya, took part in the Provincial Carling League of Champs competition that took place at Wolfson Stadium, Kwazakhele over the weekend. Swallows beat Lindikhaya 2-0. Ten teams took part in the competition whose winners will take part in the National Championships in which winners from the other provinces will compete at the Nike Centre in Pimville, Soweto on Friday 23 July for a whopping R30 000 in prize money. Winners will also get VIP treatment during the Carling Black Label Cup match between Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Or-
lando Pirates. To take part in the competition that has been going on for five years now, taverns from across the country are judged according to their sales of Carling Black Label. “The company’s agents contact winning taverns and tell them to assemble a strong football team. We then train and sharpen their bodies,” said owner of Amathole Bottle Store, Sintu Tom. “Swallows, as a winning team, will be dressed, transported and accommodated for the duration of the competition in Johannesburg,” said the competition’s Eastern Cape ambassador Patrick Mayo. Mayo, who is a former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana marksman, lauded Carling Black Label for the initiative. Mayo said it would be foolish for anyone to underestimate the amount of talent dis-
played by the players. “I see the need for responsible drinking, discipline and an active citizenry that Carling Black Label is trying to create through this competition,” said Mayo. Among the other ambassadors of the Carling Black Label League of Champions are former football stars like Thando Mngomeni, Fabian McCarthy, Siyabonga Nkosi and Edward “Magents” Motale. “Through the Carling League of Champs we have been successful in making a contribution to bringing a difference in communities through football. “As we count down the days to the last play-offs happening in the Western Region, we look forward to witnessing the great atmosphere of supporters coming out in their numbers to rally behind their heroes,” said Nkosi.

Ntando Tours and Transport renews sponsorship contract with ZWIFA SELBY MADIKANE NTANDO Tours and Transport came to an agreement in terms of the sponsorship of the Zwide Football Association (ZWIFA) at Zwide Stadium Boardroom recently. Ayanda Ntando, who is a prosperous businessman in the taxi industry, said that he decided to renew the contract because there was a healthy relationship between him and ZWIFA.
“We are delighted to announce that the communication lines are always open between ZWIFA and us. They update us every week of their progress,” Ntando said. “We hear about ZWIFA Ntando Tours and Transport Premier League fixtures and results on the radio and we see the results in the newspapers, especially Express Indaba. Our social responsibility is to help in the upliftment of our communities; hence we decided to inject funds into grassroots sport.
“We sponsor ZWIFA with R42 554 for this season. ZWIFA did not disappoint us over the last season. We are very happy to see that ZWIFA is taking some great strides forward. Clubs should work very hard in order to succeed in their endeavours.” Transnet representative Mbulelo Mfecane stated that there was a contract between Transnet and Ntando Tours and Transport to bus their employees on a daily basis. Mfecane further stated that the company
that contracted with them should in turn uplift the standard of living of previously disadvantaged people. “We are happy that Ntando Tours and Transport are doing good things for the less fortunate people,” said Mfecane. On behalf of ZWIFA clubs, Cedric Smith hailed Ntando Tours and Transport and Transnet for coming to their rescue. ZWIFA Deputy Secretary Sipho Jacobs thanked Ntando Tours and Transport for renewing the sponsorship contract.

NEW Brighton-based side City Lads played to a 2-2 draw against Birmingham City in their Sasol Ladies Coastal Stream clash that was played at Chevrolet Stadium in New Brighton on Saturday.
Following their recent 4-0 loss to City Lads, SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay Women’s Regional League winners Sophakama Ladies failed to collect three points in front of their home supporters when they were walloped 6-2 by Thunderbirds in their game that was played at Zwide Stadium.
It was a gruelling match because the East London side made sure that they would not go home without a point. Lads did not let down their supporters as they played their hearts out against the high-flying East Londoners. Four goals that were scored were the true reflection of the game. Both coaches came to the game with the aim of collecting three points and good football was played. Despite their failure to honour their away game with Birmingham City in East London, Golden Stars proved that they were too strong for the gallant Manchester Babes which they defeated 2-1 in front of their supporters at Gelvan Fields. It came as no surprise when Mustangs Ladies embarrassed the University of Fort Hare with a score of 9-1 at the Alice Campus Grounds.
