THABISENG Didi, a Motherwell lass who entered the professional ranks in October last year, is determined to win a professional boxing title this year.
Didi (19) has a date to face Uitenhage’s Portia Base over four rounds in the Lilian Ngoyi Sports Centre in Kwazakhele on Saturday, 24 July. This is a warm-up fight ahead of the return-fight with East London’s South African Flyweight Champion Nozwelethu Mathonsi in East London on August 12. The boxer’s father Mthetho Didi said he believes Didi was given a raw deal in the first encounter with Mathonsi in Tshwane in December. She lost the fight on points. Under the guidance of her new mentor, Mphuthumi “Putco” Makeleni, who is a former

open boxing coach with vast experience, Didi is quicker, sharper and punches a lot harder. “I am more determined now. I have improved a lot. My opponents won’t see what hit them. First is Base, whom I stopped in our first fight. Then, it’ll be the big one against Mathonsi. I’ll be the new SA Flyweight champion,” she said. Boxing fans had a glimpse of this in an all-female boxing tournament in Durban on 18 March when Didi pummeled local lass Siphosethu Nxazonke over six blistering rounds. Didi is the first female boxer from Nelson Mandela Bay to turn professional after winning about 80 fights. These include three open boxing championship Gold Medals. She also travelled overseas for intense specialised training with the South African Amateur Boxing Organisation (SANABO) in 2014. Continued on page 2

Motherwell’s Didi in national fight Continued from page 1 She turned pro and registered an exciting 4th TKO win over Portia Base. “I have no struggle in the gym with Nthabiseng. She really wants to win the title,” said Makeleni of his protégé. Didi said, “I’ve been in boxing for five years now. I want to improve my home. It won’t take another five years for me to win a championship belt. I’ve got my family, father, mother and younger sister Nombulelo including my trainer and sponsors behind me. Nothing’s gonna stand in my way.” Mthetho Didi, who also boxed as an amateur in the mines under the tutelage of former SA Middleweight champion Daniel
Mapanya of Welkom, thanked Zonke Spar owner Kevin Klette who sponsors Didi. “Some time back Mr Didi approached us to support him and his boxing team. At Spar we have a very proud tradition of giving back to our communities as a way of showing our appreciation for their support,” Klette said. He said that he was struck by Didi’s commitment to and passion for the sport of boxing and it was for that reason he decided to get involved and assist her. About her father he said, “He is doing a great service to the community of Motherwell by giving these kids discipline through sport and a chance to reach for their own dreams.”
Metro mayor welcomes R40 million investment by Auto Motorcycles EXPRESS INDABA NELSON Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor Dr Danny Jordaan welcomed Eastern Cape company Auto Motorcycles’ R40 million investment announcement on Friday 8 July. Jordaan was invited to the company’s Heugh Road premises to personally inform him of plans to develop a 4 000 square metre piece of land next to the William Moffett Expressway to house a major retail outlet known as Queen Motor Spares. KTM Motorcycles will also be sold there and other tenants will be announced at a later stage. Mayor Jordaan thanked the company for the investment and said, “The fact that you are expanding is a major indicator of what is happening in Nelson Mandela Bay over the last couple of months. “Volkswagen South Africa is investing R4,5 billion, Goodyear R670 million, FAW is spending as well and local com-
pany Billson Trucks recently announced a R100 million investment. “Now we have another investment in the bike sector. It is welcome news for our Metro. If you compare with Detroit where the motor industry is in decline, in our city you see greater confidence and investment in the automotive sector. In addition we are also looking at diversifying our economy by growing the ocean economy, the creative economy and the township economy,” said Mayor Jordaan. With its head office in Queenstown, Auto Motorcycles has been in operation for 40 years. The local franchise was opened in 1999 in Albany Road and moved to Heugh Road in 2007. “The mayor was very encouraged by our investment in the city as we are planning for the future. Overall, I think the mayor was very happy about our new and exciting adventure.” said Sach Pillay, Auto Motorcycles Dealer Principal.

Motherwell Build It robbed at gunpoint NCEBA DLADLA BUILD-IT in the NU9 shopping Complex in Motherwell was robbed by three armed men around 12 noon last Wednesday. They fled with an undisclosed amount of cash. Members of staff and customers in the shop were surprised by three armed men who entered the shop with their faces hidden by clothing that looked like balaclavas. They drew firearms and forced the cashiers to open the tills. A cashier, who was traumatised by the incident and who cannot be named to protect her identity, said one man came to her till and forced her to open it. She said she realized in a split second that there was more than one attacker as two others had also been in strategic positions in the shop. “He grabbed the key, forced the till open and took the money. The other one also came and grabbed money from the other till while the third was pointing a cocked firearm at us. Thank God we did as they
told us and didn’t panic. Those were not toys but real guns,” the woman said. She said their attackers quickly disappeared in a getaway vehicle parked outside the complex. Owner of the shop, Sibongile Nkebe, said it was the first time, in almost 10 years in operation, that the shop had been robbed. “Money was taken. The unfortunate incident caused a lot of strain and panic among members of staff and customers. But we are relieved that no shots were fired and that nobody was injured,” Nkebe said. Head of security in the shopping complex, Patrick Mncayishe, said the safety of the people who entered the complex to do business or a service of any kind was of paramount importance to them – at all times. The incident, he said, was unfortunate. Motherwell police spokesperson, Captain Andre Beetge, confirmed the incident. He said police have opened a case of armed robbery for investigation.
Kupelo family in turmoil after homes burn down SIMBONGILE MDLEDLE THE Libode family of the Eastern Cape government spokesperson, Sizwe Kupelo, is in a state of shock following two of their homes burning down in the space of 6 days. Kupelo, who is also an emerging farmer, lost his home in Mkankatho locality in Li-
bode in a fire. In this fire Kupelo lost valuable items in the house and bales of cattle feed. The fire caused damage estimated to be R200 000 and left 90 cattle with no feed. Only a few days later, Kupelo’s grandfather’s home in the same locality of Mkhankatho, was also damaged in a fire. At the time of going to print it was not clear what caused the fire.
In the second fire, the furniture, refrigerators and other belongings in the house were burned to ashes. Kupelo’s uncle Fuzile Kupelo said they are confused over the incidents and how it could happen twice to the same family in such a short space of time. Speaking to Express Sizwe Kupelo said there are still no outcomes in the investigations that are underway.

Cope reveals Ward 43 candidate ahead of elections NCEBA DLADLA

Valley Market empowers township entrepreneurs REPORTER THE organizers at the SPAR Valley Market were proud to showcase Likusasa Lomama Community Project after identifying their initiative in the community. They equipped and empowered them with the resources needed to become social entrepreneurs and take their business to the next level. Organiser Ryan Le Roux says that this is an example of the innovation the market is using to turn profit into purpose. Phumla Dyafta and her team were invited to sell their surplus vegetables at the Valley Market recently as part of the market’s goal to give previously disadvantaged people an opportunity to be involved in business. The ladies arrived with heads of cabbage and bunches of carrots and spinach. They had woken up early on Saturday morning to pick the vegetables as they wanted them to be as fresh as possible - by 11am they had sold out completely. Likusasa Lomama consists of 35 backyard
vegetable gardens planted by families in Kwadwesi. The aim is for the produce from these gardens to supply the Community Soup Kitchen with enough vegetables to serve the needy in the neighbourhood. Currently it serves over 100 men, women and children every day. The project was started in 2012 by a group of ladies who needed to feed their families. Owing to the need in the community they soon started a soup kitchen in a garage for two days a week. Anyone was welcome to their soup provided they started a vegetable garden in their back yards, as well to assist the soup kitchen. The Likusasa ladies will be back in full force at the next SPAR Valley Market on August 6 with many more fresh vegetables to sell. SPAR Eastern Cape is excited to be a part of this community initiative in supporting local entrepreneurs. Their aim is to grow local suppliers with the hope of finding a vendor that can be mentored and grown into possibly one of their listed suppliers.
CONGRESS of the People (COPE) Provincial and Regional Leadership spent three days in Nelson Mandela Bay last week electioneering. Member of Parliament Legislature (MPL) Bishop Lievie Sharpely, Congress Regional Committee (CRC) Chairperson Khwezi Ntshanyana and acting Secretary Siyasanga Sijadu visited Wards 43, 46 and 47 in KwaNobuhle as well as Wards 55, 59 and 60 in Motherwell. Cope members on Thursday warmly greeted their Ward 43 candidate Nomonde Hobeni, an elderly citizen they were certain would win the ward. With the ANC having failed to meet the IEC deadline to register a candidate in this ward, the opposition parties are vying against each other for this ward. EFF Secretary-General Godrich Gardee last week said without the ANC which blundered, it was obvious that his party would win Ward 43. Ntshanyana said, “He’s lying. Mandela Bay voters were generally conservative
and would not give their vote to the youthful EFF, or to the DA, nor to the United Front candidate who changed parties, but rather to a seasoned community leader who has been with them in their fight for service delivery and a life of dignity.” He continued, “Service delivery is the main problem here. Instead of servicing the needs of the electorate, the councillor given the mandate to lead was busy with party-political wrangles. So, we are fielding a person who has been around. Someone who knows the problems of the area and has worked closely with the previous councillor, Mandla Bomvana, who has since died.” According to Ntshanyana, Hobeni has been taking care of communal issues and, looking after residents’ municipal problems by virtue of her willingness to assist others. Hobeni’s experience, Ntshanyana said, “stems from the days of fighting between the UDF members and AZAPO in the 1980s - Hobeni was there, quelling the fires. And this, Ward 43 residents know.”

PE lass Asanda crowned Miss Teen Commonwealth SA ANIKA DE BEER ASANDA Mchunu, a local teenager, was crowned the new Miss Teen Commonwealth SA last weekend in Pretoria. She beat 29 other girls from all over the country for the title. Mchunu won a R15 000 cash prize as well as other prizes from the competition sponsors and will be the new representative for a few brands. She does not know as yet what she wants to do with the money, but plans to keep it as a safety net in the meantime. “It will come in handy; it might not be next week or next month or even next year but sometime it will,” she said. Mchunu was previously crowned Miss Junior Teen South Africa in 2014 and has participated in several charity projects and events. She plans to use her new title to keep doing charity work and build on what she has already achieved. “To me, winning this title does not mean I get to change what I was doing before. It just means more consistency. Now I will
carry on the work I started with the Human Dignity Centre, M.T.R. Smit Children’s Haven and Rolemodels Imfundo Foundation. However, I am looking into starting my own charity organisation,” she said. Mchunu added that she chose these charities because they deal specifically with children and that the best way to make a difference was to start with them. She is currently a first-year Media, Communication and Culture student at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU). “It is clearly evident that my passion lies in Media and people.” Mchunu said that her new title is not meant for her alone. “This title is not just for me, it’s for everyone who supported me and carries on to support me. It is for my community, therefore winning it and being able to represent a country that I love means the world to me.” She will be representing South Africa next year at the Miss Teen Commonwealth International competition in London where she will compete against representatives from 53 other countries.

Free online maths course for better performance IT has been well documented that poor matric results in the Eastern Cape Province has also something to do with poor performance in Mathematics. An improved performance in maths, scholars believe, could lead to an improved performance in matric results. The Infinite Intelligence, a small company in education based at Sivuyiseni Primary School in KwaMagxaki, Port Elizabeth, is doing something to assist high school learners perform better in Maths, Science and Accounting. “We are concerned that our province is one of the worst performers in the mathematics pass rate. A wise man (once) said that if you are not part of the solution, then you are part of (or cause) the problem,” said Infinite Intelligence Founder and Director Tokyo Yaya. “Our view is that one of the common reasons why pupils struggled with Grade 11 and 12 maths, is that they lacked the foundation in the subject,” Yaya said, adding that they were aiming to equip them with the basic essentials to learn maths much easier and quicker. Working with a partner Ntomboxolo Jack,
he said, “In pursuit of remedying the situation in our province we designed a free online maths course which will be accessible via WhatsApp.” Yaya said they knew that the majority of high school learners owned cellphones and that is why they were using WhatsApp as a platform that the majority of high school learners spent most of their time on. He said it was convenient and absolutely free. “The course is targeting learners whose home language is isiXhosa. It comprises maths videos presented in isiXhosa, as well as assessments designed to equip the learners with the foundation essential for success in maths,” said Yaya, who is a part-time University of South Africa Maths and Science student with experience in tutoring. Yaya said his organisation believes in teaching in the learners’ home language to give them a better understanding of the subject. According to Yaya, the course material will be available as from the Monday 25 July 2016. For enquiries Yaya can be contacted at 079 344 5603 or on his Facebook Page. – NCEBA DLADLA

Masifunde Youth Choir wows on overseas tour EXPRESS INDABA WALMER’s Masifunde Youth Choir and their conductors are currently on tour in Europe and visited 4 cities - Bensheim, Lich, Mainz and Berlin in Germany en route to Reutlingen before they left for Switzerland on Sunday. They were warmly welcomed by their host families in Bensheim where they spent the first 3 days in Germany and got the chance to experience a day at a German school. Choir members stayed in small groups with host families, which gave them a deep insight into German culture but also shared information about South Africa. They had concerts in the cities they stayed in and all concerts had been exceptionally successful and well-received by the audiences. Masifunde Youth Choir thus far, has seen venues – mainly churches – packed, with people having to stand or sit on the floor. After the concert in Bensheim, the Bergstraesser Anzeiger newspaper wrote: “Together with the youth choir of the Altes Kurfuerstliches Gymnasium (a local high school) the youth presented a very special listening experience. “The audience was excited and praised the variety of music styles, the dynamics and the musical quality of both choirs. However, the atmosphere culminated without any doubt when our guests from South
Africa entered the stage – emotional, passionate and thrilling.” Besides their musical exchange with German schools, the choir has also been on some exciting and educational excursions. Whilst on tour, the choir had the chance to meet and perform for some high-ranking politicians. These include Malu Dreyer, the current Minister President of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, and Gerd Mueller, Federal Minister of Economic Cooperation and Development, in Mainz, and Brigitte Zypries, the current Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy and patron of Masifunde Germany. “It was an interesting experience to sing with other choirs and link our voices together,” said choir member Thabiso Flitshane (15). Another choir member, Yonela Maposa (20) said, “We really have made friends with our host families. Some of them even came to our concerts in other cities – that was super cool and motivated me”. Sibabalwe Komani (16) said, “I thoroughly enjoyed all our concerts so far. The audience loved our songs, because they are different from the music they usually listen to. Spending time with my host families has been great, too.” Nandipha Baliwe (18) said “I am enjoying this tour so very much and so far I have learnt some very interesting things about German culture and history. People are super nice and friendly.”
Nominations open for Senior Citizen of the Year Awards NCEBA DLADLA NOMINATIONS can now be made for the Senior Citizen Of the Year (SCOTY) Awards to be held at the Summerstrand Hotel in Port Elizabeth at noon on October 1. The awards, run by the Golden Oldies Fundraising Club, is a prestige event which recognises the time and effort volunteered by senior citizens who make a positive contribution to their communities. According to Juanita Krauspe, one of the organisers, the SCOTY awards work through a nomination process. The nominations are then assessed by a local selection committee and judging panel. Krauspe called on all local residents and community groups to make nominations for this year’s awards which are planned to coincide with Elderly Month in October. Krauspe said this was a great honour that residents could bestow on elderly people who made them proud to be South African. Hoza Golden-age organiser Jurmatha Majola (78) of New Brighton has been a proud winner of the Senior Citizen Of the Year Award for the 60 to 69-year-old as well as the 70 to 79 categories. Majola’s club works with the elderly who knit jerseys for needy school pupils in Nelson Mandela Bay. In keeping with the main objective of the Sen-
ior Citizen of the Year awards, Hoza Golden-age gogos promote active ageing and positive living through sport for the elderly. A proud Majola has joined the selection panel. She has nomination forms and is expected to nominate as well as receive nominations from residents. She said people could also contact her for names. Krauspe said: “These are senior citizens who make a difference in the lives of others and who go above and beyond in all spheres in their communities. “Also being honoured are people who will be turning 100 or more, a milestone that the organisers feel deserves recognition.”

The three main objectives of Senior Citizen of the Year are:
• To honour older persons for the active role they still play in their communities. There are many amazing older persons out there who are doing great things in their communities and are not being recognised for them. • To educate younger people to make provision for and to be active after their retirement so that they will not become a burden to the state and society and so that they too may aspire to greatness in their golden years. • Focusing on bridging the gap between the youth and senior citizens in South Africa.
The general public are invited to nominate possible candidates and all nominees will be invited for a more detailed information session. Categories are 60 to 69, 70 to 79, 80 to 89, 90 + open category, all 100 + merit award.
The choir also gave a performance in the street of one of the towns they visited.

FIRST BLACK F1 SOUTH AFRICAN CHAMPION:
Tschops Sipuka - a humble legend on and off the track NCEBA DLADLA DESPITE carrying the accolade of being the first black South African Formula 1 Motorsport Champion who represented his country at international championships, Tschops Sipuka remains a humble soul who believes that only the hand of God drives him to achieve greatness in life. A successful businessman and married father of two girls, Sipuka has met and conversed with the great and grandest, like Nelson Mandela. He has also learnt hard lessons which formulate a curriculum of knowledge, ethics and values from which he draws in life. It is, however, in the Bible that as a firm believer and motivational speaker Sipuka finds much wisdom, he said. Born and bred in Qumbu in the Transkei, Batshobonke Sipuka, aka Tschops, has achieved legendary status in the traditionally White sport. He made history by becoming the first racer to lead a national status championship; the first man of colour to drive the Super-truck; competed in the 25-hour cup race at Spa Franchorchamps in Belgium and came third; participated in the Proton Satria Cup Race at the Sepeng F1 Circuit in Malaysia and has achieved 12 pole positions and 14 podium finishes out of 20 races, which was the first for the Engen record book. These are just a few of the highlights in a racing career that spanned seven years, from 1998 to 2005. “I fell in love with motor racing growing up in the early 1980s – when it was the in-thing in Europe. In 1998 I got involved in it by chance when a relative, who worked at BP, met my idol Terry Moss who facilitated my internship at Volkswagen SA – where I did VW Motorsport,” said Sipuka.
Tschops Sipuka in action in the Bridgestone Production car at the East London Grand Prix Circuit. “I loved driving and I did well at racing. But, it is Terry who was instrumental in my whole racing career,” he said, adding that he went straight to saloon motor racing and never raced in a go-kart, which many racers start off with. Outside of South Africa, Sipuka always wanted to do the best he could and that was noted by Madiba whom he met at Qunu. “Growing up in the rural village of Qumbu,
with no street lights, all I had to look out for when driving were young chicks, goats and pigs. My capital city was Mthatha. But, I competed against the best in the world. So, I say, impossible is nothing! “I wouldn’t like my daughters to take up the sport, but to concentrate on education and rather do the sport that they loved and not to follow in my footsteps for fear of disappointment.

Disabled Judokas show their mettle at nationals NCEBA DLADLA RETIRED Despatch Judoka Sondisa Magajana continues to shine in the development of the sport in South Africa. Magajana of Despatch, took a team of 24 visually impaired and deaf players to the National Judo Championships at Carnival City in Johannesburg and brought back 17 medals. Eleven of those were Gold, four Silver and two Bronze medals, a proud Magajana said on his return from the competition on Saturday. Magajana is an officially recognised national Judo SA and SASCOC coach. “While there is a category for the able bodied and the visually impaired, my players took part in both the categories and won number one spot in the Senior Creative Kata Competition which shows the mastery of defence,” said Magajana. The top performers of the tournament were Ndyebo Lamani, Siyamthanda Zokoza, Siyamthanda Deleki, Andile Nquma, Mzamo Fumba and Khanyolwethu Ntuli. When he retired from competition in 2006, Kwazakhele-born Magajana took an unexpected turn to teach judo to the visually impaired pupils – firstly as part of the offshoot of the Volkswagen South Africa Club. He later introduced the sport to other Nelson Mandela Bay Metro areas as well as to the whole province.
“His clubs are at the Khanyisa School for the Blind in KwaDwesi, Lonwabo School for the Physically Disabled and Reuben Birin School for the Deaf, both in Missionvale. Magajana also took the sport to the Northern Lights School in Cotswold and Cape Recife in Summerstrand and went further to establish the sport at the Efata School for the Blind in Mthatha,” said Sensei Mthunzi Mapitiza who once mentored Magajana, Mapitiza credits Magajana whose contribution towards the development of Judo in South Africa was recognised and rewarded by the Minister of Sport, Fikile Mbalula. “I didn’t go to Sun City. I do know, however, that Magajana’s players give their best performances whenever given a chance,” said Mapitiza According to Mapitiza, it was not the first time that Magajana’s protége Ndyebo Lamani beat all opposition in one tournament and even came out tops against able-bodied competitors. “I get motivation from the love these children have of the sport even though they come from disadvantaged communities. “I’d like to thank current Judo SA president Themba Hlasho, Sensei Mthunzi Mapitiza, sensei Sipho Tyatya and my ever-supportive parents Zamumzi (Mzala) and Nomathamsanqa ‘Mamtshawe’ Magajana as well as my wife Thembisa and sister Nozuko Mabhala,” said Magajana.

NUBS earns hard-fought win over GB SELBY MADIKANE NJOLI United Brothers (NUBS) had to dig deep to earn a hard fought 1-0 victory over Golden Brothers during their Zakhele Football Association (ZAFA) Premier League clash that took place at Wolfson Stadium on Sunday. The game was evenly balanced as both sides played running football. NUBS striker Luzuko Dzuyi Hambaze created some chances but GB goalkeeper Lukhanyiso Ntshokoma stopped him. GB midfielder, Thandile Spanish Mtukwini, and Melikhaya Macaleni were the main catalysts for their side. NUBS skipper, Lonwabo Shupi Jacobs, and Bulelani Gqobo played their hearts out. Jacobs led by example as he scored NUBS’ winning goal in the 23th minute. GB were fired up in the second half. Macaleni unleashed a thunderous shot that was saved by NUBS goalkeeper Yandile Sticks Fani in a one-on-one situation. Paloza Manengele who came on as substitute also added value to GB but Fani was very stubborn under NUBS’ goalposts. NUBS super substitute Vuyolwethu Klaas delivered a perfect pass to Raymond Maklein who kicked a low, tame shot that
was dealt with easily by Ntshokoma. GB could have scored an equaliser after Macaleni failed to deal with Manengele’s cross. GB defender Mavuso Marambana was the most outstanding player who was solid down the left side of the field throughout the entire 90 minutes. Seven United won soft points after BUBS failed to honour their game. Dynamos cemented their position at the top of ZAFA Premier League table as they humiliated Black Eagles 5-0. Young Professionals managed to defeat Continental Express 2-1 in their tough game. Brazil Brothers were awarded soft points over Major Stars. Real Stars played to a 1-1 draw against City All Stars. Eleven Angels produced and an outstanding performance in their 1-0 triumph over the tough United Comrades. In their bid to avoid relegation, Ghetto Eleven defeated United Brothers 3-2 in an enterprising clash. NUBS star wing Vuyolwethu Jali Klaas chases Golden Brothers wingback Mavuso Maramba na. The team from the Western Cape started strongly.Their hard work paid dividends when the referee awarded them the first penalty of the game, but WP fly-half Kirsten Conrad failed to come up with three points. In a brilliant move, the home-side’s centre, Vuyiswa Skosana, penetrated the WP backline, but was tackled by WP skipper Tamsyn Nuttley only metres before the scoring line. EP, however, soon broke the ice when their fly-half Raylene Noubos kicked a penalty to put her side 3-0 in the lead. EP showed their fighting spirit when their left wing Unathi Mali scored the first try of the game following a beautiful run by Noubos.
HL WP decreased their deficit to 8-5 after their lock forward Unathi Catshulwa scored their first try. EP kept on showing aggression as they kept the visitors in their territory. Centre Rivonia Lesley scored a try for EP which was converted by Noubos to increase their lead to 15-5. EP flank forward, Aseza Amarula Hele, who had a storming game, scored her try in the corner of the scoring line, with the score increasing to 20-5. A try by Selladine Petersen reduced WP’s deficit to 20-10. The home-side’s number 8, Thandeka Fani, broke through the WP forwards and sent a long pass to Unathi Mali whose second try put EP 25-10 in front. EP wing Vuyiswa Skosana scored her side’s last try that was converted by skipper Siphosethu Pinipini Mtshinga to put them 32-10 in the lead. WP’s industrious lock Celeste Adonis scored their last try that was converted by Zintle Mkhosana. The home-side won 32-17.

Kwaru RFC draws with St Marks RFC SELBY MADIKANE KWARU RFC held St Marks RFC to a 19-19 draw in their EP Rugby GC Shield Cup League game at Dan Qeqe Stadium on Saturday. Kwaru put pressure on Saints from the word go. Kwaru was awarded a penalty which their fly-half, Sizwe Mamoti, kicked over the poles to put his side 3-0 in front. Shortly after the first penalty, Kwaru increased their lead to 6-0 after Mamoti kicked a second penalty over the poles. Saints replied with a penalty that was successfully taken by No 10 Nathan Fick, with the scoreline being 6-3. Kwaru were forced to make a technical change when Mamoti sustained a leg injury and had to be replaced by Xola Jacobs. Fick kicked a penalty that levelled matters 6-6. Fick failed twice when he missed two easy penalties. Kwaru scrumhalf Mzukisi Nontyi took a
long range penalty kick that put his side 9-6 ahead. Nontyi intercepted the pass and he scored the first try of the game under the poles. Nontyi kicked the conversion increasing Kwaru’s lead to 16-6. Saints came back strongly and as a result their right wing Jonathan Klein scored a try in the corner of the scoring line reducing Saints’ deficit to 16-13. The home side went to the break in search of their second try but Saints’ defence was very solid. Saints decided to change the kicker following the poor performance by Fick, pinning their hopes on Remo Bruinders. Nontyi came up with a second half penalty that he took 10 metres from the centre in the territory of their counterparts, with Kwaru leading 19-13. Bruinders kicked two penalties that made the final score 19-all. In the Reserves Section, Kwaru went down 22-3 to St Marks.

SUBS sink Strikers SELBY MADIKANE SWARTKOPSVALLEY United Brothers (SUBS) drubbed Real Strikers 4-2 in their Motherwell Football Association Build It Premier League clash at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Saturday.
Real Strikers’ hardworking, diminutive midfielder, Simphiwe Piko, is watched by a SUBS player. PHOTO:SELBY MADIKANE
Strikers looked as if they would win the game as they took the game to SUBS. Simphiwe Piko Thabiso Minana and Zolani Mofu combined well in the midfield of Strikers. Following Strikers’ hard work, Mpumelelo Boltina registered his side’s opening goal in the 29th minute. SUBS, whose midfielders patiently built good moves, made things happen for their side in the 39th minute when Ludwe Sonjica replied with SUBS’ opening goal. SUBS increased their lead to 2-1 after Nande Ndeya’s goal in the 50th minute. Strikers’ central defender Thulani Table Motloung played an instrumental role for his side’s equalising goal that was banged in by Ayabonga Moss in the 55th minute. SUBS front duo Sakhumzi Moyikwa and
Yamkela Va kept on tormenting Strikers’ defenders. Sonjica came up with his second goal in the 70th minute. Ndeya shattered the hopes of Strikers to secure a draw after he put the ball in the back of Strikers’ net in the 86th minute. Crystal Palace’s loyal supporters were taken aback when their side went down 1-0 to Manchester FC after one of their players conceded an own goal. Tomorrow Stars were given soft points because their opponents, Royal Bucks, failed to honour their game.

All Stars lose on home turf SELBY MADIKANE ZWIDE All Stars failed to secure maximum three points when they went down 1-0 to PE United during their SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay Women’s Regional League match that took place at Zwide Stadium on Sunday. The game did not bring any excitement because both sides made some silly mistakes at crucial times. United were the only ones to make their intentions clear with the home-side’s striking force looking jittery. United came up with their opening goal that was scored courtesy of Anelisa Hlobo. All Stars midfielder Sihle Cilayi tried in vain to search for an equalising goal, but her big striker Mlumbi Lungiswa was harmless in front of the goals. The visitors went to the break leading 1-0. United’s right wing, Charmaine Royi, produced some brilliant solo runs but her crosses lacked some quality. Zime Lloyd was nearly rewarded with a goal but United’s goalkeeper Sinesipho Saki was equal to the task. Stars’ goalkeeper Yoliswa Bisha was the busier of the two. United midfielder Lerato Nontshinga came close to scoring a goal, but goalkeeper Bisha showed her class in that one-on-one situation. All Stars defender Lesira Kakole also saved her side from being embarrassed by United. Sinesipho Mentjies also marshalled her defence for United. The technical performance of the sides
leaves a lot to be desired and the head coaches need go back to the drawing board. Hungry Lions, who had been leading the pack, saw themselves losing 2-1 to the new comers Bay Tigers. Young Brothers, who have overtaken Lions, shared a 2-2 draw with Manchester City B Team. While Brothers and Lions both have 22 league points, Brothers are the new log leaders because they have a better goal difference than the erstwhile log leaders. Shining Stars B Team, who are in the third position of the league table, demolished Everton 8-0. Fans saw an enthralling game in which Real Crusaders collected three maximum points when they defeated the tail enders Mighty Heroes 1-0.
Crusaders exerted immense pressure but Heroes showed that they had fight in them. Crusaders’ long-awaited spectacular goal that sent spectators into raptures was scored late in the second half. Crusaders are on the fifth position of the league table.
