Nurse publishes Setwork book

NCEBA DLADLA

A

PORT Elizabeth professional nurse Nompumezo Buzani has published two Drama books in isiXhosa, one of which has been prescribed by the Department of Education in the Eastern Cape for Grade 10 learners from next year.

An elated Buzani (54) of KwaDwesi thanks God for this success, after many years of acting, writing and directing stage dramas and films as well as submitting book manuscripts without success. Her books “Imida” (Frontiers) and “Hamba nam, ndipheleke” (Come, go with me) were published this year by Vivlia Publishers and Centre for the Book Publishers. She was born and

bred in Alice as the daughter of a late Ciskei activist who was arrested for his activism. This mother of four, who is widowed, had been involved in writing since childhood. “I got inspiration from my late teacher Mxolisi Joe Matyila who was also a composer,” reminisced Buzani who first wrote a radio drama “Ukuba ubusazi” which was rejected by the then Radio Xhosa, allegedly because of its political connotations, while she denied she had any political agenda writing what she thought was a reflection of what she saw in the Ciskei Government. A stage drama “Unonyembezi” followed but when Buzani passed matric, she took up nursing, thinking that the writing bug was gone. “I got married in 1985. I came to Port Elizabeth but when my husband

(Zola Buzani) died 10 years later, I went back to arts. The interest in PE at the time, however, was in poetry,” remembered Buzani who, through the assistance of poets like Mzi Mahola crafted her poetic artistry. Buzani put drama on hold and shone in this new genre, publishing in poetry magazines like Kotaz. This, she said, gave her a breakthrough to meet UCT lecturer Dr Abner Nyamende who facilitated her featuring in the book “Voices of Africa” in which she contributed two poems. “However, I always wanted to develop my drama and I remember taking my work to international stage and film actor Winston Ntshona to critique it,” Buzani said, adding that it was good advice like Dr Ntshona’s that kept her glowing and hopeful for success. PE Opera House Managing Director Monde Ngonyama also played a role in developing Buzani’s arts. She said, “I took part in Monde’s stage plays as an actor and we went to the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown in 2008 and 2009. This was in order to fine-tune my writing skills.” Not only that, but Buzani, who entered the Iphulo Drama Festival, also took part and won an award in the Bay Film Festival in 2010. At this stage, she said, she had already started Imida, a story about former exiles who were trained in Guerilla Warfare. Buzani said she was elated when South Africans told their own stories and in their own languages. “Government must look after budding writers. There is immense talent out there and many stories to be told,” Buzani said.

VIP’s roll up sleeves to Stop Hunger Now NCEBA DLADLA MANY dignitaries, including Nelson Mandela’s grandson, Chief Mandla Mandela and his wife Nosekeni Rabia-Mandela, as well as the premier of the Eastern Cape, Phumulo Masualle, took part on Saturday in the launch of the Sun International and Stop Hunger Now South Africa challenge, Follow the Sun. The initiative, which was aimed at packing meals for hungry children, was held at the

Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment World. Other dignitaries who also rolled up their sleeves for charity at the launch were Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Danny Jordaan, the Global Mandela Day Ambassador for Stop Hunger Now, Siba Mtongana and Die Burger/Boardwalk Mr PE Nicholas Affat. This is a seven-day challenge that includes government officials, members of the church fraternity, businesses and individuals to commemorate the 67 minutes International Mandela Day. “This is not the day for speeches. Utata Nelson Mandela rolled up his sleeves and worked. We must do our part,” said Premier Masualle, who was joined by Social Development and Health MECs Nancy Sihlwayi and Dr Phumza Dyantyi respectively, in the group that packed 45 000 meals in 67 minutes. Chief Mandla Mandela said it was a privilege and an honour for him to be involved in something that was dear to “the man I called my grandfather, who spent 67 years of his life making the world a better place for all.” To mayor Jordaan, the challenge was the start of a commitment to doing good for the less fortunate in honour of Madiba. Eastern Cape-born South African celebrity Chef Sibahle Mtongana, popularly known as Siba Mtongana, the host of the Food Network show Siba’s Table, relayed how important it was for her to be part of the initiative to feed the hungry.

Programme to support schools starts in earnest INDABA REPORTER THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, led by the mayoral committee, decided last year to start an initiative under its expanded public works programme (EPWP) that was aimed at supporting schools in the city. About 330 EPWP participants were recruited and deployed across the city and R4.7-million from the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro EPWP 2015/16 grant allocation was set aside for the NMBM EPWP nonteaching support staff initiative. Owing to the high number of schools that submitted requests for assistance during the planning phase of the project, the national Department of Public Works was approached and lobbied to partner the initiative. “I am extremely happy to highlight on behalf of the municipality’s ANC-led council that we have fulfilled the promise that was made last year on December 11

NCEBA DLADLA THE dearth of school sport, recreation, arts and cultural activities was a major concern for young KwaNobuhle people, who decided to do something about it. The chairperson of Luthandolwethu, a nonprofit organisation working in Ward 44, Nzwana Peyi, said they had formed the NPO in 2012 because of what they had been witnessing in township schools– a lack of sports action. Peyi said they had been concerned because school sport encouraged community sport. Those children who played sport at school were more likely to continue playing for community clubs. He said they had since been encouraging schools to engage in sport, arts and cultural activities and were thinking of partnering with the Department of Education to formalise working relations. “We have a potential partnership with the

Department of Education to formalise and concretise working relations in order to make sure that every primary school takes part in sport,” he said, adding that their interest was with schools from the disadvantaged backgrounds who struggled for facilities and sports equipment. Peyi said sport opened up opportunities for pupils who might not be successful academically. “We notice that there is continuity for those who play sport at school. They also develop an interest in playing for their local clubs, and in that way we cut down on idle youth with idle minds,” he said. Uthandolwathu NPO treasurer Sinethemba Xotyeni said they were hoping to meet Social Development MEC Nancy Sihlwayi to present their programme in order to get funding. “Through government support we could do more to encourage young people to think big and keep their bodies healthy through sport,” said Xotyeni.

during the time of the project launch at the Helenvale Resources Centre – that of supporting more than 186 schools, creation of 330 work opportunities and training of participants,” mayor Danny Jordaan said. He said some of the participants had been trained in the following: ) Office administrative skills with NMMU; ) Computer training with Eagle Computer Training Centre; ) Report and business writing and presentation skills with Khanyisela; and ) Health and safety, first aid, firefighting’ chainsaw use with Falcon & BLS Medical. “In line with our agreement with the Department of Public Works that started July 1, the EPWP schools support programme will be taken over by the department through its agent, Independent Development Trust (IDT). Officials from the trust are finalising the roll-out plan,” Jordaan said.

MANDELA DAY - 18 JULY

Mandela Day celebrated in Bay Townships NCEBA DLADLA GOVERNMENT Departments and institutions including schools spent their 67 minutes for Mandela doing good for the needy as well as cleaning their environment. Kwazakele SAPS hosted a Soup Day,

thanks to a donation by SAPS personnel. They also received donations from Daku Spar, Albany, Sasko and Foreign Nationals living in the Kwazakele SAPS policing precinct. More than 1000 people were served with bread and soup while elderly gogos and children received a beanie.

Youth discuss issues with MEC NCEBA DLADLA SOCIAL Development MEC Nancy Sihlwayi engaged Nelson Mandela Bay youth in a dialogue where the young people spoke about issues that negatively affected their growth and development. Last Friday’s meeting at the Govan Mbeki Multi-Purpose Centre in Port Elizabeth, themed “Youth Moving South Africa Forward”, gave the youth an opportunity to discuss ills like teenage pregnancy, substance abuse and dysfunctional families, among other topics. The issue of rampant unemployment and skills shortage affecting young people were also high on the agenda. Some of the groups present were already organised and hoping to present their interesting programmes to the MEC. “The government has established sectors that are vulnerable and budgeted for them,” Sihlwayi said. “All government departments are working together on this and the Social Development Department is doing its part having identified the youth as the most vulnerable and neglected sector in the province.

“We told all eight of our districts to engage in a dialogue that is aimed at finding out what the problem areas are and what young people think are solutions to those problems in order for all of us to work together in creating those solutions,” Sihlwayi said. While unemployment, the skills shortage and qualified people lacking employment were a challenge, her department was involved in five programmes aimed at assisting young people. Those were national youth service, bursaries, internships, learnerships and projects for people with business ideas. Motherwell’s Kuyasa Cultural Group were the recipients of R202 623 from the MEC as they had succeeded in showing her department what they were doing in creating an enabling environment for the youth of Motherwell to thrive through their arts and cultural practices, including poetry, song and dance. “We are very happy to have been recognised by the MEC and we will use the money wisely by improving our arts and look,” said Kuyasa chairperson Zizo Yonela Mlibali (24), who prides herself on taking good care of herself as a young woman, thanks to the teachings of her club.

Kwazakhele residents enjoyed a cup of soup with bread.

After 10 years of suffering, we are now happily married. For 10 years I lived in an abusive marriage. However, after reading & listening to various testimonials about DIBA in newspapers, magazines and on radio, I visited him. I was shocked when he told me accurately all my past & present problems & revealed that my husband was involved in a relationship with another lady. He showed me the lady “live in a mirror”. DIBA helped separate that lady from my husband, he also made my enemies & in-laws come & confess all the bad things they have done to my family. Today we are happy together. I highly recommend him to those suffering a similar fate as mine. TO GET SOLUTIONS FOR FINACIAL, CHILDREN, PROPERTY, COURT CASES, BUSINESS, LOVE HEALTH, JOBS, FAMILY PROBLEMS. DIBA ALSO GIVES SUGGESTIONS FOR ANY TYE OF PERSONAL PROBLEMS.

Topping the bill bank-rolled by BuildIt is a six round Lightweight bout between KwaZulu Natal recruit Sanele “Tornado” Msimang who fights out of Nelson Mandela Bay against Cape Town’s Bongani Mbiko. The tournament has got all the ingredients of true development boxing Nkebe believes would take Mandela Bay to stardom in the not too distant future. After engaging in hard-fought national title fights recently, Eastern Cape Junior Welterweight Champion Lungisa “Naughty” Jikani and Welterweight contender Anelisa “Sugar

Ray” Gungqisa will engage Bulelani Rooibaard of Kirkwood and Siphenathi Qampi of Cape Town over eight and six rounds respectively, in what Nkebe believes are stiff tests to keep the two pugilists active. Nkebe thanked Build It for committing to support the development of fisticuffs adding that he was hoping more would come from it and that champions would be produced through the initiative. “Our focus is to produce credible champions. We need to revive boxing in the Nelson Mandela Metro and believe Silindokuhe Boxing Promotions is on the right track,” he said. The Mbiko-Zungu fight is expected to produce fireworks. In another exciting warm-up fight, EC Super-middleweight champion Lesley Hope will be facing a stiff test against Myolisi Xayo (CT) over four-rounds while in an interesting heavyweight bout, debutantes Juan-Pierre

Pretorius squares off against Unathi Ndlebe. Thando Mahlahla will fight against Sonwabo Twatwa while in the female bout, former SA female Lightweight champion Nomampondomise Xhotyeni of KwaNobuhle will lock horns with Motherwell’s Sandisiwe Gxogxo to prove that the former’s win in their first encounter was not a fluke. The first bout starts at 2pm. Tickets are available at Build It stores in Motherwell, KwaNobuhle, Stanford Road, Hunters and Kirkwood at R40 while R50 will be payable at the door.

Ending their historic best in the league last season, sixth on the log standing and therefore qualifying for the Top Eight Competition, the Nelson Mandela Bay Premier Soccer League (PSL) outfit, Chippa United proved just how serious they were when they revealed their new signings which included relatively young players for depth and better agility. In a bid to strengthen the side, Dan “Dance” Malesela went on a recruitment drive for what he termed was a bunch of young and excited players who were eager to make a name for themselves and contribute to the team’s success. The new players included Sherwin Keith Bailey, Bulumko Ceki, Xolani Mdaki, Vusumzi Mncube, Sivuiwe Mdlinzo, Strydom Wambi, Paseka Maku, Phetolo Sekome and Veeplaas born Siphesihle Stuurman among other play-

ers. Executive Chairperson Sivuyile “Chippa” Mpengesi has not only opened his chequebook, but has also created an environment for the team to succeed. He said, “I trust the Head Coach and his decisions. If the new players could do the same, they could see themselves earning their stripes in the highly competitive league and earning big salaries.” Ndulula, however, was the only senior player unveiled with the young recruits from the team’s junior structures and National First Division teams while Masuku who was deemed surplus by new Pirates head coach Muhsin Ertugral was away with the U-23 National team preparing for the upcoming 2016 Rio Olympics. The Chilli Boys also unveiled Canterbury as their new technical sponsor. Signed a “fantastic” one season deal, pending the delivery on the field of play, the sponsor was set to establish a long lasting relationship with the enterprising Chilli Boys. The Canterbury apparel would be on sale in the sports shops including those in Mandela Bay for the benefit of the supporters, it was said.
