HE Nelson Mandela Bay municipality currently has no executive mayor or mayoral committee. The acting city manager, Johann Mettler, is the boss.

Mettler said on inquiry that once the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) certified

the outcome of an election, the new councillors would start working the next day.

“The certification took place on Saturday.

Therefore the metro has, since Sunday, no mayor or mayoral committee. The political executive committee has expired.

“What the municipality indeed has, are new councillors.”

Church leads women celebration with music and poetry NCEBA DLADLA ST JOHN’s Methodist Church in Central, Port Elizabeth celebrated the eve of the National Women’s Day in style with an innovative fundraising event dubbed “Out of the Box Experience” held at the Feathermarket Hall on Monday evening.

The event, which saw the mingling of art, poetry and gospel music was the initiative of woman activist, musician, poet and social commentator Lelethu Mahambehlala, better known in showbiz as PoeticSoul.

UWFM’s Nomonde Vakalisa takes the cue from women of the Bible who played their role in the Kingdom of God.

Billed were the darlings of South African gospel music Bethusile Mcinga, Dumi Mkokstad and other local stars like Mahambehlala who provided good music, poetry and drama (monologue).

“It was my way of giving back to the church.

I wanted to take the church to the community and that we celebrate our arts in giving back to God,” said Mahambehlala, adding that women should take their rightful place in society in honour of those women and struggle icons who marched against dompases on 9 August, 60 years ago.

REPORTER INSTEAD of sleeping late and watching TV all day, 800 of the Eastern Cape’s top performing Grade 12 learners recently gave up a week of their school holiday to take part in the Thuthuka development camp in Port Elizabeth and Mthatha.

This initiative, run by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) in partnership with the Eastern Cape Department of Education, culminated in two special award ceremonies where six learners were crowned the brightest maths, science and accounting learners in the province.

The province’s two Thuthuka Development Camps were held at the Sumcay Camping Centre in Despatch and Walter Sisulu University’s Mthatha Campus during the July school holidays.

The camps were marked not only by the enthusiasm of the attending learners, but by the dedication, sacrifice and infectious energy of the camp leaders.

These leaders were made up of Thuthuka Bursary Fund recipients currently undergoing their university studies across the country and other individuals from the education space that are passionate about youth development.

It is this passion and dedication to giving back that saw the camp leaders steer and inspire 800 independent and gifted young minds to seeing their full potential and beginning the work to fulfil it.

During the camps, learners from disadvantaged communities around the province received additional support in mathematics, communication, science, accounting, career guidance and life skills.

On the last day of each camp, the SAICA and the Eastern Cape Department of Education

“These week-long Thuthuka camps are important events as they combine tutorials in key subjects, together with career guidance and soft skills development such as responsible leadership, team work, etc., all of which are designed to help learners at the camps deal with the challenges that young people face today,” explains SAICA Project Director for Transformation, Lwando Bantom.

However, the real significance of these camps is seen, not only in the amount of confidence learners gain during the week, but also when you review the matric results of the learners who attend the camps, Bantom reveals.

This is because “our records indicate that many of the learners who attend these provincially-run camps each year make it onto the country’s top matric learner list.”

It is for this reason that these annual camps continue to have the support of the Eastern Cape Department of Education which, like SAICA, is actively working to improve the educational standards of maths, science and accounting for disadvantaged learners in the province.

“That’s a fantastic show! I enjoyed it,” said Christopher Frank (47) of Malabar.

It is still good. I enjoyed it like the first time,” said 62 year old Trevor Schroeder.

The elderly citizen added that he was reminded of his days when they enjoyed weddings and discos.

Municipal elections: Now it’s time for coalition talks ROSLYN BAATJIES WHILE the DA’s Athol Trollip did not want to comment over the weekend over the party’s coalition partners, there were plenty of rumours going around that the UDM’s leader in Nelson Mandela Bay, Mongameli Bobani, could be the new deputy mayor of the Metro.

The DA, which won 57 of the 120 seats in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro (NMBM) needs 4 for an outright majority.

The ANC has 50 seats, the EFF six and the UDM two, while COPE, the United Front, the Patriotic Alliance, the ACDP and the AIC each won one seat in Wednesday’s municipal elections.

“The discussions are taking place. I cannot say anything at this time,” Trollip said on Sunday.

Bobani was also not willing to say more than the fact that coalition discussions were handled at national level.

The United Front confirmed that the DA approached them on Friday with regard to a coalition in Nelson Mandela Bay metro.

Khusta Mtsila confirmed on Sunday, however, that not only the DA, but also the ANC have approached the United Front in this regard.

“With who we will be working together, will depend on the other party’s principles and policies.

“We serve a specific constituency and we cannot compromise on our policies and identity. An agreement with these parties must include this,” said Mtsila.

According to him the PA will hold a media conference this week over the coalition issue.

Trollip said on Friday to the media and on Saturday to DA supporters that they have been in discussions with the UDM (two seats) with regard to a coalition.

Bantu Holomisa, UDM-leader, confirmed on Thursday in Pretoria that Mmusi Maimane, DA leader, has approaced him as coalition partner.

Khwezi Ntshenyana, COPE leader in NMBM, also said coalition discussions take place at national level.

“We therefore have to wait from directives from our national leaders,” he said.

The ANC on Sunday did not react to questions about the party’s coalition discussions.

Spend four hours in a wheelchair, change a life AFTER 5 years, Spar Wheelchair Wednesday will have seen a total of 500 Wheelchairs handed over to needy people and in excess of R1.9m raised, for people living with disabilities.

The power of wheels is often under-appreciated. Daily people rely on wheels – two or four – for all kinds of mobility needs, but mostly for getting from A to B. But just imagine what it is like spending everyday reliant on a tool, like a wheelchair, that is completely central to one’s existence and the space and place challenges that come with it.

This exercise of imagination is the motive behind the Association for Persons with Physical Disabilities (APD) fundraising and awareness initiative, dubbed Spar Wheelchair Wednesday.

“The APD will continue to keep the idea simple but effective,” said Brian Bezuidenhout, APD Executive Director. “So we thought, what better way to raise awareness, funds and turn the tables on traditional thinking about people with physical disabilities than to give able bodied people some insight and perspective into our everyday lives.

“The method? Getting company heads, chief executives, and city leaders in general to pledge to spend four hours in a wheelchair every Wednesday in August. This way our leadership from the public and private sectors gains deeper insight into our obstacles and can provide opportunities at the same time.”

With over 100 000 people with disabilities living in Nelson Mandela Bay, this is a well-needed

perspective, added Bezuidenhout.

The APD aims to get 120 local high-flyers to come on board. These business and public sector participants each donate R5000 to take part in Spar Wheelchair Wednesday, and these donations will ultimately translate into 120 wheelchairs which will go to needy beneficiaries. The 5 years of the initiative’s existence will see a total of 500 needy people receiving wheelchairs.

“One of the major factors that prohibit persons with disabilities from integrating and functioning normally within society is the issue of reasonable accommodation,” Bezuidenhout explained. “It is to this end that we have devised this awareness campaign. The SPAR Wheelchair Wednesday initiative will once again challenge the mindset of the decision-makers within society and help to bring about an unprecedented paradigm shift in the way persons with disabilities are treated.”

The initiative has the support of naming sponsor SPAR, which has contributed “extensively” to the campaign. “It is with much gratitude that we acknowledge the financial assistance of SPAR for their continued assistance in sustaining the project. We also acknowledge the assistance of our other sponsors who have come on board,” added Bezuidenhout.

August 10, being week 1 of the campaign, will see 25 eager participants gather at the a Spar store for the start of their 4-hour challenge. “To ensure that the participants get the maximum effect we will be strapping their feet together,” said Bezuidenhout.

“From what we’ve been seeing during the

districts’ finalists, we can safely say that Eastern Cape women farmers have showed great potential,” said Sicwetsha, adding however, that much still needed to be done.

Early in the day, according to Sicwetsha, female farmers will be taken through a training programme focusing on financial literacy, book keeping, financial management, tax systems, labour relations and more to help them improve the performance of their businesses.

New coffee shop gives baristas a chance REPORTER

could be a gateway for me to someday have my own business – perhaps owning my own coffee shop.”

Brewing the perfect coffee was not something Ntunte anticipated growing up.

“Here I am. I’m proudly a barista,” she said. “My favourite coffee to make is a flat white. It’s where I can express the love that I have for coffee, and make art [in the foam].”

Ntunte said her family was excited about her prospects with a major national brand.

“They are very excited because vide e caffè is a major brand. My friends are always asking me questions, and I’m teaching them about coffee,” she said.

Sonwabo said her involvement with Ubuntu had come thanks to a recommendation from a friend.

“This training has been addictive. At first I didn’t know much about coffee, but as we trained it was great fun and I have learned a lot,” she said.

Baywest Mall marketing manager Chris Hutchings said the vide e caffè brand was a perfect fit for the mall.

“The franchise vide e caffè is synonymous with good coffee, a great atmosphere and smiling, energised baristas. It’s something that is a natural fit for the Baywest family,” he said.

“It is an honour for Baywest to be able to give a platform to vital community-minded organisations such as Ubuntu, which unearth the talent in their students, who otherwise might not have been given the opportunity to study.”

THE rise of a coffee culture in South Africa has seen the proliferation of popular coffee outlets such as vide e caffè, which recently opened its second store in Port Elizabeth, at Baywest Mall.

Among the energetic baristas at the new vide e caffè are Pumlani Notshulwana (23), Zipozetu Ntunte (19) and Siyamthanda Sonwabo (18), who have something in common – they were trained by non-profit organisation Ubuntu Education Fund.

The organisation’s holistic approach to health, education and psychosocial support aims to uplift individuals who come from disadvantaged backgrounds.

According to the organisation, its students progress academically at twice the rate of their peers and are almost 50% more likely to graduate from secondary school than their classmates.

Notshulwana, Ntunte and Sonwabo were trained under the organisation’s Ubuntu Pathways job readiness programme, which was launched in 2013.

“I never imagined that I would be a barista,” said Notshulwana. “I got to hear of the Ubuntu training programme through my grandmother. She had been helped by the organisation when my older sister got sick.”

“Growing up, I never knew what a barista was, but as we underwent training, it became my passion,” said Notshulwana.

“It was on May 1, 2006, that a new dawn began when Zonke Spar, which has now grown into the Zonke Super Spar, opened for trading in Motherwell,” owner Kevin Klette said.

While the business is, by its very nature, aimed at making a profit, the company had done more than its fair share in the eradication of poverty in the area by employing residents of Motherwell and surrounding areas.

“Employment is offered to unskilled young people from various backgrounds.

Through our Spar training interventions we have seen many young people with a lot of potential developing. Some are now in key positions in the company,” he said.

The business had, however, not been without challenges, Klette said.

They had been faced with adverse situations such as a fire in 2008 and incidents

of armed robberies, which has resulted in the death of an employee and the injury of another.

He said the company and its employees had been working with members of the community, gaining strength day by day to continue serving the community of Motherwell.

“Today we mark the 10th year in the community and we are so proud of that!

We have achieved a lot,” he said.

Among these achievements are being crowned Training Store of the Year for three consecutive years (2009 to 2011) and the Most Improved Store in 2012.

“This year we have hosted graduates for the Workplace Skills Programme in conjunction with W&RSETA. “We have also engaged in many charity activities in all areas – sports, education, the elderly – to name a few.

Klette said he humbly thanked loyal customers for keeping them in business all these years. He also thanked the Spar management and the dedicated team of employees.

ANIKA DE BEER A LOCAL struggling artist recently won the first ever PeGotBars Rapping Competition that was held on Facebook.

Scott Geduld, also known as ScottyG (19), is now a recognised artist owing to a Facebook competition hosted by music producer, Hein Bosman.

Bosman first announced the competition on May 16 on his Facebook page, stating that the aim is to give exposure to Port Elizabeth talent.

He produced two beats for the competition. The contestants had to choose between them and record a rap in Bosman’s studio.

Entry cost R120, which included one hour of recording time.

The winner of the competition got to release their rap song as their own, along with another to be produced and recorded by Bosman.

On June 29, all submissions were uploaded to Facebook and the voting process began.

‘Fantastic’ feast for the eyes now open REPORTER ART lovers can enjoy a visual art treat with the “Fantastic” art exhibition at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s Bird Street Art Gallery.

The exhibition, hosted by the NMMU Department of Visual Arts in conjunction with the University of Cape Town’s Michaelis Art Gallery, is running until August 18.

Curated by art historian, Dr Nomusa Makhubu, and fine artist, Nkule Mabaso, the exhibition features work by artists such as Pamela Phatsimo Sunstrum, Zina Saro-Wiwa, Aida Muluneh and Dineo Bobape.

With terms such as ‘supernatural’, ‘magic’ and ‘fetish’, the visual arts showcase brings together a diverse mix of African artists using photography, illustration, animation and video to illustrate the fantastic.

NMMU art and design principal lecturer Mary Duker said, “The exhibition, Fantastic, seeks to reignite critical thought about the fantastic

and considers it to be one of the crucial ways of comprehending the contemporary complexity in which uneven international economic and cultural relations contribute to the bizarre realities of contemporary life.

“Drawing inspiration from writers such as Ben Okri, this exhibition brings together contemporary artwork that has engaged with the fantastic as a concept that must be used discursively.”

Red Location Art Gallery director, Uthando Budaza, opened the exhibition.

The idea behind the exhibition stems from Dr Makhubu’s doctoral research, with work selected from artists who explore the realm of the fantastic in their art. Dr Makhubu will be in town on August 10 and will conduct a public walkabout of the exhibition.

The exhibition is open on weekdays between 9:30am and 3:30pm.

THE proverbial statement that “a prophet is not recognised at home” rings true for national draughts champion Thembinkosi Hambiyana.

Hambiyana (43) of Motherwell has won Gauteng colours and the National Draughts Federation Championship in his many years of involvement in the mind game.

He says he has beaten the best in the game, but little of his involvement is known in Nelson Mandela Bay. “I am well known in Gauteng because the sport is huge that side.”

He said he had left PE in 1995 to take part in draughts championships in Gauteng and had been impressed with the manner in which the sport was held in high regard in the city of gold.

“Luckily I have relatives who stayed in Dobsonville. I asked if I could stay with them to pursue my dream of being a national champion in the sport, and they agreed,” Hambiyana said.

His immense understanding of the game and its rules belies his claim to have left school at eMsengeni Primary in Zwide.

“I didn’t like school. I spent most of the time playing draughts. I now realise the huge mistake that I made, so I want to go back to schools to teach the game to the children because it can help them think fast to solve problems,” said Hambiyana.

He reads books on the game and talks freely about trunks, variations and alphabets and moves like Cross, Dundee, Glasgow and Will of the Wisp.

Asked whether he was aware of the existence of the Nelson Mandela Bay Draughts Association, Hambiyana said he is working with the structure.

“I took some of the draughtboards they received from the metro municipality and started teaching at a few schools,” he said.

A fitness fanatic, Hambiyana spends his free time running. He has already taken part in six Comrades Marathons and has an equal number of silver medals to show for it.

“I love sports,” he said.

Ncedo Senior Secondary wins SAFA Motherwell Schools Kay Motsepe eliminations SELBY MADIKANE NCEDO Senior Secondary School (SSS) will represent SAFA Motherwell Schools in the SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay School Kay Motsepe regional eliminations after they thumped their neighbours, Mfesane SSS, 5-1 in the finals that were played at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Friday.

Ncedo SSS showed that they meant business when they drubbed Soqhayisa SSS 3-1 in the semi-finals.

It was a do-or-die clash when Mfesane SSS won 6-5 on a sudden death call over Vulumzi SSS. Ncedo SSS applied immense pressure to Mfesane SSS from the word go in the finals.

The referee failed to give a red card to a Mfesane SSS defender, but Ncedo SSS scored from a penalty spot courtesy of Xhantilomzi Meki.

Sakhekile Guzuba, of Ncedo SSS, scored the second goal after he delivered a thunderous shot. Guzuba then scored his second goal which increased Ncedo’s lead to 3-0.

Meki scored his second goal to put Ncedo SSS 4-0 ahead.

The job was not yet completed as Thabo Manyathi sent a long range volley that beat Mfesane SSS goalkeeper, who was off his goal line.

Ncedo SSS lead 5-0 for a while until Mfesane SSS left footed talented player, Aviwe Vani, scored his school’s spectacular consolation goal.

FOUR teams organised a juniors challenge that pulled many children in to watch their sides taking each other on at the Motherwell NU 9 Stadium B Field on Saturday.

The challenge was organised by Tomorrow Stars, Channel Porto, Young Madrid and the Golden Killers and was played by the u/13 and u/15 teams.

It was decided according to a straight knockout system. The future stars played their hearts out, and kept the fans on their feet.

In the u/13 semi-finals, Tomorrow Stars defeated Young Madrid 2-1, while Channel

GOOD Samaritans came to the rescue of the Elufefeni Primary School girls’ soccer team when they donated 11 pairs of soccer boots and shin guards to them last Wednesday.

The generous donation was made possible by two bus transporters of learners – Zolisa Ndziba (who owns Zoe Ndzuba Bus) and Songezo Mpanda.

Ndziba and Mpanda transport the Elufefeni learners who reside in Motherwell NU 11, NU 12, NU 29 and NU 30, to and from the school on a daily basis.

Elufefeni Sport Manager and Soccer Coach, Liziwe Kate, told the Indaba Express that she askedthe two bus

owners to sponsor some soccer boots for her girls’ U/13 team.

Kate said, “I explained to the two gentlemen that our girls who play soccer did not have boots. I told them that these girls have to borrow boots from the boys. Sometimes they kick the ball with their school shoes or bare feet. I am very proud that these girls will be able to wear boots when they are playing.

“The donation has boosted the morale of my girls’ team. It has attracted more girls to play soccer. The two bus owners have added value to our school. The two gentlemen are ploughing back into the community. I am very thankful to them,” said Kate.

Spectacular basketball games played SELBY MADIKANE THE Nelson Mandela Bay Basketball Association (NMBBA) hosted spectacular league games at Raymond Mhlaba Indoor Sport Centre in Motherwell NU 4 on Sunday.

The PE Comets B was given soft points after the New Brighton Knights failed to honour their game.

The NMMU Madibaz showed their fighting spirit when they demolished the Expandables 74-47.

It was a do-or-die clash when the PE Comets overcame the Spartans 82-76.

In a women’s game, the NMMU Madibaz seemed to have run short of Madibaz magic when they went down 47-17 to the Rhodes Titans.

The PE Comets secured a well-deserved 35-23 win against the NMMU Madibaz.

His two charges at Caiph Camp, the South African (SA) Female Junior Lightweight champion Nozipho Bell and Masixole Botile, a middleweight pugilist are booked to fight on the same date, Saturday 27 August in East London and Johannesburg, respectively.

Bell, who is the only national boxing champion in Nelson Mandela Bay currently, will put her title on the line against mandatory challenger Rushda Mallick of the Western Cape over 10 rounds.

Botile, who has been dropped in the Top 10 ratings in the Supermiddleweight divi-

sion, will square off with Gauteng’s 4th ranked SA contender Barend van Rooyen over eight rounds.

“We are double booked but because the two fights are that important for my two boxers we’ll take both of them,” said Ntante.

Botile, with 13 fights – four wins all by Knock Out and nine losses – lost on points to East London’s Yanga Pethani in a contest for the vacant Eastern Cape Middleweight title in his last fight. He must beat van Rooyen, a veteran of 27 fights, who turned professional in 1998.

Van Rooyen, with 22 wins (2KOs), four losses and a single draw lost against SA Middleweight champion Christopher Buthelezi in his last fight.

Palace draws with SUBS SELBY MADIKANE IT was a do-or-die clash when Crystal Palace shared a 1-1 draw with SUBS during their Motherwell Football Association (MOFA) Build It Premier League clash at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Saturday.

The SUBS lanky striker, Athenkosi Mpati, was tightly marked by Palace’s young defender, Thamsanqa Smith.

Smith, who was the man of the match, also closed SUBS’ experienced Lwando Nkohla on many occasions.

Palace goalkeeper, Luvuyo Bavuma, pulled a brilliant save from a powerful close range header by Mpati.

Aces make history after 38 years

GOLDEN Aces made history when they won the Zwide Football Association (ZWIFA) Ntando Tours and the Transport Premier League Cup for the first time since their inception 38 years ago.

Aces came to the game with guns blazing and defeated their hoodoo team, Real Crusaders, 3-0 in their deciding game.

The side that exerted pressure on Aces was Zwide Pirates who overcame Swartkops United 3-0.

Pirates became the log leaders for 90 minutes, but their hopes of winning the prestigious league trophy were dashed by Aces.

In the 15th minute Aces’ left wing, Sinethemba Kilibe, sent a nifty cross to Givemore Manuella whose shot beat the Saders goalkeeper, Khanyiso Majikela.

Saders took the game to Aces, but they could not beat Aces’ seasoned goalkeeper, Thando Barthez Mthimkhulu.

In the 40th minute Aces increased their lead to 2-0 when Siyabonga July drove home a powerful header that beat Majikela.

Saders were nearly rewarded with a shot after Maliviwe Msila’s shot from the set piece was parried by Mthimkhulu in the 50th minute.

Kilibe scored a beautiful goal in the 70th minute after he noticed that Majikela was off his line. Saders finished the game with 10 men following a red card that was given to Songezo

Mpambani in the 75th minute.

Aces Head Coach, Ndumiso Jomo Jaji, was visibly elated with his team who have been making their preparations for this win since December 28 in 2015.

Jaji said, “We started early with our preparations. Our boys did us proud. Our victory is attributed to discipline, dedication and determination. These players have indeed made history.

Our club has never won any league trophy since it was established in 1978. Our side deserves an accolade because they worked very hard to win a most important trophy.

“I want to thank the entire club supporters for supporting the boys. We have quality players who will represent ZWIFA during SAFA NMB Regional League Promotional Playoffs.”

Aces experienced player, Mcebisi Gerald Mdwayi, who played a most phenomenal role towards his side’s success, said that they knew as players that their mandate was to win a league trophy. Mdwayi said, “We told ourselves that we should win a league title. We worked very hard despite some difficulties here and there. I am overwhelmed that we have accomplished our mission.”

Umzobomvu takes honours SELBY MADIKANE RED City, which is affectionately called Umzobomvu, took the honours when they defeated PE Sundowns 2-1 in the New Brighton Football Association (NEBFA) Iron Bridge Events One Day Tournament finals at New Brighton Oval on Sunday.

Sundowns, tipped as hot favourites, were

ruthless when they walloped Friendly City 5-1 in the semi-finals.

Fans saw an enthralling semi-finals game when Umzobomvu beat the gallant Stinging Bees 2-0 in a hard-earned victory.

City never had a chance to collect any silverware, because their opponents, Sundowns, came in with their guns blazing in the semi-finals.

City showed the fans that they were one of

the oldest sides in the Eastern Cape that had made their mark in the soccer fraternity.

City beat the high-riding Sundowns 2-1. The fans were treated to football of a high standard from the start to the last minute of the game.

Umzobomvu scooped the first prize of R10 000 while Sundowns went home with R5 000. The losing semi-finalists Friendly City and Stinging Bees received R2 500 each.
