Holomisa explains coalition talks V NCEBA DLADLA

OTERS are waiting to see how political parties will decide on coalitions after the local government elections did not see an outright winner in Nelson Mandela Bay.

UDM president Bantu Holomisa was in the metro at the weekend to consult members of his party and supporters. “I am here to thank voters for giving us a

mandate to represent them in council,” he said, adding that he was impressed because their support in Nelson Mandela Bay had grown from one ward councillor to two. “I met our members also to explain to them the talks we are engaged in with the ANC and the DA with regard to the formation of a coalition in the metro. We are not talking to one party and are checking our chances,” Holomisa said. “We want to state, however, that these talks were not about positions in the council, but

about putting community issues at the centrestage,” he said, adding that the UDM was waiting for the ANC and the DA to respond to its call to serve the needs of the electorate and if the UDM was satisfied it would agree to the formation of a coalition. “This is the position we explained to all UDM councillors right across the province. We had one such meeting in Mthatha and councillor Mongameli Bobani was there,” Holomisa said about UDM mayoral candidate. “We are happy as members.”

Police women commemorate historic women’s march INDABA REPORTER

SOUTH Africa commemorates Women’s Month annually in August as a tribute to the more than 20 000 women who marched to the Union Buildings on August 9, 1956, in protest against the extension of the pass laws to women. August 9 is celebrated as Women’s Day and this year marks the 60th anniversary of the historic march to the Union Buildings. The theme for this year is “Women United in Moving South Africa Forward”. During Women’s Month, SAPS women carry out initiatives and operations. Operation Basadi is one such initiative and involves conducting roadblocks, stop-

and-search and other operations. Female police officials perform duties at community service centres countrywide and prioritise sexual offences investigations. Last Friday, about 70 policewomen from the Mount Road and Motherwell clusters conducted a roadblock on the N2 near the Baywest Shopping Mall in Port Elizabeth. Motherwell cluster commander MajorGeneral Funeka Siganga was the overall commander of the operation. The roadblock also included women from other law enforcement agencies such as the metro police, local and provincial traffic departments and the Department of Home Affairs. A total of 27 fines amounting to R19 000 were issued, eight illegal immigrants were detained and two unroadworthy vehicles

were impounded. Two suspects were also arrested by female investigators from the family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit during a suspect-tracing operation. The suspects were detained in connection with rapes which occurred in Algoa Park and Bethelsdorp. After the two hour roadblock, awareness pamphlets were handed out to shoppers at Bay West. The SAPS was proud of its women, who had rightfully taken their positions as leaders especially in many previously male-dominated environments, such as the K9 units, air wing and special tactical response units, police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said.

Best Eastern Cape female farmers honoured NCEBA DLADLA EASTERN Cape female farmers were recognised and honoured by the Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform at the Coega Village in Port Elizabeth last Thursday. MEC Mlilo Qoboshiyane said choosing the Best Female Farmer of the Year was an annual event held in August, Women’s Month. He said they were recognising and honouring hard workers who were not only involved in subsistence farming but also engaged in commercial farming. Some, like overall winner Venecia Jansen (54) who owns the 103ha Oudrift deciduous fruit farm in the Koukamma Municipality, were also involved in the export market, Qoboshiyane said. Jansen took home R125 000 for winning the category and a further R250 000 for being the overall winner. “I am satisfied with the work the farmers are doing, save to say there are areas needing special attention in ensuring that they become real commercial farmers and that we create certainty in their production,” he said. For that reason, they had organised training earlier in the day in areas like finance management, administration, payment of taxes and UIF. He said the government also wanted to say thank you for the work done by Dr Gloria Serobe, who had offered R30 million to support the growth of agriculture in the province. The money would help revive factories and firms in areas like Butterworth and Dimbaza. Qoboshiyane said he was concerned that the number of women involved in farming was dwindling nationally and in the Eastern Cape the numbers had dropped from 6 000 to 4 000 in the recent past. For this reason, the department had adopted about 22 schools who were teaching home gardening in the province and working closely with Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and Fort Hare’s research centres. His department was also wrestling with the challenge of drought, which was hitting hard those who were providing food through farming.

SA Rugby on Monday said was it was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former struggle rugby stalwart and South African Minister of Sport and Recreation, Makhenkesi Arnold Stofile. He was 71. Makhenkesi Stofile was an accomplished scrumhalf at Newell High School in Port Elizabeth and captained the University of Fort Hare first XV at both scrumhalf and wing in his playing days. In 1969 and 1970 he played for Border in inter-provincial tournaments as a hooker. He also coached junior and club rugby. He was also a leading administrator and

INDABA REPORTER A TRAUMATIC ordeal involving two students from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University last Saturday ended with charges of rape, hijacking and murder being investigated by police. The tragic incident allegedly played out at about 9.30pm when the two students, aged 21 and 28, were hijacked while sitting in their car in North End in Port Elizabeth by about six men who approached and pointed a firearm at them. They were pushed into the boot of the car and two suspects drove off with it. They were taken to a beach in Port Elizabeth where the 21 year old woman was allegedly raped and her friend shot a few metres away from the car. The suspects drove off with the woman and dropped her off in Central. The incident was reported to the police in the early hours on Sunday morning. An investigation task team was immediately mobilised by acting Mount Road cluster commander Brigadier Ernie Neveling and a search was launched for the suspects and the missing man, with the assistance of the flying squad, SAPS air wing, search and rescue divers and the NSRI. At about 12.30pm the body of a man was found floating in the sea near Brighton Beach. The victim’s vehicle, a gold coloured Polo Vivo, registration number HSC 308 EC, has not yet been recovered. Police are appealing to anyone who can assist in their investigation in tracing the suspects or the hijacked vehicle to contact Detective Captain ‘Klippie’ Killian of SAPS Mount Road on: 0 083 391 2377 or Constable Nkaza: 0 082 442 1384 or 08600 10111. “All information reported to police will be treated as strictly confidential,” police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said.

served as a provincial and national sports administrator for more than 20 years, serving rugby as a member of the Victoria East Rugby Union, the South Eastern District Rugby Union, and the pre-rugby unity South African Rugby Union (SARU). He studied theology and in 1975 was ordained as a minister of the Presbyterian Church of SA. He became Minister of Sport and Recreation in 2004, a position he held until 2010. “Rev Stofile made an invaluable contribution to the Struggle through his work in the sporting arena and was a real rugby man. We have lost another hero of the struggle,” said Oregan Hoskins, President of SA Rugby.

A MEMBER of the Dustlifes gang was sentenced last week to two life sentences for murder. Preston Baadtjies, 28, was also sentenced by the Port Elizabeth High Court to 12 years for attempted murder for shooting at police, five years for the unlawful possession of a firearm and one year for the unlawful possession of ammunition. The sentence for unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition will run concurrently with the life sentences, according to police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu. She said that on July 12, 2013, two men had been shot dead in an open field in Bethelsdorp. Three men, including Vuyani Kondile, who has since died, and Baadtjies allegedly alighted from a minibus and started shooting at Ivan MacDonald, who died on the scene, and Randy Nel, who died in hospital a few days later. Mount Road cluster commander Brigadier Ernie Nevelling, commended the investigating officer and the prosecuting authority for the successful prosecution of Baadtjies. The sentencing was a result of an integrated approach by the different units within the criminal justice system, he said. The senseless attacks and killings were a concern for the police and they would not be deterred by these heinous acts in their quest to ensure that all people in the Northern Areas were and felt safe.

Township pupil wins medical student bursary NCEBA DLADLA “MRS Musa Zokufa-Mlahleki taught me Mathematics when I was in Grade eight, 5-years ago. She was a very good and understanding teacher. I enjoyed her lessons...” This was in part a testimony by a former Elundini Primary School pupil Fundiswa Windvoël (18) during the farewell function of her former teacher and principal ZokufaMlahleki held at NU2 hall, Motherwell last Friday. Speaking in unfaltered English, a Grade 12 learner at Cingani High School, Windvoël described the good and memorable times they used to enjoy with their teacher whose lessons of life would be dearly missed. She said, “All the former Elundini pupils are now well-informed, matured and capable individuals because of your teachings. I am proud to say that surely next year I’m going to study medicine at UCT. This is no doubt going to happen.” Guest speaker and Algoa Bus CEO Reverend Sicelo Duze was touched. He said he was impressed by Windvoël’s confidence in expressing herself in English without having been to a Model C school. The founder of eThembeni Enrichment Centre in North End, a private school renowned for producing 100% matric passes since its formation revealed that he was the Chairperson of Vulamasango Trust which was funding capable Nelson Mandela Bay Township student doctors with admission, tuition, accommodation and transport fees. “Yours is to pass matric and apply, ours (Vulamasango Trust) is to make sure that your dream to study medicine is fulfilled,” said Sakhisizwe Community Church founder Rev Duze to a loud applause. “What I like about her is that she is very articulate and specific about her dreams in life,” he said.

Titi Luzipo to perform live at PE Opera House this Sunday NCEBA DLADLA LOCAL Jazz musician Titi Luzipo will perform at the PE Opera House this Sunday. The Titi Luzipo Women’s Manyano Festival will see Titi perform with Nosisi Mavela and Asanda Mqiki among others in what is dubbed “Songs my mother taught me” a true reflection of the mother and daughter musical relationship she built with her mother Vuyelwa Qwesha-Luzipo, a member of the Port Elizabeth Jazz Divas. “I am very excited about this show and urge music loving fans to come in droves and witness a mother and daughter bond tied by the love of music,” said Titi, adding that she’ll be rendering a piece she also penned for her songstress mother. Said Titi, “This is actually the first leg of the tour that I started in May in Johannesburg, then I went to Durban and Cape Town. Now, it is here in Nelson Mandela Bay.” She said the second leg will feature her mother. The show starts at 6pm and admission is R70 per person and a couple pays R120. Titi will also appear at Decapolos in Kwazakhele tomorrow (Thursday) from 7pm-10pm. Admission is free. Meanwhile, the Senior Citizens Artists Association (SECAA), a body that looks after the interests of elderly musicians, invites music lovers to a free concert at the Nagonza Jebe Small Hall, in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth this Sunday. “We founded the organisation in October 2015 with the aim of uplifting the status of elderly musicians who are on the decline owing to old-age and hard times,” said one of the organisers Reverend Patrick Pasha, a jazz musician, adding that they were thinking about developing a sustainable livelyhood for the

living legends of the metro. “Many of these legends are very quiet. They think that they do not fit in the current music. We are worried. They used to fill the halls during their heydays,” said Vuyelwa Qwesha-Luzipho, mentioning TC White Hall, Cripple Care, Roman Catholic and Muslim (at Kempston Road) Halls and Rio Bioscope including St Stephen’s Church Hall as those that could be filled to capacity by such music legends some of whom were singing without pay or to fundraise for the cause during the struggle for liberation. She rattled off names like Nceba Madlingozi, Manny More, Soulman Zutai, Ndyebo Nkewana, Lami Zokufa and Monde Malandulo as such great musicians that they will be remembering with different types of music and songs. It starts at 3pm.

Elundini says good bye to founding principal NCEBA DLADLA MEMBERS of the education fraternity in Motherwell officially bade farewell to former Elundini Primary School principal Musa Zokufa-Mlahleki. Mrs Zokufa-Mlahleki had been at the helm from 1990 until 2014 when she actually retired as a teacher. Because of other serious commitments of the school and the post of a principal not officially confirmed by the Department of Education, the party to say “Goodbye” to the beloved mother, colleague and friend who was the darling of teachers she led, the pupils she taught and the parents who trusted the future of their children in her capable hands, was held last Friday. Guest-speaker and Algoa Bus CEO Reverend Sicelo Duze who is the founder of eThembeni Enrichment Centre, a successful school in Port Elizabeth that passes with 100%, said education and not money in plastic bags or tenders from government, is the key to better life. He said he was sorry that education was gradually losing, through old age, teachers like Zokufa-Mlahleki who knew the value of education and were making an immense contribution in helping the African child to see the light. He cited some of the reasons for the success of eThembeni as 100% class attendance by both teachers and learners, punctuality, doing homework and parents attending meet-

Teachers, he said, must be assertive without being aggressive. He added, “Teachers Union SADTU destroyed some of the good things in education without thinking about why those things were there in the first place and with what they were going to replace them. Sadtu representative Thamsanqa Matutu also spoke well about ZokufaMlahleki who was his former teacher and colleague from whom he learnt a lot. “She was highly professional. A person that could work without supervision. Her school was well organised and she prepared leaders well to take over after she eventually left education,” said Education Development Officer (EDO) Chris Muller. This was confirmed by Nontsike-

Boardwalk discovers ultimate music talent in Bay NCEBA DLADLA ABOUT 90 hopefuls responded to the Boardwalk Entertainment World and Casino’s call for the Ultimate Talent Competition held at the weekend. “We normally have weekly entertainment sessions by local artists at the retail area and entertainment Bar and decided recently to do this talent search in order to see what we have and whether we can’t increase talent available in our database,” said Boardwalk’s Event and Entertainment Manager Vuyiswa King. Young and old wanabees from the length and breadth of Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality including names that were already recognisable in the entertainment world came for auditions. Judges, King, Tenant Coordinator Amanda Nojoko and Talent Scout Cheslyn “CB” Botha were blown away! Said King, “I always thought that there was talent in Nelson Mandela Bay but surely did not have a clear picture. I am impressed.” “What is most exciting is that we saw different genres of music coming from the metro. We were quite amazed,” said CB, adding that from what they have, they could make a whole day’s entertainment to satisfy different likes and tastes. King said the exercise was fulfilling in that they were able to find talent that they could use for different seasons and events. “Some of the talent will be used in the programmes we’ll reveal in the not-too-distant future,” said King.

The event, an exhibition aimed at encouraging reading, writing and the buying of books, would start at 10am and end 5pm on both days, event organiser and published author Mxolisi Nyezwa said. Nyezwa (49) of New Brighton in Port Elizabeth is the founding editor of the cultural magazine Kotaz, which has been giving aspiring writers a platform to see their works being published since 1997. An award-winning author, Nyezwa has published three collections of poetry, Song Trials (2000), New Country (2008) and Malikhanye (2011). “The book fair is an information session that will be beneficial to both published and unpublished authors. We are expecting book publishers to be present and to give relevant information to aspiring writers who want to be published,” Nyezwa said. Rhodes University academics and leaders of the creative writing master’s degree aimed at empowering young writers will also be there to explain the intricacies of this coveted master’s degree. Rhodes school of languages senior lecturer Professor Pamela Maseko wrote the introduction for professors Jeff Opland and Peter Tshobiso Mtuze’s edited and recently published poetry book Umoya Wembongi (19221935 Collected Poems) by Uitenhage born and bred Reverend Solilo who penned the book Izala in 1937 and was also buried in Uitenhage. The book was launched on July 9 during the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown. “They will be here on the day to talk about this great man John Solilo whose writings still inspire and call for reading even today,” said Nyezwa. He said he hoped Uitenhage writers who were following in Solilo’s footsteps would not miss on this very important event in their history.

Ncedo represents Bay in provincial eliminations SELBY MADIKANE NCEDO High School is expected to fly the flag of Nelson Mandela Bay high during the SAFA Sanlam Kay Motsepe Provincial eliminations that will take place in Matatiele on September 10. This follows their 1-0 win over Mzontsundu High School in their regional finals at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Friday. Ncedo High School striker, Luzuko Konzapi, failed on a number of occasions to get past Mzontsundu High goalkeeper, Asive Hermans, who was at the top of his game. Mzontsundu High School skipper, Zolani Poni, waged battle on Ncedo High School mid-

fielder, Nkosikhona Nogwaru Simayile, in the centre of the park. Thabo Manyathi was the star in the last line of Ncedo High’s defence as he helped his goalkeeper who looked a bit shaky. The first half ended in a deadlock with Hermans pulling brilliant saves. Ncedo High wing, Luthando Ngindo, was like a hot knife going through butter to deliver a perfect cross to Konzapi whose close shot was saved by Hermans. Ngindo passed another quality cross to Simayile who guided Ncedo High School to a hard-won 1-0 victory. According to MOFA Schools soccer coordinator, Macdonald Mabongo, Ncedo High School will campaign at the provincial play-

offs that will take place on September 10 Other SAFA NMB Sanlam Kay Motsepe group stage results: Group A: Nkululeko High 0-4 Mzontsundu High, Limekhaya High 3-1 Nkululeko High and Mzontsundu High 5-1 Limekhaya High. SOUTH Africa’s giant motor company, Algoa Toyota, changed the lives of the players of the Motherwell RFC after they donated kit to them in Motherwell on Saturday. According to Algoa Toyota Managing Director, William Whitefield, the reason for sponsoring Motherwell RFC was one of their corporate social investments. Whitefield said that their company was serious about uplifting the standard of community in particular through sport. Whitefield said, “At Algoa Toyota we would like to see the youth playing sport so that they refrain from doing crime. We also add value to our communities because our business depends on the community to be viable. We

strongly believe that we should form healthy relationships with our communities. We are going to sponsor Motherwell RFC for three years as from now on.” Motherwell RFC Secretary, Sindaphi Windvoël, said that Algoa Toyota had made things easier for their club. Windvoel said, “Algoa Toyota has a big difference to our club. Therefore we are grateful to Algoa Toyota for their contribution to our club. To us this shows their seriousness about what it means to be socially involved in the community, hence we view this as a partnership rather than a sponsorship transaction. We are indeed very grateful to be associated with their brand and we promise to wear this kit with pride. We would like to say thanks to Algoa Toyota for this generous donation and we take pride in Algoa Toyota.”

AmaChina defend their league title SELBY MADIKANE YOUNG Teenagers, popularly known as AmaChina, defended their Port Elizabeth East Football Association (PEEFA) Premier League title when they beat arch rivals, Peace Lovers, 3-2 in their last game at Kwa-Dwesi Community Sports Field on Saturday. AmaChina, who failed to win the 2014/2016 SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay Promotional Playoffs, showed their fighting spirit when they faced tough Lovers. Lovers’ former striker, Phumelele Kilambe Mathumbu, scored the opening goal to put his side 1-0 ahead. Lovers replied when Siyabulela Mgubasi was rewarded with an equaliser. AmaChina extended their lead to 2-1 following a goal by Anele Neymar Tose. Teenagers’ joy came to an end when Athenkosi Heshu banged in Lovers’ second goal. AmaChina’s winning goal was scored by their skipper, Luthando Magaqa Mamoti. AmaChina ended their league campaign with 41 points while Lovers completed their season with 38 points. United Brothers, who took the third position, finished their league run with 32 points while Real Lions ended in the fourth position. The league contention was, however, be-

tween AmaChina, Lovers and Brothers for almost the whole season. Real Aces defeated Crystal City 1-0 while Real Lions shared a 1-1 draw with their neighbours Young Idols. PEEFA Premier League results on Women’s Day: Young Teenagers 5-0 Mighty Birds United Brothers 1-4 Peace Lovers.

Sparks win four teams’ tourney

Bell expected to ring in defence of her national title NCEBA DLADLA BOXING South Africa (BSA) Nelson Mandela Bay Service Provider Mthunzi Mapitiza has given his support for the South African Female Junior Lightweight champion Nozipho Bell who will be defending her title against Cape Town’s mandatory challenger Rushda Mallick over 10 rounds at Mdantsane Indoor Sports Centre next Friday 26 August.

SELBY MADIKANE THE Sparks Masters defeated Eberspacher 3-1 in the Four Teams’ tournament that was played at Manchester United Field in Motherwell NU 9 on Women’s Day. The teams that participated were the Sparks Masters, Zwide Masters, Eberspacher and the Eleven Attackers.

The tournament was played in a straight knockout format right from the outset. In the semi-finals Eberspacher booked themselves a place in the finals after they beat Zwide Masters 2-1. Despite Eleven Attackers giving Sparks Masters a run for their money, they lost the semi-finals 1-0. The final was the game that stole the show. Sparks drew

first blood when Mlungisi Bonga scored a goal that went past Eberspacher goalkeeper, Patrick Rasana. Eberspacher replied with an equalising goal that was scored by Ben Plaatjies late in the first half. Vernon Jewell and Devon Matroos kept Sparks goalkeeper, Unathi Rasana, busy for the rest of the first half. In the second half Sparks

right wing, Zola Chacklas Zuzile, played an imperative role for his side, passing to Thamsanqa Ngele, who scored his side’s second goal. Sizwe Mavovana also added value to the Sparks game when he made a pass that resulted in a goal that was scored by Ngele to make the final score 3-1. Sparks won a prize of R750 and Eberspacher went home with R500.

Brought by TZ Boxing Promotions in honour of women during this August Women’s Month, in the main bout, the fight pits East London’s IBO International champion Sheradine Fortuin fighting against Free State’s WBF International champion Ma-tshediso Nokebesi for the WBA International Junior Bantamweight title. “I am not worried about Bell’s fitness level and ability in the ring against the Cape Townian. I believe she’s going to defend the title successfully and make Nelson Mandela Bay proud,” said Mapitiza. According Mapitiza, there was so much interest in Nelson Mandela Bay for Bell to win the fight as she is currently the only SA champion. “Not only that, with the WBF International Miniflyweight champion Siphose-thu Ncisana not registered (with BSA) to box this year, the only legitimate champion we could pride ourselves in right now, is Bell,” the metro BSA boss said. Explaining, Mapitiza said according to BSA rules and regulations, boxers that were not registered were not licensed to fight. They were even taken out of the ratings by the SA ratings Committee. Caiphus Ntante who mentors both Ncisana and Bell confirmed this setback by the young man known as “The Gift” in the boxing ring. He said Ncisana was late for registration. He was not in the gym every day and would be allowed to make up his mind about his future in the fisticuffs. Like Mapitiza, the mentor’s mind was in Bell ringing to represent Mandela Bay with aplomb on the fight night. “We’re working hard for this fight. It means a lot to us. Bell is getting good sparring from men as well as female fighters. She’s already within the (weight) limit,” said Ntante proudly.

Boys separated from men in WAFA Premier League SELBY MADIKANE IT was clear that boys were separated from men in the Walmer Football Association (WAFA) Premier League games that were played at the Walmer Community Fields over the weekend. The African Aces dropped a valuable two points in their bid to win the league trophy after they played to a 2-all draw against Peace Unit-

ed. The Mabayibone Strikers sneaked into the top of the league table following their 3-1 triumph over Airport Valley United. The Golden Heroes thumped the Bayna Eagles 6-0, while Brazil United defeated the Gwala Stars 2-1. Popular FC were given softpoints when their opponents, Eleven Experience, failed to pitch up for their game.

Real Madrid whacked Airport Valley City 3-0 with Umanyano FC winning 3-2 over the Young Brothers. The Walmer Hotspurs succumbed 3-0 to the Morning Stars while the Young Aces beat Manchester United 4-0. Real Madrid went for a total onslaught against Brazil United in a 7-0 victory. The Ghetto Stars embarrassed the Gwala Stars by beating them 11-1.

The Mabayibone Strikers also defeated the Bayna Eagles 1-0 and Manchester United restored their dignity in their well-deserved 2-1 win over Airport Valley United. Popular FC played to a 4-4 draw against the Walmer Stars. The Walmer Hotspurs also redeemed themselves in their 11-0 triumph over the Young Brothers. However, to the dismay of Young Aces supporters, they lost 7-0 against the Golden Heroes.

Gunners’ ladies win SAFA Women’s Month Celebrations’ Tournament SELBY MADIKANE CITY Lads lifted South African Football Association (SAFA) Nelson Mandela Bay Women’s Month Celebration’s Annual Tournament trophy following their 2-0 victory over Continental Express Ladies at Rosedale Fields on Women’s Day. The tournament started in a round robin system on August 6

and ended in a knockout system on August 9. In the quarterfinals Bodene Shatterprufe lost 3-0 to the Manchester Babes, with the Gunners Ladies eliminating the defending champions Mustangs Ladies 2-1. Continental Express defeated the Sophakama Ladies 3-2 on penalties after the 1-1 tie. The NMMU Madibaz succumbed 1-0 to Highbury Ladies. In the semi-finals, the Babes

lost 4-2 to the Gunners on penalties after a goalless fulltime score, while Continental Express dug deep to register a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Highbury. In the finals Gunners clinched the title when they beat Continental Express 2-0.
