Express GROWS again

ORT Elizabeth Express, the biggest free local newspaper in the Eastern Cape, will from September 7 this year grow again – to a whopping 120 000 copies. This follows exactly a year after the newspaper grew from 90 000 copies to 100 000 copies being distributed weekly. “This confirms what we said a year ago at the announcement of the increase to 100 000 copies – that the demand from our readers for more copies to be printed proves that print is indeed not a dying breed if a publication, while changing with the times, remains indispensable for both its readers and advertisers,” said Bettie Giliomee, regional editor of EP Media. In order to achieve this growth, the Express Indaba, a sister publication of PE Express of which 20 000 copies are distributed in some of the city’s major townships, will be incorporated into the PE Express. The full version of the PE Express, including adverts and news, will now be distributed in the Express Indaba areas. The 20 000 newspapers distributed in these areas will, however, feature special pages to ac-

commodate advertisers who advertised only in the Indaba and who would like to continue to do so. These pages will have local news to cater specifically for readers in these areas. According to Tasmia Ismail, general manager of EP Media and Die Burger, the change in strategy was partly due to the fact that many Indaba readers wanted the full PE Express and its advertising too. PE Express is a publication of EP Media which has a footprint throughout the Eastern Cape with 8 titles publishing 310 000 free copies on a weekly basis. The newspaper has also embraced the digital era with a big social media following due to breaking news of local interest being covered minute by minute as and when it happens. Its stories can also be read on the popular News 24 website. . The expansion of PE Express to 120 000 copies on September 7, was announced to clients at a breakfast held at Elizabeth Place in Newton Park last Friday. See photos of the event on page 2 of this week’s edition or visit PE Express Newspaper’s Facebook page.

Where to get your Port Elizabeth Express from September 7 REPORTER FROM September 7, a total of 20 000 copies of Port Elizabeth Express with special pages with Indaba news, will

be distributed in the areas where Express Indaba used to be distributed. The PE Express will now also be distributed to homes in KwaMag-

xaki, KwaZakhele, Kwaford and Motherwell. Due to the huge number of homes in these areas, not all homes will receive a copy every week. For that

reason bulk drops will be made at popular stores in the areas as well as public places. These include Walmer Pick n Pay, Walmer Spar, the Walmer Clinic (8th Avenue, Walmer), Da-

ku Spar, New Brighton Spar, Metro Hardware, Motherwell Hardware, Build it, the Traffic department in Korsten, Motherwell Spar and the New Brighon Police Station.

Tax on soft drinks seen as threat to jobs and economy COCA-COLA Beverages Africa Chairperson, Phil Gutsche, at a press conference, recently called on the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and the Eastern Cape Government to assist the beverage industry in opposing National Treasury’s proposed tax on sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs). According to Gutsche, the tax threatens thousands of livelihoods and economic growth in the province and the city. SA Treasury on July 8 published a policy paper on a proposed 20% tax on sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) to

take effect April 2017. Gutsche was supported in this call by Steven Dondolo, Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa shareholder; The Beverages Association of South Africa (BevSA); Little Green Beverages of Buffalo City; and Twizza Softdrinks from Queenstown. “Our industry supports the livelihoods of 14 000 people in this city and many more in the province. Nationally we support more than 200 000 jobs. If this tax proceeds, we stand to lose 60 000 jobs in our industry. More than 5 000 livelihoods will be affected in

Nelson Mandela Bay alone,” Gutsche said. The beverage industry’s contribution to the economy has increased much faster in real terms since 2008 (258% increase), than overall GDP (which grew by only 43% over the same period). The poor will also carry a disproportionate burden, but will receive little benefit. For example, Mexico’s tax on SSBs resulted in a reduction of only 17kj of a daily intake of more than 12000kj. “The poor will therefore literally become poorer and not thinner as

a result of this proposed tax,” Gutsche said. Gutsche was supported in this view by BevSA Executive Director Mapule Ncanywa, who emphasised that 97% of South Africa’s obesity problems had nothing to do with sugar-sweetened beverages, as they accounted for only 3% of daily kilojoule intake. “There are better ways to achieve the government’s goals,” Ncanywa said. Voluntary reformulation, packaging, labeling and other targeted commitments, already adopted in South Africa, will result in a greater

impact on tackling obesity than the anticipated reduction of only 37 kilojoules a day because of a tax. Randall Dayce, plant manager at Coca-Cola Beverages SA in Nelson Mandela Bay, indicated that already, taxes on average accounted for 25% of the purchase price of soft drinks. He and smaller bottlers Twizza and Little Green Beverages also reported that the tax would have significant implications for employment and growth prospects in the communities where they operated and in the province. – REPORTER

Neighbours work together to give man decent burial NCEBA DLADLA NEW Brighton residents remembered the Biblical commandment “Love your neighbour as you love yourself” when they worked together to give their neighbour, Mzwandile Gusha, a decent burial. “It has been six weeks since unemployed Mzwandile had died and we, his neighbours, thought of doing something about his funeral,” said a Ferguson Street neighbour, Phumla Mtshayi (56). Mtshayi said Gusha (40) ,who did not even have an identity document, stayed alone in his house which did not have water, electricity or other amenities. “As neighbours we were forced to take action if only to avoid Gusha receiving a pauper's burial,” she said, adding that they had asked each family in the neighbourhood to donate R10. “We then knocked at people’s doors trying to get assistance,” said Mtshayi. The week of the elections did not make things easy for the residents. According to Mtshayi, “Everybody was busy, from councillor to local structures. They sent us from pillar to post, so, it was

up to us as neighbours to do something,” she said. “We held a residents’ meeting and decided to go door-to-door and explain our predicament to caring residents because ithambo lomntu alilahlwa (a human bone cannot be discarded),” said Mtshayi. Mtshayi thanked neighbour Reverend Nonki Ncula and preachers Odwa Mesani, Likhinki Mthotywa and Nomatu Matota for assisting in the burial last Wednesday. Assistance was also received from the New Brighton Spar, Community Chest, Dr Mahlangeni at Jabavu Street, taxi owners Ntantiso and Qaqawuli, the owner of Patido's tavern and individuals such as Sibhidla Majola. Gusha had received a decent funeral, with refreshments provided after the burial at Motherwell cemetery. “We also want to take this opportunity to thank residents for working together in giving Gusha a decent burial. This is what a neighbourhood is about. The Bible says, ‘Love your neighbour as you love yourself,’” said Methodist preacher Mesani, adding that as a community of believers, they had led the mission for Gusha’s burial “as God would require of us as Christians”.

Corrin Piedt of Matrix, (left) and Zanethemba Foundation Director Katherine van Rensburg show the cheque while Zanethemba Project Manager Kirsten Brewerton looks on.

Zanethemba Haven receives a shot in the arm NCEBA DLADLA EVERY day should be a Mandela Day. So says Corrin Piedt of Matrix, a company which donated R5 000 to the Zanethemba Foundation recently. The foundation is a place of safety in Walmer for children up to six years old who have been abandoned, abused, neglected or orphaned. Piedt, a sales manager in the Port Elizabeth region, said her company had asked followers of its social networks to nominate charities and explain why they should be awarded the R5 000. “Chanel Everton nominated Zanethemba (which means Bring Hope),” she said. “This institution won our hearts because of the love, joy and hope that it gives to young children. That is the reason we are here.” Piedt said they had spread love as part of Mandela Month and every day should be Mandela Day. “It is the duty of every South African, in the spirit of former president Nelson Mandela, to do something to change

the lives of children for the better every day.” Zanethemba Foundation director Katherine van Rensburg said, “We have in our care children who have been neglected, abandoned, orphaned or abused. All children are placed in our care by social workers from various organisations, by means of a court order.” They look after the children until permanent homes are found for them with the help of the Department of Social Development and various child welfare organisations. “Depending on their unique set of circumstances, they are either reunited with their biological parents, fostered by a biological family member (like an aunt or granny); placed in foster care with nonfamily foster parents; adopted or placed in a children’s home,” she said. “We want to thank Matrix for making a difference in the lives of these children,” Van Rensburg said, adding that the money would come in handy as they were about to open another haven because of an increase in their intake of children.

Papa G in Bay with moral regeneration play DARLINGTON Michaels, who played Georgie Zamdela, alias Paga G, on the soapie Isidingo, is in Nelson Mandela Bay. The beloved actor is staging Who’s to Blame? – a theatre production he penned and which is presented by Melisizwe Community Theatre. Melisizwe is a group of actors belonging to the same company that gave “Papa G” prominence as a young actor and playwright. Michaels’ production, which is about moral regeneration, has been brought to Nelson Mandela Bay after he met Port Elizabeth’s Monga Peter, the chairperson of the Eastern Cape chapter of the South African National Association of School Governing Bodies, in Gauteng recently. He said the play addressed a huge problem which Eastern Cape schools are facing. “In the recent past we have been visiting schools in the townships of Port Elizabeth, the Northern Areas and Uitenhage to address the

very same problem of moral regeneration, so I believe Papa G and his crew came just at the right time,” Peter said. Michaels said he had been thinking about the future of South African schoolchildren when he wrote the musical which talks about drug and alcohol abuse, school drop-outs, child pregnancy and disrespect for teachers and parents by school children. “There is this huge problem we’re facing as the country. It is there for all to see. The production seeks to find out who must be blamed. “Are the parents, teachers, members of civil society, government doing their part in trying to solve the problem?” asked Michaels. He said the lack of recreational facilities and proper career guidance in some cases were to blame for a lack of direction and enthusiasm by the young to dream big and work hard for the attainment of those dreams. Actress Titi Kandabele (23), who is proud to

be a member of the crew, said the production had taught her a lot. “We see so much interest in young people, meaning that they really appreciate the teaching they receive and take it seriously,” she said. “Some confessed to taking drugs and asked for forgiveness,” said Tebogo Boikanyo (24), another actress. Michaels urged schools to contact his crew or Peter in order to see this edutainment production. “I’d like to reach out to more metro schools,” he said. He thanked Lotto for providing them with transport. “We have already visited a number of schools in Zwide and KwaZakhele,” Michaels said. They are booked until September 2, but he said they could take more dates until September 15, when they would be going back to Johannesburg. – NCEBA DLADLA

PE’s Bevin has heart set on ‘Idols’ glory “I KNEW I only had this one chance. That I couldn’t afford to return home empty-handed.” This was what motivated young Bevin Samuels (19) from Gelvandale, who is the Eastern’s Cape latest hope to finally bring the Idols crown to the province. He is currently in the Idols Top 37. The song he sang at the Idols audition was “Billionaire” by Travie McCoy, featuring Bruno Mars - a song which he chose at the last minute. “I had rehearsed other songs, but when I got to the audition I decided to go with ‘Billionaire’ because I thought it would suit me better, being young and wanting to be successful.” The change in song choice paid off, with all

four judges giving him the nod to go through to the next round. “Calling my mom, Benita January, with the news that I had received the Golden Ticket was even better than when I received my matric results last year,” said Bevin. He only started taking singing seriously in high school. In Grade 9 he and two other learners started a boy band, whereafter he was recruited by a group called The Gentlemen, of which he was the lead singer. Shortly after that he went solo, and that was when his friend and former Idols contestant, Alton Zackay, encouraged him to enter the competition. “We talked about it for a while and he asked why don’t I try out for Idols, but I wanted to finish school first.”

This former Chapman High School learner finally decided to take the plunge this year and audition for Idols after thinking about it for two years. The journey hasn’t been easy - after a lone bus trip to Cape Town he nearly missed his audition because the train to the venue was delayed. “It motivated me even more to give my all when I sang.” He knew that the notorious Theatre Week round that followed would be tough, but nothing could have prepared him for how brutal the group rounds were. “It was very difficult. Two of my group members didn’t make it through. It was disappointing because we practised until 4am and I stayed up until 6am, making sure I would remember the words to the song.”

He added that behind the scenes everyone was very emotional, and most of them had lost their voices owing to stress. Bevin will be in the line-up at a concert this weekend which will feature artists such as Alton Zackay, Enrico Damons, Junant, Stone Sisters and Peace Finders. The show takes place at the Gelvandale Community Hall on Friday, August 26, at 7pm. Tickets are R50 for adults, R20 for children aged 5-13 and free for children under 5. For tickets and more info call Zaakira Allen on 076 531 6269. ) To see if Bevin makes it to the Idols Top 16, tune into Mzansi Magic (Dstv channel 161) this Sunday at 5:30pm. – ZELDRÉ STRAUSS SWANEPOEL

Controversy over upcoming fight rages on NCEBA DLADLA LOCAL Junior Heavyweight boxer Unathi Jacobs is not registered to box this year. This was revealed by Nelson Mandela Bay Boxing South Africa (BSA) Service Provider Mthunzi Mapitiza. Jacobs, who is a former Eastern Cape Heavyweight champion and lives in KwaNobuhle in Uitenhage, told Express Indaba a month ago that he was preparing for a fight and that he would soon make an announcement about it. His father and manager, Aaron Jacobs, still maintained that there was a possibility of a fight when asked whether the fight the No.8 SA-rated Unathi spoke about was still on. “Nothing tangible has come just yet. We are still waiting, but when everything is finalised we’ll make an announcement,” he said Mapitiza, who sanctions Mandela Bay boxers’ fights, said he did not know about the fight. He, instead questioned the possibility of a fight for Jacobs, who is currently not regis-

tered with BSA, and legally cannot be allowed to box. “I do not know about Jacobs’ fight. It never came to me. Of course, there wouldn’t be a fight because Jacobs is not registered for the year,” said Mapitiza, adding that boxers failing to register with BSA made things difficult for promoters to do their job. “This (registration) thing is a big problem that we face every year. The deadline for registration was supposed to be April but the BSA board extended it to the end of May and then, finally to the end of June. “Boxers would get fights in December and get paid good monies but fail to register in January,” said Mapitiza. An example of this is the case of WBF International Miniflyweight title holder Siphosethu Ncisane of Walmer who won the then vacant title, beating Grahamstown’s Ndikho Magadaza via a 11th round stoppage. Ncisane was, however, not registered to box this year and could be forced to vacate the crown by the State of Luxembourg-based world boxing sanctioning body whose president is Howard Goldberg of Cape Town.

NCEBA DLADLA RETIRED Port Elizabeth boxer Nkosinathi Zamela (64) loves boxing for the way it in-stills discipline in young people.

Zamela of NU9 Motherwell has been involved in boxing at all levels. He started off in fisticuffs as an amateur (currently known as open boxing), and then moved on to be a professional boxer, trainer, manager, promoter and ring official. He was the Nelson Mandela Bay Amateur Boxing Organisation’s vice-chairman from 2011 to 2014. He says boxing kept him busy with the development of the local community. “This sport keeps the youth occupied with development and away from loitering in the streets, taking drugs and involved in crime,” said the widowed father of three children. Zamela is a retiree from Beacon Sweets. “I started boxing in 1964 under the trainer known as Zalela in Zeleni near King William’s Town. After 73 fights and becoming a Border champion I turned professional in 1973,” reminisced Zamela. He is a licensed Boxing South Africa (BSA) ring official, a qualified South African National Amateur Boxing Organisation (SANABO) ring official and World Boxing Federation (WBF) ring official. Zamela said he is qualified to take part in Olympic Style Boxing anywhere in the world

Multi-purpose sport facility for Ncedo SSS SELBY MADIKANE JOY was written on the faces of the learners, parents and teachers when Sport and Recreation South Africa (SRSA) and The Sports Trust opened the multi-purpose sport facility of Ncedo Senior Secondary School on Friday. SRSA Chief Director Onke Mjo stated that the government decided to establish a world class multi-purpose sport facility at Ncedo SSS in order to promote mass participation in sport. According to Mjo, the main objective of the facility was to give the previously disadvantaged learners an opportunity to grow in sport. “We have discovered that Ncedo SSS was one of the schools that will help the learners to go the extra mile in sport. The neighbouring schools should also be given an opportunity to have an access to the facility,” said Mjo. The Sports Trust Chairman, Jackie Mathebula, said they decided to step in with the aim of making the dreams of the learners a reality. Mathebula said the Sports Trust is a non-governmental organisation that acts as an implementation partner for sport development on

behalf of the donors and stakeholders in disadvantaged communities in SA. This includes building and renovating sports facilities on their behalf, as well as installing state of the art multi-purpose sports courts and providing sporting equipment and kit. “Today we are going to hand over kit and sport equipment to 23 schools. This school must look after the multi-purpose facility and the community should make this facility last more than 20 years,” said Mathebula. Ncedo SSS educator Qinile Matikinca said the facility is a source of inspiration and hope for Ncedo SSS and neighbouring schools. “The facility will be jealously guarded and retained for the next generation. This facility will help us to identify future stars,” said Matikinca. School Governing Body member Khotso Daniels thanked SRSA and The Sports Trust for givin the less fortunate school this opportunity. Daniels said, “When community members protest for service delivery, they should not destroy this facility. The learners should look after the facility too. I want to thank SRSA and The Sports Trust for bringing about change in the lives our children.”

as a referee and a judge. As a pro, fighting under the late Wellem, Zamela, known to many as “Kid Nqwamnqwam”, he had only eight fights. Those were against the likes of Andile Mkenkcele, Bassie Kamana, Andile Madope and Mongezi Loliwe. “I joined Mazotsho in Kwazakhele to train boxers like Mongezi Ntshidi, who fought against East London’s Sexon “Kid Phambele” Ngqayimbana for the Cape featherweight championship, among other boxers,” he said. When he moved to Motherwell in 1988 he had started the Supreme Boxing Club, which later also operated as Supreme Boxing Promotions. He trained some of the notable names and promoted them to being champions. “Because of the scarcity of gymnasiums, I built a shack and trained my boxers there. I also bought gloves and other equipment,” said Zamela, thanking current Soqhayisa High School principal Mlungisi Nopote for opening a class where he could train the children. “Four boxers I trained and promoted, Mengezeleli Toyise, Monde Mbumbulwana, Thomas Manyathi and Walter Maqabaza, won EP Colours before I turned them pro,” said Zamela proudly. The first three had won EP titles as pros while Maqabaza had lost against former South African bantamweight champion, the late Sandile Mantile, in a fight for the national title elimination. “Some of the boxers I promoted included Patrick Fika, Mxolisi Danster and former EP champ Andile Gege,” he said.
