Heroes welcome for Siya Kolisi

PE Express now in your neighbourhood TODAY marks the last edition of Express

Indaba. From next week Wednesday, Indaba readers will receive the Port Elizabeth Express, in the areas where Indaba used to be distributed. PE Express, the biggest free local newspaper in the Eastern Cape, will from September 7 grow to a whopping 120 000 copies. This follows exactly a year after the newspaper grew from 90 000 copies to 100 000 copies being distributed weekly. In order to achieve this growth, the Express Indaba, a sister publication of PE Express, which had been distributed in some of the city’s major townships, will be incorporated into the PE Express. The full version of the PE Express, including adverts and news, will now be distributed in the Express Indaba areas. The 20 000 newspapers distributed in these areas will, however, feature special pages to accommodate advertisers who advertised only in the Indaba and who would like to continue to do so. These pages will have local news to cater specifically for readers in these areas. According to Tasmia Ismail, general manager of EP Media and Die Burger, the change in strategy was partly due to the fact that many Indaba readers wanted the full PE Express and its advertising too. PE Express is a publication of EP Media which has a footprint throughout the Eastern Cape with 8 titles publishing 310 000 free copies on a weekly basis. . The PE Express will now be distributed to homes in KwaMagxaki, KwaZakhele, Kwaford and Motherwell. Owing to the huge number of homes in these areas, not all homes will receive a copy every week. For that reason bulk drops will be made at popular stores in the areas as well as public places. These include Walmer Pick n Pay, Walmer Spar, the Walmer Clinic (8th Avenue, Walmer), Daku Spar, New Brighton Spar, Metro Hardware, Motherwell Hardware, Build it, the Traffic department in Korsten, Motherwell Spar and the New Brighon Police Station. – REPORTER

NCEBA DLADLA THE lives of 40 young rugby players of eMsengeni Primary School in Naka Street, Zwide Township, will not be the same after meeting their rugby hero, Siya Kolisi, yesterday. Kolisi, a Stormers and Springbok player, attended eMsengeni when his rugby talent was spotted. He was then sent to Grey Junior school where his rugby playing reached new heights. As the ambassador of Land Rover, Kolisi visited his alma mater yesterday with Sevens rugby player Juan De Jongh, SA Rugby referee Matthew Pearce and Supersport presenter Craig Joubert to interact with the pupils and talk about the importance of education and sport. Former teacher Eric Songwiqi, who helped

Siya to enrol at Grey when he was in Grade 6, also attended the event. The visitors took to the rugby field and coached the school’s under-13 and under-12 players, who were 20 apiece, with rugby rules, ball passing and all other intricacies of the game. “I am quite emotional as well as excited seeing these children play on the grounds where I actually carved my future in rugby,” said Kolisi, who thanked his sponsor Land Rover for affording him an opportunity to encourage young children from “home” to take sport and education seriously. “My wish has always been to see them getting better sporting facilities in township schools so that they produce the next generation of rugby players,” said Kolisi. Kolisi’s name is written on the rugby shirts of the two teams as he sponsored them.

“Every time I look at Dan Qeqe stadium I become worried. The stadium used to have green grass for the rugby fields, a tennis court and cricket grounds. Now, it is not the same. My dream is to revive this stadium,” said Kolisi. The young rugby players were excited to have Kolisi at their school. “I liked seeing Siya at our school. I want to thank him for what he has done for our school. I too would like to play rugby for the Springboks, like him,” said Bulela Minyayo (13), while Khayalethu Memani (12) hopes to emulate Kolisi by playing in the World Cup. Rugby coach and teacher Nomathamsanqa Magutywa believes that that dream is not farfetched. “Six of eMsengeni U/13 players went for the trials for the EP Team in Cradock last week. Memani was one of the six,” she said. . Turn to page 2 for more photos.
