City basks in Tri­Nations glory TANYA VAN ZYL

HE much-anticipated Castle Tri-Nations Test match between South Africa and New Zealand this past Saturday was described as “the best test ever” in which the Springboks have played.

This according to Stephan Pretorius, CEO of Access Management (which manages the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium), who was told by the South African Rugby Union (SARU) that they have never experienced such amazing atmosphere at any test before.

“It truly is a great day for Port Elizabeth! We have shown once again that we can host any big event in our city and stadium,” Pretorius said.

Oregan Hoskins, President of SARU, told the PE Express that PE and the Test was “exceptional” and that the Springboks enjoyed the hospitality of the people immensely.

The stadium boasts a capacity crowd of 45 900 at Saturday’s game – the most to date at the stadium – with tickets being sold out long before the game.

“This is what SARU wants to see at a test – a stadium packed with supporters,” he explained.

This could mean more matches of this stature in the future, Pretorius believes.

“The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium is now becoming a sought-after venue for SA Rugby. And all the publicity we received during the weekend can only be good for the upcoming Sevens Series.”

The South African Sevens will take place on December 9 and 10 at the stadium. The HSBC Sevens World Series will start in Australia on November 25 this year, with the Dubai tournament following a week later, before the third leg in Port Elizabeth.

Jurie Roux, the CEO of the South African Rugby Union, said: “The South African leg in Port Elizabeth is something that we’re looking forward to. We have less than four months to put everything in place,

but as we’ve seen this week with the preparations for the Test, the infrastructure is in place. I’m confident we can put together a world class event yet again.”

Mandlakazi Skefile, CEO of Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism (NMBT) agreed and said this weekend showed that PE is ready for big rugby and that it gives the city another chance to prove its “mettle as an outstanding events and sports destination”.

“The support was beyond phenomenal – as people poured into the city from all over the country our occupancy figures soared to between 98% and 100% full. This figure does not factor in people who stayed with family and friends, which also would have been very high.

“The spinoffs of such an event are huge, rippling over the whole tourism industry. Restaurants were bustling, transport services jetted people around, vendors made money, and with the perfect weather the vibe in the city was extraordinary,” Skefile said.

She believes the Test is a precursor of great things to come.

“The World Cup gave us the confidence we needed to start lobbying for our slice of the national events pie.

Each successful event we pull off shows that we are an ideal events destination – and all of our key attributes, like being the 15-minute, friendly, safe, clean and fun city we are, are helping us win the hearts of big event organisers and their supporters.”

Skefile also believes the IRB Sevens is going to be just as exciting, if not bigger.

“It will involve a lot more international tourism as people come from around the globe to support their teams. Remember the IRB Sevens is in December – so we will have good weather, beaches, and a holiday vibe to complement the IRB Sevens sporting bonanza.”

In the meantime, everyone has started talking about the way in which the National Anthem was sung by the supporters on Saturday.

“It showed that everyone in PE knows the National Anthem!” Pretorius said.

Even the Springbok players tweet-

ed about their experience in the Friendly City. John Smit, Captain of the Springboks, tweeted: “What a great week in PE. In my last home soil test, that was the most amazingly sung National Anthem and made me immensely proud to be South African!”

Bryan Habana tweeted: “Singing the National Anthem today was one of the best and proudest of my career!

Well done PE! Absolutely spine-tingling.”

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE STADIUM During Saturday’s Castle Tri-Nations Match, 31 000 litres of beer was consumed (excluding SAB’s Brutal Fruit drinks and Coca-Cola’s cooldrink products) The stadium cost R2.4 billion to build and its annual operational

costs is an estimated R21 million.

More than 35 events have been held at the stadium since it was built.

Approximately 800 000 spectators (exluding Saturday’s game) have passed through the stadium.

Hotel tot ou glorie herstel VERA SCHOEMAN Restourasiewerk aan die Grand Hotel – wat op sy dag bekend gestaan het as “die beste hotel in die land” – vorder só goed, dat dit voor die einde van die jaar weer in bedryf kan wees.

Mnr. Charles Willows, voorman van die omvangryke projek wat agtien maande gelede begin het, het gesê hy is baie trots op wat hulle tot dusver reggekry het.

“Baie mense het gesê ons is stapelgek en het geen kans op sukses nie.

“Maar as daardie einste mense vandag hier kan kom deurloop, is ek seker hulle sal ’n ander deuntjie sing.”

Die verstommende gedaanteverwisseling van die 120 jaar oue hotel in die hartjie van Sentraal se historiese skatkis is nog nie so sigbaar van buite af nie.

Maar agter die antieke houtdeur word ’n mens in ’n oogwink na die tydlose elegansie en styl van die vorige eeu teruggevoer.

Die projekbestuurder en een van die ontwikkelaars, mnr. Mark Stemmett, sê dit is presies wat hulle wou bereik. “Hierdie is nie ’n mooimakery nie – dis ’n restourasieprojek waar ons elke enkele deel van die hotel terugneem na sy oorspronklike toestand.

“Van die Oregon-dennehoutvloere tot die hoë plafonne, die houtdraaiwerk van die traprelings, die antieke baddens en meubels en hangkaste tot

die gasstoof in die kombuis, die wynkelder en die vensterrame.

“Dit gaan stadig en moeilik, maar dis ongetwyfeld een van die bevredigendste projekte wat ek nog in my lewe aangepak het.”

Volgens Stemmett was hul skeptici se grootste bekommernis die verval en misdaad in Sentraal, maar is dit in húl oë geen probleem nie. “Ons het van die begin af gesê en ons glo dit vandag nog: Maak die Grand Hotel reg en jy maak die hele Sentraal reg.”

Mnr. Phillip Dawood, die skrynwerker in die projek, het gesê hy is op al hul werk baie trots, maar veral oor wat hulle met die manjifieke houtdeure reggekry het. “Ons moes klaarspeel met 103 jaar se lae op lae verf.

“En om vandag hierdie deure te sien glinster en lewe, sal enige houtliefhebber se hart warm laat klop.”

Volgens Willows was nóg een van hul groot uitdagings om antieke Oregon-dennehouthangkaste en marmerwastafels vir elk van die slaapkamers te vind. “Mense het by antiekwinkels landwyd vir ons gaan soek – van die Groot Karoo en die Kaap tot Johannesburg.”

Hulle het ook sover as moontlik van werkers uit die townships gebruik gemaak.

Stemmett sê die doel van die hotel is nie om verblyf te skep nie, maar ’n ervaring. “Ons is geseën met ’n asemrowende uitsig oor die Donkinreservaat, die see en die ligtoring – alles dinge wat van Port Elizabeth die ongelooflike stad maak wat dit is.”

Die restourasiewerk is buite nog nie so sigbaar soos bin­ ni­in die Grand Hotel nie.

DIE nuwe tussentydse kontrakteur van die Arlingtonstortingsterrein het verlede week naarstig gespook om met die groeiende berg rommel klaar te speel.

Dít kom nadat die vorige kontrakteur, Lexintons Civils & Plant, vroeër deur die metro die trekpas gegee is. Hulle bestuur sedert Augustus verlede jaar die terrein en het slegs een jaar van hul driejaarkontrak voltooi.

Die Burger het die terrein besoek nadat talle mense gebel het om oor die skokkende toestand te kla.

Hope rommel het oral in die middel van die pad gelê en die wind het wolke vullis en plastieksakke kilometers ver gewaai.

Groot swerms kraaie en aasvoëls, uitgeteerde honde, koeie en mense het tussen die rommel gekrap na iets te ete.

Themba Williams van die kontrakteur Shweme Civils, wat die R20 miljoen-kontrak oorgeneem het, het die blaam vir die probleem voor die deur van Lexintons geplaas. Volgens hom het hulle die terrein verlede week Maandagoggend in ’n warboel aangetref nadat Lexintons se werkers ongenooid opgedaag en vragmotorbestuurders aangemoedig het om hul vullis enige plek te stort.

“Ons spook nou al twee dae en ons maak goeie vordering.

Ek is seker ons sal teen die einde van die week ’n reuse verandering sien.”

Kalp Mostert van Lexintons Civils het gesê hulle het die terrein op Sondag 13 Augustus silwerskoon en netjies agtergelaat en hulle het die lugfoto’s om dit te bewys.

Shweme Civils het die terrein vyf jaar bedryf voordat die kontrak aan Lexintons toegeken is. “Maar hulle het nooit eens hul werkskamp verwyder soos hulle moes nie – asof hulle geweet het dis net ’n kwessie van tyd voordat hulle terugkom.” Mostert het gesê daar is geen manier dat die hoogs gespesialiseerde werk met net ’n stootskraper en laaigraaf gedoen kan word nie. “As hulle dít regkry, eet ek my hoed op.” ’n Munisipale woordvoerder, Ongama Mtimka, het bevestig hulle het van kontrakteurs verwissel. “Ons probeer al lank om die vorige mense verwyder te kry.”

Volgens Mtimka het mense verlede week Maandagoggend opgedaag en die rommel begin rondgooi. “Ooggetuies beweer dié mense het vir die vorige maatskappy gewerk.”

Met Die Burger se besoek verlede week aan die Arlington­stortingsterrein het groot hope rommel oral op die pad gelê.

DIE Nelson Mandelabaai-metropool het verlede week die inwerking stelling van sy rekeningstelsel ’n derde keer uitgestel – tot Oktober 2012.

Die stelsel moes in 2008 al in werking gewees het. Maar omdat die diensverskaffer, Fujitsu, nie waarborge kan gee dat die stelsel 100% sal funksioneer nie, wil die metro nie die stelsel aanvaar nie.

Lede van die komitee vir begroting en tesourie was op verlede week se vergadering verbaas oor dié gesloer.

Mnr. Leon de Villiers, komiteelid en DA-koukusleier, het gesê dit lyk of die metro die onvermydelike probeer uitstel.

Mnr. Kevin Jacoby, uitvoerende direkteur oor begroting en tesourie in die metro, het gesê betalings aan Fujitsu word weerhou totdat die stelsel gereed is vir installering. Volgens hom het die maatskappy al tussen R30 miljoen en R40 miljoen aan die projek bestee. Die metro het R70 miljoen begroot.

NMMU stig sentrum vir gemeenskapskole ANRI HENDRIKS SKOOLHOOFDE voel maklik verswelg en oorweldig deur dinge soos hongerte, armoede en hoë misdaad wat net buite die skoolhek wag.

Dr. Al Witten, die man aan die stuur van die nuutgestigte Sentrum vir die Gemeenskapskool aan die Nelson Mandela Metropolitaanse Universiteit (NMMU), wil dít verander deur skole in en om Port Elizabeth in ware gemeenskapskole om te skep.

Die sentrum, ’n eerste in die land, gaan navorsing doen by ’n aantal skole in die streek om vas te stel watter programme hulle het om maatskaplike probleme aan te pak.

Uiteindelik hou Witten duim vas dat die gemeenskapskool-model wat hulle sodoende gaan ontwikkel, die regering sal oortuig om meer te doen.

“Verder gaan ons klasse aanbied vir ons student-onderwysers oor hoe om ’n leerkrag te wees in so ’n gemeenskapskool.”

Hulle gaan studente in hierdie gemeenskapskole plaas en ander fakulteite en skole ook by die NMMU betrek.

Hoewel die sentrum eers amptelik later die maand sy deure open, help dit reeds sowat 12 skole, wat hulself die Manyano-netwerk gedoop het.

“Die konsep van gemeenskapskole is nie iets nuuts in Suid-Afrika nie.

Daar is ook ander lande wêreldwyd wat reeds sulke skole suksesvol bedryf,” het Witten gesê. ’n Gemeenskapskool is een waar

die skool ewe veel klem plaas op gehalte-onderrig as op die maatskaplike welstand van ’n kind.

Hyself het gesien hoe hy as skoolhoof destyds ouers én kinders meer positief oor skool kon kry deur die gemeenskap-konsep.

“Ek was by ’n township skool in ’n baie moeilike buurt in die Kaap, waar ons altyd probleme met inbrake en misdaad gehad het. Ek het toe lank gedink en besluit pleks daarvan om die gemeenskap uit te sluit, moet ons hulle betrokke kry by die skool.”

Werkloosheid en ’n tekort aan huise was in daardie stadium ’n groot kopseer. Witten het skenkings aangevra en daarmee toerusting gekoop sodat ouers van die leerders, sowel as werklose jeugdiges, kon leer stene maak. Binne ’n jaar het die vandalisme by die skool gestop.

“Ek dink die voordele is legio vir kinders wat in ’n gemeenskapskool is. Hul selfvertroue styg en omdat die grootmense in hul lewe ’n lewendige belangstelling in die skool ontwikkel, maak dit skool interessant.”

Dit gaan ook van hoofde verg om ’n kopskuif te maak en aanvanklik meer uit te reik na ander.

“Ons wil vir hulle wys dat daar mense is wat ’n netwerk van ondersteuning wil bied.”

Dr. Al Witten, direkteur van die Sentrum vir die Gemeenskapskool aan die Nelson Mandela Metropolitaanse Universiteit (NMMU), verduidelik hoe ’n gemeenskapskool leerders, skoolhoofde en ouers kan help om bo hul omstandighede uit te styg.

Dit gaan van hoofde verg om ’n kopskuif te maak en aanvanklik meer uit te reik na ander.

Studente van universiteit sê hul kultuur­sê Die Nelson Mandela Metropolitaanse Universiteit (NMMU) het verlede week ’n spesiale diversiteitsweek gehou om die diversiteit van sy studente en personeel te vier en sodoende beter interkulturele verhoudinge, verdraagsaamheid en wedersydse respek te kweek. Studente kon onder meer Franse lesse neem, filmvertonings bywoon en ’n multi-kulturele skouspel met Hip Hop-danse geniet. Maar wat beteken diversiteitsweek vir die NMMU se studente? Anri Hendriks het gaan uitvind en Beverley Darlow het die foto’s geneem.

Chantel Hustler (23): “Ek het gesien dit is diversiteitsweek. Ek dink dit sal hart­ seer wees as studente nie daaraan wil deelneem nie. Ek geniet dit om mense te ontmoet.”

Kelly Muller (21): “Dit is verrassend om te weet hoeveel mense van verskillende lande almal saam met jou in die klas is. Ek leer op die oomblik Xhosa.”

Kurt Melwich (20): “Ek dink dit is ’n goeie idee sodat mense van verskillende kulture en agtergronde kan meng. Ek dink in die algemeen kom almal op die kampus goed oor die weg.”

Maliko Mohamed (links, 18) en haar vriendin Rushni Lillah (19): “Ons dink dit is ’n blink plan omdat die universiteit nie net vir ’n spesifieke nasie hier is nie.

Suid­Afrika is tog ’n diverse land.”

Lourens Millard (20): “Dit is die eerste dat ek van die week hoor. As ek tyd gehad het, sou ek dit bygewoon het. Oor die algemeen hou die Afrikaanses en die Engelses hulle maar eenkant.”

Bome in Fairview afgekap TANYA VAN ZYL MOTORISTE wat gereeld in en verby Fairview rondry sou agterkom dat dié gebied deesdae ’n bietjie kaler lyk as voorheen.

Dít is omdat ’n groot aantal bome wat in dié eens beboste area gestaan het, nou afgekap word.

Volgens Retief Odendaal, DA-raadslid vir wyk 6, is die Port Elizabeth Land Restitution and Housing Association (Pelrha) besig om hierdie area te ontbos.

“Ons het geweldige probleme met die beboste gebiede as gevolg van mense wat maklik ongesiens onwettiglik daar rommel en gemors stort. Dit is nou natuurlik baie moeilik om ongesiens in die ontboste gebiede rommel te

stort,” het Odendaal gesê.

Hy het bygevoeg dat daar reeds groot vordering gemaak is met onwettige storting nadat daar met die ontbossing begin is.

“Onwettige storting bly desondanks steeds ’n groot probleem regoor die metro en ek doen ’n beroep op inwoners om nie te skroom om my te bel indien hulle enige oortreders op heterdaad betrap nie,” het hy gevra.

Intussen het hy te kenne gegee dat hy nie gelukkig is dat al die bome afgesaag word nie, maar hy verstaan ook dat dit alles uitheemse bome is.

Volgens Clive Felix, direkteur van Pelrha, word die bome nie net afgesaag om onwettige rommelstorters af te skrik nie, maar ook om plek te maak vir nog huise wat hier gebou gaan word.

Lorraine resident tied up while house ransacked A HOUSEOWNER living off Circular Drive in Lorraine was overpowered and tied up by four men during the early hours of Saturday morning, August 13.

According to the Weekly Atlas Newsletter, four men gained entry at about 5am and caught the woman completely off-guard. They used a blunt object to hit her over the head before tying her up.

The woman, however, managed to free herself and ran to a neighbour further down the road.

They immediately notified the Police, who arrived on the scene moments later, but by this time the suspects had already made off with the victim’s handbag, a computer and cell phones.

An ambulance arrived and a paramedical team treated her injuries.

gebruikers wat dié sosiale netwerk op hul selfone gebruik, besef het al die kontaknommers op hul selfone word op hul Facebookprofiele gelys.

Mense het op Facebook en op ander internet-forums en blogs daarteen uitgevaar en dit as privaatheidskending bestempel.

Facebook se bestuur het egter gesê dié funksie is al byna ’n jaar lank in werking, maar mense het dit eenvoudig nou eers agtergekom – en dat jou kontaklys nié vrylik op die internet of

aan jou vriende beskikbaar is nie.

Facebook se bestuur het dadelik in ’n amptelike verklaring gesê as jou foon se kontaknommers op jou Facebook-profiel verskyn, is dit nie sonder jou toestemming daar geplaas nie. “Gerugte dat jou selfoon-kontaknommers op Facebook vir alle Facebook-gebruikers sigbaar is, is vals,” lui die verklaring. Dié persoonlike kontaklys, wat voorheen as die Phonebook-funksie bekend gestaan het, is volgens Facebook al lank deel van gebruikers se profielblaaie.

“Die kontaknommers wat op jou profiel verskyn is óf deur jou Facebook-vriende self daar geplaas, óf dit

het daar verskyn nadat jy self toestemming gegee het om jou selfoonkontakte met jou Facebook-vriende te sinchroniseer,” lui die verklaring.

“Net soos op jou selfoon is dit net jy alleen wat dié nommers kan sien.”

Om die lys kontaknommers op jou Facebook-profiel te sien, kliek op “Account”, dan op “Edit Friends” en dan op “Contacts” aan die linkerkant van die vertoonde blad. As jy dié kontaklys van jou vriende se selfoonnommers van jou profiel wil verwyder, kliek op die skakel “this page” aan die regterkant van laasgenoemde blad en kies dan op die volgende blad die opsie “Remove”.

“Hy was bemind en gerespekteer onder sy kollegas en sal erg gemis word,” het Nash gesê. Van der Merwe was as politieke verslaggewer alombekend by die OosKaapse wetgewer.

Bobby Stevenson, DA-leier in die OosKaapse wetgewer, het Van der Merwe bestempel as ’n “skerp verslaggewer wat nie bang was om die moeilike vrae te vra nie.

Sy heengaan is ’n groot verlies vir die joernalistieke gemeenskap en vir die provinsie. Sterk joernaliste, soos wat hy was, is nodig om politici op hul tone te hou.”

Van der Merwe, wat op ’n plaas in die Fort Beaufort-distrik gebore is, het ’n graad in die regte aan die Rhodes Universiteit verwerf.

Christian van der Merwe, sy seun het gesê hy het vroeg in sy loopbaan die wetsboeke verruil vir die pen en was hy meer as 40 jaar in die nuusbedryf.

Hy laat ook sy broer, Nico, en skoonsuster, Olga agter. Die verassing is privaat.

Battle for the best boerewors EIGHT championship boerewors contenders will battle it out at Shoprite Stanford Square at Stanford Quarter, Stanford Road, Korsten this Saturday in order to make their way to the grand finale in Sun City.

This will be the last regional elimination clash of the three that is being held. The regional round participants will need to go all out to impress the judges with their boerewors-making and cooking skills as only the first place winners of each of the 88 regional rounds will go on to battle it out against their provincial counterparts in ten provincial rounds that take place on Saturday,

September 17.

The first 33 winners were already announced on Saturday, August 13.

The first part of the remaining 55 regional elimination clashes took place earlier with the last elimination round being this Saturday.

At the first regional round held in Port Elizabeth on Saturday, August 13, Jacobus Verster from Algoa Park walked away as the winner. Septimus Sibongile Ntikinca from Motherwell came in second, while Sakkie Meiring from Kabega Park earned third place.

Jacobus won R1 200 Shoprite or Checkers meat vouchers and gift hampers from Coca Cola, All Gold and Simba, and will also compete in

the provincial round which will be held on Saturday, 17 September. This weekend’s event at Shoprite Stanford Square starts at 9.30am.

An independent judging panel will judge each regional round where prospective Champions have to braai 1 kg of their own-recipe boerewors. The competition ends on Saturday, October 8 when the provincial winners compete in braai-offs at Sun City’s Valley of Waves.

The Boerewors Champion will earn the sought-after 2011 Boerewors Crown and also drive away in a new Toyota Hilux 2.7 Double Cab Raised Body Raider. .

Die enigste oponthoud nou is die lewering van ’n sender. Sentech, die staatsbeheerde seinverspreider, moes die sender uit die buiteland bestel. Dié proses duur ongeveer vier maande.

Die Onafhanklike Kommunikasieowerheid van Suid-Afrika het vroeër reeds ’n uitsaailisensie vir dié gemeenskapstasie uitgereik.

Andile Qaba, direkteur van handel en beleggings in die metro, het op twee weke gelede se komiteevergadering oor ekonomiese ontwikkeling, toerisme en landbou gesê die metro het eenmalige finansiering van R4 miljoen beskikbaar gestel vir die stasie, waarna die raad sy eie inkomste moet genereer.

Zolile Siswana, uitvoerende direkteur van ekonomiese ontwikkeling, toerisme en landbou, het op die vergadering gesê die televisiestasie kan beslis selfonderhoudend wees.

Volgens hom wil hulle deur die televisiestasie onder meer plaaslike talent en nuus ’n wyer platform bied.

“Ons het navorsing gedoen en ander gemeenskapstelevisiestasies in Johannesburg en Kaapstad besoek

om te sien watter modelle hulle gebruik en aanpassings aan ons sakeplan gemaak.”

Die munisipaliteit het in Oktober verlede jaar reeds ’n veelsydige raad uit verskillende sektore aangestel wat verantwoordelik gaan wees vir die onafhanklike bestuur van die gemeenskaps-televisiestasie.

Fabbri and his side-chick Donna Africa will offer an evening of raucous laughter with a combination of something old and something new.

Nothing is sacred in this music and comedy romp which sees Fabbri reappraising some of his favourite characters from his hit shows “Toast and Nuts”.

Some new characters including the French Naked Chef, Phillip Follop and others are also introduced. Proving that the double dip recession forces people to do strange things, Fabbri disrobes his characters of their dignity as Follop looks down his nose at anything that is not French, presenting a questionable cooking master class.

The quick-witted Fabbri is a master of accents who brings out the funny side of life through his many hilarious characters, who seem to share an inability to perceive accurately exactly what is going on around them.

Outrageous consequences ensue as they try to compensate for their shortcomings.

Internationally famous belly­ dancer performs in PE AN internationally famous belly-dancer, living in Greece, is visiting Port Elizabeth in August and September.

Victoria Park High helps Coega Door of Hope VICTORIA Park High School pupils worked hard collecting nonperishable food items to fill a grocery trolley for the Coega Door of Hope Children’s Home in Sydenham, North End. The Coega Door of Hope’s Mama Gladys Panda and her staff provide a loving home environment to more than 30 children ranging from newborn to 18 years of age.

“These kids have been given a second chance in life as many of them found themselves in dire circumstances due to either illness or death of a parent, abandonment or extreme poverty.”

The school runs a feeding scheme and has more than ten “care” societies which make a difference in the community. Representatives of VP High School did the official handover to Panda earlier this month.

Mikaela geniet laaste dae van Mej. Tiener SA TANYA VAN ZYL DIE Hoërskool Pearson-leerder, Mikaela Oosthuizen (15), is die jongste meisie nóg om as Mej. Tiener Suid-Afrika gekroon te word, maar aan volwassenheid skiet daar géén tekort by hierdie tiener nie.

Mikaela sou in Oktober vanjaar Suid-Afrika in die Mej. Tiener Heelal-kompetisie in Guatemala in Suid-Amerika verteenwoordig het, maar weens probleme wat opgeduik het, moes sy ongelukkig onttrek.

Maar intussen geniet sy nog haar oorblywende dae as titelhouer, voor sy op 10 Desember vanjaar haar kroon aan haar opvolger moet oorhandig.

Die PE Express het met haar gesels oor haar jaar sover as Mej. Tiener SA. Wat is jou moeilikste uitdaging as Mej. Tiener SA-titelhouer?

Ek ervaar daagliks uitdagings wat gepaardgaan met my titel. Een van

die dinge wat ek die afgelope 10 maande geleer het, is dat tyd baie kos -baar is en dat daar altyd meer is om te doen as waarvoor daar tyd is.

Ek moes ook leer om die glans van Mej. SA Tiener te kombineer met my skoolverpligtinge en om my voete op die grond te hou. As gevolg van my buitemuurse verpligtinge is ek dikwels uitstedig, wat beteken dat ek skooldae mis en nie by al die skoolaktiwiteite kan inskakel nie.

Gelukkig ondersteun my skool my baie in die verband.

Wanneer jy sopas ’n netbalwedstryd gespeel het, kos dit motivering en dissipline om ’n uur later op jou beste te lyk tydens ’n fotosessie of TV-onderhoud.

Hoe balanseer jy jou besige lewe as Mej. Tiener SA met skool en buitemuurse aktiwiteite?

Ek het gewoond geraak daaraan om te “multi-task” en het al van kleins af geleer om te beplan en goeie tydsbestuur te hê. Omdat ek reeds skoonheids- en modelkompetisies op ’n jonger ouderdom gewen het, was dit nie regtig vir my so ’n groot aanpas-

sing toe ek as Mej. SA Tiener gekroon was nie.

Ek moes wel leer om sekere opofferings te maak, soos om my wiskunde-huiswerk op die vliegtuig te doen en om Saterdagaand ’n Mej. SA Tiener-funksie by te woon, eerder as om met my vriende te kuier.

Daar is baie voordele aan om as Mej. SA Tiener gekies te word. Jy ontmoet bekendes en word as ’n bekende beskou, met radiostasies en koerante wat gereed staan om onderhoude met jou te voer. Ek geniet dit ook om te reis.

Die feit dat ek mense ontmoet het en ’n positiewe verskil in hulle lewe gemaak het, is egter vir my die hoogtepunt van hierdie titel. Hulle is die mense wat my aanmoedig om aan te hou met al my werk. Ek geniet dit ook om skole te besoek en motiveringspraatjies te gee oor hoe belangrik goeie keuses is vir ’n tiener se toekoms.

Nie net het die titel vir my baie deure oopgemaak nie, maar dit het

ook vir my ’n platform gegee om ’n verskil in mense se lewens te maak.

Om Mej. Tiener SA te wees is egter nie net pret en plesier nie. My naweke is dikwels nie meer my eie nie en soms woon ek tot drie funksies op ’n naweek by. My betrokkenheid by ’n verskeidenheid van gemeenskapsprojekte hou my redelik besig.

Wat wil jy graag in die lewe bereik?

Walt Disney het gese: “As jy dit kan droom, kan jy dit bereik.” Ek wil graag ’n model, aktrise of TV-aanbieder word of selfs alles gekombineerd!

Die meeste van alles hoop ek om ’n goeie voorbeeld vir ander te stel, nie net deur my prestasies nie, maar ook deur die persoon wie ek is.

Wat is, volgens jou, jou grootste bate?

Niemand is perfek nie en skoonheid is altyd relatief. Ek dink my hare en my glimlag is my grootste bate, omdat dit baie uniek is en omdat ek dit gewoonlik so natuurlik as moontlik hou.

Ek wil glo dat ek ’n vriendelike en innemende persoonlikheid het en dat my strewe om ’n verskil te maak by ander ook in my persoonlikheid uitkom.

Ek probeer altyd vriendelik en plat-op-die-aarde wees en glo dat jy almal moet respekteer.

Drink baie water, dra altyd sonbrandroom saam met jou en gebruik daaglikse bevogtigers. As tiener wat deelneem aan sport is dit ook baie belangrik om jou gesig gereeld met ’n goeie reiniger te was. Verd-

Local ‘Ironman’ explores highs and lows of journey to triumph in his book PORT Elizabeth-born Brink Eksteen will next Wednesday launch a book which is a personal story of his life’s ups and downs which led him to start a ministry helping other men to be Ironmen in all senses of the word.

Eksteen’s Race of Faith is a testament to the indomitable nature of the human spirit – man’s unique ability to be “struck down, but not destroyed”.

The launch of this book is set to take place on August 31 at Mount Pleasant Hall.

The first part of the book tells the inspiring story of eight average men, all from Port Elizabeth, who undertake to complete one of the world’s most gruelling challenges in physical fitness – the Ironman South Africa 2010.

In the book most of them start out as unfit, overweight and completely unprepared to face what lies before them . . . Despite all the odds being

stacked against them, these ordinary guys stay the course and somewhere along the way find themselves irrevocably transformed, their lives forever changed.

The book goes on to tell of how what started out as one man’s vision has now become an entire ministry.

This ministry focuses on the human being as body, mind and spirit and emphasises the importance of physical and mental fitness in one’s journey to self-discovery.

The final part of the book provides the novice athlete with the benefit of Brink’s experience, exploring both mistakes made and lessons learnt throughout his training and subsequent successful completion of Ironman South Africa 2010. . Brink, who lives in Lorraine, went to school at Pearson High School.

He is a biokineticist running his wellness ministry full time.

He is also involved in the Pearson High Performance Centre.

Book on local painter Fred Page published A NEW book on Port Elizabeth artist Frederick (Fred) Hutchinson Page (1902 – 1984), considered to be one of South Africa’s foremost surrealist painters has been published.

Titled The Ringmaster of the Imagination, it is an inside view on the life and journey of the artist.

The book is written by Eastern Cape art biographer Jeanne Wright who was commissioned

by Page’s attorney and friend Cecil Kerbel and is the first comprehensive compilation of the artist’s work. Much of the work portrayed in the book has been drawn from private collections and therefore is revealed to the public for the first time.

Kerbel says this biography is

the realization of a lifelong ambition for him. “I am delighted that, at long last, Fred Page is receiving the recognition that he deserves.”

Page lived and worked for most of his life in Central in Port Elizabeth.

Using the buildings as a backdrop to a range of characters and narratives, he has documented with considerable accuracy, areas of the city’s architecture that reflect a specific time within the city’s history.

Reclusive by nature, Page didn’t receive much publicity during his lifetime. His subject matter was obscure and unfashionable for many years and did not hold much appeal for the general public.

His output has, however, subsequently been recognized as an important and unique reflection of not only the South African city he lived in but

also of an extraordinarily fertile and idiosyncratic imagination at work.

“Fred Page is an artist who has come in from under the radar to surprise me, as an author, with the range and diversity of his material.

He was uniquely South African and his passion for the city he chose to live in, revealed not only the imaginative world of his creative life as a painter, but also the poetic and fantastical side of life in Port Elizabeth as he perceived it,” says Wright.

The book is produced and printed entirely in Port Elizabeth and is available in a soft-cover edition with three hundred works in colour accompanied by an explanatory text.

Trip to Paris up for grabs in photo competition A WEEK-LONG trip to Paris and a solo exhibition in a Parisian gallery are up for grabs as the first prize in the Fondation Alliance Française’s International photography contest.

This is the organisation’s second International photography contest and it is open to amateur photographers. The theme is “Planet women”.

The Alliance Française of Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth are jointly organising the competition in South Africa.

Prizes include a trip to Paris for a week and a solo exhibition in a gallery in Paris, as well as an exhibition in galleries of the Alliance Française of Johannesburg and of Port Elizabeth.

A jury made up of local and professional artists will choose the best two photos, which will then compete in the international selection.

Another selection of photos will be chosen to be part of a collective exhibition, which will be exhibited at the Alliance of Johannesburg and of Port Elizabeth.

THREE very long weeks have passed since the Hungarian GP. Happily, it’s that time again, time for Formula 1 at the most classic venues of them all – SpaFrancorchamps.

It isn’t just Eau Rouge that makes Spa a classic. The double left-handed Pouhon corner is one where the driver can still make a difference.

A quick flick down to sixth gear and sling the car into the first lefthander, avoid the curb on the inside and allow the car to slice across the curb on the outside of the track before immediately flinging it left into the second part of Pouhon – all of it at supreme speed and ruthless concentration.

Several elevation changes and a twisty nature all combine to rank this as one of the most challenging tracks on the calendar. The combination of straights run at 300km/h and hairpin turns negotiated at 70km/h makes it the most complete test of a Formula 1 car.

Located in the foothills of the Ardennes Mountains, the famed Belgian circuit is a classic in the truest sense of the word.

Originally built in 1921 it remains one of the most classic racing tracks in the world and a firm favourite amongst many drivers and fans.

After the La Source hairpin a straightforward downhill plunge does little in preparation for the breathtaking Eau Rouge.

The stomach-churning rise in altitude renders the exit of this famous sequence completely blind; there is no possible way for the driver to see what might be waiting at the top. While Eau Rouge may no longer provide a technical

Somehow the Spa-Francorchamps circuit exists in a sort of micro-climate. It has often resulted in the track being completely dry on some parts while others are often found to be wet and slippery.

As more than 70% of the lap is spent at full throttle the Mercedes powered cars will most likely hold a straight line advantage over the likes of the Renault shod cars.

This could mean an easier time of trying to overtake for the boys from McLaren and Mercedes.

Red Bull, however, has shown to have a particular affinity for high speed corners over the course of the season. Bad news

Broubart Kowie Challenge Water Sports World by Michael Zoetmulder

THE annual Broubart Kowie Intercity Challenge canoe race takes place in Port Alfred on Saturday morning. Hosted by the Border Canoe Club and sponsored by Broubart Security, this 21-year-old event has become a very popular friendly challenge between the East London and Port Elizabeth paddlers.

The East London paddlers won the Intercity trophy in 2010 away from the PE paddlers who were the 2009 champions. The main event, starting at 10am, is the 24km K2 race with an 8km distance also included.

A guppies race will precede the main event, starting at 8.30am. The feature races are open to K2’s, K1’s and surf ski’s. All paddlers to meet at the Port Alfred Ski Boat Club. For further enquiries contact Margaret at 0 083 459 3568.

It was a disappointing weekend for the South African team which seemed to battle against the Hungarian heat and the intense atmosphere of the world championships. SA’s sprint queen Bridgitte Hartley fell tantalizingly short of securing her place for the London Olympics and re-opened the debate on the Olympic qualification process.

Hartley fell short in the semi-finals of her 500m K1 and was relegated to the ‘B’ final which she won in a blisteringly fast time which was eventually faster than the ‘A’ final winning time, but left her ranked tenth in the world, and out of the top eight Olympic qualification spots.

The favoured crew of Shaun Rubenstein and Michael Arthur also failed to secure an A finals spot, having to be content with racing for pride in the consolation C finals over the Olympic 200m distance.

“We are gutted,” said Rubenstein. “We raced are hearts out and went sub-33 seconds and lost the dice for fourth in a lunge with the Aussies Stephen Bird and Jesse Phillips.”

WELL, there you are – that’s the way it goes. Somehow the “touch... pause... and don’t engage” campaign aimed at supporting the All Blacks’ bid to win the rugby World Cup through sexual abstinence, didn’t get through to the team itself.

After a dashing start last Saturday, the Kiwis looked increasingly ragged and weary as the clock ticked on, before eventually losing this Tri-Nations clash with the Springboks 18-5 in Port Elizabeth.

All of this came about, it might be argued, as a result of a campaign by Telecom New Zealand to get the Kiwi public behind their boys in the tournament for the Webb Ellis Cup, kicking off on September 9.

Described as “typical tongue-in-cheek Kiwi humour”, it might have helped though if coach Graham Henry had explained to his team that, joke or otherwise, it was the Kiwi rugby public not the team the campaign was aimed at.

“Yes,” he might have added, “and the campaign’s only due to kick off Monday – so, lads, there’s no need to jump in boots and all, so to speak, to beat the cut-off date.”

From a New Zealand point of view, that’s how it looked. South African hearts practically thudded to a halt as poor defence twice threatened the Bok tryline in the opening min-

utes.

But thankfully as the defence tightened and the Springboks began to gel as a unit, that dreaded feeling ebbed away.

Earlier in the week on Twitter, or somesuch social networking site, Morne Steyn, restored to the starting line-up at flyhalf, had boldly stated: “If Jonny Wilkinson can do it for England and Percy Montgomery the same for us in France, I too can do it for South Africa.”

That’s confidence for you – and, as it turned out, he did just that in being responsible for every one of the Boks’ points.

It remains a slightly uncomfortable fact that the All Blacks scored the only try of the match – as it happened, their only points on the scoreboard – through centre, Richard Kahui.

This pinpoints a worrying deficiency if the Boks are successfully to defend the trophy they won in 2007 in France.

It is true that in tight encounters like a World Cup final, accurate goalkicking is often crucial. But scoring a try, here and there, can make the vital difference between success and failure – particularly when you have a Deadeye Dick as dependable as Morne Steyn to add the cherry on top, in the form of conversions.

Add the sort of rocklike defence they showed in PE to the dominance they are capable of at forward and there’s no reason why, as the Boks take control, the ball can’t be more productively spread for that most invaluable commodity, the try.

Given the opportunity the striking power of players like centres De Villiers and Fourie, wings Pietersen and Habana, could be stupendous. The dictionary defines that as “vastly important”, which makes it even better than awesome!

One last thing: Bismarck du Plessis must be recognised as the team’s top hooker.

The bitter disappointment on his face at being substituted so early in PE, said it all. It was silly. An insult.

Salvation Army to host Fun Run THE Salvation Army in Port Elizabeth will be hosting a Fun Run next month in aid of the needy.

The run is over 5 km and will start at the Lawson Brown Valley Fields in Roosevelt Road, Glend-

inningvale on September 10.

Participants can walk or run the 5 km race that starts at 7am.

Bulk entries of more than 50 entrants will pay only R15 to participate, as opposed to the required R20.

A cash prize of R2 000 will be

awarded to the school with the most entries.

The cut-off date for bulk entries will be September 7.

The funds raised by this event will go for practical service that meets human needs and transforms communities.

On the day of the Fun Run, there will be a station on site allowing people to donate non-perishable food items, second-hand clothing and blankets.
