Evacuation plan fuels anti­ nuclear protest

W

ILL there be a viable evacuation plan in case of nuclear disaster in Port Elizabeth?

Certain non-profit organisations say this is the question most likely to fuel their protest against the construction of the nuclear energy plant in Thyspunt.

With the proposed multi-billion rand nuclear plant just kilometres away from PE and surrounding towns, three NGOs have come out strongly against the government’s plans, saying that there are no proposed emergency evacuation measures, amongst other concerns.

One of these NGO’s, NoPEnuke, will host two public sessions on August 16 and 19 in Port Elizabeth, highlighting the variety of risks directly and indirectly connected to nuclearpowered energy.

In response to questions by PE Express on Monday, Tony Stott Eskom Senior Manager, said that Eskom “wants to put it on record that there is no final decision that has been taken on whether a nuclear power station will be built at Thyspunt,”.

in the EIA process. Currently the draft Environmental Impact Report identifies Thyspunt as the preferred site. To date, no fatal flaws have been identified in the EIA. A revised draft EIR is expected to be issued later this year or early next year for public comment,” said Stott.

According to Stott, Eskom will be required to provide a nuclear emergency plan. “The National Nuclear Regulator will not issue a nuclear licence for any nuclear facility unless it is satisfied that a viable nuclear emergency plan has been developed and can be implemented.

This is in accordance with international standards and requirements,” said Stott.

According to earlier statements by the National Department of Minerals and Energies, the plant will be highly beneficial to the community of PE. But NGO’s say this will not be the case.

NoPEnuke and Coalition Against Nuclear Energy (CANE) say dangers in having a plant so close to residential areas can prove disastrous to public health and the region’s struggling economy.

NoPEnuke, a project run by Bay Eco Voice, is fighting against the construction of this plant and says they have studies which dispute government’s claim that Thyspunt would be a viable site for nuclear energy.

The sand dunes that it would be built around are within a 100year floodline which makes this extremely dangerous should there be any floods like those in recent years. Hunneyball said their fears were mostly about the lax way Eskom and government were handling the evacuation process should there be any incidents.

Cane Chairman, Mike Kantey, said the nuclear emissions and waste along the N2 national road in Thyspunt posed serious health risks and could irrevocably damage tourism in the region.

Kantey said he was busy preparing for “battle” against the upcoming environmental approval of the nuclear facility.

“Numerous organisations of nuclear activ-

ists, environmentalists, dairy farmers, chokka fishermen and ordinary residents have been mobilised to fight against the construction of the nuclear facility,”said Kantey.

Thyspunt Alliance head, Trudi Malan,who is also vehemently opposed to the nuclear plants construction in the area,said, “Our focus is on the Environmental Impact Report and not necessarily on the choice of electricity generation. As a community we need to engage with the effects that a massive industrial development like the proposed development at Thyspunt will have on the area during construction and years later.”

According to Stott the Environmental Impact Assessment is in progress – more than 25 specialist studies are being undertaken as part of this EIA, including studies on agriculture and marine impacts.

“To date, no impacts that cannot be mitigated have been identified in these studies.

A revised draft EIR is expected to be issued later this year or early next year for public comment,” said Stott.

The public meetings will take place at Elizabeth Place in Newton Park at 6pm.

Heese het gesê Gauteng was in dié ses maande die provinsie waar die tweede meeste betogings teen dienslewering aangeteken is. ’n Aantal munisipale gebiede in KwaZulu-Natal het ook al hoe meer betogings gehad en het nou meer betogings as wat in die Wes-Kaap plaasgevind het.

“Behalwe vir die sogenaamde toiletoorlog in die Wes-Kaap, het die aantal protesaksies in die Wes-Kaap vanjaar afgeneem,” het Heese gesê.

Municipal IQ neem protesaksies in ag wat teen munisipale dienslewering gemik is.

Heese het gesê dit is bemoedigend dat

daar vanjaar landwyd minder protesaksies aangeteken is in die wintermaande, in vergelyking met verlede jaar.

“Die protes bly egter ’n kommerwekkende tendens – dit word gereeld met geweld uitgevoer.”

So vergelyk provinsies vir die eerste ses maande vanjaar: In die Oos-Kaap is 23% van die protesaksies aangeteken, in Gauteng 22%, KwaZulu-Natal 14%, die WesKaap 12%, Vrystaat 10%, Mpumalanga 8%, Noordwes 7%, Noord-Kaap en Limpopo elk 2%.

Woolard wins Nations Cup at world champs REPORTER PORT ELIZABETH’S Joshua Woolard stayed his own course to take line honours in the Nations Cup during the RS Tera World Championships in Weymouth, England, on Friday.

Representing South Africa in the Tera Sport class, the 17-year-old Cape Recife learner outmanoeuvred junior sailors from five countries over five rounds of the one-lap elimination event.

Woolard, who normally races in the largersailed Pro class, triumphed over the short and technical course by choosing a surprising tack and racing apart from the rest of the field.

“I just wanted to get off the start as fast as possible and stay out of everyone’s bad air so that I could have the fastest boat on the water,” he said.

“I was reading the wind and saw more of it on the side I went to. In the end it paid off and helped me.”

After winning the first race, in which Uruguay was eliminated, Woolard jumped the start of round two and had to do a 360-degree turn before setting off in pursuit of the four remaining boats.

Ignoring spectators’ cries to tack, he sailed in a different direction to close the gap faster than expected and sneak into a surprise second place, knocking Austria out of the race.

This maverick strategy proved even more successful in the third race when he crossed the line first to eliminate his Spanish rival.

With just England, New Zealand and South Africa remaining in the penultimate round, Woolard once again defied expectations as he pushed on the inside line to nose the host na-

tion out of the competition.

In the nail-biting final, he was sitting just inside the Kiwi sailor heading into the last buoy. The commentator had already called the race in New Zealand’s favour when Woolard tacked within sight of the finish to take the trophy for Team South Africa.

“It’s an amazing feeling of utter happiness and pride in winning the Nations Cup for my country,” he said. “I love this type of sailing

as it’s short and fast and you always have to be on your toes.”

Woolard finished the championships in 15th position overall, with Grey High School’s Justin Harth placed 40th out of 51 boats in the Pro fleet.

This year’s world championships were the largest ever, with 122 sailors from nine countries participating. South Africa will host the 2014 event in Sedgefield.

Booysenpark Primêr se Juffrou Swarts groet ná 44 jaar se onderwys ZELDRÉ SWANEPOEL OM onderwys te gee, is ’n voorreg. Só voel juffrou Sheila Swarts, wat ná 44 jaar in die onderwys die tuig neergelê het. Sy was 29 jaar lank by Booysenpark Primêre Skool, waar sy die pos van adjunkhoof beklee het.

“Onderwys is die genesis van alle beroepe. Dit is ’n voorreg om ’n opvoeder en inspirasie te wees, en om kennis oor te dra wat sal bou op die fondasie van ons toekomstige leiers,” het sy by die afskeidseremonie gesê wat die skool se leerders onlangs vir haar gehou het.

Swarts het haar onderwysloopbaan in 1969 by die Morawiese Skool in Fairview (nou Overbaakens) begin en moes as gevolg van gedwonge

verskuiwings in die sewentigerjare na Booysenpark skuif en in 1984 het sy by Booysen Park Primêr begin skoolhou.

“Ek het die veranderinge in die onderwysstelsel aanskou, waarvan sommige ’n negatiewe impak op die ontwikkeling van ons jeug gehad het.”

Swarts het bygevoeg dat dissipline in skole skerp agteruit gegaan het met die wegdoen van lyfstraf wat oor die jare heen die algemeenste vorm van dissiplinering was. “Ek glo dat dissipline – indien reg toegepas – onderwysers in staat sal stel om meer effektief onderwys te gee.”

Swarts gaan die eerste ruk ná haar aftrede eers net rus en sien uit na drafsessies langs die see. Volgende jaar gaan sy oorsee om vir familie te kuier. Swarts, ’n weduwee, het twee volwasse kinders, Earl en Tarryn.

Ladies to bare it all for charity THE Port Elizabeth Musical and Dramatic Society (Pemads) will be causing quite a stir at the end of August, as some well-known thespians decide to bare it all in the “dazzlingly funny, shamelessly sentimental and utterly captivating” - Calendar Girls.

The production will be staged at Pemads Little Theatre from August 21 to 31 and is in the very capable hands of award-winning director, Lesley Barnard. A strong cast has been assembled and this is the opportunity to see Rose Cowpar, Yolande Farrow, Holly Milne, Vanessa Smith, Hilary Coombe-Davis, Tanya Taylor, Liz Yates, Isobel McTiffin, Helen Wilkins, Emily Bradley, Mark Farrow, Jason Perry, Anton Steyn and Robert van den Ordel strut their stuff.

Calendar Girls shot to fame in 2003 when the movie version, starring Helen Mirren and Julie Walters, brought to life this delightful mixture of pathos and comedy.

Based on the true story of eleven Women’s Institute members who posed nude for a calendar to raise money for the Leukemia Research Fund, Calendar Girls has become the fastest-selling play in British theatre history.

In accordance with the rights, funds will be raised for cancer research through the sale of a calendar, where the cast will bare it all in the name of the arts! The calendar will be sold at the theatre during the course of the production, with all funds going to the Aloe Igazi Foundation – Dr Neil Littleton’s Haematology-Leukemia Unit.

Bookings have opened at Computicket and tickets cost R75. Patrons who have purchased membership books may use their second ticket in the PEMADS Membership booklet. The membership tickets must and may only be exchanged for actual tickets at Computicket at the Opera House. A popular local radio station is asking school pupils to nominate their most outstanding teacher to celebrate the contributions educators make at schools daily.

In conjuction with many womens month celebratiosn around Nelson Mandela Bay, Kingfisher Fm is running a promotion called ‘Teachers Appreciation’ which recognises extraordinary educators who go above and beyond the call of duty in both their communities and thier schools.

Kingfishers Ethan Black,said the station would be eccepting all nominations from pupils with a motivation letter detailling why they should be chosen.

Black said,“World Teacher Day is on the October,5, and I thought it would be a great idea to remember and honour the role and importance of teachers in the classroom and society, leading up to World Teacher’s Day.” Black said one of the stories that touched him and his team was that of a young girl who was helped by her teacher to pass metric after she had fallen pregnant

“This story is one of many that shows that even though teachers are loosing the respect thet had , there are some carring educators who still need to be praised for their hard work,” said Black.

Black said they would like to encourage students to email them at Kingfisher Fm and nominate teachers who have made an impact in their lives and give reasons why.“We will then liaise with the schools, contact the teachers to award them & recognise their outstanding contributions,” he said.

Educators who have been awarded the Teachers Appreciation award will then be featured on Kingfisher FM where listeners will also hear about the teachers community projects.

Black said the promotion would be running till the end of August on a trial basis, “The feature happens every Monday during the education slot,“Beyond the Classroom” on the lunch hour show on Kingfisher FM.” Amongst the prises winners will be treated to a R100 voucher from Dulce in boardwalk. Travelling Rhino visits Cotswold Prep REPORTER THE rhino-poaching crisis is a real world problem that should be brought to the attention of all South Africans, young and old.

Recently Grade 2’s at Cotswold hosted the Travelling Rhino, Lilitha, as part of a global project started by an educator at Elkanah House School in Cape Town, Karen Stadler.

Stadler visited the Kruger National Park in July 2012. There she and her family watched five rhinos drinking at a water hole.

Stadler was so struck by the sad plight of these beautiful creatures that she decided to start an awareness campaign amongst students world wide.

She had five stuffed toy rhinos made – one for each of the major continents - and through the Global Classroom she invited teachers around the world to host one of these rhinos.

ed the Cotswold Grade 2’s to educate them on why rhino poaching is such a problem and why everyone who cares about our natural heritage should be aware and speak out for rhinos if they would like to keep these creatures for future generations.

The Grade 2’s made a beautiful doodle picture of a rhino with a message. They also read about rhinos and they made a presentation with their own messages to poachers.

The class then presented their work to the rest of the children at Cotswold to raise awareness in the whole community. After his two-week stay at Cotswold, Lilitha was sent on to his next port of call in East London.

Simon and Garfunkel tribute at Old Grey CENTRESTAGE is bringing their Simon and Garfunkel tribute ‘Feeling Groovy’ back to Old Grey for two nights on August 15 and 16, following a remarkable response to the original run.

“The feedback from audiences who saw this show was overwhelming”, said Centrestage’s Gary Hemmings.

“This show displayed so much heart and fantastic musicality that it immediately became one of my all-time favourite productions which I have been proud to present”, he continued.

The seven-piece musical ensemble pays tribute to the song-writing duo in a way in which the respect for and adoration of the music is palpable.

De Javu dance crew in top ten of reality dance show LIZEKA TANDWA A PORT Elizabeth Hip-Hop dance crew will be showcasing their dance skills after they made it as the top ten finalist on a popular eTV reality show.

De Javu dance crew was selected amongst hundreds other groups to showcase their unique style in the well known Step- Up or Step-Out reality dance show.

Crew leader,Meryl Stanley, said she was overjoyed when the judges named them as one of the participants who will be seen weekly on national television.

“This is a career step for us as a team and this

also validates our hard work and efforts as a dance crew. We are over-whelmed by the support we have from home and we want to ensure that PE is represented and people see the talent that we have in the city,” said Stanley.

The team, consisting of three girls and one young men, are no strangers to critical acclaim,having been chosen as the three dance crews to represent the country in Las Vegas at the Unites States of America last year.De Javu say this is by far the best honour they have had as a team.

De Javu believe their creativity and dexterity to perform various stunts, puts them above the rest. The group was launched six years ago with three girls, with Eben Dirkse joining the team

when they met at the group’s dance academy.

“Dancing is my life and I am happy to be rewarded after all my hard work. The teams that we competed against were phenomenal but we managed to beat most of them and this is proof that dancing can be a career,” said De Javu dancer Dirkse.

With over 4.7 million viewers tuning in each week,for the past two years, Step Up or Step Out production team say they are expecting a much bigger audience this year. eTV Publicity Advisor, Melisa Fredericks, said, “Over the past two years the show has brought back authentic street dance to the forefront of South African culture by showcasing some of the country’s most dynamic dance art-

ists.” The series features a colourful array of hopeful dance starts,all vying for their chance to strut and perform on stage hoping to win viewers’ hearts and a R70 000 cash prize.

Baby of the Year competition in full swing THE annual Walmer Park Baby of the Year Competition is in full swing with parents from in and around Nelson Mandela Bay flocking to the Walmer Park Shopping Centre to enter their little ones.

You can enter your bouncing bundle of joy into the Baby of the Year competition by visiting the photographic station set up in the Edgars Court in Walmer Park Shopping Centre.

Photographic entries are taken every weekend (Friday till Sunday) until Sunday 1 September, from 10am till 2pm daily to capture your little star’s winning smile.

Entry into the competition is R50 from which you receive two jumbo photographs and R5 of every entry is donated to Uviwe Child and Youth Services (previously PE Childline).

One of the two jumbo photographs is displayed at the photographic station until 1 September where family members, friends and shoppers get to see your little one’s gorgeous entry picture.

The age categories for the competition are 0-6 month, 7-12 months and 13-18 months. Ten finalists are chosen in each of the categories from which the top three are announced at a fun-filled prize giving event held in the Walmer Park

Shopping Centre Promotions arena on Saturday the 7th of September 2013.

Fantastic prizes are awarded to the top tots in each category from our amazing sponsors.

The prizes for our top winners include incredible shopping vouchers from Walmer Park Shopping Centre, as well as some gift Vouchers from Pick n Pay. Moms can look forward to playing dress up with fashion vouchers from Naartjie, Ackerman’s and Edgars. Dis-Chem Pharmacies and Purity will be spoiling the lucky winners in each category with amazing prize hampers to use at home and on the go.

Button optimistic for Belgian GP McLaren have said that they believe their 2012 car “overperformed” towards the end of last season.

Team Principal Martin Whitmarsh said that the 2012 McLaren outdelivered what the team expected from data compiled through its wind tunnel model – meaning that the 2012 car was better than its wind tunnel counterpart.

In 2013 McLaren, by their own standards, has woefully underperformed. This, Whitmarsh said, was just a case of luck not going the Woking based teams way However, despite McLaren’s struggles in 2013 Jenson Button believes that the Belgian Grand Prix could be the turning point for his team.

JB believes that the layout of the Spa-Francorchamps circuit will allow his team to show the progress that has been made. “I think the next race you’ll see us a lot closer to the top teams, and fighting with them. I’m looking forward to Spa already.”

Lotus chairman Gerard Lopez has scoffed at rumours that his F1 team is in financial trouble. Lopez purchased the Renault team in 2009 and is adamant that the reported 120 million Euro debt is being misunderstood.

He laughed off suggestions that staff had not been paid and refuted any rumours of employees threatening a strike at the Enstone based factory. While Lopez has denied the lack of payment, Lotus team principal Eric Boullier confirmed on a previous occasion that driver, Kimi Raikkonen, had been paid “a few days late” by the team.

While vehemently denying these reports, Lopez emphasised that the team has enough resources to keep up with the development of the E21 in the second half of the season.

Despite the fact that the time for major upgrades has gone, the team is believed to be bringing a new front wing to the Belgian GP; and Lopez is adamant that the development will not end there.

Lopez, the co-owner of Genii Capital, stressed the investments that have been made to the F 1 team since taking over. “It had a 50 per

cent windtunnel, now it’s 60 per cent. The team didn’t have a driver-in-the-loop simulator, it does now. It didn’t have a gearbox dyno, now it has. So it has a bunch of things that it didn’t have even as a works team. As they say in other sports, you do your talking on the field and I guess we do our talking on the track.”

Roadtest: Audi’s new A3 Sportback GERRY GERICKE The Audi A3 Sportback is a five-door version of the three-door hatchback.

But with the added doors there are also other things that it offers more of i.e. its wheelbase is 2.5 cm longer than the three-door giving a surprising amount of extra legroom in the rear seats. In addition, it offers a bit more boot space, too, not much, but it is bigger by some 30 litres with a boot of 380 litres. That is more than the BMW 1 series, the new Mercedes A-Class, and the Volvo V40. What’s more, under the boot floor is a hidden compartment allowing you to tuck valuable items out of sight.

Comfort on long distances is guaranteed by the supple ride. It is more comfortable than the three-door, probably because of its longer wheel base flattening out the bumps and potholes, but also likely due to the suspension settings chosen for our test car.

The A3 Sportback with the 1600 cm3 diesel engine is one of the least powerful Audi models that I have tested, yet with the enormous torque of 250 Newton Metres developed by the turbocharged diesel engine and combined with the seven-speed automatic gearbox it is an extremely lively compact family sedan. The combination makes it the pick of the range.

I had the opportunity to test the A3 on a trip between PE and East London and despite some spirited driving, the fuel consumption never exceeded 6 litres per 100 km, which makes for a very economical car.

Road holding is impeccable, especially on our bumpy roads, whilst the cabin is very quiet inside despite the 4 cylinder diesel being a little noisy at low revs.

There is no doubt that the Audi 7-speed automatic gearbox is the smoothest and the best I have ever tested. I did however, miss the provision of paddles behind the steering wheel which would transform the Audi into an F1-like gear changing machine. The gearbox is brilliant and well worth the small surcharge over the manual version.

With regard to the ergonomics, it is about time that manufacturers get their heads together to achieve some sort of logic in respect of dash layout and instrumentation. A bewildering assortment of knobs and controls greets the unsuspecting first time driver in this car. Patience and time behind the wheel, however, will eventually allow the driver to become familiar with all the controls.

Inside the well appointed interior, it is all about comfort and luxury. Seats are covered in a durable cloth and beautifully supportive. The driver’s seat can be adjusted for reach and

height, along with the steering wheel which has similar up-and-down, as well as in-and-out adjustments.

VERDICT: Audi is one of the premium manufacturers and it is pointless to moan about the cost of owning one of the models. One cannot fault the quality or technology that exists in the German machine. I would suspect very few will be bought by private individuals due to the very high costs involved, but for those fortunate few who get the company to pay, we wish you all of the good luck you deserve and happy motoring.

That price includes the optional Navigation module, 17” alloy wheels, music interface, Xenon headlights and cruise control. To give you an example for comparison, a Garmin or TomTom portable GPS Navigational device costs about R2,500 as opposed to the factory fitted option at R22,200, so there you are, the choice is yours! As with all Audi models, however, quality is the name of the game and also being a test car it was fitted with all the optional extras which, of course, add a substantial increase to the purchase price.

The happiest 5k on the planet THE internationally acclaimed, The Color Run™ 5k fun run, hits the streets of Port Elizabeth on Sunday, September 1, and all indications are that this event will be a sell-out before the end of the month.

Search YouTube for The Color Run and you’ll see why this event is dominating the world fun run scene. In 2012 over 600 000 participants took part in this event around the world and the event has over 650 000 Facebook fans and with over 4 million views on YouTube it’s little wonder why most families around the world want a part of this happiness.

In her centennial year, PE will welcome in the Spring of 2013 with a massive explosion of colour as never seen before as 5 tons of coloured powder will welcome the first-ever The Color Run™ onto African soil. Known the world over as a fun, family-friendly run that celebrates healthiness, happiness, individuality, and giving back; bringing together communities to create a spectacular five-kilome-

tre-long canvas of colour.

Participants, who are encouraged to wear all white on the day, will encounter “Color” explosions at each of the kilometre marks along the route. These bursts of colour are basically food grade cornstarch and are 100% natural and safe however, as with any substance, participants may want to keep it out of their eyes. Some “Color Runners” opt to wear glasses or goggles for their eyes and use a bandana or dust mask for their mouths. At the Finish Festival, which should last several hours, the finishers will do a colour throw every 15 minutes to celebrate new runners coming in.

The event is open to all ages - if you can cover (running, jogging, walking, strolling) the 5km of The Color Run™ course then you can absolutely take part, Kids 10 and under can run with an adult FREE of charge and do not need to register. Strictly no dogs or pets are permitted in the race or festival area.

Runners will receive a custom The Color Run™ race shirt and tattoo, a bag of Color, race number, “Color Runner™” finisher sweat band, and Sponsor Goodies. Participants will be emailed about 10 days prior to the race with information on dates and locations for the Packet Pick-up Party!!

Movie scriptwriter couldn’t have done better YOU KNOW the expression that describes how in an argument you had “everything including the kitchen sink” thrown at you? It was a bit like that in last weekend’s TV kickoff of the rugby Currie Cup – a total of 240 minutes, divided into three 80-minute stanzas that, while not always of the highest quality, mostly bristled with an intensity that left you quite breathless.

It started on Friday night at Durban’s Kings Park with the Sharks taking on Griquas in a match which the locals were generally expected to make a meal of. It didn’t turn out that way.

In a finish that would have done Hollywood scriptwriters proud, the best was kept for last, with the lowly visitors waiting for the final hooter before scoring the winning try to level matters at 30-apiece.

Still to come, of course, was the conversion.

But the scriptwriter had just the man for the job as ace goalkicker Nico Scheepers stepped up to convert the try by burly replacement Carel Greef in the 82nd minute.

NMMU to host intervarsity LIZEKA TANDWA NELSON Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) is all set to host this year’s intervarsity tournament this weekend where teams of all universities in the province will be competing in all sporting codes.

Team MMMU have been practising in full force for the clash against Rhodes, Walter Sisulu (WSU) and Forte universities. The muchanticipated tournament will be hosted by NMMU with hundreds of students expected to converge in the city.

NMMU Communications Manager, Debbie Derry, said they are expecting to host hundreds of students from all over the province with many events planned around the sports tournament.

Derry said “Apart from all the sporting codes like rugby, volleyball, netball, hockey, golf, surfing, soccer and squash, the students will also vie for honours in ballroom dancing, debating and moot court.”

With the pressure for NMMU to defend the title as the overall winner for the past eight years team managers say they are more than ready to showcase the ‘viserlity’ of the different teams.

“We’re hoping to repeat the successes of the past at NMMU and also give students a competitive, but fun experience,” said NMMU Director of Sport Dr Richard Stretch.

NMMU Netball team manager, Theresa Leroux, said she was positive that her team

would receive a good outcome at the games.

“We feel confident as a team. Most of our players are already professionals playing for the province amd some representing the country. This is testament to our team’s hardwork,” she said.

Leroux said her biggest opponents at the game are Rhodes University as they have struggled in most times against them.
