Coega boosts property prices REPORTER

THE SMALL, upmarket coastal suburbs of

BlueWater Bay and Swartkops are poised for significant growth on the back of ongoing job creation and new development at the nearby Coega Industrial Development Zone (IDZ).

According to Ian Olivier, area principal of Pam Golding Properties in Port Elizabeth, who says Coega, in its constant, successful pursuit of new investors and projects, is driving up demand for accommodation in neighbouring residential areas.

This is endorsed by Ayanda Vilakazi, head of marketing and communications at the Coega Development Corporation, who says it’s a common trend for people to choose to live close to where they work, to avoid stress, high costs and long travel times/distances.

“As the Coega IDZ grows, we are very likely

to see more and more people flocking to this hub of industrial development.

“The core IDZ development area of 6 400ha is filling up and a significant number of mega projects is on the way to fill the remaining 4 000ha – including PetroSA’s R70 billion Project Mthombo, the liquid bulk tank farm relocation, GDF Suez of France’s open cycle gas turbine, the deepwater Port of Ngqura upgrade and others – making residential areas near the Coega IDZ a prime property investment area,” said Vilakazi.

Vilakazi said this is spurring non-industrial growth through commercial enterprise.

“For example, a major shopping centre is planned near the Vulindlela Accommodation and Conference Centre in Motherwell, an exciting development that shows that industrial growth is matched by commercial demand,” he added.

with an estimated R5 billion to R7 billion spend per annum pouring into the region, this will be matched by incoming skilled, semiskilled and unskilled labour, and there will be an increase in people looking for short and long-term accommodation with a desire for amenities, services and lifestyle offerings,” said Vilakazi.

According to Olivier, Blue Water Bay and Swartkops were traditionally bought into by young and middle-aged families seeking a coastal lifestyle, offsetting the daily work commute against the pleasure of living away from the hustle and bustle of city life in a place where residents know each another. “Now, however, as South Africa’s largest IDZ goes from strength to strength, the local buyer profile is expanding to include middle and upper Coega management from large companies such as Discovery Health, which brought with it about 500 personnel.”

The challenge is going to be catering for this demand, believes PGP resident agent Phyllis Magda, who says there are only currently about 700 houses in both BlueWater Bay and neighbouring Swartkops.

Already increasingly difficult to find, are entry-level priced properties, typically twobedroom, one-bathroom townhouses that start at around R700 000, she continues.

The average selling price, which according to Magda is R1.6 million, buys a freestanding family home usually within strolling distance of the beach and comprising three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a double garage.

The area also includes an impressive selection of luxury homes, some with price tags of more than R5 million and up to 800 square metres in size. These inevitably offer four or five bedrooms, four or five bathrooms, four garages and a pool, as well as fine finishes, sea views and easy, if not direct, access to the best beaches.

Metro’s Roland Williams appointed to media board REPORTER NELSON Mandela Bay Municipal Communications Director, Roland Williams, has been appointed by President Jacob Zuma to the Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA) Board from January until December 2016.

Williams who is a community activist and serves as the Head of Communications in the Municipality, said his roots are deeply entrenched in community and developmental structures, being exposed to and involved in this environment since the tender age of 14.

MDDA CEO, Lumko Mtimde, said Williams is a fiercely loyal and passionate developmental activist. “As a regular contributor to national, local and community media, the press sometimes refers to him as an incomparable, indefatigable, uncompromising “spin doctor” who is always quick to defend and propagate developmental decisions, programmes and policies of the public sector. Always well-groomed and often seen (and covered in the local media) with his wife in social circles, he is a “think-tank”

who is consistently called upon to develop policies, strategies and programmes for media and governance issues, as well as to manage and coordinate developmental work in Nelson Mandela Bay, especially in the media and communications arena,” said Mtimde.

Mtimde said Williams brings a wealth of knowledge in a diverse range of subjects to the MDDA Board, as a highly qualified BA Social Sciences graduate from NMMU and is currently reading for a Masters in Conflict Management and International Relations.

“A highly skilled individual with more than 25 years’ experience in management, he has made contributions to inter-alia the Local Government Transitional Act, the LGCS (Local Government Communications Strategy), the MDDA Act and various other public sector and media policy papers and long-term plans,” added Mtimde.

Williams is currently the editor of community publications. He serves on the COGTA/SALGA/GCIS National Communications Task Team and is the Regional Convenor of the Progressive Professionals Forum (PPF).

Summerwood parents pay for new classrooms REPORTER SUMMERWOOD Primary School parents in Port Elizabeth, have shown their commitment to their children by paying for the construction of eight new classrooms at the school.

The buildings were completed on November 14 and are ready for the new academic year. Five of the venues will be used for academic classrooms and the other three will be used for a second computer lab for Grades 4 to 7 children, a visual arts centre and the last one will be used for a performing arts centre.

“We are busy creating a valuable set of puzzle pieces for our children to collect at school which will provide them with the skills needed for a holistic development,” said the headmaster William Foaden.

financial control were executed by school management and parents pledged their expertise free of charge by assisting with construction work.

Parents were involved in organising fund raisers, including a fun walk, a wine and deli evening at the Raddison Blu Hotel, while the children got involved with participating in civvies days, cake sales, dances and spell-athons. “This was a huge team effort by all in the Summerwood family”, said Foaden.

The puzzle pieces go beyond the high benchmark of academics already established at the school and include art, computers, performing arts, sport, and spiritual aspects.

The 2014 academic year will see some new action plans as the school’s management team and staff implement their slogan, “The year of the child”.

“This is our plan to ensure that we focus all of our efforts on our most important asset, the children,” said Foaden.

NCEBA DLADLA EMOTIONS ran high when St Joseph’s RC School teachers bade farewell to their beloved secretary, Anita O’Donoghue, when schools closed at the end of last year.

“She has served the school loyally for 13 years and is a perfect example of the true face of the school,” said St Joseph’s RC school teacher, Mary White.

White described O’Donoghue as a friendly, calm, efficient and helpful person who would be missed by all.

According to White, O’Donoghue was never seen without a smile on her face, no matter how much stress there was. “We are very sad that Anita decided to retire. But we send her out to take her well deserved rest with her family,” said school principal Holly Allen, adding that O’Donoghue would be missed by all the pupils, parents and staff alike.

“She is the perfect lady at all times. We wish her well in her retirement,” said Allen proudly.

Dolla Sapeta tackles his midlife ‘colour’ on gallery walls REPORTER DOLLA Sapeta’s first solo exhibition in his home city of Port Elizabeth in 15 years has been met with praise and respect by the local arts industry.

The exhibition “The Midlife Colour” runs until January 24 at the Athenaeum in Central.

Sapeta has pulled together a part-retrospective of his work from the past 15 years from private collections, including that of the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA), Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Museum (NMMM) and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU).

Sapeta said the collection takes viewers on a journey through a vibrant Red Location that is no longer, which he painted in the 1990s, all the way through to the stark, but

colourful pieces he is currently working on.

“The exhibition conjures a sense of isolation in its recognisable stylised Afro-pop expression, dealing with topics such as the despair of HIV/Aids, dogma, politics and inner reflection, all captured through vivid, but insulated township scenes,” he said.

Sapeta has been dedicated to the arts from a young age, where he drew and sold comic books to his friends and attended drawing classes in a New Brighton garage under the guidance of the legendary George Pemba on Saturdays.

Commenting on the collection, Louwrens Westraad, fellow artist and collaborator, who opened the exhibition said: “Whether you decide to remember the Dolla who lectured PE College art students for more than five years, who has exhibited his paintings, drawings and photographs internationally, or created the Fish Bird public artwork on the Donkin Reserve as part of the MBDA’s Route 67 honouring Madiba, or for that matter as the published poet, writer, or the humble, down to earth man whose art hangs around you, it’s your choice to make, and in my opinion this is the true value of Dolla’s work-he allows you to decide.”

“Padkos” promises to be a project quite unlike Cox has ever produced before. Having built his entire career around an original work-only ethic, with only one or two rare deviations, Cox has decided to do an almost entirely, album of covers.

But not just any old cover tunes-these will be all only South African tunes. Songs and melodies from Cox’s life journey that he grew along with and loved and was inspired by, much of it shared by most South Africans from anywhere within our multifaceted culture, all of it is performed in the guitar style that has made Cox a widely known and respected musician in SA and well beyond its borders. These include songs such as Bright Blue’s “Weeping”, “Jabulani” by PJ Powers and Juluka’s “Impi”.

Cox says, “I absorbed a lot of SA music on lengthy road trips. On the road, car packed to the rafters with gear; on my way out to yet another destination, another show; always padkos packed nicely, such an important ingredient on any road trip and nothing like scoffing it on the road! The music was always there and I listened broadly to everything SA had to offer and I love so many of these tunes as do most of my fellow Sefricans. It got me thinking that padkos is just one tiny thing in amongst a myriad of others that every one of us has in common in South Africa; there is in fact so much we have in common, even amongst those who are under the politically induced delusion that they need to hate each other...that and the miracle of music...”

And so “Padkos” the album was born. The album will be a mixture of solo guitar playing and ensemble, with a few guests brought in to give the padkos a few extra spices and flavours, ingredients sourced from the guitarist’s favourite SA musos.

So far there are just two original tunes written: the title track, “Padkos” which is a tearaway little three-chord foot-tapper and “Long Walk to Nkandla”, which is strangely enough, also a foottapper and has as some would imagine, somewhat darker moments and performed on Cox’s earth-shattering baritone guitar.

Cox’s live show promises to be all the above combined with his jaw-dropping guitar skills and an overarching sense of infectious humour that transforms any of his live performances into an absolute must see.

Popular party venue reaches out to children’s charities LIZEKA TANDWA AFTER hosting a successful children’s Christmas party for Bethel Safe Haven for abandoned and abused kids, The Pop Shoppe owner said she is determined to do even more for her community which includes more charity work for the home, as well as other havens.

The Pop Shoppe Owner, Candice Smith, who has been involved with various charities in the past, decided at the end of last year to also give back to needy kids in the city.

“Because we have a lovely kids’ party venue, I thought it would be fitting to host a Christmas party for needy kids. A month before the party we put up a Christmas tree at our reception area with two cards for each child with all their details, as well as a photograph.

“We then asked customers to sponsor the child’s present by purchasing the card for R50.

The customers then had a keepsake – and they got to write a personal card for the child. These cards went quickly and soon we were able to go and purchase wonderful gifts which were life size singing dolls for the girls and large racing cars for the boys, as well as outfits for each one,” said Smith.

Smith said Bethel Safe Haven houses 9 children (who have been abandoned or abused) in their care ranging from 2 to 6 years old.

“This year we will be doing various charity drives which will include an Easter Egg hunt in April for the children from Bethel Safe Haven. At our first birthday celebration in May we will be doing a charity drive for Yokhusela Haven for Abused Women and Children.

“We are also looking to get involved in community development by offering opportunities to entrepreneurs in the local community to show their wares to corporate buyers. We will also be hosting a Winter Fashion Show with proceeds to go to charity. We are always open to hosting charity functions so if a customer approaches us for venue hire we will be very en-

Club Eternity is looking for a new lease on life The Potter’s House Church has entered for the Prominent Paint Room Makeover competition.

They would like to give a room which will house a new venue for their “Club Eternity” a fresh coat of paint. Club Eternity is a community centre venue where young people can rap, hip-hop, slam poetry, dramatize, give testimonies, and use video clips to vocalize their “message” of hope and change to the community.

The Potter’s House Church’s main location is Richmond Hill and they are supporting 5 other churches in Motherwell, Algoa Park, New Brighton, Walmer, and Zwide. They work with people in disadvantaged areas and address not only their spiritual needs but physical, financial, and emotional needs through various teachings and workshops.

At the centre, two of the rooms attached to the one where Club Eternity will be housed, will be used to offer their typing school which assists community members with typing skills, cv creation and interview skills to obtain employment.

When concerts are not in session, the space will be used to teach nutrition and health with exercise classes, as well as the various moms and tots classes addressing child nutrition, hygiene, dental care, early reading etc.

“We have sponsored every programme through our church and don’t charge fees or make a profit from them. There is a fee for typing school and soon to be computer classes but it is non-profit,” said Heather Anderson of the Church.

Plenty of paintball action at national event REPORTER PAINTBALL teams from all over the country will converge in Port Elizabeth for the South African Regional Paintball League (SARPL) which will be hosted at Planet Paintball in Pari Park on January 26.

Better known as speedball, organisers promise to entertain with an action-packed event, which runs over one day, for the entire family to watch.

SARPL media spokesperson, Janine Strydom, said on Saturday January 25, they will be hosting a referee clinic presented by one of the world’s best referees from the USA. This will be a first for PE. “There are two types of speedball events hosted in South Africa. They are named three- and five-man as each side has either three or five team members. Each game lasts 3 min in 3-man and 5 min in 5-man. Strydom said paintball markers (guns) shoot at a rate of 12.5 balls per second and not faster that 300 feet per second or 150-200km per hour.

“The games are fast and intense with a lot of communication and strategy on the field. Inflatable bunkers, each one having a specific name, are placed on an enclosed netted field in a mirror format,” said Strydom.

According to international statistics, paintball is one of the safest extreme/adventure sports in the world. The SARPL currently hosts events in five of the main provinces in South Africa with a national event yearly, called the Paintball Super Cup. “This will be the first SARPL 3man event for the 2014 season.”

Planet Paintball owner, Elsje Skillicorn, said braai facilities would be available on the day of the event with packages for families who wish to participate in their own paintball experience also available on the day.

Mazda’s CX5 breaks new territory in fuel efficiency BETTIE GILIOMEE IN 2012 Mazda introduced smart tecnology in the form of the Skyactiv engines, for better fuel economy in their compact SUV, the Mazda CX-5.

Towards the end of last year, they took their campaign for better fuel efficiency even a step further by introducing the Smart Idle Stop System (SISS) on all the CX-5 models.

According to the people at Mazda, the AllNew Mazda CX-5 is designed to give the space and versatility of an SUV, but with excellent fuel economy and the instincts of a sports car to fit in with Mazda’s Zoom-Zoom image.

SISS saves fuel by shutting down the vehicle’s engine automatically when the car is stationary, and restarts it when the driver resumes driving.

This is especially useful for fuel economy in urban areas where the driver frequently stops at traffic lights and intersections.

So does this Smart Idle Stop system work without hampering your normal way of driving? And the answer is a resounding “Yes”.

The switching on and off of the engine happened so smoothly that I only noticed what was happening after stopping at about the third traffic light. And the car idles so softly that the sound of the engine switching off is hardly noticeable.

Being some-one who does not like to give up any semblance of control of a vehicle – and who is not a big fan of things like cruise control and automatic parking or trusting those park assist censors – a car switching itself on and off would not necessarily be on my big wishlist.

But fuel economy is definitely a top priority, and this system was so hassle-free that I was prepared to let the car do its own thing at traffic lights and trust that it would switch itself on, quickly, with no embarassing traffic light incidences.

How does it work Idling stop systems are nothing new. However, unlike the conventional systems which restart the vehicle’s engine with an electric motor using exactly the same process as when the engine is started normally, the Mazda’s SISS restarts the engine through combustion.

Mazda’s system initiates engine restart by injecting fuel directly into the cylinder while the engine is stopped, and igniting it to generate downward piston force.

In addition to saving fuel, the SISS ensures that the engine will restart quickly and the advanced technology ensures the engine restarts in roughly half the time of other conventional electric motor idling stop systems.

Mom of two series leader in Dischem Swim MOTHER of two, Tracy Gous, extended her overall Series lead in the ladies’ Dischem 2km Ocean Swim on Sunday morning at Round 6 of the Ocean Racing Series in Port Elizabeth.

The 37-year-old former surf and still water lifesaving champion, has convincingly won the last three rounds of the Series and has a 20-point lead over 15-year-old Amy Mardon and 25 points on 21-year-old Rebecca Newman.

In the Men’s Dischem 2km swim it’s 18year-old Wayne Jones who has been undefeated this season and leads the Series from his 20-year-old brother Jason and 15-year-old Dylan Smith whilst youngest brother Daniel Jones, also undefeated this season, leads the Dischem 1km swim from Joshua Bellairs and Robert Masterton.

With the top 4 overall swimmers in the Dischem 1km Ocean Swim all 16 years or younger, it’s most impressive to see local swimming legend Mark Edge, 54-years-old, lying in 5th place overall in the Series. In the ladies’ category it’s Kirsten Marriott who leads from Amy Keech and Antonelle Saporta.

On the beach, Juan Slabbert and Maritza Craig lead the men’s and ladies’ Swirlers 5km Beach Walk from Colin Korkie and Johan Ferreira with Taryn Ferreira and Milé Vermaak in the running for the ladies’ overall medals. 16-year-old Keegan Cooke has a 10point lead over Juwayne Fletcher in the Kingfisher FM 5km Beach Run with Munro Ferreira chasing in 3rd place whilst 12-year-old Megan Snyman leads the ladies category ahead of Annie Oakley and Tania Burger.

In the fun and exciting Crickley Dairy Kids 1km Beach Run/Walk for children 12 years and under, the under 6 boys division is being lead by Chad Brown from Jayson Archibald and Ethan Hickman with the girls’ challenge lead by Kayley Pace ahead of Tayla Pretorius and Megan Hough.

Boys 8 yrs and under see Josh Pretorius leading from Tyron Jeacocks and Ethan Pace with Jodi Wilson leading the girls from Paige Dickson and Robyn Hough. Boys 10 yrs and under have Zack Serfontein leading Luke Flood and Daniel Holmes with Jamie Bulbring leading the girls from Tara Sacke and

Rebecca Mardon. Cameron Duffy leads the boys 12 yrs and under division from Ceajay Bosman and Rayhaan Botha with Kayla Ferreira leading the girls from Monique Ferreira and Saskia Wait.

Madibaz kick off Varsity Cup preparations THE FNB Madibaz kicked off their Varsity Cup preparations in fine style with a convincing 68-0 win over Spring Rose Rugby Club at the NMMU Stadium on January 7.

The university team routed the local club side in the first of four pre-season fixtures aimed at getting the squad match-fit for the high-profile national competition.

Over the next three weeks, they will face tough opposition from the SWD Eagles and Free State Cheetahs, as well as Community Cup champions Despatch.

Despite the strong start, outgoing head coach, Brent Janse van Rensburg, said he was cautiously optimistic about his team’s early season form.

“I think for a first time out, we got the result we wanted. We didn’t concede any points but there’s still a lot of work to do.”

Janse van Rensburg said it was positive to note that his team showed signs of improvement as the game wore on.

“So early in the pre-season, all areas can be improved upon. The guys are trying the systems under pressure,” he said.

Janse van Rensburg, said they needed to be more accurate and less reckless with their defensive systems, while focusing on retaining possession on the attack.

“In the line-outs and set pieces we need to work on the accuracy of our ball-winning so we can launch a bit better.”

After reaching the semi-finals in last year’s Varsity Cup, Janse van Rensburg said his team would be aiming high once again.

“It’s a promotion-relegation year but we can’t be thinking of that going into the competition. If we just focus week in and week out, play to our full potential and fight like hell, then I’m confident we won’t finish in the bottom two teams.”

Janse van Rensburg said the warm-up matches provided the ideal opportunity to give all members of his 45-man squad game time on the field and find the right combinations of players.

“Essentially, what we want to do is to put the things we’re working on into practice in a pressure cooker environment and make sure that the combinations are working, so that by the time we play our first game against Maties we’re picking the best group of players to put onto the field.”

At the end of the month, the squad would be whittled down to the final 23 players, he said.

“It’s definitely good conditioning to ensure that we get contact fitness and that we’re ready to come out of our straps in the first week of the competition at Varsity Cup level.”

Janse van Rensburg said the pre-season would also be a transitional phase during

which he would hand over the reins to new coach David Maidza.

Former Border Bulldogs player Maidza steered the EP Kings’ Vodacom Cup and Currie Cup sides through the 2013 season.

“David has been with us since the middle of November; he’s been coming to the sessions, checking what’s been done and giving input where required.

“We’re doing the handover in a way that is best for the team and that’s why I’ve stayed on a bit longer to ensure that the momentum we’ve gained continues.”

Janse van Rensburg said he would be taking a break from coaching to concentrate on his family life.

“I think NMMU rugby is in a far better state than what it was three years ago. The club’s a lot healthier and the player depth is a lot better.

“I have great confidence in the team.

They’re a good group of players and good human beings who work very hard.”

He said home crowd support would play a crucial role in their upcoming campaign.

“It definitely lifts the team. These guys train week in and week out and sweat and put their bodies on the line.

“It’s a good reminder of what they’re playing for – it’s something far greater than themselves or the university – they’re playing for the hopes and aspirations of everybody in their region.”
