Nancy Sihlwayi, onderburgemeester, het gesê hulle is bewus daarvan dat sommige raadslede die taxibedryf glo opsweep. Die sekuriteit rondom Zanoxolo Wayile, burgemeester, en Sihlwayi is die afgelope tyd

aansienlik strenger. “Ons weet wie hulle is. Ons het ’n verslag oor hulle. Hulle verkondig leuens aan die taxibedryf. Die taxibedryf kom sê ons wat julle alles op vergaderings kwytraak,” het Sihlwayi gesê. “Hoe kan raadslede die strategiese doelwitte van die regering ondermyn? Raadslede en amptenare mag nie gemeenskappe opsweep nie.” Volgens haar het gemeenskappe gehoor hoe mense oor ’n luidspreker uitbasuin dat sy en Wayile “uitgeskakel” moet word. Wayile het gesê dit is kommerwekkend dat raadslede kwaadwillig optree. Hy het bygevoeg hy en Sihlwayi weier om gyselaar gehou te word. “Die skuldiges moet vasgetrek word. Dit is weens die forensiese ondersoek (na die openbare vervoerstelsel) dat sommige mense paniekbevange begin word het,” het Wayile gesê. Die sekuriteit by verlede Donderdag se

raadsvergadering was ook strenger. Terwyl die busse Woensdag tot stilstand gekom het weens ’n geskil tussen die taxiverenigings en Transbay, loop die metro die risiko om in die proses finansiering van R600 miljoen vir die vervoerstelsel te verloor. Sihlwayi het ook na die ondersoek na ongerymdhede in die vervoerstelsel verwys. Sy het gesê die verslag van Vusi Pikoli, voormalige hoof van die nasionale vervolgingsgesag, wat die ondersoek in die metro lei, sal binnekort bekend gemaak word. Pikoli se maatskappy is vir drie maande aangestel om die ondersoek te voltooi. “Die ANC het vir die ondersoek gevra. Dit is geen geheim dat ons wil weet waarheen die geld gegaan het nie,” het sy gesê. Die ouditeur-generaal het in sy jaarverslag na die toekennings verwys wat vir die openbare vervoerstelsel geoormerk was, maar vir ander doeleindes aangewend is. Hy het dit as ’n onreëlmatige uitgawe bestempel.

Metro kap Ouditeurgeneraal se jaarverslag HELGA VAN STAADEN DIE ouditeur-generaal (OG) se verdoemende verslag oor die stand van sake in die Nelson Mandelabaai-metropool het verlede Donderdag gemoedere laat opvlam op die eerste jaarvergadering van die jaar. Nancy Sihlwayi, adjunkburgemeester, het onder munisipale amptenare ingeklim en gesê die 2011-’12-jaarverslag was “knip-enplak”-werk van die vorige jaar se verslag. “Jy kan nie kop of stert uitmaak van wat daarin aangaan nie. Dit bevat geen ondersteunende dokumente nie. Die verslag bevat ook nie die munisipaliteit se suksesse nie,” het sy gesê. Die Burger het verlede week berig luidens die OG se verslag het die metro meer as R557 miljoen se onreëlmatige en vrugtelose uitgawes in die 2011-’12-boekjaar aangegaan. Dit sluit in R318,7 miljoen se ongemagtigde uitgawes weens oorbesteding. Sihlwayi het gekla omdat die verslag nie besonderhede bevat oor watter direktorate hulle skuldig gemaak het aan dié uitgawes en die besonderhede daarvan nie. Sy het gesê die OG het punte uitgelig waarop direktorate verduidelikings moes bied en aandui hoe hulle daarop sou verbeter, maar dit is

nie in die jaarverslag vervat nie. Sihlwayi het voorgestel dat die jaarverslag nie onmiddellik aanvaar word nie, maar dat die munisipale openbare rekeningekomitee en ander portefeuljekomitees eers daarna kyk en dat die verduidelikings en regstellings aangebring word voordat dit wéér voorgelê word. Die raad moet die verslag teen einde Maart aanvaar. Kwezi Ntshanyana, Cope-raadslid, het gesê dit is kommerwekkend dat die OG in sy verslag noem dat hy in ’n stadium die ouditproses wou opgee omdat hy nie die samewerking van die amptenare gekry het nie. “Daar moet opgetree word teen amptenare wat nie hul werk wil doen of hul samewerking wil gee nie,” het hy voorgestel. Zanoxolo Wayile, uitvoerende burgemeester, het gesê die jaarverslag moet tot selfondersoek lei. Hy het gesê dit moet baie ernstig opgeneem word en dat gereageer moet word op die foute wat begaan is. Leon de Villiers, DA-koukusleier in die metro, was nie ingenome daarmee dat die verslag nié onmiddellik aanvaar is nie. Hy het gesê die jaarverslag is soos ’n nagmerrie. “Dit raak al hoe slegter. Daar moet gevolge wees vir diegene wat met ongemagtigde en vrugtelose uitgawes oortree,” het De Villiers gesê.

Vagrants also problem in other areas ZELDRÉ SWANEPOEL SINCE the article appeared in last week’s edition about the vagrants in Newton Park, the Port Elizabeth Express has been inundated with complaints about vagrants in other areas too. One such complaint came from an anonymous reader who is concerned about the safety of tourists, especially in the Castle Hill area. She mentioned incidents where tourists have been robbed in broad daylight in the Castle Hill area, which can be attributed to the lack of security in the area, and an overall state of disrepair.

“PE relies on tourism, especially in this area. The MBDA have spent so much money on upgrading the Central area, which now continues with Bird Street. Castle Hill leads directly into Bird Street, so why spend all the money on one section, neglecting the other areas?” she asked. Pierre Voges, Chief Executive Officer of MBDA (Mandela Bay Development Agency), said they are a small organisation with a limited budget. “The MBDA’s budget is a very small fraction of the NMBM’s overall budget. But one must start somewhere. What we do have is a good plan that consists of the incremental implementation of projects (two to three per annum) that will link overall with each other in a collected whole.

How can vagrants be helped? ZELDRÉ SWANEPOEL MONEY should not be given to vagrants. So what should be done to assist them? The Port Elizabeth Express was asked by readers how those wanting to help vagrants, could do so without giving them cash. The Maranatha Streetworkers Trust’s centre takes in homeless adults, where they offer them meals, accommodation, and assistance with personal or other problems. The residents are also asked to perform certain chores while staying at the centre. Dr Trudi Basson, General Manager of the Maranatha Streetworkers Trust, said they used to have a coupon system where people could buy coupons to give to the homeless to trade for a meal. “We used that system when we still had a night shelter, but we don’t have the shelter anymore. We take in homeless adults, males and females - on a fulltime basis to live at the shelter. The residents don’t share rooms. We can, however, take only a few families,” she said. Basson suggested that if members of the public want to help the homeless with a financial contribution, they can contact the Maranatha Streetworkers Trust’s centre at 0 041 586 0017. The centre also has basic needs, such as rice, sugar, cereal, pasta, canned food, potatoes and other vegetables, toilet paper, and clothing, which can also be donated. “We have to also warn the public not to give money to collectors who falsely claim that they are collecting money on behalf of Maranatha. This happens often,” said Basson. “We never send out people to collect funds for the Maranatha Streetworkers Trust. Please do not donate money that way. Rather deposit money into the organisation’s bank account, but first call the management to confirm the banking information, as it has happened before that people have given their personal bank account details to potential donors, and then the organisation never sees that money.”

Patsy Wagner of the Anti-Animal Cruelty League said it is illegal to set a trap in your backyard. Koos Croukamp from the Uitenhage SPCA confirmed that it is illegal to set a trap. It is also illegal for shops to sell those traps. Herselman on Friday told the PE Express he was unaware that it is illegal to set a trap. He also said he would not pay the vet’s account. He admitted that he had set the trap to catch thieves. “In today’s society we have to take precautionary measures to combat crime,” he said. According to a Port Elizabeth lawyer – who spoke to the PE Express on condition of anonymity – Herselman’s liability largely depends on his intention. It could be considered that he had the intention to harm the cat as he could and should have foreseen the possibility that the cat could be injured in the trap. According to the lawyer, the injuries caused by the trap, rather than Herselman directly, are, from a legal standpoint, much the same as Herselman having hit or shot the cat although these are more obviously indicative of a direct intention to harm. Damages can be claimed through the small claims or Magistrate’s Court and also as part of a criminal matter if the Berrington’s pursue such steps.

Great Penguin run ends at St Croix ADVENTURER David Chamberlain yesterday morning reached St Croix Island after traversing 2 700 km of coastline, while pushing a pram, from Walvis Bay. Chamberlain left Walvis Bay on 18 October on the Great Penguin Run for the Birdlife SA foundation to raise funds for the endangered African Penguin, as well as setting the (measured) world endurance record. The African Penguin is one of only two seabirds that breed along our coastline listed as globally endangered by BirdLife International. Current figures show there are only 25 000 breeding pairs left in the world and 21 000 of them live in Nelson Mandela Bay with St Croix Island now the biggest breeding colony in the world. The local SA Marine and Rehabilitation Centre, SAMREC, is a non-profit organization that cares mainly for sick or injured African Penguins because of their vulnerability. They rehabilitate penguins either found by staff on the beach or brought in by the public. SAMREC have adopted the “I Wear Red Socks on Fridays” Campaign to raise funds to care for and continue to rescue, rehabilitate, release and educate the public on the plight of the endangered penguins. Staff feed them vitamins to boost their system, fatten them up and then release them once they are strong enough to fend for themselves and learn how to catch fish. Feeding a penguin costs approximately R25 a day excluding the care. A “Happy Friday Feet” campaign has also been started for runners who support SAMREC by running in red socks. In support of this, Chamberlain put red socks on which he wore from Sedgefield on the last leg of his run. Part of the run will include a bit of science – studying his daily energetic expenditure. Other records, such as the manhauling of sleds to the South Pole by Scott some 100 years ago, probably represent bigger endurance achievements, but were not properly measured, and so cannot be entered into the Guinness Book of Records. The run is being filmed by The Movement, a non-profit organisation. It is planned to fill a 13-part documentary TV show. Local runners are encouraged to take part in the “Happy Friday Feet” campaign. They meet on Fridays at Hobie Beach club house at 5.15am for a 5 to 10km run, walk or cycle. As part of the “Happy Friday Feet” campaign R10 per pair of socks will be donated to SAMREC. Why is there a decline in penguin population?

A large factor to a penguin’s vulnerability and decline in numbers is climate change, over fishing and pollution. And a major cause of the decline in numbers of African penguins is due to the cold currents in which penguins find their food being pushed further out to sea which results in them having to swim almost 60 kilometers away from their burrows and by the time they get back to feed their babies much of the food has been digested so the chicks are not fed properly and therefore take longer to fledge. This has a domino effect as the parents start moulting and then they cannot swim for food for their chicks. This means the chicks are left to fend for themselves. Not knowing how to catch fish leaves them in a weakened state and they can’t cope with the elements and are washed up on our beaches.

Teen einde Desember het Sunridge die kwartaalkompetisie vir die skool wat die meeste herwinbare rommel insamel, gewen. “Dit is te danke aan almal. Die leerders, die ouers, die grootouers én die maatskappye wat ook hul herwinbare rommel aan ons skenk,” verduidelik Slabbert. “Dis almal mense wat uit hul pad gaan om te herwin. Ons trek al verby blote herwinning. Dit gaan nou vir ons oor omgewingsbewaring.” Nog bestanddele van Sunridge se wenresep is die spesiale herwinningsdae wat by die skool gehou word en ’n permanente herwinningsterrein waarheen enigiemand herwinbare rommel kan bring, berig Sarina Engelbrecht. “ ’n Herwinningsprojek moet soos ’n besigheid bestuur word om dit te laat werk,” sê Slabbert. Verder het die skool ook ’n unieke puntestelsel uitgewerk vir die verskillende herwinbare items en dié se gewig om sodoende die Groenspoor-sterre te bepaal. Die skool se Groenspoor-sterre word volgens dié puntestelsel bepaal. Corné Slabbert, ’n gr. 7-leerder wat die meeste punte ingesamel het, is as die algehele wenner aangewys. Sunridge is een van 176 skole en instansies wat deel is van Projek Groenspoor, ’n gesamentlike herwinningsinisiatief van Die Burger, The Waste Trade Company en Goodyear. Upgrade of Kragga Kamma tip delayed TINNEKE GOEDHALS KRAGGA Kamma tip users will have to wait quite a while longer than initially expected for the tip to reopen. The construction, which involves the upgrading of the site, is now expected to only start at the end of May this year. The dilapidated site was closed at the end of June last year after the Metro received a notice from

the department of Economic Development and Enviromental affairs to address the poor management and state of the site. According to the media spokesperson of the metro, Mthubanzi Mniki, the consultant appointed has prepared a number of layout options with costs and submitted these to the directorate for final selection in September 2012. The layout that was selected, as well as specific requirements, were discussed with the consultant in October 2012 and approval

was given to proceed with detail design and preparing of draft tender documents. These documents were received in November 2012. Mniki said the Waste Management department have forwarded the specification report to Supply Chain Management to take them to the specification committee. Once specification is accepted, the tender will be advertised. After advertisement all the supply chain management procedures will follow. He said that the Specifications

Committee that was meant to sit in January to look at the issue has now been rescheduled to February. One of the many tip users who have queried this issue is Pierre Opperman. Masake continues to feed the needy

ZELDRÉ SWANEPOEL THE blessings overflowed at their Christmas function, said the ladies behind the Masake Community Development Forum a feeding scheme in Holland Park. Masake is not only a soup kitchen but also focuses on empowering the community, especially the youth and women. Helen Africa and Melaney Brander appealed in an article in the PE Express last year for donations to organise a Christmas Cheer party for children and adults in the community, and they consequently received assistance from various people. “We received more than enough toys, clothing and food to make gift bags for all the children and the adults. We really were so blessed, and we would like to thank each and every one who donated, and all the volunteers who assisted in making the Christmas party a success,” said Africa. Initially they were going to make gift packs for the children only, but there was more than enough to bring Christmas joy to the adults too. “We also would like to thank everyone and all our sponsors, such as Al Fidaa Foundation and Ward Councillor Chris Roberts, who are still assisting us, especially those sponsors who do so anonymously, and do not want public recognition for the work they do from their

hearts,” said Africa. The feeding scheme, which will be celebrating its first birthday next month, remains open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 1.30pm. They, however, still need urgent funding for electricity, transport, and office equipment, such as a computer, printer, copier and fax. “We really want to get our administrative side going, and therefore need office equipment. The camera which we had to document all our activities, was also lost recently. We appeal to anyone who can assist us to accomplish our goal of reaching out to our community,” said Brander. Africa and Brander wish to have the feeding scheme open three days a week, and will do so when they have sufficient equipment and stock. Africa said that although she enjoys cooking, it is an uphill battle with her stove which has only one plate in working order, and a twoplate stove which is on its last legs. They also struggle to have enough pre-paid electricity to keep the pots cooking the whole day. “We live in a wonderful community, where people have so little, yet they are willing to give to others. Many a time I will go and ask my neighbours to contribute something to cook a pot of food or soup, and they will give - even if it’s only a few potatoes. Helping a child deal with grief

DR CRYSTAL WATSON WITH tragedy occurring throughout the world, children are often exposed to loss of life many times over before they become adults. It is not possible to shield children or protect them from this reality, nor should adults try. Children, in fact, do grieve, and they can be helped with the grieving process.

Normal symptoms of grief in children

These should be temporary and gradually improve: . Regression to bedwetting, thumb sucking . Numbness or “shock” . Whining, crying or clinging to you . Reduced ability to concentrate . Major changes in eating and/or sleeping patterns . Roller coaster ride of emotions with highs and lows . Hyperactivity and “acting out”, temper tantrums or aggression . Poor school grades, bad behaviour in class.

Warning signs that may indicate a need for professional counselling for your child

. Chronic health problems related to the stress . Behavioural problems at home or in school that do not gradually improve

. Suicidal intention or fantasies, other than fleeting thoughts. . Withdrawal, lack of interest in formerly enjoyed activities that don’t improve. . Bad dreams that don’t gradually decrease in frequency or intensity.

Effects of the death of a sibling

Children compete for parental attention and often feel resentful of the attention given to a sick sibling. This can be heightened if a parent has spent time in hospital with the sibling. Guilt may be the predominant emotion that follows triumph at having survived when a sibling dies. Young children may believe that their hostile or ambivalent feelings actually caused their sibling’s death, and this may lead to profound behavioural changes. If the sibling was older, and carried out some parental functions, the reaction may be similar to that after loss of a parent.

Helping bereaved children

Children are rarely prepared for the death of a parent or a sibling, and yet we know from studies of bereaved adults that mourning is aided by a foreknowledge of the imminence and inevitability of death. Children who are forewarned have lower levels of anxiety than those who are not, even within the same family. When death occurs, young children in particular may need the concrete expe-

rience of seeing the parent after death. Similarly, children benefit from attending the funeral but need some protection from the raw expressed grief that may be shown at that time. Attending in the company of someone less affected by the death than the immediate relatives is desirable.

Coping tasks

We know that children, as well as adults, grieve in their own way, that feelings change over time, and that the bereavement process goes on throughout life. There can be an ebb and flow to emotions and situations that trigger new thoughts and ways of thinking about the person who has died and one’s life without the person. Rather than believe in a set series of stages that one must pass through, the work is conceptualized as different tasks with which one must cope or which one must resolve. The tasks of mourning for children have been modelled on the tasks identified for adults as follows: . Adults need to accept the reality of the loss. Children need to understand the person has actually died: Understanding can involve believing the death has occurred, understanding the feelings about it, and accepting the accompanying changes. A child may need to accept that dad doesn’t braid hair as well as mom or that the family needed to get a new nanny because mom had to start work-

ing to earn money after dad died. . Adults need to work through the pain of grief. Children must also cope with the pain of loss and are faced with future occurrences of feelings related to loss: Experiencing rather than avoiding feelings is a necessary step. Experiencing and facing difficult feelings allows one to manage and move beyond them. As children get older, their understanding and feelings about the person who died may change and these feelings must also be addressed. . Adults adjust to the environment in which the person is no longer there. Children are faced with the task of investing in new relationships and developing a new identity based on the loss. Realization and understanding occur over time as a death shapes life in new ways. Children face everyday concrete changes in routine, as well as changes in responsibilities and role. Coming to terms with the differences encourages active control rather than passive avoidance. . Adults must emotionally relocate the person who has died to move on. Children accomplish this task by reevaluating the relationship, keeping an internal sense of the person, and continuing on with normal developmental tasks: Gradually, as days and months pass, the intense emotional focus and feelings become less prominent as balance is restored in life and memories are reinforced.

How to help

Children and teens can be helped with coping tasks in a variety of ways. Whereas the particular issues and specific content discussed must be varied and adapted to the age of the child and the situation, it is helpful for parents

and adults to: . Tell the truth. Hiding information causes children to feel confused, unable to turn to adults for help, and mistrustful of other information. Avoid any unnecessary information. . Be simple and direct. Use correct words and language. Although this may be difficult for adults, saying someone has died is preferable to potentially confusing euphemisms such as “he went to sleep,” “he passed on,” and “we’ve lost him.” . Reassure children they are not to blame. . Model appropriate responses. Do not hide emotions. Explain feelings as a way to help children understand their own, but keep expression of strong, dramatic feelings for private times with other adults. . Find ways for the child to be involved with family if at all possible. Participating in hospital routines or funeral rituals in whatever way they feel most comfortable can demystify events for children and provides closure. . Encourage the child to talk and ask questions. Find out what a child thinks and feels and correct any misconceptions or misinformation. . Become attuned to and respond to the child’s own pace for revealing feelings. Offer opportunities for comfort by being available whenever the child/teen is ready or is experiencing some strong emotion. . Allow and encourage expression (e.g. use of journals, art). . Provide understanding, support, and extra guidance or assistance with school assignments, social obligations, andhomechoresasnecessaryovertime. . Monitor a child’s response over time and check out any concerns with a mental health professional.

Centrestage’s CCR set to rock Music Kitchen THE mother of all rock ’n roll parties and one of Centrestage’s most popular and perennial tribute shows ever, Hey Tonight – A tribute to Creedence Clearwater Revival, returns to the Music Kitchen for two nights on February 1 and 2. The feel-good salute takes in 40 Creedence hits which are all guaranteed to get the audience into a rock ’n roll, sing-along frenzy. Bringing baby home workshop EXPECTANT parents spend months preparing for the arrival of their new baby, and by the time they bring their new addition home, they’ve taken antenatal classes and read a library’s worth of books to prepare them for the birth, but what about after the birth. With all this preparation, the reality of caring for a baby can be overwhelming, and when your household grows from two to three, your relationship with your partner is bound to change. The best way to deal with these changes is to be ready for them. Bringing baby home is a workshop that focuses on helping moms and couples. It is to help equip moms and couples with the knowledge and skills to cope constructively with the changes brought about by the birth of a baby. The workshop is best suited for people in the second or third trimester of pregnancy. Topics that will be covered include getting used to being a mom and dad, breastfeeding, preparing for baby’s arrival and coming home with baby, safety issues at home and in the car and night time parenting. Other topics include coping with a crying baby, learning to step back while dad sees to the baby, motions – postnatal depression and blues and the difference between the expectations and reality of parenting The workshop will be held on February 2 from 9am to 1pm. Eers het sy die Grens Keyhealth-toernooi vir o.16-meisies in Oos-Londen gewen en daarna die Oostelike Provinsie Keyhealth-toernooi vir o.16-meisies in Port Elizabeth.

Headline makers and big chance takers THE Formula 1 season is starting to gain some serious momentum as teams get set to launch their 2013 challengers and the last deals get inked. Pirelli, the official tyre supplier of Formula 1, has unveiled the batch of tyres to be used throughout the 2013 season. At a preview event at its Milan headquarters, Pirelli promised more ‘uncertainty’ this season as they aim to replace the sometimes processional races of last season with a spectacular racing. “Uncertainty means teams having to find the right set-up and drivers having to use the tyre properly. Like last season, in the first five or six races, the drivers were not at the top using the tyres, but at the end they were too good,” said Pirelli chairman Marco Tronchetti. The 2013 compounds will be softer than last year’s with this season hard compound being roughly equated to 2012’s medium tyre. The colours on the sidewalls of the hard compound have also been slightly altered to improve visibility. Instead of the barely noticeable silver colour on the sidewall, the hard compound will now be orange. The Lotus F1 team have opted to retain the services of Romain Grosjean for 2013 and only time will tell if the Frenchman is worth the chance he’s

been given. His first foray into F1 was a forgettable stint with Renault in 2009 that lasted only a handful of races. His re-entry back into the sport didn’t go well either with a string of accidents and a one race ban defining his season. Lotus could have had their pick of some pretty decent drivers which included Kamui Kobayashi and Heikki Kovalainen. Their choice to stick with Grosjean isn’t without justification. At certain points in the season he delivered performances that suggest a fabulous talent; Montreal and Valencia being two of those occasions. Now it’s up to him to smooth out the edges and temper his aggression. Marussia have announced that they will not be keeping hold of Timo Glock for 2013. Instead the German briefly found himself in F1 wilderness before being snapped up by BMW’S DTM squad for the season. Unfortunately, the German’s exit from the Marussia team was financially motivated. The team implied that it is no longer able to pay for Glock’s services and will instead have to look for a driver who can offer a substantial amount of sponsorship money. Marussia are unlikely to find a driver of the same calibre as Glock, which raises the issue that if smaller teams are ‘forced’ to opt for pay drivers how will they be able to excel with-

THE final round of the 2012/13 Secbands EPA Swim Challenge Series takes place on Sunday morning at Marina Martinique and plays host to the EP Championship 5km and 7.5km open water swimming events. Jono Roux and Lisa-Marie Goosen are the defending 5km EP Champions. Roux will, however, not be defending his title this year. East London’s Edward Johannisen has the fastest 5km qualifying time this season at 1hr 7min 30sec whilst Megan van Wyk’s 1hr 8min 50sec heads the local ladies qualification table. The 7.5km event was a new addition this season and hasn’t been very well supported which means only two swimmers, Rebecca Newman and Shaun Reznik, qualify to contest the EP Championships this weekend. Ray of hope for EP Kings PRESENTLY it’s just a whisper. No one is saying too much. It’s all off-record stuff – but there is, those in the know believe, a strong possibility for a win-win outcome of the yo-yo promotion-relegation threat to newly-promoted Southern Kings and the demoted Lions by the end of the 2013 season. A new broadcasting deal is due to be negotiated in 2016 and it’s expected then that South Africa and New Zealand would expand their participation in the Super Rugby competition to six teams apiece. Australia would be happy to remain with five, giving the tournament a 17-team base. This, with likely agreement from the tournament’s rights holders (sponsors) and SANZAR, the governing body of the competition, would open the door for three more teams to make a total of 20, playing in two conferences. It’s believed the remaining three vacancies would be filled by Argentina, Japan and a combined US-Canada team. This, of course, would suit the South African situation perfectly. The Kings, understandably, are anxious to extend their membership of the elite competition beyond a single season. (The present agreement calls for the worst performing SA team in the competition – almost certain to be the Kings – to play off against the Lions.) In a friendly against the Cheetahs at Ellis Park last Saturday, the Lions, in a breathtaking high-revs performance, demonstrated what can be expected from them with a spectacular 33-17 victory. SA Rugby CEO, Jurie Roux, was reluctant to put anything on record beyond allowing: “A sub-committee has been formed to look at Vodacom Super Rugby expansion and the opportunities that may exist.” Here he was referring to a weekend statement by Greg Peters, the CEO of SANZAR, who was quoted in the Australian press as saying: “Super Rugby in its present form is

a pretty successful model – and we’re not going to water it down. But we’d be derelict in our duty if we didn’t consider expanding it into new areas. The US is a very big market, as are Japan and Asia generally. Ultimately it all comes down to what is in the best interests of the three SANZAR partners.” Read into that what you will. But it does seem to indicate more than just a hint that a 20-team tournament could be just around the corner. Good news for the Kings if that’s the case. MISBAH ul-Haq’s Pakistan cricket team is already with us, and kicks off with a three-match test series at Joburg’s Wanderers on Friday. Graeme Smith certainly won’t make the mistake of underestimating them. Bertel was coached privately by the late Japanese Shotokan Master, TetsuhikoAsai Sensei (10th dan), for 20 years. As a result, he is internationally recognised as one of the world’s leading practitioners of Asai-Ha Shotokan-Ryu. A two-day class and seminar will be held on Saturday, February 2, and Sunday, February 3. It will consist of four two-hour sessions. Seminar times will run from 10am till 12am, and from 2pm till 4pm on both Saturday and Sunday.
