T’S down to the wire for South Africa’s premier showjumpers and their mighty mounts as they head to Nelson Mandela Bay for the Nissan World Cup Qualifier from November 13 to 16.
The Nissan World Cup Qualifier is the final leg of the World Cup Qualifier series for 2014. The top-class arenas and spectator facilities of the Port Elizabeth Riding Club will play host to a four-day equestrian feast of events on an international-standard course, culminating in the Nissan World Cup Qualifier on Sunday, November 16.
The cream of SA’s showjumping talent will be vying for the title of winner of the eight-leg series and an invitation to compete in the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI) World Cup in Las Vegas, USA, in 2015. Top names in SA showjumping will compete in categories ranging from 1.0m to the 1.50m Nissan World Cup Qualifier, on a testing course designed by Kevin Spratley, an FEI Level III international course designer and one of South Africa’s most highly qualified in his field. The Nissan World Cup Qualifier event on the Sunday will make for thrilling riding – and viewing – as it must have a water jump, at least two 1.60m jumps, and the rest at 1.50m,

Saturday’s Nissan 6 Bar challenge is a nailbiting winner-takes-all contest with R15 000 in prize money at stake, as riders take on a series of six jumps that increase in height every round, with the record standing at horse and rider clearing a 2.0m jump. Nissan SA Managing Director Mike Whitfield said, “We are looking forward to a weekend of showcasing real horsepower in the great outdoors of Port Elizabeth. Nissan has been involved in the equestrian arena and activities for a number of years. We have focused strongly on developing Team Nissan and to see how we can support the develop-

ment of new talent, especially emerging, previously disadvantaged riders, so we can ensure that we can contribute towards their participation in the sport which we believe is very important.” Event organiser Tanja Radke said, “The fact that this year we host the final leg of the World Cup Qualifier makes it even more of a must-see event. The Nissan World Cup Qualifier is a premier event on the equestrian calendar and a highlight for us as the PE Riding Club is a superb venue – a piece of countryside close to the city – run by people with a heart for developing their sport in the Eastern Cape.
