Huge festival boost for Central MICHAEL ZOETMULDER

ORT ELIZABETH’S Central district is set to come alive this weekend for the second annual Nelson Mandela Bay Herald Urban run which will see the area and its historical buildings transformed into one big obstacle course and festival ground.

Mandela Bay have been hard at work to ensure that they construct the most challenging obstacles.

There will be 16 obstacles along the course which starts and finishes on the Donkin Reserve beneath the giant flag. Participants are all required to raise funds for the Urban Run charities with four different levels of incentives being offered, depending on the

donations raised.

A weekend of family fun and excitement is planned with an expo and entertainment on the Donkin Reserve between 9am and 5pm on Saturday.

African Drumbeat provides a celebration of rhythm and music throughout the day with fun for the kids as they build musical instruments from junk.

A ‘junk 4 funk’ workshop is being held in the Rotary Club of PE Sunrise Kids’ Zone between 10am and 11am whereafter kids can build their own junk 4 funk instruments between 1.30pm and 2.30pm.

Kids also get to enjoy a fun interactive drumming and Zulu dancing lesson between 3pm and 4pm. Exciting exhibitors, food and craft vendors and

numerous sporting activities for the kids will fill the day.

The Urban Festival will run from 9am to 5pm on Saturday 15th and 7am to 2pm on Sunday 16th with the Urban Run starting at 9am on the Sunday with a prize-giving being held at 12.00pm.

THE NAKED EGGSPERIMENT

The Urban Run is hosted by the Mandela Bay Development Agency to draw people back to the CBD and have great fun whilst raising funds for local charities with a target of over R100 000.

Apart from the over 1 000 participants who will be taking to the streets tackling the obstacles, the Donkin Reserve will also be turned into a festival ground with activities for young and old.

“Our aim is not only to bring people to the completed MBDA projects, but also to expose the CBD to people that have not been in the CBD for a number of years due to the perception of crime and grime,” said Pierre Voges CEO of the MBDA. “For the MBDA it is about making the completed MBDA projects come alive. Urban renewal is not only about design, infrastructure implementation, but also about security, cleanliness and the resulting growth in pride, real estate confidence, art, sport, heritage and culture, amongst others.”

According to Voges, one of their aims is to bring life back to the city, in terms of people living, working and enjoying the city surroundings, and the Urban Run is an effort in this respect.

“2011 saw the first event with over 300 entries and very good exposure on Supersport. This year we will have just over 1 000 athletes and a much bigger event, in terms of activities and exposure. I have no doubt it will grow into a serious event, not only on the local sporting and events calendar, but also on the national calendar,” said Voges.

A RECENT survey done in the metro over a 10 day period, counted 7 644 people talking on their cellphones while driving a car.

The survey which was done all over PE at various locations, was done for a company which is launching a new handsfree kit for cars.

The research company, Listen To Survey, placed 20 people at different locations, such as robots, shopping centres, the beachfront, city centre, government buildings, schools and freeways. According to Richard Holton of Listen To Survery, the number of vehicles spotted with the driver talking on a cellphone, was recorded for the survey.

Cape Town Municipality recently implemented a by-law impounding the phones of people who were spotted talking on their cellphones while driving.

Chief Whip and member of the standing committee for safety and security, is of the opinion that the by-law regarding the impoundment of cellphones is a good one. “The illegal usage of cellphones whilst driving a vehicle is of great concern,” said Rautenbach.

At a meeting of the Safety and Security standing committee which took place on July 13, Rautenbach requested that the possibility of introducing the by-law in the Metro should be investigated as a matter of urgency. He said that he would at the next meeting of the standing committee for Safety and Security introduce a motion wherein he would also recommend that the fine for using a cellphone illegally whilst driving a vehicle be increased from the current fine of R750 to R1500.

“If we can succeed in introducing both these measures, I believe it will assist in addressing this ever-growing problem. It will then be up to our traffic officers to ensure that this by-law be strictly enforced,” said Rautenbach.

Speaking to the religious fraternity at the City Hall in Port Elizabeth on Thursday as part of the metro’s consultative strategy meetings to various sectors, Ntshebe said the metro was ready to start the safe, quick, affordable and efficient system.

“All the role-players in the transport sector have been consulted and have agreed to be part of the process that is meant to benefit and empower residents of the metro,” said Ntshebe.

The system which uses median lanes and enclosed median route stations on trunk corridors is aimed at taking the metro forward. According to Ntshebe, it is aimed at reducing transport congestion by making more people use a cost-

effective public transport system. This, he added, will combat environmental impact and reduce global warning – something good for future generations.

According to Ntshebe, this is the system originally known as BRT which was tried and tested in countries like Brazil and Colombia. He said South Africa modified the system however, with the inclusion of the taxi industry which plays a pivotal role in the transport sector.

“Government has assured everyone that there will be no loss of jobs and income as a result of the system,” said Ntshebe.

Religious leaders asked many questions like whether the fares might be exorbitant for the unemployed and poor; and whether there would be discounts for the elderly, children and the disabled. Ntshebe said all will be catered for fairly in the new system.

When asked by PE Express whether the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro will consider impounding cell phones, Hamilton Totoyi, director of Traffic and Licensing in PE, said they have no additional by-laws allowing for the impounding of cellular phones.

“The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has not taken any decision at this stage to go that route; therefore it will be premature for me to talk about the implementation of any such action,” said Totoyi.

“A by-law is always derived from an Act and at the moment the National Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996 clearly states that ‘no driver of a motor vehicle is allowed to use a cellular phone while driving on a public road’. The Act does not refer to the impounding of the cellular phones of offending motorists, it only states that a fine, determined by the Chief Magistrate, must be issued.

“At this moment we are only implementing this Act,” said Totoyi.

Hotel sustainability in PE does not concern TINNEKE GOEDHALS NELSON Mandela Bay’s CEO of Tourism is not concerned about the sustainability of hotels in the Metro in the wake of the recent announcement that the hotel group to which Radisson Blu Hotel belongs, Auspex Hotels and Leisure, face possible liquidation.

“The current matter has nothing to do with the sustainability or the future of hotels in Nelson Mandela Bay. The matter is one that involves developers and/or shareholders and not the hotel as an operation.”

This was the response from Mandlakazi Skefile, CEO of Nelson Mandela

Bay Tourism, after the PE Express enquired about the general future of hotels in PE, especially since a number of hotels were built in preparation for the 2010 Soccer World Cup. According to recent research done

by Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism, hotel occupancy in the Bay is up on 2011 and in some months also up on 2010.

The first half of 2012 (January to June) had an average occupancy of 47,24% versus 40,02% in 2011. Furthermore, according to South Africa Tourism (SAT) statistics, there was also an 11,7% increase of international visitors to South Africa between January and April 2012, compared with the same period in 2011.

When asked if there is really such a great demand for hotels in PE, Ske-

file said that the developers and investors carry out detailed market research before investing in hotel developments.

“If there was no demand, then these investors and shareholders would not develop,” said Skefile.

With regard to Radisson Blu, she said that according to initial information supplied in a media release, the hotel’s occupancy and/or its operation as a hotel serving visitors to the city, has nothing to do with the application for liquidation.

“This should be considered above all. The release states that the ‘hotel operation is profitable and will thus remain open under the Radisson Blu Brand and Management’,” said Skefile.

Dispute resolution sought over neighbourhood watch debacle PE EXPRESS REPORTER A DISPUTE resolution process has been initiated between the Community Police Forum (CPF), and two Richmond Hill neighbourhood watch bodies, the original Richmond Hill Sector Crime Forum (RHSCF) and the new Richmond Hill Residents’ Association (RHRA).

The RHSCF and the RHRA are still operating under their own committees, but are working together to resolve this dispute.

According to Robert Brewers, chairperson of the RHSCF, the dispute concerns the validity of the RHSCF constitution and the transfer of funds to the Residents’ Association to buy a vehicle which was registered in the name of the suspended RHSCF chairman, Alan Mounter.

It is alleged that after he was suspended from the forum Mounter, with the support of the community, withdrew funds from the forum’s bank account to purchase the vehicle and register it in his name.

Brewers stressed, however, their support for Mounter in “his quest for justice.

“The difference in crime levels since this debacle began at the beginning of June is noticeable, and we have been instructed by CPF and SAPS that we may not use our vehicle until it is resolved. The vehicle is in safe keeping for now,” said Brewers.

He said the committees are working hard behind the scenes to resolve the dispute with the SAPS/CPF, so that they can continue to work with the successful structures built over the past few years.

“The community must be assured that everything possible is being done to protect the interests and to ensure that the vehicle and funds are not absorbed by the CPF; also to get the neighbourhood back on track as the happy, vibey, united and safe place it had become,” Brewer said.

Volunteers support victims at Mount Road Police station TINNEKE GOEDHALS THE Mount Road Police station recently opened a Victim Support Centre to assist victims in a more people-friendly environment, preventing possible secondary victimisation.

The volunteers working at the centre are all from the Mount Road precinct and are trained as care givers, administrating and manning the centre on a 24-hour basis.

It is a National Police instruction that all Police stations must have a Victim Support Centre or a Victim friendly facility and what happens in this centre has to be reported back on a monthly basis at a CPF meeting.

According to Dorothea Beets, the chairperson of the centre who was unanimously elected on the last evening of their training, they work on a donor basis and there are only volunteers working at the centre.

The SAPS supplied the building and the community dealt with sponsorships to furnish and get supplies for the centre. “I got the name of an organisation called “Skinderbekkies” on Facebook and after explaining what the centre was

about, we were inundated with sponsors from the community that donated from diapers to blankets and clothing, ” said Beets.

Their training was done in the evenings and on two Saturdays.The 12 caregivers were trained in communication skills; restorative justice; domestic violence, rape and child abuse; support at a crime scene; understanding the victim and court and police procedure.

As care givers it is their responsibility to calm and support the victims while they are at the centre and explain to them the process to follow. If they need further support like going to the hospital they will assist them. They also do referrals to professional people and organisations.

Police spokesperson, Warrant officer Sandra Janse van Rensburg, said they definitely had a need for such a centre. “The fact that the volunteers sacrifice their free time to help out, and sacrificing their time to go through the training, is absolutely incredible. They really want to make a difference,” said Van Rensburg.

Once a promising cricketer who played on a professional level, Reeze Telling from Gelvandale succumbed to a life of drugs.

After picking up an injury at the age of 21, which subsequently forced him to quit playing cricket, he became depressed and became involved in drugs and gangsterism, and his life spiralled out of control to the point where he had landed in hospital.

“I was down on the ground, and I disappointed my family and my parents. But the thing that finally got me to change my ways was when my very good friend, Clyde Williams, was murdered.

His death really pulled me from the edge, and this is where I asked God to save me, and He did,” said the young man who is now also involved in youth ministry.

He also attributes his road to recovery to the support of his mom, Wilma Kleinbooi, his uncle, Envor Telling, his granny, Freda Telling, and Rev Johnny Thomas, who went out of their way to assist him with getting on the right track again

“I am not ashamed of what I was.

My past helps me to understand and help others who are in the same position.”

He is providing free and private counselling services at the Stepping Stones Centre in Extension 21, as well as St Thomas High School where he is based three days a week to provide drug education. He also goes to other schools when requested to do so.

“I have a group of learners from St Thomas who assist me when doing drug education at schools, and they perform a short play to help spread the message. The positive feedback I get from schools, learners and parents is amazing.”

Telling is at Stepping Stones every Wednesday for group sessions from 2pm to 4pm, and for one-on-one counselling on Thursdays from 9am to 4pm, and Fridays from 9am to 1pm. Parents of children that are addicted to substance abuse are also encouraged to attend these sessions.

Pack-A-Bag for Hospice from clothing, books, magazines, tools, toys, games and kitchenware to bric-a-brac, into the bag as a non-cash donation.

The project was started in 2011 and due to the success of last year, they decided to make it one of their annual fund raising drives. This one in particular will be used to stock St Francis Hospice’s two Charity Shops, one in 4th Avenue (Newton Park) and the other in Rink Street (Central). The funds generated from selling these items in the shops will be used for much needed financial resources for the palliative care of the patients.

“Through this project we create awareness, that there are many less fortunate than ourselves and that we can make a difference in someone’s life. This project can teach the basics of philanthropy and compassion, and create a deep feeling of pride, because no matter what you give you make a difference,” said Nicky von Hoffmann, Retail Resources Manager of The Hospice Shoppe.

St Francis Hospice is one of the longest serving non-profit organisations in the metro.

Registered with HPCA, it delivers much needed palliative care and comfort to people less fortunate who suffer from life-debilitating illnesses such as cancer, HIV and motor neuron disease.

The organisation takes care of over 600 patients.

She delivers the bags herself. ) PE Express and Die Burger are also supporting this project. Hoffmann delivered bags to the office which were distributed among the staff.

THE Woolhope Secondary School was in the news recently when one of the school’s classrooms was destroyed by arson.

The classroom had extensive damage to the chalkboards, cupboards, floors and the Grade 8-10 learners’ Afrikaans and Life Orientation text books.

After an article appeared in the Port Elizabeth Express, appealing for dona-

tions to fix the classroom, help came to the school in all shapes and forms.

“We received paint and also a donation of glass for new windows,” said Tasneem Ayoob, Bursar of Woolhope Secondary School.

If the classroom had not been repaired the learners would have had to continue being accommodated in the school’s library.

“On behalf of the SGB, principal, staff and learners of Woolhope Secondary School, we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to those companies, indi-

viduals and organisations that came forward to generously donate or sponsor items towards the repairs to the classroom that were damaged through arson. Music therapy workshop held This workshop will take place at Summerwood Primary School Hall on Saturday, September 15, from 9am to 12am.

Burger is a professional instructor at the Policlinic in Jeffreys Bay, where she rehabilitates patients by means of music and water therapy. She hails from Pretoria, where she was a music teacher and lecturer for 43 years.

Her interest in music therapy was sparked while attending a Unisa workshop by Dr Gradziola Sandbank from the Haïfa University in Israel in 1990. She was intrigued by music’s inherent po-

tential to solve many psychological, mental and physical problems in children.

However, in 1990 no South African University offered a course in Music Therapy. A course of this nature was only to be launched at the Department of Music of the Pretoria University in 1999. Consequently, Burger furthered her research abroad at various institutions all over the world. In the process her interest in music therapy extended beyond its value for children to a consideration of its benefits for adolescents, adults and the elderly.

Theodor Herzl Schools’ butterflies join breath-taking global exhibition HUNDREDS of butterflies decorated by Theodor Herzl pre-primary, primary and high school pupils will soon flit their way to Houston, USA, to form part of a poignant commemorative exhibition dubbed the Butterfly Project.

The eventual kaleidoscope of more than 1.5 million hand-crafted butterflies will become an inno-

vative and breath-taking tribute to the same number of children who died tragically in the Holocaust.

Children of mixed denominations around the world have been invited to contribute their two-dimensional creations to the Butterfly Project, which has been organised by the Holocaust Museum Houston.

SINCE setting up her practice in Cape Road over five years ago, Leandie Buys has become recognised as one of the Bay’s top relationship experts.

The public’s initial reaction to the relationship expert and clinical sexologist was one of caution, but her regular show on local radio and public talks have helped her build a strong following. I asked my landscaper to put together something that would help calm any anxious couples that come to see me. The result is amazing. The garden is also very symbolic

when it comes to relationships.

Vote for young PE dancers in national talent competition

NCEBA DLADLA IDENTICAL twins from New Brighton in Port Elizabeth stand a chance of winning a National Talent Search Competition and a whopping R25 000 on offer.

Members of the Red Location Culture Group, Liya and Lihle Vena (14), the incredible twins from Dora Street in New Brighton, won this year’s annual Mzansi Magic Market Day Regional Talent Show which was held at the Boardwalk Entertainment World and Casino recently.

This entrepreneurship programme of M-Net awards budding actors, singers and dancers.

The twins performed a Michael Jackson dance and wowed the crowds to beat 250 other

contestants.

But the Grade 9 Cowan High School pupils depend on the public votes to stand a chance of winning the national competition.

“We are very proud of what Lihle and Liya have achieved. I know they love Michael Jackson. We wish them well,” said their class teacher, Luleka Sobetwa.

“These kids have pure talent! They are hard workers who practise every day to sharpen their skills,” said Tony Pearce, a UK teacher and researcher who mentors the duo as members of the Red Location Cultural Group.

The winners are selected via votes on the Mzansi Magic Market Day website and facebook page. The voting started on 10 September and will continue until Friday, 21 September.

David Livingstone celebrates 45 years with reunion THE David Livingstone High School is celebrating 45 years this year, and a group of former students is planning to celebrate this with a reunion event.

“We realised that it is time to return the hope and favour to our school and we’ve had a number of activities to raise funds,” said Nadia Domingo, former student.

The winners and runners-up in each age category will be announced at this gala event. All entries received will be on display in the Centre for the duration of the competition. Youth Choirs hold Prestige Concert MUSIC lovers will be treated to the full spectrum of young voices when the Prestige Concert 2012 is presented by The Eastern Cape Junior Children’s Choir (ECjCC) in collaboration with the Eastern Cape Youth Choir (ECYC) in the Dutch Reformed Church, Summerstrand, on September 14.

This concert is the annual showcase of the exquisite voices and sound of the Eastern Cape regional choirs.

Principals and choir teachers of the schools represented in these choirs, sponsors, VIP’s, previous members and friends of the choirs are traditionally invited to this prestige event.

A new feature this year is the visiting South Cape Children’s Choir (SCCC), a regional children’s choir from the Garden Route, under the leadership of Jan-Erik Swart, who will share the stage with the ECjCC and the ECYC. The SCCC regularly undertake overseas concert tours. In 2011 they performed in Germany, Switzerland and Belgium and currently they are planning their concert tour of the United States of America during 2013.

The SCCC recently attained Gold at the

ATKV Animato Regional Competition. They will take part in the final round at the Hugo Lamprechts Theatre in Cape Town at the end of September 2012.

The ECjCC, under the leadership of Hanlie Young, represents the youngest group of choristers taking part, aged 6 – 10 years. The SCCC choristers will represent the 9 – 13 years age group, while members of the ECYC will cover ages 13 to 18 years.

A variety of music will be presented, ranging from classical music to traditional CapeMalay and Xhosa folk songs.

The audience will be delighted to hear popular local soprano, Liske Potgieter, performing as soloist.

The concert will culminate in the mass choir with all choristers from all three participating choirs taking part.

Tickets will available at the door and cost R50 for adults and R20 for pensioners, students and children. The show will start at 7pm.

The WWTW will treat a combination of industrial effluent and domestic sewage to provide sufficient treatment capacity to cater for present and future development requirements. The effluent will be used optimally to provide water to supplement the Return Effluent (RE) scheme which provides industrial/process water for the Coega IDZ. The WWTW will be designed to treat approximately 120 ml/day, consisting of 3 identical trains of 40ml/day.

destroyed the Investec Night Relay course record with a winning time of 1hr 06min 16sec in the final round of this year’s event.

Merrell’s ladies sealed their 2012 unbeaten status in the women’s category, with a time of 1hr 31min 40sec, whilst Transnet Runners’ team 1 were the fastest mixed team over the 21km course in 1hr 18min 07sec. The walking category was won by the Walking Divas from the Rhino Group who covered the 12.6km distance in a time of 1hr 24min 48sec.

This is the first year Investec have sponsored the event as naming sponsor. It is a joint sponsorship, hosted by the Mandela Bay Development Agency and Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism, and supported by MTN, City Lodge Hotel group, Scheckter’s Organic Beverage and News Cafe.

The event was organised by Zports and has been recognised as a key teambuilding event in the local business community. To date, entries have grown from an initial 110 teams to 190 teams from the Nelson Mandela Bay community.

Pistorius deserves his ‘Oscar’

ARMS outstretched and looking every inch a winner in his own right, Oscar Pistorius had the last word (perhaps a quiet last laugh, too) at the London Paralympics last Saturday as he crossed the line of the 400m final well ahead of the rest of the field.

He had thundered through the distance – a full circle of the track – in 46.68 sec – 3.46 sec faster than the next best finisher. Gone was the “blues of the blades” dispute in the 200m, when he was beaten by the blazing finish of Brazil’s Alan Oliveira in perhaps the biggest upset of the Games.

He would soon apologise for his outburst, for Pistorius is a sportsman to the very tips of those blades – even if it was the alleged illegal length of Oliveira’s blades that occasioned his injudicious show of disappointment. Winning the 400m was what he had to do to prove that he is, after all, human. Like you or your next-door neighbour; that, like anyone else, he has emotions and isn’t immune to disappointment.

Above all else, the most disturbing aspect of this overblown brouhaha was the labelling of Pistorius as a “bad sport”, one who couldn’t take a beating. To be blunt, a whiner.

Of course the South African star was hoping to win the 200 just as he later won the 400, and was shaken when he was pipped at the post. Then his disappointment spilled over. At some time or another, it happens to us all.

Let us, his fellow-countrymen, be totally supportive. Let us lift up our arms and shout it out loud: “And the Oscar, for courage and indomitable determination, goes to... Oscar Pistorius.”

It’s something, too, just a drop of it – that courage and determination – we could do with in the ranks of our Springbok team ahead of their next Four Nations rugby championship match against the All Blacks in Dunedin on Saturday.

Predictably, after last Saturday’s unconvincing display in their 26-19 defeat by the Wallabies in Perth, the rumblings of discontent against new coach Heyneke Meyer’s tactics and selections have grown considerably in volume. To sack the coach at this stage, after just six matches in charge, would be ludicrous. Give the bloke a chance!

It won’t happen, not this early in Meyer’s tenure of SA sport’s hottest of hot seats – and specially not against New Zealand at this stage of the competition – but a sensible overhauling of the Springbok engine could yield profitable fruit.

Remember in the mid-1960s when the Keith Oxlee era was nearing its end? The Springboks were badly in need of new impetus at flyhalf, and joining the Boks in New Zealand, Doc Craven himself agreed to a radical change in tactics with the selection of 20-year-old Jannie Barnard in this most pivotal of rugby positions. Why not give Free State’s Johan Goosen a try? While Meyer is at it, why not go for broke with the Shark’s Pat Lambie at fullback?

Both are youngsters of exciting talent. They’re “rugby mature” and wouldn’t let South Africa down. It’s unlikely to happen. Both are more likely to retain their places on the bench. If so, Heyneke, why not promote them from the 10-minute movie extras slot, to a more meaningful role on rugby’s great stage. (If – surprise, surprise – they’re already in the team, well done!)

The Freda Jabkowitz Educare in Schauderville is at 63 the oldest creche in the Northern suburbs. Ac­ cording to principal René Naidoo the educare is sit­ uated in a disadvantaged community stricken with gang­violence. Therefore the children are taught karate, self­defence, and motoring skills by the Es­ sen School of Karate once a week to boost their confidence. At the back are Sydney Elliot, Leki­ yden Ram, Sensei Hezaron Essen (Essen School of Karate) and Lucian de Jager. Peerless Hamilton shines at Monza TRADITIONS, passion, flair, speed – these are some of the characteristics synonymous with two of the greatest things on the planet, Formula 1 racing and the Autodromo di Monza.

At the head of the race it was all under control in the capable hands of pole-sitter Lewis Hamilton. For all the rumours swirling around Hamilton’s future he did well to focus on the most important thing – racing. A hat-trick of victories for McLaren has solidified the progress made by the team over the last few race weekends. Add that to an in-form Lewis Hamilton and a good day at the office is almost a certainty. The Brit perfectly delivered 53 flawless laps never under any pressure from behind. It was a relatively lonely afternoon for the former champ without any major fights except for having to fend of Felipe Massa at the start of the race.

“You never know what is going to happen when you come into a race weekend. But I have been so happy that it has just run quite smoothly throughout the weekend and the guys have done a great job with the package,” said Hamilton.

His teammate didn’t have the same troublefree run. Jenson Button seemed to be heading for a one-two finish when a fuel pick-up problem brought a premature end to his race.

But no one suffered as dreadful a day as Red Bull Racing. Surprisingly neither car was able to cross the finish line for the first time since the Korean GP in 2010.

Sebastian Vettel retired with an alternator problem, as in Valencia, while Mark Webber ended up with severely flat-spotted tyres after a spin on the exit of the Ascari Chicane. Where has it gone wrong for the once invincible team?

The ban on rear blown diffuser is the real culprit. It has severely crippled Red Bull and may have led to Adrian Newey feeling that he had to push the limit of design to the absolute edge.

During his final years at McLaren his cars were blindingly fast but unreliable; a similar pattern is starting to emerge at Red Bull. Nevertheless, write them off at your peril.

It just wouldn’t be Formula 1 if there wasn’t a little bit of controversy at some point. The fight between Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso

bounced back in emphatic style. Going like a ballistic missile, the Mexican charged through the field from twelfth to pass both Ferraris for a brilliant second place finish. The Sauber team deserve a lot of the credit as well for delivering a

As Alonso pulled to the left to overtake, Sebastian Vettel defended his position and incurred a drive-through penalty for his actions. Since then, however, the FIA has clarified article 16.1 of regulations to read that “a driver defending his position on a straight and before any braking area, may use the full width of the track during his first move provided no significant portion of the car attempting to pass is alongside his.” The penalty is tough to dispute on the grounds that Vettel pushed Alonso off the track.

It could, however, be argued that Vettel was defending his position ‘on a straight’ in accordance with the rule clarification. Despite the clarification of defensive driving, there still remains a grey area. Several times in the past the leading driver has been allowed to force the pursuing driver off the track regardless of how far alongside each other they may have been and they have been able to do so without incurring any penalties.

Comebacks to competitive Grand Prix racing hardly ever work out but they probably didn’t account for Kimi Raikkonen. A fifth place in the Italian GP moved the Finn into third position overall in the drivers’ championship standings.

One point is all that separates the 2007 champion from McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton, who has won three races so far in 2012. In contrast, Raikkonen hasn’t stood on the top step of the podium at all this season.

Instead, his incredible consistency and clean racing have kept him in the championship hunt.

Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg brought their Mercedes home in sixth and seventh respectively as di Resta, Kobayashi and Senna rounded out the top-ten.

One week ago it was heartbreak as both Saubers fell victim to the first lap crash in Belgium.

Fast forward seven days and Sergio Perez has

brilliant strategy and building car that is extremely kind to its tyres.

Seven races remain in the 2012 season and if the Italian GP is anything to go by it’s going to be a breath-taking ride.

VWSA-NMMU solar car ready to race THE Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) last week unveiled their solar car which they will be racing in the third South African Solar Challenge on September 18 to 29.

The solar car, which has been named ‘Photon’, was unveiled by Tom du Plessis, Director for Production at Volkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA). With the move towards ‘Think Blue’, Volkswagen Group South Africa is leading the charge by supporting the NMMU team.

‘Photon’ will be competing against a number of international teams from countries such as Japan and Netherlands.

In May 2011, Volkswagen made a substantial financial and technical contribution towards the establishment of the project, which has culminated in the VWSA-NMMU Solar Car team participating in this bi-annual event.

Volkswagen has also provided the team with three vehicles – Crafter, T5 Kombi and Caddy – which will be used as support vehicles during the two-week race that will cover over 5 000km.

Clive Hands, project leader of the VWSANMMU Solar Car team, said: “Our team consists of both local and international students from

aerodynamic to ensure that drag is reduced to a minimum,” added Hands.

“All sub-systems have been designed and manufactured to reduce energy consumption as much as possible. The car will travel the width and breadth of South Africa with its 6m2 solar deck, producing power not more than it takes to run a hair-dryer,” concluded Hands.
