Student minister murdered
NCEBA DLADLA
T
HE murder of student Minister Vuyo Gongo (23) of the United Congregational Church (UCC) eRhabe in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage has left the entire Nelson Mandela Bay church fraternity in shock. Gongo’s lifeless body was found with multiple stab-wounds in Jongilanga Street,
KwaNobuhle on the morning of April 1. SAPS Uitenhage spokesperson Warrant Officer Gerda Swart confirmed this and said a member of the community informed police of this gruesome find. After investigations into the identity of the body, police informed the grieving family. A murder docket has been opened. “Nobody knows what happened as all his belongings were found next to his lifeless body,”
said Andiswa Gongo (31) about the death of her sibling, the fifth of Nofezekile Gongo’s six children. “My mother has not been all right since this ordeal. We are all destroyed. Why?” asked a sobbing Andiswa. “Vuyo (Gongo) was a gifted student minister and preacher who lived for Christ. He was young and so talented that we elected him to be the Young Men’s Guild (YMG) Chaplain,” said multi-congregational YMG President
Thembinkosi Xaluva. Xaluva is a lay minister at St Thomas African Catholic Church. Gongo he said, was a well-known and respected Preacher (Umshumayeli) from KwaNobuhle and visited hospitals and jails to counsel and give love and hope to the sick, the dying and the incarcerated as the Pastoral Care Chaplain.

Readers are leaders: Children encouraged to read for better future The Nelson Mandela Bay Main Library hosted a number of children from various schools in Ward 5 and surrounding areas for a beadwork and story reading session last Wednesday. The annual event, a Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality programme, is aimed at encouraging future leaders to engage the libraries during their school holidays. Library Services acting Assistant Director Buyiswa MsiziSarame said each municipal library has a Children’s Library Assistant that assists in organising children for the event working with schools and the parents of the children. This year, the excited school children were intro duced to beadwork after the Library Assistants finished reading books to them. PHOTO: NCEBA DLADLA

VICTIM HAS HOPES OF NEW LIFE TOO
Child rapist Tose sentenced to life NCEBA DLADLA JUSTICE was served when High Court Judge Jeremy Pickering sentenced Xolile Tose (33) to life imprisonment for raping and sodomising a girl (then 6) in NU12 Motherwell in December 2011. The girl now has new hope for the future after medical practitioners offered to perform a colostomy bag operation for her, free of charge. Earlier in the court proceedings her mother said the girl was asked to leave her school owing to problems with her colostomy bag - which she has as a result of the injuries she sustained in the rape and sodomisation. According to Child’s Rights Advocate Petros Majola, of Khula Community Development, plans are afoot to have her registered in a school. “Caring members of society are urged to ensure that a proper house is built for the mother and her child so that they get the dignity they so deserve,” said Majola. “I am happy that this case has finally come to an end and I want to thank all those who have played a role in this case,” he said. “As the Child Rights Organisation I invite all men to join us in the struggle against child sexual exploitation and I call upon all community members to report crime against children,” said Majola. After the sentencing the child’s mother, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the victim, said it was as if a heavy load had been taken off her shoulders. “I am happy he (Tose) was found guilty. We’ll finally have peace at last,” said the unemployed mother (30) who rents a shack in Motherwell. Speaking to PE Express Indaba, the sister of the child’s mother, whose name is also withheld, said they panicked during the
court proceedings especially when the child did not respond to questions in giving her testimony. On the advice of the Clinical Psychologist Karen Andrews the child did not testify during trial. She said the child’s intellectual growth had been adversely affected by the horrific rape. Agang SA leader Dr Maphele Ramphele (left) gave some words of encouragement and hope to the NGO, Mother’s Gift Founder and Head Mama Sheila Isaacs of KwaNobuhle in Uitenhage. PHOTO:NCEBA DLADLA

To stay in Restitution Avenue is a dream come true THE first 40 occupants of the Fairview Links Social Housing units, situated in Restitution Avenue, moved in on April 1, heralding in a new era as the area is known for the forced removal of non-whites during the Apartheid era. George Stokes (64) and his partner Angeline Kivietz (75), both pensioners, could hardly contain their happiness. “We are moving today and are very happy. We feel very proud as it is almost like coming home. I was born in Fairview but we were forced to leave the area to live in Gelvandale. I came back to my roots. I am especially happy that Social Housing is also a solution for pensioners,” Stokes said. The construction of the 368 units (at a cost R140 million) was started in January 2013 and the success of the project is an indication of how government (in partnership with Imizi Housing Utility and the Social Housing Regulatory Authority) is restoring the dignity of the poor. The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has a Social Housing Policy, approved by its Council, with designated areas for developments to break down the geographically determined areas by the Apartheid government. Anthony Ngcezula, Chief Executive Officer of Imizi Housing Utility, described the welcoming of the first 40 tenants of the project as the restoration of the dignity of the people. “It is also a tremendous improvement of their lives as we bring them much closer to their places of work and amenities. We definitely have a good story to tell,” Ngcezula said. Social Housing is a rental option for qualifying persons by an accredited social housing institution and the units are for rentals only
and not for sale or rent-to-buy. Buysile Mkavu, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Portfolio Chairperson for Human Settlements, said it is imperative that a healthy mixture must be found between RDP housing delivery, Social Housing and Flisp Housing to make government’s implementation of housing delivery more sustainable. “We also learnt hard and valuable lessons during the implementation of the award-winning Walmer Links Social Housing Project and can now apply that knowledge to other projects as well,” Mkavu said. Another happy occupant, Joy Steyn, said the Fairview Links is situated in an area that she considers convenient as she used to rent a property in the Overbaakens area. “It also safe for me and my children as the facility has 24 hour security,” Steyn said. To qualify, the main applicant must be a South African citizen, 21 years or older, permanently employed or receive a pension, the combined household income must be between R2 500 and R7 500 per month and the main applicant must not have owned property before or received a housing subsidy. Thobeka Gobodo (73) and her granddaughter Linda Jawula used to live in KwaMagxaki and now happily call Fairview Links their new home. It is expected that another 20 units will be finished fairly soon. Rentals per month are between R700 and R2 250 for apartments and the amount charged can never exceed 33,3% of a tenant’s household income as prescribed by the Social Housing Act. The official launch of the Fairview Links Social Housing project will be spearheaded by the Eastern Cape Department of Human Settlements shortly. – REPORTER
Ramphele was speaking to residents and volunteers at the Mother’s Gift NGO in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage on Monday after what she described as a successful visit to Addo in the Sundays River Valley. The Agang SA leader was touched by the suffering she saw from the “forgotten people of Addo who depended on citrus fruit for a living.” Ramphele said her visit to the EC Province - once the centre of education through Fort Hare University and Healdtown College but now poorly governed – was to remind the electorate that they have the power to unseat the ANC government come May 7 National General Elections. “Unlike the corrupt ANC Councillors, MPLs and MPs, Agang SA leaders would provide the youth with skills for better jobs. We won’t give people food parcels, but rather
proper education and skills to sustain themselves,” said Ramphele. She said their manifesto was based on empowerment, education, entrepreneurship, employment and effective government. Ramphele accused ANC leaders of giving the electorate food parcels in order to buy their votes. According to her, tax-payers money was used to buy the food parcels. Ramphele, a former student activist and freedom fighter, said she was a woman who cared not about going to parliament but the people’s freedom. Her visit to Mama Sheila Isaacs, the head of Mother’s Gift who struggled with HIV/ Aids home-based Carers without Government support was to give hope and to say Agang cared. She added Agang SA would look after them when in power. “There’s so much hunger here. Over 600 of our volunteers work hard and are not paid. We appreciate what the Agang SA leader (Ramphele) said. We’ll always open our doors for anyone who we hope will eventually help the needy people of this community,” said Mama Sheila.

to present her case. “Schools are categorised and those in need (under the indigent category) are assisted. We do have an Assistance To The Poor (ATTP) Programme that she might also qualify for,” said Mniki.
The institution must pay hefty water bills to the municipality every month while parents, who send their children to her centre, are mostly unemployed and find it difficult to pay the R80 monthly fee. Zenani is making a difference in her community by providing an Early Childhood Development (ECD) centre. Levels of unemployment and poverty in her community are however, making it difficult for her to do her job. “We receive weekly bills of up to R500 for water and sanitation which goes up to R2 000 that we have to pay per month,” said gogo Zenani. Her centre was one of those that receive an R18 000 per-month boost from MPL Tamara Xhanti’s Constituency Office and the Social Development and Special Programmes Department. She said that money would assist in paying of stipend, administration, nutrition and buying of teaching materials. “We still need to do something to get water. Perhaps the municipality must come here to see that we need assistance. Even if we can get a water tank it would help,” said Zenani. Their other immediate need was a playground for her 62 children. She is 64 years of age and says she is not getting an old-age pension grant like other gogos and mkhulus. “Government reckons that I am self-employed,” she explained. Nelson Mandela Bay municipal spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki advised gogo Zenani to go to the Customer Care Centre at Brister House opposite the City Treasurer building

Two arrested for possession of suspected stolen vehicle MEMBERS of the South African Police Service in New Brighton arrested two suspects in connection with the possession of a suspected stolen vehicle last Friday night. Police were doing a stop-and-search road block at Njoli Road Circle near KwaNdokwenza in Kwazakhele when they saw the red VW making a quick turn, said police spokesperson Constable Mncedi Mbombo. “Police suspected that there was something wrong and so they chased the vehicle as it started to flee,” said Mbombo. The suspects realised that police were fast approaching. The driver stopped the vehicle and he and the female passenger ran on foot in different directions. The 23 year old woman was arrested and while she was being investigated by the police she said she did not know why the driver
- her friend - fled when he saw the police. According to Mbombo, at that time the man phoned to ask the woman about her whereabouts. She told him she was with the police and they wanted him for questioning. “He handed himself in at the police station and when asked why he fled the police he told them he feared arrest because he knew that the vehicle he was driving was stolen,” said Const Mbombo adding that indeed when police traced the registration disk they found out that the car’s ND registration was false. The car was supposed to be BRA 058 EC which was reported as stolen in KwaDwesi somewhere in January, said Mbombo. The two suspects were arrested and are expected to appear in court soon for being in possession of a suspected stolen vehicle.

First Metro Arts Council Conference a huge success NELSON Mandela Bay artists have decided to work together in order to maximise their potential as entertainers, workers and sometimes employers. This became evident during the conference held at the Athenaeum in Port Elizabeth last Friday. “It was extremely successful, the
turnout was around 90% and those that did not attend apologised,” said Interim Committee Chairperson Monde Ngomyama, adding that the Municipal Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture promised to work with them.

Daniels was in Nelson Mandela Bay recently as part of her visit to the Eastern Cape to promote her 13-track album recorded at Cut and Edit studios in Johanesburg. Following in the success of her debut album Cula mphefumlo wam (2008), the second album took time to produce because Daniels wanted to be sure of her message and sound. “The album is a combination of Praise and Worship songs which are aimed at reminding the people of God how worthy is His name,” said Daniels a practising Prophetess serving in the wider Christian Family of believers. The album features Mzwakhe Myeni of Ncandweni and Phumla Mfene of the Lord’s Comforters. It has a sermon by Bishop Tsepho Machea also aimed at encouraging
Christians to hold on. The main track, according to Daniels, is a song to exhort believers to hold on, in spite of all troubles and tribulations because “God will never allow His people to stumble and fall.” The song was penned by Qhamisa Mpayipheli. KwaLanga Township-born Daniels believes she was pruned and tested by God, through her painful experiences of the past, and never stumbled. Daniels started singing at Sunday school and was a proud member of the Choir in the Junior and Secondary Schools she attended. She was featured in Ncadweni Christ Ambasssadors 2005 album,

EP Kings ready for Boland Cavaliers in the Bay REPORTER THE EP Kings are keen to impress on their home ground when they go up against the Regent Boland Cavaliers at 7pm this Friday (April 11), in the Vodacom Cup at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. EP Kings Coach, Mzwandile Stick, said the Vodacom Cup was a great opportunity for him to give back. “I am new to coaching but I was a player in the Kings set-up from the junior side and this was one of my visions to achieve in life. This is my chance to take all the experience I have gained on and off the field and give back to the team.” Stick has an illustrious rugby career that started at EP Kings before moving on to the Sharks and then the Springbok Sevens. He captained the South Africa sevens team during the 2008–09 IRB Sevens World Series which saw the team win the series title for the first time. He retired as a player in 2012 and went on to coach the EP Kings Under-21 side last year. The Vodacom Cup is South Africa’s premier development tournament. “To our supporters
I say, be patient with our youngsters; they are still coming up but the future looks promising. Look out for players like Aidon Davis, Masixole “Coyi” Banda and CJ Velleman – they are going to go far,” said Stick. Davis is currently in Cape Town as part of the extended training group of 70 of the country’s most promising Under-20 players. This squad will be reduced to approximately 40 players who will then continue with preparations for the 2014 IRB Junior World Championship held in New Zealand this June. Davis has already played for the SA Under-20 side last year. The EP Kings can also boast having one of the Du Plessis brothers in its ranks, Francois “Tabbie” Du Plessis. Youngest brother to Jannie and Bismarck, Tabbie is also a front ranker. All three of the brothers have come up through the ranks of the Vodacom Cup. “The players are looking forward to meeting Boland at NMB Stadium – it’s going to be a good match. Most importantly, they need the support from the people of the Eastern Province so we can do well and be prepared for the Absa Currie Cup,” concludes Stick. The game will also be televised on SuperSport 1.

Shining Stars eliminated Saders SELBY MADIKANE IT WAS a battle between the ZWIFA Premier League most unrivalled sides when Shining Stars beat Real Crusaders 1-0 during ZWIFA Knockout Competition at Zwide Stadium on Sunday. The game started with a fast pace with both
outfits playing attractive football. Stars maestro Andile Singaphi pulled the most important solitary goal which showed Saders an exit from the competition. In the battle of David and Goliath Swartkops United were into a 1-1 tie by Young Killers, but United won 3-1 in penalty shootout. Manchester City trounced Morning Stars 5-1 in the onesided affair. Golden Aces lost 2-1 to Gal City.
ZWIFA KO last eight draw games which will played a date to be confirmed will be as follows: *Swartkops United v Shining Stars *Manchester City v Gal City *Soweto Angels v Umanyano Stars *Major Chiefs v Rolihlahla XI
Gqubule, a VW SA AutoPavilion and Peoples Pavilion Manager bought the U-15 players of the team, popularly known as Amarhamba, new jerseys, shorts and socks so that they look presentable like other teams when they play, he said. This gesture would surely boost the morale of the team, according to Gqubule. “I have been contemplating doing this for some time but faced finance challenges. When I got a break just recently I decided to make the difference in the lives of these children who mainly come from the disadvantaged backgrounds,” said Gqubule. The hand-over of the kit was held at the Jabavu Stadium Club House last Wednesday
in the presence of Manchester United FC management and some NODEFA Executive Committee members. Gqubule told the excited young players that he too was a child with big dreams to play football at a professional level. He said to succeed in life they must be dedicated and disciplined in sport and not to be involved in drugs and crime. “More than anything else, you must love school and make sure you get education. Sport and education go together,” Gqubule exhorted the future sports stars. The award-winning no-nonsense former Professional Soccer League (PSL) referee and astute sports administrator Gqubule, a married father of three confessed to have a soft-spot for Amarhamba. “I played for this team when I started football,” he said. Gqubule was quick to add, however, that this he would do for any other club. Sparks urged other community leaders to assist sports development as it keeps the youth off the streets.

This became evident when five local amateur boxers brought five medals during the South African Games hosted by Gauteng Province in Pretoria at the weekend. Not only did Nelson Mandela Bay boxers who represented Eastern Cape Amateur Boxing Organisation (ECABO) bring three Gold and two Silver medals, but one of the boxers Vuyani Tupa was voted as the Best Boxer of the Tournament, an elated Mazizi Vumazonke said. Vumazonke, an South African Graded Ring Official thanked team Eastern Cape coach Mphuthumi Makeleni for Tupa (49kg), Jazintu Kasanga (63kg) and a female Oyena Jacobs (75kg) for bringing Gold Medals home and Amanda Jantjies
(60kg) a female and Anele Goliath (81kg) for bringing home Silver Medals during the highly competitive games in Tshwane. Said Vumazonke, “We are happy to announce that our boxer Vuyani Tupa was voted the best boxer of the tournament. Didi is currently in the SA Team that’s jetting off to Bulgaria this Friday for an international boxing tournament in the preparations for the Olympic Games in Rio, in 2016. Vumazonke thanked Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality for the support. “We are doing well in boxing, thanks to the metro municipality for the support. We’ll soon become the world beaters that we are known to be,” said Vumazonke proudly.

Tornado causes disaster in Motherwell HUNDREDS of Real City supporters came in numbers to watch their side clashing with Tornado which won the ABC Motsepe League 3-0 at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium last Saturday. Nkosiyethu Ndzelani and Siphelele Jonas were untouchable, thus showing their intentions of pulling goals for City. The home side front men wasted their golden opportunities in front of their counterparts goals but Mdantsane lads pushed more players up in front with aims of breaking the ice. Both sides went to break deadlocking goalless. In the second half Jonas was a jinx to Tornado defence whose goalkeeper was kept busy by Jonas. Tornado were awarded a free
kick which skipper Edlin Xaba kicked to City’s goalkeeper Sinethemba Poni who spilled the ball to the foot of Lusanda Sentse who scored an easy goal. City pressed hard but their efforts seemed to be in vain following Tornado’s second goal courtesy of Thamsanqa Moni. Tornado’s super substitute Stanley McIntyre scored the last goal. This is if the wishes of the founder and Chief Executive of this innovative boxing programme, Dicksy Ngqula, were to be granted. Speaking to PE Express Indaba during his recent visit to the Friendly City, Eastern Capeborn former SABC TV Boxing Commentator Ngqula said there were two more boxing events before they crowned the first PBL champion. He said he came to Nelson Mandela Bay to talk to the powers that be about the prospects of having the second last tournament of the inaugural boxing league here. “We’d like Nelson Mandela Bay boxing lovers to feel the hit and experience the excitement other cities of the country have experienced since the launch of the PBL last year,” said Ngqula. Their intention is to spread the PBL fights across the cities that are mad about the fisticuffs. The league has the support of acting Box-
ing South Africa (BSA) Chief Executive Loyiso Mtya. The boxing league, which tips four of the country’s best flyweights, bantamweights, featherweights and lightweights against one another in a league form, started in East London in May last year. The best boxer who will collect most points will take home a whopping R1 million prize-money. Boxers are currently paid R60 000 for each six-round fight. Since its start the league, which is broadcast on eTV, has brought a lot of interest in the sport. “Although we faced some challenges in the initial stages of the programme, we’ve learnt in the process. We’d like to continue to create a stage for our boxers to shine. We want to build the socio-economics of our boxers. We’d like to see our boxers being the real superstars,” said Ngqula with enthusiasm. Boxers like Xolisani Ndongeni, McBute Sinyabi, Makazole Tete, Grant Fourie and Cebo Ngema are part of the programme. Going forward, Ngqula said, plans were that the cities in the Eastern Cape, Gauteng and the Western Cape would bid to host the PBL fights.
