‘Tshawe must stay!’ NCEBA DLADLA

M

ORE than a hundred Kwazakhele residents marched to a KwaZakhele ward councillor’s office last week to demand that a volunteer who had been helping them with legal matters not be kicked out of the office. Residents say that the volunteer, Sabelo Williams, who is popularly known by his clan name Tshawe, has been helping them with their housing problems - something which the ward councillor is not doing. Members of the SA Police in KwaZakhele were on hand to maintain order when the residents marched to the office of the councillor of Ward 20 in Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality, Bongo Nombiba. According to the angry residents, Cllr Nombiba kicked out Tshawe over a dispute involving a housing matter. Tshawe, who is a neighbourhood watch chairperson, is a pensioner who works without pay and is said to use his own resources to assist residents struggling with legal matters. According to one of the residents, Dumile Bibini (52), two weeks ago Tshawe was helping in a matter in which a divorced man was allegedly trying to kick his deceased former wife’s grandson out of her house. Express Indaba learnt that Tshawe helped the grandson win the case as the rightful owner of the house. “We hear Cllr Nombiba and his Ward Committee wanted the matter discussed again, because they are taking the side of the old man. Tshawe refused to meet them. Now Nombiba is kicking him out of the office. Why? Who did he consult before taking that decision?” asked Bibini.
