Accolades pour in for Danny Jordaan

NCEBA DLADLA

T

HE election of Port Elizabeth-born Danny Jordaan as the President of South African Football Association (SAFA) in Johannesburg at the weekend has been hailed a positive step towards football development. The South African 2010 Fifa World Cup Chief Executive Dr Jordaan who beat his nemesis Mandla “Shoes” Mazibuko for the position is believed to be the right person to bring back SAFA’s lost glory. “We congratulate him on his election to the most senior position in SA football. It is long overdue. We’ve been campaigning for this, not only as the region, but as the whole province,” said Nelson Mandela Bay Safa region president Mzimkhulu Fina. Fina also got the nod in the elective congress at the weekend as the representative of the Eastern Cape in the Safa National Executive Committee (NEC). Fina believes that Jordaan, who is an adviser to Fifa President Sepp Blatter, has enough experience and depth at international level. According to Fina, Jordaan understands the operations of the corporate world and government. “He knows the need for football development at grassroots level,” Fina said. “Dr Jordaan has got a good track record politically. He’s been serving football with flying colours,” said Fina.

SAFA EC Secretary Isaac Klaas also congratulated “son of the soil” Jordaan for ascending to the highest position in the most popular sport in the country to date. “Dr Jordaan will surely bring football back to the people,” said Klaas. “Congratulations are in order. We’re meeting at my place in Summerstrand for supper tonight,” said Danny’s younger brother Andrew Jordaan on Monday. Andrew is himself a former political activist

and astute sports administrator. The Jordaan family was very pleased and passionate about sports, according to Andrew. He said Danny’s election to the Safa presidency was a culmination of the ideals they carried for the unified, non-racial and non-sexist sport in the country. “I am very proud that I left behind a united youth football structure including the SA Schools Football Association (SASFA) structure a few years ago. To date, that structure stands on solid ground. And, I know that Danny will be leading a very successful and profitable Safa,” said an enthusiastic Andrew Jordaan.

Hit singer Zahara will perform in Port Elizabeth and East London for her 11city national tour to promote her forthcoming album “Phendula”. Zahara will be in East London on November 1 and at Boardwalk Casino on December 8.Her second album “Phendula” is set to emulate the high critical acclaim and bestselling debut “Loliwe” that turned her into a national treasure. Deputy Minister of Police touches base in Bay NCEBA DLADLA DEPUTY Minister of Police Maggie Sotyu visited Nelson Mandela Bay yesterday to check on the progress made in dealing with the challenges that communities faced. The visit included MEC for Safety and Liaison Helen Sauls-August, MEC for Social Development Pemmy Majodina and Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Celiwe Binta. The delegation visited the Northern Areas of Port Elizabeth in a follow-up to the deputy minister Sotyu’s visit to Gelvandale two years ago. The visit was to engage the leadership of the metro, the police, community police forums, street committees and members of the community including Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) on the policing, social and criminal challenges faced by the communities. “During the Minister’s visit in Port Elizabeth in 2011, people were complaining about crime and lack of facilities to keep the youth out of drugs and crime,” said the deputy minister’s spokesperson Nomsa Hani.

Municipal spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki said the area has for the past 15 years experienced challenges of gangsterism, drug trafficking and drug-abuse, child trafficking and violence towards foreign nationals. “The Minister came to check the progress made by the NGOs but also to take information and pass it on to the relevant government departments,” said Hani, adding that they were not hoping to bring all the answers and solutions to the problems but to help government towards better planning. It being Elderly Week and yesterday, October 1, being International Day of the Elderly, Sotyu visited the Bethelsdorp Old-age Home and gave words of encouragement and support to the senior citizens. Nelson Mandela Bay Executive mayor Benson Fihla and some of the members of his Mayoral Committee formed part of Deputy Minister Sotyu’s entourage to the Gelvandale Police Station and Chatty Community Hall to speak to the residents. Mandela Bay’s Traffic Sub-directorate and Budget and Treasury Directorate also launched the Transport Month and Masakhane Campaigns at the Chatty Community Hall yesterday.

City honours internationally acclaimed local crafters INDABA REPORTER THE Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA), the City’s urban rejuvenation arm, honoured 30 local crafters as part of the agency’s Heritage Month programme on Monday September 23. The local crafters, mainly women and youth from previously disadvantaged communities were instrumental in crafting one of the main elements of Route 67, the “Beaded Quotes of Nelson Mandela” exhibition. The bead works have now been reproduced into a glossy Coffee Table Book – Beaded Quotes. “The thirty women are considered some of the top beaders in the Metro. They have exceptional experience in traditional beading techniques and worked in a workshop context with local artists to upskill them in the translation of their beadwork into public art,” said the leader of the project Dorelle Sapere who is the Planning and Development Manager of the MBDA. Various workshops were held with the assistance of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s Art department and various social facilitators in assisting the women in translating each of Madiba’s quotes into an art

piece. Speaking at the ceremony, Bay Executive Mayor, Benson “Oom Ben” Fihla praised the courage and creativity of the women in playing a significant role preserving the legacy of Nelson Mandela, after whom our City is named. “The City has huge talent that needs to be nurtured, harnessed and promoted in order to grow the City’s economy and lift people out of poverty,” added Fihla. Member of Nomakhwezi Craft Centre, Ndileka Qangule of New Brighton said, “The MBDA and Route 67 project provided us a unique opportunity to acquire the skills and knowledge. We were challenged to think differently and creatively but most importantly we’ve been provided with an opportunity to grow as artists of the Mandela Bay”. According to Sapere, the Beader’s Book will soon be available at local libraries, schools, art galleries, museums and tourism visitor information centres for viewing. The book will also be provided to visiting trade, business and government delegations in an effort to maximise the exposure of these local crafters. The bead works are on exhibition at the Athenaeum and entrance is free to all members of the public.

Residents must honour debt relief arrangements consistently, and on time NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay Municipality spokesperson Kupido Baron has warned residents making arrangements to pay electricity bills in arrears to keep their accounts up to date or risk facing the 90% set-off. The municipality had implemented this section of the policy on July 1, 2012 as part of the Credit Control Policy, said Baron. Baron was saying this in explanation of an enquiry after a New Brighton township resident Edward Makeng (78) was not getting the number of units he expected when he bought electricity tokens. “I bought R50 electricity on Saturday, September 20 and received only 4.5 electricity units. Again, on Sunday the 21st the same thing happened. I paid R50 and got the same number of units. But why?” asked the elderly citizen.

Speaking to PE Express Indaba, Makeng admitted to having owed the municipality more than R2 000 for which he made arrangements for R410 down-payments from his old-age pension pay-out. “I told the municipality to deduct the money. In fact I wanted to help myself to reduce whatever amount had accumulated. But this!” he said. Makeng was not satisfied with the answers he received from the Municipality’s Accounts Department, hence he asked the PE Express Indaba for advice, he said. “The consumer owed the municipality R8 523,00 and applied for Debt Relief in October 2012. He was granted an 80% rite-off (R6 554.76) in November 2012,” said Baron. The remaining debt of R2 242.14, according to Baron, was under a 12 months’ arrangement, and down-payment was due to be done with the current/monthly consumption account. This

Church breakfast for fundraising in Zwide NCEBA DLADLA THE African Methodist Episcopal (AME) in the PE District will hold an Annual Unity Prayer Breakfast at DG Ming Chapel in Zwide on Saturday, November 2. “The breakfast is aimed at raising funds towards the fulfilment of our Bishop Rwhymica Davids Jr’s Triple E Vision,” said Reverend Nomaphelo Myathaza of the organising committee. Explaining, Myathaza said the three E’s stood for Education, Evangelism and Economic Development - the aims that needed funds to achieve. “By evangelism we mean that we need to win souls for the building of the kingdom of God, and that will be achieved through planting new churches around Nelson Mandela Bay,” said Rev. Getrude Kom-

ani, the District’s Presiding Elder and member of the organising committee. With regard to education, the church has identified three women to be trained in Early Childhood Development (ECD) as they want to establish more crèches to benefit toddlers in the district. “We also discovered that some of the women, including married women, need assistance to finish matric as they realise the importance of education,” said Komani. “The Lay Organisation of the church led by president Eric Links came up with the idea of raising funds to increase the salaries of our pastors who are highly qualified, full-time and not getting paid handsomely,” said Rev Komani, adding that their ultimate aim here was to attract more qualified persons to the pastoral call.

happened but Makeng skipped the month of March. Makeng then made a debit order of R410 from the amount from April but still did not make up for March payment. And that was the problem. “According to the New 90% G-block rule, if an account has an active arrangement or has since 01 July 2012 had a debt relief arrangement/write off but is in arrears at the time the blocking application is running, it will be Gblocked with a 90% set off ,” explained Baron. He urged the customer to settle the arrears speedily to avoid the recurrence of the 90% setoff. “This should have been communicated to us earlier on. It would have been better if they warned us, “ said Makeng’s wife Nomhle Makeng. She promised to pay the R300 required to get their arrangements in order.

Cikizwa Saul from New Brighton in Port Elizabeth. I was diagnosed with asthma and tonsillitis when I was twelve years old. In 2009 I started experiencing backache and headaches and was later diagnosed with high blood pressure. I went to the clinic for treatment but in 2010 I overheard people in the taxi talking about Gotha products. I stopped the taxi at the Pick n Pay centre and bought Gotha spray and sprayed it on my back and rubbed it in. I also sprayed it in my mouth. At home I washed my swollen feet and sprayed my feet. Within three days I experienced no more pains and my blood pressure was normal. I advise people to buy Gotha products. They are excellent products and you will see the results. Go forward Gotha Health. I am Siphe Mfihlo from Whittlesea (Queenstown) now residing at Orange Farm (Gauteng) My situation was beyond redemption before I learned about Magogotha health products. I had exasperating stomach problems, my face was covered with something like dandruff, which was embarrassing to appear in public. I read about this Gotha health product in a newspaper and visited one of their stores where I bought Ostrich Oil Soap, Re-gen Skin Cream and Herbal Tea blend. I utilised this product for a while and within three weeks there was a massive change in my body and to my face. I value the product and I recommend it to the nation or for everyone with the same problem. Thank you for making a difference in my life and keep up the good work and for making us proud of your Gotha products.

My name is Siqhamo Mnyazi. Last year I injured my shoulder when I was playing football with friends. I experienced a lot of pain; I couldn't even sleep the first night. My radio was on Umhlobo Wenene FM and I heard about the Gotha Health products. I went to the pharmacy to buy the Magogotha twin pack. I used the Aloe spray regularly on my shoulder. It was unbelievable. Just 3 weeks and I was healed. I will suggest the Gotha products to any person with a sport injury. Gotha products work 100%. I recommend the Gotha product, thank you GOTHA HEALTH.

My name is Vuyiswa Gwaqu from Siya Street, Joe Slovo in Port Elizabeth. One day I was cleaning my yard, when I felt a sharp pain in my spinal cord. The doctors diagnosed me with stress, arthritis and tonsillitis. It was very painful. I heard people talking about Gotha Products on the radio and early the next morning I took a taxi to a Gotha shop in the Pick n Pay centre. I bought a Twin Pack and Aloe Spray. I used the products and after just two weeks I could see the improvement. Then my husband passed away and I didn't have enough money to buy the products. It was a very stressful time, but then I bought the Herbal Tea blend and the stress was gone. Forward Gotha! Forward. Carniboost + Hypermag - Twin pack is a

combination of Magnesium and L-Crnitine. Magnesium is an essential mineral for staying healthy, it improves muscle function and prevents insomnia, constipation, heart attacks, hypertension and migraines. Eunice Tokwe from Kwazakhele in Port Elizabeth. Previously I had a job in a restaurant, but had to stop working due to my knee problem and high blood pressure. I couldn't walk for long distances and it was difficult to stand for any length of time. As time passed I heard people on the radio speaking about Gotha Twin Pack. I visited one of their branches in Dasi, accompanied by my grandchildren. They had to carry me to the top of the stairs. I bought the Twin Pack and Aloe spray. I drank the tablets and drops in the morning and applied the spray to my knee. I have been using Magogotha products now for five years and honestly, I can walk again without any assistance and I have no more pains in my knee. I do all the cleaning at home myself and there is nothing I cannot do. Furthermore, my sister had blisters on the back of her ear. I also gave her Gotha spray. Within seven days my sister was completely healed and the blisters disappeared. When I go for checkups even my high blood pressure is normal. I will use Gotha Products till the end of my life.

Vukanibantu to merge with neighbouring Elufefeni NCEBA DLADLA VUKANIBANTU Primary School in NU5 Motherwell is going to be merged with Elufefeni Primary School in NU7 in the 2014 academic year, according to the plans of the Department of Education.

Not worried about the merger is Vukanibantu principal Amanda Ntsumpa. PHOTO:NCEBA DLADLA

But the parents of the school could decide otherwise, if they promise to help the pupils’ numbers to grow. Vukanibantu principal Amanda Ntsumpa, who was honoured with the Best Teacher for Change Award recently for turning the school around in terms of its condition, school-governance and the pupils’ performance, said the merger was communicated to her in a meeting held at the Port Elizabeth District office last week. “The Department informed me and members of the SGB of the decision to merge our school with Elufefeni Primary, and we agreed in principle,” said Ntsumpa. Since she took-over the reigns as the headmistress, Ntsumpa improved the school’s infrastructure. “We now have 555 pupils compared to the 129 I started the school with. The staff-complement has increased by five teachers who were otherwise identified for redeployment.” She leaves behind a legacy. Everybody who comes in to the school can see the efforts of the children in framed photos in the foyer. The framed pictures have subtitles that speak about achieving successes through

hard work as defined in the school’s new vision and mission she crafted with the SGB. Ntsumpa will this week call upon the parents of the school to inform them of the department’s plan. This mother of two was, however, concerned that the vandalism that her school suffered, destroyed any semblance of hope in the school lasting another 10 years. Computers in the administration block as well as taps, ceilings, electric wires, toilet appliances and windows have been stolen and vandalised. “When the MEC takes the decision to merge two schools it is always after a long process of watching developments in the school. And, this is mostly after the pupils’ numbers continued to dwindle,” said Provincial Education Spokesperson Mali Mtima. According to Mtima, the department takes into consideration the curriculum of the nearby school and check the feasibility of the merged schools becoming a feeder to the nearby school in the upper phase, in this case a high school. Moving learners from one school to the other could require the provision of scholartransport, according to Mtima. “But it is after consultation with the teachers unions, the school management, members of staff and the community at large that such a decision is taken,” said Mtima. He said the matter is first to be published in the government gazette where the stakeholders will be given three months to air their views and if no objection is recorded, then the schools will be merged.

Not even Gale Winds could stop the fun brought by the Northern Arts Festival INDABA REPORTER THE 2013 Northen Arts Festival was a resounding success. That’s according to its Programme Manager Juanita Prince. Not even the gale force winds of the past weekend could stop the festival that was on its 7th year, a delighted Prince told PE Express Indaba. The festival kicked off with a prestige gala event on the 24th September on Heritage Day. This was held at the Boardwalk ICC and sponsored by the Boardwalk and Spar EC group. Gino Lee and The Rockets received awards in recognition of their work in the music industry. Last Friday was pure torture as the event held at the Gelvandale Grounds had to be cancelled by Organising Committee and Disaster management team because of gale force winds of over 40 knots which were predicted. “The festival site was closed by Disaster Management to ensure the safety of the public but Saturday saw a conditional opening of the festival with stalls and the Fun Fair,” said Prince. The Cleary Park Fun Run with participants from Cheshire Homes faced the cold, rainy conditions. The Parade with marching bands lured the people of Gelvadale as they marched towards the festival grounds. Yet, the windy bay did not stop NAF supporters from coming out and weathering the unfavourable wind; 2500 people attended the festivities on Saturday. During the day local artists availed themselves to perform on a much smaller safer sound rig that was opened to entertain the crowd. Azz Veritazz, a smooth rapper from Westering kept spirits high, The Vandelators a crew from Bethelsdorp, Jonta and Loufi G also made sure to keep the windy atmosphere at bay. The evening stage opened only at 20:30 and many local

artists were given an opportunity to performartists like Lucky Charm, Earl and Agemi, Dejavu, Spectrum Dance crew, Shannon , The Nerdy Boys and PE’s Finest Dance crew made sure that no one was left out. Mr Shakes the disco legend of the Bay made an appearance and the evening was ended on a high note with the people’s favourite, The Rockets and Jodi Williams. Sunday saw a spectacular line up as most bands which did not perform as planned were accommodated on the Sunday programme. This was a showcase not to be missed, from the Cultural slot to the Gospel and showcasing artists like Billy Paulson, The Christadelphians, The Grace Band from George, The Soul Stone Band, Gino Soul, Creshwell October, Lora Joplin captivated crowds. The day was ended by Miss Mona and the M.A.D. Band who rendered an awesome performance. The evening and festival was closed with a spectacular fireworks display that ultimately left the festinos asking for more.

Metro boxers win five medals in SA champs NCEBA DLADLA HISTORY was made when five amateur boxers from Nelson Mandela Bay came back with medals at the South African Amateur Boxing Organisation (SANABO) Youth Games in Bloemfontein at the weekend. Nelson Mandela Bay Amateur Boxing Organisation (NMBABO) boxers who formed part of the ECABO Team, Nthabiseng Didi (50kg), Thandolwethu Damane (60kg) and Nomonde Genge (48kg) all won Gold Medals while Simamkele Jacobs (63kg) and Sandisiwe Gxogo won Silver Medals. “I am very proud of this team. They’ve made history because it was the first time that we sent boxers to the national championships and they all brought silverware,” said NMBABO Secretary Ntsikelelo Ndimande, adding that he wanted to thank team coach Mphuthumi Makeleni for a job well

done and local clubs for the standard they have set. Furthermore, Ndimande thanked former SA Welterweight Champion Linda “Black Mamba” Nondzaba for assisting the team with finance when they were thrown from pillar to post by those who were supposed to release the funds ahead of the trip to the Camp in East London en route to the Free State. “This did not come easy. This success is the result of hard work and dedication by our boxers. I want to thank them and the support we received from the amateur structure and clubs including bhut’ Linda (Nondzaba),” said coach Makeleni. Motherwell Zone Amateur Boxing Organisation President Mthetho Didi congratulated the team on a job well done. About the success of her daughter Nthabiseng he said, “She loves boxing. She’s thinking about it every day.”

PE’s sensei Sipho Tyatya honoured in Rio De Janeiro NCEBA DLADLA TWO Nelson Mandela Bay Judo experts Sipho Tyatya and Themba Hlaso were included in the Judo Wall of Fame in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil recently.

This, after Judo South Africa Vice-president and Zone 6 Southern African Federation Executive Member sensei Tyatya of New Brighton and Judo South Africa President Hlaso, a SASCOC Board Member who also presides over the SA Federation Zone 6 Board Executive, attended the 2013 World Judo Championships and the International Judo Federation in Rio. The Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Nelson Mandela Bay District’s Supply

Chain Management official, Tyatya pointed out, however, that it was not the first time that he travelled abroad. Explaining, he said he was first invited as an honoured guest in Paris, France during the Judo World Championships in 2008. “The experience in Brazil has been overwhelming. It has been highly informative. I’ll treasure it for the rest of my life,” said sensei Tyatya who joined the sport at Hoza Community Hall in New Brighton under sensei Themba Mazamana in 1971. In 1980 Tyatya was under the tutelage of Des Westernburg who “illegally” trained blacks in the city centre - as racial mix was not acceptable at the time, he reminisced.

Since then, Tyatya was hooked on the game in which he won many accolades and national championships but could not get selection to represent his country owing to the apartheid past. During his involvement in Judo, an overjoyed Tyatya said, Nelson Mandela Bay has produced nationally acclaimed Judo instructors like Sondisa Magajana and Phindile Ntengu, to mention just two. Sensei Tyatya believes Judo instills discipline among its participants. It keeps the children out of crime and out of jail, he said, adding that he hoped the Eastern Cape government would seriously consider sponsoring the development of Judo.

COPA CocaCola’s impact on football development SELBY MADIKANE South African Football Association (SAFA) acting technical director Fran Hilton-Smith has hailed the COPA Coca-Cola as one of the great success stories among the country’s development initiatives. Hilton-Smith is a globally respected figure in the work that she does for SAFA and FIFA in helping to develop not only young players, but coaches too. Her role as a FIFA coaching instructor takes Hilton-Smith around the world, exposing her to many different development platforms, and ensuring her status as one of South Africa’s leading football ‘brains’. Having been entrusted with developing a blueprint for the future of the game in the country, she believes that COPA Coca-Cola has a vital role to play in uncovering our next generation of stars. “It is crucial that we have tournaments such as COPA Coca-Cola that allow our young players to compete at a high level and a broader understand of what it is like to play in competitive football,” Hilton-Smith said. Hilton-Smith said,“At this age you want young players to learn about the pressure of playing in big tournaments like the COPA Coca-Cola, and to gain the mental strength

that comes with that. I have always maintained that, for our players to ‘compete’ on the world stage, we need to measure their abilities against their peers from an early age and COPA Coca-Cola gives them that chance.” Hilton-Smith has watched the tournament unfold this year and has been impressed with what she has witnessed. In her opinion it is at Under-15 level where you begin to teach players new things. “When you are young, football is just about fun and enjoyment, but by the time you reach a certain stage, you want to be teaching these kids technical awareness, health and active lifestyle, which is absolutely crucial. “Schools football is an area that needs more focus; we should have our schools playing on a national level all the time. COPA Coca-Cola fills that desperate need at the moment, and is very important for us. Players get scouted from the tournament for the academies at PSL clubs, so it is a big stepping-stone to a professional career,” he said. SAFA have recently launched a national league for Under-13 and Under-15 girls and boys that are in its first year of operation and will be expanded in the near future. The 2013 COPA Coca-Cola® provincial finals are well under way around the country, another chapter in the rich history of a tournament that has already produced top local

stars such as the Orlando Pirates duo of Happy Jele and Andile Jali, as well as Kaizer Chiefs winger Mandla Masango. Those youngsters who catch the eye of the COPA Coca-Cola scouts stand the chance of

being part of the International COPA Camp in Brazil next year, where they will mix with their peers from around the world in a oncein-a-lifetime chance to train and play under some of the best youth coaches in the world.
