Positive start expected for schools in the province NCEBA DLADLA EASTERN Cape schools re-open today for the 2014 Academic Year and to better last year’s results, the province’s schools are expected to start immediately with their improvement plans. This was said by Provincial Education spokesperson Mali Mtima yesterday. These Schools Improvement Management Plans

would be linked with the Circuits, Districts and ultimately the Provincial Improvement Plans, according to Mtima. According to Mtima, the Department of Education in the province was prepared to contribute financially towards the realisation of the plans of the schools. “We expect teachers to teach and learners to learn from today,” he said. Explaining, Mtima said teachers opened the schools in earnest last Friday and the Department was

hoping that by today (Wedneday) they were ready for action to improve on last year’s Matric results; which at 64.9% fell short of the 70 per cent targeted. He said the Education Department has managed to distribute about 100 per cent of stationery and Learner-Teacher-SupportMaterial in time for this calendar year. “Schools should also expect a visit from our department officials from today to check on their readiness,” Mtima said

He said officials will check on the School Governing Body (SGB) minute book to satisfy themselves whether the Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held last year, the budget approved by the SGB and School Management Team (SMT) and the minutes approved. If this was not done, Mali said they would encourage schools to fill any vacancies in the SGB in the event that there was a shortage of members.

Motsepe Foundation offers bursaries for needy Bay matrics NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay students who passed matric with flying colours in the 2013 Academic Year and want to study further but lack the financial means to do so, should not despair, according to Mongameli Peter, the local secretary of the Motsepe Development Forum. The Forum is a local development arm of the mining magnate, Patrice Motsepe’s Foundation, a national body aimed at assisting poor communities transform their lives through education. “We want those students who passed matric but have no means to study further. Preference will be given to those who want to study in the area of scarce skills like Physics, Maths, Accounting, Information Technology (IT), Engineering and Business Studies among others, “ said Peter. Nondumiso Rubushe, the Forum’s Education Convenor, said the funding, which can be applied for until Tuesday 21 January 2014, will address the academic needs of

those students who have already been accepted to study at any tertiary institution in the country. “We are racing against time. Those who want to apply should get the forms at their schools, or from the Department of Education in the Ethel Valentine Building or at the Uitenhage District Offices,” said Rubushe. Rubushe said those students with access to the internet can download the forms through the website: www.motsepefoundation.org, adding that the forum had also urged local municipalities to assist with the downloading of forms. According to Rubushe, a certified copy of the Grade 12 academic record or results, a motivation letter from their principal or councillor and an affidavit that confirms the financial need from a parent or legal guardian must be submitted with the application form. Those who qualified would be notified after thorough screening by the Education Sector Committee and the adjudication by the Funding Committee after 21 January.

Coega boosts property prices REPORTER

THE small, upmarket coastal suburbs of

BlueWater Bay and Swartkops are poised for significant growth on the back of ongoing job creation and new development at the nearby Coega Industrial Development Zone (IDZ). According to Ian Olivier, area principal of Pam Golding Properties in Port Elizabeth, who says Coega, in its constant, successful pursuit of new investors and projects, is driving up demand for accommodation in neighbouring residential areas. This is endorsed by Ayanda Vilakazi, head of marketing and communications at the Coega Development Corporation, who says it’s a common trend for people to choose to live close to where they work, to avoid stress, high costs and long travel times/distances. “As the Coega IDZ grows, we are very likely to see more and more people flocking to this hub of industrial development. “The core IDZ development area of 6 400ha is filling up and a significant number of mega projects is on the way to fill the remaining 4 000ha – including PetroSA’s R70 billion Project Mthombo, the liquid bulk tank farm relocation, GDF Suez of France’s open cycle gas turbine, the deepwater Port of Ngqura upgrade and others – making residential areas near the Coega IDZ a prime property investment area,” said Vilakazi. Vilakazi said this is spurring non-industrial growth through commercial enterprise. “For example, a major shopping centre is planned near the Vulindlela Accommodation and Conference Centre in Motherwell, an exciting development that shows that industrial growth is matched by commercial demand,” he added. “As mega projects come closer to fruition, with an estimated R5 billion to R7 billion

spend per annum pouring into the region, this will be matched by incoming skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled labour, and there will be an increase in people looking for short and long-term accommodation with a desire for amenities, services and lifestyle offerings,” said Vilakazi. According to Olivier, Blue Water Bay and Swartkops were traditionally bought into by young and middle-aged families seeking a coastal lifestyle, offsetting the daily work commute against the pleasure of living away from the hustle and bustle of city life in a place where residents know one another. “Now, however, as South Africa’s largest IDZ goes from strength to strength, the local buyer profile is expanding to include middle and upper Coega management from large companies such as Discovery Health, which brought with it about 500 personnel.” The challenge is going to be catering for this demand, believes PGP resident agent Phyllis Magda, who says there are only currently about 700 houses in both BlueWater Bay and neighbouring Swartkops. Already increasingly difficult to find, are entry-level priced properties, typically twobedroom, one-bathroom townhouses that start at around R700 000, she continues. The average selling price, which according to Magda is R1.6 million, buys a freestanding family home usually within strolling distance of the beach and comprising three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a double garage. The area also includes an impressive selection of luxury homes, some with price tags of more than R5 million and up to 800 square metres in size. These inevitably offer four or five bedrooms, four or five bathrooms, four garages and a pool, as well as fine finishes, sea views and easy, if not direct, access to the best beaches.

Boardwalk supports Chris Hani kids NCEBA DLADLA ABOUT 100 children coming from the Chris Hani Informal Settlement in New Brighton will receive stationery and school uniforms, including shoes at the Boardwalk Amphitheatre this Saturday January 18. Nelson Mandela Bay Executive mayor Oom Ben Fihla will also be present during the handover as well as the board of directors of Zonwabise Trust. These children are all victims of the fire that destroyed homes in the Chris Hani area early last year, and they were also treated to a scrumptious meal at the Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment Centre in December. “After the fire, The Boardwalk helped those families with their immediate needs like blankets and food and assisted school-going children with uniforms. But, working with Ward 17 Councillor Ncediso Captain, we felt we should add to that by giving at least 100 of those children Christmas presents,” said The Boardwalk’s Peggy Mokhatla who looks after the Corporate Social Investment (CSI). The children were treated to lunch, taken in to watch a movie and got an opportunity to listen to Christmas Carols sung by local music groups. Cllr Captain and some of the volunteers from the Ward spent the day with the children. “We raised funds and made R7 940 on the

Dolla Sapeta tackles his midlife ‘colour’ on gallery walls REPORTER DOLLA Sapeta’s first solo exhibition in his home city of Port Elizabeth in 15 years has been met with praise and respect by the local arts industry.

low artist and collaborator, who opened the exhibition said, “Whether you decide to remember the Dolla who lectured PE College art students for more than five years, who has exhibited his paintings, drawings and photographs internationally, or created the Fish Bird public artwork on the Donkin Reserve as part of the MBDA’s Route 67 honouring Madiba, or for that matter as the published poet, writer, or the humble, down to earth man whose art hangs around you, it’s your choice to make, and in my opinion this is the true value of Dolla’s work-he allows you to decide.”

The exhibition “The Midlife Colour” runs until January 24 at the Athenaeum in Central. Sapeta has pulled together a part-retrospective of his work from the past 15 years from private collections, including that of the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA), Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Museum (NMMM) and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU). Sapeta said the collection takes viewers on a journey through a vibrant Red Location that is no more, which he painted in the 1990s, all the way through to the stark, but colourful pieces he is currently working on. “The exhibition conjures a sense of isolation in its recognisable stylised Afro-pop expression, dealing with topics such as the despair of HIV/Aids, dogma, politics and inner reflection, all captured through vivid, but insulated township scenes,” he said. Sapeta has been dedicated to the arts from a young age, where he drew and sold comic books to his friends and attended drawing classes in a New Brighton garage under the guidance of the legendary George Pemba on Saturdays. SA title fights fans would like to see NCEBA DLADLA BOXING South Africa (BSA) Ratings Committee approved in December boxers who have challenged and qualified for the South African titles, and the list provided some of the must-see shows.

Eastern Cape Heavyweight champion Unathi Jacobs. PHOTO:SUPPLIED

In an attempt by the boxing governing body to ensure there’s activity in the fisticuffs, champions who have had an opportunity to put their titles on the line against mandatory challengers in the last three months had been instructed either to make a voluntary defence or engage in an international fight. There were in the list of approvals a number of SA title fights that could provide fireworks. These are any promoter’s dream fight with a good marketing strategy. Uitenhage’s Eastern Cape Heavyweight

Champion Unathi Jacobs has been approved to challenge Gauteng’s national Hea-vyweight champion Anton Nel. At 46 years of age, Nel (33 fights, 18 wins, 12 losses and three draws) who defeated Sibusiso Sibiya by TKO 6 in defence of the title in his last fight could provide an exciting ‘experience versus youth’ fight against the younger police officer, Jacobs. Rated at number one in the country, the younger Jacobs (9 fights, 8 wins, all KOs and one loss) who demolished Ivan Strydom in one round to claim the provincial talent last October and successfully defended it by knocking out Sithembele August, also in the first round in December, however, is understood to be preferring rather to challenge the national Cruiserweight champion Daniel Bruwer who also holds the WBF International Junior Heavyweight title. Jacobs is also topping the cruiserweight contenders’ list.

“I am not a fully-fledged heavyweight and would rather challenge for the Cruiserweight title, a division in which I am still comfortable,” said Jacobs recently. It would also be interesting to see how Jacobs fares among the other Cruiserweight international campaigners like Thabiso Mchunu (ABU Champ), and Ilunga Makabu (WBC Silver Champion). This year SA Welterweight Champion Tsiko Mulovhedzi of Limpopo must defend against mandatory challenger Mziwoxolo Ndwayana from Grahamstown while it will be interesting to see East London’s SA Junior Welterweight champion Mzolisi Yoyo facing his homeboy and mandatory challenger Ali Funeka for the title. Fans would like to see SA Featherweight champion Lusanda Komanisi who stopped Aphiwe Mboyiya for the title in December put it on the line against Oscar Chauke or the new kid on the block, Lwandisa Zinto.
