KwaNobuhle farm exports oils worldwide A

NCEBA DLADLA

FARM situated just outside of KwaNobuhle is producing essential oils which are exported to countries all over the world.

The farm Wincanton Estate, better known as KwaSela, produces the essential oils from the indigenous plants Lippia Javanica and Rose Geranium. These oils are used for a variety of purposes that include perfumes, soaps, cleaning agents and medicines. The Project’s Managing Director, Buzwe Wellington Manga (57), said they are involved in a multi-million rand project working with many countries of the world but fear that very few people in Nelson Mandela Bay know about their farm. The Rose Geranium oil is used to produce perfumes while the Lippia Javanica oil is used to make medicine that fights malaria as

“We’re also inviting people of the metro who do not know about this project to come and see what we are doing here.” PROJECT’S MANAGING DIRECTOR, BUZWE WELLINGTON MANGA well as kill the insects that cause the disease. “The KwaNobuhle Essential Oils Project on a 40 hectares farm was started by local farmers who requested assistance from national government to start an essential oil demonstration agronomy programme in 2005,” said Manga. The project was designed by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and approved by the Department of Science and Technology (DST). The DST together with the European Union

(EU) were major funders of the project. “The CSIR trained us at the Grootfontein College of Agriculture in Middelburg and ensured that we’re specialising in this form of farming. “We were also trained in business management skills, time management, finance and administration.” “We also have Science and Technology Department Director Eric Watkinson to thank,” said Manga. He explained that Watkinson opened their digital world and sponsored them with a Computer, among other things. At the farm they start at the very beginning of the process, from planting the seed in the nursery up to the stage where the plant was cooked, refined and sent out to the world as oil. “We are excited about the work we do here and can safely say that there are no go-slows and toyi-toyis for pay at the end of the month. All 12 of us in the project get our fair share of payments which is R2 100 per person.” Manga emphasized the importance of the training they received and said they could not put into words how great the opportunity was of working in partnership with the European Union. “We even won awards for this form of farming thus putting the name of Nelson Mandela Bay and the Eastern Cape province on the map,” said Manga. He said they would welcome farmers who want to get advice on trying this form of farming. “We’re also inviting people of the metro who do not know about this project to come and see what we are doing here. This includes farmers who want to be involved. We can assist!” said Manga. According to Manga, there were many projects taking place at the farm. He said there were 177 ha of land where people were doing vegetable farming as well as pig and poultry farming. He said they also had a site for stock farming after receiving R10 million from Land Affairs for Recapitalisation.

CHRONIC MEDICATION SHORTAGE CRISIS

Elderly in deadly struggle with clinic LIZEKA TANDWA

THE shortage of much needed chronic medica-

tion at government health facilities in Nelson Mandela Bay has severely affected the lives of many elderly people with some saying that not only is their health put at risk, but they are also being forced to spend most of their small pensions on expensive medicine they have to buy from pharmacies. Elderly residents who are patients at Walmer Clinic say they have not received their blood pressure and cholesterol medication for six months now and many have been forced to purchase expensive medication from commercial pharmacies to survive. Nelson Mandela Bay Health district manager, Dr Mbasa Mayekiso, said they hadexperienced challenges with a new routing system which resulted in them not being able to adequately place orders made by clinics. They also had problems with their delivery system. Hazel Watkins, a 76-year-old who suffers from chronic emphysema and osteoporosis, needs a monthly prescription of oxygen pumps to survive. Since she moved to Walmer Clinic for her medicine and care, Hazel said she had not been able to receive her regular monthly dose of medication with her only option being to buy expensive prescription medication from a local pharmacy. Watkins, who survives on the R2 700 pension she and her husband Barry receive monthly, said over R700 of that is spent on her medication. “We are living in terrible conditions. It’s as if the clinic and government don’t care about the

elderly. I don’t want to seem like I complain but after 22 years of paying taxes and being a productive member of society, I never thought that this is the reward I would get in my own country,” said an emotional Hazel. Out of their pension money the Watkins couple say R1 820 goes towards their rent - with only R180 left over. Hazel said on many occasions she has been forced to wait for hours to get her medication. “At one time Barry had to push my wheelchair from where we live at 17th Avenue to 14th Avenue. When we came back from the clinic after waiting for over six hours for help, my husband collapsed of dehydration because it is a very steep hill to our home.” Another pensioner, Alex Ross, who suffers from hypertension, said his illness has worsened because he barely receives adequate medication for his chronic illnesses from the Walmer clinic. Ross, who is a grandfather and pensioner, said he has been suffering from shortness of breath for over three months now. “There is an old saying that beggars can’t be choosers, so, we have conditioned ourselves to thinking that it’s just what we deserve. It’s as if the people who worked hard for this country’s economy do not matter. Even the treatment we get when we are at the clinic is appalling. No one respects the older people. Because of my age, I am prone to illnesses and I cannot afford private hospitals so it’s hard for me and my family in this kind of condition.” PE Express reported last week that DA shadow Minister of Health, Dr Wilmot James reported a shortage of chronic medication during his

oversight visit at Livingstone Hospital. Dr James was, however, lambasted by the Eastern Cape Health Department spokesperson, Sizwe Kupelo. Kupelo claimed that the Metro was in full supply and rubbished any claims of shortages in medication stock. Another couple who say they are suffering owing to the shortage of medicine at the Walmer clinic and who declined to have their names published, said Kupelo had made a false and damaging statement which has the potential of risking lives in the Metro. “These people do not want to listen and that is not fair to us. We have on countless occasions expressed our concern to the clinic but all they say is that there is nothing they can do. The problem is not with the clinic but from top management,” the couple said. Nelson Mandela Bay Health district manager, Dr Mbasa Mayekiso, said they had experienced challenges with a new routing system which was implemented in late September at the PE Depot which resulted in their not being able to adequately place orders made by clinics. “We also had a challenge with our delivery system. Because the company that delivers our medication is outsourced it takes time to deliver medication to all the regions and that could potentially be one of the reasons that the medication isn’t fully stocked at the time needed.” Dr Mayekiso said she would investigate allegations of older people waiting hours to get their medication. “We had advised all our clinics to ensure that people over the ages of 60 years are prioritised. That is something that is very important and I

think Walmer Clinic is doing so.” Dr Mayekiso added that they have now implemented an outreach programme for the Walmer clinic’s elderly patients. The programme would entail weekly visits to old age homes and private homes of the registered elderly by a doctor assigned. The programme will also look at providing chronic medication for the elderly on a monthly basis. “It is very importatnt to us that our elderly are given the best care. With this outreach programme we have assigned a local doctor to regularly visit homes and complexes of our elders. They should not be walking or waiting at clinics. We hope this plan will be in motion by December/January,” she said.

Health spokesperson insults reporter EASTERN Cape Health Department Spokesperson, Sizwe Kupelo, responded to questions put to him with regards to the claims of shortages in medication at Walmer 14th Avenue clinic by insulting the PE Express reporter. Responding to questions on why there has been a shortage at the clinic, Kupelo responded to the reporter saying, “I do not want to respond to this question. If your mind is as old as those old people you are talking about, I cannot do anything about that.”

FOCUS ON HEALTH MATTERS – BROUGHT TO YOU BY LENNON

Immunisation is essential for the health of your child ANY soldier will tell you that, in order to ensure that your squad is prepared for battle, you gather intelligence through reconnaissance missions before going into battle. This is exactly how immunisation works. Immunisation is the reconnaissance mission that helps protect your body if it is ever faced with the enemy i.e. childhood illnesses such as tuberculosis, meningitis or hepatitis B, to name a few. Immunising your child ensures that his/her immune system is strong enough to cope when it encounters childhood diseases. “The vaccine is in fact a tiny sample of the germs or bacteria that cause these infections, but it is so small that it in fact helps develop immunity,” explains Peter Jordan, Principal Officer of Fedhealth. Essentially, it helps the body to become a better soldier, which is why keeping up to date with your child’s immunisations is not only one of the best things you can do for your child, but it is also essential to the health of your community as it takes only one soldier to weaken a squad.

“If a member of the community develops one of these infections, the rest of the community is at risk too,” says Jordan. “In addition to helping your child avoid high risk diseases, immunisation also prevents an outbreak of those diseases.” While having your child vaccinated is not law, many schools request that your child’s vaccine schedule and immunisation records are up to date before admitting your child. “The vaccine schedule ensures your child is immunised as soon as the child’s body is able to develop the expected resistance to the illness,” he says. “If vaccines are missed or late, some can be caught up within the recommended time intervals while others cannot because the child is no longer at risk or the vaccine is not safe for older children.” The immunisation schedule spans 12 years, and Jordan says that with up to 15 immunisations due in the first year of life, it’s easy for busy parents to lose track. “We have a solution that will help parents stay on top of the schedule:

The Tum2Mom Immunisation Email Reminder Service (IERS). Tum2Mom (www.tum2mom.co.za) is an informative and entertaining website for new parents, and Fedhealth members receive a voucher code allowing free access to the IERS as part of the Fedhealth Baby welcome pack. Members use the code when registering for the IERS service on the Tum2Mom site.” Here is a schedule of immunisations as per the Expanded Programme on Immunisation in South Africa (EPI-SA): . Birth: OPV 0 (Oral Polio Vaccine) and BCG (tuberculosis vaccine) . 6 weeks: OPV 1 (Oral Polio Vaccine) and DTP 1 (vaccine against diphtheria, whooping cough and tetanus) and HepB 1 (hepatitis vaccine) and Hib 1 (diphtheria and tetanus vaccine) . 10 weeks: OPV 2 (Oral Polio Vaccine) and DPT 2 (vaccine against diphtheria, whooping cough and tetanus) ) and HepB 2 (hepatitis vaccine) and Hib 2 (diphtheria and tetanus vaccine) . 14 weeks: OPV 3 (Oral Polio Vaccine) and DPT 3 (vaccine against diphtheria, whooping

cough and tetanus) and HepB 3 (hepatitis vaccine) and Hib 3 (diphtheria and tetanus vaccine) . 9 months: Measles 1 . 18 months: OPV 4 (Oral Polio Vaccine) and DPT 4 (vaccine against diphtheria, whooping cough and tetanus) and Measles 2 . 6 years: OPV 5 (Oral Polio Vaccine) and DPT 5 (vaccine against diphtheria, whooping cough and tetanus) . 12 years: OPV 5 (Oral Polio Vaccine) and DPT 5 (vaccine against diphtheria, whooping cough and tetanus) The vaccines are provided free of charge at public clinics. Private clinics generally charge a consultation fee. With each immunisation, your healthcare professional will discuss the side effects; however slight fevers, drowsiness and pain at the site of the injection are common. “Immunisation is an important part of disease prevention and it’s a powerful way to protect your child’s health,” says Jordan. “It empowers parents to protect their children from an enemy they can’t see.”

Summer Season 2014 diary

WITH the much anticipated Summer Season 2014 on PE’s door step, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality together with event organisers Soul Good Events said they have prepared a relaxing and fun-filled December for tourists and residents alike. The Nelson Mandela Bay Summer season programme contains major events, spread throughout the Metro for the duration of the summer holidays, from December 16 until January 2. “Hobie Beach and Wells Estate provide prime activation opportunities as they enjoy extremely high visitor numbers for the events,” said Roland Williams, Nelson Mandela Bay Director of Communications. “The Summer Season programme was first implemented 26 years ago with the aim of officially ‘opening the summer season’ and to position the city as a preferred event city within the region. It consisted of a music concert and a fireworks display.” Williams said they had designed a programme to run for the duration of the peak

holiday season. “This will make use of the stage at Hobie Beach every day, providing sponsors valuable activation opportunities. Selected sponsors will be allowed the use of the stage from 8am until 5pm on selected days. “This event has remained and several others have been added with some of the events spread throughout the Metro ensuring a fair demographic spread,” said Williams. According to the Municipality there will also be a Summer Season Programme catering for the Uitenhage community at the Uitenhage City Hall. All events feature a national headline act such as award winner A.K.A as well as top talent from Nelson Mandela Bay. The events include: •Summer Season Opening concert and fireworks at Hobie Beach on December 16; •Phola Festival Music picnic at Walmer High School on December 18; •New Year’s Eve Uitenhage Concert and

Fireworks; •New Year’s Eve Hobie Beach Concert and Fireworks; •New Year’s Eve concert and fireworks at Wells Estate; •Donkin Reserve Jazz Picnic celebrations at The Donkin on January 2; The concerts and fireworks start from 4pm until 2am and the Jazz Picnics from 2pm until 10pm. Visitors expected by the Municipality are numbered at 420 000 and 250 000 visitors will flock the South Beaches (Kings Beach to Pollock Beach) daily, said Williams. North

Beaches (Wells Estate and Brighton Beach) are expected to accommodate over 120 000 day visitors and campers. Williams said Wild Side (Schoenmakerskop to Seaview) will have over 50 000 campers daily during the holidays.

Metro spends over fifty thousand in three months for refreshments METRO MINUTES THE Nelson Mandela Bay Metro spent R53 681.00 on councillors’ refreshments between July and September this year, according to the Operational Efficiency Report. The report will be submitted to the Budget and Treasury Committee when it meets today (Wednesday). The report reveals that the total budget for the current financial year 2014/15 for

councillors’ refreshments is R400 000, with the R53 681.00 representing 13% of this. In the last financial year, a budget of R306 470.00 was provided for this item with R50 474.00 or 16% having been spent after the first three months. The municipality also spent R42.785.00 on entertainment in the first three months of the current financial year, which represents 13% of the total budget of R334 300.00. The budget for this item in the last financial year was R390 750.00, of which R36 995.00 had been spent after three

months. The metro has combined its Operational Efficiency Plan with the Cost Containment Measures issued in an instruction by National Treasury. This has been adopted by Council. Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas revealed last week that the cost containment measures instructions issued by National Treasury are “auditable and subject to any findings made by the Auditor-General”. Replying to a question in the National

5

Council of Provinces (NCOP), Jonas said that the Auditor-General “will be auditing compliance” with the National Treasury instruction on cost containment measures. He also revealed that National Treasury would be “including more specific requirements in respect of the reporting on cost containment measures in its monthly reporting template”. Among the cost containment measures are a ban on serving refreshments at internal meetings.

Community works put food on table for previously disadvantaged NCEBA DLADLA THE job opportunies provided by the Community Works Programmes (CWP) help previously unemployed individuals fight hunger and starvation. This is according to members of the Ward 19 Ben Nyathi Primary School Group B Cleaners in Kwazakhele. When PE Express Indaba visited the group recently, members were cutting the grass and taking out weeds around the school since, in their own words, “looking after the environment for cleanliness is close to Godliness.” “We work with spades and fork-spades eight days a month for R568 per month. This is not enough but we are very thankful to our government for giving us something to do. It makes a difference. It is better than waiting for a social grant while you are doing nothing,” said Nontozana Matiwane from Kwazakhele. Matiwane, who is a mother of three children, said she even pays for insurance as she

would not want to be other peoples’ burden when the unexpected (like death) happened in her family. “I too contribute towards (burial) society and assist with the upkeep at home. This money is helpful,” said Nokuzola Cawe. They were also skilled in putting in ceilings and tiling and with more equipment they could do more. “In short, we are thankful for the jobs. Ngale mali siyakwazi ukugxoth’ikat’ingalal’ eziko . (This money helps us to chase hunger away),” said Mxolisi Mzinyathi. According to the group members, apart from working at the school, they have also started gardens on their own initiative. “We have our own food garden. We have a problem, however, with churches that use schools on weekends. They open gates and don’t close them afterwards. So, animals like cattle, sheep and goats come in and spoil our produce. Otherwise, we would have been doing even better,” said Nomathamsanqa Bheyi.

Contributions do not only have to be of a monetary nature, but can include social awareness and upliftment programmes that all staff can get involved in at any level.”

With 46 students sponsored this year and currently pursuing their studies in former Model C schools, 250 learners in their life skills programme, and a budding choir from Walmer Township, Masifunde learners are paving a better future for themselves through the programme. Masifunde Learnership Development Head of Fundraising and Communications, Edem Foli, says their work is driven is driven by the vision to restore and ensure a sustainable environment for the youth and the community of Walmer township. “Our educational support includes bursaries, life skills training, and extra-curricular activities in the

fields of arts, media and sport. We do this by training our kids, and their parents by ensuring that there is a greater level of respect for the power of education,” said Foli. “Masifunde contrasts previous approaches of other organisations with a complex approach, which adopts the best components of other approaches and integrates it into one holistic approach which consequently focuses on the highest quality and sustainability within its educational activities. “Masifunde trains young change makers through its own curriculum. They take over responsibility within their own environment and share their knowledge with their peers,” states their website. According to Foli, Masifunde is a privately funded programme and they depend on the generosity of the public with over R2 Million invested in bursaries since 2004. Since the incident, which left a chill down the spine of many residents of Serote Street almost two weeks ago, the Community Police Forum (CPF) in the Kwazakhele police precinct, which covers the Zwide, Soweto-on-Sea and Veeplaas area, have been calling residents to work together to find solutions to the problems that bedevil their community. “We recently had a very successful meeting with members of the community at an open space in Serote Street, where we discussed crime in general in the area as well as the events around this rape and murder of the 2-year old,” said CPF Chairperson Mawethu Poni. Young and old Soweto-on-Sea residents attended

the meeting according to Poni. He said the CPF was pleased with the deliberations and the plans that finally came through. The CPF and concerned residents including teachers also recently met at Henry Nginza Primary School to talk to school children about distancing themselves from crime when it reared its ugly face, Poni told PE Express Indaba. He said, “We also looked at possible ways to include the church as well as the church-based community organisations in our crime fighting strategies.” To this effect, Poni said, a prayer meeting was planned for the same Serote Street open-space on Saturday November 29 to enable believers and church members to pray for a crime free community. “As the CPF, we invite members of the church to come forward and claim the space for God. We want them to pray for a peaceful and crime-free festive season,” said Poni.

Church facilitates HIV/Aids training and empowerment NCEBA DLADLA YOUTH who participated in two-weeks skills development training offered by Mfesane, a Christian Development Agency, were honoured at a certification ceremony at Kaizer Ngxwana, Grattan Street in New Brighton last Friday. The ceremony was held by Reverends Mzolisi Kongwana and Luvuyo Ngxovu of Umzi waseTiyopiya Traditional Rite under Bishop M. Ngqono. Kongwana, whose parish is in Motherwell, facilitated the training for the 30 young people coming from multiple church denominations around Port Elizabeth townships. He thanked Mfesane, a registered NGO that works with local communities in a range of skills development initiatives and upliftment programmes, for the training. The training course also featured the involvement of local traditional leaders who are involved in HIV training for boys going to traditional circumcision. “The youth were trained in HIV/Aids testing

and counselling, abortion, domestic violence, rape and substance abuse,” said Kongwana, adding that this type of training was necessitated by the facts at their disposal. According to Kongwana, the sad reality was that HIV-infected people were still discriminated against and abused in the townships. Furthermore, he said the idea of making the church a skills development centre - to benefit not only her congregants, but also the local community, was based on the teaching by the late Bishop Z. Mjekula - that they opened the church every day; so that it was useful to the members of the community. “I suggested to my colleague (Rev. Luvuyo Ngxovu), the rector at Kaizer Ngxwana that we do the training inside the church to benefit other churches as well, and he bought the idea,” said Kongwana proudly. “We are still looking forward to having Mfesane group co-ordinate the training next year. Therefore I’m inviting all interested people to come and particpate in this empowerment,” said Rev. Kongwana, adding that dates would be announced.

Workshop to educate and empower domestic workers NCEBA DLADLA DOMESTIC workers who would like to know more about their rights are invited to a workshop to be held at the Department of Labour offices in Govan Mbeki Avenue on Friday November 28. The workshop, which starts at 9am, has been organised by Zanele Diniso, the head and founder of Periwinkle Home Executives, a company that looks after the interests of domestic workers in the changing trends of the economy.

Diniso has organised relevant speakers from the Labour Department who would address all their labour issues and talk about UIF. Diniso, of New Brighton, said she was inundated with calls from women who thought that they were being abused by their employers because they knew little or nothing about their rights. Diniso said her company tries to inform the women about their rights and responsibilities. “Some, for instance would like to know whether it was their responsibility to wash (house) windows and cars where they are employed. They think that they were being

abused,” said Diniso, adding that she thought there was a need for most of these women to be educated to take their work seriously. Diniso was, however, quick to add, “We guard against ill-treatment and abuse of domestic workers.” She said the venue was able to cater for only 60 people. She added that she hoped employers would release their domestics to make it in time for the workshop. Diniso has also opened the invitation at her Facebook Page. Asked what the women should bring to the workshop Diniso said, “Nothing. Pens and papers will be provided.”

Opera singer from Zwide wins prestige Young Artist Award REPORTER BARITONE Musa Ngqungwana (30) has recently been named by the National Arts Festival as the 2015 Standard Bank Young Artist Award winner for Music. Ngqungwana grew up in Zwide with a passion for performing at a young age. Being brought up by his mother and grandmother, Ngqungwana had a rich and interesting childhood taking part in a variety of activities widely ranging from rugby to reading. “From a very young age I was driven by my focus not to be a statistic and to achieve whatever was possible. This journey has always propelled me to rise above any challenges,” said Ngqungwana. His first introduction to opera was as a teenager when he saw a 1978 video performance of Die Zauberflote where Sir Willard White played the role of Die Sprecher. After school Ngqungwana studied Building Science at NMMU for one year, until he pursued his passion for music. While his grandmother had hopes of him becoming a doctor or engineer Ngqungwana felt strongly about studying music. Ngqungwana auditioned for a scholarship at the University of Cape Town (UCT) Opera School and in 2004 he was given a full bursary. Ngqungwana won his first award in 2007 for the vocal competition held by the university. He gained a Performer’s Diploma in Opera and Bachelor of Music Honours Degree in Performance (Magna Cum Laude) from the University. He then received a scholarship to study at the prestige opera institution, Academy of Vocal Arts (AVA), in Philadelphia and in May 2014 he graduated with an Artist Diploma. Ngqungwana has won numerous awards throughout his career to date. His accolades extend from Cape Town’s Schock Prize to Vienna’s International Hans Gabor Belvedere Competition, as well as an impressive scope of competitions and prizes by Opera Index in New York City.

PHOTO:SUPPLIED Ngqungwana has worked with Opera legends such as Angelo Gobbato, Marco Armiliato, Tito Capobianco and Kamal Khan. Ngqungwana is currently working on his debut role as Colline with the Washington National Opera; Zuniga with the Norwegian National Opera in Oslo and Friedhold with the Washington Concert Opera. He has begun planning for his performance at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown for his 2015 debut performance. He elaborates on the festival saying: “I always longed to be part of the festival, but not once did I ever think I would be one of the people who would receive this prestige award.” Ngqungwana loves reading and reflecting through writing and has recently written his first memoir Odyssey of an African Opera Singer. From Zwide Township to the World Stage. “It is a recognition from home soil that folks are watching us and wishing for us to rise to ever great spheres of achievement. I am grateful to Standard Bank for their generous support of artists; they have been doing this for 30 years,” said Ngqungwana.

Community Station celebrates 50% increase in listenership REPORTER PRESENTERS and staff of KingfisherFM in Port Elizabeth are celebrating a 50% increase in listenership figures as reflected by the latest Radio Audience Measurement Survey (RAMS) figures which were recently released. According to recently appointed Programme Manager Roland Gaspar this sharp increase in support is evidence of the beginning of a turnaround for the station. “We are tremendously excited that the listeners in Nelson Mandela Bay are responding positively to the return of KingfisherFM to its Christian core identity.” Gaspar added that past decisions to move the brand away from its original Christian Community-of-interest positioning had led to a steady decline in listenership. “The temptation faced by many Community stations is to try to be all things to all people. Unfortunately in radio terms this can end up in a situation where the on air product becomes so bland and unfocussed that it doesn’t appeal strongly enough to any listeners to retain any significant support.” Since his appointment in May, Gaspar has made changes to the on air sound of the station which include making the music format exclusively Christian Contemporary Music and

aiming programming at the Christian Community-of-interest in the Nelson Mandela Bay area. He said that the idea of narrowing the format in this way was not to exclude general music but rather to celebrate and build on their unique selling proposition as a source of modern, up to date Gospel music. “We are also not trying to be ‘sermon FM’ but rather wholesome lifestyle radio with a biblical point of departure and relevance to our geographic community as well. KingfisherFM was established with a licence condition that mandates us to serve the community of PE with a Christian message and we have decided to do so by being the good news station that motivates, encourages and above all brings hope.” Other changes to the station include workshops with presenters to gradually sharpen broadcast skills and improvements to the station’s brand identity jingles. A unique element in the approach to news has been the addition of specific good news bulletins on weekends which feature only stories about positive events in the broadcast area. “We don’t ignore bad news, but we make additional opportunities to celebrate the good which is happening in our community.” said Gaspar

PE Opera House to recognise and honour excellence tomorrow PORT Elizabeth Opera House will be recognising incredible talent and excellence during the Isakhono Awards to be held at the institution tomorrow (Thursday, November 20) from 6:30pm. The inaugural awards will be honouring deserving and hard working individuals after what has been seen as a successful year at the PE Opera House in terms of revitalising and the resurgence of art forms especially in the Nelson Mandela Bay townships. “Schools and groups have been taking part in the PE Opera House Programmes of 2014. These were the CASAC FET College Arts Association, Nelson Mandela Township Youth Drama Festival and Shukuma Provincial Dance Competition,” said Cingiwe Skosana. Explaining, Skosana said the Nelson Mandela Township Youth Drama Festival saw schools from the township and the Northern Areas tak-

ing part in the festival after being trained and mentored in various aspects of stage production, script writing and acting which culminated in the Festival in September. About the Shukuma Dance Festival Skosana said, provincial dance groups from seven districts strut their stuff in the competition which saw Amaphiko Dance group from Sarah Baartman District walking away with the crown. There was a Youth in Performing Arts (YPA) Programme which saw Ben Nyathi Public Primary School and Sivuyiseni Primary School being the current participants. Skosana said that even though winners in the different competitions received prizes, tomorrow’s awards ceremony was important because all artists will receive participation certificates and the 2014 overall category winners will be announced. – NCEBA DLADLA

African Renaissance Dance Workshop invites all IZIZWE Projects will be hosting their free African Renaissance Dance Workshop on November 22, at Something Good on Marine Drive from 10am. The interactive concert will feature Xhosa traditional dance led by Florence Mtengwana and Holland national, Frederique van der Lande. “Our goal for organizing these dance workshops is to connect the different ethnicities throughout the surrounding areas. If this workshop proves to be a success, it will be continued in the future,” said Van der Lande. The African Renaissance Dance Group was founded and organised by Mtengwana. “She is a talented dance teacher who would love to use her own free time to teach

the children traditional Xhosa dance. “We would like to give Florence the opportunity to promote herself and her culture, because in so doing the programme will continue to grow and endorse the happiness we are trying to convey,” she added. Van der Lande said the mission of Izizwe Projects is to revitalise community-centered organisations in the township, while also providing opportunities for international volunteers to learn about Xhosa and township culture, and to teach people about their own native cultures. Anyone interested in joining the dance workshop can contact them via e-mail on frederiquevdl@hotmail.com or jessentanja.e@gmail.com.

Lelethu Baby Shelter celebrates 10 years THE Lelethu Baby Shelter in Westering celebrated 10 years of caring for babies in need (abandoned, abused, neglected, orphaned, HIV infected/affected) in October. At Lelethu, babies between the ages of 0 to 2 years receive care in a secure and loving “family-home” type environment, during which the process commences either to have them placed in forever families through adoption or reunited with birth families where possible. On Saturday, October 25, a celebratory function was held to commemorate 169 infants who have received the prospect of a better future having come through Lelethu. “The event was held as a small token of appreciation to all their stakeholders, as without their contribution the baby home would not be able to continue doing what they’re doing in our community,” said Coreen Lategan, Marketing and Fundraising

Manager for Lelethu Baby Home. “We gave thanks to God, the amazing people who were instrumental in the inception of Lelethu, the loyal and loving staff who ensure the daily care of babies, the volunteers who serve so willingly, the various corporate and individual sponsors who continue to give so generously, doctors and other hospital personnel who treat the babies, governmental departments who finalize the administrative and legal processes and other baby homes with whom we have strong relationships. Also the many kind-hearted people who’ve supported us through constant prayer and various forms of donations,” Lategan said. For more information about Lelethu, visit their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/umephiportelizabeth, or contact Coreen Lategan at coreenlate@gmail.com or call 083 638 1414. – REPORTER

young pugilists to attend, awarded two 11year-old boxers, Ayabonga September and Lukhanyiso Jobo, from the school with diplomas. Thandimfundo Nene and Siyabonga Mpontshane, who both brought Gold Medals home from the SA Open Boxing Junior Games recently, were also awarded diplomas. Nogampula awarded diplomas to his former trainer Mthandazo Jantjies and to his own friends and boxing trainers, Khuselekile Gada and Thembinkosi Blou - to encourage them to continue with the good work.

“I am very happy to receive the diploma though I did not expect it. I trained him (Nogampula) and am happy that he did not forget me,” said an elderly Jantjies who is still involved in the sport. “Boxing keeps our children away from crime and drugs. We’re fully supportive of what Nogampula is doing. I support sport, especially boxing,” said Zamuxolo September. “I encouraged my child to start boxing for self-defence and to live a clean and positive life,” said Siphokazi Douse.

More professional boxing expected to close the year NCEBA DLADLA THE professional boxing tournament headlining females Nozipho Bell of Walmer and Ndobayini Kolose of Gauteng for the latter’s South African Lightweight championship belt scheduled to take place at Walmer High School Hall on Saturday November 23 has been postponed. This was owing to administrative issues

that related to the governing body Boxing South Africa (BSA) The new date for the fight is now Sunday 14 December, according to Andile Boxing Promotions boss Andile Siqwepu. “Everything remains the same,” he said, adding that the star-studded tournament remained unchanged. Meanwhile, Nelson Mandela Bay BSA service provider Mthunzi Mapitiza confirmed that the date of Andile Siqwepu’s tournament

has been changed to December 14. “Nelson Mandela Bay boxing fans have more to look forward to from now until the end of December,” said Mapitiza. Apart from Siqwepu’s fight on the 14 December, there was a tournament date on the 7th by a local female boxing promoter who asked PE Express Indaba not to publicise the event until she sorted out all her outstanding documents with BSA. The woman was otherwise certain that the

development boxing tournament would still go on as scheduled at the Walmer High School hall. “We’ve got contracts from Noforty (Gladys Tsenene) for a fight, also in December. There’s hope that Mbulelo Mfama’s plans to promote a fight in Uitenhage in December as well, will come to fruition,” said Mapitiza, adding that Nelson Mandela Bay boxers were hard at training for what is looking-like a big boxing extravaganza to close 2014.
