S Matrics started writing their final exams on Monday, the Eastern Cape Education MEC Mandla Makupula believes the Matric Class of 2013 will improve on the 61.7% pass rate of last year to achieve the 70% the province has targeted for this year. According to the Provincial Education spokesperson Mali Mtima the English Paper 1 Home Language, English First Additional and Second Additional Language Papers went well on Monday. “We experienced a problem in the Ngqamak-

“The Department has been engaged in many support programmes for Grade 12 learners,” said Mtima. Explaining, Mtima said there had been thorough Learner Teacher Support Material development and distribution especially in key content areas, radio lessons, motivational talks for learners, winter school, spring school, weekend and extra classes in almost all the districts of the province. Mtima was upbeat that this year’s matrics would do everything according to the letter. He said, “Since the dawn of democracy, our province has never had any learner involved in irregularity like copying or being involved in stealing of question papers. We are also hoping for a clean

report without irregularities when we issue final results. Children’s Rights advocate Petros Majola has called people of the province to “pray for our children” as “this is the most crucial moment of confirming what they have been taught throughout the 2013 academic year.” The Peddie-based Khula Community Development Project Director Majola also asked for the prayers for the Province to have improved results “in order to go a step forward from where we were in the previous years.” Majola further urged community as well as traditional leaders to protect the learners involved in study groups in the evening and camps outside of their homes. .

Toddlers found dead in parked car NCEBA DLADLA IT is still a mystery how two Port Elizabeth toddlers aged 3 and 4 years, whose bodies were found in a parked motor-vehicle in Zwide township on Tuesday, died. According to PE police spokesperson Warrant Officer Thembi Gwe, the children, Nasisipho Klaas (3) and Athini Slamini (4) from 4th Avenue in Zwide, were found dead in a parked

car outside a house on the corner of Scheepers Street and Second Avenue in Zwide. They were allegedly visiting the house in Scheepers Street on Monday with the 59 yearold grandmother of one of the children. “On her arrival at the house the children wanted to play in the vehicles that were parked outside. The grandmother ordered them to go home,” said Gwe. When the gogo returned to her home, however, she realised that the children were not

Kamvelihle police confiscate drugs and cash NCEBA DLADLA MEMBERS of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Kamvelihle near Motherwell arrested a 33-year old man for drugs last Wednesday October 23. The Kamvelihle police received information about drugs that were sold at Luthuli Street NU 2 Motherwell. “On following up the information the police searched a flat at the back of the house where the suspect, a 33-year old man lives,” said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu. The police recovered 448 mandrax tablets, 2,58 kg of dagga and an undisclosed amount of money. The suspect was arrested for dealing in drugs. He appeared in the Motherwell magistrate’s court on Monday. “The South African Police Service wish to thank the community for this cooperation in fighting crime and we also appeal to them to report all crime to the police to deal with,” said W/O Gwavu.

Drivers warned against car thieves AN alarming increase in the number of vehicles being stolen has prompted the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Uitenhage Cluster to warn vehicle owners to be careful. “There is an alarming increase in the theft of motor vehicles in this area. We’d like members of the public to be alert especially when they lock their vehicles,” said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Gerda Swart, adding that incidents of this sort of crime were increasingly reported in the Jeffreys Bay area. Said W/O Swart, “A number of incidents have been reported with regard to the usage of gate remote controls (jamming devices) to gain ac-

Volunteers aim to market the Bay NCEBA DLADLA WHAT started as an inspirational talk in Nelson Mandela Bay about a year ago, has given rise to a project aimed at putting the metro – named for world icon, Nelson Mandela – on the world map. It was a presentation by Mike Abel from M&C Saatchi Abel, to the Madiba Bay Forum, that gave birth to a project by the citizens of the city, to make Nelson Mandela Bay the greatest city in South Africa. Project Nelson Mandela Bay is an idea by “the good citizens” Michelle Brown, Kobus Gerber and Andrew Barton, and about 70 volunteers, to take the idea to the next level. Speaking to the media at the PE Club in Bird Street, Port Elizabeth recently, project coordinator, Gerber said, “We’re the good citizens who were inspired by a talk we attended and

decided to do something to market Nelson Mandela Bay as a tourism destination of choice.” Gerber said they were volunteering their time and services to the project. According to Gerber, it’s been a year since they started the work of first consulting big business, the metropopolitan municipality leadership and other important stakeholders, including the Business Chamber and the Mandela Bay Development Agency. “We named the initiative ‘Project Nelson Mandela Bay,’ and soon more than 70 volunteers signed up to turn our vision into reality. We now have elected a task team working at winnable ideas to kick-start our project,” said Gerber. He added that they had a senior official of the municipality in the task team. The Six Projects allocated to the task team to lay the foundation for a promising 2014 are:

* Freedom Precinct * 12 Active Months and World Class events * Creating SA’s Greenest City * Creating SA’s Safest City * Creating SA’s Smartest City (Through Education) and * Creating SA’s Most Connected City (Through Technology). Asked which of these were most urgent, Gerber said, “All six stand out. But, we’d like to establish the city as a city of destination for 12 months of the year. However, as you know, that will not happen if we don’t have the safest city.” Gerber said it was good that the metro already hosts events such as the Iron Man, the Rugby 7s and the Splash Festival. According to him, creating smaller events around flag ship events, was one way to fill visitors’ diaries, to make sure guests were entertained while in Nelson Mandela Bay.

Suspect’s days numbered UITENHAGE police were on Monday closing down on an armed robbery suspect after alert security company officials arrested another on Sunday morning. The two suspects had allegedly entered the business in Market Street, Uitenhage, armed with knives and demanded cash from the workers on Sunday morning. Uitenhage police spokesperson Warrant Officer Gerda Swart, said a security official who responded to an alarm apprehended one of the suspects on the spot and also recovered the money robbed at the business while members of the SAPS who also arrived at the scene unsuccessfully chased the second suspect. “The second suspect is still at large,” said Swart, adding that police were investigating a case of armed robbery.– NCEBA DLADLA

This must-see 10-round fight between two Port Elizabeth combatants presents Mriba who is moving a division up after his last fight in the Super-Middleweight and Hope who is going down after his last fight in the heavyweight division. In the main supporting bout, an innovation by Nelson Mandela Bay boxing fraternity sees the vastly experienced Siyabulela Kuphiso and the up-and-coming Lonwabo Roboshi (both from KwaNobuhle) contesting for the vacant Nelson Mandela Bay (the previous EP) title in the Miniflyweight division.

The difference here is that, this will be over eight-rounds compared to the previous 10rounds. In the main preliminary bout, local idol Lungisani Jikani will square off with Siyabonga Rhangile from East London over six rounds in the Junior Lightweight division while in another six rounder, PE’s Lusindiso Siyo will put his SA rating at stake against Uitenhage’s Thando Mahlahla. In the other bouts, all over four rounds: first there will be two female bouts, Nomampondomise Xotyeni (Uitenhage) who will square off with Bongiswa Silo (Western Cape) and Nozipho Bell (Walmer) who will challenge Ntombozuko Nonina of the North West province. Both fights are in the Junior Lightweight division. Other scheduled bouts are: Siphosethu Ncisana versus Mzwamadoda Jibiliza (miniflyweight); Asandiso Mancapa vs Ayanda Fatyi (Miniflyweight); Xolisa Kana vs Bongani Jim (Jnr Featherweight) and Lwandile Phillip vs Yanga Daniso in the Flyweight division. Football development bearing much fruit NCEBA DLADLA PLANS for South African Football Association (SAFA) to develop football at grassroots level are bearing much fruit. This became evident during the SAFA-Nelson Mandela Bay Inter Local Football Association (ILFA) Under13 Tournament which started in September this year. Nodefa beat Mofa 2-1 in that tournament thereby paving a way for a regional competition which takes place at the New Brighton Oval Stadium this Saturday November 2. A delighted NODEFA president Monde Mhletywa who doubles as SAFA NMB Deputy President said they felt it possible to honour their team and technical staff with their association’s colours at a function held at their offices in KwaNobuhle last Friday.

Speaking to PE Express Indaba yesterday (Tuesday) Mhletywa said this SAFA tournament was part of the grassroots football development initiative which is one of the South Africa 2010 Fifa World Cup Legacy Trust Fund Programmes. This five-year programme was directed at U-13 and U-15 boys and girls who will be matured enough and ready to represent this country in the Africa Nations Cup and the subsequent World Cup in 2018, said Mhletywa. Mhletywa said SAFA was selecting players from each LFA to play in the regional league up to the national league. The hope, he said, was that players who manage to be selected to play provincially and nationally throughout the years will be ready for international duty in the next five years. “That’s the plan,” he said.
