Boreholes for drought relief THANDI SETOKOE THE festive season is fast approaching and water consumption is expected to increase significantly as holidaymakers stream into Nelson Mandela Bay. With the expected increase in water usage and the continued drought, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has embarked on a programme to provide alternative sources to alleviate the current lack of water.

The metro launched the Motherwell Groundwater Collection Point on Monday, which will be providing non-drinkable water for residents and businesses for alternative use such as construction, filling of swimming pools and car washing. Five more boreholes will be opened in other areas shortly.

This Motherwell Groundwater Collection Point will provide free water from 8am to 4pm on weekdays.

Executive Mayor Athol Trollip said at the opening of the collection point, “The creation of this borehole facility is further proof that the municipality, under this administration, is forward-thinking and committed to delivering quality service delivery.”

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipal spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki emphasised that the borehole water is not for drinking purposes as it has high concentrations of iron and manganese and, therefore, can only be used for non-potable uses.

Mniki, however, encouraged residents to continue with water-saving efforts and to use 60 litres or less per person per day to help ensure longer supply, especially during the upcoming summer season.

Mniki pointed that not all municipal pools will be closed during the summer, adding that the pools furthest from the beaches will be opened. The municipality will also use bore hole water to fill those pools.

“Water restrictions remain in place and the municipality may be forced to introduce tougher measures to curb high-consumption levels and wastage,” Mniki said.

“Little water remains in the dams that supply the Bay residents with water and we now need to stretch our supply to last us until it rains in our catchment areas, which is not forecast to happen for months.”

Swartkops under threat from sewage, water hyacinths REPORTER FISH and plant populations are under constant threat in polluted Eastern Cape rivers and access to clean water is a daily battle in some areas.

The Gamtoos Irrigation Board, which is responsible for the management of alien vegetation in the Swartkops River system, among other provincial projects funded by the Department of Environmental Affairs, is making sure the battle is not lost.

According to area manager Andrew Knipe, the battle for the Swartkops has been raging for the last few years, and steady progress is being made, as teams of workers clear and maintain the river and floodplain. Since 2011, the project has cleared more than 765 hectares, while follow-up work was completed on over 2 672 hectares.

“Water hyacinths, in particular, need repeated follow-ups and will re-establish very quickly if we stop clearing operations,” said Knipe, adding that the population in the lower reaches of the Swartkops River was the lowest it had been

in years.

“However, the problem is compounded by industrial and agricultural pollutants entering the river.”

This, Knipe warns, is not a problem that is going to go away any time soon while pollution levels are escalating.

“One of the problems is that the capacity of the Kelvin Jones water treatment works is too small to cope with the vast amounts of sewage being fed into it, so sewage is released into the river,” Knipe said that when pollution levels are high, the water hyacinth population explodes, doubling every 14 days.

If the water hyacinths get out of control, they can cover the entire river, absorbing all the oxygen from the water, killing fish and plant life.

The solution, in part, lies in clearing the river of these aquatic weeds, as well as the surrounding land of alien vegetation, including eucalyptus (bluegum), acacia saligna (Port Jackson willow) and sesbania.

Keeping control of this mammoth task is project manager James Jansen, who works with an annual budget of R1.5 million and oversees three teams of 12 members each.

“One of the major challenges is that we’re treating the symptoms not the cause,” said Jansen. He said clearing alien vegetation from the river banks exposed the river to more sunlight, allowing for the faster breakdown of nutrients.

“It also increases the run-off, which means that more water gets into the rivers.

“In terms of the water hyacinth itself, there were stretches where the river was completely covered and we have managed to clear big patches,” said Jansen.

“This is vitally important as communities living close to the banks use the water directly.

Also, Swartkops has been declared a national marine estuary, so it’s a critical part of the ecosystem for fish breeding.”

Educating the public about the environmental dangers posed by invasive alien plants remains an important aspect of the work that lies ahead, said Knipe.

“We have the support of many landowners along the Swartkops River.

“With their assistance, we have been able to clear long stretches of river from Uitenhage,” he said.

“Fantastic work is also being done in the surrounding catchments of Sand/Bulk River and Van Stadens.

“The road ahead is a difficult one and, even though a lot of resources have been dedicated to the fight, more needs to be done if we are to rid our country of this scourge.”

Local adventurer to swim between Thai islands THANDI SETOKOE PORT Elizabeth-based swimming and triathlon coach Kyle Main is preparing to become the first person to swim between two of Thailand’s famous islands.

The adventure swimmer will battle the currents from Ko Yao Yai Island – one of the largest islands off the Thailand coast - to Phi Phi Island in a continuous 22km swim in Thailand’s Andaman Sea that should take between four and five hours.

Having pioneered swims across South Africa, Main recently turned his rudder towards international waters, notching up several ultraswims including the Rottnest Channel off Australia in an African record time in 2015 and the Straits of Gibraltar in the fastest recorded time in 2013.

“Each marathon swim that I have done has been unique and challenging. Some have been similar in difficulty and others have been extremely challenging,” he said.

Main described that some marathons had been tough in the beginning, others towards the end, while some had been extremely tough from start to finish.

“This island-to-island crossing has not been attempted before like many others I have done. This presents many challenges as I have no reference to the nature of the swim – which direction, tides,

cross-currents, island push-currents and trade winds.”

However, he said he had been studying shipping maps and had been planning accordingly as best he can with the help of some of his crew members.

“Once we are confident about the swim, I will finalise the route.”

Last year and slightly closer to his Indian Ocean shores, Main pioneered a 20km swim from Serpent Island, 30km north of Mauritius, to Flat Island days after he became the first person to swim from Flat Island, adjacent to the notorious Shark Pit diving site, to Grand Baie, a distance of 21km in four hours.

“The last two swims in Mauritius were of a similar nature to this one, so I can expect the similar challenges. Being so far out at sea presents a lot of cross-current chop and it is quite difficult to stay in a relaxed rhythm while keeping a fast pace.”

Ko Yao Yai is the largest island in the Ko Yao Archipelago positioned north of the notorious Straits of Malacca, one of the busiest shipping lanes on the globe.

Carrying about 25% of the world’s traded goods, the Strait, a narrow, 890km stretch of water between the Malay Peninsula and the Indonesian island of Sumatra, is one of the most important and congested shipping lanes in the world.

“Ko Yao Yai is on the northern most tip of the Strait, so I don’t expect too much big shipping,” Main

Main said during his swims he always has a second boat next to him with crew members to navigate, spot and feed him.

“There will also be two locals on the boat, as well as my wife, Cindy.”

Main departs on December 10 and his actual swim window will be determined by conditions and tides.

Port of PE kicks off cruise season REPORTER THE Port of Port Elizabeth’s 2017/18 cruise season kicked off on Monday with the arrival of the port’s first international cruise liner of the season.

Phoenix Reisen’s Albatros sailed into port carrying 830 European and South African passengers and 340 crew members. The 28,518-ton, 812-passenger cruise ship built in 1973, sails between popular destinations in Europe (Mediterranean and Baltic Sea), Asia and South Africa. She will also call at Mossel Bay, Cape Town, East London, Durban and Richards Bay. Transnet National Ports Authority’s (TNPA) Port Manager for the Port of PE, Rajesh Dana, said the port is scheduled to receive altogether 20 calls by 11 different cruise liners this season between November 2017 and April 2018.

Dana said passenger liner tourism was aligned with TNPA’s vision of opening the port to people. These

calls have grown from 18 in the previous season to 20 this season.

“The cruise season provides a big boost for Nelson Mandela Bay’s economy, allowing tourists on stopovers to access tourism, leisure and wildlife experiences in and around our Metro. We’re delighted that PE continues to receive its fair share of cruise ships as more cruise line companies show confidence in our city, alongside TNPA’s usual stimulus home ports of Durban and Cape Town,” he said.

Highlights to look forward to this season include return calls to PE by Queen Mary II and Queen Elizabeth, two of the most popular and largest cruise ships to visit South Africa. Other cruise vessels scheduled to visit PE are Nautica, Crystal Symphony, Silver Spirit, Boudicca, MS Europa 2, Insignia, Seabourn Sojourn and Le Lyrial.

Bursary kick­starts career for future pharmacist REPORTER GROWING up in Port Elizabeth, Angelique Hendricks (29) first pursued a path in accounting and earned her first degree from Nelson Mandela University (NMU) but soon realised her skills and purpose were far better matched to pharmacy.

“Studying pharmacy has been the best decision I made,” she said.

Hendricks, who is now a final year BPharm student at NMU, is one of the Shoprite Group’s 307 bursary holders for the 2017 academic year.

“This bursary has been my lifeline because without it, I would have had to drop out of university in my first year,” she explained.

New CEO for Business Chamber REPORTER THE Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) Business Chamber recently announced the appointment of Nomkhita Mona as the new chief executive officer (CEO) of the leading business chamber in the region.

On weekends and during the holidays, Hendricks works at MediRite Bethelsdorp, Shoprite’s in-house pharmacy.

“I get the opportunity to apply the theory that I’m learning at varsity and everyone here is very supportive.”

The bursary programme is linked to a workback agreement, giving students the boost they need to kick-start their careers.

While 58% of South Africans aged between 15 and 34 are unemployed and there is a shortage of funding for many students in need, the Shoprite Group is on the hunt for bright, hard-working young people who need financial support in order to continue their post-school education.

Hendricks is looking forward to joining MediRite full-time after graduation.

Mona will officially take up her new role on December 1.

She is an experienced CEO, board executive and board member who has gained extensive national and international exposure over the past two decades in various spheres of business.

Previous positions held by Mona include group chief executive officer at the South African Forestry Company SOC Ltd (SAFCOL), chief executive officer of the Uitenhage Despatch Development Initiative (UDDI) and chief executive officer of the Eastern Cape Tourism Board.

She was the first black woman to serve on the board of Good Year Holdings (SA) and also served as commissioner on the Eastern Cape Planning Commission.

She is a current REMCO member of ICASA and a board member and trustee of the Wilderness Foundation.

She previously served as deputy president of the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber.

She holds an MBA from Rhodes University, a master’s degree in labour relations and human resources, along with an honours degree in industrial relations and a BA degree (psychology and sociology) from Nelson Mandela University.

Beach clean up after nurdle disaster

Theodor Herzl proved they are an eco school when a group of learners spent some time cleaning the beach after the nurdle disaster recently hit Port Elizabeth. The nurdles (small plastic pellets) were spilt in the ocean in the Durban harbour during an accident last month and ended up in Port Elizabeth after being moved by the current. An organised clean-up is to be coordinated by the South African Association for Marine Biological Research (SAAMBR). Fabulous fashions from unwanted junk

Collegiate Girls’ High School’s Grade 9 learners, as part of the Grade 9 Technology syllabus, for the last three years have designed clothing from recyclable materials.

Last week saw the learners once again stage a fashion show, displaying their magnificent designs. Under the guidance of teacher Roelien Taylor the girls where given a month to create clothing designs made completely of recyclable material. These could be newspapers, plastic bottles, plastic bottle tops, tins or anything that could be recycled. The fashion recycling show was established to introduce the learners to Consumer Studies, which is a Grade 10 to 12 subject. Comedy trio at Boardwalk for one night only REPORTER THREE of the Eastern Cape’s funniest individuals will return to their roots to share the stage in what promises to be one of the most hilarious shows of the year.

Stand-up comedians, Rob van Vuuren, Donovan Goliath and Ndumiso Lindi, will unite for the Homecoming Comedy Show on Friday to bring some hilarity to the heart of where it all began.

From movies and television to festivals across the globe, these three acts have each gone on to attain both national and international acclaim.

They will bring the Homecoming Comedy Show to Port Elizabeth for one night only on Friday at the Boardwalk Amphitheatre.

Annual bonsai show and national convention this weekend REPORTER THE Eastern Cape Bonsai Society has a busy weekend ahead of them as they will be hosting their annual bonsai show, as well as the 2017 South African Bonsai Association Convention, from Friday to Sunday at the Diaz Club in Newton Park.

The convention is unfortunately closed to the public. It provides exhibitors a chance to promote markets, launch products, and showcase bonsai-related products, services

and educational opportunities. The convention’s mainliner for this year is Juan Llaga, from Manila in the Philippines, who is visiting South Africa for the first time.

While the exhibitors enjoy the numerous demonstrations, workshops and talks from national and international speakers at the convention, though, the public will have a blast upstairs at the annual show.

Trees from other clubs in South Africa will be on display alongside the Port Elizabeth trees.

According to Jenny Shute of the

EC Bonsai Society, the trees will differ based on the climate they are grown in, thus, it will prove interesting to see the kind of trees that grow in other provinces.

“If you think that bonsai refers to just those cute little trees in pots, think again. In almost every collection you will find small bonsai, as well as exotic trees,” she said.

The trees on display at the annual show will include flowering bougainvillea, olives, junipers and spek booms, to mention but a few. There will also be trees and tools for sale,

as well as a raffle with a wide range of tempting prizes to be won.

The Annual Bonsai Show will take place on the upper level of the Diaz Club, while the 2017 South African Bonsai Association Convention takes place on the lower level at the same time from 9am to 5pm on November 17 and 18 and from 9am to 1pm on November 19.

Entry to the annual show is R20 per adult, R10 per child and free to children under the age of 12.

Van der Merwe to return to Aldo Scribante Raceway REPORTER THE legendary South Africa rally and track racing champion, Sarel van der Merwe (71), also known as Supervan, will make his return to Aldo Scribante Raceway in Port Elizabeth on Saturday when he takes part in the bumper race meeting.

Supervan will be participating in the historic and retroracing class, driving a high powered Mazda RX 2 Rotary race car.

The event, which has received over 200 entries so far, will start with sprint races at 9am for motorcycles and cars, while the afternoon is filled with motorcycle endurance races made up of the Klinicare PE 100 of 20 laps for historic, powersport, KTM, masters and breakfast run riders, followed by the Old Mutual International 40 lap PE 200 that will feature the high-speed 600cc, BOTTs and Unlimited Riders.

At 6pm the cars will take to the circuit for the start of the Midas Three-Hour Endurance

Race. In all the endurance races, the competitors will have to make at least one compulsory pit stop.

During the stop, there will be driver and rider changes, while their vehicles are refueled, tyres are changed and the technicians working against the clock to get competitors back on track as soon as possible.

Entry to the event is R30 per person and free to children under the age of 12.

Pole-sitter Valtteri Bottas was pipped off the line by Vettel’s Ferrari and never truly threatened for the lead of the race.

Besides snatching pole by less than half a tenth, it’s been a difficult few months for Bottas with several off-colour performance littered throughout the second half of his season. Nevertheless, his pace wasn’t far off Vettel’s at all and it was perhaps only the lack of courage into turn one that cost him victory in Brazil.

The end of 71 laps saw the top three covered by roughly five seconds with Kimi Raikkonen taking the final step of the podium.

The Ferrari driver, on 40-lap old tyres, valiantly held off a charging Lewis Hamilton who had scythed his way through the field to go from a last place start from the pitlane to fourth by the end of the race.

Hamilton’s uncharacteristic crash in qualifying may have reduced him to a pitlane start, but the silver lining was a Mercedes power unit at full tilt and a newly crowned world champion willing and able to pull off several excellent overtakes.

Despite a lap time advantage of more than 1.5 seconds, and fresher tyres, he was ultimately not able to take third place off Raikkonen.

The last few weeks have been trying for manufacturer Renault and the teams they supply in the pitlane. So much so that a spat broke out between Renault boss Cyril Abiteboul and Toro Rosso team principal Franz Tost.

While Alain Prost stepped in to pour some cold water on the otherwise spicy discontent from both sides, it is obvious that Renault are struggling towards the end of the season. So much in fact that they’ve ordered all teams running the French manu-

facturer’s power unit to turn down the performance output because of reliability fears.

It explains then what happened to Red Bull’s early weekend pace, as it was nowhere to be found on Sunday. With the deficit, the best Max Verstappen could finish was fifth ahead of Daniel Ricciardo in sixth who started from the back of the grid due to, you guessed it, engine penalties.

Power units continue to be the biggest talking point in F1 with the first meeting on what 2021 regulations could look like having already taken place.

More seriously, however, is the fact that in 2018, teams will have a maximum of three engines to complete the season with and going beyond this allocation, which they undoubtedly will, while triggering grid penalties.

It’s a ridiculous requirement given that no team will be able to stick to it and it should be redressed as soon as possible.

On the track Felipe Massa delivered a typically plucky performance to hold on to a solid seventh place finish ahead of Fernando Alonso in eighth. Sergio Perez, merely a tenth behind Alonso, had to settle for ninth while Renault’s Nico Hulkenberg rounded out the top 10.

To say it’s been a difficult few months for Ferrari would likely be one of the biggest understatements of the year. After all, as they headed into the summer breaks after the Hungarian Grand Prix, they had every expectation of winning the championship.

But it all went horribly sideways as that Hungarian GP turned out to be Vettel’s last win. His win in Brazil, a controlled drive from the front for all of the 71 laps, will be shot in the arm not only for him but for everyone in Maranello - after all 2018 isn’t that far off.

Parent makes a difference to junior soccer teams SELBY MADIKANE YOUNG Romans FC had reason to celebrate last Wednesday when a parent made a donation to their u/13 and u/15 teams.

The donation came in the form of two kits, six balls, two stopwatches and two whistles for the junior teams of the Motherwell NU 1-based club.

According to Romans’ head coach Thobela Dekeda, the parent, Noncedo Klaas, who is a qualified nurse rendering her services in Saudi Arabia, decided to buy the kit for their junior teams because she saw that they wore senior team kits when they were playing the games.

Dekeda said that Klaas has made a huge difference to their junior teams that have been strug-

gling for quite a long time.

“Klaas, who played in Real Strikers FC Ladies team in the Safa Halala Cup, has rescued our club tremendously.

“We have no financial means to purchase kits for our teams, but Klaas was touched when she noticed our juniors had no playing kit at all.

“Her two sons and two nephews play in our u/13 and u/15 teams.

“Our junior teams are highly motivated by this donation.

“The spirit in our teams is very high. In 2009 one parent also came aboard by securing a sponsorship from his employer for the senior team.

“We urge some parents of the players to reveal our situation to their employers so that our club could be taken to another level,” said Dekeda.

Dekeda thanked Klaas for making a huge difference to their club.

“Klaas has changed our players’ lives. She has made huge difference to the less fortunate club. I want to thank Klaas because she has played a big role in fighting crime through sport.

“We would like to assure Klaas that we will sustain the kits and the equipment that she had bought for us,” concluded Dekeda.

Thunderbirds qualify for national champs SELBY MADIKANE SAFA Eastern Cape hosted its Sasol League provincial play-offs in East London on November 4, where Thunderbirds Ladies ended up taking the honours.

During the play-offs, Thunderbirds Ladies registered an impressive 3-1 triumph over Red Roses Ladies.

The victory saw Thunderbirds Ladies sneaking to the top of the league, while Roses ended their campaign in the second spot.

According to Safa Eastern Cape general secretary Isaac Klaas who congratulated Thunderbirds for winning the 2017 league, Thunderbirds will represent the Eastern Cape province in the Sasol League National ICQC 2018-20 Championships in Nelspruit next month.

Drama ensued after Highbury FC and SUBS finished the game without Head Coach Sisa Mbonda and skipper Bathandwa Zondani in the first and second half respectively.

Highbury’s coach was ordered by the referee to relinquish his services to his assistant coach, Lingelethu Gcwabe, after an altercation between the two officials.

Zondani was given his marching orders after being cautioned twice.
