FIRST OF ITS KIND IN TOWNSHIP: BOOST FOR EMERGING ENTREPRENEURS

Business centre opens in Veeplaas REPORTER

H

ISTORY was made last week when the Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor, Councillor Athol Trollip, officially opened the Veeplaas Business Hive to assist local emerging businesses and aspiring business people from the Veeplaas community and the surrounding

areas. According to NMBM spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki the Veeplaas community and aspiring entrepreneurs have been waiting 20 years hoping to make a difference in the township’s economy. He said the business hive is the first of its kind in the township and joins the main branch, situated in

Kwantu Towers, to Vuyisile Mini Square. “The main objective of this initiative is to create ease of access and convenience for township entrepreneurs, who often struggle to travel back and forth to the CBD for the services provided by the incubator, due to financial constraints. “This is a reinforcement of one

of the Mandela Bay Municipality’s development pillars of creating an opportunity city,” Mniki said. Addressing the community of Veeplaas, media and a number of local emerging business owners, Trollip encouraged the community and entrepreneurs of Veeplaas to be bold and be prepared to work hard for the success of their businesses.

“If you work hard and commit yourself to grow your business, the municipality will give you full support. We are doing this because we understand that a successful local business will not only benefit the owner, it will also assist in creating much-needed jobs and be an inspiration to others,” Trollip said.

Prins, boasting a diploma in traffic services and a qualification in municipal police management, started his career in 1993 and worked as an assistant traffic chief in Mossel Bay, as well as the manager of protection services at Koukamma Municipality, among others. Robile started his career at the NMBM as a security guard in 1990 and was promoted to assistant security officer in 1991. In 1994 he became a traffic officer and earned another promotion in 1999 to become senior traffic officer, before being appointed in 2004 as the assistant director for Secu-

Hans retired in 2010 so that position has been vacant for seven years. Robile has acted in the position since 2012. “Both Prins and Robile started their new roles from November 1. “As you are aware, we already appointed an experienced executive director in Advocate Keith Meyer. He starts on December 1. “For the first time in nine years we have a full complement of senior staff at Security Services and are well on our way to fill other positions as well. “We have the summer season ahead of us and with this team in place, we are confident that we will deliver a safe city for tourists and residents alike,” Best concluded.

REPORTER

PE Express would hereby like to apologize for the printing error on Worsking's advert dated 1 November 2017.

BY June this year the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality had successfully filled 1 055 of 1 181 available and funded municipal vacancies. In a recent statement, NMB Executive Mayor Councillor Athol Trollip said, “91 of these filled positions were critical vacancies, which will hugely support the government’s effort to improve service delivery. “The balance of the positions were either contractual, internal or standard vacancies.” He added that it could mean faster turnaround times for service delivery faults and smoother operations at customer care centres. “Corporate services MMC councillor Dean Biddulph has been methodical in

getting the municipality’s engine room directorate working again.” The new 2017/18 financial year has already seen 30% of funded critical vacancies filled, amounting to 107 out of 352 positions. The vast majority of these appointments were in the public health, electricity and energy and budget and treasury directorates, specifically in support of the municipality’s commitment to improve service delivery. The administration is on track to spend over R93 million to fill a total of 352 critical vacancies by the end of June next year. “One of this administration’s promises from the outset was to focus on improving systems in support of improving service delivery. While the road ahead is long, the city is making progress as the administration stabilises and processes and systems are overhauled,” Trollip said.

Shoe business: Daughters follow in father’s footsteps THANDI SETOKOE INSPIRED by their father, who started working at a shoe factory from the early age of 13 in order to make ends meet, sisters Roxane Titus and VidaAnne Smith, are now following in his footsteps and have established a shoe business called RV Footwear. The partnership between the sisters was established in 2013 and over the years, operations have been characterised by growth, which has allowed them to contribute to employment opportunities for the community in the Metro amid low employment rates in the Eastern Cape. Last year the company was selected as one of the top 24 winners in the Pick n Pay Boost Your Biz competition which is aimed at giving small business owners the tools they will need to take their business ideas to the next level. “It was a major boost for our company and a fantastic opportunity. “To be able to grow our business through a respected retailer such as Pick n Pay is more than the cherry on top,” Titus said. She added that the new business had allowed the company to expand its workforce and production. “The business had been a cut, make and

RV Footwear also manufactures men’s veldt boots and shoes, ladies’ sandals and baby shoes. “We certainly support locals in terms of our materials.” Employing more than 100 staff members, the shoe factory currently supplies to soughtafter wholesale customers who, in turn, supply to top retail stores, which, therefore, makes them the wholesalers’ first tier supplier of shoes. “All our shoes are handmade which gives us the capability to make any size shoe to accommodate people with disabilities as well as very large sizes.”

Young star’s international dream comes true THANDI SETOKOE ONLY 15 years old and already a star in the making, multitalented Tamika Karelse will experience a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity next year when she represents South Africa in the United States of America at the ARTS International Showcase from July 23 to 29. The platform will afford the Grade 9 learner from Port Elizabeth’s Alexander Road High School an opportunity to perform in front of an international panel of agents, record labels, casting directors, managers and producers from Hollywood, Miami, New York City, Atlanta and as far as Europe and Asia. “Drama has always been one of my first loves and being granted this opportunity means that I can now showcase the product of my hard work. “It will also enable me to grow and learn as an artist and develop my character,” the over-

joyed teen said. The road to Karelse’s dream come true began when she wowed judge Elsubie Verlinden – the director of Just You Model and Artist Management and Regional Director of the International Applause Rising Talent Showcase with her monologue performance at the Opera House in June. She then received a callback to participate in the recent International ARTS Talent Showcase in Johannesburg, where she had to leave a mark among a panel of renowned judges such as Kimberly Myers, a talent scout with more than 20 years’ experience, Rhavyann Drummer, the independent casting director of Tyler Perry Studios and Oprah Winfrey Networks who was scouting talent for the New York Film Academy. She described the experience as overwhelming but said she enjoyed every minute as she was doing what she loves. “Travelling abroad had been one of my longterm goals but never did it crossed my mind

that such a big opportunity would allow me to reach my dream.” Her proud mother, Elestine Karelse, said she was truly overjoyed and in awe. “Having received the call just after midnight, it felt quite surreal, but as the news sunk in, I felt extremely proud of Tamika, knowing that she had been passionately working towards her dream. “She is a true testimony that nothing is impossible.” Karelse will be attending two boot camp trainings in Johannesburg, hosted by Just You Model and Artist Management in preparation for the event as she will not only be performing a monologue but will also be groomed in acting, modelling, singing and dancing. She is currently with Dare2Dance Studios, registered as a Latin and ballroom dancer, and has recently received honours in the bronze level.

They will be heating up the city’s shores on Friday at the Boardwalk, taking patrons on a nostalgia-filled journey of booming beats, rhythmic guitars and memorable melodies.

Girl dreams of going on tour with Children’s Choir REPORTER “THE only time Bronwyn isn’t singing is when she studies or sleeps.” This according to Wanda and Desmond Morton who desperately want their daughter, Bronwyn, to go on tour with the Eastern Cape Children’s Choir (ECCC) in Europe next year. The ECCC, which is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, consists of 50 to 60 children between the ages of 11 and 15. They will be going on the ECCC’s 13th international tour next year. However, the parents are responsible for paying the costs of the trip for their children and many of them are struggling to raise the funds, including the Mortons. Wanda had kicked of the fundraising campaign with enthusiasm, hosting a sokkie and raffling vouchers among friends and family when their plan hit a major snag. “I won’t be able to continue fundraising due to my rapidly deteriorating health, diverticular disease which causes air pockets in the colon. I had to undergo an urgent operation but had to delay to do fundraising,” said Wanda. “With a third operation on both hands and the colon operation I will be unable to do anything for three months. I will be devastated if Bron-

wyn cannot participate in the tour because of a lack of funds.” Bronwyn (13), a Grade 7 learner at Dr Viljoen Primary School, said going on the tour would be a dream come true for her. “To me it would be the experience of a lifetime, to be a team player and part of a huge group of children with diverse cultures and hear our voices echoing through the cathedrals.” There are several people in her life who would like to see her succeed, starting with the European tour. One of them is Dr Viljoen Primary’s junior choir teacher, Lorna van Zyl, who said, “Bronwyn showed from a young age that she had a special talent for singing and a love of music. Her life revolves around music and singing is an important part of her life and, most importantly, she absolutely enjoys it.” “Bronwyn is such a blessing in our lives and she deserves to go on the tour. She is dedicated, diligent, sets goals and work tremendously hard to achieve them,” added her father, Desmond. Bronwyn has Monica de Lange, the chairperson of the ECCC, in her corner as well. “Bronwyn is a well-mannered girl and an integral member of the Eastern Cape Children’s Choir. “She has been a member of the choir for a year. It would be unfortunate if she could not go on the tour because of a lack of funding. “The choir comprises a diverse group of children and she fits in well with all. Her friendly personality makes her a popular member of our choir and this kind of behaviour is conducive to the positive development of the ECCC.” The Morton family needs the community’s help to get Bronwyn to Europe. tournament. A few well-known rugby players, such as Fabian Juries, Justin Peach, Curwin Bosch and Vleis Engelbrecht, have participated in previous tournaments. According to event organiser, Christo Botha from 1Touch, some of the teams that signed up for the touch rugby tournament seem very interesting. “A few of the interesting teams that signed up are the Benchwarmers, Drunken Idiots, Blitz Boys, Beer Pressure, George Wille Honne, Bal Grabbers, Whooha Tigers and Touch Masters.” The day promises to be filled with non-stop rugby excitement. Bay to enter festive spirit REPORTER PEOPLE with a passion for Christmas will be able to put their festive spirit and creativity on display when the annual Christmas in the Home market returns to the Nelson Mandela Bay next month. While more than 130 stallholders will once again exhibit their seasonal handicrafts and gift ideas, members of the public are also invited to enter a new competition for the most creative Christmas tree. In keeping with the handcrafted emphasis of the market, organiser Elsje Smuts said entrants would need to ensure that some elements of their trees were handmade. “The essence of Christmas in the Home is about unique, handcrafted items that you won’t find in any store. So, to be eligible, there must be a handmade element to the Christmas tree entries – either the tree itself or the decorations or both,” said Smuts. She said all entries will be put on display for

the duration of the market, which will be held in the Walmer Park Shopping Centre basement parking garage from December 1 to December 3. “Visitors will have the chance to vote for their favourite tree and the best entry will win R750 in cash.” Regular visitors can look forward to a new, more accessible venue and a number of previously unseen stalls, said Smuts. “This year we’ve worked hard to bring some fresh ideas and out-of-town stallholders to the PE public. Our aim is to create a wonderland experience as soon as you step through the doors and rekindle the childhood magic of Christmas.” Entry into the Christmas tree competition is free of charge. For entry details, email elsje@truebluecommunication.co.za or call 082 873 7663. Entries close on November 20 and trees must be delivered to the venue on November 29 and collected again on December 4. For more info visit the Christmas in the Home Facebook page.

(DON'T Lose Fiath, Give Prof Hope Try) Strongest Healer My name is Reuben, am 48 years old. Staying with my 2 daughters and 2 sons. For very long time there was no happiness in my life, even my wife left me because I couldn't support my own family. I had to look after my parents, both old, father 79 and mother 76. I was the only working in our family working as care giver. I struggled financially, my kids needed school uniforms, my parents needed help as well like basic needs as elderly. I visited different pastors, prophets and traditional healers but no one could help me, I wasted all the money but no results, I just keep losing the small I had. I was hopeless for many years until I read Testimony of Gabriel who was testifying the good work Prof Hope did to change his life by using Short boys to put money into his account IN JUST 30min. I made an appointment with him, as he explained to me all the options like Money Rats to put money in the house in same day, Short Boys to put money in your Account in same day, Magic Ring to Win Money games like Gambling, Casino, Lotto and Betting. Magic wallet to multiply your money. I choose Money Rats to put money in my house. He explained to me the process. I couldn't believe when I received the money in just same day, I immediately contacted him and paid her 25% and my sister choose Magic Ring for Lotto and we financially well all thanks Prof Hope. He also help with: Bring Back Lost Lover, Family Matters, Bring Back Stolen Goods, Bind your Property Male Enlargement. He also treats over the phone and deliver nationwide plus home visitors AROUND Eastern Cape.

Die man was baie gaaf. Skakel of whatsapp hom vir die beste lewe by 078 466 5511. ‘n Kans kom eenmaal in ‘n leeftyd. Probeer dit!! X1U2FYMR-PX011117

TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE

Freeforall at iconic Brazilian GP FOR all the innovation that Formula 1 continues to deliver, there are some things in the sport that, untouched by too much change, remain and embody the very essence of the sport. One such example is the Brazilian Grand Prix and the famed Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace. Decade after decade the Interlagos-based circuit has delivered on everything a Formula 1 race should be. Through the scorching temperatures and rain-soaked afternoons, the Brazilian fan’s euphoria for F1 has always been palpable. And it has, since 1973, delivered some of the most dramatic and memorable races in the history of the sport. There have been many highly emotional Brazilian Grand Prix throughout its history, but none more so than Ayrton Senna’s majestic 1991 win in the McLaren after which he was so physically exhausted that he had to be extricated from the cockpit. In the decades since, there’s been no let up on the drama with several of the most theatrical moments coming in the 21st century. In 2005 Fernando Alonso became, at the time, the youngest world champion and two years later, in 2007, Kimi Raikkonen won his world title in what had been, argu-

ably, one of the most fascinating championship battles of all time. A year later thousands of Brazilian hearts sank as Lewis Hamilton snatched the title from local favourite Felipe Massa, literally, on the last corner of the last lap whereas the 2012 Grand Prix marked the final race of the great Michael Schumacher’s storied career. The circuit, at roughly 4.3km, isn’t a long one and a lap time below 70 seconds is likely, especially for qualifying. Besides having the iconic, and tight, Senna S as turn one, its three sectors stand in contrast to each other. A straight and several medium to highspeed corners dominate the first part of the lap, while the middle sector is the more technical section before it’s capped by Junção, the final climb up the hill to the start/ finish straight. Despite not having a Brazilian world champion since Ayrton Senna, the fans have shown a fanaticism for the sport and especially other Brazilian drivers as fervent as you’re likely to see anywhere in the world. One driver responsible for inspiring said passion is Felipe Massa. The Williams driver has announced his retirement at the end of the 2017 season, making this weekend his final Brazilian

Grand Prix. Though never a world champion, Massa has inspired countless fans, colleagues, and contemporaries with his incredible talent, generosity, passion and sportsmanship. Obrigado Felipe. The fact that most positions in both the drivers’ and constructors’ championships have been settled just adds a further element to this weekend’s Brazilian Grand Prix. No longer do teams such as Force India have to impose team orders on Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon. Now, they’ll be free to race and bang wheels to their hearts’ content and this directive, pretty much, goes for everyone up and down the pitlane too. While the forecast predicts a dry race weekend, the weather for the Brazilian Grand Prix has always been, at best, uncertain. One thing that is a certainty, however, is that there has rarely been a dull Brazilian ICQC 2018-20 Grand Prix and it shouldn’t be any different this year.

Chiefs win Ntando Tours Premier League trophy SELBY MADIKANE FOLLOWING their outstanding performances, Major Chiefs finally lifted the Ntando Tours Premier League (Zwifa) trophy in victory on Friday, when they defeated all their opponents. Chiefs managed to maintain their unbeaten record until the end of the Ntando Tours Premier League season. Amakhosi played 13 league games in total, winning 12 and drawing only one game. The current league champions are the best side in the Zwifa league because they scored 59 goals and only conceded nine goals. Ultimately, the team in gold and black ended the season in the top spot with 37 league points. Amakhosi proved that they were the most unrivalled side in the Ntando Tours Premier League when they won the SAB Promotional Play-offs recently. Head coach Nkululeko Mayinje stated that his side worked very hard.

“Our paramount objective was to win the league and that has happened. I told our boys after each game that they should not be complacent. “The boys had followed our technical team instructions. This is a good record, but the road to success was not easy. I want to thank the club’s management team, our loyal supporters and our players for their cooperation,” said Mayinje. Chiefs’ skipper, Simamkele Pefile, stated that their sacrifice helped them to collect top honours. He said, “It was not easy for us to win the league title, but we sacrificed so much that we put the club’s interests in front. “We were not under pressure, but we told ourselves that we were aiming high for the club. “The previous games had a telling effect on us. Our success is attributed to discipline, determination and dedication. “I want to thank our executive committee members, our parents and our die-hard supporters for supporting us through thick and thin.”

PE EXPRESS | WEDNESDAY 8 NOVEMBER 2017

SELBY MADIKANE THE Mdantsane-based side, Tornado FC, gave Lion City a hiding when they beat them 3-1 in front of their home supporters during their ABC Motsepe League clash that was played at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium on Saturday. As expected, it was a fighting game from the beginning. The home side had numerous opportunities to score, but they failed to convert them into goals. Former Jomo Cosmos and Lion City player, Siyabonga Nontshinga, showed that he wanted to score against his former side, but Phumelele Msila and Xhantilomzi Mhlahlela managed to mark their former teammate until the end of the goalless first half. In the second half, the visiting side’s big strikers, Sydney Ntsoane and Nontshinga, gave City’s defenders a tough time.

City’s new kid on the block, Nkosikhona Nogwaru Simayile, was very effective in that Tornado’s right full back, Thabiso Mikaele, had problems marking him. Ntsoane went past Lion City’s left full back, Aphelele Vutuza, and sent a cross to Nontshinga, who scored the opening goal against his former goalkeeper, Lwando Nkohla. City’s Simayile quickly scored an equalising goal following a good pass from the substitute, Malizole Freedom Funani. Ntsoane continued to torment Vutuza and sent a cross to Senzo Ndlovu who headed home Tornado’s second goal. Tornado’s third goal came courtesy of Ntsoane to give his side a welldeserved 3-1 victory over their arch-rivals. City’s trio, Thozamile Magwala, Mnoneleli Zitho and Luxolo Tobi, were instrumental in the midfield, but their strikers were harmless in front of Tornado’s goalkeeper. In another game, Highbury accumulated three maximum league points after they demolished Try Again 3-1 at Gelvandale Stadium. ABC Motsepe League results:
