OURT orders obtained by a neighbour against two guesthouse owners in Summerstrand compelling them to demolish portions of their expensive properties have raised questions about the large number of other houses in the area that are also contravening their title deed restrictions.

According to the DA Ward Councillor, Dean Biddulph, there are in excess of 50 property owners in the area who have similarly contravened their own title deed restrictions and who may have built with municipality approved plans.

Marais Ellis of Equus Guesthouse in Sixth Avenue was ordered by the PE High Court to demolish because the restrictive conditions on the title deed were exceeded. Ellis constructed additions to his property after being granted approval to lift the restrictions by the municipality and Local Government MEC, Mlibo Qoboshiyane.

He was taken to court by abutting neigbours, Dr Philippus van Rensburg and his wife Wilma. In court it was argued that Ellis had built over the building lines contained in the original title deed for the erf when the suburb was originally declared.

In this case, both the metro, as well as Ellis, were taken to court.

The judge in the case ruled that a municipal zoning scheme can never override the specific conditions contained in the title deed document and that the metro was in fact remiss in not checking every building application for such compliance before approving any plans.

The other guesthouse owners, Perapanjakam and Persotam Naidoo of Access Guesthouse in Seventh Avenue, were also taken to court by the

Van Rensburgs. The Naidoos were ordered by the PE High Court to demolish a portion of their multimillion-rand guesthouse by February 20. The court made the decision on the basis of the property’s title deed.

The issue was postponed until a

full report has been submitted.

At this meeting ANC councillor Lawrence Troon asked the officials what criteria were used to impose restrictions.

He said it seems that approval for zoning is given on the basis of if you are liked or not. “You will find cases where two homeowners violate the same building regulations, but only one is ordered to demolish his house.”

Biddulph said the metro has tried to rectify this by embarking on a blanket application for the removal of the conflicting title deed restrictions but this has not got off the ground to date.

“I have been informed that the possibility exists for all offending owners to be issued with notices forcing them to apply for a removal of restrictions so that their buildings can become compliant,” said Biddulph.

“If I were to point a finger at any culprit, I regret that it would be at the metro who have allowed this practice to continue unchecked and have now created a situation where many unsuspecting owners may find themselves in a noncompliant position,” he said.

Biddulph said generally compliance inspections would only be conducted after a complaint.

There are many guesthouses which are 100% compliant in respect of both their buildings and their rates billings. “There are however also many property owners who evade the higher rates by operating a guesthouse or student accommodation without consent.

“I have requested on numerous occasions for the metro to conduct a full audit of all guesthouses to ensure compliance and to ensure that no properties fall through the revenue net as it is only fair that all should pay rates according to their use,” said Biddulph.

Wilma van Rensburg, the neighbour who has obtained the court orders, told the PE Express she did not want to comment when asked about how she felt about winning the two cases.

LUIDENS ’n verslag wat verlede Dinsdag aan die metro se komitee vir veiligheid en sekuriteit voorgelê is, het die direktoraat ’n begrotingstekort van R8 miljoen.

Die direktoraat se oortyduitgawes is R4,4 miljoen vir die 2012-’13-boekjaar en sy begroting hiervoor is slegs R2,3 miljoen. Die oortydrekening vir die vyf beamptes wat die uitvoerende burgemeester en sy adjunk beskerm, beloop R1,2 miljoen per jaar en plaas geweldige druk op die begroting vir oortyd.

Verkeersbeamptes het sowat twee weke gelede ’n kort staking by die Korsten-verkeersentrum gehou weens die wanbetaling

van oortydgeld.

Terwyl daar R56 000 begroot is vir toerusting soos knuppels en boeie, het die departement R264 000 nodig.

Die begroting is onvoldoende en die departement het ’n minimum van R880 000 nodig. Die meeste van die sekerheidsbeamptes het ses jaar gelede laas uniforms ontvang, lui die verslag. Baie van die beamptes dra nou gewone drag omdat hul uniforms stukkend is.

Die departement het ook R1,5 miljoen nodig vir petrol, maar daar is net R880 000 daarvoor begroot. Die komitee het ’n taakspan saamgestel om die metrobestuur om te haal vir ’n groter toedeling van geld.

Hamilton Totoyi, hoof van die verkeersdepartement, het verlede Dinsdag op ’n vergadering van die metro se komitee vir veiligheid en sekuriteit gesê die departement is tevrede met die voorgestelde veranderings.

Die afstand van die nuwe roete is dieselfde as die ou een, het hy gesê. Voor die nuwe roete

egter finale goedkeuring gekry het, kan dit nie bekend gemaak word nie.

Die roeteverandering volg op ’n versoek van die DA nadat die raadslid Gustav Rautenbach verlede jaar gesê het verbleikte padtekens en taxi’s wat sonder waarskuwing stop net waar hulle wil, dra daartoe by dat leerlingbestuurders hul bestuurtoetse druip.

Om dié rede het hy die komitee versoek om die toetssentrum van Korsten eerder na ’n “vriendeliker” omgewing te verskuif.

Totoyi het op verlede week se vergadering gesê die sentrum self kan nie verskuif word nie, omdat dit by die provinsiale verkeersdepartement geregistreer is, maar ’n nuwe roete kan ingestel word.

Die nuwe roete sal waarskynlik op die volgende komiteevergadering bekend gemaak word.

Increase in student numbers at NMMU New programmes include Dietetics degree

NMMU is the higher education institution of choice for more than 40 000 prospective first-years.

Applications and admissions to the university soared with close to 7 000 more applications received as at January 31 compared to those of a year ago.

According to NMMU spokesperson, Roslyn Baatjies, the university had a 6.7% increase in students being admitted as compared to 2012 - receiving 41 247 applications for 2013 as opposed to 33 733 the previous year.

A total of 6979 first-years were admitted this year compared to 6541 in

2012.

Leading the admissions growth is the Faculty of Business and Economics Sciences with 2 705 compared to 2380 last year; reflecting growth of 13.7%.This is followed by Health Sciences with 941 admissions compared to 684 in 2012.

The close to 7 000 first-years include those starting new programmes like the higher certificates in Pharmacy Support and Business Studies; the diploma in Chemical Processing and the four-year Dietetics degree.

According to Baatjies, NMMU is the first university in South Africa

to train pharmacy technical assistants and to offer a qualification in chemical processing.

The latter focuses on industrial processes that convert raw materials such as crude oil, natural gas, coal, and chemicals into a wide range of products.

“The new degree in dietetics will teach students how to cope with people who may be difficult to convince to change their lifestyles. The degree will form part of the courses on offer in the Faculty of Health Sciences under the new School of Lifestyle Sciences,” said Baatjies.

Students who successfully com-

plete the four-year BSc Dietetics degree will also qualify to register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. Students can still apply for this new course.

The Higher Certificate in Business Studies provides an alternative for students who do not qualify for direct admission to a diploma programme.

These students need only get an Admission Points Score of 22. The students will be given two years to complete the programme.

NMMU received about 180 applications for the Pharmacy support qualification. 96 were admitted as at January 11, 2013.

During the funeral of her fiancé Phillip Nel (34) and two young daughters, Mieke Nel (11 months) and Twané Potgieter (3 years), Esmaré’s child from a previous relationship, she was under heavy sedation in the Intensive Care Unit of Life St George’s Hospital.

They died in a head-on-collision on Monday, November 26, less than a week before their wedding day which was scheduled to take place on December 2.

HIV/Aids is a disease that, although preventable, is still ravaging the people of the metro. The average age in which South Africans die has decreased over the past years from 70 to 54 with males and 56 with females, of which HIV/Aids has played a major role in bringing about this decrease. I wish to share with you (people of Nelson Mandela Metro) some of the things that the Department of Health is doing in order to prevent the spread of HIV and manage it so that it does not kill you.

What is the department doing to prevent the spread of HIV • The Department of Health is providing education through television, radio, newspapers, billboards, street banners, posters & pamphlets, journals, awareness campaigns, debates & talk shows, etc.

• It is providing condoms, both male and female condoms free of charge.

• For HIV positive pregnant women the department is providing among others, Prevention of Mother To Child Transmission services, to ensure that the baby is not infected by the mother.

What is the department doing to help people manage HIV in order to prevent Aids.

• The Department of Health is providing education through television, radio, newspapers, billboards, street banners, posters & pamphlets, journals, awareness campaigns, debates & talk shows, etc.

• Testing services are provided free of charge to test for HIV and blood for CD4 Count if tested positive.

• Nevarapine is provided free of charge to HIV positive women during labour to prevent child infection.

New vehicle for farm patrol TAVCOR Commercial Vehicles handed over a brand-new Amarok vehicle to members of Farm Comm, to be used to patrol their area day and night for one year.

Farm Comm is a community Visible Policing Forum serving the farming and rural residents of Maitlands, Colleen Glen, Draaifontein, Kragga Kamma, Little Chelsea and Lakeside.

Farm Comm members assist with security,

medical and fire-fighting support in times of emergency, to all residents in the coverage area.

The Amarok vehicle is fitted with a Tracker System, GPS, Video Cam, and a two-way VHF radio connected via their own repeater system to 180 Farm Comm Families who all have their own VHF hand-held radio.

The vehicle has a fire unit on the load body and a First Aid kit available for any emergencies.

Golden hearts reach out to needy ZELDRÉ SWANEPOEL WHAT started out as a Facebook page with only six members just seven months ago, has grown into a registered charity organisation and over 1 000 members on their page.

Nicki and Brendon Swanepoel from Charlo started the Mensies met Goue Hartjies (translated as People with Golden Hearts) page on Facebook to assist families in financial and spiritual need.

“We have come a long way, and have also been through tough times, so one morning I prayed and asked the Lord what it is He wants us to do.

I then received the message that we should help others. I told Brendon and he agreed immediately, and so Mensies Met Goue Hartjies came about,” said Nicki.

The couple, who are devout Christians and both share an enormous passion for children and people in general, started by giving motivational talks to people who were down and out.

Brendon explained that their Facebook page works in such a way that people in need can appeal for help, and people can also donate things such as clothing, food, and even furniture to be given to those in need.

The Swanepoels help people as far as

Kirkwood, Uitenhage, Despatch, and Jeffrey’s Bay. “We are not an organisation that ask for money for what we do. We receive donations of clothing and other things, but we do not go knocking on people’s doors for money. It is something we feel very strongly about,” said Brendon.

They do, however, need cash for petrol costs, and to raise funds for that they have printed a recipe book which they are selling at R75. “We have had to purchase a printer which we also still have to pay off, so every cent we make with our recipe book will go towards printing our recipe books and for petrol.” They design, type, print, and bind the books themselves.

Mensies Met Goue Hartjies currently work from their home garage, which is filled with black bags full of clothing which were donated to them to hand out. They currently use their little family car to transport the goods; even furniture such as beds, go on the roof of the little car.

The organisation is a family affair, and their three children, Tatalia (10), Joshua (5) and Noah (2) are also involved in the work their parents do.

“We feel it is important for our kids to learn from a young age what the reality is of people out there who don’t have any food to eat, or beds to sleep on. And who better to learn from than their parents that one

It is not always easy to be exposed to severe poverty and destitution, so they regulate what their kids are exposed to. “Sometimes it’s even hard for ourselves as adults to see how people are struggling, but God has made us strong to handle these dire situations, and we always leave with a prayer,” said Nicki.

Call Kay for gardening help Programme for youngsters too BETTIE GILIOMEE MOST people love a beautiful garden but few have green fingers or know-how to create and maintain this themselves. Help is now, however, only a phone call away.

“Call Kay”, a direct telephone line for help with all things relating to gardening, was launched on Friday, February 1 at Floradale Nursery.

The idea was born when a wholesale nursery outside Port Elizabeth realized there was a desperate call from the public in South Africa for

gardening information and help.

“We are passionate about getting the public to start gardening and we have endeavoured to promote gardening in and around South Africa,” said Angie Carter from the wholesale nursery.

With this in mind, the “Call Kay” campaign was born. It is operational 7 days a week and during office hours, so that the general public can call someone and get an answer to any gardening question.

The person on the other side of the line is Kay Jones, who has worked in the green industry for 37 years of which 26 years were in and around

the Port Elizabeth area.

She has become known among the nursery office staff and clients as an “encyclopaedia of knowledge”, being able to comment on anything from the name of a new plant to the perfect feed mix needed for soil.

To get young people also enhusiastic about gardening, Elands Nursery has also started a school programme for children from Grades 3 - 5 offering them the opportunity to visit a wholesale plant nursery.

As part of the programme, pupils spend a morning at the nursery.

They are taken on a tour of the nursery, shown how a plant is propagated

Special attention is given to discussing planting media, roots, stems and leaves and how to plant a seed or cutting, as well as the importance of water, air, food and sunlight to plants.

There is no charge for the outing and the children can take a packed lunch along to enjoy afterwards.

The nursery is, however, not able to provide transport.

Auditions held for ‘Sounds of South End’ The Port Elizabeth Gilbert and Sullivan Society will this year present another truly South African production, telling a story that will resonate deeply with Port Elizabeth residents who remember the thriving, cosmopolitan community that was South End before the forced removals and bring that troubled period to life for younger audiences.

Sounds of South End has been written by local writer, actor and director, Herbie Clayton. This stirring drama with music tells the story of the Dietrich family, who have been served with a notice to vacate their home in South End and move to the Northern Areas.

Audiences will share their journey as they deal with the pain of leaving the only home they have ever known, the loss of their community, and the injustice of Apartheid laws regarding mixed marriage.

Sounds of South End opens at the Savoy Theatre, Adcockvale in May 2013

and will also feature at the Northern Area Arts Festival in September.

Open auditions for the show will be held on Friday, February 8 and Saturday, February 9 at the Savoy Theatre on Diaz Road.

Singing auditions for the lead roles will be held on the Friday evening from 6pm and everyone else who would like to be part of the cast should come on Saturday at 1pm for a movement audition and readings.

No experience is necessary and they hope that plenty of energetic newcomers of all ages and backgrounds will come along and enjoy a relaxed and supportive audition process.

Gilbert and Sullivan cabaret for Valentine’s The Port Elizabeth Gilbert and Sullivan Society’s Valentine’s Cabaret is now in its 5th year and audiences are in for a treat with a sparkling cast, beautiful dancers and some fabulous songs from the stage, the charts and yesteryear.

The Valentine’s Cabaret runs from Thursday 14th to Saturday 16th February at 7.30pm in the Savoy Theatre.

This year’s cast includes Paul Leonard, Richard Campbell, Melissa Leander, Ann Yates, Mark Farrow, Arthur Daniels, Rose Cowpar, Jody Butler and Emily Bradley, to mention a few.

They will be performing hits from Elvis, Luther Vandross, Josh

Groban, Peggy Lee, Christina Aguilera, Love Never Dies, Showboat and some foot tapping group numbers.

The show starts at 7.30pm in the Savoy Theatre. Tickets are R65 or R500 for a table of 8. Guests can bring along picnic baskets.

Salute to Rodriguez at Old Grey IN the wake of a massive resurgence of interest in the folk icon Rodriguez created by the Oscarnominated documentary “Searching for Sugarman”, Centrestage presents its own twonight only salute to Rodriguez at Old Grey this weekend on 8th and 9th February.

“Finding Sugarman” is headed up by Wayne Kallis, along with a new-look line-up which introduces drummer Devon Van Rooyen and bassist Andrew Warneke to the Centrestage fold and reacquaints fans with percussionist John Dickin in the 6-man ensemble.

Despite being completely unknown in his home country, the music of Mexican-American Rodriguez was extremely popular in South Africa in the 70’s and 80’s as its poetic, anti-establishment lyrics, which touched a chord with the troubled youth, came to serve as antiApartheid anthems.

In 1969, many believed that his initial album Cold Fact would secure his reputation as one of the greatest recording artists of his genera-

tion.

Instead the album bombed and the Rodriguez seemingly disappeared into obscurity, even being subject to rumours that he had committed suicide by setting himself on fire onstage and other imaginative tales.

The album took on a life of its own when a bootleg recording found its way into our own South Africa. Banned by the Apartheid government, the album became a nationwide phenomenon over the next two decades, and the soundtrack to a resistance movement of liberal African youth.

The Searching for Sugarman documentary tells the story of two South Africans who set out in the 1990s to find out the truth behind this elusive and shadowy legend. In doing so, they uncovered the humble construction worker who had no idea he was a superstar!

Once contact was re-established for the first time, subsequent tours to South Africa in 1998 and 2003 were arranged and Centrestage had the rare privilege of staging the sold-out concert in Port Elizabeth themselves.

The fact that the neighbour has stated that he will not be paying the vet bills, and knowing that gin traps are illegal, only after the fact, does not give him the right to get off lightly.

In the hypothetical case of a child being badly injured, no-one would think twice about this neighbour having to cough up the money for the surgical fee. Hence, this neighbour should still be made to pay for the terrible injuries that Bailey has sustained, losing a limb.

Problems with vagrants in Newton Park and Central . I have been living in Central for many years. The paving, concrete balls and restoring buildings will never get rid of the drug dealers, prostitutes and criminals.

Then you have the drunks that urinate and break bottles. So until something gets done about these people you can forget about Central changing.

Newton Park count your self lucky. You do not have prostitutes standing in front of your house waiting and performing for their clients and this is day and all night The drug dealers do very good business with no problems.

I can write a book of all my experiences.We are hoping to sell our property and buy in Newton Park.

NMMU’s electric racing car qualifies for German competition GT is a giant leap forward from DibaOne, and includes brandnew technologies, such as 100KW, 450Nm Brushless-DC electric motor powered by Lithium Polymer batteries, targeting a 0 to 100 km/ h acceleration of under 4.7 seconds.

He said another new development is a unique aerodynamic package incorporating front and rear wings, and a Formula One style under-body diffuser to increase cornering down-force.

“We plan testing DibaTwo within the next two months,” said Stroud. The vehicle is being made from scratch by a highly-motivated team of mechanical and electrical engineering students, supported by some business and marketing students.

To enter the prestigious competition, teams from around the world undergo a rigorous online registration process consisting of a quiz that challenges both the team’s technical knowledge, and understanding of competition rules.

Builders’ Warehouse supports CANSA

PE EXPRESS REPORTER BUILDERS’ Warehouse and Triangle Sports Club were able to give back to the community thanks to the support from runners in the annual Builders’ Warehouse Challenge.

An amount of R6 000 was handed over to The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) representative Joan Duarte.

“We are so grateful for the help, and the financial commitment will go directly towards patient care,” said Duarte.

The Branch Manager of Builders’

Warehouse, Chris Carthew, said they decided to support CANSA this year as the beneficiary because it’s close to home.

“So many people are affected by cancer and our Port Elizabeth branch had lost a valued employee, Anton Lindeque, recently,” said Carthew.

NMMU Racing has reached another milestone. Their new green technology vehicle has secured entry into the prestigious 2013 Formula Student Electric competition.

The university’s DibaTwo GT was first to qualify for entry into the German Formula Student competition held annually in August at the Hockenheim Formula One circuit.

“Over 100 teams competed for only 40 positions and NMMU Racing made history once again by being the first South African team to gain entry into this alternativeenergy racing formula,” said NMMU Mechanical Engineering lecturer and Formula Student Project manager, Trevor Stroud.

In 2011 NMMU also made history when DibaOne competed in the combustion sector of the international event as the first team from Africa to do so.

There’s every reason to be proud!

EVEN in the wake of Bafana Bafana’s elimination from the Afcon Cup by Mali let’s be proud to be South African. After all, if we weren’t the hosts we wouldn’t even have been there. Reaching the quarter-finals was no mean achievement.

The two hours of play for a 1-1 draw was in itself a fine achievement. Bafana had run themselves ragged. They just had nothing left in the tank for the penalty shootout – losing this crucial elimination stage 3-1. Let’s admit, too, all but one were poor kicks!

But let nothing dent our pride, even amid the face of continuous allegations of fraud and corruption. Yes, even “Nkandhlagate”. Let’s think of the good things, the good times; of the pride that our sportsmen and others in the public domain, such as self-made billionaire Patrice Mosepe’s pledging of at least half the funds generated by family assets (valued at R24 bn), to improve the lives of fellow-South Africans less fortunate.

Lotus E21

As the first car to break cover, Lotus’s E21 is visually very similar to its predecessor but technical director James Allison said that certain aspects of the car had been heavily revised, in some cases re-designed.

The front and rear suspension layouts have undergone a substantial transfor-

mation in order to encourage better aerodynamic performance. The rear wing complex will feature the passive DRS system that the team had evaluated through most of the 2012 season.

The “vanity panel” which teams are allowed to use to cover the step nose was nowhere in sight of the E21. Allison said it hasn’t been done yet because the cosmetic panel would weigh a few grams “and with a Formula 1 car, putting a few grams on that you don’t need to is anathema to us.”

Sauber C32

If looks were all that counted the stunning graphite-laden livery and sleek lines of the C32 would be a force to be reckoned with. But it regrettably isn’t the case; instead whether it will translate into some menacing pace on the track remains to be seen. The designers have opted for a very tightly packaged car with particularly the sidepod area suggesting that the focus is on cutting down drag resistance. The step nose, while still prevalent, is cleverly disguised with two ‘rails’ on either side.

In stark contrast to most teams, Force India has chosen a complete re-design for 2013. Designer Andrew Green revealed that the focus was on optimising the 2013 Pirelli tyres, hence the specific attention to detail.

One notable absentee from the presentation

was a second driver. Nico Hulkenberg’s departure to Sauber has left the team having to scramble for a replacement. Likely contenders include Heikki Kovalainen and Vitaly Petrov.

Ferrari F138

Ferrari described its car as an evolution of the 2012 model. Designed in Toyota’s Cologne wind tunnel, this year’s car is called the F138, so named for the year and as homage to the last of V8 engines. Along with a redesigned exhaust layout, the sidepod and cockpit air intakes have also been modified to enhance aerodynamics.

The step nose has been put aside for a more bulky front-end and overall design which teamboss Stefano Domencialli hopes will help the team hit the ground running in Australia.

Red Bull RB9

Unveiled on February 4 in a dimly lit warehouse, the media in attendance were categorically restricted from snapping the new RB9.

One or two sneaky shots were, however, taken and from it could be deduced that Adrian Newey has opted to retain the step nose design and forego the “vanity panel” in similar fashion to Lotus.

The only aspect able to be judged at this point is aesthetics; and from the six cars launched it’s hard to pick a favourite. This may be due to sheer relief that F1 cars seem, finally, to be beautiful again.

Top swimmers prepare for River Mile EASTERN Province’s top swimmers are getting ready to tackle the 89th SPAR River Mile on Sunday 24th February at Sundays River.

Traditionally one of the most social and wellsupported swimming events on the local calendar, the River Mile attracts swimmers from around the country. Whilst open water swimming continues to be on the increase in South Africa, it’s often the PE-based pool swimmers that surprise at the River Mile with some really fantastic results despite not competing regularly on the open water scene.

Whilst Olympic swimmers Troyden Prinsloo (Durban) and Jessica Roux won the two feature events and Paralympic champion Kevin Paul the disabled race, it was pool swimmers like Jessica Liss, Christopher Reid, Thomas Hansford, Andrew Fisher and Megan van Wyk who surprised last year and could pull off a victory in 2013.

It being a tide-assisted swim in the Sundays River, the mile is certainly a lot easier than a 1 600m pool swim and is favoured by the middle distance sprinters as winning times posted are often around the 12 minute mark. Whilst last year was won by the two South African 2012 London Olympic 10km marathon swimmers, this distance and race certainly isn’t ideal for them and they will have to fight hard to retain their titles this year. The River Mile has expanded into a full two- day festival of activites with Saturday’s programme featuring the Disabled Mile, Second Skins Wetsuit Mile and a family half mile. As is tradition, the Mile events are swum with men and ladies separated and the Family half-mile event gives families and partners the opportunity

to swim together. The Family half-mile is also a fundraiser for Rotary as part of their international swimarathon which sees swimmers around the world swimming on the same day to raise funds and awarness for Rotary’s bid to eradicate polio in the world.

A summer fair atmosphere with exhibitors, stalls and food vendors will also feature the Rotary Club of PE Sunrise’s Kids Zone and a Castle Lite Beer Garden, whilst artists like Centerstage’s Gino Fabbri keep the crowds entertained.

Entry into the festival area is just R20 for those 13 years and over and entry gives you a lucky draw ticket with a chance to win two return air tickets from Mango airlines.

Collection of registration packs for the pre-registered participants will take place at King’s Market, King’s Court Shopping Centre between 12 noon and 6pm on Wednesday 20th and Thursday 21st. Results of Secbands finale

The final round of the Secbands EPA Swim Challenge Series for 2012/13 took place on Sunday morning at Marina Martinique with Kevin Grey winning the 10km swim (2:45.59), Richden Jute (1:59.41) and Kirsten MacMillan (1:59.20) the 7.5km swim and Jessica Roux (1:03.30) and Kevin Paul (1:03.35) the 5km swim.

Paul Blake and Idelette Olivier won the 5km wetsuit category whilst Haydn Holmes made a surprise visit to the Series from Dubai to show that he still has what it takes, winning the 3km swim in just over 38 minutes from Christie

Vaughan.

In the 1km swim it was 13-year old Matthew Roux winning with Jade Grobbelaar taking the girls’ title. Clarendon Park’s Tristan Zoetmulder won the Kids bank-to-bank swim from Cradock’s Hendrey Smit and Luke Evans. Full results from the Secbands Series are available on www.ecswim.co.za

Tough Bell Buoy Challenge in March

The Nelson Mandela Bay Bell Buoy Challenge swim takes place on Saturday 30th March and has already attracted entries from around the country. Rated as the toughest Indian Ocean swim on the planet, the Bell Buoy swim was first done as a solo swim in 2009 by solo marathon swimmer Kyle Main before becoming a fully fledged race in 2010 and won by 10 times World Cup marathon & Olympic swimmer Petar Stoychev from Bulgaria with Australia’s Olympian Melissa Gorman taking the ladies’ title. At the time Gorman was the World 5km record holder.

2011 saw Slovenian swim ace Rok Kerin taking the title from Durban’s Luke Nisbet with Cape Town swimmer Dominique Dryding outsprinting Durban’s Nicole Brits to become the first South African ladies winner.

In 2012 South Africa got their first Men’s winner when SA Olympic swimmer Troy Prinsloo broke the course record and Dryding successfully defended her title in conditions which were near perfect. Paddlers who would like to assist with the water safety as seconds for the swimmers are encouraged to contact the organisers through the website.

With all SA’s bowlers (particularly Dale Steyn with a “sixer” this time) performing at a rate of high revs, Pakistan were then decimated: 49 all out in 29 overs. Heroes galore in the Proteas ranks!

Nelson Mandela Bay Table Tennis Union season commences THE 2013 season for the Nelson Mandela Bay Table Tennis Union commenced this week with Annual General Meeting on Monday, February 4.

The league will be played from Wednesday, February 20, until Wednesday, November 20 at the Malabar Community Centre.
