Pupil’s recycling design could save lives REPORTER

Theodor Herzl High School teenager’s ingenious idea to turn empty crisp packets into protective ‘space’ blankets will help keep the homeless warm and dry this winter and could even protect them from hypothermia. The school is running a drive to collect hundreds of empty large and small plastic chip packets, which are then carefully sliced open and patched together to form windproof, waterproof blankets that will retain body heat in the same way that emergency first aid blankets do. Grade 10 pupil Christie Vaughan (16) had the brainwave after a personal experience with hypothermia after she’d swum the Nelson Mandela Bay Bell Buoy Challenge in Algoa Bay last year. “After my swim I was disorientated and the paramedics wrapped me in a space blanket. Within minutes I was feeling so hot! I am passionate about charity and wanted to make a difference in some way. When I investigated the material that space blankets are made of, I realised that chip packets are made of very similar silver plastic foil. Instead of just throwing empty packets away, we could put them to good use and help people too!” she explained. A space blanket is a plastic insulating body wrapping which reflects back most of the body heat lost by radiation. It is carried by climbers and mountaineers in case of exposure, as well as by paramedics and other emergency rescue workers. Christie and her Theodor Herzl school friend Sonali Madhoo embarked on a drive to collect as many packets as possible, with recycling bins donated by Mpact Corrugated set up around the primary and high school

for pupils to deposit their packets into. The project has also been adopted as one of Theodor Herzl’s Eco Club’s chief outreach activities and will contribute to Theodor Herzl’s status as an environmentally aware ‘Green Flag’ school. The teens have also encouraged other schools to join the drive and plan to consult with local communities via the school’s partnerships with Walmer High School and the Nanaga Village near Colchester about the best way to distribute the blankets to the destitute once produced. “The more chip packets we collect, the fewer pile up in landfills and the more blankets we can make to benefit more people,” Christie said. Grootboom Hope Foundation offers hope where there’s none ZELDRÉ SWANEPOEL THE couple couldn’t sit back and watch how so many toddlers were roaming around the neighbourhood, unsupervised and hungry. This is the reason why Pastor David Grootboom and his wife Cynthia decided to do something about the children’s situation, and established the Grootboom Hope Foundation in Timothy Valley. In the year that they’ve been operating, they put up a container which doubles as creche for 60 children aged between 3 and 6 years, and a soup kitchen for the community. “We saw the need in the community and decided to start this out of our own pockets, to help the children and youth especially,” said Pastor Grootboom. The creche is open from 7am-4pm week days and the charge is a minimal fee of R30. “The main reason why the children were just walking around during the day is that their parents who are most-

ly dependent on grants, cannot afford the creches in the area. The AllPay grant is R220 and most creches charge a fee of R120 - an amount that these parents simply cannot afford,” explained Cynthia. The soup kitchen runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays and feeds around 300-500 people per week, according to the Grootbooms. The Grootboom Hope Foundation also runs youth empowerment programmes in conjunction with NAMA Annual, which include drug awareness, lifeskills programmes and computer literacy classes. The People Opposing Poverty in Society (POPS) Foundation became the first sponsor of the Grootboom Hope Foundation, and delivered the first batch of new blankets, clothing, toys, learning material and non-perishable food items recently. “We will be supporting the Grootboom Hope Foundation with regular donations as we receive them. It’s time for cats and dogs to reign THIS month the Animal Welfare Society (AWS) kicks off their “It’s time for cats and dogs to reign” campaign, which will stretch until the end of September this year. The campaign is organised by a team of Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University students in Public Relations who have adopted the AWS as part of their practical studies. The first event of this campaign will be an “Adopt Me” beach walk at Pollock beach on Saturday the 11th of May. Ten dogs from the Animal Welfare Society will be walked along the beach with bibs on reading: “Adopt Me”. Volunteers will be needed to help walk the dogs and those interested to volunteer can

A DIVERSE three-day programme called “Spotlight on The Stars” will serve as a pre-launch Mini Festival that will be staged at the Boardwalk, Vodacom Amphitheatre, from Friday, May 17 to Sunday, May 19, 2013. “The purpose is two-fold - to celebrate the 7th anniversary of the Northern Arts Festival in September and to showcase some of the musical masters of Nelson Mandela Bay. The Northern Arts Festival is putting a spotlight on some of the greatest master musicians this city currently has to offer,” explained Northern Arts Festival (NAF) director, Billy Paulson. “Since the establishment in 2007, the Northern Arts Festival had become a fixture on calendars not only in the Nelson Mandela Metro, but also across the Eastern Cape - art lovers across our country are beginning to notice it. The NAF is different from probably most similar events because it caters for and attracts such a varied fan base that reflects our rainbow community so perfectly,” Paulson said. A CD and DVD of the entire threeday programme will be compiled featuring the various artists and will be released and offered for purchase at the festival in September. The CD will be titled “Spotlight on the Stars” and will be released in volumes. The first NAF held in the Van Der Kemps Kloof in Bethelsdorp drew massive crowds and the most popular attraction at the festival was local musicians. “It is with this in mind that we intend bringing these stars under the spotlight by popular demand. Nelson Mandela Bay has produced some of the finest musicians and singers that this country has seen to date.”

THE South African National Blood Service recently praised the efforts and support received from Lorraine Primary School in Port Elizabeth for their outstanding results during their 7th annual Adopt-a-Month Blood Donation Challenge. Many records were broken by Lorraine Primary this year and they have taken the challenge to a new level. It was the most units ever collected as part of this challenge by the school with 454 people donating blood during March 2013. The winning class, Grade 3, under the leadership of Ms Maritza van der Westhuizen, achieved a 100% participation rate and 66

blood donations, the highest rate ever recorded since the inception of the campaign 9 years ago. Not surprisingly, the winning learner, Simon Swart, is also from Grade 3 and he managed to recruit 27 blood donors as part of this initiative. The support and commitment shown by primary school learners just illustrate that anyone can make a difference, because although the minimum age for donating blood is 16, these youngsters proved to have the power to rally support from their older brothers and sisters, as well as family members, to participate in such a life-saving cause.

From 8 to 11 May Victoria Park High School will be staging one of Disney’s longest running musical classics, “Beauty and the Beast”. A vibrant and talented cast of performers accompanied by the school’s very best musicians, is preparing to entertain audiences, young and old. Victoria Park High School holds in excess of 22 Showtime Awards that include, Best Show awards for the school’s previous productions of “District Six”, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat”, and “Copacabana”. “District Six” also earned the school the revered Box Office Hit of the Year award. The band, comprising of past and present pupils, will be conducted by musical director, Marlon Louis. Louis has a number of Showtime Awards to his name, and does a magical job bringing the familiar melodies to life within the musical. Mission holds Mother’s Day Breakfast Signs and Wonders Mission will hold their annual Mother’s Day Breakfast on Saturday, May 11, at The Admiral’s Buffet and Grill in 2nd Avenue, Walmer. These breakfast events have been a huge success for the Mission these past 8 years and are now one of their leading fundraising events. The Mission is a non-profitable organization based in the Northern Areas and their main objective is to practically assist the community. A team of dedicated staff and volunteers help the mission reach out to a community plagued by gangsterism, poverty and unemployment. They have holiday programmes, HIV/Aids counselling and awareness, spiritual counselling and food parcel hand-outs. Wheelchair Wednesday well on track WORKERS’ Day was celebrated in a positive way by 20 enthusiastic Spar staff members at the launch of the Spar Wheelchair Wednesday. As part of this 5-week campaign of the Association for Persons with Physical Disabilities (APD) Nelson Mandela Bay, the participants are challenged to spend 4 hours in a wheelchair. Having completed a series of tasks, they will provide report-backs to APD, who will use the information to bring about positive change for people who use wheelchairs. This initiative will result in an upswing regarding awareness and accessibility matters affecting people with disabilities. A total of 100 wheelchairs will be handed over to hand-picked needy recipients Participants pay R5 000 for the privilege of making a difference in a life. All funds raised will be channeled into the APD Job Creation Workshops in Paterson Road where 120 people with disabilities, who for various reasons cannot be placed into the open labour market, work. The first week’s participants in Wheelchair Wednesday had to endure four hours in temperatures hovering around 30 degrees. Participants reported back to the registration point to hand back their wheelchairs and swop stories. Some of the comments were: • Everything happened very slowly. • People are generally very nice to us • There was a car without a Disability Parking disk in the parking bay allocated for wheelchair users. • I felt that my dignity was invaded when people wanted to carry me where there was no ramp. • Generally the bigger shopping centres are very accessible. These types of comments are what have led to an increase in awareness regarding accessibility after the 2012 campaign, which

has been remarkable and with companies making changes accordingly. Companies have installed lifts and stair lifts. Retail stores and shopping centers have purchased wheelchairs from the APD Wheelchair Shop for elderly and mobility- impaired clients. The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium has ensured that a guarded fenced area is allocated to physically disabled sports fans and that the wheelchair area is marshalled by members of APD to ensure that appropriate attention is given to People with Disabilities. Tickets for Nelson Mandela Stadium Traditionally a person making use of a wheelchair would have to physically go to the stadium to buy a ticket. After a 3-year battle, and with the help of Access Management, the company managing the affairs of the stadium, APD have managed to have the system changed. With immediate effect, all tickets contolled by Access Management and channeled through Computicket, for all areas, can be purchased online. APD Nelson Mandela Bay thanks Buli G from Access Management for working tirelessly towards this outcome. New categories By popular demand two interesting categories have been created, i.e. Golfers’ Day and Bankers’ Day. The third Wednesday of May has been allocated to the golfing community. PE golfing legend Tich Moore has decided to put his “swing” behind this event and will be, together with his wife Jackie, ensuring that the PE golfing fraternity support this golfing first. Golfers will be encouraged to put aside the 4 hours from 10am to 2pm. They will participate in a driving competition while seated in a wheelchair. Brotherly love lost over late payments This week the Property Poser panel deals with a case of sibling rivalry between two brothers who co-own a property, in which the one lives. The reader, who resides elsewhere, appears to be having communication issues with his brother. He has discovered that his sibling has made arrangements regarding outstanding instalments and payments at the bank and municipality without his knowledge. The reader does not, however, mention whether the arrangements entered into have any direct financial consequences for him. The siblings are, from a legal perspective, partners in respect of the ownership of the house, said Stiaan Jonker of Smith Tabata Attorneys in Port Elizabeth. “The rights and obligations of the partners would, in the absence of alternative arrangements, be equal.” Jonker said one could assume that the sibling probably pays a rental to the reader for the use of his half-share of the property. “As far as the other obligations are concerned, payments should be made by the partnership.” It would appear that the partnership has fallen behind in some aspects, hence the arrangements, said Jonker. “Partners are jointly and severally liable for the debts of the partnership and one partner arranging to make payments isn’t problematic in itself. Assuming, of course, that he didn’t represent the other without consent.” Jonker said the partner making payments on behalf of the partnership has a right of recourse against the non-paying partner to

Wet women’s race attract record entries Strong winds, rain and biting cold failed to deter thousands of runners from descending on the Port Elizabeth beachfront for the 20th instalment of the annual SPAR Women’s Challenge on Saturday.

As the sun rose over the new race venue at Pollok beach in Summerstrand, a record 13 149 professional and amateur runners from around the Bay and South Africa gathered at the starting line of the 10km and 5km races. In the latter, many men donned wigs, skirts and other female attire to run alongside their better halves.

Zimbabwe’s Rutendo Nyahora, running for Nedbank AGN, took the 10km title in 33.09. She also won the Cape Town leg in March. Diana-Lebo Phalula from Maxed Elite CGA clocked 33:39 and Mapaseka Makhanya of Transnet ENG 34.06 to complete the podium. The top South African runners in the 10km SPAR Grand Prix series stand to win a total of R139 000 and a new car. The legs are in Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Durban (June), Pretoria (August) and Johannesburg (October). “The weather didn’t affect my run much,” Nyahora said at the post-race media conference. “I was aiming to better my personal best of 32.55, but that didn’t happen because of the wind. “This was the best race for me in PE. I’m not 100% in shape, but I was determined to make the top three.” Race organiser Colleen Muller of Walmer Athletics Club said the race route had changed because of renovations at the former starting point at Kings Beach. She said the new course, which led runners up Admiralty Way and down La Roche Drive, was tougher. Locals Gail Willimott and Jodie Bosch, who competed in the 10km for the third year in a row,

said the wind and rain had not been a deterrent. “We ran 52.53, which is our best,” said Willimott. “We ran into the wind up Admiralty, but it pushed us down La Roche.” Olwethu Bomvana, also from PE, said she suffered at the halfway mark, but managed to finish in 59 minutes. “I was hoping for a better time. At the start I was worried about the weather, but it turned out okay.” As runners crossed the finish line, they were welcomed by vocals from top SA singer Toya Delazy. Another celebrity who had scores of fans queuing for photographs was actor and comedian Colin Moss. Before firing the starter’s pistol, he said the chilly weather made him feel like he was back home in Cape Town. “I wish I had been running in this weather,” Moss said afterwards, adding he never tired of the hordes of fans eager for a word. The Association for the Physically Disabled received R200 000 from the proceeds of the event, while PE resident Lucinda Bergins won R50 000 in SPAR shopping vouchers. Lawson Brown High School and Papenkuil Primary School were the schools and St George’s Hospital the company with the most entries.

ONE of the most breathtaking events of the year takes place this weekend with the Woody Cape Offroad MTB and Trail Run Challenge in the Alexandria Forest area just outside Alexandria. Who will gain in Spain? IN the world of motorsport there is no shortage of Spanish sporting heroes. The current crop of Jorge Lorenzo, Dani Pedrosa and Marc Marques and their domination of MotoGP is testament to this. Spain may be smitten with MotoGP, but it was Fernando Alonso who transformed this country’s interest in Formula 1 from mild curiosity to full blown infatuation. In 2005 the then Renault driver, Alonso, whipped the crowd into a frenzy as he stepped out in his home region of Asturias as the country’s first F1 champion. He would repeat the feat in 2006 and tag to his double glory a career as one of the most respected and revered Formula 1 drivers of his generation. Tyre wear around the Barcelona circuit has been described as “challenging” and similar to what was seen in Bahrain. But after taking more than a little heat from several teams, Pirelli have changed their hard compound tyres in time for the Spanish GP. “This latest version of the hard compound is much closer to the 2012 tyre, with the aim of giving the teams more opportunity to run a wider range of strategies in combination with the other compounds, which remain unchanged,” Pirelli’s motorsport director Paul Hembery said. 50k Algoa Rally action THE Longmore Forests will come alive with motor sport rally action on the May 11, 2013, when national and local rally cars will take advantage of this event by competing in the second round of the 50k Algoa Rally Championship, particularly the Longmore Forest stages, starting at the Ocean Basket in Uitenhage at 9am with scrutineering and documentation. The first gravel stage will be run at Jagtvlakte for the benefit of the Uitenhage supporters, entering from the old power station road, then proceeding to the next few stages in the Longmore Forests from the Hankey turn off. National competitors and reigning SA Rally Champions, Mark Cronje and Robin Houghton, driving a Ford S200, are expected

to lead the field of 30 vehicles that will use this event as a pre-National test session. This will also include the Volkswagen Sasol Racing team of Enzo Kuun, Hergen Fekken and Henk Lategan, with Team Castrol Toyota Johnny Gemmel and Leeroy Poulter and navigators.
