PART from being a highlight on the Eastern Cape’s event calendar, the Baywest Port Elizabeth Airshow will be the proverbial wind beneath the wings of a number of charities which stand to benefit from this year’s event. According to airshow director and head of the MTR Smit Children’s Haven in Port Elizabeth, Dr Crystal Watson, numerous charities and initiatives will reap the benefits of the giving nature of thousands of aviation enthusiasts expected to flock to the airshow. “As in the past, proceeds of the airshow will be carefully distributed to not only benefit the MTR Smit Children’s Haven. We have a long-

standing tradition of assisting other charities in any way possible,” Watson said. Children’s charities, aviation development for under-privileged children and wildlife preservation initiatives are at the top of the beneficiary list this year. This year’s airshow will be hosted on the grounds of the South African Airforce (SAAF) Museum in Southdene, behind Forest Hill. According to airshow organising committee member, SAAF representative and curator of the SAAF Museum, Captain Mark Kelbrick, the change in venue opens up a world of possibilities to organisers and visitors alike. “The venue offers more parking as well as leisure areas and also affords airshow-goers easy access to the museum displays.” Renovations at the Museum are currently

According to Kelbrick, the line-up and vision for this year’s event may very well result in the show once again being selected as the best airshow in the country. “The PE airshow has won the coveted airshow of the year award twice and has been runner-up twice. An action expo, numerous stalls and exciting competitions will provide plenty of entertainment on the day, while Brian Emenis, world-renowned airshow commentator will keep visitors linked to the aviation action via live links from the pilots. According to a report in The Herald, Marine biologist Shirley Parker-Nance warned that the project could cause the tourism industry to crash, and see pollution on Bay beaches as well as lead to the International Blue Flag statuses being revoked.
IRONMAN SA organisers have added their voice to that of local businesses who are opposed to plans to develop a 6km fish farm anchored off Port Elizabeth’s popular Hobie Beach. They believe the fish farm poses a major threat as it will be a magnet for sharks, and a threat to marine life, eco tourism and investment in the Bay. IronmanSA has spearheaded an online petition as part of the campaign to stop the fish farm. “Our beaches have become an integral part

) I do agree. Houses that have been valued at a good price value before, would drop extremely. This happened to me and my husband as well, so I am speaking from experience. But then again, we all know we are fighting a losing battle. Government will build houses anywhere they feel. And at the end of the day, everyone needs a home and comfort, so we have to accept it and work together in our areas to uplift the standards; that way we will reap some benefits or that’s what I think, I hope, I feel...Eesh!
) Why build here where there are no bulk services? Was the purchase above board or were there some kickbacks involved? There are other locations where bulk services exist like next to the airport. Makes you think... ) Will the municipality pay us the loss in value of our main asset given their stupid decision to build low cost housing next to an upmarket suburb. Môrewag Primary School turns 70 LASHEIGH LUCAS MÔREWAG Primary celebrated 70 years last month on September 29 and learners along with staff members gathered to form the the letters MW and the number 70 on the school field. The school was established in 1944, with the first principal being Miss Potgieter. The school currently consists of 700 learners. The school started celebrating its 70th birthday by having a special ceremony con-
sisting of song and dance - showing off the school’s talent. The organisers also invited guests of honour - former teachers and pupils, who came to inspire learners with motivational talks. The teachers also joined the learners on stage with drama. The learners took part in a Fun Walk in and around the school and each learner received a special badge and cake. Exhibitions including art, books and antique items were held to display the school’s history and talent.

Centrestage presents ’Smells like Grunge’ at Old Grey REPORTER DIG out your old flannel check shirts and your Doc Martens because the heyday of 90’s grunge is coming back into fashion this week as Centrestage pays tribute to four icons of the famed Seattle sound at Old Grey on October 9 and 10. Entitled “Smells Like Grunge” and featuring the music of Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden and the Foo Fighters, the show is given voice by Centrestage frontman and long term fanatic Wayne Kallis. He will be joined by Hugo Kleinhans on guitar, Andrew Warneke on bass and Port Elizabeth’s very own Dave Grohl - Gino Fabbri on drums. Combining elements of classic rock, punk music and even metal, grunge gave a voice to the hopeless, misplaced youth of the early 90’s
who could find no anchor in the over-commercialized and insincere culture of the 80’s. The show draws extensively from the repertoire of Pearl Jam, which is the only band to survive grunge’s eventual implosion and continues as one of the most popular bands in the US still today. While many of these musicians are still performing to this day, this show will be a love letter to the music they made in the 90’s with songs such as Alive, Betterman, Elderly woman behind the counter in a small town, Smells like Teen Spirit, Lithium, Heart shaped box, Black hole sun, Monkeywrench, Everlong and many more. JB eventually fell prey to the much faster Red Bulls and brought the McLaren home in fifth. Although the 2009 champion is yet to nail down his seat for 2015 his display in this race underlined his class. The superstar that is Daniel Ricciardo once again lit up the race with several brilliant overtaking manoeuvres. The Aussie boldly overtook both Williams’s drivers in the Esses in indescribably difficult conditions. Of Williams there was regrettably not much to get excited about. Treacherous conditions at the Japanese Gp brought these drivers tremendous talents into sharp focus this weekend. The Grand Prix had been under threat of a typhoon for several days but the worst of it was always predicted for Sunday. The calculations proved spot on as the heavens opened a few hours before the start of the race. Streams of water across the track surface and poor visibility demanded a start behind the safety car but it was soon evident that even this precaution would not be enough. The race was red-flagged after two laps behind the safety car. Pole sitter Nico Rosberg was led into the pitlane for what would become a 25-minute delay. The safety car restart brought drama for Ferrari as Fernando Alonso was forced into retirement with an electronic problem. The resumption of racing brought with it the much anticipated battle between Rosberg and Hamilton. It was Hamilton, renowned for his

The mood amongst podium finishers, Hamilton, Rosberg and Vettel, was decidedly sombre after having learnt of Bianchi’s crash as it was for all motorsport fans. In a show of respect no champagne was sprayed on the podium. We get used to it when nothing happens and when something does happen we are surprised, understandably upset and looking to place blame where it seems to be most convenient. The truth is, and will remain, that hindsight is always 20/20. We want to blame the FIA for not starting the race earlier; we want to blame race control for not hanging out the red flag earlier or putting out a safety car; we’ll even speculate as to why Bianchi did not slow in the face of double waved yellow flags. Ultimately, this is a reminder that regardless of how well organised or how many contingencies are put in place there will occasionally be a situation that exposes the danger of Formula 1. So much so, that you wouldn’t have been blamed for thinking that they had already closed up shop and headed off to Russia. Sebastian Vettel, who announced that he would be leaving Red Bull at the end of the season, kept close quarters with his teammate but a late stop for fresh tyres dropped him to fourth. However, on count back, following the second and final red flag the future Ferrari driver was elevated to third. Sadly, the race was overshadowed by an accident for Marussia’s Jules Bianchi. The 25year-old went off at Turn seven on lap 43 and crashed heavily into a recovery vehicle which was in the process of removing the Sauber of Adrian Sutil who had crashed a lap earlier. The accident resulted in the second red flag and prompted race control to call the race result. The Frenchman was taken to the circuit medical centre and soon afterward transported to a nearby hospital. The official news, confirmed by the FIA, is that Bianchi suffered a severe head injury which has required surgery.

Great stuff at its very best! IT’S ONE of the oldest clichés in the book – but, yes, let it be said that last Saturday RUGBY, in big bold capitals, was the winner in a great weekend of sport. Of course, to South African devotees the Springboks’ 27-25 winning of their second round Rugby Championship match against New Zealand, was sheer bliss. But even All Blacks coach, Steve Hansen, however reluctantly, was forced to agree. Remember it was the Boks’ first defeat of New Zealand since August 2011. Even more remarkable it was the Kiwis’ first defeat in no fewer than 22 Tests after going down to England in November 2012.
Yes Hansen, an All Black himself, who took over the coaching in 2012 and has only been on the losing side twice, was man enough afterwards to say: “My heart tells me the Boks deserved it. Well done to them. It’s been long overdue. Losing sucks, but the right team won.” So Heyneke Meyer has finally broken his duck against the mighty New Zealanders – and what a victory it was, too. There can seldom have been many better matches at this level: a game that overflowed with thrills, skills of the highest order; sheer bravery and daring, too. And not forgetting its fairytale ending.
All week rumours had raged: would No 8 Duane Vermeulen, injured just the week before against Australia, be fit to play? Should he be allowed to play? Then not only does he play but with such brilliance and intensity that he’s named Man of the Match. Talk about fairytale endings, this match was packed with them! The Brothers Grimm couldn’t have done better. The Springboks youthful flyhalf twins continue to dish up surprises. Twenty-year-old Handre Pollard crashes through the fiercest defence to score not just one but two (27th and 29th minute) tries. Remember the Sinatra song “It’s Getting to be a Habit with Me”? You have to wonder at times, as the 22-year-old Patrick Lambie goes unobtrusively about his business whether it’s a favourite of his. It’s certainly fitting. At Newlands just a week earlier he takes over from Pollard with a second half cameo containing a dropgoal, a try and conversion to help
trounce Australian 28-10. This time in a lower key – though every bit as important – he nails a monster penalty to edge the Boks to as nailbiting 27-25 victory with little more than a minute to spare. If you watched closely, you no doubt saw the open-mouthed shout of triumph on the young gentleman’s usually inscrutable face. The column said last week and it bears repeating: these two young men have a lot more writing to do on the Springboks’ roll of honour. Full marks to coach Meyer for perfect timing of his replacement calls throughout this tense and testing encounter. He was spot-on. And when last did you see so much riveting stuff in the Currie Cup? Western Province’s 34-29 defeat of Free State Cheetahs; the Sharks squeaking home 26-23 against the Golden Lions. One small gripe: when an injury like that to Sharks centre Paul Jordaan is clearly serious, shouldn’t TV at least give the public the latest possible update from the changeroom?

Newcomers Leeds United clinch Promotion Cup game goal by Siyanda Manga. Callies fought back and Dillon Germshuys forced the game into extra time. Both sides were trying for dominance in extra time and Tulani Sipango sealed a 3-2 win for KwaDwesi deep into the 2nd half of extra time. The first Division final between PEFA newcomers Leeds United and St George’s Colts saw Leeds United was decided inside normal playing time. Colts had no answers for a dominant Leeds United who clinched the tie with a 5-1 win. The Premier League final between Callies and PE Defence was a close 1st half with Callies leading 2 - 1 at half time. For Callies Cleavon Draai and Kurt Petersen found the net in the first half. For Defence Ernest Thangeni pulled one back and with them still in the game. However Callies started dominating the second half which saw brothers Razaan and Imraan Safedien scoring Callies’ third and fourth goals respectively. Defence tried hard, but their poor final ball and lack of firepower up front saw Callies winning 4-1.
THE Westbourne Oval last Saturday was a hive of football activities where PEFA held its League Knock Out Cup finals. First game of the day at 1pm saw St George’s Knights and Old Grey locking horns in the second Division final. Kwakanya Mdlungu opened the scoring for the Knights about 8 minutes into the game. Old Grey reacted with attack after attack and with 12 minutes to go to half time Jody Hardiman got the equaliser. After half time both sides tried to get the winner and Nick Dewhurst got the winning goal for Old Grey to see them triumph 2-1. The Premier Reserve game between Callies and KwaDwesi Allstars was also a close affair with the game going into extra time. In the first half Cuan Ricks opened the scoring for Callies. About 10 minutes later Vuyo Mhlanga equalised for Kwadwesi from the penalty mark. In the second half KwaDwesi went 2-1 up from a field

Round 1 this Sunday morning is preceded with the ORS registration function at News Cafe (Boardwalk) this Friday evening from

Season 10 starts kicks off with Round 1 on Sunday morning at Hobie Beach. Madibaz athletics seasonopener this Saturday REPORTER THE Madibaz athletics club will host the first Eastern Province Athletics league meeting of the new season at the NMMU South Campus in Port Elizabeth on Saturday, October 11. More than 250 track and field athletes from schools, clubs and universities are expected to take part in the various age categories from under-15 to under-25 years. Older and master level athletes will compete in the latter age group. According to Madibaz athletics manager, Nellis Bothma, this will be one of the final opportunities for the public to see some of the institution’s top senior stars in action. All eyes will be on the likes of third-year student Garth Ellis, who took bronze in the high jump at the SA U23 and senior championships
with leaps of 2.05 and 2.10m respectively. Bothma said the EPA meet would be the first major local competition since NMMU hosted the high-profile Varsity Athletics series in March. The Madibaz will field a number of U23 national champions in their 50-strong squad, including Ischke Senekal (shot put and discus), Lionel Drury (hammer throw) and Jeannie van Dyk (polevault), as well as hammer throw specialists Magdaleen Louw and Mieke Stander, who won the U23 and junior titles respectively. The event starts at 9am at the Madibaz Stadium. Registration costs R20 and closes half an hour before the start of each event.
