Doctors to build private hospital

A
NEW private hospital which is owned by a group of Eastern Cape doctors, is currently under construction in Circular Drive. The hospital is scheduled to be operational by mid-year in 2016.
The hospital, currently named Fairview Hospital, is owned by a consortium of doctors from the Eastern Cape region and will have 220 beds for overnight patients. Dr Andries Marais of the Eye and Laser Institute, who is one of the 11 Port Elizabeth doctors who are building the Fairview Hospital, said they saw a need to build a private health facility in the area because of the commercial and property developments that are booming currently. “We saw an urgent need for more private care in the area. The hospital will at the moment be a general hospital but we will be looking at outsourcing special care doctors to specialise in the hospital at a later stage.” Dr Marais said the hospital construction had been funded by the doctors in the consortium, as well as private donors, and no funding solution was available at the moment from government or other commercial donors. Ward councillor for the area, DA Councillor Retief Odendaal, said they welcomed the new private hospital in the western suburbs as there weren’t any hospitals in the area.

Odendaal said although he was excited about the prospect of having a private health facility in the area, he was concerned about the poor level of road infrastructure which might hamper the development. “The area has poor roads. Even though the roads were widened by the municipality, the western areas are still riddled by roads that are in a bad condition and that could potentially damage this kind of devel-
opment.” Odendaal said he had warned the municipality of the need to provide better infrastructure in the area but with the financial crisis currently in the metro, he was not sure when the matter would be addressed. “The IDP budget has made provisions for road infrastructure in the western suburbs but we are dealing with financial constraints in the metro which make it difficult to have rapid and speedy development,” said Odendaal.

Shave your boss in Shear Madness for cancer REPORTER
CRACKERJACK Graphic design are hoping to make this year’s “Shave the boss” event, which is part of Shear Madness for Cancer, the biggest event in the country, asking PE residents to participate on November 30, at King’s Court Shopping Center. The aim is to raise more than R1 million for cancer awareness. Events Organiser, Simon Clark, said “If 2 900 people each raise R450 then we can raise the same in rands for Cansa and will make the event the biggest ever in the country which will be a real achievement for the Port Elizabeth. Clark said registration forms can be found at local at Superspars in Bluewater Bay, Despatch, Gelvandale, Levyvale, Mount Pleasant, Newton Park, Summerbreez, Sunridge, Waterfront as well as

NMBT hosted three groups of influential media who were exposed to various attractions, cultures and activities, who will speak directly to specific target markets.
The first visit was that of three Dutch journalists in the fashion and lifestyle category. They were Jurriaan Teulings, of Winq Magazine, Joost Brantjies of Het Parool, a daily national newspaper, and Yolijn van Dinten of the fashion and lifestyle magazine, Vogue. Due to the nature of their readers, these media visitors were exposed to culinary delights at Fusion in Stanley Street, and the luxurious lifestyle of the 5-star Pumba private Game Reserve, as well as the exquisite quality of Mohair products and a mill tour by Hinterveld Mohair. Popular SABC radio station Kwekwezi FM was hosted from the September 21 to 23. The representatives enjoyed a cultural township tour, Sunshine Saunter tour, Route 67, Nanaga Pies, and nightlife, as well as canopy tours and segways in Tsitsikamma. Canadian freelance journalist, Maram Siddiqi, for the National Post newspaper, was the honoured guest of NMB from the September 26 to 27. Maryam is on a sixmonth trip around the world writing stories about all the destinations she is visiting. Before she came to South Africa she was in New Zealand and Australia and from SA she is heading to Botswana and Kenya. Her visit mainly covered the experiences of a city tour, Route 67, Hinterveld Mohair Mill Tour, Bridge Street Brewery, SAMREC, Sunshine Saunter, and Stanley Street, as well as the Boardwalk Accommodation and Entertainment.

Local dog handlers take on the world ZELDRÉ SWANEPOEL TWO dog handlers from Port Elizabeth Heather Potter with her dog Kyba and Nanette Perold with Noodle - are the only ones from the Eastern Cape Province that made the South African squad to compete against the best in the world, at the 2013 FCI Agility World Championships this week. The South African team is one of eight countries taking part in the World Champi-
onships. Other countries are the USA, Austria, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Norway and the Czech Republic. The SA team has three teams comprising Large, Medium and Small dogs. Potter made the large team, which consists of four dogs, with her border collie Kyba, who is eight years old, plus the individual event, and Perold made the small team with her poodle Noodle, who is three years old. Potter and her coach Justus Truter and Perold with her coach Rory Shortland have
spent many hours in preparation training and confidence building for the event which takes place at the Coca Cola Dome from October 9-13. “The competition consists of two rounds, namely contact agility and non-contact agility. Over and above the fact that we will compete against the best in the world, we will do so in the Coca Cola dome on astro turf, which is an unknown surface for us and our dogs,” said Perold. The two coaches have many years of experience, with Justus Truter having represented South Africa from 2000 -2004, which in 2002 he came fifth overall with his border collie Sasha. And in 2004 his team won the gold, coming first in the team event – a first for South Africa. And in 2005 South Africa also came first again in the team event – the first country to win two years in succession. Rory Shortland had also qualified a few times for the team, but unfortunately could not travel to compete. This World Agility competition will be judged by an overseas judge, Harald Schjelderup from Norway, and Gawie Fauls from the Free State. Rory will be serving as an assistant judge.

Kiddies Party in aid of Isithembiso Babies’ Home WINDSOR Coffee Shop and Play Park will be hosting an exciting Kiddies’ Party on 19 October to raise funds for the Isithembiso Babies’ Home in Walmer. Isithembiso takes in abandoned, abused and neglected babies and rehabilitates them to reach their full potential in every way before ensuring they are adopted or fostered into loving homes. They are a registered NPO and as such rely on the generosity of companies and individuals to sponsor their cause in order to pay the monthly rent, utilities and staff salaries. Tickets for the Windsor party include admission to the Windsor play park for the day, coffee for Mom or Dad and a party pack and juice for the child. There will be tons of activities, including face
painters, clowns, candyfloss machines, etc. There will also be lucky draws, including pamper packages from Ebullience (situated at Windsor) that offers massages, waxing, facials and pedis and hand treatments for moms and dads. Tickets are R80 per child and can be purchased from Windsor, 43 Circular Drive, Charlo. There are limited tickets available. As an added bonus, parents may enter their child into the Windsor photo competition for R30 and stand a chance to win a year’s free entry for their child to the play park, as well as a birthday party valued at R500. St Francis Hospice play host to three musicians in a tribute show to the great “Satchmo” and friends on Sunday, 13 October, at 3pm at the PE Opera House. Musicians Richard Cock, Prince Lengoasa and Magdalene Minnaar will perform, along with the ECPO, blazing old classics from Jazz great, Louis Armstrong. Proceeds from this show will go towards the provision of homebased palliative care to Hospice patients in the metro and surrounds. St Francis Hospice Events Manager, Melanie Manson, said, “Louis Armstrong is probably one of America’s most iconic jazz musicians, with his unique singing style and trumpet playing. Who can forget his wonderful rendition of ‘Hello Dolly’ as Dolly descended those stairs in the film, or his singing of ‘What a wonderful world’ in that unique gravelly voice, let alone his jazz playing of ‘Kiss’ to build a dream on, ‘Blueberry Hill’ and ‘Basin Street Blues’? These are all captured by our own Lengoasa, who brings back those ‘Satchmo’ memories in his own way.” Lengoasa, is joined by Magdalene Minnaar, who adds another special touch with songs like The Rose and Don’t cry for me Argentina. Feast on culture this weekend LIZEKA TANDWA THE eleventh annual International Community Festival will be hosted at the Hellenic Community Hall in Conyngham Road at Parsons Hill on Sunday October 13. The Hellenic Community Hall secretary and event organiser, Maria Bekker, said they are expecting to have over 14 different cultures at the event. The public is invited to savour the cuisines, crafts and clothes of the different cultures of the world. “This is fun-filled family event for the community of PE. There will be a children’s corner, an eating contest, display of Alfa Romeo cars, food and product stalls for the families to enjoy,” said Bekker. The event will also have a soccer tournament as its main attraction with the different cultures gunning for the tournament cup. International Community Festival committee member, Kathy Zenios, said they were excited to host the event at the Greek Hellenic Community Hall. “This is an important event for the community. It is vital for people to maintain their cultures and this event allows the communities around the city a chance to celebrate themselves and also educate people about their culture.” The gates will be open to the public at 9am.

Reach for a Dream ‘25 years of Inspiring Hope’ THE journey of Reach For A Dream began 25 years ago after their founder, Owen Parnell, read an article on the Make-A-Wish foundation in Reader’s Digest. And the idea to inspire hope in children who are fighting a life threatening illness was born. The first dream, to ride on a pony and a motorcycle, was fulfilled on the 7th July 1988 for little JC Steinman; and since that first dream 25 years ago, Reach For A Dream has fulfilled over 12 000 dreams and touched the lives of over 30 000 children through their projects and outings. This year on Sunday 7th July, Reach For A Dream celebrated 25 years of making dreams come true for children fighting life-threatening illnesses. In this quarter of a century, no dream has ever been too big or too small and they believe that dreams have no limit. The impact of each dream fulfilled lingers and the Foundation strives to go beyond imagination to fulfil dreams and inspire hope in the hearts of these special children. “I am very excited for the year ahead as it is our 25th anniversary and we are very proud of this achievement. This would not have been possible without the dedicated and passionate effort from all our staff and volunteers and support from our Board of Directors. Bridge too far for Boks FRANKLY, IT was always going to be impossible. The mistake for the Springboks had already been made in the previous round against the Wallabies when, incomprehensibly, with the final minutes with that Rugby Championships match ticking away, it was decided to kick for poles instead of going for a bonus point try. It meant the Boks, despite a workmanlike win over the Aussies did not have quite enough petrol to be in the driver’s seat at Ellis Park last Saturday against an All Black side with the odds heavily stacked in their favour, win or lose. The Jo’burg scenario was a punter’s dream. The Kiwis’ options couldn’t have been more

clearcut. Simply winning would have been enough – even if by penalties alone. This would have handed them the Championship on a platter. The tournament rules being what they are, Richie McCaw’s team could lose the match but still take home the trophy if in defeat they managed to score the four tries that would have secured them the all powerful bonus point. Looking at it from skipper Jean de Villiers’ viewpoint, the only road to victory was made even more hazardous by highly explosive mines scattered almost every inch of the way. Not only would they need to win the match but would also have to deny their opponents a bonus point-fourth try.

Crazy Korea Delivers Brilliant Battles THE Korean Grand Prix is not well attended by fans; it’s situated in the middle of nowhere and its place on the F1 calendar is in doubt. Despite this, the Yeongam circuit was riddled with brilliant battles and delivered one of the most electrifying races of the season. Sebastian Vettel led away from yet another pole position but the Red Bull driver’s advantage wasn’t the dominantly supreme pace of two weeks ago in Singapore. He was, however, in complete control even with the moderate threat from Romain Grosjean. The Lotus driver had managed to get ahead of second-place starter Lewis Hamilton and make a slight impression on Vettel. Fernando Alonso, despondent about the Ferrari’s pace throughout the weekend, could not make much headway at the start of the race. In fact, the Spaniard was lucky to avoid being taken out by spinning teammate Felipe Massa. Alonso found himself tucked up behind the Sauber of Nico Hulkenberg and Kimi Raikkonen bearing down on his gearbox. Raikkonen was able to overtake his future teammate before the first round of pitstops commenced. Lewis Hamilton’s afternoon didn’t go to plan as tyre degradation severely limited the pace of the Mercedes. The Brit was on the radio sev-

The restart of the race had Kimi Raikkonen capitalising on a minute mistake by teammate Grosjean and the Finn snatched second place from the Frenchman who was not too pleased with the “situation.” Grosjean reportedly voiced his irritation on having been overtaken by Raikkonen and according to the teamboss Eric Boullier, “He was begging some team orders to let him past.” Grosjean was not able to retake the position with fresher tyres nor was it handed to him by the team. He was told by Lotus’ Director of Trackside Operations, Alan Permane, “We’ll talk about this later, but big ******* smile on the podium, big smile on the podium.” Permane went on to praise Grosjean’s “incredibly strong driving” and Raikkonen’s “luck.” The race was just about settled down when Adrian Sutil’s spinning Force India smacked into the side of Mark Webber’s Red Bull on lap 38. Webber’s car caught fire and with slow responding marshals erupted into quite a blaze. It later emerged that the fire was caused by a burst oil radiator. The drama intensified as a fire vehicle took to the track ahead of the leaders; prompting the second appearance of the safety car.

Mercedes’ strategy calling from the wall left a lot to be desired in this race. The first of two safety cars was deployed on lap 31 as McLaren’s Sergio Perez suffered a complete delamination of his front-right tyre. A stint of twenty-plus laps and a severe flat spot were the perfect reasons given by Pirelli for Perez throwing the tread off the tyre. Mark Webber was a casualty of the debris from the McLaren and was forced into the pitlane with a slow puncture. Webber commented after the race that Pirelli’s official reason for the failure may not be spot on. “The reason drivers are locking up [the tyres] is there’s no tread left [on the tyre].” The deployment of the safety car resulted in a rash of pitstops. The Mercedes team escaped their bad strategy call with Hamilton and al-

The FIA said after the race that they had called for the fire vehicle but expected it to come from the Turn 3 marshalling post and not Turn 1. As the race resumed Vettel was able to move clear of Raikkonen and win the race by four seconds. And while Romain Grosjean complained about not being let through Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg, drove the race of his life to hold off Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso. Hulkenberg withstood immense pressure from Hamilton lap after lap and undoubtedly boosted his shares in driver market. The difference between Grosjean and Hulkenberg is subtle. Although the Frenchman has matured as a driver it’s Hulkenberg who showed that he is a true racer. These two could be an interesting match-up if the rumours of Hulkenberg to Lotus in 2014 have any authenticity. Several fights throughout the field spiced up the Korean GP enough to declare it a thoroughly entertaining race. Sebastian Vettel, however, was completely oblivious of the majority of it. Calm and controlled at the head of the race the German delivered yet another faultless drive and the rest as they say is record-breaking history.

Rally action aplenty at Fountains Mall REPORTER APART from car rally action, the Fountains Mall 50K Challenge rally on Saturday, October 12, will also feature an interschool Superquick Trolley race around part of the same special stage as the rally cars. This is an Algoa Rally Club initiative to introduce youngsters to Rally Motor Sport and give something back to the community which supports this annual event in Jeffrey’s Bay. During the Superquick Trolley race, school children will push decorated Pick n Pay sponsored trolleys and Heine Sport has sponsored R5 000 as a donation to the school with the most entries. There are also prizes on offer for different categories and grades The fastest trolley competitor monitored by the timing system will also be given an opportunity to do a few laps in the navigator’s seat of one of the winning cars around the Fountains Mall Stage. For the cars, documentation and scrutineering will take place from 8am and the first car will enter the special stage around 10am in the parking area. Spectators can view the cars in action around this tar stage, which will be challenging for drivers and navigators and stage times will be broadcasted after each car finishes the stage. The rally cars will enter the service park for tyre changes and then move on to the next gravel stage at Smithtown (Kabeljouws) to Zuurbron on the Humansdorp/Hanky Road. The next

stage will start at Loerie and is called the DKP Spares stage (22km). The cars will return to Fountains Mall for a 45-minute lunch time service and do another stage before and after lunch around the parking area, then move on to repeat the morning stages with an additional gravel stage at Spekboom Lapa in Melon. This stage is worth watching from the Lapa, which has a view of the cars at speed with mountainous terrain and water splash. This is the penultimate round of the 50K Challenge, which has a R50 000 prize on offer for the winning team and this does not necessarily apply to the fastest or most expensive rally car. The current leaders are Jacques Louw and Gabriel Groener in a 1400cc VW Citi Golf by scoring the most points in their S1 Class, followed closely by Rikus Schmidt and Stefano Pieterse driving a S3 VW Golf 2l. Many of the competitors are female and will challenge the guys for the sought-after Gabriel Jewellers Watches prize of the day. The rally will end at the mall with the interschool prize giving, followed by the rally prize giving at the Ocean Basket. For more information on the rally, visit www.algoarallyclub.co.za. The next stock car racing will take place on 12 October at Victory Raceway, Victoria Drive in Walmer. This will be an EP vs SWD challenge. Gates open at 3pm and racing starts at 6pm. Classes competing are Beginners, Development, 1660’s, 2.1 Modifieds, Standards, Super Sixes and American Saloons. Admission is adults (R50) and track parking (R20).
