Two new Bingo halls approved for Port Elizabeth THE Eastern Cape Gambling and Betting Board (ECGBB) has given the green light for the operation of two Bingo halls in Port Elizabeth.

One will be operated in Moffett on Main by Galaxy Bingo while the other will be in Cleary Park under the management of Ritz Bingo.

This forms part of six licences granted to operate Bingo halls in various towns in the Eastern Cape. Bingo halls have also been approved for East London, Jeffreys Bay and Mthatha.

Once operational, 1 per cent of the Bingo halls’ gross gaming revenue will have to be directed towards socio-economic development initiatives for the duration of the licence period.

The newly-appointed Bingo operators will now be required to establish a Bingo hall of up to 300 gaming seats, with accompanying dining, child minding and parking facilities.

They also need to do project infrastructure investments of no less than R5 million per Bingo hall - excluding the cost of equipment - which

will have benefits for the local economy.

“Now that the successful operators have been announced, work on the ground can commence immediately,” said Mabutho Zwane, CEO of ECGBB, in a statement.

He said he is satisfied that the approved applications meet the stringent requirements set at the outset of the application process.

“We are impressed with the standard of the applicants that we have awarded, and wish all the newly-appointed operators all the best in their new business ventures.

“We look forward to building the business and tourism capacity of our province, and of the gaming industry,” said Zwane.

According to the final Request For Proposal (issued in 2012) applicants had to show that they have the ability to properly manage a Bingo hall, but also that they have access to the necessary experience and expertise in the industry.

Furthermore, they had to show how they plan to develop their surrounding communities.

THE South African Police Service of Port Elizabeth have made an urgent appeal to all citizens of the Nelson Mandela Metro not to abuse the 10111 telephone line.

The SAPS 10111 Centre based in Port Elizabeth has indicated that as much as half of all the calls received are not calls due to complaints or urgent assistance needed.

From the past financial year, of the more than 360 000 calls answered, approximately 180 000 calls were complaints received, while the balance of approximately 180 000 calls were abusive or hoax calls.

This effectively means that half of the time people are keeping the call takers at the 10111 Centre busy with abusive or

hoax calls, while complainants phoning the South African Police Service for urgent assistance have to wait half of the time to be heard. To further increase this problem, hoax calls draw the emergency response teams and vehicles away from real serious crimes.

With the current school holidays in mind, and also realizing that many of these abusive and hoax calls originate by our youth, the South African Police Service wants to plead with parents of school children to educate their children not to phone the 10111 line as part of jokes or hoaxes, but instead that this 10111 line is the very life line that is put in place to save their lives.

ONE month after the successful opening of Something Good’s take away and ice cream parlour, the much-anticipated restaurant, which includes a bar and outdoor deck is now open.

After years of being Port Elizabeth’s most notorious eyesore, the new Something Good has been overhauled with the new design and layout creating a relaxed and “beachy” atmosphere.

The first month of trade has seen many locals pour in to give their support. “We always knew that we’d draw a huge amount of interest from PE folk at opening, but to say we have been blown away by the support and positive feedback is an understatement!” says Grant Davies of Shimda, the project developers.

“For those of us who’ve grown up and lived in Port Elizabeth for most of our lives, Something Good is an institution – it’s been part of

our lives for as long as we can remember.

“I remember being a nipper at Summerstrand Lifesaving Club and every Sunday coming to the Roadhouse to get a burger and chips,” Grant explained. “It brings back many memories and I think it’s done the same for many others too.”

The super-sized menu caters for all tastes, and includes a selection of vegetarian options too.

Martin Rentzke, who operates the kitchen, explains, talks about the menu, “Customers really are spoilt for choice. The large burgers and footlong hot dogs have indeed been a hit so far “Our most popular burger has been the Pollock burger with melted mozzarella, bacon and avo. And to give the menu that extra local flavour, we’ve named all our pizzas after local surfing spots, which seems to have been well-received by our surfing buddies!”

Considering the safety of customers and staff is an important aspect. Grant explains, “The safety of our customers and staff is important to us. We have been working closely with the municipality to ensure that all the car park and walkway lights are in working order and provide sufficient lighting in the area.

“Additionally, we have contracted a local security company to do regular patrols and our staff are equipped with panic buttons linked to the security company. We have installed highend CCTV cameras inside and outside the building, and the SAPS has also installed security cameras overlooking the car park with a direct link in to the station We are offering law enforcement officials who are on duty at the premises between 8pm and close, free coffee,” says Grant.

With a strict take on litter and a focus on being environmentally-friendly, Something Good has adopted a strict no-polystyrene rule. More bins will also be introduced to deter littering.

Since opening, a few changes have been implemented to cater for the higher than expected demand. This includes the redesign of the ice cream parlour to stream line the process and offer a better service. Having reintroduced the old “flick your lights” concept synonymous with the old Something Good, the demand on this has also been exceptionally high and more focus has been placed on how to ensure an enhanced service to these customers.

“It’s really great for PE to have a venue that they can be proud of,” Grant concludes. We will continue to work with our customers and the local community to ensure that what we have to offer them only gets better.”

The new eatery has created 40 new jobs, which includes managers, kitchen staff and waitrons.

Carli van Onselen chosen for prestige tennis tournament in Canada TENNIS South Africa (TSA) has chosen Carli Van Onselen from Sunridge Primary School to represent South Africa in Canada to play in the Le Blanc Cup, one of the most prestigious U.12 tournaments on the International Junior Tennis calendar, which brings together the Top 10 tennis countries in the world.

The Le Blanc Cup, which will be played in Quebec Canada from August 12 to 18, is an international tennis tournament for U.12

girls and boys - the only international tournament of its kind in North America along with the Orange Bowl in the United States of America.

The international flavour of this prestigious tournament assures a very high level of play.

It is an excellent opportunity to measure the best U.12 tennis players in Canada against the top elite from other countries.

The Le Blanc-Cup is a Davis Cup-type tour-

nament and can only be played by invitation.

It is not only an individual tournament, but also a tournament where countries do battle against each other.

Ten teams will be participating - eight teams from foreign countries selected by merit, as well as those from Canada and Quebec.

Each country is made up of two boys and two girls. Players will be playing on clay courts.

Algoa FM Bloodline day today THE sixteenth annual Algoa FM Bloodline Day is set to take place today (Wednesday, July 10)with the aim of encouraging at least 900 people to donate blood on one day within the Algoa FM broadcast region.

The day is about creating much needed awareness regarding the importance of regular and safe blood donation – a heroic act which is often left up to “someone else” to do. Blood donation is something most healthy individuals between the ages of 16 and 65 and who weigh more than 50kgs can do. The appeal is for people not to allow life to get in the way of life.

This promotion has become synonymous with fresh and tasty doughnuts which are sponsored by Pick ’n Pay and this year will

be no different. Pick ’n Pay supports blood donation by hosting various blood drives around the country and their mission on Algoa FM Bloodline Day is to sweeten more people up for the challenge by providing doughnuts.

The first Algoa FM Bloodline Day was held in 1998 in an attempt to avoid the notorious winter blood shortage. Decreased blood stocks during winter months are mainly due to regular donors suffering from colds and flu. A person is not advised to donate blood when they have flu symptoms and if taking antibiotics. It is important to wait seven days after the last dose of antibiotics was taken before donating blood.

Last year a total of 955 units of blood were

collected on Bloodline Day – over three times more units compared to an average day in the Eastern Cape.

This show also launches a new concept for the Radisson Blu Hotel in association with Centrestage called “Razzlin’ at the Radisson” which will see quarterly shows taking place in a cabaret setting at the up-market venue.

In “Whole Lotta Laughs”, you’ll get to meet the unhinged, but well intentioned Guy O Ryan, who desperately wants to become a game ranger to save the Rhino’s, yet just cannot see how his outrageous behaviour and somewhat unorthodox opinions stand in his way.

In attendance to help guide us on the path of righteousness are the somewhat tipsy Irish nun Sister Act of Sister Sisipissterstist and Mother Inferior, whilst Indian Rancid Punjabi shares his advice about things you don’t say to your wife - and his own anxieties about trying to keep his marriage afloat.

In their previous outing “Funny Galore”, the audience were quickly introduced to car guard and fruit seller entrepreneur Virgil September’s “lessor half”, the pap-sak toting Beronyce. This time around, Beronyce gets some airtime herself to help us better understand the frustrations she faces at the hands of her errant husband.

All these shenanigans are seen through the discerning lens of Psychologist Reginald Sneed, whose deep understanding of human nature is put severely to the test.

Other surprises await in a show which is guaranteed to once again have audiences reaching for their tissues to wipe away the tears of mirth, clasping their sides and embracing the restorative side effects of laughter at a fraction of the cost of a single session of therapy.

Both Gino Fabbri and Donna Africa have become firm Centrestage favourites over the years, with their previous shows “Toast”, “Gino Fabbri is Completely Nuts” and “Funny Galore” having garnered them a big fan-base throughout the country.

A “Whole Lotta Laughs” offers an evening of new material from these comedy stalwarts. Whilst this show incorporates the same kind of rambunctious songs and silliness evident in their previous outings, some refreshing new dynamics and musical playfulness are also introduced.

Tickets for the two Radisson shows on July 19 and 20 cost R120 each (R110 for bookings of 8 or more). Thereafter, the show continues the following week at Old Grey until July 27, where tickets cost R110 or R100.

Three special fund-raising performances will take place. The July 23 performance will be in aid of Catholic Order of the Knights of Da Gama.

Festivity on and off Biltong Fest grounds GASTRONOMICAL, Heritage and Architectural Routes, as well as a Golf Day hosted by the Somerset East Golf Club, are just some of the activities happening off the showgrounds at the 23rd Castle Lager East Cape Biltong Festival on from July 12-13.

The Gastronomical Route is a tour of all the restaurants, delis, diners and take away places, as well as pub and grills all around Somerset East.

Those whose interests lie more in looking and learning about old and beautiful things, will enjoy the Heritage and Architectural Route. Participants will take a walk around Somerset East and learn

about all the picturesque beauty that can be found in the town.

The Blue Crane Development Agency, also involved in this year’s festival activities, will be hosting the Cheese, Wine and Biltong Tasting evening on July 12 at the Tourism Hub, while the Somerset East Golf Club will be hosting a Golf Day on July 13. At the festival grounds, festival goers can also participate in a Potjiekos Competition and also look forward to a Best Tasting Biltong Competition.

The Festival further boasts a cosy Beer Tent and hundreds of eclectic stalls for all to enjoy, from biltong to clothes and a variety of some of the best in Karoo cuisine.

Charlo Butchery reaches out to AACL THE Charlo Butchery recently decided to plough back into the community, and chose the Animal Anti-Cruelty League as its beneficiary.

“It’s all about putting back into the community,” said Debbie Pretorius of Charlo Butchery. “We felt that the best way that we could achieve this would be to donate Pets’ Mince and the like to the Animal Anti-Cruelty League, who literally distribute it in the field, where the need is greatest.”

Public Relations Officer for the Animal Anti-Cruelty League, Linda-Louise Swain, stated that through the generosity of the Charlo Butchery on a regular basis, they have also been able to help out smaller satellite animal groups who are not on the receiving end of any major donations.

“It has been absolutely incredible. I have received calls from Debbie telling me that, literally, 4 tons of Chicken will be delivered, or 900kg of mince is available for collection.”

work and the meat is cooked in various homes, packed into ice-cream containers and fed to the hundreds of starving animals that they treat daily in the field at their mobile dipping and treatment spots in the Northern suburbs.

“Just a couple of weeks ago, no one on the network was available and I collected 400kg in my car and made my way to the Walmer Township, where I called some of my thespian friends to bring wheelbarrows! A trail of hungry dogs followed them everywhere!”

Swain said.

“There are 120 dogs at a small, private shelter that benefit regularly from these donations. We cannot express our gratitude sufficiently to Charlo Butchery for truly making a difference to those who cannot speak for themselves. Long may it continue!”

Letter to the Editor: Uitenhage SPCA – desperate situation PLEASE put the Uitenhage SPCA in your prayers as our funds are critically low. A lot of money owing to us has not been paid; therefore we are unfortunately in a situation where we are “cap in hand” once again.

Our good friends have helped us incredibly with our food drive, so our beloved animals have food to eat for at least the next two weeks. However, we have many monthly expenses where monetary donations are urgently needed and greatly appreciated. Our monthly expenses are for our Vet bills to treat, sterilize and innoculate the animals in our care.

Clarification on terminology THE “Ask the Experts” in the edition of the 26th June, is somewhat confusing.

The heading is “Habitation rights and property ownership” whereas in the article reference is made to the surviving spouse as having the usufruct of the halfshare of the property. The Right of Habitatio is different from a usufructuary right.

Habitatio is the right of living in the house of another. The right is limited to residence. Unless otherwise provided for in the Will, the holder of the right of habitatio is liable for such charges as are levied on the occupier of premises, such as water and electricity, but not for charges which fall upon the owner.

In the case of a usufruct, the usufructuary is responsible for any rates and taxes levied on the property during the period of the usufruct, unless the testator has otherwise directed. Unless there is a direction in the Will that the bare-dominion holders will be responsible for half the costs, the usufructuary will be responsible for the full amount.

The usufructuary is also responsible for the upkeep of the property and must effect such repairs as are needed to keep the property in proper repair but not bound to effect improvements or make such repairs as are necessary because the buildings have become dilapidated with age or because damage has been caused through accident or heavy weather, nor bound to replace any property which has bona fide worn out. A usufructuary is also not, in the absence of special circumstances, entitled to claim for improvements made to the property over which the usufruct is enjoyed.

Attorney Jonker is perfectly correct in stating that any improvements should be made by agreement with the bare-dominion holders with specific arrangements as to liability for payment.

I trust that in formulating the answer to the reader’s questions, the terms and conditions of the Will have been examined to ensure that there is provision that a half-share of rates and taxes and un-stated other expenses would be payable by the bare-dominion holders.

Paying capital gains tax on instalment sale THIS week the Property Poser panel deals with a question from a reader regarding the timing of the payment of Capital Gains Tax when it comes to the sale of an immovable property.

The reader’s case is a little unusual as he explains that the sale in question is an instalment sale over a period of 48 months, which obviously spans more than one tax year.

To begin, it is useful to consider briefly the mechanics of a sale of an immovable property in instalments, says Stiaan Jonker of Smith Tabata Attorneys in Port Elizabeth.

“Most often, the sale of immovable property takes place when a purchaser either finances the acquisition, typically by way of a mortgage bond, or pays cash for the property, or a combination of the two.”

Upon the deal being finalised, it is recorded in writing, often by way of an offer to purchase, which serves as the agreement of sale

when signed by both parties, says Jonker.

“Transfer of the property from the seller to the purchaser then takes place four to six weeks later, with occupation given either on transfer or at an agreed date.”

Jonker says the Alienation of Land Act does make provision for the sale of immovable property in instalments.

“The contract, as with any sale of fixed property, must be in writing and address the provisions prescribed in the Act.” How it works is that the purchaser pays the agreed instalments over the agreed period of time, says Jonker.

“Other aspects, such as insurance, occupation, any interest payable and the like, must be addressed and recorded.”

Once the purchaser completes his or her payment obligations, he or she can claim transfer of the property, which takes place in the usual manner, says Susan Chapman from Rawson Properties PE Platinum.

“We can thus see that, while the payment

structure is a little different to the usual sale of fixed property, the end result is the same. Both methods lead to the transfer of the property, assuming no breach or cancellation of the contract took place beforehand.”

Chapman says the seller is responsible for the declaration and payment of CGT and the payment is triggered by the disposal, or deemed disposal, of an asset.

“In the instance of the sale of a fixed property, whether brought about by an instalment sale agreement or otherwise, the trigger for CGT is the disposal of it. And disposal of a fixed property takes place on transfer.”

The seller will then have to do the relevant calculations as to the amount on which the CGT is to be applied, says Chapman.

THE SWD Eagles on last week Thursday concluded a successful Coca-Cola Under-18 Academy Week as they thumped Eastern Province 32-7 in the grand finale of the tournament at Glenwood High in Durban.

The George-based team were in top form throughout the competition as they secured thrilling victories against the Golden Lions and Western Province in their opening matches.

The Eagles entertained the crowd by running in a total of five tries to only one scored by EP. A penalty by John Jackson opened the scoring in the seventh minute, which triggered the team’s first half dominance as they cruised to a 22-0 lead at the break.

Eastern Province, however, scored a late consolation try for their only points of the match.

From the rear it is a bit more quizzical as it resembles the “Three Musketeers” viz Toyota-Aygo, Citroën-C1 and Peugeot-107.

However the large “H” tells you: “I’m a Honda, mate!” From this you can deduct that the new Honda Brio (pronounced Brie-You and not “Braai-Ou”) is a competitor in the small car segment of the market.

Was I surprised upon climbing into the Brio!

With my bulky body up front I thought that one would at least be able to get a newspaper between the driver’s seat and the rear passenger space... on its side. Then I realised that I had to move the seat forward as the space utilization under the dash-board up front was well planned. With the steering wheel being height adjustable more space is created for the driver with a “boep”.

The design of the Brio is not “awesome” and as I have stated, it can easily be confused with the “Three Musketeers”.

Ergonomically, the layout up front is acceptable with all the controls in easy reach from the driver’s position. The instrument cluster fits snugly up front, blending in with the twotone, albeit plastic, dash, creating a nice variation to the normal mono-coloured theme.

The “sandy” coloured upholstery, albeit cloth, makes the interior look plush and it creates a cool feel in the warm South African climate.

It being a small car there is space at the rear for two adults but that would not be for longdistance travelling. A 5-passenger rating might be aimed at the people from the Far-East, but with the typical South African statures I would give it a 2 + 2 rating. On the other hand three children will fit in without too much of a squeeze.

The Ride Our test vehicle is the Honda Brio 1.2 Comfort (Manual). Upon start-up I was impressed at the low sound level of the engine. It sort of purred into life and was ready to take me to wherever I wanted to go.

With the 5-speed box the Brio had no problem getting us in motion and effortless through the gears to cruising speed and once out of town to 120 km/h. The power to weight ratio of the 1.2 engine showed to be well designed. The kerb weight is 916 kg. On the economic front the on

Pressing down on the accelerator resulted in the Brio responding without delay, even at a low speed. There again that is why there are 5 gears in the box - use them when required.

During the test period I took the Brio on a gravel/sandy road. At first there was a very annoying rattle until I established that it was the key-ring on the key in the ignition.

Bar that, I was really impressed at the handling, as well as the sturdy non-rattling way that the Brio handled the quite corrugated and sandy road. The only drawback which I found was that the dust settled on the hatch-door leaving a definite “spoor” that you had done some non-tarred driving. As a matter of fact the same happened when I passed a patch of spilled fuel on the road.

Some technical jargon The Brio is powered by a 1198cc transverse in-line 4-cylinder petrol engine with 16 valves.

With power of 65 kW @ 6000 rpm max. and torque of 109 Nm @ 4500 rpm the Brio was not at all a lazybones.

The engine drive is through a 5-speed manual transmission via the front wheels. The wheels are pressed-steel 14” with 175/65 R14 tyres. The spare wheel is a full-sized wheel, which was above expectation given the space

Because of the above, and when the Brio is parked in rain the visibility through the window is compromised without a wiper and washer unit.

The Verdict What can I say about a completely new addition to the market from Honda? The Brio has to prove itself in the market but from the outset I can say that it looks positive. If it is a runabout you need or a roaming “work-shop” for an IT technician the Brio should cater for your needs. As a small family vehicle for daily use, you should be relatively happy, however with the rear seats up there is at least space at the back for a laptop, lunch-box and newspaper, so to speak.

When I compare the Brio against its fellow brand names in the same segment, then the price tag looks inspiring and given the Honda quality a definite must test drive before you decide on another brand. Personally, I have fallen proverbially “hook, line and sinker” for the Brio.

Bar the few oopsies, and the week-long driving experience, I’m sticking my neck out by giving it a 4.5 out of 5.

No challenge too big for local quad racer, Chardri Monk EVEN a broken back could not stand between Port Elizabeth Graphic Design Student, Chardri Monk (22), and the sport she is so passionate about, Quad racing.

Chardri, who is originally from East London but studying in Port Elizabeth, took part in June in the Ladies’ Quad Class Challenge at the recent ‘Mantshwabisi’ desert race in Botswana for the third and fourth rounds of the 2013 season.

Chardri has been competing in off-road quad racing since 2009 and finished second in the Ladies’ Quad Class Challenge in 2011. In the same year she also competed in the Silver Class Challenge for riders doing 75% of the full race distance. She finished second in that class as well.

Last year she crashed early in the season and broke her back, but she recovered and started participating again towards the end of the season. This year she won the Ladies’ Quad Class at the opening round held in the Bronkhorstspruit area. She could unfortunately not finish the second round as she ran out of fuel due to a “miscommunication” between father Craig who is her “pit crew” and herself and circumstances. They travel to all the races from East London.

The most recent Mantshwabisi’ desert race race was a long one for the female quad competi-

tors who had to complete about 250 kilometres each day on a route consisting of sandy tracks between thorny bushes and some rocky sections while the dry and dusty conditions forced them to race with even more care.

A cracked engine casing resulted in Chardri not finishing the first day in the desert. But this could not deter her and she put up a brave fight the next day – and even survived a tumble and a wrist injury – to bring her Team Thesens Generators KTM quad home in the second place, after racing for almost five and a half hours.

Two weeks before the Botswana event she also competed in Uis in Namibia. Her quad broke on the sighting lap and she borrowed a quad that was set up for motocross/track racing. She managed three-quarters of the race with extremely hard suspension on a ‘borrowed’ quad, but had to call it a day when she dislocated her thumb.

The next round of the 2013 series takes place on Saturday, July 20, in the Vryheid area in KwaZulu-Natal. The girls had to complete the full race distance at the season’s first two sprint events (180 km) and then had to complete half the race distance at the two-day ‘marathon’ (250 km each day). Their race will now be 140 km (full distance is 380 km) and the battle for more points towards the title will continue at Vryheid.

THE 2013 German Grand Prix is one that will stay in the memory bank of Sebastian Vettel for quite some time. Bettered in Saturday’s qualifying session by Lewis Hamilton, the reigning world champ had it all to do in Sunday’s race.

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton finished a tenth clear of Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel to take pole position for the German Grand Prix.

The biggest casualty of qualifying was teammate and British Grand Prix race winner, Nico Rosberg. An initial run in the second part of Saturday’s qualifying appeared to be enough for the German to advance to the top ten shoot-out.

However, a late flurry of flying laps in the closing stages of the second session of qualifying, pushed Rosberg down to eleventh and out of contention for the front row of the grid.

Ever dependable Jenson Button managed to drag his McLaren into the top ten and continually impressive Daniel Ricciardo and Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg advanced to the final part of qualifying.

But Saturday once again belonged to Lewis Hamilton. The 2008 champion pipped championship leader Sebastian Vettel to pole position by a tenth of a second. Khaya Cheshire is an outreach project of the Summerstrand Cheshire Homes and looks after mentally and physically disabled children and youth living in the impoverished Walmer Township. They offer a day care facility in a double classroom situated in Victoria Drive alongside the Township and currently fetch 23 children every week day, feed them and create an environment in which they can learn sound values, basic educational skills and can be loved.

With no other facilities in the Township to care for these children, Khaya Cheshire is making a huge difference in their lives and with support from an event like the Urban Run will be able to improve the quality of the lives they touch on a daily basis.

Jokey jockey full of surprises IS RACING sport? Of course it is when jockey S’mang Khumalo shows how Heavy Metal rocks with a win by the shortest of whiskers in last weekend’s Vodacom Durban July Handicap at Greyville.

Not only did Khumalo become the first black jockey in the event’s 116-year history to win South Africa’s premier horse race, but in so doing also added this triumph to three other major races in the last year or so, those being the R2-million Sansui Summer Cup, the R2-million President’s Champion Challenge and the Zulu Kingdom Explorer Golden Slipper.

While punters might have been surprised at the 16-1 shot’s narrow triumph, cool as a cucumber Khumalo was not. Why should he be, with a name like S’mang that in Zulu somewhat aptly means “surprise”? Laughing after the win the jockey joked: “Maybe my birth was a nice surprise to my mother. I always like to spring surprises!”

The Sharks’ woes meanwhile continued at Loftus – if only just. It wasn’t Pat Lambie’s day for goal-kicking. He missed four. In a

match that for sheer bloody-mindedness was totally unforgiving, the Sharks missed no fewer than six kicks at goal, the remaining two by fullback Riaan Viljoen.

Safety a key consideration in preparations for VW Rally PREPARATIONS for the 2013 Volkswagen Rally, which takes place on Friday and Saturday, July 19 and 20, are in full swing.

New stages have been plotted, deals have been struck and organising is at an advanced stage. What is waiting for the national field of competitors is a tough event that is going to make them work for a good result.

The field will start at the Auto Pavilion as is per tradition and then will head out to the various stages. The 2013 event sees the return of Jeffrey’s Bay and two stages will take place there, both on Friday. The finish is, as per usual, at Kings Beach in Port Elizabeth.

“We are trying to achieve two things with the rally,” said route organiser Joe Fourie. “Firstly, we are trying to make the event exciting for the competitors with a rally that will challenge their preparation and skill. Then the aim is to make the event as exciting and accessible for spectators as we possibly can.

“Every year the goal is to make this event as easy for spectators to access as possible,” said Fourie.

“We encourage everyone who has an interest in motorsport, and those who simply want to enjoy some action, to attend as many of the stages as they can to see the national field of rally competitors in action. It is after all the only chance they have to support these talented competitors.”

While the emphasis is on making the Volkswagen Rally as spectator-friendly as possible, this is not done without a firm eye on safety – for both rally fans and the com-

peting teams.

“There is a dedicated group of people organising every facet of this event,” said Fourie.

“The part of the organisation the public has the most contact with is the marshals.

They are tasked with keeping the public viewing areas safe for the fans and also to ensure the fans remain safely out of the way of the competitors.

A no-nonsense approach is the best way

to describe our attitude to safety – to keep the event the success it is, we do not compromise on this aspect.”
