Police finally move into new 10111 centre

HE multi-million rand building which many has referred to as a white elephant, will finally be put to use after members of the 10111 emergency response centre moved into the building in Korsten last week.
10111 centres in the province have been staggered into a number of phases. “We have come to the stage where we have completed phase one in relation to the Port Elizabeth and East London Centres. “The new systems and resources in place at the call centres will certainly go a long way in
enhancing service delivery to our communities,” said Provincial Commissioner Lt General Celiwe Binta. She further indicated that the new system will assist the police in the following: . Improving public access to the call centres as the incoming number of telephone lines at the centres have increased from 7 to 29 lines;
The state-of-the-art building has been vacant since 2010 with staff working from the Mount Road police station until now. This move coincided with 10111 centre staff in East London also moving into their new premises last week. Controversy surrounded the Korsten centre since the beginning, with Schauderville and Korsten residents making it clear that they did not want the building in their midst. In March 2012 the PE Express reported on residents’ concerns about health risks linked to the radio call tower at the centre. The Schauder/ Korsten Action Committee believed that the tower posed possible health risks. In September last year the East London Express, sister publication of PE Express, reported that a damning report on the state of the emergency response centres of the SAPS in the Eastern Cape province was tabled by the Provincial Safety and Security portfolio committee in the legislature. The report, which was compiled after visits to 10111 centres and flying squads all over the Eastern Cape, highlighted the difficult working conditions that members of the SAPS are subjected to such as outdated equipment, lack of vehicles and shortages of radios.
. Provide an un-interrupted service as power failures will no longer negatively influence the operations of these centres. New power back-up systems have been supplied which will allow the centres to operate un-interrupted for 14 days on the back-up systems;
