Metro to hand over thousands of title deeds REPORTER

O

VER 8000 Nelson Mandela Bay residents will become proud homeowners soon.

These residents, some of whom have been waiting for houses for over eight years, are from areas such as Helenvale, Veeplaas, Malabar and Chris Hani informal settlement. The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality announced on Sunday that 1 940 title deeds have been approved for handover to homeowners.

Councillor Nqaba Bhanga, Member of Mayoral Committee: Human Settlements, said, “A title deed provides legal ownership of a home, an asset which can turn the tide on poverty for our most vulnerable residents. Owning a home is the first step.” Bhanga added that local government is meant to play a significant role in reversing the effects of spatial segregation under apartheid through service delivery and provision of housing. “Previous governments in this Metro have

failed to make significant progress in this regard. Alarmingly, between 2013 and 2015 under former administrations, not a single title deed was handed out in this Metro.” According to Bhanga, the new government appreciates the important role that homeownership plays in redress. “Thus, we have embarked on an operation to clean up the housing list and ensure all rightful homeowners are in possession of a title deed. Under this new government, ownership will become a reality to more and more people.”
