Metro to hand over thousands of title deeds REPORTER

O

VER 8000 Nelson Mandela Bay residents will become proud homeowners soon.

These residents, some of whom have been waiting for houses for over eight years, are from areas such as Helenvale, Veeplaas, Malabar and Chris Hani informal settlement. The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality announced on Sunday that 1 940 title deeds have been approved for handover to homeowners.

Councillor Nqaba Bhanga, Member of Mayoral Committee: Human Settlements, said, “A title deed provides legal ownership of a home, an asset which can turn the tide on poverty for our most vulnerable residents. Owning a home is the first step.” Bhanga added that local government is meant to play a significant role in reversing the effects of spatial segregation under apartheid through service delivery and provision of housing. “Previous governments in this Metro have

failed to make significant progress in this regard. Alarmingly, between 2013 and 2015 under former administrations, not a single title deed was handed out in this Metro.” According to Bhanga, the new government appreciates the important role that homeownership plays in redress. “Thus, we have embarked on an operation to clean up the housing list and ensure all rightful homeowners are in possession of a title deed. Under this new government, ownership will become a reality to more and more people.”

The Executive Mayor of NMB, Athol Trollip, put a challenge to Kings supporters to come out and show their support for the Southern Kings. “Our rugby team has, against all odds, done very well this season. Let’s get behind Eastern Cape rugby by filling our stadium on match day,” Trollip wrote on his Facebook page. Southern Kings COO Charl Crous welcomed the call for supporters from all over to fill the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

OPEN EVENING 18 May 2017 18:00 – 19:00

“The support the team has received since the Australian tour and victory against the Melbourne Rebels has been amazing. The Southern Kings’ performance has been influenced by the positive support the team has been receiving. If we see this support being converted to numbers that walk through our stadium gates, then we can be assured that the team will continue to make history on the field in the Vodacom Super Rugby competition. “We are yet to see the number of supporters that we have translated to attendance numbers on our match days, but now we hope to see as many of our loyal fans filling the seats of our beautiful stadium in our remaining home matches,” Crous said. The game starts at 5.15pm on May 13. The curtain-raiser will see the EP Kings play against the Border

Bulldogs in the SuperSport Challenge at 2.30pm. Tickets for the match are selling between R60 and R80 and can be bought from ticketpro at www.ticketpros.co.za. There will also be live music and a number of food trucks will be selling food at the stadium. Win! Win! Win!

The PE Express is giving away two double tickets to the match on Saturday. To enter, go to our Facebook page (PE Express Newspaper), find the Southern Kings’ logo and comment with who you will be supporting on Saturday. Include the hashtag #FillTheStadium in your comment. Winners will be contacted on Facebook.

SANRAL trains future engineers REPORTER THE South African National Roads Agency SOC Ltd (SANRAL) is providing crucial training to engineering graduates at its Training Academy in Port Elizabeth. “The advantage of being part of SANRAL’s Training Academy is that it affords young graduates the opportunity to participate in a structured training programme under the supervision of experienced professional civil engineers,” said Ivan Ellis, Training Academy mentor and professional civil engineer. “They gain experience which will allow them to achieve the expected outcomes required to register with the Engineering Council of South Africa and to take their rightful place in the civil engineering industry,” said Ellis. SANRAL established its Training Academy in 2014, starting with three engineering graduates who completed their civil engineering studies with a SANRAL bursary. This number has since grown to 27 graduates including three from the Eastern Cape Department of Transport who have been seconded to the Training Academy to gain experience in the planning and design of road infrastructure. In an industry that has always been maledominated, Ellis found it very encouraging that 10 of the 27 graduates at the academy are women. “SANRAL has developed a Candidate Training Masterplan to enable candidates in meeting the Engineering Council of South Africa’s outcomes. Participants undergo intensive training in the investigation and design aspects of projects under SANRAL’s continuous National Road programme of works.”

The masterplan covers all disciplines of road engineering, primarily focused on: . Geometric design . Traffic analysis and capacity . Materials investigation and utilisation . Pavement and materials evaluations and design . Storm water drainage (including subsurface drainage). Some of the projects that the graduates are currently working on include the N2 Sections 12 and 13, from Nanaga to Komgha River, and the R75 between Uitenhage and Graaff Reinet. These include all facets of design where young engineers produce designs, drawings and contract documentation for the projects to advance to the construction phase. In most cases, the graduates are given the opportunity to visit sites to observe the outcome of their work. Derusha Govender from Durban was a SANRAL bursary recipient. “The postgraduate engineering experience provided by SANRAL to its graduates, is not comparable to any other organisation. One simply can’t get the same experience elsewhere. The training programme which SANRAL has is very structured in assisting graduates to gain experience in key training areas (site, laboratory, design) required for registration as a professional engineer. “I am proud to work for a company which places a great amount of emphasis on the professional development of the young talent which joins the company, not only enhancing technical skill, but also in nurturing leaders of the future,” said Govender. She graduated in 2014 with a BSc Civil Engineering degree from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). Before joining the

Training Academy in Port Elizabeth, she gained 17 months site experience at Mount Edgecombe Interchange. Thereafter she worked at the Soilco Materials Investigations (Pty) Ltd from the beginning of September 2016 for a period of five months. Nonkululeko Nzimande and Origin Sengwane both graduated with BEng in Civil Engineering degrees from the University of Pretoria in 2014. They are both SANRAL bursary recipients and received three months of road materials laboratory experience, two months of land and survey experience and 18 months of site experience before joining the Training Academy this year. Nzimande, who is from Richmond in KwaZulu-Natal, said, “The SANRAL programme is good and structured in comparison to that of private companies. My goal is to be a materials specialist one day.” When Nzimande is not working at SANRAL she is busy studying towards a BEng Honours degree at the University of Pretoria. Sengwane, who is from Johannesburg, is currently in his final year of BEng Honours at the University of Pretoria. He hopes to start working on his Master’s degree (MEng) next year. “The mentors at SANRAL are really knowledgeable. This is a good programme because of the resources at our disposal. The experience we gain allows us to decide whether we’d like to work as a generalist civil engineer or specialise one day,” said Sengwane. The nature of the work offered to candidates at the Training Academy equips candidates to fulfil the design-related requirements towards becoming registered professional engineers.

Addo’s ranger dogs receive bulletproof vests REPORTER THE two canine members of Addo Elephant National Park’s (AENP) ranger corps are now just as protected from life-threatening situations as their human counterparts thanks to the donation of bulletproof vests from integrated risk solutions company, Quemic. In addition to the vests, the company also donated two trauma/first-aid kits specifically for the dogs, as well as dog food for an entire year. Quemic’s Regional Ranger in the Western Cape, Nikki Haynes, was born in Addo when his father, Mike, was the Hospitality Services Manager in the Park. Mike heard about Addo’s need for the donated items at a demonstration with the dogs about two months ago and thought it was an ideal opportunity for Haynes to become involved as Quemic already provides firearm training to SANParks’ Environmental Monitors. The company is also involved in anti-rhino poaching operations with private landowners and other nature conservation agencies. Quemic Director Gerrit Lamprecht and Haynes were there to hand the safety equipment and food over to the dogs and their handlers in the park. The vests, trauma/first-aid

kits and food is valued at over R130 000. “If one is personally involved in nature conservation, as we are through our business, you know the landscape and try to help wherever you can. “All of us in the nature fraternity need to look out for one another, irrespective of the size of our organisations. And for me, personally, this was just the perfect fit, given my history with and in Addo,” said Haynes. Addo’s two canine rangers, Banshee and Bandit, are about five years old and provide sniffing and tracking support to the rangers. Bandit, provided to AENP by the Endangered Wildlife Trust, and Banshee will now be kitted out in their bullet-proof vests while on duty, to protect them from gunshot wounds and knife attacks. Their handlers will be given training on how to use the dogs’ trauma/first-aid kits, which are advanced enough to sustain them until they reach a veterinarian. AENP’s Conservation Manager, John Adendorff, said, “We cannot tell you how grateful we are for your handover. We want to give our dogs everything we can to ensure their safety, as we do with our rangers. They are integral to our operations and today’s sponsorship ensures that they have the best protection when they’re in the field.”

Mastertons joins NMMU, Fairview Racecourse for annual Derby Day REPORTER MASTERTONS Coffee will be adding a touch of “coffee flair” to Fairview Racecourse’s annual Derby Day this year. The event, which is a classic stake race for three-year-old horses, will take place on May 13, the first Saturday Derby Day in years. Synonymous with the horse racing events is the dress code. Fashion at the races has become an institution with men and women using the occasion as a prime opportunity to showcase their style, flair and creativity.

Annually, NMMU’s Fashion and Textile Department hosts a fashion show during the Derby Day with garments designed by their second year students. This year, Mastertons Coffee has taken the theme. Each student was asked to create a garment around the overall theme of “Out of Africa”, which is a Mastertons coffee blend. The students have based their design on a blend of their choice, but all designs must incorporate an African feel. They have the freedom to incorporate various elements of coffee from the beans to the hessian bags or the packaging. Each student

Mr SA contestant aims to raise R10 000 for CANSA ANIKA DE BEER MR South Africa 2017 contestant Muneer Holloway has received his first challenge in the competition – raising at least R10 000 for CANSA. The 20-year-old was born and bred in Gelvan Park and has dreamed about competing for the Mr South Africa title since he was a young boy. “Competing in the Mr South Afri-

ca competition has always been one of my dreams. I would like to make a difference and be a role model and an ambassador for my country,” Holloway said. His biggest inspirations are his mother and sister. “They are always there when I need help or advice. As a family we have been through quite a lot, but we always stick together. I’d like to thank my family for always supporting me. I am excited about this journey.” Holloway, a former model of Sophisticate Models, was discovered when he entered and won his first competition, Mr Teen Eastern Cape 2015. He has since also claimed Rolemodels’ pageant titles of Mr Port Elizabeth and Mr Eastern Cape. As part of the Mr South Africa 2017 competition the contestants are required to raise a minimum of R10 000 for CANSA by May 31. In addition to donations and sponsorships, Holloway plans to raise the funds through raffles and by hosting a high tea event. Mr South Africa 2017 will be announced in November. The community can vote for Holloway as many times as they would like during the course of the competition. Simply SMS MRSA009 to 47439. Anyone who wishes to contribute to the fundraising for CANSA can contact Muneer on 078 327 4810 or muneerholloway81@gmail.com. < Muneer Holloway.

Kaleidoskoop vier tien jaar by La Colline

Anique Jordaan en Jouba Jordaan, die Afrikaanse musiekduo, Kaleidos koop. FOTO:LISA HNATOWICZ

Kaartjies teen R120 per persoon is beskikbaar by Brenda op 083 226 1038.

I want to thank Mama Sheena for changing my life, M y n a m e i s Genevivi from Willowmore, I am a single mother who lost hope and money to different doctors, and prophets. Early last year I was shocked when I saw my old friend driving an expensive car, he took me home, on our way home I ask him what had changed his life in such short time. He told me his secret. He gave me a magazine with an article about Mama Sheena. I never hesitated. I contacted her and she explained to me things like: Shortboys to put money in account, Magic Ring to win money games and luck, Magic Wallet to multiply money. She also has Rats to put money in the house on the same day. She explained to me and I chose Shortboys. I followed the instructions, next thing I saw a large amount of money in my account. She asked me to withdraw her 10% and I was very excited the money was real. And I told my sister about her and she phoned her for RATS. Now she is living a happy life. She has a Tavern business. Thanks Mama Sheena for changing our lives. From then she never contacted us and she also helps with: Lost Lover, Delete Loans, Divorce, Finish unfinished jobs by other healers. Call or whatsapp now:

healers, as I have tried almost all of them in Eastern Cape. Not one had helped me, until Maama Fatima saved me, my life was a mess. I had two big court cases, no job at the time and my girlfriend had left me. My life was upside down, luckily I read about Maama Fatima. She gave me a MAGIC RING and the first day, I won R420 000 in the casino, my financial problems were solved, my court cases were dismissed and I am happily in love now. The name Maama Fatima means joy in my life Stop suffering in silence.

My Names is Charniel Johanes from Western Cape. Firstly I want to thank KING LWASA for what he done for me in my life and for all success I have achieved because of him Financially. There are many doctors out there who claim they can change people’s life financially while they cannot do it and I’m saying this out of what I have been going through trying to change my life. Before I met the real one KING LWANGA, I lost a lot of money until last year 24th October when I read about KING LWANGA who helped a lot of people by using SHORT Boys to put money into their account in 2hrs and he only take 20% after the success of work. Am happy with my family and we got our own business running. He also got RATS to bring money in your house, MAGIC RING to win money games, Lost lover, Family Matters and Divorce all problems solved in same day

TESTIOMONY OF GOOD NEWS SAVED BY MAMA MAKHULU Hi everyone my name is Nisha from George, I've been suffering since 2012 when my husband passed he was the only one working. I didn't know what was next for me and my kids, I tried doing small jobs but still I couldn't even afford to feed or send my kids to good schools or buy them nice clothes. For a very long time there was no happiness in our life, I had to find solution for our financial situation, I visited different pastors, prophets and traditional healers but no one could help me, I just kept losing the little I had. I had no one to help me until this day I meet my old friend Julie who introduced me to a women Mama Makhulu. At first I was scared thinking it might be the same story just like other healers I met before her. She explained to me all the options, I choose shortboys to put money in my account. I couldn't believe when I received the bank sms saying I received money into my account, after work I paid her 15%. Am happy today because of Prof David, he turned my life in same day and he has many options to choose from like; Rats, Magic stick, Magic Wallet, Magic ring for Lotto, lost lover.

Call or whatsapp Mama Makhulu for quick real results 081 337 9813

Strikers lose lead in Showvillage fights for survival MOFA Premier League SELBY MADIKANE

SELBY MADIKANE REAL Strikers failed to maintain their lead in the Motherwell Football Association (MOFA) Premier League after they had lost 2-1 to

Real Aces at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Sunday. The two outfits gave a good account of themselves from the start of the game. The strikers of the two sides were innocuous. Therefore, fans saw the first half end in a goalless draw after the battle was fought mainly in the centre of the field. Strikers registered their first goal following a penalty kick that was scored by their midfielder Zingisile Madolwana in the 57th minute. Aces looked cool, calm and collected as if they were not trailing by an odd goal to nought. Aces then, however, changed their style of playing and played running soccer. They managed to cancel Strikers’ lead when Mxolisi Madolwana was rewarded with a spectacular goal in the 78th minute. Strikers were forced to defend as Aces launched more attacks. The long-awaited goal was finally banged in by Aces right winger, Thulani Chikoya Gqanto, in the 88th minute. Other MOFA Premier League results

SHOWVILLAGE United FC fought tooth and nail to beat Camper United 1-0 in their bid to maintain their status in the SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay SAB Regional League at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Sunday.

The game was evenly balanced as both sides tried to prevent making unnecessary mistakes in their crucial areas. However, Showvillage, who are popularly known as The Stallions, were the only side that registered their winning goal thanks to the big striker, Monwabisi Zinto, in the last stages of the first half. Showvillage supporters expected that their side would find the back of the net in the second half, but Camper defenders did their job excellently. The game ended with the final score of 1-0 in favour of Showvillage. In another game, Despatch Pioneers gave their management and their diehard supporters a reason to celebrate with two victories. Pioneers beat PE Sundowns 5-4 in their first clash and then beat Fairview Rovers 1-0. Both games were played at Khayamnandi Grounds in Despatch. Young Cosmos kissed the regional league goodbye with their 5-3 loss to the new league champions, NMMU Madibaz, in their match at South Campus Grounds. The game between Golden Aces and Fairview Rovers did not take place as African Bombers RFC and Barbarians RFC played their league at Zwide Stadium which is the home ground of Golden Aces.

Wells Dragons RFC defeat Morning Stars RFC in EP match SELBY MADIKANE IN what was described as the ultimate grudge match, Wells Dragons RFC truimphed over their neighbours, Morning Stars, 20-8 in an EP Rugby PE Metro Sub-Union B game at Motherwell NU 1 Stadium on Saturday. Stars gave Dragons a tough time and as a result they were awarded a penalty by referee Zolani Mcopele. Awonke Dyeshana guided his side to a 3-0 lead when he successfully kicked a penalty over the poles. Dragons were put on the back foot as Stars attempted to increase their lead. Stars scrumhalf, Sakhele Stemele, came up with a beautiful try in the corner of the scoring line. Then things changed completely as Dragons’ centres, Jason Cemoette and Shaun Witbooi, initiated a good move in the 22 metre

area of Stars. Cemoette scored Dragons’ opening try at

the stroke of the first half with their fullback, Mohamed Jacobs, converting the try to de-

crease their deficit to 8-7. Stars maintained their narrow lead until half-time. Dragons registered their second try courtesy of Shaun Witbooi, while Jacobs converted it to steal the lead from their opponents with the score at 14-8. Cemoette sustained a rib injury and was replaced by Timothy Sass. The score was 17-8 after Dragons were awarded a penalty which was successfully kicked over the poles by Jacobs. Dragons sealed the game at 20-8 after Jacobs came up with a drop goal. Dragons’ players Cemoette, Witbooi, Andre Williams and Victor Ratangee were the most influential players towards their side’s win. In the Reserves Section Morning Stars managed a hard-fought 8-7 win over Wells Dragons.

Plenty of surprises in last games of ABC Motsepe League SELBY MADIKANE THE ABC Motsepe League finally lowered the curtain on its league with the last of the games being played on Saturday. Some of the games were full of drama. Going into the game with a one point lead on the log table, Future Tigers lost 2-0 to EC Bees in their tough game that was played at Bisho Stadium on Saturday. Bees were crowned as the

new provincial champions. Morning Stars took Matta Milan supporters aback when they thwarted their side 13-1 at Zwide Stadium. Stars, who are languishing in the relegation zone, are crossing their fingers that Bees win the provincial league promotional playoffs that will be played at a later date which is still to be announced. If Bees are promoted to play in the National First Division, Morning Stars will secure their

place in the ABC Motsepe League. In another game, Young Ideas failed to maintain their status in the ABC Motsepe League after they were led to a 3-3 draw by Highbury at Gelvandale Stadium. Lion City earned a sweet 2-0 revenge win over Callies at Saints Ground. City were defeated 1-0 by Callies in the first round game at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium. To the dismay of many football fans, SUBS were awarded three maximum points after Tor-

nado failed to pitch up for a game that was scheduled to take place at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium. FC Buffalo, who had a torrid time during the 2016/2017 league season, astounded Mdantsane Mighty Bucks after they devastated them 2-0 at Jan Smuts Grounds. Walter Sisulu University shared a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Mthatha City at Ibika Campus in Butterworth. Matatiele Professionals thumped City Lads 3-0 at Thandanani Stadium in Matatiele.

PELFA Over 35 League kicks off FRANCOIS ROTHNER TONIGHT, May 10, will see the start of the 2017 Port Elizabeth Legends Football Association (PELFA) Over 35 League. The 2016 champions, Callies, will start the defence of their title against Old Grey at Callies. For Callies Ryan Truelove has made a comeback and he is planning to put a few goals in the back of the net.

The talented Riaan Baarth will be used as a striker for Callies, but he is also very comfortable as a goalkeeper. Old Grey will most definitely take the fight to Callies with the likes of Jason Aitken and Deon Carolus up front. Brian Barendse and Andrew Beynon will be looking after the midfield. Defenders, Kagan Assam and Joogoo Julius, will be the heart of Old Grey’s backline with Dale Pay in the sticks. Priory, who are now using NMMU South as their home ground, will host Kuyga Mas-

ters. Priory will have Rory Mortimer and Greg Ducie up front with 55-year-old Cecil Camacho as the experienced player in defence and new signing, Siraaj Fredericks, as keeper. PE City will open their season with a tough fixture against Hearts. Hearts have in their squad top goalscorers, Ian Stevenson and Justin Milne, with Travis La Mude in the midfield and Stephen Morgan and Jerome Cupido in the backline. Westpark have secured Londt Park Sports

Club as their home base this year and they will face Shamrocks in their first match. Fuad Lagerdien, the upfront this season for Shamrocks, will give all defenders a run for their money. Fixtures and kickoff times are as follows:

PE City vs Hearts at Victoria Park Sports Club at 7pm NMBM vs African Leopards The Oval at 7pm Priory vs Kuyga Masters at NMMU South Field A at 7:30pm Callies vs Old Grey at Callies at 7:30pm Westpark vs Shamrocks Londt Park Sports Club at 8pm

TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE

F1 returns to Europe for Spanish GP THERE isn’t too much about Spain’s Circuit de Catalunya that isn’t already known. As the fifth round of the 2017 season, this staple of the Formula 1 calendar has, over the years, become the definitive barometer of car performance. The 4.6-kilometre layout of the Spanish circuit comprises the perfect mixtures to test car balance and aerodynamic efficiency while the start/finish strait provides a modest test of power output. The high and medium speed turns, which litter the first sector, test stability and grip while the lower speed third sector is the perfect test of low-speed mechanical grip.

A quick car through the twisty bits of Catalunya’s final sector invariably translates into it being good at street circuits such as Monaco and Singapore. This would suggest that Ferrari would be the favourite – and they are. The stellar aerodynamic package that they have produced in 2017 will be the Italian team’s biggest weapon. In Bahrain the Ferrari excelled in the high to medium speed first sector and in Russia both the Ferrari’s performance in the final, twisty, sector dwarfed what Mercedes was able to produce. Combine these two sectors and you have a layout similar to the Circuit de Catalunya. What may be Ferrari’s Achilles

heel are the compounds which tyre supplier Pirelli has nominated for the weekend. While the track surface in Spain tends to be more abrasive, substantial track temperature will be required to get the soft, medium, and hard compounds to its optimal working range. “I’m not sure if it’ll help us or not, but I just don’t think it’s going to be good for anyone,” said Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo. “Hopefully, for Barcelona’s sake, it’s hot and, therefore, these harder tyres work, but if it’s cold then it’s going to be a struggle for everyone.” While important for every team and driver on the grid, the Spanish Grand Prix weekend is vital to

the rest of Red Bull’s 2017 campaign. In 2016 the Milton Keyesbased team left the Spanish circuit with Max Verstappen as a first-time Grand Prix winner and with great expectations. The overhaul in regulations held the expectation that Red Bull would be a championship contender in 2017. But the season has started with the team significantly off the pace. They hope that their plan to rectify this begins to fall in place this weekend. The hope is that the introduction of a B-spec car and a “revamped” chassis will allow the team to make a significant step forward. “I hope we can be a bit closer to the top teams or that we can at least follow them,” said 2016

Spanish GP winner Max Verstappen. “That would already be a good step forward.” Ironically, even without a chassis upgrade the characteristics of the Spanish circuit traditionally plays well to the strengths of the Red Bull. In Russia, for unknown reasons, Lewis Hamilton was considerably off the pace with both Ferraris and his teammate beating him up. This has given Valtteri Bottas a crucial boost of confidence that could be telling. As for Ferrari, their biggest asset is the belief that they have more than a good chance of being at the sharp end. And if the temperatures soar, it’ll likely take more than a good performance to topple them this weekend.

MOTORING 19

Toyota revamps its popular Etios range TOYOTA has enhanced its Etios range with the addition of the Sprint model and some upgrades to the models in the range. Available in both hatchback and sedan versions, the Etios is a regular feature on the Top 10 sales list. A total of 12 768 units was sold in the 2016 calendar year. “The Etios represents one of the core models for Toyota, and has proven popular with a wide variety of customers. The pay-off line ‘Here to make you smile’ represents what Etios is all about: simple rewarding motoring and with the most recent styling, spec and safety upgrades, it is set to continue,” said Glenn Crompton, Vice President of Marketing. Sprint model The “Sprint” model is the newest kid-on-theblock in the Etios range. The Sprint model replaces the previous midgrade ‘Xs’ offering and brings with it a number of unique attributes. The key change point is the new front bumper design, incorporating a large lower air dam as its main focal point. The lower air dam stretches the entire front width and features integrated fog lamps with sculpted bezels. Subtle graining has been applied to lend an air of quality. The lower grille is fashioned in matching black and utilises sharp horizontal slats to reinforce the muscular theme. The upper radiator grille employs a distinctive wing-like motif, with the Toyota ellipse at its centre and a broad chrome “brow” forming the upper border. The rear also receives styling tweaks in order to form a cohesive design. The rear bumper incorporates an elegant lower crease line accentuating the profile – flowing from the outer corners and blending into the number plate recess. The revised bumper treatment bumps up the overall length by 109mm (hatch) and 104mm (sedan). Adding additional visual flair are new twinspoke 15-inch alloy wheels fitted with 185/60R15 rubber and a carbon-fibre-inspired Sprint badge.

Three facades, singular DNA The entry-level Xi derivative retains its current styling, with the addition of a colour-coded grille with chrome accents, and continues to offer a strong focus on value. The Sprint model occupies the “middle ground” and offers increased comfort and convenience specification to compliment the refreshed exterior styling. Completing the triple play, is the Cross model (available in hatchback only), with its distinctive “urban-adventurer” cladding and bespoke exterior styling. All models have also received an upgrade to interior tactile elements, creating a greater feeling of solidity. The trilogy is underpinned by the same chassis and drivetrain configuration. On the suspension front, a Macpherson strut design is adopted for the front. Shock absorber anti-dust performance is enhanced, which in turn benefits shock absorber longevity in dusty regions. A torsion-beam-type suspension is adopted for the rear, augmented by a reinforcement brace to ensure handling stability. Overall the dampening system is tuned to achieve a supple, mild ride comfort that confidently allows traversing of bumps in the road surface.

Engine The Etios is powered by a 1.5 litre four cylinder power unit, producing 66kW at 5 600rpm and 132Nm at 3 000rpm. An outstanding characteristic of this engine is its free-revving nature and good low-speed torque delivery. The engine incorporates the following technologies in order to enhance its performance: . Oil-jet technology for piston cooling . Forged crankshaft and connecting rod to achieve excellent durability . A resin intake manifold is adopted, with the aim of realising a lightweight structure . Electronically-controlled throttle to achieve optimal engine management at all times and enhance fuel efficiency and drivability . A hydraulic compound-type engine mount is used for the right engine mount to achieve both excellent ride comfort and low vibration when idling . An engine mount with a dynamic damper is adopted for the left engine mount to reduce gear noise, thus achieving low noise and vibration during driving. The engine is paired with a 5-speed manual transmission driving the front wheels. Fuel consumption is stated as 5.9 litres per 100 kilometres for the sedan and 6.0 litres per 100

= The Toyota Etios is available in both hatch back and sedan iterations. PHOTOS: SUPPLIED kilometres for the hatchback. CO2 emissions are kept equally low with 138 and 136g/km respectively. Peace of mind On the passive safety front, occupants are protected by Driver and Passenger airbags. The active safety specification list includes ABS, EBD, seatbelts with pre-tensioner and force limiter, as well as ISOFIX provision. A full quota of headrests is provided with rear passengers also receiving a 3-point centre seatbelt across all models. All Etios models come with a 2-year/30 000 kilometre service plan, backed by a 3-year/100 000 kilometre warranty. Service intervals are set at 10 000 kilometres. Model lineup and pricing

Schools unite for basketball revival REPORTER

The two organisers and co-founders of WSSF, Chuma Kimberley and Siyanda Jemsana, have been working tirelessly since 2015 to help children through sport and team building initiatives. Though it has been a trying process, they have been able to change kids’ lives despite parents regularly failing to lend their support and children who end up losing faith in themselves. The event was flooded with supporters. Representatives from the University of Fort Hare (UFH), Timberwolves Club and Vula Mazibuko all travelled to Port Elizabeth to support the initiative. Participating teams from the Nelson Mandela Bay included Geminiyes, Expandables, Comets and Khwezi Lomso High School, to name a few.

Lawson Brown also participated in the tournament and showed off their skills on the WESTERN Suburbs Support Forum (WSSF) court. hosted a Revival of Eastern Cape Basketball The WSSF Girls’ u/18 team took first place Tournament at Lawson Brown High School in their category, while second place went to on April 29. WSSF Chairperson Chuma Kimberley said, “I was so overwhelmed by the atmosphere, the support and love that the people of PE showed us and their kids in the scorching heat. This is our second tournament after the rugby tournament last December, and it proves that we are still growing. “It only takes one person to change a child’s life and that is something that we will continue striving for until our goals are reached. We want to reach deep into the impoverished areas in townships where kids do not even know what is like to kick an actual soccer ball.” Kimberley added that they cannot do that alone. “We need the parents to come on board and for private companies and the government to assist in taking our kids off the streets and onto the sports fields. How can we fight crime and drug abuse while the major stakeholders do not assist the men on the ground who are actually doing the work? Some of the learners who participated in the Revival of Eastern Cape Basketball Tournament that We love what we do and we are doing it for took place at Lawson Brown High School on April 29.
