Ex radio station employee investigated for fraud LIZEKA TANDWA AN employee at a local radio station has been dismissed and allegations of fraud to the tune of nearly R1 million are being investigated against the former staff member.

Kingfisher FM have confirmed that the woman, who was an administrative clerk, pleaded guilty in a disciplinary hearing to misusing company funds which led to her dismissal. Since the former staff member has not been charged by the Police yet, she cannot be named.

This comes amidst rumours of staff being demotivated due to not receiving their salaries on time and concerns over the financial state of the station.

Kingfisher FM General Manager, Alan Ahlfeldt, said, “With the first irrefutable evidence of misconduct, allegations were presented to the individual and she was suspended on full pay. At the disciplinary hearing, the individual acknowledged guilt. She was summarily dismissed in accordance with labour legislation. As a result of the evidence, a charge was laid against the individual with the SAP,” said Ahlfeldt According to a reliable source who wished to remain anonymous, the accused was solely in charge of the company’s business accounts.

Police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, said they could confirm that a charge of fraud had been laid by Kingfisher FM against one of their employees.

“The case is currently being investigated by our Fraud and Financial Crimes Unit. So far there have not been any arrests,” said Janse van Rensburg.

According to the source, the suspect is a wellknown representative of the Kingfisher FM brand and allegedly misappropriated almost R1 million from the station.

Ahlfeldt said they were currently in the process of appointing a national auditing firm to conduct a thorough forensic audit in order to ascertain the extent of their financial situation.

SA’s first motorsport extravaganza launches in PE NELSON Mandela Bay’s top 100 motoring companies converged with media and esteemed guests at the Boardwalk Casino Conference Centre in Port Elizabeth to take part in the launch of a much-anticipated motorsport extravaganza that is due to take place from December 10th till 13th.

Police warn of crime hotspot at Kempston, Harrower Roads LIZEKA TANDWA POLICE have started handing out pamphlets to motorists warning them about an increase in car vandalism at the corner of Kempston and Harrower Roads near the Life Mercantile Hospital, which are well known crime hotspots.

Police Spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, said criminals in the area are now targeting female drivers and stealing their jewellery, handbags and cellphones while waiting at the busy intersection.

“We have been inundated with reports by female drivers whose belongings had been stolen in the area. We urge motorists to be careful while waiting at the intersection and keep vigilant of anyone suspicious approaching your car.”

Janse van Rensburg said while they are now openly patrolling the area to deter criminals, they are warning motorists to keep their doors and windows closed in the area.

“These criminals snatch the motorist’s property while the car has come to a halt and then they run off through the Durban Road and the Holland Park area. We are investigating several cases.

“We plead with motorists to ensure they also protect themselves and their property.”

Rene Scheepers on Facebook reported a black male with white “painted” face, who tried to grab her friend’s necklace while they were standing at the robot at Mercantile Hospital.

Another Facebook follower, Larné Delport, said she had also been a victim when an unidentified person tried to open her passenger door at the Kemspton road robot. “Luckily it was locked. When I asked what they wanted he replied, ‘a lift’, lol chancers,” she said.

More cases of card fraud LIZEKA TANDWA ANOTHER person has come forward claiming that she is a victim of card fraud after a report by the PE Express last week over the ongoing problem of bank and credit card fraud in the Metro.

Lindelwa Eugenia Dinga, who banks with African Bank, said she was defrauded of around R7 000 in December. She said there needed to be more security checks by banks to ensure against criminal behaviour. She has no idea how the fraudsters got hold of her banking details.

Dinga said she was a victim of a similar case as of that of Xolisile Trongo who had been defrauded of R3000 from his credit card in January and suspected it was an inside job.

PE Express reported last week that Trongo, who also banks with African Bank, said he was awakened by an SMS notice on January 18, stating that he had withdrawn an amount of R1 169.

“The first thing I did was locate my wallet. I could not believe it, because my card was still in my wallet,” Trongo, a barman at Walmer Country Club, said.

The next day, another R1 594 was withdrawn from his account before he could alert his bank of the prob-

lem.

Trongo said where as he usually received notification detailing where and when he had withdrawn money from his account, he had received no confirmation of location when the money was stolen from his card.

African Bank has since reimbursed both Trongo and Dinga.

Dinga said while she appreciates African Bank returning her money, she needed to know who the culprits were so the situation could be averted.

“Who is to say that these criminals won’t use my card again? How did they get my information and why can’t these people be found?” said a distraught Dinga.

African Bank media spokesperson, Louise Brugman, said credit card fraud and theft remain an industry wide problem saying, “The bank generally reimburses clients when they are victims of fraud, if the investigation outcome is in favour of the customer.” . PE Express reported last week that no comment could be obtained from African Bank at time of going to print. This was, however, not due to any fault of African Bank, as emails sent to them for comment was not addressed correctly.

HEARING AID ACOUSTICIAN

Parents need to identify school governors for SGB elections IN view of the forthcoming SGB elections in March 2015, parent communities should identify suitable candidates to serve their schools as governors for the next three years.

This is one of the messages that the local branch of the National Association of School Governing Bodies wants to get across to parents as part of their recently launched initiative, in association with churches, to restore the moral values of learners in schools, amongst other aims.

The recommend that candidates should be persons of integrity who are respected parents in the community. Ideally they should possess the skills and knowledge to deal with, amongst others, budgets and finance, knowledge of the maintenance of buildings and grounds and appointment of staff.

They must be prepared to adopt a constitution, sign a code of conduct and adhere to it and support the principal and staff in carrying out their professional responsibilities.

The SGB promotes the best interests of the school and strive to ensure its development

through the provision of quality education for all learners at the school. They must also ssist in raising funds for the school.

What Governing Body members can’t ex­ pect is that they will be able to: (a) Get paid or rewarded for their efforts; (b) Take over the running of the school’s finances; (c) Be the principal’s boss; (d) Fire the teachers they don’t like; (e) Sit in on team selections; (f) Decide which pupils should have which teachers, or which teachers will teach which classes; (g) Sit in on classes to see how teachers teach; (h) Get a discount on school fees; or (i) Decide which children from the community will get into the school. . Hope Jones Ambassador raises money for Daycare Centre REPORTER A PORT Elizabeth primary schoolgirl has shown true initiative by raising money to provide a gift to children with special needs.

Inge du Plessis (13) from Summerwood Primary School managed to raise a substantial amount of money for charity by making and selling bracelets to classmates.

These funds were donated to the APD Daycare Centre for Children with Disabilities.

Du Plessis is one of the Ambassadors involved in the ABC4DBC Programme (Able-Bodied Children championing the cause of Disabled-Bodied Children) for The Hope Jones Foundation that aims to enable and empower children with physical and mental disabilities to reach their full potential.

The APD Daycare Centre (Association for the Physically Disabled) was established seven years ago to provide physical therapy and education for 28 children between the ages of 1 and 8 years.

“We would like to thank Inge and the Hope Jones Foundation for their continuous support. The money raised

by Inge was used to provide snacks, cool drinks and sweets for the children. And what was left was used to contribute to a staff Christmas breakfast. Keep up the good work. It’s good to know that there are young people out there that care for the needs of the community,” said Karin Jakober, principal of APD.

Be the Change campaign helps feed the needy LIZEKA TANDWA A brand new initiative which is inspiring citizens’ action, the Be The Change campaign, is attracting more and more local people to make a positive impact in their communities.

Elaine Watson from a local Non-Profit Organisation, Love Story, launched the Be The Change campaign and said that the initiative allows members of the public to give toward its feeding schemes and in this way guarantees that their money is going to a noble cause.

“The way it works is that members of the public pay R100 per month to Love Story which runs feeding schemes across the region and serves about of 50 000 meals per month. Campaigners will then be given a sticker disc for their cars to signify that they

are part of the campaign, as well as tickets with details of Love Story soup kitchens to hand out to any person begging. Instead of giving away small change which many people don’t like to do, one would then hand out the ticket so that the person can access a soup kitchen in his/her vicinity”.

Love Story operates to restore hope to the hopeless in our city; among its many projects, it runs feeding schemes in various suburbs and areas of the metro,” said Watson.

Watson said the Be the Change was born locally after it had been proved successful in Cape Town. “A local doctor and good friend of Love Story approached us to do the same.”

Be The Change mainly concentrates in the city centre, Walmer, and Newton Park areas. “We are faced with destitute people on a daily basis in PE and we believe that the public who have the

means should do something to make a difference. Over the past two years that our feeding schemes have been running we have seen many lives changed.

For the homeless to see that there are people who care about them and who notice them restores hope in them they never had.

“We’ve seen people placed in jobs and come off the street; we’ve seen people reunite with families and we’ve seen people come off addictions - all this because we as an organisation believe in them and commit to feeding them everyday; they are given a new lease on life and given new motivation,” she added.

Watson said they still need more people to give back and help grow their initiative.

G&S stages ‘That’s Our Song’ for Valentine’s THE G&S Valentine’s Cabaret is celebrating its 7th year of bringing love and laughter to PE audiences over the Valentine’s week with their 2015 offering “That’s Our Song”.

“That’s Our Song” will be held on February 12th, 13th and 14th at the Savoy Theatre starting

at 7.30pm. Tickets cost R70, or R500 for a table of 8, and seating is cabaret style for patrons who choose to bring along their own snacks.

Organisers said this is the first time G&S has asked its patrons and friends for input and some of those brilliant suggestions have been included

in the show. Add to that a multi-talented cast of 20 singers, dancers led by the dynamic Andrea Morris, and loads of fabulous songs, a great night’s entertainment is guaranteed.

‘Sticky Fingers ­ A tribute to the Rolling Stones’ at Old Grey REPORTER CENTRESTAGE teams up with Barnyard Theatre entrepreneur and producer extraordinaire Duck Chowles to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the show which kicked things off for the ex-Eastern Cape musician, namely ‘Sticky Fingers – A tribute to the Rolling Stones’.

“We will concentrate on their pre-1980’s repertoire, when they were still a band, before they became a brand,” Chowles explained.

Chowles, who now lives between Johannesburg and Cape Town, enthused, “I am looking forward to returning to my roots with a rocking tribute to the band that I used to dream of - when I was a child - living on a farm - in The Eastern Cape.”

hangs and a long wheelbase of 2,420 mm.

Thanks to these dimensions the turning circle of the up! is an unusually compact 9.8 metres.

Use of space inside the car is exceptionally good, with space for four adults. This is due to the wheelbase, which is one of the longest in the segment, combined with an engine that is mounted well forward. The 251-litre boot is also significantly larger than is typical in this class. When the rear seat is fully folded, cargo space increases to 951 litres.

The up! has a large bootlid, which extends right down to the bumper. This so-called hybrid bootlid consists of three basic layers. Its outer skin consists of a transparent glass element. The bootlid is opened by pressing a button in the handle beneath the Volkswagen logo.

Powering the up! is a new generation of three-cylinder petrol engine with outputs of 55 kW. Standstill to 100 km/h takes 13.2 seconds and top speed is 171 km/h. This engine returns a combined fuel consumption of 4.7 litres per 100km while emitting 108 g/km of carbon dioxide.

The aluminium five-speed gearbox in the

up! was specially tuned for the its three-cylinder petrol engine. The gearbox weighs just 25 kg including transmission fluid, which makes it one of the world’s lightest gearbox in this torque class (the gearbox also comes with indicators for the recommended gear and the engaged gear in the instrument cluster).

Two derivatives are available: Take up! and Move up!. Both are competitively priced and offer a high level of standard equipment. A raft of safety features including ABS and four airbags are available as standard features.

What a year this might just be!

“A YEAR LIKE NO OTHER,” said the TV ad at the exact moment load-shedding ended last Saturday – an omen perhaps? An omen for good things on the way for cricket’s Proteas and rugby’s Springboks to name but a few major sports activities SA teams will be involved in in 2015?

Why not? In cricket and rugby in particular, the signs for a year of triumph have seldom looked as bright as the World Cups on the playing fields of England and Australasia draw near.

Can it happen again for cricket – those dark, bitter memories when things fell apart dramatically for the Proteas in the 1999 World Cup semifinals, with even greater humiliation to follow on home soil in 2003, when South Africa were shot out in the very first round when the teams got down to the tournament’s nitty-gritty? There is every reason to hope not. The tried and tested reliability of ODI skipper AB de Villiers and the Test captain, Hashim Amla, are hugely important factors. Indeed, the most encouraging aspect of this South African side is the regular confidence with which these two occupy the crease in addition to their interac-

tion as decision-makers.

The depth of their experience is phenomenal. It’s a rainy day when Amla doesn’t come up with a decent score; while the record books show that De Villiers has scored no fewer than 7 459 runs in 129 ODIs at an average of more than 52, including three centuries, two of which came back-to-back. The Proteas, too, are blessed with an enviable balance with bat and ball. Indeed, it’s the depth of the team’s bowling and the deadly speed of the likes of Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel and Vernon Philander not to mention the guile of spinners Imran Tahir and JP Duminy among others that could tip the odds in the Proteas’ favour in the Australasianhosted tournament.

Finally, it is to the team’s special advantage that its youngest member, 20-year-old Quinton de Kock, has been passed fit. An attacking batsman who likes to go after the bowling, his presence behind the stumps as wicketkeeper is equally important or De Villiers would have had the extra burden of keeping wicket.

On the rugby front the Sharks last week, with key players Jannie du Plessis, Thomas du Toit and Willem Alberts still recovering

from injury setbacks and without the Japanbased trio of Francois Steyn, JP Pietersen and Ryan Kankowski, did well enough in defeating French champions, Toulon. While the 12-10 victory was by no means the finished article, there was enough there to suggest that, in addition to the KZN franchise’s good Super Rugby prospects, the players named above are likely to give the Springboks an even more solid look in the Australasia-based Rugby World Cup later in the year.

Springbok coach, Heyneke Meyer, no doubt will be hoping scrumhalf Cobus Reinach’s stomach muscle injury is not too serious for he and Pat Lambie must be early favourites to fill the crucial halfback link between forwards and backs. Building a team round a Reinach-Lambie axis could put the Boks in the pound seats come the Britishbased Word Cup later in the year. Sentiment must play no part. If current captain, Jean de Villiers, is back to his best, pick him.

Equally, if he is no longer the player he was, leave him out. Remember, too, there is young Handre Pollard if Lambie doesn’t work out. In selection, only the best must be allowed to survive!

ZSPORTS WORLD: MICHAEL ZOETMULDER

It’s Spar River Mile time this weekend 91 years old and going strong – that’s the Spar River Mile, Africa’s oldest open water swimming event which takes place this weekend at Sundays River.

Two days of sports and entertainment is in store for families from around the Eastern Cape as the Spar River Mile Festival kicks off on Saturday morning with the Wimpy 5km Family Fun Run and is followed by an exciting new event in the Eastern Cape, the Dynamic Express Services Triathlon team relay – the best and easiest way to get into the sport of triathlon.

As the incoming tide starts to push on Saturday afternoon we go into the swim events which include the Speedo wetsuit double mile, the disabled mile and the family half-mile.

Local PE reggae group, The Brothers, will open the entertainment on the stage before well known SA singer Heinz Winckler comes on.

Sunday morning will start with the Wakaberry Kids races across the river, to be followed by the Celebrity swim which

will include some of the Kings Rugby stars, Mr Port Elizabeth and Mrs Mzanzi.

The Spar Ladies Mile starts at 1.15pm and is followed by the Men’s Mile at 2.15pm.

World renowned magician and mentalist Larry Soffer takes to the stage at 3pm to end off the 91st River Mile.

Packet-pickup for all pre-registered participants takes place today (Wednesday) at the NMB Aquatics Boardroom, Newton Park swimming pool complex – entry from Worracker Street only (not from poolside).

Jendamark Bellbuoy challenge Entries for the 5km Nelson Mandela Bay Bellbuoy Challenge, sponsored by Jendamark, will be closing on Wednesday, February 18 ahead of the race on Saturday, February 21 from Pollok Beach.

A total of R21 000 in cash prize money is up for grabs with unique Bellbuoy trophies, constructed from wire and beads by a local Walmer crafter, for the age group winners in the 40-50, 50-60 and 60+ age groups (male and female).

Dít het die rasieleier-span van die Nelson Mandela Metropolitaanse Universiteit (NMMU) verlede week bewys toe hulle as wenners van die nasionale kampioenskappe vir universiteits-rasieleiers gekroon is.

Dié span van 22 studente en choreograaf Nicki-Ann Rayepen het die titel weggeraap van ses ander universiteitspanne, wat in Potchefstroom bymekaar gekom het vir die eerste jaar van dié kampioenskappe.

“Dit het fantasties gevoel om die trofee terug te bring na NMMU, maar dit was selfs beter omdat ons die eerste wenners was,” het ’n opgewonde Rayepen vertel. “Ons is so dankbaar. Dit is regtig ongelooflik.”

Rayepen het ingetree as spanbestuurder en choreograaf toe die span in 2014 gestig is.

“Ons was die enigste span van die Oos-Kaap wat deelgeneem het, en vir ons lede is dit net so belangrik en mededingend soos sport. Die erkenning wat hulle met dié oorwinning ontvang het, beteken baie vir elkeen van ons.”

Sy het vroeg in die kompetisie reeds gedink hulle gaan met die trofee terugkeer, het Rayepen met trots vertel. “Die NMMU-span was beslis die leiers van die eerste ronde, en hoewel almal uitgeblink het in die tweede ronde, was ons roetine byna perfek.”

Nou lê die Varsity-beker om die draai vir dié wenspan. “Die toernooi begin volgende Maandag en drie wedstryde sal op televisie uitgesaai word, wat toeskouers en ondersteuners ’n kans sal bied om die span in aksie te sien.

“Ons hoofdoel vir die toernooi is egter net om die toeskouers te vermaak en die gees aan te blaas.” – Odette Kemp

Victory races on Valentine’s Hot Rods

REPORTER THE next race event will take place on February 14, as the first of six regional rounds at Victory Raceway, Victoria Drive, Walmer.

Gates open at 3pm and racing starts 6pm.

Entry fee for adults costs R50 and track parking is R20 per vehicle.

Classes competing are Beginners, Jnr Hot Rods, 1660’s, 2.1 Modifieds, Super Six, Hot Rods and American Saloons.

Organisers said braai facilities will be available, as well as foodstalls.

The Addo Elephant Trail Run will put trail runners’ mental and physical resilience to the test with a 44km or 76km trail run through the vast Addo Elephant National Park.

The Addo Elephant Trail Run was first held in 2005 and originally consisted of two events - a 100 mile (161km) and a 50 mile (80.4km) trail run. The 100 mile run was a 24-hour race that saw participants kick-off their run in the dark, and run through to the following night.

Sheena O’Keeffe from Free Spirit Adventures said, the trail takes runners through spectacular scenery nestled in the heart of the Eastern Cape, including some serious climbs up onto the plateau, and a number of picturesque river crossings.

“The checkpoints are known to be some of the best to be found in trail running. Manned by friendly volunteers and stocked with runners’ favourite foods, they give each athlete a chance to take a break, re-fuel and interact before they continue.”

Fortunate runners will also catch glimpses of various animals, including antelope, elephants, ostriches, leopard tortoises, and plenty of birds. The route follows sections of private farmland, as well as sections of the Park that are not generally open to the public.
