Besoekers stroom na ‘nuwe’ oseanarium ILSE KRIGE DIE opening van die nuwe geriewe by die Bayworld-oseanarium in Somerstrand dié naweek het die verwagtinge oortref. Die pawiljoene was stampvol soos groot en klein gestroom het na die eerste vertonings nadat die oseanarium van die aktiwiteite ’n ruk lank opgeskort het vir vernuwings aan die geboue. Robyn Greyling, hoofkurator van lewende diere by Bayworld, het gesê die openings-naweek se toegangspryse is spesiaal laag gehou. Die gewone tariewe geld weer van van-dag: R35 vir volwassenes en R25 vir kinders. Die nuwe pikkewynuitstalling met sy onderwaterbesigtigingsvensters en die akwariumgalery met silindriese tenks vir tropiese visse is nuutjies wat groot belangstelling gewek het. Church joins abortion poster cleanup LIZEKA TANDWA MEMBERS of the New Apostolic Church held a clean-up campaign on Saturday, to rid the city of the illegal abortion posters. The congregation’s youth leader, Brent Scharneck, said they decided to do the clean-up in support of the campaign launched by members of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) Building Inspectorate who have decided to address the situation in their private capacities. Apart from rolling up their sleeves and removing the posters from buildings in the area from Russell Road towards Albany Road via Govan Mbeki Avenue, they have also created a facebook page to use as a communication

PE Express spoke to one of the backdoor abortion “doctors”: A man answered the call and said he would be able to assist with the abortion for a price of R450 on a 6month pregnant woman. Eldery make pretty things for little things LIZEKA TANDWA CREATIVE senior citizens are making the world a happier place for needy kids by using their hands to create craft works as part of the “Pretty Things for Little Things” national competition. Algoa Bay Council for the Aged, as well as the Zizamele Centre, have organised senior citizens of the Walmer township community to participate in the national senior citizens competition. Zizamele Community Worker, Zuki Keswa, said they had been working on the project for over 6 months – partly to keep the elderly busy in a creative way and to also provide toys and much needed handmade crafts for kids. “We started participating in the ‘Pretty Things for Little Things’ competition 4-years ago. This project provides the elderly with activ-

ities. They have a busy schedule and also they know that their work is for a good cause,” said Keswa. One of the senior citizens, Thozamile Spielman 73, made guitars out of recycled tins, scrap wood, old clothes and wool, “I love creating these toys. Many of the products I made, such as the guitar,come from skills I learnt when I was a boy when I used to build toy cars from scrap metal,” said Spielman. “Pretty Things for Little Things” organisers from Age-in-Action said they were proud of the response they had received from the different communities of the elderly in the country. “This competition shows that the elderly are still contributors to society. They use their talents and recycled goods to make a variety of items for kids who normally do not receive any gifts during Christmas,” said Age-in-Action CEO, Ingrid Cupido. With the Eastern Cape producing last year’s national winners, Keswa said the Walmer Township group had over 20senior citizens in the competition with some as old as 80 years of age. Sponsored by ShopriteCheckers, Cupido said the provincial winner would receive R2 500 for the first prize and the national winner would get R6 000 worth of shopping vouchers from the sponsors.

PE EXPRESS | WEDNESDAY 11 SEPTEMBER 2013 BELIA SCOTT IN 2007 a very nervous mom came to the Lorraine Play and Learn Centre and asked if we would take her little boy, Bradley Akers, of 3 months into our care, but she added that he has a rare disease (arthrogryposis - walking disability) and that he would never be able to walk. Over the years with us he accomplished so much and with inspiration from his teachers and carers, he turned out to inspire us all over the years. He showed all the doctors after all the operations that he would walk someday. We at Lorraine Play and Learn Centre saw him grow and develop and saw him as our Little Angel, who would find a way to do everything on his own. He leopard crawled to move from one place to the other until one day in 2012 he surprised us all. It was an ordinary day... He came to school happy and laughing with his friends when all of a sudden he just shouted and said LOOK!LOOK! We all looked and what did we see? Here he was taking his first steps and

Workshop and competition for women writers REPORTER ASPIRING female writers are invited to the People Opposing Women’s Abuse (POWA) workshops at NMMU on Saturday. The workshops lead to POWA’s annual National Writing Anthology Project, which helps elevate female aspiring writers in the media industry, bringing awareness to different issues affecting women. According to POWA, the NMMU Missionvale campus will be host to many female aspiring writers who will be mentored by journalist Kazeka Mashologu Kuse to ensure a better chance in the National Writing Anthology Project. “This workshop is for all women. The workshops, as well as the competition,seek to reach out to as many potential writers as possible with the aim of helping aspiring women writers by providing means designed to support female writers in their endeavours,” said Kuse. The workshop is open to all women and begins at 8.30am. “Only the first 25 aspiring writers to arrive at NMMU will partake in the workshop,” she said.

Kuse believes the project will open doors for aspiring writers, columnists or journalists the same way it opened doors for her. “My first personal essay for the POWA writing project in 2009 got published and won in its category, which got noticed by the O, The Oprah magazine, and put my writing on the national space,” said Kuse. The POWA annual women’s writing anthology project began in 2006 purely as a competition for aspiring female writers,and transformed into a women’s writing project. Charmaine’s Big Break Legacy dream doesn’t reach the boil PORT Elizabeth’s Charmaine Kleynhans became the first contestant to be voted off SABC2’s The Big Break Legacy entrepreneurial TV reality show recently. The winner of the show will receive a R5million boost to their business but Kleynhans is no longer part of the exciting battle. However, Kleynhans (49) – whose businesses makes kettles that boil water without electricity, gas or making a fire – did not feel she had let herself down. “It was tough and the task required us to come up with an innovative idea to sell hair weaves at a Johannesburg taxi rank. Things just didn’t go right for me and it was a disappointing day. To be honest I was totally out of my comfort zone.

“However, I don’t feel I failed either my team or myself because I was actually doing my best.” When Kleynhans first entered the house her young daughter gave her a box with inspirational notes for each day she was on the show, which she could draw from when needed. “I didn’t manage to draw too many notes,” she said wistfully. Kleynhans is determined to continue with her innovative kettle business and help make a difference in the lives of many South Africans. She added that the show was certainly hotting up and,making for compulsive watching: “It will make interesting viewing, but I’m glad I’m going out with dignity because I think a lot of them will lose that.”

Kleynhans is disappointed she won’t be given the chance to join the other contestants when they go overseas to record two episodes in the Netherlands and one in London. It is believed to be the first time a South Africanbased show would do some tasks abroad. •Big Break Legacy is broadcast on SABC 2 at 9pm on Saturdays and re-broadcast at 12.30 on SABC1 and NCBC on Sundays.

‘PE Express’ staff pampered ‘for doing good’ THE PE Express recently held a drive to collect books for less privileged people from all over the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro. These books, which were donated to the newspaper by our loyal and supportive readers, were donated and distributed to various schools and other organisations over the past few weeks. After reading about this initiative, three ladies from businesses in Port Elizabeth offered to treat PE Express staff members to a morning of pampering and a mini make-over in an attempt to “pay forward” their good deed to others. “Your commitment to others in the community has not gone unnoticed! Thank you to the PE Express team,” said Leanda Mackay from

Landi’s Beauty Salon, who did the beauty treatments. The three lucky recipients – Erika Steyn (sales representative), Jeanette Kleyngeld (tele consultant) and Tanya van Zyl (online editor) – each received a skin analysis, facial, hair wash and styling and make-up. The hair was done by Ronel from Hair Zone; the skincare was done and make-up (Avroy Shlain) supplied by Sonneke Lategan,and Leanda from Landi’s did the make-up and skin analysis. Afterwards Yolandé Bezuidenhout from Malaika Photography took photos of the recipients. We would like to thank all the ladies involved for the lovely pampering session.

Acclaimed Cape Town artist presents workshop in Bay LEONIE Brown, the multi-award-winning Cape Town artist and owner of LifeArt School and Studio in Melkbosstrand, Cape Town,is once again gracing the PE shores with an art workshop from September 20 to 28. Her last workshop in June earlier this year was a huge success and students were enthralled by her entertaining and fun way of sharing her vast knowledge and experience with them. The workshop will be divided into three separate but connected courses,starting with a three-day course dealing with basics. With this course Leonie will focus on the the importance of getting it right from the beginning and getting the basics right.

Here she will also teach how to loosen up style, tonal values, the importance of light and dark, Munsell colour theory and much more. Workshop two, on September 25 and 26, will deal with more advanced techniques using Grisaille, Verdachio, Ebauche and Chiascuro. Here Leonie will demonstrate portrait painting techniques used by the Dutch Masters,as well as a more impressionistic style using Alla prima, impasto and Palette knife techniques. Workshop three will be a one-day workshop on September 28 with a live demonstration,followed by the students doing a painting using Leonie’s unique techniques which include an impressionistic approach, work-

ing “looser”, using palette knife and impasto brush work. The cost of the workshop is R650 per day with a 5% reduction if two or more courses are booked. All on board for Tourism Month NATIONAL Tourism Month was launched on board the Jester last week - and cruising around the bay was a fantastic tourism activity in itself while creating awareness of future activities and attractions. Tourism Month is a celebration held in September on an annual basis to emphasize the importance of tourism to the economy of South Africa. The focus of Tourism Month 2013 by NMBT will be to encourage and educate local products and citizens of the tourism offerings of the destination. Pearson and Collegiate through to finals of FNB Alexander Playhouse Festival PEARSON High School and Collegiate High School are once again through to the Provincial finals of the prestigious FNB Alexander Playhouse Festival, which will be held in East London at the Guild Theatre in October. Both schools made the finals last year, with Pearson winning the Lynette Alexander Floating Trophy and a R10 000 cash award for their production of Exhibit X. This year their production of Frenzy, penned by their drama educator, Linda-Louise Swain, deals with Forbidden Initiation, the frenzy of mob mentality and the dire consequences. The same cast who performed Exhibit X are now matric subject drama learners and will perform Frenzy. The Collegiate High School production, Kindred Spirits, has also been penned by their

drama educator, Anabel Longe, and incorporates the writings of Ingrid Jonker and Sylvia Plath. Having been selected from the initial round, they will now face eight other productions and a final three will be selected for re-performance by the Patron of the Festival and Chief Provincial Adjudicator, Deon Opperman. After an individual workshop with each of these three productions, Opperman will present the awards at the Gala evening on October 12, following their performances. The Festival was initiated in 2010 by Deon Opperman, Multi-Award-winning SA Playwright, Director and Producer of Theatre and Television and last year FNB joined him as the major sponsors of the festival, which also offers a Best performance award of a R35 000 bursary for study.

Vyf jaar later, is hulle nie net getroud en ouers van twee jong kindertjies nie, maar het hulle ook hul droomhuis gekoop en is besig om die droom van ’n huisteater te verwesentlik. Eerskomende Sondag bied hulle hul eerste vertoning by Aster-laan 29, Sunridgepark aan met bekende Suid-Afrikaanse sangers Gerald Clark en Luna Paige wat sal optree. “Ek en Pieter het in Desember die huis wat heerlik geskik is vir onthaal, gekoop. Beide van ons hou daarvan om mense te ontvang en gesellig te kuier en ons liefde vir die skryfkuns, musiek en visuele kuns so met mense

Ek het in Stellenbosch skoolgegaan en studeer en by Protea Boekwinkel gewerk waar ek baie betrokke was met die Kunste. Pieter het ook daar studeer en skoolgehou en homself in daardie wêreld ingegooi. “Toe hy terug Baai toe getrek het, het hy Elizabeth Place begin en vertonings daar aangebied. Toe ek in 2009 ook hierheen trek het ons begin praat oor die behoefte vir so iets in die Baai,” sê Jana. Bewens die feit dat hy eienaar is van Elizabeth Place in Newtonpark, is Pieter ook onderwyser by die hoërskool Grey. Jana bedryf ’n nasorg vanuit die huis wat reg oorkant die Laerskool Sunridge geleë is. Pieter het in Port Elizabeth grootgeword, terwyl Jana op ’n plaas in Prieska haar kinderjare deurgebring het. “Beide my ouers was kunstig en het ons dikwels spesiaal Bloemfontein toe geneem vir vertonings. As kinders het ons in ons vrye tyd gesing, gedans en boeke gelees. “Pieter se familie is almal baie musikaal en kreatief en hy kan homself baie goed uitdruk in sang en skryf,” se Jana. Hulle beoog ook om later skrywers te nooi vir boekpraatjies en poësie-voorlesings. “Ons kan net 50 mense akkommodeer so dit gaan die gaste ’n ongelooflike lekker geleentheid gee om die kunstenaars in ’n gemaklike en huislike omgewing te geniet en te leer ken,” se Jana. All Trevor Noah shows have been cancelled COMEDIAN Trevor Noah has been forced to call off his sold-out season at The Boardwalk’s Vodacom Amphitheatre for medical reasons. He was due to appear at The Boardwalk from Monday (September 9) to this Sunday. “Trevor’s agents have informed us that he has had to cancel the shows due to unforeseen medical problems, which have affected his voice. His surgeon has recommended that he rest,” said The Boardwalk general manager, Brett Hoppé.

Superb Seb Scampers to Italian Victory SEBASTIAN Vettel has set 19 fastest laps, taken 40 pole positions, won 32 races and from the looks of things soon to be a fourth driver’s world title. The German has unquestionably edged significantly closer to his fourth consecutive title after winning the Italian GP. The German driver was hardly challenged at the front of the Italian GP as he romped to his sixth win of the 2013 season. He made his customary break in the first two laps of the race and seemed to control it at ease for the rest of the 53 lap race. But looks can be deceiving, however, as the Red Bull ace had to contend with several minor issues throughout the race. A heavily flat spotted tyre was the first cause of concern for the Red Bull pitwall and later in the race instruction to Vettel was to short shift in fifth and sixth gear. Pace, however, was no issue at all as Vettel effortlessly pulled away from second placed man Fernando Alonso. Felipe Massa momentarily slotted

into second place, but was efficiently overtaken by teammate Alonso who had put a gutsy move on Webber into the second chicane. The Australian looked poised to do some serious battling for the second step of the podium in the second half of the race but a similar call from the team instructed him to short shift between second and third gear. Nevertheless, Webber finished less than a second behind Alonso. Ultimately, the Tifosi didn’t quite get the victory they had hoped for, but were still left with something to cheer about as Fernando Alonso brought his scarlet Ferrari home in second place. Teammate Felipe Massa finished fourth but the rumours about his future at the Italian team continue to swirl, recently with added intensity. Several reports are suggesting that Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen will be announced as a Ferrari driver for 2014 on Wednesday. Nico Hulkenberg has also been linked with the seat.

The star of Saturday qualifying, Nico Hulkenberg, finished a welcome fifth for Sauber; a great drive from the German who is surely now primed to move to a more competitive team. Nico Rosberg finished sixth overall ahead of Daniel Ricciardo and Romain Grosjean in seventh and eighth respectively. Kimi Raikkonen, in his current Lotus guise, didn’t have a great Italian GP in terms of points. In fact, he didn’t score any points at all. An uncharacteristic clunk up the back of Sergio Perez’s McLaren forced the Finn into the pits for a new wing after only two laps had been completed. Armed with the slightly faster medium compound tyres, Raikkonen set several fastest laps but ultimately fell short of the points paying positions in eleventh. An issue with the kers system and a request to save fuel throughout the race didn’t help Raikkonen’s cause. Lewis Hamilton found himself in a similar situation as he was forced into the pitlane early in the race with a slow puncture. The 2008

world champion was able to recover to ninth place after a feisty drive through the field. Jenson Button scored the final point on offer in tenth, lamenting an incorrect choice of gear ratios. There were only two retirements from the race with the first being Paul di Resta who clouted the back of Romain Grosjean and exited the race in a pile of destroyed carbon fibre at the exit of the first chicane. Toro Rosso’s Jean-Eric Vergne bid the Italian GP adieu with what looked like engine failure on lap 15. Belgium and Italy were supposed to be the Red Bull team’s Achilles heel. Never were these two tracks to play to the strength of the prolific Sebastian Vettel, much less to his supposedly straightline-speed-challenged-car. It must be ominous then for those who fancy themselves a contender in this championship. Not only were they beaten by Vettel’s Red Bull but summarily routed. One may ask how is it possible that there are only four things that stood out in a car that costs over R600 000. Well with a not-so-average price tag, one would expect, and take it for granted, that this vehicle would perform above average and offer above average features. And the Murano certainly doesn’t disappoint. It looks good, performs well and offers a lot of features one would expect in a premium car. And with cars in this price segment being equal in what they offer, it is often the little things that add value to the buyer’s specific lifestyle needs that clinch the deal. Being a mother, always in a hurry, often with lots of bags and packages in my hands and on a strict time schedule, having the bootlid close while you are already running towards the shop or towards the driver’s seat, and a camera to see what’s behind you on those morning rush-hours in the school parking lot, are almost a basic necessity once you get used to them. And the third pedal? This is used to activate and deactive the handbrake. The Murano test driven is the 3.5i V6 4WD CVT. Interior: From outside and inside the car has a premium look. On the inside this look is certainly enhanced by the dual panel moonroof. The high-quality dash houses a sophisticated looking instrument panel with uncluttered control layout. The only fault I could find is

that the controls for the audio system and climate control look very much the same. I would have preferred a different look for each set as one often has to use peripheral vision to adjust these and if they look the same it takes longer getting used to adjusting these while on the move. The Murano offers more than adequate cargo space and if even more storage space is needed, its 60/40 split-folding rear seats drop forward to create an expanded load floor that is double in size.

Ride: The CVT automatic gearbox did sound as though it was struggling a bit between gears - but only for the first two or three gears. Once it sped up there is absolutely no moaning and groaning. For a big car, the Murano has a surprisingly sedan like drive and even parking in my favourite shopping centre’s cramped underground parking lot, was easy. Its handling and steering are sharp and the engine is quite responsive. The poor rear visibility is made up for by the camera display. RUGBY really is a funny ol’ game. Seen by experts and others in so many different lights it’s hard to believe, when all’s said and done, that it’s one and the same sport. For some reason we South Africans have a bad name. We don’t, say our critics, play an exciting game. We’re stodgy, without imagination or guile. We have big galumphs at forward to trample the opposition into submission, a couple of swift fellows among the backs to follow up long kicks and score tries – and always a flyhalf who can kick the leather off the ball. This is done in the hope the opposition will drop it and give you a knock-on scrum or miss the ball completely so one of our swifties hopefully can hold onto it and score. It’s useful if the flyhalf can also kick penalties and conversions and the occasional drop-goal. That, according to critics of the “South African way”, is how we win our games – from the Under 13s upwards. Is that so? Any Scotsman still alive who watched Hennie Muller’s 1951 Springboks make mincemeat sandwiches of Scotland at Murrayfield to the tune of 44-0, when the try was worth only three points, is likely to tell you a somewhat different tale. In those days, under the coaching of one Danie Craven, we were one of the leading thinkers of the game and – with a lapse or two here and there – so we remain. Rugby these days is an applied science. You have carefully to balance attack with defence; know when to open up, when to close down – if only for a brief period to allow your team to regroup and take a deep breath before launching a new carefully rehearsed attack. Let’s doff our communal hat then to Heyneke Meyer, who in a season and a bit is bringing

along his Springboks at a nice even pace. Yes, of course, there have been hiccups from which he and his players have emerged the wiser from those experiences. A typical example of Meyer’s strategy has revealed itself at scrumhalf. He’s made no bones about his belief that his first-choice is Fourie du Preez, despite the chains that bind him to his Japanese employers. For now he is happy to rely on Ruan Pienaar, despite that indifferent game against Argentina in Mendoza. While many were calling for Pienaar’s head, he disagreed. The result? In last weekend’s clash with the Wallabies in Brisbane, not only did his Springboks produce arguably their best performance of the Rugby Championship so far with a thoroughly convincing 38-12 victory, but Pienaar was one of the team’s standout players. So much so, that former Bok coach, Nick Mallet, singled him out for special praise. He described the team as a whole as giving “the best display by the Springboks since I began commentating on rugby for SuperSport.” And that’s quite a while now. It’s interesting to note moreover that this was the Boks’ first win in Brisbane since 1971, after seven unsuccessful attempts. But there’s much rugby still to be played in the Championship, and the toughest game so far is likely to be the clash with the All Blacks, who could be without injured captain Richie McCaw, this Saturday. From the Boks’ point of view they will need to lift their performance by several notches against the Kiwis who accounted for Argentina, going away as they say in horse-racing parlance, 28-13 last Saturday. It could be a heck of a match.

Urban Festival at Donkin this weekend THIS weekend sees a festival of activities and entertainment on the Donkin Reserve as around 1 500 participants get ready to Tackle the City for Charity in the 2013 Urban Run hosted by the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA). The event will be held from Saturday at 9am to 6pm and Sunday from 7am to 2pm. The Kingfisher FM main stage will feature live bands such as Forget the Fall, Three for Freedom, Shackle and Sherry, Perfect Horizon, Sovereign, Seunewees, Troubadours and Life Lyne with solo artists Faye Gatley and Clair Venn also in attendance. All about great fun and friendship team building, the Muck Run is hosted at Bushpig Adventures and has various batch starts. The Kids’ Muck Dash is for kids 11 years and under and will be between 1km and 2km and starts at 2pm on Saturday, November 9. In order to cope with the demand for the event, two adult sessions have been arranged: the first is 3pm on the Saturday and the second is 10am on Sunday 10th. Muckers can either enter solo or in teams of 4. All participants entering before the end of October receives a Muck Run t-shirt. The Rotary Club of Port Elizabeth has been assigned to manage the charity of the event. At the winter Muck Run, clothing donations were donated to Jerusalem Ministries. For the summer version, participants and spectators are encouraged to donate old clothing, blankets and/or shoes to the nominated charity which will be Cheshire Cleary Park. Participants are also encouraged to run in old attire and then donate all of this to charity after the event. Entries for the Muck Run are available on www.muckrun.co.za and are expected to sell out quickly.
