ELECTRICITY: NUMBERS NEEDED

Call on ratepayers to supply details REPORTER

T

HE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) is calling on account holders to provide their prepaid electricity numbers urgently in cases where prepaid electricity numbers do not reflect on their municipal statements to avoid the blockage of their accounts. This follows a poor response by affected ratepayers to messages that the city has communicated through account holder statements since last year. The NMBM spokesperson, Mthubanzi Mniki, said while some ratepayers have been proactive in paying their rates, irrespective of this problem, some have taken advantage. “If the prepaid electricity number does not appear on an account holder’s statement, it becomes a challenge for the city to recover the debt.” The NMBM mayoral committee member for budget and treasury, Councillor Retief Odendaal, said that the call is centred around the administration’s commitment to transform Nelson Mandela Bay into a well-run city. “This can only be realised if there is unity of purpose between the city and its ratepayers. “Consistent payment of rates and services is at the centre of achieving such a commitment.

We call upon ratepayers to work with us on this to avoid unnecessary inconvenience,” Odendaal said. He added that the city is committed to improve the collection rate significantly to speed up service delivery. “While protecting the poorest of the poor through the Assistance to the Poor Programme (ATTP), those that can pay must pay consistently. This gives us the power to create a safe city that is inclusive in its approach of opening up opportunities.” Mniki explained that the blockages are expected to start next month. “When an account is blocked, and the city finds that your account is up to date, you will only be expected to pay a reconnection fee. “If it is discovered that a ratepayer’s account is in arrears, he will be expected to pay the amount owed or make a payment arrangement before an account is reopened. “A connection fee will also have to be paid. At the end of May, the collection rate of the city stood at 93.1%.”

Metro patrons applaud bravery of firefighters “PEOPLE underestimate the importance of firefighters and rescue workers and we only really understand how critical they are when we are faced with losing everything.” These were the words of the Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor, Athol Trollip. Delivering a keynote address at the Metro Firefighters’ thank-you lunch, held at the Grand Hotel last week, he applauded the firefighters for the bravery they displayed four weeks ago when raging fires destroyed homes and a number of buildings at Woodridge College. At least half of the college burnt down when the school buildings engulfed in flames, but the long battle by the firefighters helped to keep the flames at bay while learners and residence staff were evacuated unharmed. “We were really lucky in these fires. When I consider what happened to Knysna and Plettenburg Bay and other areas, we were actually extremely fortunate. “Fires are devastating. Thirteen houses were lost there. When you lose your house you lose everything. I think our firefighters did an extraordinary job to prevent more losses,” Trollip said. He added that the assessment of the loss could not yet be calculated. Angelique Minnie, who has been a firefighter for 19 years, said being a firefighter was a calling and one needed to have a passion for it. “I have wanted to do something that saves lives since I was little. I love my job, and it is an honour to receive recognition for the work we do. The acting director of operations, Nilton Whiteboy, explained the stressful and tough working conditions that the firefighters had to endure. “I cannot recall in my time of service having had such strong winds. The Wood-

ridge fire was very scary. The team really went way beyond the call of duty.” Reading through a tribute to pay appreciation to the sterling work by the fire fighters, senior director at the Fire and Emergency Services, Andre de Ridder said, “I don’t think the average person in the public can actually appreciate everything that you do. You are always risking your lives to save others. He added “I don’t think there is any profession in the world that does all the things that the fire services do. “You truly are the jack of all trades.”

THE Southern Kings will embrace the chance to explore new playing opportunities in view of the strategic SANZAAR decision to revamp the Vodacom Super Rugby competition, the franchise and SA Rugby announced on Friday. The announcement was made just before a special general meeting of SA Rugby in Cape Town last week to confirm South Africa’s four participants in the competition formally in line with a SANZAAR decision to reduce the competition’s participants from 18 to 15 teams from next season. The new structure will comprise four teams from South Africa, five from New Zealand, four from Australia and one each from Argentina and Japan. The Vodacom Bulls, Emirates Lions, DHL Stormers and Cell C Sharks have been confirmed as South Africa’s four Vodacom Super Rugby competitors from next year, SA Rug-

by announced on Friday. André Rademan, president of the EPRU, said, “It has been a roller coaster ride for the franchise for a number of seasons, but there is now a clear and viable way forward for rugby in the Eastern Cape to build on the foundations that have been laid – particularly in the past season. “We have enjoyed Vodacom Super Rugby, but the chance to test ourselves against different opposition sides in different conditions is a mouthwatering one. We are, therefore, not opposed to joining new competitions. With all stakeholders pulling in the same direction, we can bring success and excitement to rugby in the Eastern Cape.” ) The Kings will be playing their final home game in the Super Rugby series against the Toyota Cheetahs this Saturday at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium. – REPORTER

Geyer’s marathon effort raises more than R100 000 for charity REPORTER ON May 26 Richard Geyer set off on a 10-day journey, running 1 000km from Port Elizabeth to the Comrades Marathon finish line in Pietermaritzburg to raise funds for CANSA Port Elizabeth. Geyer ran in memory of his grandfather, Bob Petzer, who had cancer, and in support of those affected by cancer. Though he faced serious health issues along the way, Geyer refused to give up. “The essence of this feat is to take a stance with those fighting cancer. I had to keep fighting until the end, all the way through to the finish line of the Comrades Marathon,”

he said. The BOB1000 initiative ended up raising a total of R107 450 which was handed over to CANSA PE on July 4. “It is amazing what this young man has achieved in 10 days,” said CANSA’s Marius de Vries. “He has motivated many to keep fighting, push through and overcome any obstacle they may face.” BOB1000’s team organiser, Lesley Domingo, added, “The success of BOB1000, the money raised in support of the fight against cancer, and the recognition it received are all thanks to the sponsors and supporters. “We are still in awe of the reach and momentum the BOB1000 initiative gained,” Domingo said.

Big brands aid Missionvale residents affected by fires REPORTER IN the aftermath of the recent fires that broke out across Nelson Mandela Bay, KimberlyClark (K-C) partnered with Mango Airlines and BidAir to provide the affected community members with certain essential items. They recently arranged donations from a few big brands to change the lives of children at Missionvale Care Centre. The donated items include BabySoft Toilet Tissue, Huggies Nappy Pants and food parcels. The centre is located in the poor informal settlement of Missionvale which has one of the highest rates of unemployment in the region. It seeks to address the needs of the community through its various institutions and initiatives, including a primary school, children’s

support and development programmes, health unit to compliment municipal clinics, clothing warehouse and Christmas Cheer projects. The centre, which provides pre- and postnatal care to mothers, will be distributing the donated Huggies Nappy Pants. Missionvale Care Centre also provides more than 1 000 people with food every week. The service is open to anyone, provided they bring along an item that can be recycled. This ensures that the community members take responsibility for their surroundings and help clean up the environment. The Mango Airlines, BidAir Cargo and Kimberly-Clark representatives, who were inspired by Missionvale Care Centre’s work in the community, echoed Winston Churchill’s sentiments, saying, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”

Minister to launch Debut Fund Programme for young artists REPORTER THE Arts and Culture Minister, Nathi Mthethwa, will launch the Debut Fund Programme for emerging artists tomorrow at the Nangoza Jebe Community Hall in New Brighton. The fund seeks to strengthen knowledge and skills development for young artists and also give them opportunities to apply for funding to support their ventures fur-

ther. The programme is a partnership between the Department of Arts and Culture (DAC) and the Business and Arts South Africa (BASA). In his 2017/18 budget vote speeches, Mthethwa spoke about his overwhelming desire to establish the Debut Fund Programme for the development of up-andcoming artists within the sector. “The Debut Fund Programme creates training, mentoring and funding opportunities for young artists from all disciplines

making their debut. In partnership with BASA, it is anticipated that this fund will support young artists from all over the country to take their first steps as professional artists, stated Mthethwa. It is against this context that the Department of Arts and Culture in collaboration with BASA are launching the implementation phase. A call for applications has recently been made in Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape, Eastern Cape, Gauteng and Free State. The Debut Funding Programme targets emerging organisations or individuals between the ages of 18-35 years within the arts, culture and heritage sector. The programme combines DAC Debut Funding with BASA’s Education, Mentorship, and Young Business Professionals Programme, as well as opportunities to apply for BASA supporting grants. As part of the programme, BASA has identified community arts centres supported by DAC within each province and collaborated with them. These centres

will serve as programme anchors providing support, assisting with marketing and recruitment channels and serves as a local point of contact between the delegates, BASA and the Department of Arts and Culture. The programme will be implemented in several phases, following key elements of the programme such as Train the Trainer, which involves artist recruitment, workshops, reviewing assignment submissions, processing applications and providing feedback to potential delegates under the guidance and supervision of the BASA inhouse facilitator. In ensuring the sustainability of the programme in the different provinces, local provincial representatives from the local art centres will be trained to become co-facilitators in the programme. “The fund will provide opportunities to develop new local content and for that allimportant ‘break’ in their career. Linked to the funding will be a mentorship programme to make sure that these aspirant professionals have the best possible advice and guidance, concluded Mthethwa.

‘We all deserve a place in the sun’ ZELDRÉ STRAUSS SWANEPOEL MAGGIE Cunningham felt so strongly about the empowerment of the disabled that she started a group where members of the community with mental and physical disabilities can socialise, and at the same time create arts and crafts to generate an income. Cunningham and Ursula Pillay started Jolly Good Fellas club a year ago with the purpose of enabling community members who are marginalised because of their mental or physical challenges. The group meets every Tuesday at the Seringa Centre where they create arts and crafts which are sold at the Cleary Park Shopping Centre once a week. A retired teacher and nurse assist the group and give lessons in sewing, crocheting, knitting and beadwork. A group of residents from the Cheshire Home in Cleary Park also joins in the activities. “I am a retired nurse and I have a passion for working with people who have challenges. I feel strongly that the disabled should not be left to just sit around with no purpose, but should rather be given the opportunity to interact with and contribute to society,” said Cunningham. The group was dealt a blow last year when their sewing machines, paint and knitting needles were stolen during a break-in. “We are very grateful to Mervin and Mary-Ann Rossouw who avail the Seringa Centre to us, but if it is God’s will, we would love to have our own little place, especially for the storage of our crafts,” said Cunningham. Group member Michelle Abels

Some of the members of Jolly Good Fellas are, at the back, Maggie Cunningham and Magdalene Maart. In front, from left are Marilyn Jansen, Fiona Hector (chairperson) and Michelle Abels. PHOTOS: ZELDRÉ STRAUSS SWANEPOEL said that being a part of the Jolly Good Fellas has given her a sense of freedom and she has achieved things she never thought possible, such as obtaining her drivers’ licence. “Many of us disabled people tend to sit at home and feel sorry for ourselves. We must realise we are not dead and can also contribute to the world. We also deserve a place in the sun. All we ask is that the community support us in what we do. We would appreciate that very much,” said Abels. For more info call Maggie Cunningham on 071 461 0693. ; Johanna Geswindt teaches the group more about embroidery.

Medals galore for Jarryd at world karate champs REPORTER LOCAL karate enthusiast, Jarryd Behr, brought home an impressive collection of medals after representing South Africa at the sixth annual WJKA World Championship in the Netherlands which took place from June 28 to July 2. Behr, a Grade 4 learner at Sunridge Primary School, is a karateka

at Titan Karate in Port Elizabeth under the guidance of Sensei Erwee Tiran. Last year Behr and his parents faced the daunting task of raising the R60 000 it cost him and his father, Jeff, to attend the tournament. In addition to searching for sponsors, Behr started selling 3D karatethemed cards for R40 to raise the funds. His mother, Sharon, taught him

how to make interesting and creative cards, as she had been doing it herself for years. He also made and sold necklaces and bracelets. In the end, he did not receive any company sponsors, but got five items to raffle. Behr also gave up school sport for six months, according to his mother, to concentrate only on karate. “He practised four days a week, entered numerous competitions on Sat-

urdays and did SA team training. “The months leading up to the championships had not been all smooth sailing, while Jarryd ended up in trauma with a back injury,” Sharon said. The effort turned out to be well worth it. After entering eight divisions in the WJKA World Championship, Behr managed to bring home a total of seven medals, four silver and three bronze.

“This is a huge achievement for such a young man and Jarryd has made South Africa, his team and karate club very proud,” said Sharon Behr. “Hard work, determination and the support of family and friends has made this happen for Jarryd. “He said this has been his dream from the age of five and the lessons in life he has learned from this journey are priceless.”

Madibaz students master martial arts

Grey boy among country’s best

REPORTER TWO NMMU-Madibaz karatekas have been selected for the national teams after the university finished second at the University Sport South Africa (USSA) tournament in Pretoria over the weekend.

Grey Boys’ High Grade 11 learner Warwick Griffin represented the Eastern Province in the final round of the Applications Olympiad held in Cape Town on July 4. Warwick achieved first position in the Eastern Cape in the second round of the Olympiad which took place on June 7. He was then invited to participate in the final round in Cape Town, where he was one of 14 candidates selected from all the provinces. Warwick Griffin received his award from Moira de Roche, director and past president of the Institute of IT Professionals of South Africa (IITPSA) at the awards function. PHOTO:SUPPLIED

The Madibaz, who won the title from 2010 to 2015, shared the runnersup spot with Vaal University of Technology behind champions Walter Sisulu University. On an individual level, NMMU’s Teboho Zongola and Adre Weideman were chosen for USSA teams that will take part in international tournaments. The 21-year-old Zongola, a marketing student who competes in full contact, will head to Russia in December while Weideman, a human movement science student, will compete in the semi-contact discipline at the World Student Games in Taipei next August. Zongola, who hails from Matatiele, was delighted with his selection, but added that he had plenty of room for improvement.

“The tournament was quite hectic, but I’m happy with my performance and the team’s overall showing. “My best effort came on the second day in the knockdown category when I had four fights and lost only the last to come second.” Weideman, a 19-year-old from Korsten, was encouraged by her parents to take up the sport and has been competing since 2006.

She has been selected for national teams since 2009 and is looking forward to attend the World Student Games after missing out last year. “I was chosen last year to go to Portugal, but, unfortunately, it clashed with a number of other commitments,” said Weideman, who won bronze in the kumite category. “Now I have another chance and I’m hoping nothing happens this time so I can make up for last year’s disappointment.” Madibaz sport’s karate chairwoman Hlubikazi Zibi said the squad showed dedication and put in a lot of hard work. “We congratulate them for giving it their all and we would like to recognise sensei Gcobani Maxama for his leadership and continued support.” Madibaz sport karate manager, Bernard Petersen said they were extremely proud of what the squad had achieved over a long period of time. “Since 2005 we have never ended lower than second in the USSA tournament and it’s a tribute to the hard work the students and coaches have put in over the years,” he said.

Judo star Matthew (12) shines in Bloem REPORTER SUMMERWOOD Primary School Grade 6 learner Matthew Koutsoudis (12) recently travelled to Bloemfontein to attend the SA Judo championships where he earned his SA Judo colours.

As seen on DStv 59631

Matthew is a member of PS Bro’s Martial Arts Academy, where he is trained by sensei Sindile Manengela and sensei Peter Anderhold. Matthew obtained his EP/NMBJ colours and represented EP from 2014 to 2017. He has won silver at the SA championships in 2014 and gold in 2015, 2016 and 2017 making him the SA judo champion in his age and weight cate-

gory for three years in a row. His proud mother, Goldene, said his achievements came with a lot of hard work. “There are a lot of expenses that come with Matthew having to travel at least four times a year to compete nationally. We have been very fortunate to have been sponsored by Friedman Scheckter Attorneys this year.” Goldene added that Matthew is a Christian judoka who is modest about his achievements. “It takes a lot of self-discipline, dedication and hard work. He believes in always giving his best and maintaining a positive attitude. He would like to thank his club, senseis, sponsors and give all glory to God.”

Albert Frost in PE for one night only

First beauty pageant is a smashing success

REPORTER

ANIKA DE BEER

A FAMILIAR and respected feature of the South African blues-rock music scene, Albert Frost, will be performing in Port Elizabeth for one night only this July.

KWADWESI-BASED company, The Unthinkable Events (Pty) Ltd, hosted a beauty pageant on June 30 at the Henry Fasi Hall.

For the past two decades, the energetic performances of this accomplished guitarist have dazzled audiences as he deftly alternates between rhythm and lead, while showcasing acoustic and electric guitars. His first love is blues, stemming from the influence of his long relationship with the Blues Broers, with whom he has performed since 1994. Frost has recorded with Arno Carstens, Koos Kombuis, Chris Chameleon, Blues Broers and many others and has toured with the likes of Simple Minds. In 2015, Frost’s impressive 21year stint with the Blues Broers came to an end and he is now looking forward to new collaborations. In April last year he released his much anticipated third solo album, The Wake Up, which, according to Frost, signalled the “start of a new journey” for him. The Wake Up explored various musical avenues and lyrical content to create something Frost said would surprise and excite his fans. The album won the coveted title of best rock album category at the 2017 SAMA Awards. Frost will be in Port Elizabeth for a onenight-only performance on Friday at The Music Kitchen in Newton Park at 10pm. Tickets are R150 per person and bookings can be made on 072 994 5096.

The beauty pageant gave the youth of the KwaDwesi, KwaDwesi Extension, Joe Slovo and KwaMagxaki areas the opportunity to win the titles of Miss Cutelligent (ages 6 to 12) and Miss Beautelligent (ages 13 to 18). It was the first in a series of events aimed at promoting youth development in the Nelson Mandela Bay, with specific focus on minimis-

ing drug and alcohol abuse and the amount of school drop-outs and teenage pregnancies. Other than beauty pageants, the types of events include academic awards, school debates and educational camps. Vuyolwethu Mbinambina, founder of The Unthinkable Events, said that her long-term plan is to create employment opportunities. She ran the beauty pageant with no budget to speak of and was amazed at its success. The Unthinkable Events will be hosting their next event on September 2 in Zwide. For more info contact Vuyolwethu on theunthinkableevents@webmail.co.za.

Promoted Rangers are a PE United overcome force to be reckoned with Stars on home turf SELBY MADIKANE

SELBY MADIKANE

MOTHERWELL Football Association’s (MOFA) newly promoted side, City Rangers, proved that they are a force to be reckoned with when they devastated Young Romans 2-0 in the MOFA premiership match that took place at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Sunday.

NEW Brighton side, PE United, claimed a hard-fought 2-1 victory from Tomorrow Stars during their SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) Women’s Regional League Stream A clash at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Sunday.

Rangers, who are set to surprise many MOFA Premier League top guns, did not show any respect to Romans. Romans, who are known for playing carpet football, faced the fit side in a running football match. It was clear that the newcomers wanted nothing more than the three maximum points. Rangers broke the ice following a goal that was scored by Odwa Smiles in the first half. Siyabonga Dayile beat two of Romans’ defenders and pulled a tame shot that did not trouble Romans’ goalkeeper, Sandile Qupe. Dayile, who had a number of goal-scoring opportunities, was denied a goal by Qupe at close range. Loyiso Mrwebi sent a perfect cross to Dayile whose header hit the cross, leaving Qupe well-beaten. Mrwebi then rounded three defenders of Romans and he sent a powerful shot that crossed the goal line. Rangers went home victorious after defeating Romans 2-0 in a tough battle. Head coach Mpumelelo Timse told

Wells United skipper, Siyabulela “Ben 10” Gotyana, is chased by Young Madrid defender, Lutho Sango.

PE Express that his side came to the game well prepared. Timse said, “We came to the game not to lose. We work hard every time we play. We respect all the sides that we play against. I always tell my players that they must not be too complacent.” In another game, Highland Spurs beat FC Angels 4-1. Thanduxolo Somhlaba, Wandile Somhlaba and skipper Sibusiso Rhee Mabengu scored Spurs’ goals, while Siyamthanda Digger Matiwane

scored Angels’ consolation goal. Wells United were held to 1-1 draw by Young Madrid. United’s goal came courtesy of Zachariah Peter, while Mzikayise Pule Ndaba equalised for Madrid.

Learners excel in soccer tournament REPORTER ST Dominic’s Priory School’s first team boys and girls participated in the annual SA High Schools Soccer Tournament which took place in East London from July 3 to 5. The girls started the tournament on a high note when they faced Selly Park and won 5-0. The boys’ team followed with a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Milnerton High School, while the girls ended the day with a 1-1 draw

against last year’s runners-up, Kimberley Girls’ High. The boys had a tough second day, losing both their matches. The girls beat Milnerton 1-0 in their first match, but lost their second against Rand Girls’ High 3-0 in the round robin section. After a heated battle, Priory’s boys lost to Victoria Park High in the quarter-final match. For the girls it was the first time a Priory soccer team had made it to the semi-finals of the tournament. They beat Kimberley Girls’

High 3-1 in their semi-final match and advanced to the finals where they came up against Rand Girls’ High. The score was still 0-0 at the end of the game and led to a penalty shoot-out, which Rand Girls’ High won 3-1. Though the girls’ team had to settle for the silver medal, a few St Dominic’s Priory learners were chosen for the All Stars Team. They were Tomas Lück from the boys’ team and Ashika Coollen, Aphiwe Siyo and Alexia Potgieter (captain) from the girls’ team.

The ghastly wind spoiled the big showdown between the two sides. The home side looked very shaky and could not play as a unit, and the New Brighton lasses capitalised on that. Mmarato Nontshinga banged in the opening goal of PE United at the halfway mark of the first half. In the remaining minutes of the first half, both teams failed to score goals. Stars midfielder, Andisiwe Solomon, looked more serious in the second half. United striker Lutho Mncane increased her side’s lead to 2-0 after she found the back of the net as the hosts’ goalkeeper

spilled the ball onto the striker’s feet. Stars’ midfielder Solomon missed a golden opportunity after her efforts went over the crossbar. Stars’ late goal came courtesy of Solomon, who decreased the hosts’ deficit to 2-1. PE United collected the maximum three points after the final score of 2-1.

WAFA Premier League results SELBY MADIKANE DESPITE the chilly weather conditions, football fans came out in large numbers to watch the Walmer Football Association Premier League games that were played at Walmer Community Fields from July 8 to 9. Peace United managed to earn a 1-0 hard-fought win over Golden Heroes, while Ghetto Stars accumulated three maximum points from Manchester United who failed to pitch up for their game. Airport Valley United also disappointed football-loving supporters after they failed to show up to play their game against Walmer Stars. Real Madrid, however, managed to

defeat African Aces 3-2 in their entertaining match. It was a disgrace to the diehard supporters of Young Aces when they saw their side being handed a dramatic 0-23 defeat by Peace United, while Ghetto Stars ruthlessly whacked Walmer Hotspurs 5-1 in their one-sided game. Walmer Stars managed to salvage a comfortable 3-1 victory from Golden Heroes. Other WAFA Premier League results:

DESPITE going down to Westlake 1-0 on Windvogel Field on Sunday, Hotspurs remain at the top of the Northern Areas Football Association league. Bloom Callies moved into second position in the league when they managed a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Shamrocks at Finnis Fields, while Celtic lost against 2-1 Helenvale.

The top spots of the Northern Areas Football Association league currently belong to Hotspurs with 32 points and Bloom Callies with 31 points, while Park United, Westlake, Wolves and Helenvale are tied for third position with 29 points. Wolves is the only team with two games still to be played. They still stand a chance at claiming the top spot. – REPORTER

Callies on a winning streak in PE Legends Football Association league FRANCOIS ROTHNER CALLIES won their third game in a row in the Port Elizabeth Legends Football Association (PELFA) Old Buck Legends League when they beat Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) 3-1 at The Oval. Karl Pereira opened the scoring for Callies, followed by Dillon Germ-

shuys’ shot a few minutes before half -time. The half-time score was 2-0 in favour of Callies. NMBM found the back of the net eight minutes into the second half. Riaan Baarth netted Callies’ third and final goal four minutes before the final whistle. In another game, Mahle Old Grey thumped Priory 5-2. Old Grey’s goalscorers were John

Minnie, Simon McGillewie, Jason Aitken, Matthew Fairbrother and Joogoo Julius on a penalty. Ralton Potgieter scored for Priory early in the second half and Paul Ladds added Priory’s second goal from the penalty spot. Hearts also won a close battle over African Leopards thanks to a goal by Brent Charles. Kuyga Masters lowered Westpark’s colours 3-2.

For Kuyga Sinqe Thanduxolo scored one goal, while Sandile Getse helped himself to a brace and Carwyn Thompson and Warren Brown scored for Westpark. Shamrocks did not have everything go their way when they beat PE City 2-1. Kumarin ‘Bubble’ Naidoo’s first half brace had Shamrocks up by two when the half-time whistle blew.

Derick Bailey netted for City during the second half. Round two of the PELFA Old Buck Legends League will kick off tonight. The fixtures for tonight are:

PE EXPRESS | WEDNESDAY 12 JULY 2017

SAFA NMB Masters Association League is full of surprises SELBY MADIKANE A NUMBER of loyal supporters were taken aback when they saw their fancied sides losing to underdog opponents during the SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) Masters Association League on Sunday. Joe Slovo Masters managed to share a 2-2 draw with the high-flying Winners in their game at KwaDwesi Community Fields. Mnikelo Ntanjana and Nkosana Gaza Ndondo each scored a brace for Joe Slovo and Winners respectively. In another game, the gutsy Eleven

Attackers were surprised by PE Eleven when they played to a 2-2 draw. Mthunzi Mrwebi and Ncedisa Goniwe came up with a goal each for Attackers, while Zimele Funde and Mkhululi January scored goals for PE Eleven. VW Masters caused some shock waves among the supporters of AmaUnits after their side was thrashed 4-0 at the Stinging Bees Grounds. Nkosinathi Tiya’s hat-trick and Thozamile Ngesi’s single goal caused damage to AmaUnits. The Veeplaas Masters failed to honour their game against Gqeberha Masters which was scheduled to

be played at the Walmer Community Fields. Despite their 3-2 loss, Zwide Masters gave PE All Stars a run for their money in their game at Stinging Bees Ground. Despite claiming their 2-1 triumph, Sparks Masters had a tough battle against Eberspascher at Motherwell NU 13 Ground. Lungile Zenani came up with Eberspascher’s goal and Mlungisi Jazino Bonga and Kaizer Quntu scored a goal each for Sparks. New Brighton also secured a 1-1 draw when they came up against Villagers at Molefe Primary School.

Bottas holds off Vettel for Austria win THE Austrian Grand Prix was a weekend that should have suited the Mercedes W08 to a tee. It did, but in the shape of Valtteri Bottas it wasn’t quite the Mercedes driver that most would’ve expected to see on the top step of the podium. The Finnish driver delivered a dominant performance not only throughout the 71-lap race but also over the entire Grand Prix weekend. So perfect was his pull-away from pole that it was nearly considered inhuman and inspected by FIA stewards for a possible jumpstart. As it turns out Bottas’ reaction time of 0.201 was nothing more than flawless precision. The Mercedes driver streaked ahead in the first few laps and built a comfortable lead in the first stint of the race. The Ferrari of Sebastian Vettel, starting second, didn’t look especially comfortable in the first stint of the race on the ultrasoft compound and he struggled to match Bottas’ pace consistently. It was only in the second stint of the race, with the supersoft tyre, that the Ferrari came alive and that Vettel was able to exert a significant amount of pressure on the race leader. However, Bottas was well in control and armed with the notoriously calm Finnish demeanour that allowed him to maintain his composure and the lead of the race. While Max Verstappen suffered a fifth retirement in six races after being collected in a first corner incident, Daniel Ricciardo shone for Red Bull on home turf with a hard-

fought third place. The Aussie valiantly held off the quicker Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton in the closing stages of the race to score his fifth consecutive podium finish of 2017. For Hamilton, in fourth, the day was about damage limitation, as he started eighth after incurring a five-place grid penalty for changing a gearbox. Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen ran fourth in the first stint of the race and dove into the pitlane on lap 42. His longer first stint meant he fell behind Hamilton and while he was consistently catching the Brit in the second half of the race, the impetus seemed to evaporate from his charge. Romain Grosjean ran an anonymous but impressive race to sixth ahead of the two Force India’s of Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon in seventh and eighth. Felipe Massa and Lance Stroll, in ninth and tenth, recovered a difficult qualifying for Williams to round out the top ten. Bottas may only have won the Austrian Grand Prix by 0.658 of a second but he showed incredible composure in the closing

stages and an impressive dominance in the first half of the race. At Williams Bottas’ potential was somewhat masked but what the team’s requirement of him was. Naturally, he had the freedom to drive as rapidly as he possibly could, but it was always slightly tempered with the knowledge that he needed to bring the car home in a decent points paying position. At Mercedes Bottas has a bit more freedom in the fact that a decent haul of points is already assured, barring unreliability. This is what’s allowed him to stretch his legs and drive with a sort of freedom that has allowed him to finally begin to fulfil the potential he showed before entering Formula 1. Vettel’s now 20-point lead in the driver’s standings is a handy one as the paddock heads to Silverstone for the British Grand Prix. Hamilton at his home race has always been something special and with Vettel pulling away slightly in the standings, he needs to deliver in Silverstone.

Local stars set for glory at national champs Local racers and teams will be ready to thrill their Nelson Mandela Bay fans when the Extreme Festival brings the Sasol Global Touring Cars, Engen Volkswagen Cup and Investchem Formula 1600 to the Aldo Scribante Racetrack on Saturday. Local interest will no doubt centre on the two Sasol GTC races, where home team Terry Moss Racing and its Port Elizabeth drivers, multiple SA and reigning GTC champi-

home ground of the Engen Volkswagen Cup, where much of SA’s future racing talent will be on display with the likes of Devin Robertson, Jeff Kruger, Juan Gerber, lady racer Tasmin Pepper and Shaun La Réserveé set to mix it up with testosteronecharged kids Clinton Bezuidenhout, Matt Shorter, Daniel Duminy, Giordano Lupini and others keen to make a mark. Another band of youngsters taking a different route to the top, the Investchem Formula 1600 single-seater lot, will, however, have one task in mind and that’s to topple the so far unbeatable Capetonian, Julian van der Watt from his 2017 winning ways. The team includes drivers Stuart White,
