Madibaz campaign for home support REPORTER

R

UGBY is on the rise in the region and it’s not only the Southern Kings that people should be proud of.

VUUR EN VLAM VIR CHILLI-FEES

The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s high-flying first XV, The Madibaz, have won three consecutive home games and are hoping for great home support on Monday, March 18 when they take on the team of the University of Pretoria (Tukkies) in what is their biggest chance to date of making the semi-finals of the university competition. NMMU is presently fourth on the log – their best performance so far in the six-year history of the student competition. The team have this week launched a campaign visiting schools in the metro in an attempt to get 10 000 supporters (named Dibas) for this game in the NMMU Stadium at the university’s South Campus. It will be their final home game of the Varsity Cup season. “The support we have received has been incredible, but we’d like to make it even better for the final home game,” said Madibaz coach Brent Janse van Rensburg. “Rugby is on the rise in our province. We know what support can do for our team,” added Brent. There are various incentives for spectators, all mirroring the 10 000 Dibas call. These include R10 000 up for grabs in the kicking competition at half-time and R10 000 for the best NMMU residence supporters. Entry is free. Kick-off is at 7pm. ) In the past few weeks, NMMU has beaten Wits (24 – 26), University of Free State’s Shimlas (14 – 10) and the University of Johannesburg (20 – 13). They drew 5 all against the University of Cape Town in the Mother City, and almost caused a massive upset in their narrow loss against Maties in Stellenbosch (13 – 8).
