She said this happened because of the residents’ negligence. “It is their own fault, as they do not have sufficient security measures.

“Here are 122 houses. We cannot take care of everyone’s safety,” Eckermann said. “It’s everybody’s own responsibility.” She added that it is a sectional title complex. It was, therefore, not the responsibility of the trust to take care of every resident. Pieterse said that he paid a levy every month to live in the complex. He believed these funds should be used for improved security.

Young violin ensemble off to Cape Town Booysen Park Primary is very proud of its violin ensemble, which has been doing exceptionally well since its inception in 2012. This group of young violinists will be flying to Cape Town next week for one week. This will be the first time for most of to fly and will serve as an educational outing as well as a reward for their hard work. Trollip said the main objective was to increase the access point “gateway” to the area, making it more commuter friendly. Fountain Road serves as a main access road to Walmer Township and is used mainly by public transport.

The scope for this project was to resurface, realign and upgrade traffic signals, improve the conditions and structure of the road, and improve non-motorised transport facilities. The majority of the labour was done by the community itself, through utilising the Extended Public Works Programme. Ten emerging contractors benefited from the R9 million project. Trollip emphasised the importance of private contractors providing quality service and completing their projects on time. He also added that every cent

spent by the NMBM should reflect in the value and services provided. “This road will serve as an important link between Walmer Township and Walmer suburbs and eradicate traffic congestion, thus creating an easy flow of traffic,” added ward councillor Ayanda Tyokwana. “Step by step this municipality continues to hold on to its promise of providing quality services to the people of this metro and reaffirms its commitment to turn townships into suburbs,” Trollip concluded.

Coega warns job hunters about new scam REPORTER IN the past couple of weeks, the Coega Development Corporation (CDC) has been made aware of social media messages that have been circulating about construction jobs that are allegedly sold by persons in- or outside the employ of the CDC, purporting to be representing the CDC. The CDC views these allegations in a serious light and would like to

categorically distance itself from them. “Furthermore, the CDC would like to reiterate that under no circumstances will job seekers be asked for money in the pre-recruitment and post-recruitment processes. Since one of our four values is integrity, we ensure that in all our processes, we adhere and promote good corporate governance, honesty and transparent practices,” the CDC

said. “Therefore, we have zero tolerance for fraud and corruption. Local architect celebrated at 10th annual NMU lecture REPORTER RENOWNED Port Elizabeth architect John Rushmere will be honoured this year as the 10th Nelson Mandela University (NMU) School of Architecture’s Milde McWilliams Memorial Lecture laureate since the inception of the nationally acclaimed commemorative event. The prestigious annual public lecture will be held today in the NMU South Campus Auditorium. NMU School of Architecture director Boban Varghese said the principal aim of the lectures is “to provide a forum for the exchange of architectural thought at the highest level” in a form that is accessible to both the student body and the community. “This lecture series has long been a highlight of the national architectural calendar. “Our policy is to focus on the work of important Southern African architects, including those based abroad, and also to celebrate the re- Renowned local markable contributions made Rushmere. by the architectural practice of Jones and McWilliams,” Varghese said. The memorial lecture is funded by the Milde McWilliams Trust, of which esteemed architect Herbert McWilliams was a founding donor. The Jones and McWilliams practice was responsible for a number of significant buildings throughout the Eastern Cape. Landmark structures in Port Elizabeth include the King Edward Mansions, the Technical College, the Port Elizabeth Club, the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum, as well as many treasured residences in the affluent sub-

urbs of Mill Park and Walmer. Varghese said Rushmere is being recognised this year for his collective body of outstanding architectural works, many of which are also much-loved landmarks in the Eastern Cape, such as the Duckpond cricket pavilion at St George’s Park, Onion Row townhouse development in Walmer, and Cullen Bowles Residence at Rhodes University in Grahamstown. “John obtained a B Arch degree with distinction in 1963 from the University of Cape Town and then spent three valuable years working with a group of influential professionals at Associated Architects in Johannesburg. “He moved to Port Elizabeth in 1967 as a principal partner in the practice of Erasmus Rushmere Reid,” Varghese said. Rushmere has received numerous awards for his distinctive work over the past 45 years, including a lifetime award as the 12th recipient of the South African architect, John Institute of Architects (SAIA) gold medal in 2001. Terblanche het ’n trust, Kusaidiana, gestig as ’n openbare bystandorganisasie waardeur sakeondernemings en individue bydraes vir behoeftige jong mense van Afrika kan maak. Kusaidiana is ’n Swahili-uitdrukking wat beteken “om mekaar te ondersteun”. Sy voeg by dat die jong mense in die middestad van Port Elizabeth graag vaardighede wil bekom sodat hulle in die behoeftes van hul gesinne kan voorsien en verder ook tot die ekonomie van die Oos-Kaap kan bydra. Die doel van die trust is om studente

Die aanleer van vaardighede vir soveel as moontlik jong mense is deurslaggewend vir die toekoms van die land. Daarom is dit vir my ’n voorreg om deel van hierdie trust te wees,” sê Greyling. New Ward 37 office celebrates one year anniversary ZELDRÉ STRAUSS SWANEPOEL FROM having nothing, to having a container to finally having an office building that they can proudly call their ward office. Residents of Ward 37, which includes Extensions 27, 28, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35 and 36 are happy about the positive changes that the office has brought, such as new streetlights, tarred streets and blocked drains that have been fixed. The office, which celebrated its one year anniversary last week, is situated on the corner of Rensburg Street and Barberry Road in Extension 31. What the residents say: “Before this office was here, I did not even know who our ward councillor was,” remarked Reverend Mervin Bashells. He added that he is pleased that the area, which is known for gang violence, was receiving attention towards day-to-day problems such

Ward 37 resident Dina Zealand said that she felt comfortable when she came to the office for assistance. “When I walk in here, I feel very comfortable and I’m confident that my issues will be dealt with. “If the office staff don’t know how to help me, they will find someone who can,” said Zealand, who recently came to the ward office after the day care facility at her home burnt down. “I am rebuilding bit by bit, but these gentlemen at the ward office helped me on my feet by obtaining a donation of blankets for the little ones. I am so grateful. They go above and beyond their duties.” Randall Claassen, a young man from Extension 33, is pleased that the office makes an effort to assist the youth and jobseekers in general. “This office serves as information point and the staff is very helpful towards the youth who need assistance with CVs and job applications. “It is clear that they take the creation of job opportunities for the youth very seriously,” Claassen, who aspires to be a foundation phase teacher, said. Cynthia Julies is a senior citizen who had to live without electricity for five years. “I really did not know what to do anymore. For five years nobody could help me. “Then when this office opened, I had hope again because the staff assisted me with the problem and today I am very proud to be able to switch a light on in my house.”

Baadjies runs the day-to-day administrative duties of the office and is the ward councillor’s right-hand man. “The past year in office has been a learning curve. I learnt that is a big responsibility to have people put all their trust into me, but simultaneously I enjoy helping people and making a change in their lives,” Baadjies said. Whaleed Hlabanie takes care of security

and assists with the office administration. “It’s only been a year, but we as colleagues have such a great understanding. We have a mutual respect for each other and have each other’s backs. That is why we make such a great team.” Ward 37 councillor Neville Higgins gives all credit to his team. “There have been highlights as well as challenges this past year, but I can truly say that our team do our utmost to assist the residents to the best of our ability, and, that, I am very proud of. “There is of course, always room for improvement and we are looking forward to learning and growing with the community.”

Exciting finish for runners at Gelvandale Race A NUMBER of top running events will take place this weekend, including the Gelvandale 15km Road Race and 5km Family Run/Walk, which will be held in Port Elizabeth. A few of the top finishers from last year’s Gelvandale 15km race will be out of town, so, anything can happen. The Gelvandale 15km Road Race and 5km Family Run/Walk will be held at the Gelvandale Stadium on Saturday. Michael Mbambani of Eastern Province Athletics announced that a R10 000 incentive has been introduced for the top three schools with the most finishers in the 5km Family Run. The winning school will receive R5 000, while the second and third place schools will receive R3 000 and R2 000 respectively. Race organisers, Gelvan Athletic Club and X-Cel Running Club, confirmed that all 5km finishers will receive a medal.

In the 15km race, gold medals will be awarded to the first five men and women, plus category winners. Silver medals will be awarded to the next 150 athletes and bronze medals to all finishers within the cut-off time. The 15km starts at 6:30am with a cut-off at 9am and the 5km which starts at 6:45am with a cut-off at 8am. Both races start and finish at Gelvandale Stadium in Liebenberg Road. Die enigste verskil is dat daar so paar “dansliedjies” nou ingelsuit is en dit maak dit lekker luistermusiek vir elke liewe lid van die familie. Sundowns take down Shakers SELBY MADIKANE SEVEN Sundowns Sports Club thumped their neighbours, City Shakers, 3-1 during their friendly soccer match that took place at Seven Sundowns Soccer Fields in Motherwell NU 7 on Sunday. Shakers took the game to the hosts who forced them to defend for quite a long time. The Motherwell NU 6 side’s goal poacher, Zuko Manzini, opened the scoring with a shot that Sundowns’ goalkeeper failed to save. Shakers did not underestimate the

youthful side of Motherwell NU 7, but kept on applying more pressure on Sundowns. Shakers maintained their lead until the end of the first stanza. Hundreds of home supporters and parents kept on singing for their side. Sundowns’ right wing, Siyaxolisa September, gave Shakers’ left full back quite a headache. September whipped a perfect cross to his dribbling wizard, Anathi Mgqomo Mncono, who came up with Sundowns’ opening goal. Sundowns increased their lead to 2-1 after Mncono scored his second goal. Luyolo Yekiso was introduced into

the fray in the place of September. Yekiso was a catalyst as he changed the tempo of the game. He rounded two defenders of Shakers and sent a perfect pass to Mncono who was fouled by one of Shakers’ defenders in the goal area and the referee awarded a penalty to the hosts. Sundowns’ midfielder, Sandiso Sader Makonza, sent Shakers’ goalkeeper to the wrong side and scored a penalty kick that increased their lead to 3-1. Shakers’ midfielder, Siphamandla Skade, tried to decrease their deficit, but Sundowns maintained their 3-1 lead until the last whistle.

Amakhosi did not show Gal City any mercy when they demolished them 6-2 on their home turf at Emagaleni. Chiefs, who won many trophies in Zwifa, seemed as if they were having a practise session. MSR4 hosts sixth round of karting championship REPORTER THE sixth round of the MSR4 Corporate Karting Championship took place at the Celso Scribante Kart circuit on September 2. The Fleet Dynamics race day was an actionpacked event, with 41 karts on the grid and more than 120 drivers from PE, Cape Town, Johannesburg and East London taking part. The race day consisted of a practice session, one qualifying session and two multiple onehour races. The second of the two endurance races consisted of a reverse grid from the qualifying session. In the one-hour races, it was compulsory for each team to make three pit stops which included driver changes, adding to the dynamic of the event. In the tightly contested qualifying session, first place went to championship leaders, Team Dark Knights (Kart 14, Bryn High and Shaun Watson-Smith) closely followed by Team Mac Minarelli 2 (Kart 40, Graeme Nielsen) and Team Cape Fabric (Kart 199, Ross and Roxanne Bartle and Ayrton Good). The top 30 karts were all within three seconds of the pole sitter’s fastest lap. In the first of the two one-hour endurance races, it was Team Dark Knights that converted their qualifying position into a 30-second race one victory. The fight for the podium was hotly contest-

ed, where second to fourth place covered a mere 2.3 seconds. The battle for second place was won by Xtreme Yamaha (Kart 46, Warren Faifer and Gino Perini) with Team BS (Kart 72, Byron Teengs and Staci Allan) finishing in a close third position. The combined results saw the Johannesburg pair of drivers taking a 1-2 result, with team Mac Minarelli 2 taking the win ahead of Team Mac Minarelli 1 (127, Anthony Rofail). Again on the podium in third place was team Xtreme Yamaha. Team BS, who actually finished first on the road, was handed a 20-second penalty for being slightly underweight at the end of the race finishing in fourth place overall. The top eight karts at the end of the race were covered by less than 38 seconds after a full hour

of driving. A combined overall result for races one and two would see Team Xtreme Yamaha taking overall honours for the day, ahead of Team BS and Team Mac Minarelli 1. Special awards went to most improved driver Kelsey Davidson (17), with an incredible top 10 finish in race two, in only her second-ever race event. Driver of the day went to Robin Spence, with a fifth overall on the day. Spence recently returned to karting after a break of more than 20 years. Fastest lap went to team Mac Minarelli 2 and the hard-luck prize went to Stephen 2 Racing (Kart 86, Geoff and Neil Stephen, Kevin Vosloo), after having to retire in race two while leading. The next corporate event will take place next month.
