Dolly Nel, who has been involved with ACVV Rainbow which is close to the dump site, said she had observed children in the community playing in the illegal rubbish site daily. “We have seen very dangerous objects lying amongst the rubbish: broken bottles, rusted tins, nappies, and broken appliances. The stench itself is terrible on very hot days. Every week we phone the municipal offices, and the ward councillor but to no avail. No one seems to care that besides the obvious health

hazards the dumping is causing, it has serious, dangerous consequences to small children playing there,” said the disgruntled Nel. “Someone needs to fight for these kids instead of making promises of a better future for all. How much self-worth do these children grow up with thinking that this is normal way of living? They deserve better,” she added. DA Ward 31 Councillor, Penny Naidoo, said she was aware of the problem in the area and had alerted the municipality countless times of the issue related to illegal dumping sites in her ward. Naidoo said the municipality does not collect refuse in the area and the community only receives black plastic bin bags from her office to collect their rubbish on Mondays and Tuesdays. “Unfortunately the issue of illegal dumping is affecting the whole of the Metro. I have spoken to the municipality asking them to make plans to eradicate the illegal dump site in the area but nothing has been done yet. We currently do not have litter-picking trucks coming to the area which is one of the reasons this problem has persisted,” said Naidoo. Responding to Naidoo’s claims, Mniki, said Ward councillors are responsible for such issues as they have to come up with innovative ideas and wardbased plans so the municipality can allocate a budget for them in the IDP. “It is not only the job of the municipality but of councillors and the community to ensure that solutions are created in the wards. Councillors are encouraged every year to come up with wardbased plans which allow us to create enough funding to ensure that the community is allocated enough money in the budget for all their needs,” said Mniki. Mniki said other wards in the townships with similar problems had (with the help of the municipality) converted the dumping sites into playing parks for the children in order to curb the problem of illegal dumpings. Mniki said he encouraged concerned citizens such as Nel to call the municipality’s 24-hour call centre at 0 0800 2050 50 which would deploy an official to access the problem and find immediate solutions.

PE estate agent finalist in African award REPORTER PORT ELIZABETH real estate broker and Re/ Max Independent owner Kobie Potgieter has been named a national finalist in Africa’s Most Influential Women in Business and Government awards. Potgieter is one of nine finalists in the small and medium enterprise sector, with the winner representing South Africa in the regional division of the pan-African awards in Johannesburg on July 30. According to the judging panel, she was selected for the meaningful contribution she had made to her industry, which has also had a positive socio-economic impact on the country.

Shaaney Scott (now in Grade 12), said the script “Pass or Fail” has been turned into a film and was screened at the film festival. “There is one remaining award called the Viewer’s Choice award that is still outstanding and people can vote for their choice by downloading the mobile app from the website. Vote for me,” she added. “‘Pass or Fail’ is about a boy named Phiwe in grade 11 who has always been the class clown and doesn’t care much about his school marks. He is introduced to a new English teacher whom we see later taking a risk on Phiwe by interfering with his relationships with his friend and girlfriend in order to push him to improve himself,” explained Shaaney. Shaaney, whose film might soon be screened on eTV and two international film festivals overseas said, “I honestly was not expecting to win. I knew I was up against talented competitors. When I was told I had won, I was almost speechless! I am still very happy and grateful for the opportunity. The prize was to get your script onto screen at the film festival and on Youtube. He was the one who introduced us to this competition and has been my guide through the entire process.” Shaaney added, “My passion is composing my own music, song writing, singing and playing guitar. I intend studying Software Development at NMMU or Rhodes University with the intention to combine it with my passions to produce and direct my own movies to be able to inspire people. Coega donates wheelchairs to needy Grogro community REPORTER IMPOVERISHED community members of the Grogro Township, near Kragga Kamma received much needed wheelchairs from the Coega Development Corporation (CDC) last week Tuesday, 6 May as part of their focused Corporate Social Investment (CSI). CDC in partnership with the municipality said they identified a number of deserving recipients which received, among other items, five wheelchairs, blankets and school uniforms for 53 learners. CSI, CDC manager, Thandi Rayi, said, “We understand the complex challenges communities in our region face, particularly around basic needs. It is for this reason that our CSI programme seeks to address some of these challenges by targeted and meaningful interventions.” Rayi said the CDC’s CSI programme has over the 2013/14 financial year focused its resources over a number of areas, spending in excess of R12-million on turnkey projects that include Coega’s Maths and Science, Driver Training Programmes and a bursary initiative. “The CDC’s involvement with and ability to assist needy communities is commendable and a key reason government saw fit to establish state-owned entities,” added Rayi. The CDC has been able to make strategic interventions that impact not only beneficiaries, but also their families and immediate communities and show a collective commitment to changing the lives of the people for the better. “Coega’s partnership with the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality on this initiative illustrates one of the many good stories we should continue telling about freedom and democracy,” said Economic Development and Planning, Councilor Babalwa Lobishe.

Rory is back with a bang! REPORTER AFTER 5 years of entertaining overseas, Rory McLaren is staging his new show, Evergreen, in Port Elizabeth. ALL people have dreams. Some may be prevented from achieving them. Others might not go that further mile to obtain it. But, the determined will overcome all obstacles in ensuring that they live their dreams to the full... When I was little, I used to dream that one day I would be an inventor of great things. I would wander through the house, picking up electrical equipment to see how each part fitted into each other. I would open appliances and put them back together for the fun of it. I would imagine myself being a computer programmer or designer and running a company. I guess back then I had way too big dreams for a 7-year-old. I did not officially do schooling. My parents had private tutors who tutored us for maths and English and a bit of geography. At the age of 13, I completed my English (Standard 10). I then went onto religious studies for a few years. But, I did not forget about my dream of becoming an inventor. Later, my father bought me a laptop as a gift. For the first time I began messing around with the internal side of the computer. It fascinated me, and I began exploring further. It was then that I decided I wanted to be a computer engineer. In 2010, I decided to embark on my dream. I was told that in order to study for a bachelor’s degree in software engineering, I had to first have a matriculation pass. I had never officially written exams before. I tried enrolling for grade 12 in one of our local schools, but I was told I had to start from a lower grade and have a previous year’s pass. Our local department refused to even accept me for grade 10, because I did not have a grade 9 pass – despite Hill College doing an assessment with me and giving me the green light to study with them. After thorough research, my mother found out about the Cambridge International Exam board (CIE). They allowed me to go straight to the AS levels (which is equivalent to our

grade 12). Thus, I had to search for tutors to help me on subjects I could not manage. I had chosen: English, Arabic, Computers, Accounting, Geography, Business Studies and Maths. I worked hard and did not give up. It was then that I learnt about the joys of self-studying. I learnt that one needn’t be an above average student to self learn. If you are willing to take it on, then know that everything is possible! In 2012 I decided to get online tutors as I knew in South Africa, there were good exam centres. Thankfully in 2012, I found good tutors who were accredited with CIE. In 2013, I sat for my final exams and passed all my subjects. I feel a great sense of satisfaction and inner peace, in knowing that I did the impossible – but succeeded. I think about kids who studied their entire life at school (from grade 1 to grade 12) but did not manage to pass grade 12, yet I only studied for 3 years (cramming 11 years of information in my brain) and I succeeded in passing. I am now searching for a suitable university to apply to study for my original dream – a bachelor’s degree in software engineering. I hope to obtain a scholarship and I still dream of being an inventor. I hope my story serves as an inspiration to those who have given up on their dreams, and aim to remind them that nothing is impossible. Hamilton Takes Four In A Row NEVER before in the 21st century has Formula 1 known the level of dominance being imposed on the Mercedes team. Lewis Hamilton once again obliterated the field with a preposterously dominant victory in the Spanish GP. The Spanish GP followed the 2014 script to a tee, complete with a fiery inter-team battle between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. Straight away the Mercedes pair opened a substantial lead over the rest of the field and set about duking it victory between the pair of them. A split strategy gave Rosberg the advantage in the closing laps of the race but Hamilton determinedly held off his faster teammate for his fourth consecutive victory. Sebastian Vettel delivered the drive of the day with a charge from fifteenth on the grid. The four-time champion put together several bold overtaking moves and three-stop strategy to finish fourth on the day. The German’s weekend had been a struggle throughout as he missed out on Friday’s running and suffered a gearbox failure in qualifying. Nevertheless, this recovery drive and the ability to fight amongst some of the frontrunners will provide much confidence to the recovering Red Bull team. “I think this weekend from the team point of view was good with third and fourth, but at the next race we’ll attack again,” said Vettel. ing the Australian his first official podium in Formula 1. Despite easily securing the third step of the podium Ricciardo and Red Bull should be far from pleased with their performance. The number 3 car ended the saw the chequered flag more than half a minute later than race-winner Hamilton. Not Ferrari, not Brawn, not even Red Bull ever possessed an advantage as devastating as that of Mercedes. A performance gap of nearly two seconds a lap in race trim is surely as demoralising as it can get for the rest of the field. The French driver continued to impress in the upgraded Lotus as he held off both Ferrari drivers during the opening stint of the race. However, a sensor calibration issue, which caused a loss of power, hampered his performance. Grosjean eventually finished eighth overall. The much needed improvement for Ferrari was nowhere to be found as both drivers finished nearly a lap down on Mercedes. Beaten by both Red Bulls and the Williams of Valtteri Bottas in Spain the

Ferrari F14T was nothing more than a miserable pile of carbon fibre not worth the red paint it’s covered with. Seventh and eighth means there are few positives to take from Spain and at this stage the Maranello team don’t need a clean slate, they need a brand-new drawing board. The good news is that it can hardly get any worse for the scarlet Ferraris and that the only way for them to go is up, slowly, but surely. With the exception of retirement in the first race of the season Lewis Hamilton has been scarily close to perfection in 2014. He has rekindled his near unbeatable qualifying pace and is driving with the resolve and passion of a Formula 1 champion. It’s said that the first person a driver has to beat is his teammate. Lewis Hamilton’s four race wins on the trot have been the most significant victories against Rosberg but Hamilton has also been waging a full-on mental war outside the car. There is little chance that Lewis Hamilton thinks himself slower than anyone around any track. However, in Spain, he was determined to emphasise his teammate’s superior speed around Catalunya. He then took pole position and won the race, shrewdly inferring that he’d beaten his ‘faster’ teammate and winning the psychological battle in the process. Over to you Nico.

LAST Friday night Callies crushed Motherwell Academy 9 nil at Londt Park. It was absolute one way traffic with Motherwell Academy showing very little resistance. The game went into the halftime break with Callies leading by six with a brace each from Kurt Petersen and Jonathan Hophing and Joshua Knipp and Zaahid Dolley finding the back of the net. Companies tackle Investec Night Relay TOMORROW evening (Thu 15th) sees the first round of the Investec Night Relay with over 75 business, social and club teams expected to take part in a Corporate challenge running and walking relay event around the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium and Lake precinct. The Investec Night Relay, consisting of 4 race nights between 15th May and the 14th August this year, is hosted by Access Management and supported by Kingfisher FM, City Lodge Hotels Group, the EC Group and the city through Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism. Teams are made up of 5 runners or 3 walkers and will compete against each other in a relay

format with each team member tackling the 5km loop around the Stadium precinct. Bright clothes, glow in the dark or trail run lights are encouraged to add to the atmosphere of the event with organisers selling glow in the dark items through the event website. The Investec Night Relay is now in its 4th year after having been started through an initiative of the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA) to highlight urban renewal in the Sydenham area around the Stadium. This year the event supports the ACVV Kamvalethu Drop-in Centre, the only drop-in centre for street children in the city, which is

situated near the Stadium precinct. All competing companies and participants are encouraged to bring something to donate to the charity on race nights and are strongly advised not to give to beggars at traffic lights as this is often what keeps the street kids on the street and/or supports drug or alcohol problems. Teams that haven’t already registered can try do so soonest online (www.investecnightrelay.co.za) or if online entries have already closed, late entries will be possible at the event from 4.30pm Thursday evening. Team captains may collect team numbers

and race baton between 4.30pm and 5.30pm race night at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium World of Windows lounge with access only possible from Lakeside. All participants and spectators are asked to park on the lakeside (grassed area between the Stadium and North End Lake) with the relay starting at 6pm. Relax – there’s every reason to smile REMEMBER THE prep school game “Gaining Ground”? It went on interminably from one end of an unmarked field to the other. A clean catch won you five paces forward. You “scored” when the opposition was unable to prevent your team’s kick slamming into the boundary at their end of the field. It was silly, but it kept you out of mischief after class. This, more or less, was the sort of game the Sharks and Brumbies played in Canberra last weekend. It bore little relation to rugby. The Brumbies, coached by Jake White six months ago, took the encounter 16-9 against the Sharks, whom the same Mr White, now resident in Durban, is currently coaching. Don’t take this the wrong way. It ‘s minimum risk rugby – the sort of simplified approach that might well be employed by the winning team in next year’s World Cup final in London. In “Gaining Ground” to break the monotony and score requires accuracy. Unhappily, in a rugby version of that game Frans Steyn had a bad day at the office, missing three out of six penalties. So do the maths: those

points would have won the Canberra encounter for the Sharks 18-16. Despite this the Sharks continue to dominate the Super Rugby log with 36 points from nearest rivals, Chiefs, on 35. But here’s one thing that’s certain: if White’s Sharks hope to maintain their challenge for the playoffs, they’re going to have to pull their black and white socks up and tighten their garters to make sure they stay up! However, on the bright side, looking ahead to Super Rugby’s Four Nations Championship, in spite of injuries incurred along the way, the emergence of fresh talent has been truly heartening – indeed, thoroughly deserving of commentator, Hugh Bladen’s jubilant “Un-be-liev-able!” war cry that rings out from TV sets countrywide all winter long. Certainly, there’s plenty of reason to smile. Top of the talent list are a bunch of youngsters emerging from the rank and file as the season progresses. For some it could climax in the donning of the coveted green and gold jersey that’s every prominent player’s dream. Top of the hopefuls could be the inspira-

tional Lions captain and No. 8, Warren Whiteley, a busy worker in all departments of the loose-forward trade, who surely should crack a place in Bok coach Heyneke Meyer’s top 30 as he starts to separate the wheat from the chaff. A player with the Gary Teichman touch, the Lions’ eighthman would not be out of place among the Schalk Burger (hopefully soon to be back to his battering-ram best), Duane Vermeulen, Ryan Kankowski and Willem Alberts brigade. Our playing fields are brimming with burly, unrelenting tight forward talent, while backs of proven or of the fast emerging talent variety, like Damian Allende are plentiful – right down to the Lions’ pint-sized Faf de Klerk.
