violence in the notorious northern areas. Following the installation of the technology, in less than two months more than 800 shots were recorded in Helenvale. Best has, however, now confirmed that according to joint reports from the Metro Police and South African Police Service, there has been a drastic reduction in gunfire in the area. “In December last year, we had 10 days of zero gunfire and in January we had eight days. Through the intervention, there has only been three basic areas where the gunfire is happening. “In the beginning, the shots fired were traceable from close to 20 streets, but we have now confined it to three streets,” Best said. He also added that in the past three months, the Gang Unit has made 17 arrests, directly related to investigating Shotspotter incidents. “These arrests include three attempted

October last year, the police force has seen a massive decline in gunfire incidents in the Helenvale area. This, according to Member of the Mayoral Committee for Safety and Security at Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) John Best. Best was speaking at a joint media conference with the American company, Shotspotter Incorporated, held at the City Hall last week Tuesday. Shotspotter technology entails the strategic placement of acoustic sensors that immediately informs law enforcement entities of gunshots and provides precise information of the location of the crime. olence,” Clark added. NMBM Mayor, Athol Trollip, said they had been on a think tank with experts around civic interventions for the Helenvale area. “The one thing about that community is that you can go there on any given day and it looks like one of those peaceful communities, but then it erupts in violent crime. “People get killed in the crossfire and there’s collateral damage,” Trollip said, adding that he had two instances where he had to visit homes of toddlers who had been killed (both shot in the head). The mayor said the critical thing about shotspotter is that it is inanimate. “Nobody has to tell the police who fired a shot because that comes with extreme intimidation and even results in revenge killings in gang-infested areas. “If we can combine Shotspotter with CCTV, it takes the responsibility away from the society.” Trollip said, providing they can get the necessary funding allocation, the roll-out of this technology will be considered for other crime-ridden areas in future.

Sharing his observations about Shotspotter particularly in South Africa as well as in the United States, Chief Executive Officer of Shotspotter Incorporated Ralph Clark said Nelson Mandela Bay is not unique with respect to the underreporting issue of gun violence. “In the USA, about 10% of all gun violence is reported by residents. When gun violence is not reported, the police cannot respond and as a result, gun violence becomes normalised,” Clark said. He added that gun violence reduction and prevention is a team effort between various technologies as well as between law enforcement and the community. “I am really impressed with the level of cooperation between the local Metro Police and SAPS. By enabling the police to respond to these events in real time, we can then communicate to the community that the police do care and build trusting relationships and community capacity to address gun vi-

New streetlights for Lorraine residents ZELDRÉ STRAUSS SWANEPOEL A TEN-YEAR-LONG struggle to have streetlights erected in an area of Lorraine, which

has been engulfed in darkness, has finally paid off. A total of 20 new streetlights were erected in Mirecourt Avenue, Chalons Avenue and Se-

dan Street in Lorraine recently. Ward 8 Councillor Gustav Rautenbach was the driving force behind having these streetlights erected and said he was happy that residents would now feel safer. “Darkness is a criminal’s best friend. “By providing lighting, we are showing the community that their safety is a priority to us,” Rautenbach said. “The PE Riding Club is also situated in this area and the streetlights will be a great benefit to the club members as well as the visitors to their events.” A few years ago, Rautenbach also championed a movement in the area to have the stretch of gravel road opposite the PE Riding

Club tarred. Lorraine resident Merle van Eck helped to drive the request for streetlights to be erected in Mirecourt Avenue, along with Rautenbach. “Our complex is situated right next to a bushy area and having no lighting at night made us very vulnerable to criminal elements. “It took some time, but we are happy that we now have streetlights,” Van Eck said. Rautenbach emphasised that erecting streetlights and tarring roads were processes that take time. “Once again, this is an example of how things don’t happen overnight, but with enough driving force behind a project, one can achieve one’s goal,” said Rautenbach.

Little mechanic’s (4) dream comes true THANDI SETOKOE HIS biggest wish is to become a mechanic and last week the The Reach for a Dream Foundation did just that – allowing little Jenson Frans (4) to be a mechanic for a day. This Port Elizabeth-based boy, who suffers from a cardiac condition, dreams of one day following in the footsteps of his father, Glenville, who is a mechanic. The foundation made Jenson’s dream a reality by arranging for him to experience first-hand being a mechanic at Solly’s Auto City’s panel beaters. According to Reach for a Dream co-

ordinator Heather Mazomba, the organisation aims to fulfil the dreams of children who are fighting life-threatening illnesses. “We believe that no child should live without hope and we seek as far as possible to fulfil the dreams of children fighting life-threatening illnesses. We believe in the power of dreams and encourage children to use their dreams to fight for their lives and overcome serious illness,” Mazomba said. Jolene Frans, Jenson’s mother, said her boy will forever hold the special day close to his heart. “I’m so happy. This is something he has always wanted to do. He really loves cars and motorcycles and al-

ways watches in awe when his father is working on cars,” Jolene said. Jenson’s exciting day included a ride in a sports car, revving a motorcycle, visiting the spray painting room and an opportunity to fix a car. A highlight for Jenson, who enjoyed every minute of the outing, was using the spanner to fix a car engine as well as his gifts, which included toy cars and a tool box from both the organisation and Solly’s workshop. “I love my cars and I’m going to play with them when I get home,” the ecstatic young mechanic said. Jenson is due to undergo open-heart surgery next month and his family is more than certain that this little, happy, spirited fellow will pull through.

; The day was not only packed with tasks for the young mechanic, but he was also showered with gifts from both the Reach for a Dream Founda tion as well as Solly’s Auto City’s panel beaters. General manager at Solly’s Auto City Scott Bricknell assisted Jenson with unwrap ping his gifts.

Art competition to inspire youth

ZELDRÉ STRAUSS SWANEPOEL GROWING up in areas known for gang violence should never let the youth believe that the same fate of gangsterism awaits them. Local artists are running an art competition for schools in the northern areas to not only uncover hidden talent but to inspire children to rise above their circumstances. The competition, called “I am not a gangster”, is facilitated by the Cultural Freedom Art Gallery which is situated in the Cleary Park Shopping Centre. This gallery opened its doors in August last year and is open from 10am to 4pm every day, and also offers art classes every Saturday. The gallery is run by artists Antonio Leeuwskieter and Wellington Phepheng and currently showcases their work as well as the work of Malvery Stanley – each artist bringing their own unique style to the table. “Our aim at the Cultural Freedom Gallery is to give artists in the northern areas an opportunity to be exposed, especially those who are not able to exhibit their work at the main galleries in the city,” said Leeuwskieter. He said that the idea of the art competition came after years of observing children in gang-infested suburbs who do not have positive role models and eventually fall prey to social ills. “We want to show these kids that they can achieve anything if they put their minds to it. They don’t have to rob and steal and end up in jail. We want to change their mindset through the medium of art.” The competition is open to all pri-

Everyone is very excited about the competition and we hope to make it an annual event. We also hope to secure some sponsors because currently we have none.” The brief is to draw anything to the theme of “I am not a gangster” and entrants will not be judged on their technical abilities. All the entries will be showcased at a cocktail event and an independent judging panel will choose the winning concept. The winner’s artwork will be exhibited for a week at the Cultural Freedom Gallery and the gallery will donate a painting to the winner’s school. The competition closes on March 2. For info contact Leeuwskieter on 081 721 1107 or cfartgallery01@gmail.com

Chevandré Cunningham (16) from Otto du Plessis High School is also taking part in the competition. He attends the weekly art classes at the Cultural Freedom Art Museum.

CHOC calls on Bay to paint city blue THANDI SETOKOE AS a means of raising awareness of childhood cancer and to express support for children with cancer, survivors and their families, the Port Elizabeth branch of CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation SA is calling on all Bay residents to paint the city blue on International Childhood Cancer Day (ICCD) tomorrow. According to Anne-Marie Stephenson, fundraising manger of CHOC Eastern Cape, in South Africa an estimated 70 to 80 children per million are diagnosed with cancer every year. A further estimated 500 children die of childhood cancer each year without being diagnosed or treated. “The sad reality is that childhood cancers are sometimes overlooked or misdiagnosed because early symptoms are mistakenly attributed to more common injuries or illnesses,” Stephenson said. “However, if diagnosed early and treated by a paediatric oncologist, the survival rate can be 80%.” She said that a lack of community awareness, including access to medical facilities due to finances and distance, are also a huge challenge. “General practitioners don’t often see to some cases due to a shortage of health facilities. “The cost of transport and time to travel makes it difficult for parents to have their children assessed and, so, more often than not they are sick for a long time before urgency forces them to make the sacrifice of expensive

travel to the nearby health care facilities.” In support of ICCD, residents can join CHOC in wearing blue with the “have a heart for children with cancer” ICCD badge or heart pin tomorrow. The ICCD badges and heart-shaped chocolates will be on sale from the PE CHOC office for R10 each, while the heart pins are priced at R20. CHOC currently supports 50 children with cancer who are receiving regular treatment at the hospital – 40 of whom are active chemotherapy patients and 10 to 15 are seriously ill and admitted to the ward. Early warning signs of childhood cancer in clude: ) Lumps: It can be in the abdomen, pelvis, head, neck, limbs, testes and glands. Every lump must be referred. A TB lump should go away after two weeks of treatment, if not, seek help. ) Unexplained fever for more than two weeks. Unexplained loss of weight, appetite, fatigue and easy bruising or bleeding. ) Bone pain: Aching bones, joints, back and easy fractures. A child should never get backache. Such aches are usually associated with leukemia. Aching bones and joints indicates cancer of the bone. ) Neurological: Regression of milestones. Change or deterioration in walk or balance or speech (slurred speech). Headache for more than a week, with or without vomiting. Enlarging head. ) Eye: White spot in the eye can be a cancer of the eye. A new squint or new blindness can be a cancer of the brain.

City return to Everton FC honours outstanding players, legends winning ways SELBY MADIKANE

SELBY MADIKANE MOTHERWELL-BASED semi-professional side Lion City were back to their winning ways when they punished FC Buffalo 5-0 during their ABC Motsepe League game at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium on Saturday. City did not show mercy to the once-feared East London side, as they kept them on the back foot. Buffalo goalkeeper Nkuthalo Makapela was the busier of the two, while Zukisani Ngalo and Freedom Funani made things worse for Buffalo’s defence. Ngalo broke the ice after he scored a spectacular goal. City increased the score to 2-0 following a top-notch goal that was scored by Zukisa Makgopa. City went to the break leading the match 3-0 after Ngalo scored his second goal. The visitors were outclassed in all aspects. Funani penetrated between the defenders of the visiting side and finally dribbled past goalkeeper Makapela in order to score an easy goal. The late super substitute, Ludwe Sonjica, banged in his goal from his first touch to seal the victory, 5-0.

ONE of the Zwide Football Association’s (Zwifa) oldest clubs, Everton FC, held a function at Bisset Street Park on Sunday to honour its outstanding players and legends and to unveil its new kits for the 2018 league season. Zwifa deputy president, Bhongo Nombiba, highlighted that the players of Everton FC should work together with their executive committee in order to accomplish their goals. According to Everton FC president, Zolile Majola, the event was held to motivate the players and juniors for dedicating their time to the sport. “This event is held to give awards

to our teams, which are u/11, u/13, u/15, u/17 and seniors, for their efforts during the past season. I am fully convinced that these awards will motivate and encourage our players. “Furthermore, the new kits that we unveiled today will motivate and boost the morale of our teams. “We used National Lottery Trust distribution fund resources to purchase these kits.” The club’s major challenge is finding a field to practice. “We use the Bisset Street Park for training purposes which is very small.” ; Everton FC’s u/11 team with coach, Mzwabantu Quntu. Youth tournament a huge success SELBY MADIKANE HUNDREDS of enthusiastic youth flocked to the Nelson Mandela Freedom Peace Park in Showvillage to watch Young Romans FC’s Back to School Inaugural Youth Tournament on Saturday and Sunday. Young Romans general secretary Thobela Dedeka said the aim of the tournament was to keep the youth in sport so that they refrain from getting involved in crime. “Sport changes the bad behaviour into good behaviour. This tournament is planned as the proper platform to instil discipline into the players who will be disciplined future stars.” The tournament, in which the u/13 and u/15 teams took part, was played in a straight knockout format. In the u/13 finals, Lion City gave good ac-

count of themselves despite their 2-1 loss to Real Strikers. Strikers went home with the prize of R450, a floating trophy and 16 gold medals, while City received the prize of R250 and 16 silver medals. Lion City took the honours in their 4-2 victory over Motherwell Academy during the u/15 finals. City scooped the first prize of R650, a floating trophy and 16 gold medals. Motherwell Academy went home with the prize of R450 and silver medals. Dekeda stated that everything went according to plan and revealed that they plan to make the event an annual one. “I want to thank the clubs that took part in our inaugural tournament. We watched football of high standard throughout the tournament. The match officials also did a great deal of work. We look forward to organising this tournament next year. “We know where we should improve.”
