Family fun for animal welfare The Animal Welfare Society Port Elizabeth will host their first-ever family fun day in conjunction with their second annual Summer Sleepover at their premises in Victoria Drive, Walmer, on March 24. During the summer sleepover, invited participants commit to raising funds on behalf of the society for their veterinary expenses and spending a night at the shelter. The fun day, however, is open to the public and offers a picnic style vibe with music and live entertainment. Patrons can browse a selection of stalls and join in the fun, which will include donkey rides with the EC Horse Care Unit, face painting and a jumping castle. The family fun day will take place from 12:00 to 16:00. A donation of R10 will secure entrance to the fun day zone. The first phase of construction is expected to commence in September this year, after the completion of the Ironman 70.3 World Championships and will include the redevelopment of the existing areas. “This will be from the Hobie Beach entrance through to News Café and down to the Spur area. What we are going to try and replicate in that area is something similar to Stanley Street. So, that will became PE’s favourite place with restaurants and various retail components.” This phase is expected to be completed in April next year. Thereafter the big construction phase will take place
until April 2020. Van Vuuren said they were now in the pre-letting phase to secure tenants. The official announcement of the three major national tenants would take place in July. “Unfortunately, for now we can’t mention the names of the major retail outlets who have agreed to be part of the
mall until the official launch in July.” He further added that a programme plan of the development had been submitted to the Eastern Cape Gaming Board. “We are expecting feedback in the next two weeks and thereafter we will be able to move forward based on the timelines,” Van Vuuren said.

NMBM embarks on survey to improve service delivery REPORTER THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s (NMBM) efforts to accelerate service delivery and achieve customer satisfaction are in full swing. Following an intensive and successful draft and adoption of the Integrated Development Plan (IDP), which included public participation, implementation is currently underway. In a recent statement, the NMBM said, “As implementation continues, the city has noted that feedback from the residents was critical in improving the services. “It will not only assist the leadership and the administration in measuring their performance; it will also give an indication about the areas that need urgent improvement.”
Nelson Mandela Bay has launched its customer satisfaction survey and will continue to gather information until April 26. The main purpose of the survey is to measure the levels of satisfaction with the municipality’s services. Residents will be asked to rate their experience of service delivery over the last 12 months. “The survey will assist the municipality in identifying service delivery shortfalls (as identified by its residents) and help the municipality to put plans in place to improve services in future,” the NMBM explained. A group of households will be randomly selected in each Nelson Mandela Bay ward. The head of the household or any other person aged 18 and older, who is capable of responding to the questions, will be interviewed by the officials.
“A municipal fieldworker will carry a municipal ID card containing his or her name, ward number and G number. The contact details of Assistant Director: Policy and Research, Sheona Claasen, are printed on the ID card. “During this survey, the municipality would like to assure residents that no information that could identify the respondent will be attached to the questionnaire at the time of analysing the data. “Employees involved in the research will be required to sign confidentiality agreements and information will be stored in a secure place.” The NMBM further stated that residents’ responses will be captured and analysed at metro and ward level and that no individual will be identified in the final report. A report, containing the findings of the research and recommendations, will be
compiled in June 2018. Conclusive findings will be made available on the municipal website at www.nelsonmandelabay.gov.za and in municipal libraries. “Residents are requested to welcome the survey officials into their homes and cooperate with them. “The city would like to send a strong warning to those who might see this project as an opportunity to commit criminal activities by pretending to be fieldworkers,” the NMBM said. “Metro Police, working closely with the SAPS, will be on alert in the areas where the fieldworkers operate to guard against that and protect both the residents and the fieldworkers.” ) For more info contact NMBM customer care on 041 506 5555 or customercare@mandelametro.gov.za.
Trophy designs invited for Ironman World Championship REPORTER NELSON Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) has invited Eastern Cape artists to compete for a chance to design the coveted trophies for the winners of the first-ever Ironman 70.3 World Championship hosted by an African country in September this year. Thousands of triathletes from across the world will be flocking to the Bay to compete on September 1 and 2 for the opportunity to raise those trophies after completing a gruelling swim, cycle and running course. NMBM Member of the Mayoral Committee for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Siyasanga Sijadu said the winner of this competi-
tion would be catapulted into the international limelight as the cream of the Ironman triathlon would be competing on the day. “We are inviting artists to submit concept designs of the winning male and female trophies before or on March 16 (this Friday). “Since we are only in the first round of submissions, artists are not expected to present final artworks and their creations can be in any format. “It goes without saying that we would like to see outstanding and innovative designs as the trophies are an integral part of the overall experience of the athletes. “It is therefore crucial that our designs stand out and improve on what other host cities had on their winning podia,” Sijadu said.

The first round of selections will take place at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan (NMM) Art Museum on Tuesday March 20. Entry forms will be available from the NMM Art Museum, the Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture buildings in St George’s Park and at local galleries. They will also be available to download from the NMM Art Museum and NMBM websites. The concept proposals must not exceed a space of 2m x 2m when fully installed. From these proposals, 10 concept trophies will be selected to take part in the next stage of the competition. The top 10 presentations will be displayed at the Standard Bank Ironman African Cham-
pionship in April when the public will be able to vote for their favourite design at the exhibition. The winner will be selected at the end of April and receive the prize money of R10 000. Technical support will be provided for the final production of the two awards to be presented to the top male and female athletes. Closing date for submissions is Friday March 16 and all submissions must be presented on this date to the NMM Art Museum between 9:00 and 17:00. REPORTER THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has announced a rejuvenated Splash Festival programme which includes a show by musician Cassper Nyovest, water sport extravaganza and an improved entertainment programme for the whole family. Speaking during the media launch at Hobie Beach, Executive Mayor Athol Trollip said he hoped that local and international visitors, drawn in by the start of the City Surf Series and other exciting offerings, would enjoy Port Elizabeth and hopefully return in the future as well as spread the good word of our city to the rest of the world. “Last year it was great to see how well our homegrown surfing talent fared in the Nelson Mandela Bay Pro Surf, the start of the City Surf Series, in front of their home crowd. “We expect record crowds and hope they will also have a record amount of fun,” said Trollip. The mainstay annual Splash Festival will take place from March 30 to April 2, with headliner Nyovest entertaining people on April 1 at Wells Estate from 12:00. The Nelson Mandela Bay Pro Surf, Beach Volleyball, five-a-side rugby, jet ski races, deep sea angling and musical performances from local musical talent, such as Genesix and Chapter 3, are just some of the many attractions. Kriba Reddy, vice president of Volleyball South Africa, expressed how proud his organisation was to be part of the Splash Festival for the 29th time and reminisced about how competitive beach volleyball had become over the years since it first came to Port Elizabeth many years ago. “We have a long history with the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and played national tournaments here. “From our humble beginnings in the city, we grew exponentially to become a very popular sport followed closely locally, nationally and even internationally,” said Reddy. Rob Niterl, from the South African Jet Ski Sport Boat Association, said 2018 was the fourth year that they were involved in the festival and emphasised that their participation in Nelson Mandela Bay is a highlight on their sporting calendar. “We have been around for about 30 years and found your beaches and the hospitality at the festival to be great.” “We have twelve different races with three heats for each of those races and will be fielding big names on the South African Jet Ski circuit this year,” said Niterl. The Sport, Arts and Culture Directorate has also installed 40 lockers at Hobie Beach that can be rented by beachgoers, including a facility to charge cellphones, powered by solar energy.

Local champion (6) invited to compete in SA chess event NWABISA FUNDE PARSONS Hill Grand Prix Junior chess player Garen Twigg (6) has the opportunity to attend one of the most prestigious chess events in the country. Garen was invited to compete against other chess champions from across the country at the South African Junior Chess Closed Championship (SAJCCC). At the young age of five years old, Garen entered his first chess trials in 2017, taking home three gold medals, one silver and one bronze. “Garen’s determination and passion for chess has resulted in his invitation to attend the SAJCCC where

participation in the event is by invitation only,” said Garen’s mother, Shae Twigg. The SAJCCC will be held at the Kopanong Hotel and Conference Centre in Benoni, Johannesburg from April 1 to 7. The only thing standing in his way is the cost of the accommodation and travel fares, which participants are expected to pay themselves. The Twigg family is currently busy with various fundraising efforts and Garen has a page on the backabuddy crowdfunding page: www.backabuddy.co.za/get-garron-chess. “Garen is very passionate about chess and is extremely excited about the championships. We truly appreciate everyone who is helping us to make his dream come true.”
Heroic rescue by Harvest lifeguards
Harvest Christian School learners Nathan Seton-Smith (left) and Liso Kwaza recently performed a gallant deed when they rescued a girl who was knocked unconscious while surfing at Shark Rock Beach. The duo were the lifeguards on duty that day. Families gear up for beach challenge MICHAEL ZOETMULDER THE popular City Lodge Hotels Group 3 Beaches Challenge takes place at the Summerstrand Surf Lifesaving Club, Pollok Beach, on Sunday. Established in 2012, this fun event is an exciting individual or team race along the stunning Port Elizabeth beachfront for open water swimmers, surf lifesavers, stand-up paddlers and runners.
Teams are split into two groups: duo teams or quad teams, where the duo team comprises a swimmer and a runner while a quad team has three swimmers and one runner. The event starts at Pollok Beach with the swimmers and lifesavers setting off on a 1.6km stretch to Hobie Beach before coming out of the water to round a Score Energy Drink transition station and/or tag their teammate. Stage two is a 800m stretch from Hobie Beach to Humewood Beach and stage three is 1.1km from Humewood Beach to Kings Beach, while
