The Springbok rugby team has been in Port Elizabeth for more than a week and the excitement around their presence in the Friendly City is tangible. The Bokke will face the team from Argenti na in the Castle Lager Rugby Championship that will be staged at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium this Saturday, August 19. The Bokke have been busy during their first week’s stay in PE. They attended the #SA2023 Rugby World Cup Bid flag hoisting event at the Donkin Reserve and completed a colourful #LoveRugby mural on one side of the King’s Beach lifesaving club as part of SA Rugby’s ongoing #LoveRugby initiative. This morning they will be visiting the Ithembelihle High School for a #LoveRugby School activation. The last chance to see the Bokke in action before the test match will be today from 3pm at the SA Rugby coaching clinic at the stadium. The team will be announced tomorrow at 2pm. “Ek is lief vir diere en katte is my
gunsteling. Ek self het perd gery toe ek jonger was.

Successful weekend results for police Ghost Squad REPORTER THE Nelson Mandela Bay Metro Police’s Ghost Squad reported a number of notices issued the weekend following operations held with the South African Police Service (SAPS). The Ghost Squad was launched by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality specifically to curb traffic law violations. From Friday, August 11, notices were issued for, among other things, unroadworthy motor vehicles, driving on the shoulder of the roadway, illegal parking, unlicenced and unregistered vehicles, totalling R37 700. On Saturday, Au-
gust 12, in joint operations with Walmer SAPS, notices for the same transgressions totalled R43 000. According to Metro Police Chief Yolande Faro, two people were arrested for drunken driving. “One of the members stopped a white Toyota Tazz sedan in 17th Avenue, Walmer at 1:50am. “He approached the vehicle with SAPS members. “There were five occupants in the vehicle, three men and two women. “The vehicle was checked at the metro’s radio control room as the number plate was not corresponding with the licence disc. “The vehicle was then confirmed as a stolen vehicle,” Faro said.
“The vehicle and occupants were searched and an illegal firearm with a full magazine was found under the driver’s seat. “The driver was arrested and all the occupants were detained at the Walmer SAPS station.” Humewood SAPS also arrested one person for drunken driving. In a joint operation with Mount Road SAPS, three arrests were made for the possession of 200 Mandrax tablets. “In that operation, a suspect was arrested for an unlicensed firearm and notices were issued for, among other things, parking on the sidewalk and unlicenced vehicles, totalling R9 250,” Faro said.

COEGA DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION (CDC)
Diverse energy approach boasts well for Eastern Cape REPORTER THE Coega Development Corporation (CDC) recently hosted the Minister of Energy, Mamokolo Kubayi, who recommitted the Coega SEZ as one of the preferred locations identified to host the gas-to-power plant and identified the CDC as one of the important partners to assist the department in implementing some of the projects that are currently going at a snail’s pace. Having created a foundation for Coega’s readiness for energy projects since the early 2000s, the CDC has been successfull in attracting investors from the energy sector as a result of a decade of extensive work preparing for more energy projects. “For us, what is of utmost importance is developing an industrial and commercial energy offtake market in the Eastern Cape and specifically the NMB,” said Sandisiwe
Ncemane, CDC’s energy sector manager. During the Gas Options Conference last year, Coega SEZ was identified as one of the locations to host the gas-to-power plant, with an allocation of 1000MW. This has initiated an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) study of the gas-topower programme and strategically explored the SEZ’s full potential beyond the current allocation of 1000MW. The CDC has successfully attracted R4 billion’s worth of energy projects. These include the R3,5 billion Dedisa Peaking Power Plant, with a capacity of 342MW. The 12 hectares lay down area in Zone 1 of the Coega SEZ is located on the boundary between the Port of Ngqura and the Coega SEZ and has played an integral role in the regional connection of wind power. Complementing this project is also a million rand 48KW solar plant, which feeds power to the CDC’s head office. < Congratulating the CDC on winning the Vision 2030 Awards on Infrastructure Development and its commitment to the realisa tion of the national develop ment plan objectives. Make a difference with Keep Caring cupcake campaign ANIKA DE BEER AMY Erasmus, a young woman with a big heart, is back again with a new goal in mind for her Keep Caring initiative that was launched earlier this year. Erasmus (18) decided to use her gap year to give back to the less fortunate which led to the establishment of Keep Caring in April. With the long winter months looming ahead, her first mission was to run a clothing drive. It turned out to be a smashing success. “Needless to say, I had no idea what I had gotten myself into. After counting my first 100 or so articles I was ecstatic, but, shortly after, I reached 1 000 and it didn’t stop there,” she said. In the end, she collected nearly 3 000 articles
of clothing (excluding shoes, scarfs, beanies, socks, etc.), more than 30 blankets and 256kg of food which was distributed among various charities. “Since the clothing drive, I have donated to Save-a-Pet and helped at Love Story’s annual blanket handout, where we donated 21 blankets. “I started Keep Caring as an 18 year old determined to make a difference. “My motto is ‘make your drop in the ocean’ because the change I make might be small, but if everybody made a little change it would make a big difference.” Erasmus is now running the Keep Caring Cupcakes for a Cause campaign, selling chocolate choc chip cupcakes to raise funds for Domestic Animal Care to sterilise animals.
“This year has been an eye-opening experience and I’ve been very fortunate to have my parents, friends and Houdini support me,” Erasmus said. The campaign will run until August 22. Cupcakes can be pre-ordered and will also be available at the Merryvale Market Day on August 26. Contact Amy Erasmus at hello@keepcaring.co.za or go to www.keepcaring.co.za.

PE eateries to compete in Food Fest semis REPORTER THREE eateries from Port Elizabeth will be competing against 12 other restaurants and takeaway shops in the 2017 Coca-Cola Food Fest regional semi-finals this weekend. Up to 4 000 eateries registered to participate in this year’s competition and more than 40 000 public votes were cast in the 2017 Coca-Cola Food Festival to select the regional semi-finalists. The three semi-finalists from Port Elizabeth are the Yi Pin Restaurant in Summerstrand, Delhi Snacks in Korsten and Roast Mas-
ter Café in Walmer. The general public nominated their favourite eateries in three different categories - from takeaways through to fine dining restaurants. They then had the opportunity to vote for their favourites. The three eateries, representing Port Elizabeth, will come up against 12 other eateries from the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal in one of two regional semi-final events this Saturday. Finalists will be selected according to three categories defined as “on-the-go” meals that can be eaten off the premises, “traditional” plated meals that can be eaten while seated at the premises, and “gour-
met” which is defined as speciality cuisine dishes. The 12 finalists representing the top three meal categories selected at the two events will each receive R22 500. The final round will take place in Johannesburg on September 21, where the winner in each category will receive R150 000, 60% of which will be paid in cash, while the rest will be used to upgrade the eatery. Voters can also win their share of R140 000, which includes random draws for R5 to R10 airtime and daily cash prizes, as well as cookware to the value of R35 000.
Acclaimed Durban artist to perform in PE REPORTER PORT Elizabeth patrons will get a chance to be entertained by the acclaimed Durban artist, Rowan Stuart, on Wednesday, August 23, as he embarks on a solo national tour. Stuart is known for having created an inimitable brand of “folk-meets-pop” music, seamlessly crossing over from acoustic singer-songwriter to radio-charting pop artist, while retaining his signature depth of content. Recalling Sting’s imaginative storytelling, Death Cab For Cutie’s sense of space and beauty and John Mayer’s tight grooves, Stuart uses his notable prowess on the guitar as the foundation for his creativity. His career came into full swing in 2014 with the release of his acoustic album, Hidden Doors. He has since toured South Africa and opened for some of the country’s biggest acts, including The Parlotones, Prime Circle and Matthew Mole. A maestro guitarist, he is a brand ambassador for Cort Guitars. His single, Silver Balloon, released late last year, was playlisted on major radio stations across South Africa, including 5FM, East Coast Radio, Algoa FM, KFM and 947. “I’m a natural introvert, and I live mostly in my head. Contestants will be selected from the audience each day to make their smoothies to be judged by the Boardwalk’s chefs and winners stand to win amazing prizes. The first 500 visitors will receive a free Milki and kids can meet the mascot, Milki Moo. The Kids and Baby Expo will offer the same
jam-packed weekend of fun that kids have got to know, love and look forward to at each year’s event, from pedal go-carts, action cricket, kicking nets, bike park to face painting, sand art and the popular soft play area for toddlers. Fun is certainly centred around the kids, but parents can also look out for special offers, as well as exhibitor competitions and product sampling opportunities, where all the comfort and convenience is under one roof. This year sees the launch of a brand-new initiative which will also be held at the Boardwalk and will dovetail with the second day of the expo. Aimed at parents, au pairs, nannies, and preschool teachers, working with children under the age of three, the Parenting 911 workshop will be held at the Boardwalk Conference Centre on Saturday, September 30 from 9am to 12.30pm. The Parenting 911 workshop, presented by ecBF, Early Childhood Business Forum, will cover the following topics presented by field experts: Musickin through mothering – influence of music on learning and mothering, de-stressing parent and child, sensory behaviour, and discipline with love. Registration will open online from August 23. Register online on www.harwoodevents.co.za/parenting911. The eighth Kids & Baby Expo will include the very best of:indoor entertainment and fun, creativity and crafts, family wellness and nutrition, growth and education, furniture and decor, clothing and sport, photography and home appliances, travel and leisure, and food and drink.
The list is endless! And with all the delights of the Boardwalk on the expo’s doorstep one can truly turn it into a weekend of fun for the whole family! Nearly 100 exhibitors will be selling and marketing their products and services to the family market, including expectant parents, parents and teachers and is geared for families with children up to the age of 12. Parents will be able to grab a bite or browse to their hearts content as there will be ample activities to keep the kids busy. The expo will be held in the expansive Boardwalk Exhibition Level, which offers a safe, secure and weather-proof environment, while including a comfortable baby-changing area and private feeding area for new moms. Entrance will be R40 for adults and R25 for kids but once inside all kids entertainment is free. Pre-expo tickets can be booked on line on www.harwoodevents and will be sold at the entrance to the expo on the weekend. Also watch out for the Kids Rule! family competition which launches next week Wednesday, August 23 with a whopping package of prizes. For continual updates follow the ‘Kids and Baby Expo’ Facebook page. ; Connor Mote, 6, left, and Quinn Foreman, 6, recently met Milki Moo, the Milki Mascot, who will be at the PE Express First Choice Kids and Baby Expo. ADVERTORIAL: BANSDAS JEWELLERS
Local business celebrates 110 years THIS year happens to be a very special year for the Bansda family of Port Elizabeth. They are celebrating a milestone that marks confidence in trading in the Friendly City – 110 years in the retail sector. Established in 1907, the Bansda family has traded in various commodities over the years. “Our grandfather started his first business as a shoe repairer at 24 Parliament Street in Central. His children and grandchildren subsequently ventured into various businesses over the years and Bansdas Jewellers still carries the family trading name in Port Elizabeth,” said Mahesh Narotam Bansda, Bansdas Jewellers’ proprietor. “My late father, Shantilal Narotam Bansda, and my 90-year-old mother moved their business from Central and South End to Korsten
in 1969 as a result of the Group Areas Act and we traded at 68 Cottrell Street for 45 years.” When his parents retired in 1983, Mahesh changed the business into a jewellery store and traded in the old premises for 31 years before making the bold move to the Stanford Square Shopping Centre in November 2014. “It was a tough decision to move the premises with Christmas just around the corner, but we wanted to be in the new premises for the official opening on November 28, 2014. “We have also extended our service to our loyal customers by offering a watch repair service, watch battery replacement, jewellery designing and repairs and engraving.” Bansdas Jewellers stock a large range of 21st birthday keys and accessories to match for that momentous event. As part of their 110th anniversary celebra-
tions, they will host eight lucky draws on October 31 for customers. Prizes include a Daniel Klein watch, a Hallmark watch, leather wallets, sterling silver and stainless steel jewellery, among others. The final prize will be a nine-carat gold la-
dies’ ring valued at R3 000. To qualify for the lucky draws simply spend R200 or more at Bansdas Jewellers before October 31 and stand a chance to win one of eight grand prizes. Terms and conditions apply. Purchases exclude jewellery and watch repairs and items that are on sale. Entrants need to subscribe to Bansdas Jewellers’ database to enter. The competition will be advertised on the Stanford Square Shopping Centre’s Facebook page and 2 000 flyers will be printed and distributed in the area. “We would like to take this opportunity of thanking you, our suppliers and service providers who have supported us over all these years and we hope to continue this business relationship well into the future,” Mahesh concluded.

ADVERTORIAL: WHEELCHAIR WEDNESDAY
SPAR manager shares his fourhour experience THE Eastern Cape promotional and advertising manager at SPAR, Alan Stapleton, with the help of his colleague, Devon Smith, took on the fourhour wheelchair challenge last week. During the four hours participants were allocated certain tasks. These tasks included visiting a shop and buying bottled water from the top shelf of the fridge, going to the post office or PostNet and buying a stamp; thereafter finding the nearest SAPS charge office to stamp a document, drawing money from an outdoor ATM and using a public toilet. Commenting on the tasks, Stapleton said, “It was impossible to reach the top shelf. “However, I was able to stretch and tipple a bottle off the shelf below.” He admits that he could not have the product of his choice and eventually had to ask a customer for assistance. When it came to finding the nearest SAPS charge office, Stapleton said he had difficulty manoeuvring in and out of the car. “The police at Kabega Police Station were very friendly and accommodating.” Describing his trip to the post office he said it was a frightful experience as there was a “steepish” ramp, “My ‘soft, office hands’ needed to toughen up.” When drawing money from an outdoor ATM he said he felt so low and exposed. “I could not prevent ‘lurkers’ from seeing my pin number, and it was a bit of a challenge to see the keyboard. I could have been an easy target to rob. “Using a public toilet was unbelievable,” he described.
“The passage to the toilet was very narrow. There wasn’t enough space; my elbows were knocking against the wall.” To get access one needed a R2 coin, “I didn’t have one but I couldn’t turn the wheelchair in the passage so I had to reverse and call for help.” Fortunately for him, his faithful driver was in close proximity. “Once in the disabled toilet, I first had to juggle with my wallet, cell phone and water that I had bought,” he said. He added that manoeuvring from chair to toilet and back was very difficult. “My trip to the pharmacy was also a hassle. I was very wary of knocking delicate stuff. Luckily the pharmacist was very friendly and accommodating. “The counter was very high though but fortunately I did not have to sign anything.”

I had two big court cases, no job at the time and my girlfriend had left me. My life was upside down, luckily I read about Maama Hawa. She gave me a MAGIC RING and the first day, I won R420 000 in the casino, my financial problems were solved, my court cases were dismissed and I am happily in love now. IT was all joy and smiles on the faces of Flying Eagles and Flamingos’ supporters and players after their sides lifted the winners’ trophies in the Nelson Mandela Bay Netball Association (NMBNA) Women’s Month U/16 and U/19 tournaments at Zwide Stadium on August 9. The tournament was played in a point system, where the side collecting most points is crowned the champions. In the U/16 tournament, Flying Eagles sneaked to the top of the log, lifting the floating trophy high and receiving gold medals and a brand-new set of kit as well. Flamingos were the runners-up. As

such, they went home with a floating trophy and silver medals. Moonlight Stars received the bronze medals after they finished third in the tournament. In the U/19 age group, Flamingos lifted the championship floating trophy, plus gold medals and a new set of kit. Young Neighbours were the runners-up, receiving a floating trophy and silver medals. Mayor Chiefs did not go home emptyhanded, but received bronze medals after finishing third in the tournament. Nelson Mandela Bay Sports Confederation executive member Shakes Ngcukana said that he was excited to watch the teams play exciting games. “The teams kept the spectators excited and players need to be proud of themselves. “The players should not take for granted what they are doing on the field of play. Sport helps the youth to refrain from doing wrong things.”
Major victories move Chiefs to first in Ntando Tours league
NMBNA president Noluntu Dyubhele thanked the players, the umpires, local organising committees (LOCs) and the parents who made the tournament successful. Dyubhele said, “I want to express heartfelt thanks to the sports confederation, the teams, umpires, supporters, parents and the LOCs who made this event successful.” The group of umpires presented a brand-new kitbag to Dyubhele for promoting and developing the game of netball in the previously disadvantaged community. Individual awards were awarded as follows:
Centre-court player of the tournament: Onela Nyongo (Young Neighbours) Best defender of the tournament: Sethu Xasa (Flamingos) Best shooter of the tournament: Litha Mandita (Flamingos) Best male umpire: Thando Heshu Best female umpire: Ntomboyise Joni

Amakhosi thwarted Kuyasa United Brothers 4-0 in their one-sided game which took place at Gal City on Women’s Day, while Chiefs devastated Shooting Stars 3-0 at Zwide Stadium on Sunday. Strikers United made sure that they escaped the relegation axe after collecting six points in their double header as well. Strikers United thumped Young Killers 6-1 on Women’s Day and secured a hard-earned 1-0 triumph against the struggling Kuyasa United Brothers. In another match, in what was described as an entertaining clash, Gal City played to a 1-1 draw against Shining Stars. Sophakama hammered Zwide Celtics 5-0 and in their second game they shared a 1-1 draw with Manchester City. In a derby match, Real Crusaders managed to overcome their neighbours, Shining Stars, 1-0 in their nail-biting clash. Despite going down 2-1 to their neighbours, Young Brothers, Gal City fought tooth and nail. Zwide Celtics, who have not yet tasted a victory or a draw this season, were handed a huge 5-1 loss by Zwide Pirates. Hungry Lions played to a 1-1 draw against Swartkops United in a tough battle.

Eesou’s road to World Student Games REPORTER INSPIRED by the long and lonely hours on the road, Nelson Mandela University distance runner Mariano Eesou is targeting a podium in the half marathon at the World Student Games which start on Saturday and run until August 30. The 25-year-old Bestmed Madibaz star is determined to finish the race in Taipei, Taiwan, strongly after collapsing at the finish in South Korea two years ago. “Last time I got very dehydrated during the race and I still can’t remember the last kilometre,” said the second-year sports management student. “I collapsed as I went over the line and when I opened my eyes I was in the hospital on a
drip. I had just about enough left in me to get to the finish.” Despite fading towards the end, Eesou finished in 18th place and the team third. He said the experience was something he still couldn’t adequately put into words. Having learned some valuable lessons from his first experience, he said he felt confident ahead of this year’s championships, as he’d had a solid block of training in the build-up. He will represent South Africa in both the half marathon and 10 000m and while he didn’t have high expectations for the latter, he said he hoped to shine in the longer race. “For the 10 000m I’m just hoping to finish in the top 10, but for the half marathon I believe, not hope, that I will finish on the podium.” Eesou explained that he was covering an av-

erage of 110km per week in preparation and that his training sessions were split into two per day, seven days per week. He explained morning sessions consisted of an easy run combined with some core work, with his second session bringing up his total distance to about 20km. He said this training regime would continue all the way through to the games. He divided his attention between rugby and athletics during his school career, but in 2008 he gave rugby the boot to focus on his running. The many hours spent on the road could become lonely, he admitted, but he used the time to “think about the little things”. “I always think of my background and where I’m heading in life. That’s what really pushes me.”
Nelson Mandela Bay starts countdown to IRONMAN 70.3 Worlds REPORTER NELSON Mandela Bay is poised to benefit immensely from what will be a double header year when the city hosts the regular IRONMAN African Championship in April 2018 and later in September 2018 the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship. Nelson Mandela Bay submitted its bid to host this iconic event against some of the most popular cities in the world in March last year. Competition included Niece in France, as well as Budapest in Hungary. The city was announced as the successful bidder in September last year, largely due to its impressive history in hosting major international sporting events, including the award-winning IRONMAN African Championship. The city has been hard at work behind the scenes putting together a multidisciplinary team consisting of city officials, municipal enti-
ties, provincial government representatives and IRONMAN South Africa. Noxolo Nqwazi, executive director at the Department of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC), the department tasked with overseeing this iconic event, said, “We have been busy finalising all the relevant host city obligations, developing a business plan and identifying the critical skills that will drive this project to successful delivery in 2018 working side by side with IRONMAN.” With less than a month left since global qualification to race in NMBay opened, more than 200 athletes from around the world have booked their place to race on September 1 and 2. Unlike the regular IRONMAN African Championship, prospective athletes have to book their entries by qualifying at one of more than 90 IRONMAN 70.3 races around the world.
