On the Mandela Month of July, President Zuma has called on all South Africans to volunteer 67 minutes of their time on Nelson Mandela Day (18 July) to help change their communities and South Africa for the better.

This year’s event will take place under the theme of “Take action; inspire change; make every day a Mandela Day”, with a focus on food security, shelter and literacy. Media24 publications in the Eastern Cape will be focussing on these aspects with two projects for Mandela Month. As part of their Green initiatives Media24 publications Die Burger, PE Express, PE Express Indaba, UD News and Kouga Express will plant 100 Elephant’s Food (Spekboom)

Components arrive for the first wind farm for province CONSTRUCTION at the first of 10 wind farms planned for the province, the Metrowind Van Staden’s wind farm near PE, has begun. The 27 megawatt (MW) Metrowind Van Staden’s wind farm will comprise nine Sinovel SL3000 3MW turbines and is expected to produce 80 000MWh per year. “This means that enough electricity for 5 000 to 6 000 households will be generated, contributing 10% to the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s renewable energy target,” said Rubicept director, Ian Curry. The Metrowind Van Staden’s wind farm is due to start generating power by February 2014. Transport of the components for the nine wind turbines began in the final week of June and will continue as nine nacelles, 27 blades and nine towers make their way on a 57-kilometre journey from the Port of Ngqura to the site. The construction is being led by Basil Read Matomo, who was awarded the R475-million contract as the lead engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor. He moved onto site on November 15 last year. The onset of construction and arrival of the wind turbine components signals the start of the first major wind project in the province. “The arrival of the first shipload of turbines is a significant milestone for the project. Transporting the turbines to the wind farm site is challenging, but I am confident that with our team of experts, and the support of the local authorities and community, we will excel at this task,” said Marius von Wielligh, Director of Energy at Basil Read

Matomo. “The blades need to be transported on a 64-metre long truck and trailer, given their length, and are rotated at optimal angle so that they can fit under the bridges along the route,” said Ken Dyamond, Director of Projects at Basil Read Matomo, adding that the towers were split into four sections for transport. There are also two transport routes, one for the nacelles and one for the blades and towers: “The nacelles weigh in at a mammoth 120 tons and given both the weight and the size of the hubs, the parts needed to be transported via a less congested route through Uitenhage/Motherwell from the Coega Industrial development Zone to the site.” The blades and tower sections are being transported on the N2 freeway, the more direct route. Upon arrival at their Van Staden’s destination, temporary road closures will be in effect daily at Blue Horizon Bay as components move towards site. Turbine erection will begin mid-July and Matomo have confirmed that the turbine installation will be complete by October. Six local communities would benefit from job creation during the construction phase. The Eastern Cape is set to become a leading wind and renewable energy hub in an effort to assist the Department of Energy meet its procurement objectives of 3 725 MW of renewable energy. A total of 67% of the national wind projects will be based in the Eastern Cape with an investment value of R18.1-billion

Helenvale se nuwe sentrum ‘verbeter die gemeenskap’

Bouwerk aan Helenvale se nuwe gemeenskapsentrum is byna voltooi, en die Mandelabaai-ontwikkelingsagentskap (MBOA) is vasbeslote om te keer dat dit nie “maar net nog ’n wit olifant word nie.” “Baie gebiede het sale en geboue gekry met die oog op die ontwikkeling van die gemeenskap, maar daar het niks van gekom nie. Ons sal self verseker dat dié gebou vir die gemeenskap sweet,” het Pierre Voges, bestuurshoof van MBOA, gesê. Die gebou, wat sowat R38 miljoen kos om op te rig, het tot dusver 180 werksgeleenthede vir inwoners van Helenvale geskep. “Die ooreenkoms was elke persoon wat aan die gebou werk, moet uit die gemeenskap kom wat dit bedien. Nou het 180 inwoners van Helenvale nuwe vaardighede aangeleer wat hulle kanse om weer werk te kry baie verbeter.” Die gebou behoort teen die einde van Julie voltooi te wees en dan sal die soektog na huurders begin. Die MBOA dring egter daarop aan dat die huurders ook daarop konsentreer om Helenvale en omliggende gebiede te verbeter. Die gebou het 13 kantore, twee sale wat elk 100 mense

Wendy-Ann Fillis (43) het in ’n huis oorkant die gemeenskapsentrum grootgeword, en is baie in haar skik met wat die MBOA beoog om te doen. “Toe ek gebore is, was hier net ’n oop stuk veld. Nou staan hier ’n pragtige gebou wat gebruik gaan word om ons gemeenskap te verbeter.” Sy voel die departement van gesondheid sal die ideale huurder wees omdat die versorging van bejaardes en kinders een van Helenvale se grootste kwessies is. “Ek hoop net die mense waardeer nou wat hier vir ons gedoen word. Ek hoop hulle kyk na die gebou en besef ons moet dit vir ons toekomstige generasies oppas, sodat hulle ook voordeel daaruit kan trek.”

Bay residents do their bit for Mandela Day Former president Nelson Mande la’s birthday on 18 July has be come known as Mandela Day a day on which all South Africans are urged to devote 67 minutes of their time (in honour of the 67 years Madiba spent fighting for human rights) to make a difference in someone’s life. PE Express’s TINNEKE GOED HALS asked the public how they would be spending their 67 minutes on Mandela Day.

Thoko Sompontsha from New Brighton said she is an educator at a primary school and the school – especially the intermediate phase – have prepared lots of activities such as drama, songs, short stories on Mandela, games and a big sports day. At her church they will be praying for him. They will also do short speeches on the wonderful things he has done for the people.

VW’s Mount Road landmark undergoes R13 million revamp AFTER 44 years of service, the landmark VW building, situated on Mount Road, is undergoing a revamp to the tune of R13 million. The revamp will boast a new VW Crafter Workshop, be home to the MotoRent division and every floor has been remodeled with new amenities for staff and customers. “We will be back in operation in August,” said Alan Taverner, chairman of Tavcor Motor Group. The revamp also prepares a way for a new franchise, Tavcor Commercial Vehicles - sales and service as well as VW Mastercars - since the VW Passenger franchise for sales and service, is now situated on William Moffett. Dealer Principal, John Els, said, “The full range of commercials will be available on display and the service division will cater for older car owners, as well as commercial vehicles.” The Mount Road premises will remain the headquarters of the Tavcor Group, as well as the trade parts, accounts and administrative divisions. Known for many years as the Embassy Building, the Mount Road building, now undergoing renovation, was built by LTA Construction in the late 1960’s. It was the home of VW Passenger sales and service for 43 years and also for a short while to the Porsche and Jaguar franchises, as well as the Audi franchise which relocated in the 1990’s. Established in 1948, Taverner Senior went on to buy Embassy Motors in 1961 and later on Alan Taverner took over as GM from 1980 and went on to become the MD in 1981, when his father passed away. “The building far exceeded its capacity for too many

years,” said chairman Alan Taverner. In 2000, it underwent a “face-lift” to become VWSA’s new Piazza concept showroom. At its peak, the building housed 140 people and was responsible for sales deliveries of close to 150 cars per month.

According to Masakeni Construction (Pty) Ltd, which is doing the construction, the work will be completed no later than the end of September.

Former local TV presenter Anele to pursue career in LA FORMER NMMU student and BayTV presenter for the show “We R Loud” Anele Ngcizela (21) has recently returned from the USA after participating in the Applause Rising Talent Showcase (ARTS) in Orlando Florida last week. She was awarded with second place in high fashion runway modelling and third place in TV commercial for her category respectively. In November of 2012 Anele was awarded with a scholarship and accepted for a course in film acting, which also has classes that deal with aspects of screenwriting, directing and producing, and will begin her studies at the New York Film Academy (NYFA) LA campus in January 2014. Anele was one of 7 contestants from PE who were scouted by Elsubie De Lange from Just-You artist and model management based in Johannesburg, for the International Showcase at Montecasino, where she was then scouted by international scout Kim Myers for ARTS. Although known as a former TV presenter, Anele is also a model, dancer, actress and entrepreneur who organizes events around the Bay area for charity and young musicians, DJs and designers who want to expose their talent to the locals. Anele does this together with her business partner, Evans Zemba (21), through their young events and clothing company “Friday Social Events” (FSE). She was interviewed by LA agents and managers Gar Lester and Discover Management, who have A-list clients such as Jillian Rose from MTV’s “Awkward”. Anele will be heading to LA to pursue her dreams and studies this December. “I appreciate the opportunity to study at one of the biggest film schools in the world. I cannot express my gratitude to the One above for always guiding me and Gillian Ha-

Hobby Expo at Summerstrand Village SUMMERSTRAND Village Shopping Centre is inviting the public to come join in the fun and games at the Hobby Expo from July 19 to 21. One of the main attractions is Craig Pannel’s toy exhibit. Craig has been collecting toys for over 20 years and his collection has now become big enough to house in a small private toy museum. It includes toys as varied as model cars, trucks, planes made by Dinky, Corgi, Matchbox, toy figures like He-Man and Star Wars, rocking horses, Meccano sets, superhero toy figures, Tonka Toys, Britain’s and other lead soldiers, pedal cars, Fisher Price toys, Tinplate Toys, Smurfs, TV and movies toys, YoYo’s, comics and large toy trains by Hornby. Craig will display a cross section of the above toys but his main focus will be the display on Meccano, Trains and Model cars and he will show a running train layout. It all started in 1993 when his mother unpacked some of the toys which he used to play with as a kid. Like so many sentimental mothers, she had carefully wrapped and boxed his toys for some future purpose. Craig cannot believe that the toys he loved so much as a child brought back so many good memories, and better yet, created a renewed interest. After seeing the toys again in 1993, he decided to start collecting toys as a hobby. This hobby has taken him all over South Africa and Europe in search of toys, and he has been most fortunate to meet some very interesting people through their mutual hobby. SINGER, songwriter, idols judge and radio host Unathi will be at The Boardwalk this Friday (July 19) to launch her newest album. “The village girl who found gold” from the Eastern Cape, Unathi Msengana, will be entertaining her Port Elizabeth fans in The Boardwalk International Convention Centre (ICC) with songs from her third album, “With Love”. Her show is expected to be the biggest in The Boardwalk ICC since the hosting of soldout Jonathan Butler concerts just before Christmas 2012. “The Boardwalk ICC is helping to attract

Clivia show and open meeting to be held MOST gardeners only know of the bright orange lily that flowers in Spring (Clivia miniata) A few have encountered the yellow Clivia that was first discovered near the Howick Falls. Few realise that the genus contains six recognised species: Miniata with large orange or yellow flowers, C. Nobilis, robusta, gardenii, caulescense and mirabilis (with small pendulous ericaceous blooms) because their flowers are less showy; the other species are less popular but because they flower at different times of the year can provide interesting displays. Human nature has led to hybridisation of different species of clivia, known as interspecifics. These can flower at different times, but generally seem to choose mid-winter. The flowers are normally larger than the pendulous type and more open at the tips.

For this reason, the Eastern Province Clivia Club holds an interspecific Mini show on July 20, at Sherwood Garden Centre, Port Elizabeth from 10am to 2pm. Entrance is free and open to the public. This year there will be two categories: best interspecific in flower and pendulous species in flower. The show will be followed by an open meeting to which the public is also invited and where John Handman, a well-known grower from KwaZulu-Natal, will be visiting and talking about growing Clivia and the 2014 International Clivia Conference, when Clivia growers from all over the world will meet. AUDITIONS for the 24th edition of the annual Showtime Awards young talent development revue, ‘S Wonderful, ‘S Marvellous, will be held at the Savoy Theatre in Adcockvale, the home of the PE Gilbert & Sullivan Society on Saturday, July 27, from 1.30pm. The show will run in the Savoy Theatre from Friday, January 24, to Saturday, February 1, 2014. The main awards will be presented on the Friday evening. Again devised and with dialogue direction by executive producer Bob Eveleigh and with musical and vocal direction by Wayne Hughes and choreography by Tanya Tait, the production team will be seeking a core cast of six females and four males, all between the usual ages of 15 (as at date of show opening on January 24) and 22 years (as at date of auditions). The show will utilise musical material from the extensive George and Ira Gershwin songbook, mixed with comedy and dance, in the revue. Anyone unfamiliar with the songs, should check these names and their wide-ranging music and lyrics on Youtube, in particular seeking the two songs, ‘S Wonderful and I Got Rhythm, which will be used for the movement auditions. Actors, who will also be required to sing in ensemble in the show, as well as solo singers, who also have to be able to move to some extent. Anyone able to tap - male or female - should bring their tap shoes with them to the tryouts. Singers, who may bring their own backing tracks or perform with their own accompanists (or sing a cappella) at the auditions, should prepare two songs - one ballad and the other uptempo, and it would help if one of these is a Gershwin composition, although this is not essential. Auditionees may not be required to sing the two songs, however, or, alternatively, may be requested to sing only part of one or both. Anyone who would like to be trained in technical aspects of the theatre is also welcome to attend the auditions. Tenant burned by move after fire A READER whose rented four-bedroomed home burned down some time ago has approached the Property Poser panel for assistance regarding his rights after the fire. The tenant writes that he and his family were subsequently moved to a two-bedroomed house on the undertaking that the landlord would have them back in a similar sized dwelling within three months. It seems that the landlord’s intention was to build onto the house that the reader currently occupies. The problem is that 14 months have elapsed since the move with no additions or improvements to the size of the house. During this time, the reader has paid the same rental as he did for the larger dwelling. On top of this, all his family’s movable possessions were destroyed in the fire, which was apparently caused by a short circuit in the wiring. He would like to know what his rights are in

terms of a reduction in his rental and claiming for his lost possessions. The difficulty in assessing the situation from a legal standpoint lies in the fact that the details of the agreement between tenant and landlord have not been disclosed, said Sean Radue of Radue Attorneys in Port Elizabeth. “The only condition that seems to have been agreed upon, that we are aware of, was increasing the size of the dwelling within the agreed time.” Radue says this obviously has not taken place and the rental has remained the same. “It’s not clear whether the new dwelling justified a higher rental but what does seem apparent is that there could be grounds for an abatement of some amount considering the fact that the house is smaller than it should be.” Radue says the lease agreement between a

A full field of 814 chess players from 28 countries round the world took part in what was “officially the biggest ever Commonwealth Open Chess Championship,” according to convener of the event, Dr Brian van Zyl. Retired world champion Garry Kasparov also attended the event to watch the finals and to further the Kasparov Chess Foundation in South Africa. Pres Zuma said in his speech the Eastern Cape has a proud history of struggle and sport. “History has also shown that the Grahamstown and Port Elizabeth chess clubs were amongst the first to be established in South Africa,” said President Zuma.

“On Robben Island chess provided a solace to us that we needed in those conditions of isolation and deprivation.It propelled our minds beyond the confines of the prison walls and allowed us to reflect and to position our thoughts strategically to fight the regime,” said Zuma. He said that it is for this reason that he has taken a deep personal interest in chess and has been actively involved in encouraging this sport in disadvantaged rural communities in the country. “We also share a common sentiment with the Department of Basic Education to encourage chess as a serious sport in the schools. “It prompts latent skills on the children, patience, quick wit, decisiveness and confidence arising from competition with counterparts, including those from outside the country. “Chess exercises the children’s minds; it is a healthy diversion from the often toxic television programmes which feature crime, violence and nudity, and reinforces cultures alien to the needs of the children,” he said. He also commended Nelson Mandela Bay and Collegiate High School pupil Charlize van Zyl’s chess achievements who is a women’s international master. “The story of Charlize must serve as an inspiration to all the juniors here. You can succeed if you have the commitment, dedication and passion,” President Zuma said.

Emslie wins JBay open BORDER surfer, Greg Emslie, emerged victorious at the inaugural Jeffreys Bay Open Of Surfing presented by Billabong recently, with some powerful and fast surfing despite the small and testing offshore conditions at Supertubes. The surf pulsed throughout the morning, with slower heats followed by intense action, and the luck factor played a large part in the final day action. Greg had snapped his favourite board in the semi-final, and was surfing in the final on a back-up board that seemed to really light up in the fast and shallow surf, getting some good waves with open faces and racking up the points. “It was tough out there; the waves were pretty scarce and they were quite tricky to ride on the low tide,” said Greg after the final. “The guys in the final heat were really fighting hard, and it was so competitive out there.” Greg has been surfing events at Supertubes all his life, as an amateur and as a pro on the World Championship Tour, and knows the wave very well. “I paddled out for the final, and

Pitlane Ban The pitlane incident in which an errant tyre from Mark Webber’s Red Bull struck an FOM cameraman, has prompted the FIA into immediate action. In a bid to clamp down on safety, all Formula 1 broadcast personnel and camera crews have subsequently been banned from the pitlane. The ban will apply to all sessions of a race weekend. This action by the sport’s governing body is a bit of a knee-jerk reaction to the German GP incident. It undoubtedly infringes on journalistic freedom as it severely limits indepth, up-to-the-second media coverage from the proverbial trenches. The FIA’s unilateral decision is not completely rational for the simple question - if it were a mechanic struck by the wheel would the FIA ban pit crews from the pitlane?

Young Driver’s Test Formula 1’s governing body, the FIA, has offered Pirelli a bail-out by allowing for an emergency tyre test to be run at this month’s young driver test. The FIA has, however, announced that it will send its own observers to this month’s young driver’s test. The recent Mercedes-tyregate debacle has prompted the FIA to appoint a “security guard” to ensure that no current race drivers do any work on car development. On the back of multiple tyre failures at the British Grand Prix the governing body changed testing regulations to allow for the regular race drivers to help out with the tyre work at the test. The Silverstone Grand Prix circuit will be used from today (July 17) until Friday for the test. The FIA has, however, stipulated that a current race driver will be allowed only one day to work on an emergency testing programme for tyre manufacturer Pirelli. The observers will scrutinise the running programmes of every team to ensure that all development work is done by the “young” driv-

Tough days ahead for the Kings JULY 26 – ten days from now – is a date that should be boldly written and hung from the framework of the bed of every Southern Kings “probable” from now until that date. That’s the day of the first leg of the Kings’ determined bid to extend their presence in Super Rugby for another season. Sure, the Kings’ “Second XV” were thoroughly trounced 58-13 in Durban last Saturday by the Sharks but that certainly wasn’t a true reflection of their capabilities. An under-strength side was deliberately selected to give several of the franchise’s better players every chance of being at their best in the home and away promotion-relegation series against the Lions to decide which team plays Super Rugby next season. These will be testing matches, that’s certain. The Sharks, playing for pride only last weekend, showed their teeth as they went in for the kill. But who would’ve thought in just two minutes these second-string Kings would score the first try? And another before halftime. Yes, in the end the try-tally would be 10-2 to the Sharks at a Durban “Park” that very

definitely didn’t belong to the Kings, despite its name. But the EP team certainly showed that the Jo’burg lads will need to be at their best if they hope to reclaim their Super Rugby status. But as action-packed as this game was, it had to accept secondplace behind the Stormers-Bulls clash in Capetown to the thunderous joy of the Newlands faithful as their team emerged thoroughly dominant at 30-13. As with the Sharks this was a win carved out for pride only – although it shifted the Bulls down to second place on the overall log. It was achieved, too, with a typically triumphant Bryan Habana try, neatly worked through a perfect directionalswitch pass by Jean de Villiers. The Stormers skipper also had the misfortune to be yellow-carded for a late, no-arms tackle – which many agreed could hardly have been avoided. There are some players who would never stoop to deliberately flouting the law. De Villiers is one of them. It was also Habana’s farewell match to Super Rugby, but the green and gold jersey means so much to him that his new career with French club Toulon will not affect his

availability for the Boks. Hopefully, with an eye on this year’s Four Nations Championship (don’t forget Argentina are in the mix now) the likes of standout lock, Andries Bekker, will also be available. Canny former Bok coach, Nick Mallett, is of the opinion that somehow South African rugby must generate more funds to keep top players at home longer. But surely this is largely in the hands of the player – and those who want to represent the Boks as long as possible can choose the Habana route, where possible. ‘All systems go’ for VW Rally 2013 ENTRIES are finalised and just a few details still need sorting out, so it is “all systems go” for Volkswagen Rally 2013. Friday and Saturday, 19 and 20 July, will see the national rally teams descend on the Eastern Cape for this popular event on the national calendar. “It has been a bit trickier to get everything done this year,” said route organiser Joe Fourie. “We’ve been ambitious in our planning and have two stages in Jeffreys Bay, a Longmore Forest stage and a redesigned Kings Beach stage for rally fans to look forward to.” The event is organised every year by the Algoa Rally Association with sponsorship from Volkswagen. This relationship has ensured the successful running of the event with 2013 marking 31 years of the Volkswagen Rally. The rally begins at the Auto Pavilion in Uitenhage on Friday when the cars leave from the ceremonial start at midday. Before this the vehicles will be held in parc ferme at the Auto Pavilion parking lot and fans can mingle with the team, see the cars up close and take photos with their favourite rally competitors. “Keeping the rally close to the people of the Eastern Cape is a primary goal every year,” said Fourie. “Stage planning and routes all factor in that one important aspect, so we can have as many motorsport enthusiasts supporting the rally as possible.” For 2013 the first stage takes place just around the corner at Volkswagen’s own

vehicle test track, close to the new People Pavilion complex. That stage starts at 12:15 with the rally field heading out to the Longmore Forest for stages two to five. Stage six is at Fountain’s Mall in Jeffreys Bay at 16:54 with the final stage for Friday in the centre of the town at 19:00. “Anyone not able to get out to the Longmore Forest on Friday will have three

chances to see the rally cars. The first in Uitenhage and again at the final two stages of the day in Jeffreys Bay,” said Fourie. “On Saturday the Kings Beach finale will be very exciting. While a short tar stage, we’ve designed it to be a dramatic finish to the Volkswagen Rally and it will be quite a challenge for the competitors.” Fourie has indicated that the Longmore Forest spectating on Saturday has been
