Lorraine stormwater problems addressed LASHEIGH LUCAS
T
HE stormwater pipe line in Lorraine, known for being a high flooding area, is receiving a R400 000 upgrade.
According to DA Ward 8 Councillor, Gustav Rautenbach, the problem with stormwater
drainage is not unique to the Lorraine area, and the reason for the problems with the city’s drainage system is that it wasn’t designed to keep up with the population explosion. “Flooding happens because the old system is not linked up with the new system due to all the new developments such as townhouses,” he said. He went on saying that the R400 000 upgrade
would only assist to a certain extent in one area. “The maximum lifespan of these pipes is about 30 years. The more houses that are being built, the more pressure is put on these old pipes, and without maintenance and/or replacing these pipes, we will always have the problem of overflowing drains.” In the middle of 2010 Rautenbach’s warnings were heeded and a brand-new stormwater pipe-
line was approved and installed along Macon Road in Lorraine. “That, however, was just the first phase, which cost R3.5 million, and the second phase is estimated to cost around R11 million. The first phase is not working properly because it was never finished,” said Rautenbach.

MOTORING enthusiasts are readying themselves for one of the most exciting motoring events to be held in Port Elizabeth. From September 20 to 25, enthusiasts can indulge in a host of events – all under the umbrella of one massive motoring festival, The OverDrive Festival. In association with Motor Sport South Africa and Coega Harbour, a 4km long triple lane highway on Neptune Road will be cleared and safely administered where the public can put their pedal to the metal. Motorsport fans will be able to enjoy high speed dare-devil racing with a race day, as well as dragging and spinning at Aldo Scribante Race Circuit, and stock car racing at the Oval Track in Walmer.

Organisers said there would also be a special Baviaanskloof experience which will go on a unique route through pristine countryside for two days; or the audience can have a fun-filled family fun course around PE indulging in a 4x4 experience. According to organisers, the Siyaya Taxi Gymkhana will find out who is the best and safest driver in NMB. An advanced driving course will take participants into the world of the super drivers at the Scribante Circuit. Spectators are also invited to visit Eben de Vos’s motor museum in Newton Park as well as the Volkswagen Pavilion in Uitenhage. Numerous charities will be benefiting from the Overdrive Festival. Dié denominasie het die lig gesien in 1910 met George Bowie van Skotland as die stigter. Dit het toe bekendgestaan as “The Pentecostal Mission” maar in 1929 is die naam verander na die Volle Evangelie Kerk. Pastoor Lourens Golden wat tans die PE Sentraal gemeente bedien, sê die rol wat die eerste diensknegte, pastore Petrus Viljoen en Schoombie saam met hulle gades vervul het ten opsigte van die stigting van VEK Port Elizabeth Sentraal, sal altyd onthou word. Hulle het dikwels onder moeilike omstandighede opelugdienste gehou of bedien in gehuurde sale met minimum toerusting. Suster Davies Keable (90), wat steeds ’n aktiewe lid van die gemeente is, vertel dat in 1914

Hulle was werksaam op sy melkplaas, toe bekend as “Bog Farm” wat later hernoem is na “Fig Tree” in 17de Laan, Walmer. Jeugkampe is op dié plaas gehou waar die

Entries open for Algoa FM Boardwalk Big Walk for Cancer ENTRIES have opened on Monday for the Algoa FM Boardwalk Big Walk for Cancer which will take place at The Boardwalk on October 25. The Boardwalk is the new partner to the Big Walk for Cancer, which is one of the biggest charity events on the Eastern Cape calendar. The Igazi Foundation is the beneficiary of this year’s walk, with the funds going towards moving the Dora Nginza paediatric oncology ward to the Provincial Hospital, which is home to the Igazi Foundation’s haematology ward. The current 6-bed ward at Dora Nginza will not be able to accommodate the expected increase in childhood cancer patients in the next 3 to 5 years. The target for this year’s event is 12 000 participants, according to Jennilee Peremore,
Public Relations and Corporate Social Investment Manager at Algoa FM. This year’s route will take participants through the foyer of The Boardwalk Hotel in a bid to set a world record for the number of people walking through the foyer of a hotel at one time. Both the start and the finish of the 5km walk are at The Boardwalk. Entrants can hand in their forms and R50 entry fee at The Boardwalk Spur restaurant and Brian Bands in Cape Road. An online entry system will also be available on the Algoa FM website. The closing date for entries to the Big Walk is October 22. T-shirts will be given to the first 6 000 entrants over the age of 18. Registration will take place on October 23 and 24 from 1pm to 7pm, and October 25 from

Hope Jones auction proceeds to help disabled children REPORTER THE Hope Jones Foundation, a PE-based NGO aimed at enabling and empowering children with physical and mental disabilities, recently held their annual Van Gogh Art and Photography exhibition at Walmer Park Shopping Centre. “The Van Gogh Art and Photography Competition was initiated to promote art in the classical form, as well as exploring art through photography,” explained founder of the Foundation, Gary Jones. “We, as a Foundation, would like to bring light and colour to disabled children’s lives where there is so much darkness and turmoil.” This competition is run in junior and high schools involved in the Foundation’s ABC4DBC programme, where Able-Bodied Children (ABC) champion the cause of Disabled-Bodied Children (DBC). Schools involved in 2014 are Collegiate Junior School for Girls, Collegiate Girls’ High School, Summerwood Primary, St George’s Preparatory School, St
Shawnee Corson (18) of Collegiate Girls’ High School, with her three art entries.

George’s College, Pearson High School, Cape Recife High School, and Framesby High School. The entries for the “Music and/or Movement” theme were exhibited at Walmer Park for four days during July before culminating in an art auction. Local artists such as Duncan Stewart, Gustav Griesel and Hermien Webb also sponsored paintings and photographs to be sold on behalf of the Foundation. Winners of the art category were Shawnee Corson (18) of Collegiate Girls’ High School (first prize), Kate Delport (12) of Collegiate Junior School (second prize), and Hannah Loggie (13) of St George’s Preparatory School (third). In the photography category, Jade Visser (15) of St George’s College won first prize for her photograph entitled “Paradise is a state of mind”, Amy Carver (17) of Collegiate Girls’ High School came second and Sarah Jones (15), also of Collegiate Girls’ High, was awarded third place. Proceeds from the auction and sale of artworks are utilised towards empowering children with physical and mental disabilities.

MBDA Donkin Urban Festival THE balcony of Port Elizabeth, the Donkin Reserve, will come alive this weekend with the fourth annual Nelson Mandela Bay Urban Run taking place. Located off Belmont Terrace, Central, and overlooking the city, the Donkin Reserve was proclaimed an open space in perpetuity by Sir Rufane Donkin and includes a Stone Pyramid Monument with a touching inscription erected by Sir Rufane Donkin in memory of his late wife, Elizabeth, after whom the city was named.
The Urban Run, hosted by the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA), attracts just under 2 000 participants, all of whom report for registration on Saturday to collect their goody bags and race numbers for the event which features a Kids 2.5km Urban Run at 3pm on Saturday and an adult 10km Urban Run on Sunday starting at 9am. Festivities on the Donkin kick off at 9am on Saturday morning and will include an open public aerobics class with Metrogym at 10am followed by a display by the Port Elizabeth Pitbull club at 11:30am and the Ibhayi

SAB League commitments affecting PEFA Teams THREE PEFA premier league teams are campaigning in the regional Castle league which means that they play two competitive games over a weekend. This is taking its toll on the players with Acemates, Callies and Motherwell Academy suffering losses. Last Friday night at the NMMU South Campus Vodacom NMMU Madibaz got the better of Central Acemates 1-0. Half time it was nilnil, but after the break Madibaz started getting their rhythm with a fine goal from Cloudias Sagandira breaking the deadlock. NMB Municipality thumped Motherwell Academy 4-1 at The Oval. For Municipality Shawn Sokiya scored a brace with Monwabisi Bless and Mfundo Gqirana finding the back of the net to finish off Motherwell.
Last Saturday PE Defence and Hearts played out a 1-1 draw on the EC Defence fields. Desmond Simulambo put Hearts one goal up a few minutes after halftime. Defence’s pressure eventually told when they were awarded a penalty in the last minute of the game, with Nathi converting from the penalty mark to secure Defence a share of the points. On the Kemsley Park fields, with a feast of goals, Warriors trounced PE Home Rovers by 4 goals to 3. Nevan Gardner had the distinction of scoring all 4 Warriors’ goals in the first half. Many reasons for Boks to smile HATS OFF to young Master Pollard. Several critics, despite his recent success at junior international level, thought the 20-year-old was being rushed into the top flight a little too hastily. Not so, was Handre Pollard’s emphatic response in the Boks’ first Rugby Championship encounter of 2014 with the All Blacks at the Westpac Stadium in Wellington last weekend. In a heartening performance the youngster signalled his intention to make a permanent claim to the national flyhalf berth. His chief rival remains old hand Morné Steyn but the only area in which the veteran may be a more reliable bet is goalkicking. For the rest Pollard takes the cake, hands down. He showed in this narrow 14-10 defeat by the Kiwis he has all the skills a top class No. 10 needs. His decision making in the North Island capital could not be questioned; particularly his ability to get the backline moving, while when needing to keep All Black advances in check, his kicking accuracy was equally effective. It should be remembered, too, that with rain falling for much of the match, conditions were far from ideal. Yes, overall the Kiwi victory was deserved – if only just. However, in the final minutes as the Boks hammered away at their opponents’ goal-line it might, with just a smidgeon of luck, have gone the other way. The Kiwis almost have the Rugby Championship wrapped up, with the All Blacks and Wallabies having just their final away match against the Springboks outstanding to complete the home and away tournament. It’s true both these games can be won by the Boks but even more exciting is the bigger picture: the current gelling of a nice blend of
experience and youth in our player ranks of late – and the exciting possibilities that attend such a timely amalgam. That, of course, is the 2015 England-hosted World Cup. Now almost exactly a year away, the timely arrival of Pollard at top level together with a host of other positive factors on display at the Westpac ground brings hope of a real chance of adding a third World Cup triumph to the Boks’ 1995 and 2007 sweeping of the boards. Bolstering this belief at Wellington were the likes of other youngsters such as centre Jan Serfontein, the solid loose-trio of Duane Vermeulen, Marcello Coetzee and Francois Louw; Ruan Pienaar, unhappily injured, with his best Test outing to date. Catching the eye, too, was Cornal Hendricks with the speed of a true wing, though he could tighten his defence with a leaf out of Bryan Habana’s book. Adriaan Strauss and Bismarck du Plessis showed they are as good as anything in the hooking business, worldwide. Add Matfield and Etzebeth to the mix, what could be better? And don’t forget the lads like master scrumhalf, Fourie du Preez, and others away in Japan. Interesting: Highly respected columnist, Max du Preez, has entered the fray of sports transformation – not unexpectedly on the side of 50% representation of black and white players in the Springbok rugby team. Mostly he pushes all the right buttons: why no academies for the less privileged youngsters at less popular schools; if players are equally talented choose the black player. These and others are valid points except – come on, Max – why no mention of the exact opposite circumstances in soccer, hardly a single white face in the Bafana Bafana team make-up? Point taken?

THE World of Wheels NMB Motor Fair will run from September 20 until September 24 at the NMB Stadium. The event will attract over 300 vehicles on display, including bikes and cars – old, exotic and new. The type of displays that visitors can expect includes new cars from Toyota, Audi, Ford, Mazda, GWM, Hyundai, Nissan, Porsche, Suzuki, VW, Chevrolet, Opel, Peugeot, Citroen, Mercedes-Benz, Honda, Chrysler, Smart, Jeep, Alfa, Fiat, Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo. Auto Motorcycles will also be bringing their range of bikes such as Honda and Triumph. The main motoring clubs in the area will be represented, with additional displays being on the Sunday and Wednesday. The clubs will have members at hand and most can answer questions regarding the vehicles. Each vehicle has a display card informing people about relevant
points about the vehicle. Smaller stalls, such as toy and model cars, modelling shops, and accessories will also be on display. There will also be the Radio Controlled Racers. A new interest that has hit Port Elizabeth is Rocker Cover Racing. This is becoming a huge interest at some of the motoring clubs and challenges are put out on a regular basis. This will take place on September 21 and 24. Another event that will create interest is the Taxi Challenge where the top 5 taxi drivers for each of the Taxi Associations will go up against each other for the Taxi Challenge Driver of the Fair.
