Die syfers van die nasionale tesourie toon dat die bedrag wat aan die Oos-Kaap se ander metro, Buffalo City, verskuldig is met R150 miljoen jaar-op-jaar toegeneem

The little boy, who was born on February 19 this year, achieved a landslide victory in the SMS vote competition by receiving 866 votes. Declan is the only child of Bevan and Melanie Blignaut, who are very proud of their little front page baby. According to dad Bevan, Declan is a pleasant baby who loves vegetables and playing with balls. For his first Christmas little Declan will be re-
ceiving a tricycle and various other gifts. “He loves sliding on his tummy and his favourite hobby at the moment is to pull the decorations off the Christmas tree,” said Bevan. Motormuseum gesluit DIE staat het dié perseel nodig, so weg met die St. Croix-motormuseum waar sowat 55 veteraanmotors reeds die afgelope 28 jaar staan. Nie eens die skriftelike pleidooie van “Oom” Ben Fihla, uitvoerende burgemeester van die Mandelabaai-metropool en Stone Sizane, die ANC se parlementêre hoofsweep, kon dié museum red nie. (Dokumente van dié korrespondensie is in Die Burger se besit.) ’n Uitgerekte hofstryd tussen Eben de Vos, eienaar van die museum, en die departement openbare werke (aan wie die perseel behoort) kon ook niks doen om dié gewilde plek se deure oop te hou nie. Die “stryd” het in 2013 begin toe die departement openbare werke nie sy huurooreenkoms met De Vos wou verleng nie, aangesien die polisie die gebou en perseel wil benut. “Dit is hartseer dat die motormuseum moet skuif, maar ons moet volgens prosedures werk. Die wetgewing hieroor is baie streng,” het Johan van der Walt, streekbestuurder van die nasionale departement van openbare werke verlede jaar April dié besluit verduidelik. “Die polisie het ’n gesertifiseerde behoeftestelling vir die spesifieke gebou en die perseel ingedien en wetgewing bepaal dat die gebruik van ’n staatsgebou in só ’n geval wel van die private huurder na die betrokke staatsdepartement moet gaan.” De Vos het hierop gereageer dat sy meer as veertig jaar toewyding om só ’n museum in die geboorteplek van Suid-Afrika se motorbedryf te
vestig, met die teken van ’n dokument van die tafel gevee is. “Dit was die stigting-stad van die bedryf. Een van die eerste motors wat hier vervaardig is – ’n 1926-Chevrolet – staan in die museum,” het De Vos gesê. Hy moes die laaste paar dae toekyk hoe die een veteraanmotor ná die ander die perseel vir ’n laaste keer verlaat – op die laaibak van ’n groot vragmotor. “Ek is platgeslaan. Ek moes ’n week of wat gelede ’n paar dae in die hospitaal deurbring nadat my hart van al die stres aangetas is.” Hy onthou hoe vele studente aan die NMMU – hoofsaaklik van die fakulteit fotografie, en selfs ingenieurstudente – hul vak-tesisse en praktiese take by die museum voltooi het. “Mense bel steeds vir afsprake om die museum te besoek en kan nie glo dat die deure nou vir altyd gesluit is nie.” Benewens al die veteraanmotors, was daar ook spesialis-toerusting en oor die 20 000 boeke en tydskrifte. “Die departement het in ’n stadium aangevoer ek bedryf die perseel as ’n besigheid. Hul verweer was dat ek ondersteuners wat hul voertuie hier parkeer, R125 per maand laat betaal, en dat ek ’n onwettige konstruksie op die perseel opgerig het, en dat dit ’n verbreking was van die huurkontrak.” De Vos se huurkontrak het R100 per maand beloop. – LOURENS SCHOEMAN

The Media Workshop’s owner, Denise Roodt, was instrumental in bringing AFDA to the Eastern Cape. “I realized there was a need for a locallybased institution that could offer degree and post-graduate programmes in film and television production and produce graduates who are equipped to produce quality content for the growing international market. “I approached AFDA’s CEO, Bata Passchier, in 2012 and we have been working ever since to get the necessary accreditation in place to open the campus next year. Needless to say, we are very excited to be opening in February.” Applications are now open for a Bachelor of Arts Motion Picture Medium degree, including the following disciplines: Producing; Directing; Writing; Editing; Sound Design; Production Design; Costume, Make-up and Styling; Cinematography and Data Management. AFDA is the only South African film school ever to have won an Academy award for the best foreign student film and to have been a finalist for the prestigious Court de Metrage at Cannes. The school has, since the inception of the SAFTAs (South African Film and Television Awards), received 21 out of a possible 24 nominations for best student film and won the award 7 out of the 8 possible times that the award has been presented. AFDA is a full member of CILECT, the international association of film and TV schools. “I am often asked how AFDA can claim to be the number one Film, Television and Performance School. My answer has always been the same. We rate ourselves based on our contribution to the South African film industry through the quality of our graduates, the work that they create and the work that they produce,” said Holmes.

Baywest remains committed to getting Apple Express on track METRO MINUTES BAYWEST Managing Director Gavin Blows said the developers of the Port Elizabeth Regional Mall are “working hard” with the Apple Express NGO and Apple Express Rail (AER) “to get the iconic tourism train up and running next year.” Blows told Metro Minutes that a station had already been included in the plans for Baywest Mall. Linked to this was “the possibility of a tram ferrying commuters a short distance from the station to the mall and back. “This is a project we hope to see come to fruition, not only because it will add an entirely unique experience for visitors to the mall, but also because it will be a huge boost
to tourism in this region.” “We are in full support of Apple Express Rail, which is presenting a business case on taking over operation of the line from Transnet Freight Rail (TFR). “A similar cession of a railway line has occurred in the Western Cape by TFR to a nonstate entity, so we are hopeful that they will look favourably on this application as well.” Blows said although Baywest would not operate the line directly he was “hopeful should the line be ceded to AER, that speciality Baywest trains could be introduced.” These, he said, would make trips between the Humerail depot at the beachfront every four hours. He explained that new boarding platforms would be introduced along the line, should the “speciality trains” become a reality.

Crowds cheer as local winner drives away in a Merc A LUCKY resident of Salt Lake in the Port Elizabeth Northern Areas is driving around in a Mercedes-Benz. Donavan Hendriks was the first winner of the Bingo Royale Cleary Park “Win a Merc” competition. Hundreds of people joined in the excitement at BOSS Gaming Bingo outlets across the province over the weekend as three lucky winners celebrated Christmas early by driving away in a Mercedes Benz. Eastern Cape empowerment company BOSS Gaming operates Bingo Royale Cleary Park, Bingo Royale East London CBD and Ritz Gaming and Entertainment in Mthatha. The action from inside the Bingo Royale venue was relayed live to the crowd outside, as well as tothe neighbouring Vinny’s Italian Joint restaurant. Many made a day of it by booking their table and arriving early to enjoy traditional Italian dish-

away from the inside bowl wall. - Boil water and scald raisins and dry them with a kitchen cloth or paper. - Add raisins, currants, candied orange and lemon peel and almonds to the dough – knead them into the dough and form a ball out of it. Cover it again and let it rest for 30-40 minutes, dough needs to rise. - Again knead the dough very good, and let it rise for another 30-40 minutes, then form it into a Stollen. Form round flat (about 3cm high) piece, fold over to have half circle shape, and then press with the rolling pin into the upper third part of the dough, creating a fold. - Preheat oven to 190-200 degrees C - Grease a baking tray with butter and put the Stollen onto it, let it bake for 70-90 minutes until the surface is golden brown; if you see that it gets brown too early cover it with aluminium foil or greased parchment paper. - When the Stollen is done, brush butter onto the surface. Sprinkle first with coarse sugar then with a mix of vanilla, sugar and powdered sugar.

Pastryworks reach new heights with academy CHEF Ralph Gottschalk’s business The Pastryworks has become a household name in Port Elizabeth, not only for its exquisite sweet treats but also for its fun cooking classes for young and old, couples and corporates. Chef Ralph is, however, also making waves on the culinary scene both nationally and internationally having recently opened the new SA Academy of Culinary Arts (SAACA) in PE. Ralph and his wife, Cherilyn, and boys, Christopher (15) and Alex (11), settled in PE in 2005 and opened The Pastryworks. After being responsible for catering at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium during the 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup, Ralph was also contracted to provide catering in the Sao Paulo stadium in Brazil during the Soccer World Cup this year combining two of his biggest passions - cooking and soccer. We asked Ralph a few questions about his life as a well-travelled and respected chef. Why did you decide to settle in PE – and has PE been good to you? It was quite difficult travelling the world with our children while Cherilyn’s family lived here in Port Elizabeth. Apart from the fact that it is nice to be close to family. It’s also very handy. Cherilyn’s Dad and Mom look after our children nearly every day. They have been a great help; we couldn’t have done without them. PE has been fantastic to us, you cannot believe the people we have had the privilege of meeting and how they have helped us in so many ways - a BIG thank you to all….. Why did you decide to become a chef? I was too tall to become a pilot, too tall for the Navy, and I loved to bake and to cook. My grandfather told me when I was 14, a profession as a chef is a good choice; it doesn’t matter what happens in the world, people need to eat! What do you enjoy most about being a chef? Looking at other people’s faces when they see or eat something we have made. A smile is the biggest compliment!
Why are your classes for couples/corporates so popular? Television shows like Masterchef and the cake boss, as well as other cooking shows, have become very popular. “Come dine with me” is another show that people still enjoy and this has led to a different way of thinking about being in the kitchen. People find enjoyment and relaxation through cooking and it has become a very sociable thing to do. Today it is cool to be in the kitchen, to exchange ideas, change recipes and to cook something from a different country. Corporate functions are popular because it is something completely different. Here they make the meal themselves, and they are very competitive. They can also have a good laugh and relax and simply enjoy the evening, as well as learning something new. Have you met any “celebrity chefs”? Yes, many, including 1 to 3 star Michelin chefs, Gordon Ramsay, Joel Robuchon, Ming Tsai, Emeril Lagasse, Michel Roux, Raymond Blanc, Alain Ducasse, Sugar World Champion Ewald Notter. Who prepares meals in your home? Me or my wife or we do have take outs; yes I know, unbelievable, we have take outs . . . What will be your favourite comfort food A nice Delhi style butter chicken curry with some garlic Naan bread and Dal. Tell us about your world travels on which you find placements for your chefs For the past 4 years I have been the consultant for Chocolate Frey, Switzerland’s Number 1 Chocolate. I am responsible for Africa, Middle East and Asia. I travel about 3 times a year to 10 to 14 countries. In most of those countries I have friends and old colleagues. I try to keep in touch with them, as well as trying to build new relationships, so that I can offer our students of SAACA some great opportunities. One of my

The highlight of your career thus far There have been many, to name a few…Opening ‘The Palace Hotel’ in Sun City, opening the then Number 1 hotel in the USA, Chicago, The Peninsula, meeting Bill Clinton, cooking for Nelson Mandela for his Inauguration in Pretoria, standing 20m away from Philip Lahm (captain of the German National Team) when our German president Angela Merkel gave him the World Cup Trophy at the Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro – that was unbelievable, I was the chef of the stadium in Sao Paulo, and they invited me to do also the final in Rio, I will never forget that… . The next intake for SAACA, South African Academy of Culinary Arts will start with enrolment on March 1, 2015. The detrimental impact of cannabis / marijuana on children and adolescents ACCORDING to research Marijuana is one of the world’s most commonly used illegal drugs. There are approximately 300 million users worldwide. Marijuana comes from a plant called “Cannabis sativa”. Marijuana impacts on the developing brain of children differently from the way it impacts on the adult brain. Many researchers are making the case that children and marijuana do not belong together. They likely have no idea how smoking pot can impact on memory processing, as well as the ability to control emotions. A tween or teen’s brain absorbs marijuana differently from a fully developed brain. Children need to know that there are short-term and long-term effects that come with smoking pot. The short-term impact can mean not making the play in the big game or impacting GPA because it’s harder to remember something for a test. Smoking marijuana has all the known sideeffects of smoking tobacco except nicotine addiction. So a heavy and early smoker of marijuana is increasing the probability of chronic lung disease and cancer as he or she builds up pack-years. But the active ingredients in marijuana are dozens of different cannabinoids of which the best known is Tetra-hydro-cannabinol. The effect of these active drugs is at the endocanninoid site (also called the anandamide receptor) in the brain.
Effects of marijuana on the nervous system: Tetrahydrocannabinol acts on cannabinoid receptors which are found on neurons in many places in the brain. These brain areas are involved in memory (the hippocampus), concentration (cerebral cortex), perception (sensory portions of the cerebral cortex) and movement (the cerebellum, substantia nigra, globus pallidus). When Tetrahydrocannabinol activates cannabinoid receptors, it interferes with the normal functioning of these brain areas. In low to medium doses, marijuana caus es: •relaxation •reduced coordination •reduced blood pressure •sleepiness •disruption in attention •an altered sense of time and space...a good reason not to drive or operate machinery while under the influence. In high doses, marijuana can cause: •hallucinations •delusions •impaired memory •disorientation The effects of marijuana start as soon as one to ten minutes after it is taken and can last three to four hours or even longer. Whether marijuana can produce addiction is
controversial. Also controversial is whether marijuana causes long-term mental abnormalities. However, because there is a high level of tar and other chemicals in marijuana, smoking it is similar to smoking cigarettes. The lungs get a big dose of chemicals that increase the chances of lung problems and cancer later in life. Other effects of early marijuana use are: •Early marijuana users have less white matter in their brains and the total size of the brain is smaller. White matter affects how the brain learns and functions. •There are fewer connections of one brain cell to another resulting in slowing thinking •Early use is strongly associated with schizophrenia and other psychotic and anxiety disorders. It is very difficult to prove that marijuana causes the disorder or just used as self-treatment. •Heavy and/or prolonged use leads to lower IQ’s and serious memory disorders. There are no controlled studies of the effects of marijuana on children or teens, but studies show that early use is very different from use after age eighteen years in its long-term effects. Smoking marijuana leads to poor driving. Teens drive poorly even when not intoxicated. Marijuana stays in the urine for up to three weeks. If your teen has an accident (very common) and has marijuana in the urine, he or she may be
convicted of driving while intoxicated whether they were intoxicated or not. How long does tetrahydrocannibol stay in your body and for how long can it be detect ed after you use marijuana? The amount of time depends on several factors such as how much a person has smoked, how long a person has smoked for, and the method used to detect Tetrahydrocannibol or its metabolites. Marijuana can be detected in urine, blood and saliva using methods called thin layer chromatography, high pressure liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, enzyme immunoassay and radioimmunoassay. The most psychoactive ingredient in marijuana is delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol. This is broken down into several other compounds that are also psychoactive. The half-life of Tetrahydrocannibol is about 24 hours. However, the metabolites of Tetrahydrocannibol can be detected for 45 to 60 days after the last use. Approximately half of the Tetrahydrocannabinol is excreted over several days, and the remainder by the end of about a week. However, some metabolites of the Tetrahydrocannibol , a number of which may still be active in the system, can be detected in the body at least thirty days following ingestion of a single dose and, following chronic use, in the urine for several weeks.

Finally, sanity has reigned supreme as the foolish idea of double-points for the final race of the season has been scrapped. Hats off to levelheaded Senatla TALK about fairytale endings – they don’t get much tenser than this: a game that at one stage it seemed the All Blacks might just steal from under the nose of Kyle Brown’s Blitzbokke. True, in the end it was a fairly comfortable 26-17 victory for Brown’s team, but for long periods it looked as though it could go either way – specially when the All Blacks were first to score in the opening minutes of this 10-minutes a side World Sevens Series final last Sunday at our handsome Nelson Mandela Bay stadium. Against Australia the South Africans had appeared most unsettled as they fell behind 0-10 with less than half the allotted seven-minute-aside playing time having expired. Indeed, for some time it looked as though the Blitzbokke’s goose was well and truly cooked. But full credit to Brown’s team: they learnt a lot from that game and were a far more settled unit in the all-important final. The performance not only gave them their second successive win over the All Blacks in the Series, but also gained them automatic entry to the 2016 Olympic Games. If over the two days of the PE tournament,

there’d been a Man of the Series award, who would you have voted for? There’s little doubt many would have seriously considered the fleet-footed Seabelo Senatla, by far the country’s speediest wing at top level. He’s elusive, too, and it surely can’t be long before this Welkom-born lad takes the next logical step... to Springbok squad level. He’s without doubt the speediest player on two legs in our rugby at the moment. So much so it’s quite possible – in fact, desirable – that he should soon be made such an offer. Looking ahead to next year the Springboks have announced that their home Rugby Championship match against the All Blacks on July 25 will again be at Ellis Park, where this year they beat New Zealand 27-25 in a cliff-hanger that produced one of the best performances by the Springboks since Meyer took over as coach. No doubt the All Blacks management will have paid the choice of venue close attention. The Kiwis, you can be sure, are ready and waiting. They don’t care much for that sort of challenge to their pride. Mark the date. It could be an interesting affair!

Just in time from Summer they had their latest launch of the new year - the Splash, a hatchback to fit between their entry-level Alto minicar and Swift hatchback. Selling at between R124 900 and R149 900, the newcomer’s fresh, youthful styling and versatile layout, while combining fuel-efficiency with excellent performance, is expected to appeal to a wide range of buyers.

Its digital info display is easy to read and indicates range, average fuel consumption and instant fuel consumption. The Splash offers a variety of storage options. Front door binnacles with integrated bottle holders, front and rear cup holders, and seatback pockets are standard. In the case of the GL models, a separate rev counter adds a sporty element. I liked the high-mounted gear shift lever which is within easy reach. A three-spoke steering wheel is standard, and the GL version is equipped with steering wheel-mounted audio system controls.

Spar River Mile entries open ENTRIES for the 91st SPAR River Mile are open ahead of the event on February 14 and 15, 2015. South Africa’s oldest open water swimming event is just one of many events which form part of the 2015 Festival which will see top SA singer Heinz Winckler performing on the Saturday (Valentine’s day) and world-renowned mentalist Larry Soffer taking to the stage on the Sunday. A packed weekend of activities will start with the Wimpy 5km family fun run and be followed by a brand new event to the Eastern Cape, the triathlon super sprint team relay event which is open to mixed teams of three people where each team member completes a 250 swim, 6km MTB and a 1.6km run in relay fashion. The event, sanctioned by Eastern Province Triathlon, is a great inclusion into this family weekend and a great opportunity to get involved in multi discipline events. The Saturday afternoon hosts the family
half-mile swim, the disabled mile swim and the Speedo double Mile wetsuit swim before Heinz Winckler takes to the stage. Sunday’s programme starts off at 11am with the Wakaberry Kids across the river races for children 12 years and under who aren’t doing the Mile race. Not to be missed is the celebrity swim-off between some of our EP Kings rugby stars at 1pm. The SPAR ladies’ mile takes place at 1.15pm followed by the men’s mile at 2:15pm before one of the world’s top magicians and mentalists, Larry Soffer, hosts the prize giving ceremony for the 91st River Mile. Early bird discounted entries are available until the end of December with all the Mile and double Mile entrants who register before January 1 receiving a complimentary River Mile t-shirt.
