Metro committed to fasttracking ore dump move THANDI SETOKOE NELSON Mandela Bay Executive Mayor, Athol Trollip has assured that the metro is committed to working with Transnet to accelerate the relocation of bulk fuel storage and ore export facilities at the Port Elizabeth Harbour to the specially designed Port of Ngqura as soon as possible. Trollip was speaking at a site visit at the Transnet manganese ore export site last week. This, after recent public concern over manganese dust air pollution from Transnet’s two manganese ore facilities which is said to be damaging residents’ property while also posing a serious health threat. Responding to the outcry, Trollip said while it is physically impossible to handle this amount of mined product without dust, they are going to co-operate with Transnet to see what can be done to facilitate the move as speedily as possible to a facility that is better suited. “No one would expect this amount of mined material to be dust-free which is one of the reasons why we have got to take every precaution to mitigate the dust because it has health concerns. “I, too, would like to see the ore dump gone sooner than the scheduled move in 2023 but obviously that is impractical,” Trollip said.

‘I, too, would like to see the ore dump gone sooner than the scheduled move in 2023 but obviously that is impractical.’ - NMB EXECUTIVE MAYOR, ATHOL TROLLIP As much as they wanted the manganese to be exported out of the Nelson Mandela Bay port, they believed that the lifespan of the current facilities had expired, he said. Port manager Rajesh Dana said, “We do not dispute the fact that the manganese operation in the Port of Port Elizabeth creates an inconvenience to port tenants and residents. However, as a responsible corporate citizen we have superior operational and compliance controls in place to mitigate these negative impacts.” Dana said independent scientific data confirmed that the current operations did not pose any medical harm to the health of employees and residents. “Transnet will continue to employ innovative technologies, seeking guidance from the International Manganese Institute to ensure that our operations remain safe and ef-

He outlined the Port’s five-point plan which includes: ) The review of controls with particular emphasis on dust suppression systems. ) The continued analysis and collation of data relating to air emissions and environmental impacts, with appropriate remediation action. ) The establishment of a hotline to register any public concerns around manganese, which Transnet will use to improve its operations. transparently. Eastern Cape general manager of Transnet Port Terminals Siya Mhlaluka said Nelson Mandela Bay remained the primary corridor in this country to export manganese. “The Port of Ngura is what we are going to use to do that. We have noted the concerns around the timelines and we are working tirelessly within Transnet to ensure that we push those timelines forward,” Mhlaluka said. He said they already started some minor operations of manganese at the Port of Ngura following a high demand of manganese. “We want to test our readiness so that by the time we have a fully-fledged operation in Nqura, we will be more than ready,” Mhlaluka added.

Rumours about green ID books refuted REPORTER RUMOURS that the green barcoded ID book will be discontinued have surfaced again, prompting the Department of Home Affairs to refute the claims once more. During their first briefing of 2018 on January 10, Home Affairs director general Mkuseli Apleni expressed his concern over the continuous claims that the lifespan of the green ID book would be terminated on March 31 this year and the effect it has had on South Africans. In a state of panic, a large number of people have swarmed to Home Affairs offices to apply for smart ID cards. The false claims first started circulating late last year and are making the rounds yet again on social media. “At the time, we had responded swiftly to say such reports are false and do not come from us. We are again confronted with the same incorrect reports from the beginning of January, circulating largely on social media,” Apleni said. “We, therefore, call upon members of the public to ignore these mischievous messages. Responding with panic affects our systems negatively, thus, making it very difficult for us to deliver services as expected: professionally and in the most humane of ways.” According to Apleni, their offices refuse to turn anyone away and are, therefore, left battling with long queues and frustrated people. “This is a situation to which we do not want to subject citizens and officials. It is in our interest that citizens should apply for and receive their secured smart ID cards; it is in their interest and in that of the country. But this has to be done systematically.” When the department rolled out the smart ID cards in 2013, their data showed that 38 million people were in possession of the green barcoded ID books and they then set out a strategy for a smooth roll-out. “We knew that one workstation can handle 28 card applications per day. It takes 17 minutes on average to finalise capturing an

application. We were, therefore, able to estimate how many cards we could produce at a given time with the number of automated offices we had that were equipped with live capture. As a result, when we started, we had invited first-time applicants and senior citizens to be the first to apply for smart ID cards, free of charge,” Apleni explained. Over time, with more offices and automated systems, and reinforced by 14 bank branches on eHomeAffairs, they extended the coverage to other areas. “Of our 411 offices, 184 are currently equipped with live capture, which can process applications for smart ID cards and passports,” he said. “Discussions with participating banks are continuing to increase capacity through additional bank branches. “Participating banks are Absa, FNB, Nedbank and Standard Bank.” The department has encouraged those with access to the internet to apply for their smart ID cards and passports online, using the eHomeAffairs portal at www.dha.gov.za. “We really cannot afford disruptions arising from false messages on termination dates. We are working on getting our systems fully automated and are also developing a mobile solution to support the roll-out of smart ID cards. “Between 2013 and 2017, we were able to reach the seven million milestone on smart cards issued. While we have 38 million people to cover, it should be clear these messages making the rounds, that March 2018 is the cut-off date, are devoid of truth and should, therefore, be ignored.” Beware of scams In addition to addressing the claims about the termination of the green barcoded ID book, Apleni also took the opportunity during the briefing to warn residents to be vigilant about scams. “We have noticed a spike in the number of incidents in which people use fake accounts to steal money from others. We urge people to be vigilant; they should not allow themselves to be conned, whether for tenders, IDs or other documents.”

Solutions sought to curb long queues at traffic departments REPORTER THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) is currently seeking a number of solutions to curtail the long queues at the Korsten and Uitenhage traffic and driver’s licensing centres that resulted in a wave of frustration by the public, said the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Safety and Security, Councillor John Best. “Our continuous efforts to get the Road Traffic Management Corporation, ultimately responsible for driver’s licence centres, to address broken machines at the traffic and licensing centres presented us with an unintended consequence,” he added. Best said they converted from the outdated live capturing units, which had reached the end of their shelf lives and caused numerous problems, and became the first metropolitan municipality in the country to be upgraded to the new live enrolment machines. “When the other metropolitan municipalities also underwent the same conversion, more machines were added to the network, making the system much slower. “While a normal transaction would initially take five minutes, it can now take up to 20 minutes to register. I cannot express how sorry I am for members of the public who must wait in long queues before they can be helped. “We were informed by the Department of Transport that network problems persist between Korsten and the national office in Pretoria.” “We negotiated with the national department once again. We engaged with Telkom as the network provider

Member of the Mayoral Committee for Safety and Security, Councillor John Best. PHOTO:SUPPLIED and our IT department to find a faster network connection to address the tardiness of the current system.” Best said this would ensure that the system is faster which will enable them to assist more clients. “Other critical solutions include the establishment of a B-class traffic and licensing centre at the Motherwell Thusong Service Centre, which will provide all the services except for processing motorcycle licences. “We envisaged this centre with eight new live enrolment machines to be operational by the end of February. Staff members are already trained to man the facility. “As soon as the Motherwell Thus-

ong Service Centre is accredited by the national Department of Transport, residents will be able to get services closer to them and mitigate the demand at the centres in Uitenhage and Korsten,” he continued. According to Best, the Department has already visited the Motherwell centre three times and advised officials as to what must be done to become compliant. “The Director of Traffic and Licensing, Warren Prins, in collaboration with the Executive Director of Safety and Security, Advocate Keith Meyer, are looking at two additional points where only the renewal of driver’s licenses will be done. “This would mean that we will have a traffic and licensing centre in Korsten, another in Uitenhage and one in Motherwell by May this year and the two additional points for the renewals that will come online towards the end of the year.” No other transactions except the renewal of existing driver’s licenses will be done at those two points, which means residents will be able to walk up to a live enrolment unit and update their licenses. “We are also investigating the possible implementation of an online booking system which is currently used by other metropolitan municipalities with great success. “This will enable members of the public to make a booking as at any other professional business. “This will eliminate situations where more people than the centre can accommodate or service pitch up at the traffic and drivers licensing centres. “Nobody else besides those who have booked will then be assisted,” Best concluded.

SASSA warns against fake message REPORTER ACCORDING to a media statement issued by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), the recent information currently circulating on social media stating that SASSA is providing uniforms and stationery to school going children who receive the child support grant is untrue. SASSA has urged beneficiaries of social grants to ignore the messages. “SASSA does not supply stationery to school going children as it is not within the SASSA mandate. “School uniforms are provided as part of the Social Relief of Distress programme. “However, this programme is implemented in terms of the Social Assistance Act of 2004, and all prospective beneficia-

‘Hierdie plaasjapie wil skelms vasvat’ CARALEE DORFLING DIE bendes en hul dwelms se dae in Port Elizabeth is getel, sê genl.maj.

“On-

M’well family loses everything in house fire No words can describe how I felt when I arrived home only to see it burnt to ashes. - DON NYUMKA

THANDI SETOKOE A MOTHERWELL family is now without a home and is trying to rebuild their lives after losing everything in a fire allegedly caused by children playing at a next-door neighbour’s yard last week. Neighbour Khayalethu Gxidi was told that three children aged five, six and nine were playing with matches outside when the fire got out of hand, setting his shack alight. Gxidi said by the time the residents noticed the fire, it had already spread to the next-door neighbour’s shack. “I was in away in East London when I heard the horrific news. When I arrived and saw the damage my heart just sank,” Gxidi described. Don Nyumka, who lives behind Gxidi, not only lost his shack in the fire but his house and car as well. The despaired husband and father of two said he is still in disbelief. “ “No words can describe how I felt when I arrived home only to see it burnt to ashes. It was shocking to see there was nothing left of our house. Luckily my wife, who was asleep inside the house at the time of the fire, managed to get out in time,” Nyumka said. He added that he isn’t even angry at the kids for having caused such damage, as he

too is a father and, therefore, understands that sometimes children do things that are uncalled for. “What’s done is done now. I don’t even expect the neighbours to pay for anything. I am sure that the children have seen the danger of playing with fire,” he said. Another next-door neighbour, Nomathemba Ncaba, whose house survived the fire with minimal damage, said the house was engulfed in flames by the time the firefighters got there. “People came with buckets of water from everywhere trying to douse the flames, but the flames were just too huge and the entire house was burning. We only managed to take out the couches and television from the lounge before the roof caved in,” Ncaba said. Ward 55 councillor Mzuvukile Boti said they were going to do their utmost best to assist the family in any way possible. “A temporary house is being constructed and we are also going to try and assist the children with back-to-school essentials,” Boti said.

Don Nyumka’s house and car were destroyed in the blaze.

Vistarus curbs costs with solar power REPORTER PROVIDING 450 people with electricity every day has left the Vistarus Mission Station faced with an annual utilities account of just under R1 million. Vistarus Mission Station in Sydenham, which was founded in 1998 by Kobus and Lynette Jacobs, provides shelter to homeless and needy families, restoring their dignity by empowering them with life skills and creating job opportunities for them.

The centre also incorporates a recycling programme, a plastic extrusion plant and a woodwork centre. The astronomical amount of the cost of electricity used by the centre impacts this nonprofit organisation’s operational costs severely. “Consider the energy cost of cooking meals, taking showers and of electricity for up to 450 people at any one time, every day. We, therefore, made a decision to go forward in faith and install a 322-panel solar energy system to capture the sun’s energy and convert it to pro-

vide electricity and to heat water for people accommodated and provided for at the centre. “This is the first of two phases that will enable Vistarus to be totally energy efficient in the future,” explained Kobus Jacobs. “My wife, Lynette, and I made a conscious decision to enhance our ‘going green’ project by partnering with local experts Tim Whittaker, Rubicon and Kwikelec to ensure less money is spent on energy and the financial focus can once again be on programme delivery to the people at the centre where the restoration of broken minds, bodies and souls take place.”

Jacobs added that solar panels for the second phase can be sponsored at R2 500 per panel. “We are appealing to the public to assist us. Donations above R100 are tax deductible with the provision of a SARS Section 18(A) tax certificate. Donors will be making a lasting difference to the lives of persons who have fallen on hard times.” For more information contact Nadia Jacobs at Vistarus on 041 484 1106 or go to www.vistarus.co.za or on facebook – Vistarus Mission Station.

Students raise R55 000 Boardwalk brings smiles to in charity project children’s hospital wards REPORTER THE IIE’s Varsity College Port Elizabeth VC Cares committee and students, under the guidance of campus student relations manager Jaci Howell, collaborated last year to raise awareness and funds for their Qhubeka Education Project, resulting in a grand total of R55 000. The Qhubeka Education Project was IIE’s Varsity College Corporate Social Initiative (CSI) last year. The initiative distributes bicycles to students, teachers and school volunteers to improve access to education, reduce travel time and improve educational outcomes. The funds raised will be used to purchase 18 bicycles. “I am tremendously proud of our students for their dedication and commitment in helping to make an impact so willingly last year. “Achieving our target would not have been possible without their time and effort that was put into helping out with the various fundraising initiatives,” Howell said. “Their level of voluntarily service, commitment and dedication was truly phenomenal.

To see first-hand the kind of passion our students have for making a difference in the community is amazing.” Some of the contributing fundraising initiatives included the Mr and Miss Varsity College, a raffle, bingo evening and family fun fair. The IIE’s higher certificate in event management (HCEM) and the diploma in public relations (DPR) students collaborated and hosted the family fun fair as part of their work integrated learning (WIL) modules. WIL provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate their learning in an actual and/ or stimulated workplace environment. Sponsors who contributed to the project throughout the year included Heinz In Style, Elegant Ivy, Woolworths, the Port Elizabeth Opera House, Madiba Bay Events, the Old Grey Sports Club, Above and Beyond, Whiskey and Honey, Hairpower, Divas Hair Salon, Total Concept, Sophisticate Models, Jenni Gault International Jewellery Design, AVX Consulting Engineers, Algoa FM and the SB Agency. “The year has been a fulfilling adventure which needed the support and commitment of many people in order to be a success and The IIE’s Varsity College Port Elizabeth campus would like to thank one and all for their support throughout the year.”

Morris wins regional finals of architectural student awards REPORTER LOCAL student Matthew Morris recently won the Nelson Mandela University regional finals of the Corobrik Architectural Student of the Year competition. In this annual competition, the country’s best architectural students from eight major universities are identified based on their final thesis and presented with awards throughout the year. The winners of each of the regional competitions then go on to compete for the national title and a prize of R50 000 at the Corobrik Architectural Student of the Year Awards which will be held in Johannesburg in May. Morris’s winning entry was entitled The Design of a Decentralised Sewage Treatment Facility for a Settlement Within Bethelsdorp, Port Elizabeth. The project concerns itself with the heavily polluted river valley system of Swartkops, where the edges are settled by people and a lack of adequate service infrastructure has led to high levels of pollution. This unbalanced relationship between the urban and natural environments has resulted in the severe destruction of critical biodiversity zones and endangered

keystone species and subsequently impacting the quality of life for the residents of the area. The absence of formal public buildings and spaces within the community are a result of a structure supporting a minimum standard of living. With this, the potential to address both the ecological problem as well as improving the living environments was seen through designing infrastructure with an explicit architectural intent. The design works towards addressing settlement edge and its connection to the natural valley system while building on the underutilised congregational points within the community. In so doing, it provides infrastructure for processing the pollution while concentrating and providing an appropriate place for community activities, making good people places and healthier and happier environments. Speaking at the Port Elizabeth regional awards ceremony for the 31st Corobrik Architectural Student of the Year Award, Corobrik area sales manager Mike Willard said that winners, such as Morris from the Nelson Mandela University (NMU), would shape the future in a world that was already transforming. “In South Africa, the architects

of tomorrow will be tasked with taking an already challenging past into a mind-boggling future that many of us have not yet even begun to understand. “They will be the pathfinders who map out a built environment that uses the sophisticated technologies of the future to address the challenges of today that have been compounded by the shortcomings of the past,” he said. Willard added that Corobrik was extremely proud to recognise works of excellence that would be the mainstays of the architectural map of the future. Morris received a cheque for R8 500, while Rust van der Merwe, Chelcie Akom and Simone Joubert shared the runners-up places. A R4 500 prize for the best use of clay masonry was also presented to Ian Woolard. Morris will represent NMU at the finals to be held in May.

St Dominic’s matrics achieve perfect pass rate

Nizamiye Al Azhar Institute shines brightly

Congratulations were in order when St Dominic’s Priory School proudly revealed that their 2017 matric learners had achieved a 100% pass rate. Proudly displaying their certificates are, from left, Bumnandi Jali, Irshaad Hoosain, Mnombo Mqhayi, Candy Fang, Jonél Roos, Danielle Wait and Taylia Perrin. PHOTO:SUPPLIED

Nizamiye Al Azhar Institute is one of the five schools that achieved 100% pass rate in the Port Elizabeth district. Pictured here are some of the proud learners and educators.

With four distinctions, top achieving athlete on her way to becoming a doctor REPORTER A NELSON Mandela Bay girl’s life has been transformed through the power of sport. Bronwyn White (18), one of United Through Sport’s (UTS) Senior School of Excellence’s (SSE) beneficiaries, achieved her 2017 National Senior Certificate with a bachelor’s pass and four distinctions through Pearson

High School. She is their top-achieving beneficiary and has been accepted to study medicine at the University of Cape Town this year. “United Through Sport gave me such an amazing opportunity, allowing me to attend a school such as Pearson. “I feel like I have grown much more and have been exposed to many more opportuni-

ties and people thanks to UTS. “The fact that they also saw me as a deserving candidate for the bursary inspired confidence in me that I never previously had,” said an elated White. White is one of only nine beneficiaries from the United Through Sport Senior School of Excellence Programme who achieved their 2017 National Senior Certificates. The programme, which is based in Nelson Mandela Bay, is focussed on providing talented and determined children with a top- level academic education for a full five years with the final aim of further supporting them through tertiary studies. Participating schools include Pearson High School, Alexander Road High School and Muir College. The class of 2017 is the biggest group of graduates that have passed through the SSE Programme, according to UTS Director Nick Mould. “Each one of our Grade 12s is expected to pursue tertiary studies, many being the first in their families to do so. “Compared to the national average, we are very pleased with our 100% pass rate and would like to wish all

our beneficiaries well with their future endeavours,” said Mould. The programme’s 100% pass rate is well above the 65% provincial and 75.1% national average pass rates. The UTS SSE Programme achieved a 78% university pass rate, compared to the national average of just 28%. Kaylin Fourie (18), another beneficiary who passed with a bachelor’s pass, will be pursuing her dream of becoming a teacher by studying B.Ed. through the University of Pretoria. “United Through Sport has been there for me since I was 11 years old and they have been the main reason I have achieved my dream of being the first person in my family to go to university. “This opportunity has really changed my life,” Fourie said.

PROF SHAMAN QURAN Prof Shaman Quran se geestelike genesing kragte “as ek nie vir u kan help met u probleme nie is daar niemand anders what kan help nie” Vir Vroulike voodoo of tradisionele geneesheer bel so gou as moonlik. My naam is Sara, ek is 60 jaar oud, ek is van Springbok. Ek kon nie glo toe prof Shaman vir my al my vyande op sy kragtebybel wys nie. Ek kon sien hoe hulle my drome afkraak en al hulle vuilgoed wat hulle aan my gedoen het. Hulle het my lewe hel gemaak. Al my finansiële sake is afgehandel.

Volcano Ladies start preparations for 2018 season SELBY MADIKANE MOTHERWELL side Volcano Ladies FC have started with their early training in preparation for the Safa Nelson Mandela Bay Women’s Regional League 2018 season. According to chairperson and head coach Mzuvukile Richard Khesi, the aim of preparing their side so early is to make sure that they win the promotional play-offs. Volcano will be playing in the Safa NMB Women’s Regional League Stream B. Khesi said that his players know that they have to deliver this season. ”There were lots of challenges last season. The major challenge was that the club did not have transportation for the players when they played away games. Despite being unemployed, I am undeterred from realising the goals of the club. I had to dig deep into my pocket and Sindi Mkhize rendered more assistance to the club,” he added. “There were times that I wanted to throw in the towel, but Mkhize gave me moral support. The club used temporary players’ cards because we did

not have the funds to pay for the season cards.” Khesi commended his players for heeding the club’s call. “Our players have come in large numbers to practices since early new year. They are serious because they know their mandate. “Last season was aimed at exposing the club to the top flight league. “We are so fortunate because the government provided the community of Motherwell NU 9 with outdoor gym facilities that the club makes use of. “I would like to praise my players for their outstanding performance during the past regional league season. “The club finished fourth on the league table after winning five games, losing two and drawing two. “I also want to thank the local doctor who paid an affiliation fee for the club. This year we are joined by Luzuko Ngqosha as assistant coach,” said Khesi. He said that the Ward 57 councillor said he would do his best to assist Volcano, following discussions last year. Anyone willing to assist the club can contact Mzuvukile Richard Khesi on 078 087 7173.

Chiefs beat the odds against Pioneers SELBY MADIKANE A GUTSY performance by Major Chiefs saw them defeat the tough Despatch Pioneers 4-3 after they were behind by one goal during their Safa Nelson Mandela Bay SAB Regional League clash which took place at Zwide Stadium on Saturday. Chiefs took the game to the visiting team from the word go. A long pass that was delivered by Zuko Mafayi went straight to Simamkele Pefile who unleashed a thunderous shot into the back of the net. Pioneers replied quickly with a penalty that was taken by Mzoxolo Mabulu. The visitors increased their lead to 2-1 after Mabulu was fouled in

the box. Mabulu was declared the hero of the day as he registered the second goal from the penalty mark. Chiefs were awarded a penalty that Mafayi scored to make the score 2 -2 until the end of the first half. In the second half, Chiefs looked more threatening on the counter-attack, but their front men wasted many clear-cut chances in front of the goals. Pefile’s solo effort led Olwethu Hanabe to score Chiefs’ third goal. The hosts’ joy was quickly cancelled after Luvuyo Tshawe Gewu came up with an equaliser. Gewu’s goal seemed to have revitalised Pioneers but Mabulu’s next shot went over the goals. Pefile was rewarded with a spec-

tacular goal that helped Major Chiefs win the game 4-3. The game between PE Sundowns and FC Winners did not take place because FC Winners did not have players’ cards. SWARTKOPS Valley United Brothers (SUBS) played to a goalless draw when they took on their neighbours, Lion City, in an ABC Motsepe League Motherwell derby at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium on Friday. More than 300 spectators, who

thought that the game was going to produce fireworks, saw the two sides fail to live up to their expectations. Apparently the high temperature badly affected the tempo of the game. Luxolo Tobi could have scored Lion City’s opening goal, but unfortunately his shot went wide. Masixole Freedom Funani also could have scored, but his efforts was dealt with by SUBS goalkeeper Sivuyile Foffy Dumse. In return, SUBS skipper Bathandwa Zondani was denied a goal by City’s goalkeeper, Phumlani Koboka, who collected the midfielder’s closerange powerful header. The battle was fought entirely in the middle field. At times in the second half,

SUBS came up strongly, but Phumelele Msila and Lizo Norushu seemed to have done their homework as the last line of defence. SUBS again could have been rewarded with a goal, but Unathi Khuzwayo’s shot was easily saved by goalkeeper Koboka. City striker Ludwe Sonjica delivered a shot after the wing, Zukisani Benni Ngalo, laid a good pass to the striker. In the last quarter of the game, SUBS tried very hard to turn the game around, launching attack after attack, but the game eventually ended in a goalless draw.

Nissan launches new Patrol for sophisticated buyers < The Patrol has a combination of style, luxury, technology and performance. PHOTO:SUPPLIED

Auto Traders 752 Govan Mbeki Avenue, North End, PE - Tel 041 487 1225

DEAN 082 77 20 789

REPORTER FOLLOWING its international success, Nissan is confident the new Patrol will find a place in South Africans’ hearts as the new model embraces comfort, extravagance and smart technology without losing its off-road proficiency. “We are extremely proud of the new Nissan Patrol because it shows off just how advanced Nissan is when it comes to Intelligent Mobility,” said Xavier Gobille, Nissan Group of Africa managing director of marketing and sales.. It’s for the sophisticated buyer who requires an SUV that’s big on features, big on opulence, big on style and big on exclusivity. “This executive SUV has an amazing array of technology that keeps you safe and in premium comfort while re-energising your passion for driving,” said Gobille. Nissan Intelligent Mobility This SUV is the epitome of Nissan’s most advanced technology – Nissan Intelligent Mobility with features that include: . Intelligent blind spot intervention . Intelligent cruise control, which works like standard cruise control with the added feature of maintaining a selected distance from the vehicle in front of you. . Intelligent distance control in relation to the vehicle ahead. . Intelligent driver awareness that analyses the driver’s steering behaviour to provide an alert if signs of drowsiness, or inattention are detected. . Intelligent emergency braking . Intelligent forward collision warning. If the system detects potential risks, it alerts the driver to slow down with visual and audible alerts, and will also tighten the seat belt. . Intelligent lane intervention. Using a camera installed in the windshield; this system detects lane markers to calculate its position and if you drift out of your lane; it will alert the driver and can apply brake force to the appropriate wheels to help guide you back into your lane. . Intelligent ride control, which controls the engine and brakes to deliver a smoother driving experience over small and large bumps. . Intelligent trace control. When negotiating a corner, this system applies braking automatically to each wheel. . Intelligent lane departure warning. . Intelligent smart rear-view mirror. This system uses a built-in LCD monitor to display images from a camera mounted at the rear of the vehicle to negate the inherent limitations of a standard rear-view mirror. . Around view monitor. Five cameras positioned around the vehicle provides a 360-degree view of your surroundings. Stylish from every angle Designed for full-sized family adventures, the Nissan Patrol maintains its seven-passenger utility and has an impressive array of high-tech standard features. The exterior appearance is both powerful and refined, and the redesigned body features an aggressive stance with a bold V-motion front grille and Xenon headlights. The front includes functional air intake vents and the electronic tailgate includes an auto-close feature. The plush interior offers limousine-like space in the second and third row of seats with class-leading knee-room. Among the list of standard features are cli-

mate-controlled front seats, heated steering wheel, premium leather seating and a dualzone automatic temperature control system, including second row “curtain” vents to effectively distribute cool air to every seat. The standard seating configuration includes front eight-way power-adjustable bucket seats with a large centre console, second row fold flat 60/40 split bench seat and third row 60/40-split folding bench seat, which folds flat into the floor for extra cargo carrying flexibility. The exclusive Bose audio system features AM/FM/MP3/CD with 13 speakers, a subwoofer and digital amplifier to provide rich acoustics. The Patrol comes standard with the 3D Nissan navigation system and a multi-screen DVD entertainment system with screens fitted into the headrests of both front seats. The centre console has a 12-volt power outlet and the Patrol has nine cupholders, four bottle holders, a sunroof, power door locks with illuminated switches and an anti-lockout system with auto door lock speed-sensing function, Nissan intelligent key with push button start and Bluetooth hands-free phone system. Technical prowess The Patrol is powered by a robust, high-tech 5.6-litre V8 petrol engine that develops 298kW of power and 560Nm of torque. This is mated to a seven-speed automatic gearbox that uses variable valve technology. The Patrol has a towing capacity of 3.5 tons and a 140-litre fuel tank. The new direct injection gas system provides better throttle performance, improved fuel economy and advanced emissions performance by reducing engine knock, improving combustion stability and offering precise injection control. The seven-speed automatic transmission with adaptive shift control and downshift rev matching features a new design that helps enhance fuel efficiency through use of its wider gear ratios and automatic transmission fluid warmer. The All-Mode four-wheel drive system features Auto/4H/4LO modes and an electronically controlled part-time transfer case. Under normal driving conditions, the system operates in two-wheel drive mode, but it can distribute torque to all four wheels when road conditions warrant it (up to 50 percent of

torque can go to the front wheels on demand). Responsive braking is provided by a fourwheel disc brake system with anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brake force distribution (EBD) and brake assist. Also standard is ABLS and a Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system. The Patrol’s formidable independent double-wishbone front and rear suspension provides smooth ride comfort and responsive handling for both on-road and off-road driving. Ensconced in safety In addition to cutting-edge Nissan Intelligent Mobility features, the Patrol’s safety features include Nissan’s advanced air bag system (AABS) with dual-stage front supplemental air bags with seat belt sensors and front occupant classification sensor. It also includes roof-mounted curtain supplemental air bags , front seat-mounted sideimpact supplemental air bags, and front seat active head restraints. Standard are three-point front seat belts with dual pretensioners and load limiters, three-point seat belts for all rear seat occupants, including in the centre position, ISOfix child seat anchor system, child safety rear door locks, and Zone Body construction with front and rear crumple zones. A tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is also included with a warning lamp in the gauge cluster or a warning display in the navigation system. Pricing There is only one model on offer – the Patrol Premium – which comes jam-packed with a host of creature comforts in either a tan, or black interior and seven exterior colours. Optional extras such as a tow bar are available. The new Nissan Patrol Premium costs R1 299 000. The new Patrol is backed up by Nissan Assured and has a standard sixyear/ 150 000km warranty, as well ICQC 2018-20 as a comprehensive threeyear/90 000km service plan.
